“Oh,” you say. “So you really are Flash Gordon. I was just joking when I said that in my head, but… okay, I guess. So your scifi gun really works then, right? It shoot lasers?”

"Lightning," Derek says.

"Cool," you say. Lightning guns. And you have a lightning sword. Coincidence? Hmm. (-2 Stress: 87/100)

Sometimes you feel like you’ll just believe anything people tell you, but you’ve seen enough movies and read enough books to know that when magic is real, the most absurd explanations are often the most plausible ones And, as always happens in fictional mediums, the skeptical characters are always proven wrong in due time. You’re just skipping that step.

“So guy, what’s your name?” you ask, putting the bewonderment of extra-dimensional travelers aside for the time being. “I mean. If we’re going to bust out of here I guess I need to know

“Frederick,” he says. “But Derek suits me fine.” He points at the masked guy who is over by the sealed vault door. “My friend’s name is Zote. You?”

“Sierra,” you say. You get up. You may be wounded and bleeding and whatnot, but you could probably still take more hits than a regular person any day of the week. “And you can call me Sierra. Let’s get the hell out of here. We can figure out flags later.”
>>
“Sounds reasonable,” he says. Derek fetches his spindly metal gun thing and the two of you go over to the vault door.

Tarris the goblin looks back at your approach. “The vault is closed,” says the goblin, its voice weak. “The mechanism thou set in motion hast sealed us in. We are doomed to die.”

You look up at the blank back of the vault door before you. “I might be able to unlock it from this side,” you say. “I just need somebody to walk me through it. I mean, you unlocked it in like, a minute. We can do this, right?”

“We shall try,” says Tarris, voice shrill. “Do as I say, demon.” The goblin walks to the door and points at a spot on the door, slightly above its head. “This gear here, inside. It first must be turned.”

Derek and his masked friend Zote stand back and watch you as you do stuff.

You do as Tarris says, turning gears and more with your control over shadows. And you’re doing very well, until you get to the last mechanism.

“Turn the shaft, like this,” says the goblin, pantomiming the angle at which you’re supposed to turn the stuff.

You turn the shaft, like that, and you hear a satisfying clunk. (-4 PP: 1/25)

Everyone looks happily at the vault door. And then there’s a cascade of thunks and clicking, and then a booming silence. Tarris makes a frustrated noise. “It has locked again,” the goblins says. “One more time!”

You kneel down, feeling tired. “I don’t have enough in me for one more time,” you say bitterly. (+5 Stress: 93/100) You squeeze your eyes shut and try to take deep, slow breaths. You don’t have time for this. Borislav’s counting on you. You need to get out of this vault like, five minutes ago. “How is it this hard to open? You did it in like, a minute,” you say.

“The door unlocked of its own accord when I took to the task,” says Tarris, confused.

“Wait,” you say, remembering back. “Derek, you said something earlier like, oh yeah, that makes sense how you got in the vault, ‘cause you’re American. What did you mean by that?”

“The flag must have reacted to you trying to get it,” he says. Then Derek’s face lights up. “That’s it! Sierra, what does the your flag represent?”

Well, it represents a whole bunch of stuff. The salient one right now, though, is the one thing you don’t have right now. Like, not politically or anything but more like physically. “Freedom,” you say.

“The flag got you in here, it can get us out,” says Derek. “Use the flag.”

You unsling the canister from your back and open it up. You look down at the rolled up flag within. You pull it out and hang it out in front of you. It just looks like a regular old flag.

“How do I use it?” you ask.

Derek points violently at the door. “I don’t know, it’s your flag - just use it!”

You feel like you're out of your element. But this whole first flag thing is supposed to be impressive, isn't it? So is there any reason why you shouldn't be able to use it?

Damn, yo. This quest has some of the hardest DCs I've ever seen in quests.
It's fair, I guess. Opening a goblin vault from the inside, blind, using shadow powers. I can see how that would be tough. Still tho...
>>
>>33125141
So how dyou figure we use the flag?
Think about going home?

>>
>>33125253
I was hoping being good at lock picking and having super hearing would give us a bit more of an edge. But, hopefully the flag works.

