Ideas for gods.

Has anyone here made a god for their setting that they are proud of or stolen one from mythology that they felt fit really well?

pic randomly clicked and probably unrelated.
>>
Last time we had this discussion, people mentioned a god of atheism.

In one game where we were all gods, that's what I ended up playing.

In hindsight, not that happy with him. Should've spent less time raising holy atheist paladins and coffee shop temples, and more time convincing other gods they didn't exist.
>>
My secret shame is that every single god of my setting is a disguised touhou character
>>
>>33149567
Honestly, as a player I wouldn't care as long as it never becomes the focus of the game.

Hope you at least know who he is.

Discworld Death and one of his pet cats. Given the cat I'm going to guess this is after he got over the crippling depression.
>>
>>33149503
I once created a god of death/guardian of the dead who terrorized the party throughout the game only to have them end up being 'just-as-planned' by her the whole time at the end of the campaign because despite their character backgrounds (2 paladins, 1 healer, 1 tank/monk, 1 miracle caster) which they came up with, they became a bit attack happy and perception shy towards the end.

L-dimensional being, with a tendency for hoarding.

Now I have to know more, out of curiosity.

Did you make them all Goddesses, or are most of them male to hide it further? And which ones did you use?

Sounds like one of my games.

Only that they're not "gods" per se (the setting is post-apo, all irl religions apply), it's nine ladies (one per D&D alignment) who watch the game from a higher plane of existence, try to meddle in it for own profit (=ascendence even higher) and can form pacts with the PCs, one pact per lady.

So yeah, they're totally gods, the Lawful Evil one is even pic related.
>>
Yes, I've made many, many gods for my setting.

I can't share them for reasonable reasons.

Leftiticus, God of my left shoulder?
>>
Sithrak, the god that hates you.
No matter how good or bad you were in life, when you die, Sithrak tortures you for all eternity. So, live as long as you can! There's nothing you can do to anger Sithrak, he's already mad!
I think that's how the speech goes, oglaf.jpg

My setting doesn't have any gods, though it does have religions, and because of the way magic works in the setting, people can still receive divine favor when praying at an altar. There is one being who can be compared to a god, since he is actually a stupendously powerful mage from the universe before the current one, but he's long since been driven totally insane by time. Now he just drifts around in a pocket dimension powered by madness, like an eternal schizophrenic dreamworld, and it's powered by the souls of sentient beings.

Anything else in my setting with enough power to be considered a god is almost invariably evil. At best, they are totally unaware of the existence of life besides themselves. At worst, they believe sentient life itself is an abomination that will eventually result in the collapse of the cycle of creation and the end of eternity. They're right.

Of course, the PCs don't deal with any of this. Right now they're storming a castle. None of them are aware that in 100 million years one of these "gods" will awaken in roughly the exact spot upon which they're fighting.
>>
>>33150406

Righticus is a douchebag and hates women. Don't listen to him, he's going to steer you the wrong way.

Gonna implement her in my campaign somewhere down the line.

I like my disgusting waifufagging to be subtle and mysterious though. She'll only be known as a faceless spirit of the harvest and the only way the PCs will ever interact with her is by way of favors and boons.

Would probably also use the "GET IN THE BAG" Death from here for when athiests/unaligned with any particular diety people die.
>>
>>33149503
One of my favorites is god called Andromalius on the world the PCs are on. He is the god of Corruption and Hope and one of the only gods remaining who actually still walk the mortal world. Most of the others are in heaven letting the angels do all the work because they can't find a reason to care.

He spends his time running around everywhere granting wishes to those who want one in exchange for a sacrifice of equal measure no one knows why he does this. He also has a pretty thorough code of honor that doesn't let him directly tell you what to wish for and he tends to show immense respect for someone who can hit him once in a fight or outwit him. If you pull it off he tends to help you as much as he can without violating his code.

He is also ridiculously easy to summon because when he designed the spells to summon him he wanted to make it so even a middle schooler could summon him while messing around.

He refuses to let anything die alone and tends to show up for a moment if something is going to and comfort them. If they die he personally protects their souls from being harmed in the route to reincarnation.

He is also pretty much the definition for neutral evil and does all of this for a reason beyond being a nice guy. One that could end up ruining a lot of peoples day.
>>
I added a near omnipotent godlike being based on Scruffy the janitor into a setting for one of my groups fantasy games as a joke.

Wound up changing the whole mythology of the setting just to explain him. Now the pantheon of the gods is structured like a corporation with different departments instead of realms.

I've run a couple games in this setting, though I never tell my players it's the same world. I've run it in Pathfinder, CoC, and D20 Modern, and every game follows the same internal logic, even if they're separated by millenia or even universal cycles. It helps that I run with a small group that only does two or three sessions every few months, so I can keep a bit tighter reign on the overall narrative.

The plan is to end the saga using Exalted, as the players run through the final days of the final cycle of creation, and bring about the literal end of everything forever.
>>
Made a god of tits and wine. Like the Imp, just not impish and female. Once the gods got drunk on a divine barbecue and she made out with the goddess of thunder and war. After some while the goddess of family and fertility decided to join in.
A strike of lightning hit the earth and now the party is raising the baby (demi-?)god born from the three.
>>
Had players fight a god.
In this setting, there were periods of time between the beginning and end of universes. These were called cycles.
When a universe ended, there was usually something left over. A creature called the Millennial Worm ate the remains of the old universes to make way for new universes.
The "stomach" of the Millennial Worm was where most of the adventure took place.
It turned out the "god" they were working against was inside Millennial Worm, a remnant of a dead universe.
The first "cycle" was empty space with only the Millennial Worms floating through it.
They ate each other, reproduced, ate each other again, defecated.
Eventually, their waste became the first universe. They kept eating each other, producing waste, expanding this universe, slowly driving themselves extinct.
One particularly "large"/powerful Worm ate this universe, breaking a taboo of the Millennial Worms and growing incredibly powerful. This Worm became so powerful, he ate every other Worm before they could reproduce quickly enough.
Out of food, he ate the universe left over. Then he produced waste, and it made a universe, he let it expand ("ripen"), then ate this universe too The cycle went on and on.
It turned out the "god" they were trying to stop was the last of the Millennial Worms not yet digested within the Grand Millennial Worm's stomach.
This worm wanted to end this cycle of destruction, and so lead the player characters on a rampage through the Grand Millennial Worm, killing it, and releasing its stomach contents to germinate into a new, permanent universe.
He succeeded.

