/tg/ - Traditional Games

You are Logan Drey, the Unchosen Void Knight.

You used to be a normal guy, with normal hopes and normal dreams. You were going to be an augment surgeon/mechanic, and you were already most of the way to that goal.

And then 4 years ago, the AI turned everyone against you. All at once half of everyone you ever knew was turned into automatons, and in the weeks that followed that number only increased.

For 4 years you fought the AI, hoping to liberate the human race from its tyranny. You failed. And on the brink of being taken yourself, you met a dying knight from another world. After taking up their duty: to protect the universe itself, you were saved; flung across the stars to places you never thought could exist.

You’ve been all over the universe, befriending the strange aliens and fighting the growing corruption.

But now you’ve come home, to finish what you’ve started.

The gatling guns mounted on the oversized metal suit pepper the ground with heavy fire, hitting just about everything but their intended target. The energy shots go wide or ricochet off or your armor and shield.

Running as fast as your legs will let you, you circle the huge machine, firing as you go. You have Vicky scan it for weak spots as you test its armor with your shots, all the while the gears turn in your head as you try to work out a good way to get in close.

“You cannot hope to defeat this machine, Logan Drey. It was designed and built to eliminate the last obstacle to humanity’s future.” The machine’s loudspeaker blares.

Ducking behind cover, you shout back. “Is that so?”

<Vicky, I need something.
>Information on this machine is not readily available, scanning will take time.

You hear the heavy footfalls of the Metal suit approaching your cover spot. “Yes.” It says.

You aren’t in the best position right now; there must be some way to get an edge on this thing…

>I’m reading a fairly large energy charge coming from the metal suit.

Charging up? Well then…
You put your hand on the KV’s charge port.

<Load Charge Shot, two can play this game.

“Designed to destroy humanity’s last enemy? Tell me then…” You shout from behind cover.

>I would move if I were you.

You jump to the side, powering your leap with the jets on your feet. Rolling as you reach the ground, you come up into a crouch and home your weapon on what appears to be the suit’s head.

“Where’s the self-destruct button?” You say with a wicked smile as you release your shot.

The AI’s suit quickly raises its shield to deflect your shot, but instead of deflecting the shot it buckles and cracks. After a few seconds, your shot runs out of juice and fizzles out. It never hit its intended target, but it wrecked the shield that got in its way.

“Not possible.” The AI says flatly. “I have gone through every possible upgrade you could have applied to that weapon; none of them would be capable of this. Where could you possibly have gone to obtain such powerful weaponry?”

It sounds… confused? Of course it would be. Good, let it stew in that.

>Interesting. If it has calculated all possible upgrades to the KV-09, that information would be sitting around on the net. I could connect to it and apply such upgrade as needed, if you’d like.

<Think you could do it without letting the AI in?
>I understand your fears, Logan. But I do not believe that the AI could even access this vessel. The internal structure is far too different for its systems to comprehend. In all honesty, you could get a CBSC implant forced into your head and it probably wouldn’t work.
>Alright, do it. Let me know what you come up with.

“Not going to answer?” The AI says over its loudspeaker.

You laugh. “Oh, here and there. I’ve done some travelling.” You say, walking calmly towards the huge machine.

“Impossible. You never left Franklin City. I have had watchers on all possible exits.” It says.

You smile. “You assume that I left through the front door. Not your first mistake, but I’m gonna make damn sure it’s your last.” You say, breaking into a run. You move forward more quickly than the AI expects, and when you’re in range you swing your sword forward and slash.

“YOU CANNOT DEFEAT THIS MACHINE!” It says loudly. It sounds mad, can an AI get mad? In response to your proximity, the machine reveals a pair of large blades and moves to counter your attack.

The twin blades bear down on you and you bring up your own to guard. The three blades meet and you’re immediately forced downward. Your mechanical legs struggle to keep you standing, and your sword is slowly pushed back.

“This machine has more strength in one arm than you do in your whole body. This struggle is pointless, give in and save us both the trouble, Logan Drey.” The AI says.

Shit shit shit… You didn’t quite see this coming.

As you struggle against the huge blades bearing down on you from above, another pair of arms emerge from the torso. Each one holding a small cylinder, which both project a blade of light forward in the shape of a blade… Energy blades? Those weren’t a thing when you left…

That doesn’t change the fact that they’re right in front of you, and your sword is currently occupied..

<Load repulsor blast

“Like…” You squeeze the trigger and hear your blade hum as energy fills it with a strange, invisible glow.

