At first the elders thought it was a plague, or a curse by some kind of dark sorceror. Children were increasingly being born with bear-like features. Some had claws, some had fur. Others came out of the womb as cubs and later transformed into perfect little babies. The purvailing rumor became that there was a trickster God flitting throughout the city, raping women in the guise of a bear. Oddly, not many thought there was a rash of bear-boning by the young women of the city, though a few old codgers believed this to be true.
Whatever the cause, after a whole generation grew up with an alarming number of bear-like citizens, it was clear something had to be done. Any family known to bear the "ursine" trait or curse or burden or boon (in some circles) prepared, at the behest of the all-powerful elder council, to embark upon a treacherous journey. Soon the elders summoned their powerful magic and sent the group haphazardly through a portal to a faraway land where their like would never bother their utopic society again.
The air sizzles on the mountain your people landed on. All-told, only twenty seven members of the nearly two hundred exhiles made it here.
Luckily, among those who landed, the supply donkeys have all made it safely with the democratically elected leader (who also happened to be the oldest ursine human in your city) smack dab in the middle.
[Choose a name and profession for the leader. He has a bonus to any kind of climbing, can turn to his bear form at will, and has the potential to be a ferocious hand-to-hand fighter.]
A group of five warriors also made it through. Their ability to easily transform any portion of their bodies into bear-form at a moments notice have made them some of the fiercest warriors from the home nation, and the elders there were sad to see them go.
cont...
>>
>>33113685
Nine women of working and child-bearing age also made it through, four carrying the trait, five who had been related to members of the exhile group and decided to accompany them.

An old crone who does not carry the trait also made it. In the old country, she'd been an esteemed medicine woman.

A middle-aged man without the trait known to all as "the tinkerer" also made it in, but his donkey and cart are nowhere to be found. His knowledge is locked in his head, but it will take time for him to remake his vital tools.

Five skilled farmers, all with the trait, made it through without their wives or children.

Two blacksmiths (one ursine, the other his twin brother without the trait) are here with their donkey and cart, and the basics for their profession.

Three parentless children also made it through. All are traited and happy to be away from the mistreatement they received in the old country.

Pick a name for leader. Stat sheat and map to come.

DELICIOUS DUBS ADDITION (You pointed out that I've rolled dubs a bit, and the gods have shined upon your fervent worship of me, your OP. You get 2 full actions this turn, of my choosing among those voted upon.)

The women and the non-combat type males set about breaking camp and setting up a makeshift campsite a safe distance from the cave.

The tinkerer sets about wandering across the top of the mountain your elders tossed you to.

He fumbles through his long coat and grasps a small metal object from his homeland. It is a scouting hummingbird, nearly out of charge, that will draw a rough map of the surrounding area.
He tosses it into the air and it circles the mountain where you are, returning to the tinkerer (MAP UPDATE GET) a short time later.
It reveals that there is another entrance to the cave on the far side of the mountain, and only one passable path to reach the level area that houses your people
The brave leader, Heinrick Von Bearenstein gathers the five brave warriors and they head toward the cave, knowing this may be the perfect place to start a new life.

The party heads west, and the chamber opens up into a natural room. It's easily large enough for the entire settlement to sleep on the ground in bear form (with a few in cots above them if they can't transform), but there are webs all over the walls and ceiling.

There is only one exit, a small opening that could only fit one man at a time.

Heinrich quiets his warriors and the sound of skittering can be heard from the corridor.

It's faint at first, but gets louder as you listen. Whatever it is, there must be a lot of them.

Heinrich Von Bearingstein spreads his arms wide.

"Ours has not been an easy lot! We're freaks, cursed with power that terrifies our brethren."

"But today we have an opportunity to carve a new home from these rocks. TODAY WE MAKE OUR DESTINY"

Heinrich roars, transforms into a mighty bear, and dives headlong into the corridor, his five fierce warriors close on his heals.

cont...
>>
>>33115148

The skittering is now as loud as a waterfall, whatever it is is definitely aware they have company.