We had one old human cult in one of our games with some real world roots.

Elohim - LN
domains: Law, Justice, civilisation, fire

Joshua - LG
Domains: love, justice, law, good

Animus - LN
Domains: Law, arcana, nature, fire, life

Essentially, Elohim was the father of the pantheon and creator of the world, who pretty much defines everything by rules and laws.
Animus is the Avatar of the worlds natural laws, encompassing the web of natural laws that define everything around us, including magic.
Joshua was born after Elohim had a conversation (imagine an acid trip, but with more fire and eyes) with a devout but wavering female follower, and he realized that he did not understand his followers as well as he should. Since Joshua was born on earth as a demigod before ascending back to his pantheon, he understands humanity, and symbolizes their desire for justice and forgiveness. Nowadays, he is mostly the moral anchor of the pantheon, and all paladin orders associated with the religion follow him in particular.

>>33150907
Another one is Zarus the champion of the Gods. He used to be a normal human who eventually reached such a peak of skill the original gods uplifted him. So he could go and kick ass for them.

He was one of the first people to rebel due to his desire for a martial challenge. Though he isn't all that interesting by this point because he pretty much can only think about combat and nothing else at this point.

So most of the gods call him the guard dog for both guarding heaven and never playing games with them. On the other hand most are also terrified of him because he spent most of his entire history fighting. So by this point he is closer to an avatar of the concept of combat then the god of it.

He tends to be sent out when everything needs to die or someone is trying to invade the gods. He personally just wants a combat that can get his blood flowing like the first war of the gods and is starting to get irritated he can't find one without challenging the stronger gods over and over. Which is starting to worry many people due to how he takes that irritation out.

I made a seven god pantheon. All sacrificed and risen to divinity; all represented by different colored skeletons.

They're all a different incarnation of death and represent seven sins. They were, in life, members of a literal death cult that was sacrificed. Each suffered the sin they represent, and are those we learn from to do the opposite.

let's see what I can remember:

>name forgotten
was a pale shoggoth that ascended to godhood, became the deity of cities and knowledge.

>Methesda
portrayed as a female Minotaur, she was the goddess of war and fertility.

>vida muerte (god what was I thinking with that name)
depicted as either a zombie or undead gorilla, he was the god of undeath, he taught the necromatic arts to the first necromancers, created the first liches and was imprisoned by the other gods and their worshipers after trying to destroy all life and bring them back as the undead.

>never properly given a name
portrayed as an eternally burning skeleton he was the god of death and judgement, though would've been LN by DnD alignments.

there were a few others, but these were the ones where the most thought was put into them.

One of the Gods of the setting is Omega, the Divine Machine - essentially an ascended Warforged who filled the power vacuum of the previous, lost and unknown Deus Ex Machina, and often doles out kindly advice and, occasionally, artillery support to PCs.

The first campaign in the setting had him as a PC, with the story of his creation and ascendance.

The setting has many Gods, usually of specific things. My favourite is Gwyn, the God of Rain - whilst he casts his clouded limbs across the entire world, his "chosen people" and "little patch of heaven" is the setting's Wales parallel, Aberwash, and the folks that live there. His rain is soothing, healing and life-giving, and Aberwashians are frequently druids, actors, bards, miners, farmers, engineers or magic practitioners, which are also their chief industry exports.

But the most interesting could be the Abomination. The setting has two Overgods - Yahweh and Gaia. The largest religions are based around worshipping, in ascending order of size & magnitude - all gods; both gods; Gaia; Yahweh.

So when they had a child "the mortal way", it was generally agreed that, as a being with hereditary powers over everything their parents ruled over (between them, everything in the plane), it was an Abomination, and needed to be locked away.

Players find Andromeda, discover that they're a terrified, innocent child who knows nothing of the world due to isolation. What they do from there is going to be fascinating to watch.

The religion of most Orcs was a monotheistic religion, but they did not believe in a benevolent one. He was an evil creator who made the realms in order to torture all life when it died.

God of hard drives.

Well, my hard drive actually has a funny story behind it. My computer died and stopped being able to recognize internal hard drives. So, I got an external hard drive and copied the old hard drive onto it. My computer now boots off of the external.

I joked at the time that my computer was a lich now, and the hard drive its phylactery. I even changed the name of the computer from "Anon's Computer" to "Acererak."

So, now we have Acererak, God of....

Oh shit.

one of my favorite pantheons that I've made are for the dwarves of my fantasy setting:
The Great Stone Court (which ironically, has no gods named for stone) is still a work in progress, all I have is
>The Great Metal King
Standard Leader of the Gods stuff, also god of battle (specifically one-on-one duels) I'm wondering if I should rename him so he doesn't sound like he brought heavy metal music into the world too.
>The Great Jeweled Queen
Typical Queen matriarch of the gods, functions as a war goddess (focusing on strategy, logistics, and tactics)
>The Iron Knight
Brother of the Metal King, The Iron Knight is the full god of war and all its aspects.
>The Brass Prince
Dwarven god of technology and scholars, son of the metal king and jewel queen
>The Oak Princess
Married to the Brass prince, believed to actually be the daughter of one of the elven goddesses (elves canonically only acknowledge three goddesses existing, all of them virgins). Goddess of nature for the dwarves.

otherwise i'm still working things out.

How about Amaterasu? She is the main goddess of the japanese pantheon, and the most important because she is the sun goddess that brings life, but even she must hide and user subterfuge in order to survive: A caring, but very vulnerable, god.