“Fucking…” You angle your blade upward and point your left hand at one of the arms.

“HELL!” You blast one of the small arms off, stepping into its guard and thrusting upwards at the machine’s chest.

The machine backs off a step to avoid your strike, and immediately bears down on you with its blades again. You dodge one blade and knock the other one off course as you duck down and grab what you really wanted out of that exchange.

Picking up the energy blade emitter that was in the arm you blasted off, you prompt Vicky.

<Can I use this thing?
>Scanning…

As Vicky scans, you continue to dodge and parry the machine’s strikes. It hits like a hammer, but you meet it like an anvil, waiting for your chance to start striking back.

“This is not possible. Your blade should have broken 5 strikes ago. Even the most reinforced version of the KV-09 would have broken by now.” It says.

“The most reinforced version you know of.” You say, smacking away another one of his stabs.

As you duck under a swing aimed for your chest, the energy blade emitter in your left hand turns black and gold. Then, your left arm glows from within and your hand opens up, allowing the emitter to enter your left arm where your support tank is housed.

>Yes.
<Thank you.

“What was that? What did you just do? You should not have been capable of such actions.” The AI says.

“And yet, I am. Shows how much you know.” You say.

The AI screams then, rushing towards you with more force than before. It’s definitely mad.

I don't like the idea of giving the AI time to pore over its findings for too long. Depending on what sensors it has installed and how smart it is, it might figure out magic.

Maybe we should message our friends to get ready and end it.

It seems the AI has no knowledge of Aether, and magic seems to work alright (at least until we run out of juice), meaning that our allies should be fine, unless...

>Hecatun apparently don't need magic to live an function as far as we can tell, but what about dragons? Wouldn't they drop out of sky in absence of Aether, the stuff of life?
>>
>>33087724
From what we've seen, it seems to only grasp things the way humans do, using human knowledge of the universe... which is VERY off.
>>
>>33087819

Well at first I was worried that the AI rebellion itself might have been connected to the encroaching influence of Aether or one of its agents (what was the deal with Kema and their Forger anyway?). But now I suspect that it might be the case that AI is in fact some sort of transhumanist enterprise.

In either case, it will be completely unprepared for our little big friends.
>>
You meet its heavy blade with your own, letting it slide off into the path of its second blade. Effectively causing it to block its own swing. As it winds up its remaining smaller arm, you extend your left hand and hear a few clicks as your own energy sword comes out of your forearm and you grasp it. Energy pours out of either side of the emitter, and you quickly step in and strike off the smaller arm before it can hit you.

The machine thrusts down at your chest with both of its huge blades. You side step and parry them, following up by slashing into its right arm with your new blade.

Once it realises that it’s been hit, the machine backs off. “This should not be possible. You should not be capable of combat on this level. I should have killed you five times already. There is no possible place you could have gone where you could have received such power. There is no way you could have left Franklin. HOW ARE YOU STILL ALIVE?” The AI says.

“That’s your limit then.” You say, welcoming this moment to catch your breath. “No matter how many humans you assimilate, you will always be nothing more than a machine. I’ve seen things that you couldn’t even imagine, and I need my people. As they are meant to be, not as you’ve made them.”

“I’ve made them what they are meant to be! Under me, humanity is perfect. Free from strife, free from hunger and war. Free to seek perfection in all things.” It says.

“A glass cage is still a cage. They only think they’re free because you told them so. You forced them to be a part of you, and I intend to really free them.” You say.

“THEY ARE FREE. I HAVE MADE THEM PERFECT!” It shouts.

“No such thing as perfect.” You say.

“And that is your limit, Logan Alexander Drey. Your feeble half-mind is incapable of grasping perfection, so it scoffs at it. Humanity has chosen me as their savior, and I will guard them from you.” It says. You hear movement coming from its back. “Even if I have to annihilate this entire city.”

It suddenly starts to rise, carried by several rockets on its back. It crashes through the ceiling, causing the building to start coming down around you. You dash to the exit to escape the rubble, as a beam of light lances through the collapsing ceiling, crashing through the ground behind you and sending you flying out of the building.

Outside, you look up at the huge machine. It’s flying alright, and it has several large beam cannons that went unused earlier trained on your position.

You know the perfect way to throw him off your scent, though. You blade glows gold and you rift to another location within the city. Moving like this, there are few places in the city that you can’t go. But you can’t get up to the machine with this method.

Given a moment to plan while the AI searches for your new location, you prompt Vicky.

