"Let doubt be a stepping stone, rather than a wall"-- Eledain Medara, founder of Mooncrest Academy.

Rat-ta-ta-ta-ratatack. Ra-ta-ta-ta-ratatack.

The trains rhythm is making it hard to stay awake, my companions blurring in and out of focus as I can feel myself loosing the battle against sleep. The last few days were so exciting and this must be the first time there's been any time just for myself since... then.

My thoughts turn back, and soon, I dream...

Before I was taken (or was it sent? It's so difficult to decide still), I used to be...

[] The sole daughter of a city guard and his wife. They were so proud when I was chosen! (+2 Streetwise, +1 Weapon lore -2 Refinement)
[] An orphan living with a moderately well-off aunt that didn't much like me. She's probably happy I'm gone... (+1 Refinement, -2 Sociability -2 Streetwise)
[] A priestess-in-training. Let's just say getting chosen one of the Old Gods was... they were not happy. (+2 Refinement, +1 Literacy -2 Sociability)

*Refinement deals with moving in a cultured environment
*Streetwise deals with commoner connections
*Sociability deals with how well you connect to others not in your clique and how personable you are. High sociability with low Streetwise can make the person come across as over-friendly in relevant environments, while unrefined social characters are generally seen as naive.

I don't really care which gets chosen...which is why I'm wondering what caused the hivemind to go full force here. Does /tg/ secretly dream of being related to a guardsman or solidly lower-middle-class or something?

The other two both involve loosing sociability, /tg/ cannot diplomance if you take away their sociability.

B-but that just makes it more challenging! It turns diplomancing into a full-on game rather than being a simple 'do you want friend yes/no? >yes'-

[X] Guard's daughter.
(+2 Streetwise, +1 Weapon lore -2 Refinement)
Knowledge: Armed Combat Basics, Law Basics, Underworld Basics,
Body structure: Trained I

You could say my life was a happy one. Our family was poor but reputable, my father often telling us that it was him, his peers and, perhaps, eventually myself that made sure order would prevail and society could live on.

I wasn't always happy with his lectures, but I made sure to pay attention when he taught me in the handling of the sabre, the baton, the gun and the Law Signs.

My thoughts drift back to the day I was chosen, a shiver running through me even now.

It's a strange thing to hear the Goddess call to us, in my case especially because I'd never been taught what her voice sounded like. "Youth knows many things yet understands very few". Seems like I understand what my mother used to say now.

When the call came I was

The call came at a time when it comes for many, though personally I had barely dared hope for it. The kind of things Witches do. The kind of people Witches are...
It can be scary.

Many of the older girls dream of the status it brings and the younger ones of adventure and marvels unforeseen, but when the dreams started coming, I had other things in mind. At first, it begins quite innocently. You begin to hear voices that aren't there, you think thoughts that don't seem to be your own.

Then, the night begins to change. No longer are your dreams but pale fancies barely remembered, but indeed they start to touch upon the night time thoughts of others... Repeatedly, an image impresses itself on your thoughts till you see it, even when waking.
---
A particularly strong RATATACK! jostles me back to wakefulness for a few moments and I look around, the young Adept beside me apparently unperturbed as she keeps on snoring softly.

I sigh, and before I know it am back to my dreams, back to the past.

----
It's the night that changed everything. The night the call came to me stronger than ever, no longer allowing to be ignored. I'm kneeling in the snow clad in nothing but a white robe, my mother speaking the prayers of before burning my bedsheets in a ritual older than the stones my knees are scraping against.

The cold and the excitement are making me shiver, my teeth clenched tightly so I don't make a sound.

Soon after, I hug my father for the last time and leave, knowing that until my return I, by all rights, will have ceased to exist in this town.

The breaks screech as the train halts, and just like that, the dream ends.

[] Push your way out of the train. Best not to think too much about the past.
[] Hang back, wait for the throng to clear.
[] Motivate your cabin mates to make haste alongside you.

Hesitantly I turn to the others, fumbling for words, at first intimidated by the aura of cool composure the girl in front of me seems to wear like a second skin.