Jiyva the shapeless
> Jiyva is the ancient deity of the slimes. Followers are expected to support the spread and satiation of their fellow slimes by allowing them to consume items, and are forbidden from harming any slimes. Jiyva will even occasionally consume items left elsewhere in the dungeon by followers. Especially favoured followers will become as shapeless as their god, as their attributes and mutations shift around under Jiyva's influence.

>Jiyva's followers can request jellies, turn monsters to slime, and eventually remove their harmful mutations. Followers of Jiyva may also pray alongside visible slimes, preventing items from being eaten for a while. As their piety grows, Jiyva will, with increasing frequency, drop jellies into the dungeon; rearrange followers' attributes based on their skills and armour; and grant mutation gifts. Slimes will never harm a follower of Jiyva, and Jiyva demands the same conduct in return.

I'm particularly fond of this guy. I use him in 4e to give characters the inherit bonuses when playing a low fantasy world.

I wrote a whole bunch of gods for my 3.5 homebrew. Will post some of the more unusal ones.

The son of Gruumish and Frenka, Murl is neutral. When Murl was born great things were expected of him. His farther hoped he would grow to become a great warrior while his mother wanted him to master the secrets of magic. Nurglewhiz attempted to seduce the young god and through him usurp his father as head of the orc pantheon. All three gods were disappointed, for the only thing Murl showed any interest in was his own appearance and affairs of the heart. Forgoing all the destinies others suggested to him Murl constantly preens and pampers himself, always trying to better himself and his followers. For their part his devotes strive to surpass even their god who looks on this with good grace. What use is ones own beauty if you are not to be surrounded by the beautiful yourself? The domains he is associated with are Competition, Envy (SC), Lust (SC), Pleasure (BoED), Pride (SC). Murl’s favoured weapon is an unarmed strike. Murl constantly pursues the affection of Tianamku, the elven goddess of beauty, much to her annoyance.

Orcs were the settings "default" race, becuase humans are boring.
>>
>In the beginning there were but eight divinities. Each sovereign ruled supreme over their domains but avarice grew in their hearts as they learned to covet the kingdom's of their brothers and sisters.

>The War in Heaven began, and through the conflict a new deity was born - Chaos.

In my setting the gods are unnamed. A blacksmith might pray to whichever god is in charge of creation and artistry but that role is held by whichever god is ascendant at the time. The eight gods continue to war to this very day over the various domains of power.

Knowledge of Chaos is almost unknown but it has a few worshipers. Those who follow the Nine-Fold Path believe that Chaos is responsible for protecting the realm of mortals from the worst excesses of the warring divinities by interfering in the plots of the gods. The most zealous worshipers of Chaos believe that the gods can be slain; and in doing so will restore a sense of peace to a setting that is riven by endless war.

Head of the goblin pantheon and paragon of the goblin work ethic Bizzlewick is lawful neutral. Always looking for a deal to make or new market to break Bizzlewick is never at rest. This has earnt him titles such as The Shyster, The Backhand, Bulging Pockets, and The Dealer. While Bizzlewick abides by rules and laws he views them as an interesting challenge, something to work with and around rather then be restrained by. The domains he is associated with are Commerce (EB), Greed (SC), Pact (CD), Trade (PGF), Trickery, and Wealth (SC). Bizzlewick’s favoured weapon is a bag full of money (treat as a sap). It is said Bizzlewick created the first example of small print.

Lostamin the thinking goddess is lawful neutral. Bizzlewick may be the chief of the goblin gods but Lostamin is understood to be the one keeping everything ticking over. The hardest working of deities nothing is done without Lostamin’s approval and she monitors every detail of the world. The strategist of the goblin pantheon, Lostamin is credited with the invention of numbers, the professions of law, accountancy, and banking, stock trading, and to be able to predict the future from studying all pass deeds. The domains she is associated with are Commerce (EB), Knowledge, Law, Oracle (CD), and Planning (Cwar). Lostamin’s favoured weapon is the sword. Lostamin is one of the few racial gods to have gained wider recognition in the world with virtually everyone working in the financial markets acknowledging her. She dose not yet except non-goblin clerics, but with many miracles benefiting members of other races having been attributed to her it may not be long before this changes.

I basicaly transplanyed WoW style goblins into the world. These two were intended to get that across.

There was another guy I built for another setting who pretty much achieved reverse enlightenment. Mordain was his name. He was a man who was the son of a very powerful god emperor. He pretty much went full Siddhārtha Gautama and gained enlightenment Only not all the way. Since he didn't achieve true enlightenment he couldn't see there was something there in the nothing that he saw and that things existed other then him.

Leading to him going full Solipsism and trying to force others to see what he did and spread what he learned to the world. Only if you're not divine that kind of kills you because you need to be able to understand you exist or have enough raw might to avoid it. Otherwise you get retconed out of existence.

Leading to the PCs last and worst foe. A god that teaches that nothing exists then proves it by making you not exist objectively and can do this just by talking and can do it to everything. Entire planes was erased due to him.

The self styled watchman of the gods, Nab-Bazzer is lawful good. When a deal is made, a law broken, or justice needs upholding Nab-Bazzer is there to enforce the law. A loud, bombastic god Nab-Bazzer is often considered a self-important nuisance by other deities, though all are quick to turn to him when they feel they have been wronged. The domains he is associated with are Inquisition (CD), Law, Retribution (FR), Strength, and Truth (RoE). Nab-Bazzer’s favoured weapon is the club. There is a widespread rumour that Nab-Bazzer constantly pursues Nix for her crimes. However secretly loving the evil goddess when he catches her he is unable to carry out his duty and allows her to escape. Nab-Bazzer’s followers vehemently deny this claiming he has never caught Nix but when he dose she will be punished fully.