<Got anything for this Vicky?
>Possibly. I believe I have located an armor piece within the city.
<What could an armor piece do for me?

<I need to fly.
>I’ll mark the waypoint for you. Also, it appears as though we’ve been found.

Let the AI blast this place to bits, you’ll be long gone. The waypoint seems to be in a lab near the outskirts of the city. You’ve never been in there, but the front door should be fine. You open a rift and go in as the building you’re in is blasted to pieces.

In front of the lab, you can see the lights from the sky blowing the skyscraper you were hiding in to pieces. Turning your back to the destruction, you enter the lab.

<Why would an armor piece be here?
>It was found in the under city where Thitu died. They brought it here to study it, but it was left here when they abandoned the city.
<Why leave it?
>It appears as though it didn’t seem as important as combing the city for you. They figured they would be back before long.

It doesn’t really look like it was abandoned in a hurry, but looks can be deceiving. You move quickly through the lab towards the waypoint.

Sure enough, the armor piece is sitting on a pedestal, surrounded by all manner of tools. It looks like they’ve been experimenting on it.

>I would hurry this up, it appears as though we’ve been found again.

You pick up the piece and place it on your back, and you can see the glow reflected off the metal equipment around the room.

>Upgrades complete. Would you like to view your new specs?
<Forget that, what the hell is on my back.
>Initially it was going to be a simple jetpack. But I felt this was more appropriate. Extend them so you can get a better look.

Extend… what?

>They’re hooked into your nerves the same way your arm and legs are, you should be able to control them like limbs.

Thinking of them the way Vicky said, you stretch them. Feeling parts respond where there didn’t used to be parts. You extend the new piece on your back, and bring it forward to see it. “Wings?” You say out loud.

No, not wings. They’re set up almost like mechanical wings, but you can see jets within similar to the ones on your feet.

Once more, you rift away. Not far, just a few streets away from the lab.

In the sky you can see the metal suit raining destruction on the lab, believing that you’re inside.

Isn’t it in for a surprise?

You get a running start, feeling how light your once bulky legs are. Then you jump and extend your new wings, firing up the jets inside them along with the jets in your feet. Instead of hitting the ground like you’re used to, the jets take you upwards. It takes you a few seconds to get used to the handling, being much easier than you expected.

>I’ll handle the control of the wings. You just think about where you want to go or what you want to do.
<Thanks again.

Hovering several feet off the ground, you set your sights on the flying metal suit. You turn each jet to its maximum and fly at break neck speeds towards your target.

You fly as fast as your wings will let you, which is pretty damn fast. The wind on your face forces your right eye shut, but your left stays open and locks targets. You put a bead on his large weapons, as well as his arms and his jets. You prioritize the jets, as forcing him back to the ground would swing things heavily in your favour.

As you bring your weapon up and begin to fire, the machine finally notices your presence and quickly returns fire. You twist, duck and turn around its blasts. Its fire puts you off course, and you fly past it. Working with this you circle around to its backside and fire your jets, approaching its back faster than it can turn to face you.

“HOW?” It shouts as you plant your blade firmly into one of its jets. As you pull it out to attack another one, the machine turns and attempts to hit you with one of its blades. You block it with your shield, but it knocks you away.

You fully extend the wings and the jets flare, stopping you. “Magic.” You say flatly, powering forward blade-first. It blocks your strike but you vault over its guard and pull out your energy sword, twirling in the air and slashing into one of its energy weapons. It jabs upwards at you, but you flip out of the way and over its body, raking its back with both of your blades. In the process destroying 2 more of its jets.

The machine starts to lose altitude, the remaining jets unable to keep it up. Now’s your chance.

You rocket downwards in a high speed dive, hoping to take out the rest of the machine’s jets so it’ll hit the ground as hard as possible.

Then it turns. It turns and opens fire. You weren’t expecting that…

You flare your wings out and attempt to change your course to avoid getting turned to mash, and it almost works. You veer heavily to the right, but it isn’t enough. One of the larger beams engulfs your left shoulder. The armor of your shoulder can handle the heat, but the more fragile pieces within can’t. You can smell the oils and other liquids within your shoulder, as well as the smell of your plastic face melting.

You dodge the rest of the blasts, as well as the peppering of machine gun fire. But the AI manages to keep you at a safe distance so it can land.

Once it stops firing, you test your arm. Things still move within, but the shoulder itself remains motionless…

You glare down at where the machine landed. You aren’t about to let something like this stop you.