"...I hate it"

"What?" I lean forward, wondering what she wants to say. Heavens, I can't have offended her already, right? Nobles are prickly, I hope she's not prickly, but whatifsheisandwh-- I take a breath and steady yourself. We're all the same here. Pa said those on top can't survive without those below holding them up. We're all the same here.

The girl waves and cuts off my thoughts abruptly, her voice sounding like the frozen northwind moving the glass chimes in front of our little shrine at home

"I hate when people don't speak up when they should. I hate when simple appearances tie everyone's tongues in knots, and I hate it especially when it comes from those who look like they have something of value to say".

I blink. Is she insulting me? Praising me? Calling me names? Well, she told me to speak. Maybe she meant something else, but if she does, too bad for her. Resultion wells up in me, the sort of will that once made a gang of rascal youths turn and run when I caught them defacing the baker's walls.

"Only wanted to ask what your name is, really".

"Ariadne. No title I suppose, not after last night".

"Helena!", the Adept sitting beside you says excitededly without being prompted, the following torrent of words at odds with her previous silence, her mouth never tiring as she begins to recount her entire history from where she was born to the moment she sat down beside you and weren't you scared and do you think the Goddess is nicer than the shining lady Athar and-- you let the words wash over you, Ariadne seemingly just as taken aback, the diminutive girl still talking all the way to the admission counter.

You all three give the lady -- a curvy woman that somehow seems both motherly and severe at once -- your names and proceed to the examination area.

A third respect, a third custom, a third religious intolerance. Or maybe the custom and the intolerance blend together. You know... just because certain gods exist with highly tangible proof doesn't mean people don't covert to other (real or not) gods. The All-mother is goddess of a fairly ill-regarded cult despite being one of the oldest around and providing fairly important services of the plane. In part that might be exactly due to that. Few like this much power being beyond the reach of most authorities, and some of the practices they do are seen as opposed to civilization (such as squatting on land because of its holiness).

On the other hand, it's seen as a sign of respect and "letting the chosen go". Just because you don't like a deity doesn't mean you want to piss 'em off, and since your parents were traditionalists they happily did those rites.

Does that make sense?

My neat linen dress folded neatly -- I hate chaos -- I turn, squeaking a little while jumping away as the woman begins to poke and prod at the dark silhouette. The sensation is somewhat painful, the echo of her touch burning through my body like the shiver of a sudden plunge into a nearly frozen lake.

"All in order, child. It seems there should be no problem with your power. "Now", she gestures me to stand still as I move, taking a few more mundane and magical tests that leave me chilled and happy to get dressed once she's finished. I decide that I dislike her.

"Tell me your name, child".

> I am MARIA the NAMELESS, heir to no title, lady of nothing, beholden to no house

She scribbles on her pad but I'm already out the door, proceding to the next station. On the way there I'm so deep in thought that I can't react before the pristess from before tackles me and repeatedly stabs with her finger at the spot of my contract sign, though to little effect.

I sigh, trying to glare and probaly failing miserably.

"Save it. From a servant of the gods you would expect a little more m-m-ma-" Heavens, what was the word again? "acting like an adult", you finish.

She fumes, her feelings hurt, I turn my head just quickly enough to not get suckered in what no doubt must be the most hurt puppy eyes in the whole wide world.

"Come, they won't like any more waiting". That's it, take charge. Pa would be so proud.

You reach the hall just in time before the large wodden gates are shoved closed, the round stage in the middle the only notable thing in an otherwise completely boring room.

The lights dim (weird, you always expected a witch academy to use something other than gas lamps), and in the middle of the stage a black-clad figure begins to speak in a voice like ancient mountain waterfalls.

"Welcome, children. As you are now, you come to us like ore, rough and impure. When you leave, you shall be refined, pure and full of power. That much, I can promise you. How you get there, whether you climb on your own or we have to pull that, alone, is for you to decide. All of you will be ladies of the various houses, your former names and titles irrelevant among us, your new family. I ask all of you to never forget that, for the Goddess does not care for whatever standing you had. One last thing: Understand yourself as friends, as sisters, even, but never stop pushing each other to aim for higher grounds. Welcome to Mooncrest Academy, and my your efforts be blessed".

With that, she simply turns and leaves.

I guess that is a thing. Turning I find Helena and Ariadne wade through the mass towards me, already getting somewhat used to seeing them.