And we could really use a gob to ambush, it'd let us get some PP and health back.
>>
The longer you hold the flag in your hands, the more certain you are that you can probably use it to do anything, if you needed to. And if you hold the symbol of your great nation, there’s nothing that can plausibly stop you from pursuing liberty, whether it’s real physical liberty, or like, fake figurative liberty. And it doesn’t even matter if you don’t know how to use it – lots of patriots didn’t know how to do the stuff they were doing, but that didn’t stop them. You feel strangely, inexplicably sure of yourself – and, more importantly, you feel a swelling confidence in the pillars of your great republic. (-25 Stress: 68/100) (+5 PP: 6/25) (+1 HP: 13/25)

Wait. What pillars? And isn’t the US a democracy?

“Use the flag,” you say to yourself, almost as a mantra. Without you thinking about what you’re doing, you throw the flag over your shoulders and tie it off around your neck like a cape. Then you walk up to the vault door and push on it with your hands.

The metal groans under your hands. Even though you’re not pushing very hard, you feel machinery within the door start to give way. Metal pops and snaps, and the hinges of the door screech in protest.

Without warning, the door tilts outward. It falls. And then it crashes onto the ground before you with a resounding bang, the edges warped and twisted from where its been wrenched out of its restraints.
>>
>>33125355
>>33125141

We can just ask one of them for a boost, can't we? We dont need to kill people to drain PP
One guys a wizard or something. Ask him if we can drain him a bit.
>>
>>33125423

“That’s… that’s incredible,” says Derek, somewhere behind you.

You step up onto the vault door and walk out into the room, with the others following behind. That’s right, you think to yourself – three souls liberated from the confines of darkness. You can almost feel the oppression in this place. There’s not a shred of justice or social equity to be found in this whole goblin nation. Warren. It fills you with a sense of indignation, and you’re unsure as to why. (+5 Stress: 73/100)

You walk off the edge of the vault door and drop to the ground.

All the statues around the edge of the room shift on their pedestals, and step down. The massive, stone feet hit the ground in a chorus of booming thuds. The statues, you note, are goblins, each eight feet tall, and there are seven of them. They face you and the others.

This may be a little much.

>>
>>33125435
This is not a fight we want to stick around for, we definitely don't want a slugfest with golems, and with all this noise there's probably goblin reinforcements inbound.

Look for where the exits are, we need to know where to go.

Snuffing the lights might help, utter darkness, the golems are giant rocks so we can easily hear them, even in complete darkness, and may still be able to see a bit. While they, hopefully, can't see and will possibly even smash into each other. While we lead our party to FREEDOM past these jailers.

If we have a chance to get on top of one of the statues and drain it that'd be nice, but don't take unnecessary risks. We can also, possibly, use FREEDOM strength to push/throw one statue at another to clear a path.
>>
If we fight now, we may as well use everything at our disposal. Maybe not much that uses PP as we don't have many left right now, but noise isn't an issue anymore. Not after the door. So the gun and, probably more important, Zelathis, lightning sword should be our go to options.

“We’re getting out of here,” you say, sounding unreasonably calm to yourself, “and we’re going through those statues to do it.” You draw your sword and charge.

The three statues barring your immediate path run at you.

There’s a crack of thunder, and a bolt of lightning streaks overhead to slam into the chest of the one on the left – it shatters and crumbles apart above the waist. The legs move for a second and then fall and break on the ground. You ignore it, and focus on the two coming at you. The first stone goblin reaches down to grab you, and you whirl your sword in a wide arc to meet it.
>>
>>33125819

The blade hits the statue’s forearm, and there’s another crack of thunder. A surge of force discharges along the the length of your sword arm, into the hilt, and out the point of the sword to the contact point with the golem. Then, there’s a hollow BANG, and the statue’s arm shatters in an explosion of electrical energy, shoving it back and out of your way as it tries to regain balance. (ZLS: 4/5)

The other statue swipes at you, but you charge in to its waist and under the attack, grapple it, and pivot to hurl it along in the direction it was running. Though the statue probably weighs like, a ton, it lifts and handles like it’s made of Styrofoam. You heave it off its feet and throw it aside, sending it crashing into the floor and giving you and everyone else an avenue to escape. (+4 PP: 10/25)

The other fourstatues close in on your sides and behind you as Derek, Zote, and Tarris run by. Your odd calm and confident energy increases. (-5 Stress: 68/100) (+5 PP: 15/25) (+1 HP: 14/25)

You run after them back down the hall, with the statues, both whole and mangled, in pursuit. You catch up to Zote, who is bringing up the tail of the group, as you run down the dark hall that leads to the iron door. He pulls a stick grenade off his belt, primes it, and tosses it over his shoulder without looking.