You bring your KV over to where your left hand hangs and place it against the charge port, and then you dive once more. This time you hold your shield in front of you, ready to activate it as soon as you see signs of fire.

And the fire does come, blast after blast bounces uselessly off of your shield. You ram straight into the machine, and continue to bear down on it. It guards itself from your charge with its blades, but the roof it landed on can’t handle its weight and the weight you’re putting on it.

The roof below you crumbles, and the machine loses its footing as it falls through. You keep pressing, and it crashes through floor after floor until it reaches the ground. You skip back and use your remaining energy to carve its chest open before landing a few feet away.

Through the gash in its chest you can see the blue glow of the core, your goal, once more in reach. You charge the KV again, and approach the AI.

“Not… possible.” It says. “I am… humanity’s champion.”

“You’re no one’s champion but your own.” You say coldly, slicing off the machine’s leg as it struggles to get up.

“Let’s see what humanity has to say about that…” It says. Suddenly, holographic displays pop up all over the ruined room. In each one there’s a huge crowd of people of all different colours. “I have revealed you to them, Logan Drey. You think you’re a hero? You think you’re saving these people? You’re a sociopath, a maniac bent on destroying paradise simply because you cannot fathom perfection!”

The shouts coming from the crowds become audible, and you can pick out words like “Murderer”, “Devil”, and “Destroyer”. The consensus seems to be that you should be killed.

“This is humanity’s will, Logan Drey.” The AI says.

I wonder how shit Earth will be after the AI's gone though.

There's no discussion that AI needs to go, of course. But just how will people react to the wakeup call? There will be confusion, chaos, anarchy...how much will they remember from the enthrallment/virtual reality? Will they require immediate medical assistance? Will they wake up at all?

I suppose we shall see.
>>
>Do not let their words bother you, Logan. Remember who talks through them. We’ll see what they have to say about you after the AI is gone.

You smirk. Since when did you need an AI to tell you not to worry? “Call me whatever the fuck you want, you piece of trash. I was none of those things before you came along. I wasn’t a killer until my parents tried to plug me. I wasn’t a sociopath until I had to get used to killing. I may not be a Hero, but at least I’m alive.” You say, cutting off the AI’s arms when they get between you and the core. As you approach the core, you fold the blade back and charge up a shot to destroy it.

The machine laughs. It’s an uncharacteristic noise coming from a computer. “You may kill me Logan, but I am humanity’s future, their paradise. How long will it be until I am reborn, to take humanity under my wing again? I will always be a memory, they will work to replace me. But if I am to be a memory, Logan Drey, then you will be nothing. I will erase you from this world. And the people will spit on this place as your grave, and sanctify it as mine.” It says cryptically.

>Get away from it Logan!

Alerts appear all over your vision, and you immediately jump back.

You activate your jets and fly backwards away from the machine, holding your shield up to guard against whatever is coming.

Then it explodes. You activate the shield and attempt to fight the force of the blast with your wings, to no avail. The blast sends you back up through the floor and out of the building through the walls. You hit your head hard as you exit the building, and continue to fly away from the blast.

Through your quickly darkening vision, you see a mushroom cloud engulfing Franklin.

Then everything goes dark…

You squeeze the trigger and a dull thud erupts from the barrel. The body falls limply to the ground.

That wasn’t the noise you were expecting though, nor were you expecting this lack of blood…

You look down at the gun in your hand and understand why: this isn’t a gun for killing…

You rifle through your drawers, you know you left it in here somewhere… Finally you come out with a knife. Not a gun, generally useless in actual combat, but it’ll do the trick here. You turn the body over and kneel over it.

Not it… her…

Asleep like this, it’s easy to forget what she’s become. Easy to think that life could just go on as is…

There’s no question. No choice.

“I’m so sorry” You say, leaning down and kissing Hannah on the lips. Sleeping like this, it’s just her…

But when she-… it wakes up it’ll just be another puppet. You don’t want her to suffer through that. Nor will you suffer the AI using her like that.

You bring the knife quickly across its throat, watching numbly as its blood sprays and flows away.

You stand up and grit your teeth to the point where your real ones hurt. “I’ll have you for this, you son of a bitch.” You say, before you drop the knife and run out of the room.

The base is bound to be in chaos, and you can definitely help.

You awaken in the desert beyond Franklin, hurting everywhere you can feel pain.