Nilly the goblin goddess who loves all animals is chaotic good. She especially watches over domesticated animals and those who care for them. It is said Nilly first taught goblins the arts of cavalry and how to hunt with animals as their companions. At all times Nilly is surrounded by animals of all different varieties. The domains she is associated with are Animal, Nobility (Cwar), Travel and Wrath (BoED). Nilly’s favoured weapon is a claw (or sickle). Usually a kind, gentle goddess Nilly’s wrath is reserved for anyone that would harm or mistreat animals, in this case her rage is blind to all reason.

I wanted five gods per race. Couldn't think what to do for a fifth goblin god. Had the idea of an animal rights advocacy goddess from noticing the goblin racial bonus to ride checks.

Every farmer knows and lives by the tales of Farmer Brown, father of the fields and tamer of the beasts. Some tales depict him as a chosen one of Nature, who passes wisdom down upon him so that he may in turn pass it on to others. Others are cautionary tales that depict Nature as a cruel and angry spirit who Farmer Brown outwits and tames.

Since the dawn of time man has worshiped the sun, but its disciples have been numerous and varied, and for every group of benevolent pacifists there have been scores of heretic-burning purists and heart-eating warlords. Zenith changed all of that, with olive branch in one hand and flaming sword in the other this warrior and philosopher traveled the world bringing his lost brethren into the New Dawn. Tales of his kindness and wisdom are as well known as his brutal and bloody campaigns against those who dared to call him enemy.

The obsessive elf god Melia Khan is lawful evil. God of magic he has a narrow focus on its advancement, cataloguing, and continual assessment, even resenting magics use to some extent. Melia Khan almost exclusively extends his patronage to wizards viewing them as the only casters to treat magic with the respect it is due. Melia Khan’s clerics treat the spells their god bestows on them just as a wizard organizes his own. The domains he is associated with are Knowledge, Law, Madness (CD), Magic, Rune (PGF) and Spell (PGF). Melia Khan’s favoured weapon is the scimitar. Fond of working with other gods in the study of magic Melia Khan has found collaborations with Wee Jas and the orc goddess Frenka particularly successful.

A slightly diffrent tske on s "god of magic". I wanted to try and have a vaguely even blend of good and evil gods in all of the races pantheons. I also wanted the evil gods to be justifyable as everyday objects of worship.

The plot behind this dynamic is that whereas once the God's were self-sustaining, now something is draining their vitality. Increasingly desperate the God's lean upon mortal worship for sustenance - engaging each other in vicious wars for ownership of the various dominions to claim more worshipers.

Unknown to the God's is the fact that Chaos, born of their strife, is the leeching influence. It works constantly to shield the realms of man from divine warfare as well as to keep it's sibling in constant conflict so that no one god may gain enough strength to challenge it.

The gods war over dominions as petty as "God of Good Rock Skipping Rocks" or "God of Feeling Satisfied After A Hearty Meal" because every scrap of worship is needed to sustain themselves.

Goddess of humans Lady Francessca is chaotic neutral. Her titles include Lady Liberty, She Who Defends Freedom, the Dear Mother, and She Who Protects The Downtrodden. When the chief goblin and orc gods, Bizzlewick and Gruumsh, agreed the pact that their two respective races would forever be allied Lady Francessca appeared to defend the goblin dissenters. After much argument Lady Francessca led the goblins that rejected the unification of the green races away. Her new followers embraced their new goddess whole-heartedly. To show the eternal bond now between them Lady Francessca transformed the goblins into a form she found more pleasing. So humanity was born. Lady Francessca teaches personnel freedom is to be held above all else. In turn she holds reliance on anyone but ones self is a terrible sin. It is up to each individual to forge their own path by their own means. While agreeing it is imperative responsibly and arrangements be met Lady Francessca is opposed to anyone who holds control over another. The domains she is associated with are Chaos, Courage (CW), Liberation (CD), Pride (SC), and Retribution (FR). Lady Francessca’s favoured weapon is the sword. Lady Francessca is the sister of the death goddess Wee Jas.

Always annoys me when every other race has gods and humans just get lumbered with the generic ones. Espicialy as this has the effect of making the general gods of a setting feel like the human gods.

Where Lady Francessca stands for personnel and social liberty Voltoire represents letting go of all control. He is the pinnacle of doing whatever one wants whenever one wants. The domains he is associated with are Chaos, Feast (EB), Gluttony (SC), Lust (SC), Madness (CD), Passion (EB), Pleasure (BoED), and Suffering* (PGF). Voltoire’s favoured weapon is any improvised weapon. Of all the racial gods Voltoire has found the most appeal amongst others. Wherever vast amounts of alcohol are being consumed and pleasures indulged his name can often be heard being invoked.

*The Suffering Domain is used to represent an Alcohol Domain. Rather then inflicting suffering on others clerics of Voltoire using this domain inflicts drunkenness.

The cowardly god Fenwick is chaotic evil. Fenwick is a nasty, vindictive little god. Craven and feeble Fenwick will never engage in a fair fight, or even one that only favours him a little. Fenwick’s truest joys are petty theft and kicking others when they are down though he spends most of his time running away. When seen at all it is as a hastily retreating back. The domains he is associated with are Celerity (CD), Destruction, Envy (SC), Evil, Hatred (PGF), Travel, and Trickery. Fenwick’s favoured weapon is any ranged weapon due to the desire for distance between himself and his enemies.

The God of Awe
While not particularly more or less powerful than the average god, they're certainly much more bombastic and terrifying. While an undead god, has no qualms with followers turning undead to make them explode, not to mention take command and empower the undead if they so choose. The faith's creed is generally "Stop the show, I want off"

The twisted god Propaganda is neutral evil. He is a god of sick fantasy and warped vision. Formerly the god Keller’lean he promoted the betterment of humanity through noble cause and endeavour. After a bitter argument with a rival god Keller’lean was obliterated. For many long yeas the dead gods spirit drifted on the winds desperate to regain corporeal form. In this state Keller’lean discovered an unexpected source of strength, the diseases that plague mankind. Taking this new form Keller’lean latched onto his nemesis, as a tumour he grew until eventually the reborn god Propaganda burst fourth from the death-throes of his former slayer. Propaganda bought a new manifesto of forced changed and adaptation, of violent conflict and culling of the weak, all bought about by that agent that had allowed his re-birth. Some worshippers try to focus on Propaganda’s aspect of change for the better. As they further the cause the god tolerates such moderation but such followers are constantly tempted and goaded into committing acts of depravity and evil. The domains he is associated with are Evil, Hatred (PFG), Madness (CD), Pestilence (CD), Slime (PGF), and Transformation (RoE). Propaganda’s favoured weapon is a trident. Bizarrely where Propaganda loathes all the other gods he misguidedly believes the rest of the human pantheon to be his dearest friends.