You come up to the door, but with a bunch of statues and a grenade behind you, there’s no time to waste opening it. You burst ahead of Derek and Tarris and shoulder slam the door. The entire assembly bashes off its hinges as if hit by a wrecking ball, and you continue forward.

An explosion erupts behind you, and you’re hit in the back by a rush of hot air and a smattering of rock chips. You look up – at the end of the dark hall, where it connects back to the main tunnel, there’s like, ten armored goblins armed with guns and a couple golems. They must have heard the commotion and come running.

They ready to shoot you and everybody with you.

And yet, you feel unstoppable. Is this healthy? (-5 Stress: 63/100) (+5 PP: 16/25) (+1 HP: 15/25)

The flag is one of the first flags created after the Revolutionary War, and because of that it considered a symbol of what that war represented at the time: freedom, the pursuit of liberty, etc. Basically, the belief in the American ideal has turned the flag associated with that ideal into an item of magical power

Whether it’s healthy or not, you’re getting too righteously indignant to put up with any more goblin BS. You put on the speed, outpacing everyone and dragging every single shadow along with you. The goblins start shooting, but you shove the darkness forward like a huge, impenetrable wedge – gunfire ricochets off the shield. Shots pepper the walls as you charge, and a couple even bounce back to strike the shooters. (-5 PP: 11/25)

They begin wavering and backing up as you reach the entrance, but it’s too late for them. You feel a raging fire build within you. Without thinking, you leap high into the air and dive right into their midst, a twisting vortex of blackness, and crash into several goblins. And then you fucking explode.

Golems, goblins, and more goblins are blown apart by the force, the intense heat vaporizing those nearest you.

>New ability: Explosive flare. Cost: 8 PP. Explode with the force of a grenade, and set everything around you on ablaze.

You land on your knees, and slide across the blackened, charred stone floor. The oppressors are no more – this is what it means to be a true American. (-2 Sanity: 86/100) (-8 PP: 3/25) The scent of cooked meat and blood is ripe in the air, and the carnage around you is unspeakable. You feel that something is not quite right. But how could being so right feel wrong? There’s so much blood everywhere. (+7 Stress: 70/100)

The edges of your sleeves are smoldering, so you quickly pat them out. You feel weak, but you also feel stronger. You think you’re starting to get used to this whole flag thing. (+7PP: 10/25) (-5 Stress: 65/100)

“Impossible power,” says Tarris, running to your side and surveying the scene. “We must push onward.”

You hear a chorus of screeching voices echoing down the tunnel from where you think Boneskin was having his meeting deal with Borislav. Sounds like more than a couple goblins.

Zote and Derek come up, checking around for threats – but you’ve already dealt with everything. You’re that much closer to true freedom. “What are you?” says Derek, wavering between horror and awe. “I’ve never seen anything like that before!”

Zote, for his part, notes the dead with a satisfactory nod.

"And in Utumno he gathered his demons about him, those spirits who first adhered to him in the days of his splendour, and became most like him in his corruption: their hearts were of fire, but they were cloaked in darkness, and terror went before them; they had whips of flame. Balrogs they were named in Middle-earth in later days."

“I’m damn proud to be an American, that’s what,” you say, pushing yourself up to your feet. You feel shakier than you should, and yet your footing is completely sure. You take a second to look at your cape-flag, and find it untouched. It doesn’t even have a smudge on it. As is right. Spotless. Glorious.

“We must push onward!” Tarris screams into your face.

What the? When did the goblin get in front of your face? You must have got distracted for a second. “Yeah,” you say, turning toward the sound of shrieking goblins. “Onward. Less talking more running,” you say, taking off.