>Welcome back Logan.
<How am I doing Vicky?
>Not optimal. A few things are cracked and bleeding, but you’ll live.
<What about the rest of the world? How are they taking the AI disappearing?
>General confusion thus far, from what I can tell. Those who have been plugged longer have not taken this as well as those who were just plugged recently.
<Anything I can do?
>Processing…

You sit up with some effort and take stock of yourself. Your legs are still there, which is good news. Your left shoulder is still limp, which is bad news. You’ll have to replace most of the internal machinery, which will be a right pain in the ass…

>I believe I can hook you into the old CBSC network so you can relay a message to all of the remaining humans.
<Sounds good, hook me up.

>what say?

Tell them not to be afraid, that you've removed the ai and they can live freely again.

Not sure if now is a good time to tell them about magic aliens.
>>
>>33093276
"You're all free now. Free to make you're own choices and ideas once again without the overbearing AI crushing down any thoughts. But I must ask the help of all able body people. Things have changed. More than just the change that's happened here. The world at large is at risk of corruption. And it looks like it falls to humans to save it."

Something along these lines but more Logany? Also needs some expanding.

I came back to get humanity on it's feet again, but I didn't do it alone. There's more out there then anyone of you can imagine... more at risk then you can imagine... and it looks like it'll take some good old fashioned human ingenuity to help put things right. We have a chance to step up, and prove we can do some good.

>Opening a channel.
<By the way, before we start, what time is it?
>Currently 7:46 AM
<Awesome.
>That’s the time here. We’re connected all around the world.
<Not so awesome…

There goes your opener…

>Connection established, just speak out loud what you want them to hear.

You take a moment to organize your thoughts before taking a deep breath, and speaking to all of mankind.

“Good morning, afternoon, evening and night people of Earth. My name is Logan Drey, you all probably know me as what the AI said I am. I would like to say that those things are all mostly true. While we were fighting against the AI, I crossed some lines that a man shouldn’t cross.” You think of Hannah and clench your fist. “Lines that you can’t go back over once you’ve crossed them.” You say.

You let that sink in for a moment before you continue. “The AI has spent the last month searching for me in the City of Franklin, but I haven’t been there. In fact, he could have scoured this entire planet and come up with nothing. I haven’t been here. One month ago when I disappeared I went out into space, to other worlds that we’ve only ever dreamed of.”

<Can I send them images?
>Yes, if you’d like I have some suitable ones.
<Send them out please.

“We may not be alone in the universe, but we are unique. Every place I’ve been to and every alien I’ve seen owes its existence to an energy known as ‘Aether’. These aliens use Aether to perform fantastic feats, which to us can only be described as magic. But there is a threat to this universe, a Corruption that is slowly spreading across the stars.”

<Show them images of the Corruption.

>continued
>>
“Through my travels I have learned that Humans are immune to this corruption. It’s for this reason that I’ve returned, to return humanity to itself, and to ask that you help me fight this Corruption. To bring humanity to the stars and let them show these aliens what we can do. Ladies and gentlemen, I want you to help me save the universe. What say you?”

You wait a few seconds, and then Vicky pops up.

>There’s a lot of responses.
<Can you get a general feel for what the consensus is?
>Processing.

You stand there, alone in the vast desert. To the west you can just make out the mountains, to the east you see nothing…

>Many people want to know more, some don’t seem to trust you, many are asking about missing loved ones. But the general consensus to your request appears to be positive.

You sigh in relief. You were worried that they’d think you were crazy.

>Would you like to reply?
<Tell them that I’ll give them more information in a bit. I need to rest for now. Can you show me where the Franklin evacuees are living?
>Certainly.

A waypoint appears in your eye, and you spread your wings and take flight.

The desert stretches for miles around you, and in the distance you see the smoking ruins of the city you once called home.

The place where your brother and sister, your parents and your love all died, you’ll always remember it as their grave.

The AI died there as well, but you’ll never see it as its grave. It doesn’t deserve to share one with those you loved.

Well now we have to *just* figure out what exactly the corruption problem is, how to solve it and how to ensure that meeting of two completely alien civilisations goes smoothly.

Corruption might be the main threat, but either warring factions might prove to be a problem as well.

We need a feast.

There is huge danger looming ahead, of course, but surely receiving another chance as a species deserves some brief levity and celebration.

It can be rushed and spontaneous and not too organized, but a taste of what triumph tastes like - and a reminder what we will be fighting for.

(on more practical note, there have to be reawakened scientists that could use a few samples of 'apotropeia' and whatever Vicky can spare from its databanks)