All I've really got, the rest were more generic.

Yeah, the setting we used to play started when I created the gods. They were basically gods of elements, but I used chinese elements instead of western ones because fuck air, I got wood and metal. Despite being that, just elemental gods, they also represented other ideas and had personality a la greek gods and they had wars and shit, but I'm not gonna explain it all now. Suming up the wood one was an elf/drow queen, the earth god was an indian chief, the fire god a mad scientist, the water godess a virgin slut and the metal one was basically the emperor of mankind except because I knew nothing about 40k when I created him.
>>
Pantheon for Wood Elves was pretty much average pantheon with Native American totem poles.

Trinity of gods for High Elves, they believe their god made them in his image; All other races are inferior deviations there in.

Pretty much incalculable number of gods for the Dark Elves, it was a very disorganized church.
>>
My Pantheon consists of three gods:
One of order and justice and stuff like that. Very similar to Abrahams god. Grants a lot of magic due to being committed to his followers.

His opposite is one of ambition and individual power. Literally exists as a tangible person in the real world and is very powerful as an individual. Don't really grant power but teaches you ways to consume souls for power.

Lately is one of freedom, is the weakest of the three. But the followers get some power boosts compared to atheism. And this one of course allows quite a lot of behaviors.

Then wizards has an atheist kind of approach to magic but it's hard as fuck to learn.

I'm running an old school hex/dungeon crawl, and the gods are mile tall giants with ridiculous powers. They came from the Outside at the beginning of time and sealed/defeated the Lovecraftian demons who inhabited the world. In the early ages, there were no stars or sun or moon, only the physical bodies of the gods which shone light for miles. Almost 600 years ago, the mythic age ended, and the gods left the world, climbing up to live in the sky or under the earth or deep in the ocean. Yes the world is a flat disk with a dome on top of it, what else would it be?

The High Elves believe they are descended from their gods TES-style, and have Five Primary Deities, humans have Eight deities [one of which is ANGRY ABOUT ELVES], monster races worship demons, and halflings only have one god who they don't worship. His name is Bother and he usually just wanders around helping random halflings. Dwarves have two gods, Bronze and Steel, basically the ultimate bros. They fight, drink, build, and dig.

Wood Elves 'worship' their ancestors and venerate a vaguely sentient force of nature, but for the most part are atheist in a Buddhist-style sense of "Yeah theres gods, but who gives a shit? They won't help me reach Enlightenment."
>>
>>33152573
basically.

i wrote him as the Cosmic Janitor. he repairs shit for the gods and cleans up the place when they need it. for instance, the god of the sea is far too busy trying to think up new sea monsters to harass fisherman and whatnot to bothered with minor problems like the sea turning purple or rivers running backwards. so he calls maintenance and the cosmic janitor thanklessly cleans up the mess or fixes the plumbing.

all this started when the PC's asked a god why he doesn't fix his own problems. "We normally have a guy for that but he's on his break so i'm counting on you" was what i came up with.

I basically stole the mythology from the Sandman series. With athropormorphizations of concepts existing above a shitload of gods and spirits and demons and shit.

The Morrigan, Lady of Crows.

To this day the players were never sure if she was really a goddess or not.

Her likeness was not found in the pantheon temples of any nation just as they were not in hers. Her followers were many but never concentrated in any one nation and seemingly never amongst the rich or politically powerful.

The shrines of The Morrigan were always in out of the way places. The gods themselves hated The Morrigan with a passion. Sadly they could never do anything about her because they weren't sure what she was. She was a minor deity at best and many of the greater gods should have been able to crush her with ease. Either it would kill her if she wasn't really a goddess or she would be banished to her realm for a very long time. The last god to try this had been Saakramar the stalker(Praised by hunters and father of were-wolves and vampires). The Morrigan had escaped whilst Saakramar was distracted by a kick to the groin and having his ribs broken. She could punch way above what she should have been able to.

Her followers got not blessings from her but she also made few requests of her followers. She had no clerics but many sorcerers.

She was a sort of odd-job deity with a reasonably nice heaven. Just as much a goddess of births and fertility and harvests as she was bloodshed and strife and burning hate. In terms of personality she was a bit of a cold hearted bitch.

This was obviously based of off Celtic mythology that my players didn't know shit about at the time. This was many years before Dragon Age came out.

Yes... in all my years DM'ing, my best idea for a campaign I tell you now.

I started by showing my players the map of the world, one I drew by hand (map fetish here) but any you like that are online are fine. Magic is a tidal force on the world, affected by the proximity of celestial bodies, but generally it waxes and wanes slowly across the world east to west with a period of eight years. The end of a cycle is marked by a complete lack of magic for 4 months, and in the fourth year - at the height of magical potency - is the only time that sorcerers can be conceived. Now as for the gods...
I made some outlines about what there would be gods /of/, but gave them no names. I told my group that there is one sun, one moon around the world, and six planets that are plainly distinguishable by color to the naked eye. The planets are interpreted alternately as physical bodies of the gods themselves, the homes of the gods, or portals to realms beyond, where the gods truly are.