You lead everyone down the tunnel. It’s kind of funny, actually – everybody’s just kind of accepting you leading them around everywhere. Derek and Zote don’t look like the follower types, but they’re just going along with your decisions without question. It’s probably because you all want the same thing.

You run into the opening cavern, and find goblins are everywhere, running around every which way. This whole room has been shaped into a kind of stadium, with bench-style carved into the rock around you.
>>
>>33127041

In the center of the cave, there’s a huge cloud of thick mist, out of which comes pained and furious goblin screeching. As you watch, a broken goblin body flies out of the fog and smashes to the ground, its face torn off.

“Friend of yours?” asks Derek.

Your head begins to pound in time with your heart. It’s not quite a headache. It’s like a rush of adrenaline. (-5 Stress: 60/100) (+7PP: 17/25)

A rush of adrenaline that demands you find Boneskin and depose of his tyranny, right this very moment. But you don’t even know anything about Boneskin, except he’s a goblin and his name is Boneskin – why does the thought of him make your blood boil? (+8 Stress: 68/100) (-1 Sanity: 85/100)

“Borislav! Reeber!” you shout at the fog. “Time to go!”

And while they’re coming along, you can go run this monarchy into the ground. Should only take like, two minutes, right? One more tyrant deposed, score one for justice. (-1 Sanity: 84/100) You raise one set of claws. “Fire bat lizard, I choose you,” you say, focusing a shape of power into the form of an imp. There’s a flash of fire and smoke, and when it clears there is a fire bat lizard about the size of a cat perched on your forearm. (-5 PP: 12/25) “Raise hell,” you tell it.

The imp shrieks at you and then takes off, soaring through the air and snarling at everything.

You scan the crowd of goblins, and spot a squadren of plate-armored goblins hurrying away from the scene. At their center is a goblin with a short walking stick and a set of lavender robes. Its head is an angular skull, stretched over with skin. Boneskin is a fitting name, it seems.
>>
>>33127750
You start stalking toward the tyrant with your imp darting between panicking goblins, scratching heads, biting fingers, and lighting clothes on fire. You’re mad. You’re really mad. You really wish you’d just get the hell out of here, but the call of duty must take precedence in these matters. (-5 Stress: 63/100) (+1 HP: 16/25) (+8 PP: 20/25)

“Whither doth thou go?” asks Tarris, from behind you. “We must flee!”

“Forget Boneskin! We’re here for the flag!” yells Derek. “What about your friends?”

Your assured sense of righteousness falters – you’re not here to change the world, you’re here for – why are you here again? (+10 Stress: 73/100) (-1 Sanity: 83/100)

You stop walking and turn on Derek, staring him straight in the eye. You find his selfishness disgusting. “You’re a man of Etenrhine. You should know better than anyone that the cause of God’s justice demands sacrifice,” you say, narrowing your eyes at him. After everything he’s been through, he’s learned nothing! “Your brother understood that freedom isn’t free for the taking,” you tell him. “It has a price, and Gudfred willingly paid it.” (-2 Sanity: 82/100) (+10 Stress: 73/100)

“How can you possibly – Sierra, your skin is cracking!” Derek says, looking panicked.

You’re not going to be dissuaded by superficial distractions – it’s not the appearance of a man that matters, but the characteristics of his heart. “He laid down his life willingly on the altar of liberty, and who are you to tell anyone not to do the same?” you ask, flexing your claws vengefully. “The fate of nations hangs in the balance!” (-2 Sanity: 80/100) (+10 Stress: 83/100)

Derek looks to you, then to the banner of freedom safely tied about your throat. “Sierra, take off the flag. Now,” he says. “It’s doing something to you. We’re escaping with your friends, remember?”
>>
>>33128565

That’s not right, you’re here for justice! “I… I’m just trying to do the right thing,” you say. “Wait – but….” You didn’t come here to kill Boneskin and start a revolution. You’re just… trying to… get out. You have the flag. That’s all that you’re trying to do, now. You didn’t want to do anything else – you don’t want to do anything else! Why’s it so important to you to go up and above the obligations of duty? (+3 Stress: 86/100)

You reach up to the knot to untie it. But if put the flag away, how will it inspire anyone to great causes? It’s empowering you to do the right thing! (+7 Stress: 93/100)

“I don’t care about doing the right thing!” you scream at yourself. You rip the flag off, open your carrying case, and stuff it back in, out of sight. The invisible weight of patriotic obligation lifts from your shoulders.

