PART TWO OF THREAD TWO

“Right,” you declare. “Let's begin.”

You both step to the firing lane, where you motor a target to fifteen yards. You slip the loose shot back into the magazine, and hand both to Shinji.

“Slide the magazine into the grip of the pistol until it clicks. Ease the slide, the top bit back, until it locks, and then let go. It'll go forward itself. Don't touch the safety or trigger until I tell you.”

He does as you command, and for a moment you wonder why you never got a teaching degree. Right, too busy fighting. “Take aim,” you tell him, and he does so as best he can. It's a one handed grip, and he's leaning backwards, but there's maybe a hint of innate talent there. You can work with this. Stepping behind him,you adjust his body until he's in a proper two-handed stance, left shoulder and foot forward, right shoulder and foot back. “Right. Flip the safety off, and begin firing.”
>>
>>33098096
He does so, and you wince in quiet contemplation. At least three of the shots hit paper. He seems dejected by his lack of success.

If it's true, this. If not, tell him a story about a time we royally fucked up shooting (excluding the recent embassy fiasco) or tell him about that guy in basic that ended up a sniper or something.

I think that saying he'll git gud will just backfire. But this could also backfire.

“Don't get too down about it. It's something new, and it takes time. We'll try to have you proficient, if not excelling, faster than it took you to learn the cello. How about another magazine?” He nods shyly, but then winces. You could kick yourself- you forgot ear protection. He's a novice shooter, of course he's not used to the sound. You retrieve a pair of earplugs for him, and tell him to put them in.

He does so without reluctance, and you hand him another magazine. “Slide the magazine in, rack the slide, aim, fire?” He queries, and you nod. He picked up on the order of things faster than you- you tried to rack the slide first, not shove the magazine in.

“Use the sights, Shinji. I know the Eva has a targeting computer, but you've got your eyes and brain, and that combination beats a computer any day of the week. Want to guess why?”

“Because a computer can't... think for itself beyond what's put into it?”

“Right you, right you are. So. You're aiming down the sights, you've got the hands in the proper positions... Fire when ready, Shinji.” He proceeds to empty the second magazine, worsen your developing tinnitus, and score better than he did previously. Eight shots hit this time.

Saving Kaworu is impossible because he's literally born to either 1) Die or 2) Kill every other living thing on earth.

There's a reason he committed suicide by Shinji.

>Well done, then. One last magazine.

“Well done, then! One last magazine before we switch to rifles?” He nods almost eagerly, and you grin, handing him the mag. He follows the chain of events almost as though they were a ritual, which, you supposed, they might be, and he began firing, this time trying to keep his shots controlled.

“Eleven out of sixteen shots. Rapid improvement. We'll get you to where you can fire for a couple of hours at a time and score sixteen out of sixteen in the X-ring every ti-” You're cut off by the PA system going off.

“All Section Two Agents to report to Armory Six Alpha. Code Orange; possible enemy ships reported approaching territorial Japanese waters. Repeat: All Section Two Agents....” It keeps going, and the alarm is blaring. Setting your shoulders, you turn to Shinji. “Get to the Cages. You'll be safest in the Eva, I should think.”

He nods and hands you your pistol back. You draw three more clips from the box of them, and then take off for Armory Six Alpha at a sprint. The armory/shooting range floor is expansive- it has to be: Section Two snipers need to be able to practice.

You make it quick enough, and are among the first of the Agents filtering in from the floors above and below.

“What's going on, Captain Thierry?”

“The Russian Pacific fleet is conducting maneuvers dangerously close to Japanese waters. Japan alerted us and the UN at the same time, and contacted the United States Seventh Fleet, which is itself conducting exercises about two days sailing away. That's all we know so far. Section Two has gone on high-alert in case the Russians decide to try to punch past the city's defenses and into Tokyo-3 and the Geofront itself. I've assignments here for all of you. Cryan, since you're floating, you get to pick.