The key that made the campaign memorable was that I allowed the players to name the gods before the first game. We collectively came up with, and agreed upon names for the gods of the planets, sun and moon gods. (The moon god/ess is patron of all moons, including those that surround other planets.) The only god I named independently as DM was Crisis, the god of falling stars, disaster, misfortune, madness, half-assing and oath-breaking. None of them saw it coming a year later when they had grown into mighty heroes when the BBEG - Crisis itself revealed to them that they were each in fact true gods who existed with forms outside of this world and could not be destroyed by anyone but Crisis, another true god. Crisis spoke: (cont.)
>>
"Do you not remember? Though it may seem that many years have passed, it was not long ago that we agreed to share a dream - a wonderful dream where you could put on a new face and seek challenge and conquest in a playground of my design. We spoke of a new, magical world and we gave names to the gods! Who among you remembers who you truly are? Name thyself and ascend to the First World! Only then may you challenge me."

Already, the most quick-witted and genre-savvy player was smiling with his eyes wide and mouth gaping open. He, the paladin, stood up from the couch and said "I awake, for I am Chad, (real name) and I challenge thee, you magnificent bastard!" From there the other players caught on quickly, one of whom was completely mind-blown and fighting back hysterical laughter. I asked "Do you challenge me?!" to them, and the rest said "I challenge you!" or similar. I yelled out, "NAME ME" and they called in unison "JASON." I grabbed and started to throw all the pillows in the game room at everyone, keeping the heavy one for myself and ran out the sliding door of our game room onto the lawn, where I was eventually gang-beaten with pillows into submission.
"I yield!" I shouted several times before they figured I'd had enough. Finally, I said "You've done it; you defeated Crisis and risen to godhood truer than any you as mere characters had ever known. Worlds, creatures and the realms beyond are in the full purview of your imagination, and whatever fates you design shall befall the peoples of Teharga (the world). *Ba-buuuuuum!* *singing with jazz hands.
Drinks and nostalgia over the past year followed.

I actually have a hierarchy of Gods in my setting

>The Ones Above- The top of the godly beings, they are the creators of all, even the other gods. They have no form that can be witnessed by mortals, and it's not even known if there are more than one, or if all of them are a single one

>The Architects- The ones who shaped the world as it's known, they cannot be witnessed by mortals or interact with them unless they construct a Small God to represent them

>The Ones Who Watch- The gods in charge of keeping the universe running. They cannot create, but they can move the unseen forces that exist everywhere. They are one of the two Small Gods, which are the gods capable of interacting with mortals

>Ideal Gods- The gods as mortals commonly know them, the ones that represent concepts and ideas, the ones who are worshipped and have shrines and temples built to them. In actuality they are the weakest and lowest of the heavenly beings.

Theres also a religion that worships The One On High, they believe all the different gods are actually a single one that takes many forms.

My setting borrows from Conan and The Redemption of Athalas.

There are 4 gods each of whom consider themselves to be "god" and see the others as the "brother of god" or "sister of god".

The first is a builder who creates things ie: the world, the sky, the universe in general.

The second is the goddess of sustaining and fertility, she ensures that things that are alive continue to live, etc.

The third is the destroyer who (when the time comes) destroys everything living and dead

The fourth is the watcher, he doesn't interfere with the world and generally just sits on his mountain throne watching how shit sorts itself out.

Humans being the only race are unique for they were created by the builder as a present for the goddess and empowered by the watcher (he conferred a portion of his power to the first men in the forms of souls).

The destroyer created the "underworld" for her favourite children so that after he claimed them they could continue on.

Unfortunately most religions in the setting don't have this knowledge and worship at best the builder and the mother, whilst fearing the destroyer. Only one culture reveres the watcher - likely because he is the only one who doesn't interact with the population through miricles.

>having a window on your left

Then the souls that the Watcher gave to mankind are similar to MTG sparks, in that sufficiently willful people who undergo a trauma and survive/thrive in it can be "awakened" granting various abilities generally unaging bodies and enhancement of their primary characteristics (someone known for tier ability to sneak might gain the ability to turn invisible, while a charismatic person gains near mind control)

Because fuck, what other animal JUMPS RIGHT THE FUCK PAST BEARS LIKE IT AIN'T NO THANG just so it can fuck once and then die.

I don't even remember which setting I made them for, but I had two to four gods I was really proud of thinking of. And are open to steal for some pantheon, by all means.

So, one was a lawful god that wasn't completely stiff and about absolute goodness as an ideal. He's the god of just rewards and well deserved glory. Basically, the god of actually getting paid in full at the end of a quest, and having a beer with bros. That one was mostly to allow a more relaxed kind of paladins I think. Lawful good, but still knight errants that knew how to have a good time.

The other god was a chaotic good god of intelligence. The espionnage kind of intelligence. Think James Bond, but godlike.

So, he started going on a divine mission to fuck over evil from the inside, by pretending to be the god of deceit and treachery. A large sprawling sith-like influence destined to have anybody bent on evil basically murder each other in an attempt to grasp hollow favors.

However, he became too good at his job, and eventually the false got became true. And had pretty much the same idea. Enter the neutral good god of sacrifice and martyrdom, a sort of Illmater on crack, here as well, destined to have good-intentionned fellows sacrifice themselves for some hollow good reasons.
>>
>Claofulo: Minor god of cabbage and sallads.
>>
>>33149503

In my current homebrew, the main gods are literally the Wu-Tang clan.

Needless to say they ain't nothing to fuck with.
>>
Less of a god, more of an entire religion, but I had a culture of humans in one of my games that were big into astrology worship. Basically, their belief was that the soul was separate from the body, and that when the pyhsical form dies, the soul continues to inhabit the earth, sometimes for good, sometimes for evil, depending on what kind of person they were in life. The moon has a chain around each human soul and is trying to pull the souls toward itself so that it may claim them, the stars being the mortal souls that the moon has already claimed. The sun moves opposite the moon (these humans believed in a geocentric universe) with another chain around human souls, though the sun only tries to counter the moon and keep the souls on earth. The moon moves in order to try and gain a better position and snag a couple souls before the sun can respond, and the sun always moves to counter the moon so that the two are always pulling in opposite directions. The bodies of good men are interred in the earth or buried at sea in hopes that their souls will continue to wander the earth if their remains are placed within the earth. The bodies of the damned are burned so that their ashes will float up to the sky such that the moon may claim their soul. The sun is worshipped as a protector of man, but the moon is also worshipped in order to appease it and also in gratitude for taking the souls of the wicked from the earth.