You feel much better now. (-20 stress: 73/100) (+7 Sanity: 87/100) You turn your attention to the fog and move that way. “Let’s get the hell out of here,” you say. The thought of the crazed thoughts you were having makes you feel violated, somehow. They weren’t yours.

As you come up on the cloud, Reeber leaps out to meet you, his huge hellish jaws stained with blood. He looks battle worn, but mostly intact. (Reeber: 10/16 HP) You rub his head. “Where’s Borya, buddy?” you ask him.

A bear lumbers out after the dog, cut and bleeding. (Borya: 29/53 HP) Borislav huffs at you, raising his massive bear face in an expression of relief.
>>
>>33128582

“Okay, you guys, this is these guys,” you say, introducing Zote, Derek, and Tarris to Borya and Reeber.

Zote doesn’t look impressed. Tarris just remains silent. “The pleasure is mine?” says Derek, looking between your two companions.

Reeber barks in reply.

“Let’s go,” you say, heading off.

Everybody fans out and you wind up following Borislav, who seems to know where he’s going more than anyone else except Tarris.

“Borya, let the goblin lead!” you shout.

The bear slows, and allows the goblin to climb on his back before starting running again.

You cut your way out of the cave. You blow away a couple of golems with your sword (ZLS: 2/5), while Zote mows down the occasional goblin that stops long enough to try to stop you. Borislav just tramples people, and Derek covers him with his revolver sidearm.

You get out of the chamber and into the cavern at large. You get your imp to head off the group and give some kind of illumination for Tarris to navigate by, speeding your flight back to the mirrors.
>>
>>33128602

From behind you, you hear the roar of ATVs on the move. “They pursue!” Tarris shouts.

You see Zote pull a device off his belt – it looks like a mine, except when he presses a button on it, it sprouts wriggling mechanical spider legs. He tosses it over his shoulder without looking, and you lose track of it as you keep your attention on going forward.

Soon, you come up into familiar terrain, and you see the mirrors ahead of you.

There’s an explosive crack from behind you as the mine finds a target, but the sound of 4x4 engines only continues growing louder. (+6 Stress: 79/100)

They’re so close to overtaking you.

But you're so close to making it out of here. If you just run faster, you can make it!

I'm betting the reason we took to the flag's influence like a fish to water was that we're a Landmaster. We're probably designed from the ground up to readily and easily accept all kinds of exotic, external power sources into ourself.

Jinx. 'Jinks' is part of the word 'hijinks.' A jinx, on the other hand, is a minor bad luck curse.

You lay on the speed, because sometimes, you just got to run away from your problems.

And you actually get there in time. Your group isn’t exactly slow. Obviously, Reeber and Borya are going slow just for you, while you get the idea from Zote’s long, easy strides that he’s going slow for Derek’s sake.

You get on the final approach to your mirror, even while gunfire starts peppering the ground and rock around you – good thing they’re on ATVs or whatever, it’s playing hell with their aim at this range.

Borislav pops back into human form, and Tarris drops to the ground on all fours. The goblin nods once at you, and then scrambles through the frame of a nearby mirror, the one with the super heavy oak frame, and vanishes. A second later, the glass cracks and shatters out of its frame, as if of its own accord.

Derek and Zote halt by a mirror a few yards from yours. It’s a tall, thin circle of a frame, with a simple silver border set with spheres of obsidian glass.

Zote turns his attention on what’s coming up on you. He drops to a knee and fires his SMG in short, controlled bursts at your pursuers. Each flash of color blinds you.

“Sierra, the flag!” says Frederick, holding out a hand, his lightning gun slung to his side. “Please!”

You wonder about his story. Why his brother died, and why he’s so set on getting some talisman of freedom to save his country. Did he ever have a chance at getting this thing if you hadn’t shown up? Or did he really just come at the wrong time? Or did you come at the right time to keep him from getting his hands on this thing?

And would it really make that much of a difference? You can't say for sure.