Heinrich, in bear form, plows through the corridor into the next room in the cave and lands face-to-face with a giant spider.

No hesitation, Heinrich lunges on the beast and tears it asunder.

The corridor has almost no light, but a few holes in the roof provide enough for the enhanced vision possessed by the ursine warriors.

The spiders, unaccustomed this sort of interference in their home are startled by the onslaught and dozens of them fall within seconds of the initial blitz.

The spiders dive on their attackers and begin attacking en masse.

By the end of the scuffle, there is only one spider still alive, an even larger spider who is clearly the queen, surrounded by a wall of spider-corpses.

The ursine warriors suffered minor scratches and cuts. Nothing serious.

Heinrich and the five warriors surround the spider-queen, who has backed into a corner, clearly clogging a hole of some kind in the cave, and is frantically trying to bury herself in the corpses of her children.

The enormous spider (even by "we just fought a cave full of giant spider" standards) continues to pile the corpses of its young upon itself, and barely reacts to Heinrich as he edges closer.

Heinrich shudders and transforms back to his man-form, naked and nearly blind, touches his forehead with his left hand and stretches out his right toward the spider-queen.

She shudders, raises up her enormous form to its full majesty, and jabs her right foreleg with lightning speed at Heinrich.

The five warriors roar in unison but Heinrich holds up a human arm to silence them. His eyes widen and the spider makes contact with his mind.

She is an ancient brood-mother, who once drank from a magical spring that gave her extra-normal abilities.

She expresses sadness at the loss of her children, but hope that Heinrich's exposure in his human form means he isn't as savage as they seemed.

Their minds sync and though Heinrich struggles to navigate her experiences and many years, she has no trouble taking in his entire life.

She fills Heinrich's mind with the last moment in their homeland, expresses sadness at his loss, flashes another image of the corpses of her children, then another of the chamber below her, filled with thousands upon thousands of eggs.

A voice shakily coalesces from the clicking in their mental link.

"Please... Let my children live. I can be of use to your kind. We are outcasts among our races."

A (Rolled 98, lucky ass)

Heinrich labors to speak through the bond, but is able to convey his willingness to work out a treaty. He learns much from their conversation, not the least of which that the spider queen is able to designate her children in the egg-sac, and is capable of controlling vast hordes of her kind, but has not yet been able to build a strong enough generation of warriors to do anything but try and survive.

Something lurks deeper on in the cave, something she can only show as a flurry of brown hulking behemoths and razor claws, that likes to devour her kind by the dozens, and your assault came far too soon after a recent raid by them to have any chance of rebuilding.

You caught her off guard, and wiped away all but her single greatest warrior, guarding the egg cavern.

The five warriors sit back impatiently as their nude leader leans against the giant spider with deep concentration on his face.

Minutes pass, and Heinrich begins speaking aloud.

"This beast, [Pick a name, first come first serve], is ancient and mighty, but has surrendered to us and wishes to live in harmony. She will provide protection in times of peril, fighting alongside us."

"In return, she asks for our dead. Ours, and any we create. The bodies of our kind will serve as incubators for those children she pre-ordains as mighty warriors, grand web-weavers, and future princesses. The bodies of our enemies we lay before her shall be used as food for her common children of all castes."

"I am asking much of our people, to bury our dead as food for something so seemingly grotesque, but she can aid us as we establish our new home, our new life."

As a show of good faith, she implants the last "map" her scouts reported into Heinrich's head.

The choice is your, folks.

Let us "A".

The terms are accepted and the bear-warriors shed their battle-form to stand naked around the spider queen. She extends an arm to each of them, one by one, and establishes a link.

The six bear-men in the chamber gain a boon, "Cheldrassa's embrace" and may now communicate freely with her brood.

They reclaim their gear from the other chamber.

Your party plants a single lantern in the cavern where you charged from, and it is decided that everything beyond that point will belong to Cheldrassa and her children.

Now Wat?!