The main reason the people believe the moon takes souls is beacuse the night in the region they live in is particularly harsh and many dangerous monsters come out in the night. The people believe that the moon is the master of all of these monsters, and has, in a sense, become a monster in the eyes of the people. The moon steals souls because it is a monster and that is what monsters do, essentially. I suppose "religion" is not the best term to use because the goal is not really to enforce a morality. It's more like a mythology, something to explain the purpose of the moon, stars, and sun and a tool to teach children to be weary of the moon (and therefore the night) and things like that. The people greatly valued community and togetherness. As an unrelated note, shooting stars were seen as particularly bad omens.

I actually rather like the pantheon I've created for my default setting. It borrows from multiple sources, most notably Discworld and Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim. There's also some of my own stuff worked in from gods I'd created for one story or another.

The short version is that there are two overdeities, Lord Fate and the Lady, god of order and goddess of chaos, respectively. The two used to fight ceaselessly to control the universe until they realized that a) nothing was ever gonna get done if they did and b) either one of them winning would actually be a bad thing.

So they deliberately lowered themselves down to "merely" greater deity status and created the whole of everything, basically to pass the time. This includes the other major, original gods - Sol, Nualla, Orthos, Dasos, and Taya.

Other gods have been created here an there in various ways. Some of them are ascended mortals, like Anatea and Scrylia, while others were born divine, like Luna & Aura.

Every 1000 years, the gods basically play a giant game of chess/poker/WarCraft, where they gamble their divine ranks against each other. The rule enforced by Lord Fate and the Lady is that no deity can have more than 19 divine ranks. If you win more than that, you have to give them up, by either handing them out to other gods to gain favor with them, or by elevating non-deities for whatever reason (to gain new allies, as a reward for services rendered, for shits & giggles, whatever).

It's hopelessly derivative, but I still enjoyed putting it together.

Well there's this one I thought up called Azjmav (not sure how much I like the name). Essentially Azjmav, for all his perfections, is an immense narcissist, and soon realizes his greatness can only be compared to the nothingness of the void.

So then he creates the Aerusheim (another working name), who're essentially angels, all bright and beautiful, to serve as a testament to how great he is. But then he realizes nobody will be able to praise him for doing this. Sure the Aerusheim would tell him of their gratefulness for the life bestowed on them, but they were humble, and that unsettled him.

So Azjmav decides to create mortal life. These beings would be created with the intent that they would look at themselves, look at Azjmav and the Aerusheim, and praise in despair as they lamented their own hideousness. So from a beautiful and perfect god of creation would come the Orcs.

Later on, a rebellion of the Aerusheim against Azjmav's cruelty would occur, and one of them would go on to try and create mortal life of their own, but these [Elves] would turn out to be tainted in some respect by Azjmav's vanity, and that causes a few problems down the line...

The gods in my world is generally based on Pagan and Hindu cosmology, where the gods exist within the framework of a cosmic law (dharma/maat). While it definitely exists gods. The question is: do the gods people worship actually exists as they imagine them and which, if any, of the cosmologies that exist are right?

Currently there exists only one (or two depending on perspective) coherent religions, otherwise there world is made up of regional beliefs and state-cults like Confucianism.

This organized faith is Uhrianism, based on the teachings of a transcendent warrior-buddha: Uhr.The faith is divided between the West and East, since Uhr apparently taught two very different things on each side of the Living Mountains, written down in two sets of text of unsure age. Western Uhrianism has been incorporated under the state-religion of Cammoria, and is similar to Theravada. The main difference is that rather than abhorring violence, they are taught "detached violence". Karma only matters if you let it get to you. Currently in conflict with sufist laity cults, which are cutting in on their authority.

The East on the other hand is Neoplatonism meets Islam. Here Uhr (through a disciple admittedly) explains the Godhead, the Aeons, the corruption of the world leading to Maya and the Sharia (which is admittedly closer to Plato's Republic). Unlike Western Uhrianism the Eastern branch have organized faith similar Christian Orthodoxy.

Well, I based all my setting's pantheon in the Tarot cards.

There was a clear hierarchy based of the numbers of the tarot, but the Fool was the 'father of gods' and was a teenage girl who liked to party and was all about chance and randomness (not Chaotic Retard randomness).

Also I ripped off the grim reaper, making him an skeletical cowboy with a shovel, having to dig through graves to get the souls of the dead.

A divine hound that showed up in the pantheon one day. The hound is not related to any of the other gods, and not even the rest of the pantheon knows how it got there. The hound represents strength and glory, while being the patron god of the hunt. The breed of the hound changes based on perception, so it may show up as a rodent hound to one person and a retriever to another. The popular breed is somewhere between wolf, doberman, and pitbull.

Ylmeenath; the God of jealousy, greed and eternal hunger.

Ylmeenath was a petty god of no real importance until, at least until the first sentient desired what his neighbor had. From there he only grew in power. He became strong enough to begin devouring other gods.

He takes the form of a giant humanoid with slick black skin that shines like the void. His chest is a gaping, ragged hole, exposing his empty abdominal cavity, all the way to his spine. His ribs protruded like fangs from his skin. His head is a pristine white mask, like the finest porcelain, broken only by his 6 eyes. They glow a dull red, until his hunger is awakened, when they begin to glow a sickly green. The back oh his head is a mass of ropey red tentacles which stretch to the floor, and move about his head. They constantly reach and grasp for those to consume. His arms end just below the shoulders, instead appearing as burnt cinders, constantly billowing smoke.

His servants are the simulacran, slim, silver skinned beings that constantly seek to steal the forms of others.