>Nope. (Go through your mirror.)
>Sorry. (Go through your mirror.)
>It belongs in a museum. (Go through your mirror.)
>Come with us! (They can talk to Crowther.)
>Be careful with it! (Throw him the flag.)

You can’t make this call. “Come with us!” you yell, waving him toward you. “We’ll figure it out!”

Derek is torn for a second, but then he turns to Zote and says a couple words.

The two run toward you.

“What is this?” Borislav asks, confused.

“Everyone through!” you yell, shoving Borislav through. Derek and Zote dodge through the mirror, followed by you and Reeber.

A moment of static passes, and then you’re in a quiet, abandoned basement.

You turn around and kick the mirror, but your foot just goes through it. Damn, how are you supposed to break this thing?

“Stand aside,” says Derek, readying his lightning rifle.

Zote grabs you by the collar and hauls you out of the way.

Derek sends a bolt of lightning into the mirror – the electricity catches in the smoky depths, and something ignites. The thunderclap of the report deafens you, about the same time the mirror’s glass explodes outward in a violent spray.

Luckily none of the pieces are big, and they all just bounce harmlessly off of you.

You all stand in silence for a moment. It’s quiet. You breathe a sigh of relief. It’s over. (-7 Stress: 72/100)

Borislav’s lost his lamp and gun, but at least he’s got his staff. Zote pulls a baton out, and clicks a switch on it. It extends as if spring loaded, and the head of it alights with a ghostly white glow. He holds it aloft like a torch, and looks warily about the empty basement. The electricity running through the cattle prod thing buzzes softly. He turns to Derek and growls out something that doesn’t sound too enthusiastic.

Derek nods, then looks at you. “Where are we?”

>The US. Welcome to San Fransisco.
>What’s your friend saying?
>I’ll set you guys up a meeting with the Magister. I need to give this flag thing to him – I figured he’s actually got the clout to say if we borrow it off or whatever, so you can talk to him.
>You can get back to wherever you’re from, right? I mean, you're not going to be like those guys on Sliders because you came here, right?

Did we show them our game face in the vault? If not, we should definitely don horns as we tell them they're in hell.

“So,” you say, “I uh. Couldn’t really make the call so… I thought you should talk to a guy who can, and I guess I didn’t really think about it, but,” you trail off, taking a second to compose your thoughts. You laugh. “You’re in San Fransisco now, buddy,” you say, kind of feeling stupid. “Sorry.”

Derek clenches his jaw when you tell him, but he doesn’t seem to react too much besides that. “We’ll think of something,” he says. “If coming here gives us a shot at that flag, then it’s worth it. We already skipped worlds once.”

Zote says something absolutely unintelligible, but probably rude.

“What’s he saying?” you ask.

“He says this would have been a lot easier if I’d just shot you in the back,” says Derek, his expression drained of feeling. “No offense.”

“Yeah, well, maybe it would have been a lot easier for me if you guys didn’t bumble in there,” you spit back.

“I’d say the same of you,” says Derek, “if it wasn’t my fault you were there in the first place.”

“What are you talking about?” you ask, not following his logic.
>>
>>33130608

Derek smiles faintly. “I’m a fortuamancer. I was hammering that vault with fate magic for days before something unlikely enough to open the vault strolled along and let us in,” he says.

“That’s… not magic,” you say. “That’s getting lucky. And wasting time.”

“I have nothing to prove,” he replies indifferently.

“Whatever,” you say. You turn around and walk toward the stairs, with Reeber at your side. “I’ll call the Magister and get you a meeting so you can… I don’t know, work something out.”

“I hope it’s that easy,” says Derek, following behind.

The Shroud of Turin would probably be a potent symbol of resurrection, right?

What if a necromancer got his hands on it and then made his way down into the Catacombs of Paris?

Depends on how receptive to external power and how much native magic he had, I assume. We mostly just got tons of PP, HP, and sanity-loss, as well as manifesting a new power that was already native to our type.

>>33130632
I wonder if we can use our landwell to open a door home for these guys.

Anyway, thanks for the thread!

Currently he probably not that much of a looker, he looked like pretty beat up and grimy before everything started exploding.

But give him a chance to clean up and he'll probably be pretty handsome, and he's probably pretty buff.

But really, the important question is how tasty his blood is.