"We're aaaall gonna be in the same house, right?!"

I shrug, just letting them tag along for now.

"There are a limited number of spaces in each house", the woman at the counter tells you, showing you different symbols and explaining their meaning.

[X] House Antioch, the Seekers

Quickly circling the mark of House Antioch with the quil pen I take a deep breath. No turning back now. From behind you Helena approaches, snatches up a form and circles the same before handing it back.

"You too", she tells Eriadne, just as the latter is about to circle Nefesh. It seems impossible to shush her, so I instead pretend to be somewhere else and not near this emberassing little ball of words. Really, I wonder when they will teach us to fly...

"Hey". The cold voice startles me, my skin feeling prickly just form being near it somehow.

"We will share a room, for my peace of mind". She glares at Helena, but it has no bite.

Great, somehow I'm not sure her presence will be good for mine, but of course I don't say that. It's not her fault, surely not. We'll all just have to get used to each other.

As we make our way through the dimly-lit hallways of the school a figure in red and gold approaches one of the older witches, both of them entering heated debate of some sort.

Now, there are all kind of strange people walking around here, but this one is something out of the ordinary: A boy.

"Don't look at me", Eriadne says. I look at her and she sighs.

"They're just visiting. The Dragon Heart School's sometimes sends people here to work with us. Don't worry about them, they are almost all noble-blooded, and unlike us they don't give away their titles".

Hmm. Interesting. I know nobles had a "thing" with magic, but beyond that I never gave it much thought.

"It's easy. The blood of the Five dragons manifests randomly in men descending from one of their bloodlines".

I nod, dodging a sandstone pillar carved into the likeness of a vine-covered tree by just a hair.

"All these bloodlines are nobles, which means", she ends with a smile that barely touches her lips," any of these are far out of our league".

I shrug. Somehow I did not expect to find love here.

> "Are you sure about your house, Eriadne?

"Even when sure of nothing one should do something. Hesistation lose more wars than bad decisions do". That tone again, its icy correctness setting me on edge. On the other hand, I'm proud of myself. I recognize that quote that a famous general is said to have uttered on her deathbed.

"Francine Mollineux, right?" I smile, hopefully not too arrogantly, but the effect is quite impressive as she stop and, for the first time, seems to show a genuine smile.

"It seems I misjudged you… let's get along". She offers her hand, the smile gone like summer dew in the sun, only its memory lingering, and I take it briefly in mine.

[X] Just drop off everything and go for a grand tour

The moment lasts but an instant as Helena's short legs catch up with us, her wild descriptions of the journey down the mountain temple growing wilder by the second. I let it all wash over me, forgetting the words and simply focusing on her emotions that never once seem to leave room for doubt or regret.

With a boom that should by all rights have shook the door off its hinges the blonde bursts into the room we've been assigend to, throwing her small haversack into one corner and montioning us to do the same.

I quickly glance about. Wodden bunk beds. Simple matrasses. Candles instead of gas, not to think about electrowire or glowbulbs.

After some back and forth I convince Eriadne to let me handle the keys, and she relents with an exasperated shrugs as if she never cared in the first place and simply argued out of principle. Somehow I'm more amused than angry and the three of us begin our exploration.

"I hope there's a library somewhere here" Eriadne says, which earns her an incredulous stare from you both. Talk about strange priorities.

That won't do. Sisters or not, witches or not, I'll not allow myself to fall behind the moment I'm out of home. With what I hope is strong resolution I make the other two sit down on a marble step -- Eriadne of course making extra sure to wipe the spot clean first -- and take out the map.

It seems the school has five dedicated to different subjects. We decide on the nearest one.

"And as I said, the whole room is full of flame, but Adept Selyn juuuust walked right through them while on fire. We had to heal her for a week but she said it was worth it, have you ever seen a fire I heard the old dragons are still awake beneath some castle and I hope I don't set myself on fire when we learn Fire evokation an--" her unending sentence is squashed by a little choked squeak as a monster made entirely of flaming rock turns around the corner and heads towards us.
And that is where I'm afraid I must stop tonight, I'm already getting 2slow and it's getting late.

I hope at least some here could enjoy this.