The Russians know about the EVA. They wouldn't be doing this is they didn't have some way to mitigate them. Plus, our first priority is still Shinji.

>Head to the Cages.

“I'll take the Cages, thanks.”

“All right, then. There's already a company sized detachment down there in battle rattle and with rifles. You'll take command, Cryan. Don't fail me.” You nod, and head for Armory Two Bravo, where you change into the black kit Section Two prefers, and which resembles SAS black kit. You scan the radio frequencies for the company you're supposed to be commanding, before finally coming across it.

“Cage Company this is Agent Cryan, over.”

“Go ahead, Agent, over.”

“The Captain has ordered me to assume command of you fellows for the duration of this alert. Can you give me troop strength and disposition, over?”

“Affirmative, Agent. We're an-strength company, with two-hundred fifty men, divided into four platoons of four squads, with an HQ squad making up the difference, sir. Dispositions are as follows: We've set up barricades and blockades to each and every entrance on the regular level. All elevators are secured, with overwatch on the higher catwalks and platforms, as well as men securing the lower walk-ways., over”

“Affirmative. I'm enroute now.” First you've got to draw a rifle and ammunition, though.

>M4A1

You grab an M4A1 and mags for it, before going on your merry Irish way. You've used them before, when you couldn't get an L85A2, which was often.

The elevator ride down to the Cages is interminable, and you radio ahead to inform them you're coming. Wondering if you can pick up any music, you roll through the frequencies. To your disappointment, you don't find anything. Sighing, you're resigned to the goddamn Muzak.

Finally, FINALLY, it ends, and you step off the elevator and into the waiting muzzles of multiple M4s. “Sup guys,” you greet, and the barrels lower.

“Agent Cryan. Glad to see they've given us an actual officer for this.”

“Yes, well, here's hoping it's nothing serious, Agent...?”

“Nakimura, sir.”

“Right, then. I see nothing wrong with your troop dispositions. How many on/off duty at a time?”

“I've got them split into three shifts, sir. First shift sleeps while second guards, and third does the same. I wanted 'em well rested and ready to raise Hell if needed.”

[]”Carry on, then. You've done well.”

“Carry on then, Agent Nakimura. You've done well enough. I don't suppose there's actually anything for me to do?” He has the decency to look ashamed as he shakes his head, and you sigh.

“Right, well. Go ahead and catch some rest, Agent.I'll handle things here for a bit.” He thanks you and is gone. You take a seat behind one of the barricades, using components for the Eva inside their crates as the barricades.

“Christ,” you mutter. “I think I'd rather be the besieger than the besieged.” Someone plops down next to you, and you can see it's Shinji in his plug suit.

“R-really?” He asks you, and you nod. “At least as the besieger I set the pace and keep myself from going mad with boredom. “Hmm,” he grunts.

“Mr. Cryan, may I ask what keeps you fighting, even against other people?”

"Hell of a question. Part of it is because once you become a soldier, you never quite stop being a soldier. So it really becomes less about being in a fight and being in the RIGHT fight. I can sleep easy knowing this is a good fight, stopping giant monsters from killing us all. NERV is, is you'll excuse the phrase, doing God's work."

"So I can fight, and there's a fight worth having. Really just simple math past that."

NERV is, if you'll excuse the phrase, doing God's work. And really, so some poor other mother's son doesn't have to.”

“Well, I don't like fighting,” Shinji says quietly beside you. “I don't think anyone should!”

“You're right. They shouldn't. But some do. And sometimes they're the bad guys that need dealt with, and sometimes they're the good guys that do the dealing with of the bad guys. It's not a black and white world, Shinji. But if you can find someone or something worth holding onto and fighting for, to make the world a better place for them, good on you.”

“D-do you have someone to fight for, Agent Cryan?”

“God save Ireland, Shinji, but you ask the hard questions.

“Not yet, and I don't know if I will. But fighting so you kids can find someone to share life with you? 's a fight I'd fight any day of the week, and weekends, too.”