My setting doesn't really have gods. The main religion of the continent is derived from the teachings of an ancient mage who got a good look at the inner workings of the cosmos and wrote a treatise on it. It's the truth of the place, but hundreds of years later, a Vatican-like organization has grown around it spreading its truth, and the common folk view it as just another religion, so there exist misguided sects of it and competing beliefs.

The closest thing to gods it has are maybe the personification of the two planes, and mythic characters representing nations, which is really just history being made into fables. Oh, and the Pratchett-Auditor-esque Ravens who monitor reality.

In my setting, most of the gods are/where alive and usually very powerful beings, but, since no one in the setting is sure what happens when a being dies, none of the gods can prove that they built an afterlife. There are many of them, some familiar and some flat-out odd.
The one I am most proud of, though, is the one commonly referred to as "The Book". The religion revolves around it's followers, which are surprisingly numerous, attempting to follow a set of millions of usually highly specific rules, which are contained within a holy tome referred to also as "The Book". The god(ess?) has a name, but the rules for when you can and cannot say it are so confusing that people just stopped using it to be safe, and it has been forgotten. The punishment for breaking different rules varies, from a stern talking-to to being thrown into the fifth circle of Hell. The faith' leadership is constantly changing, as anyone caught breaking a rule cannot hold office and, since no one can remember all of them, people call eachother out all the time. In fact, a favorite passtime is looking through The Book for things to accuse your enemies of. I would post the rules, but they are contained only on a sickeningly long word document. I'm constantly expanding it, and do so with very little discrimination. For instance, if a player rolls a twenty in game, they mat add a rule(provided it isn't too general). Any suggestions for rules? Been meaning to add some this week.

In my current story that I'm attempting to write up, the gods of the world were beings formed of nothing inside the void. They could create sound and dazzling lights by temporarily giving up pieces of their essence. One of the gods had a strong urge to create (see: dorf fortress strange moods) and creates a world that seems to last forever(?). The other gods decide to enter it and find out it has strange new laws like gravity and physical material and they create their own races and animals.
Eventually some of the gods have a falling out when they find out they can die forever in this world. Some leave it, some stay to protect their beloved creations, and others exist outside barred from the world but seek to destroy it by sending new creations (abominations) in.

Hmn... I can spin that as Kaimen, Lawful Good God of Beauty and Personal Upkeep. Other titles include, Shepard of Purity, Cleanser of the Body.

His domains are, Exorcism (ECS), Healing, Purification (SC), Renewal (SC); and his symbol is a simple hairbrush.

While a minor deity, Kaimen's worship promotes his followers to take care of themselves, using simple rituals to promote purity and cleanliness for the body and, by extension, the mind and soul. Chapels to Kaimen are often small shrines, with offerings of oils and varying beauty based products or bases, such as wax and perfumes. These shrines, however, are often tended by a follower who is able to dispense some healing and aid to those who need it; and as such, the followers of Kaimen tend to lean towards good..

How'd I do, /tg/?

Echous, Goddess of Prayer and Response. It's always one thing for someone's prayers to be answered in a time of need, or for a paladin to herald their respective god or goddess in order to smite in their name. But more often than not these are extreme situations of do or die. Rarely will a god of any pantheon interfere with mortal bidding, but this does not reflect upon Echous and her followers. For every prayer, there is reaction. For every question, there is divine guidance. For every hardship, there is an echoing voice guiding along the blessed path for those who walk in Echous' footsteps.
>The catch is only those who are deaf can properly worship Echous; all practices involve an absolute void of inner sound or sound perception. Echous is the only voice you need

I made a set of four elemental Gods once. The noble god of fire, who drives out the darkness and brings civilization. The nurturing goddess of earth, whose bounties feed the world and grant wealth. The capricious god of air, who sends storms and fog to harass the innocent and hide the guilty. The pitiless goddess of water, who hungers to consume all who sail across her.

The fun part, though, was that the plot involved a planet orbiting around the same star at a closer orbit invading theirs. Their world was a scorching desert bereft of natural resources, so they were desperate for the rich and watery world of the players. A lot of the decision to invade instead of take unclaimed territory came from the fact that they had the same elemental Gods, but completely different aspects. The god of fire was brutal and cruel, and sent his wrath to torment them. The goddess of earth was hateful and greedy, happily devouring anyone who wandered her. The god of wind was kind and merciful, sending cold breezes to alleviate suffering. Finally, the goddess of water was loving and nurturing, giving any of her blessings not immediately devoured by her gluttonous sister to the needy. Naturally, they see their sister world's population as evil, and claiming their world the same way one would see driving demons out of heaven and back into hell.

I'm so glad people have enjoyed my story. For your interest, these are the gods as my players named them.
Note that the reason each of them has an associated swamp animal is because of a culture that exists to the south-east. The culture who applies a gemstone to each deity is in the north-east, and where those two cultures meet you might find a swamp animal statuette adorned with that gemstone. The deity Crisis does not have a planet associated with it, but any irregular celestial event could potentially be associated with Crisis.

Yonda the Sun: (As male in the mid-north) Fire, Time, Sun and stars, natural cycle of life and death, glasswork, reading/writing.
(As female in the north-east) Conception, childbirth, funerals, inspiration, history, gatekeeping, daytime, justice.
(As male in the south-west) Rulership, vengeance, lawyers, sex and courtship, property, candles, sight, "as long as you live under my sky, you follow my rules!"
(As female in the south-east) Warmth, welcome, cleanliness, eggs, seeds, culture, life, friendship, sunshine, colour.

Kybenth the Moon (or Arenth and Kybra): (As female in the mid-north) Moons, Tides, hunting, Farming, woodwork, stonemasonry, logic, sacred geometry.
(As male “Arenth” in the north-east) Shelter-building, family gatherings, thoughtfulness, arguments, persuasion, night time, obsidian, jet stone.
(As male in the south-west) Water, breath, weather, animals, plants, soil, oratory/spoken word, he appears as a wise Wildman with long teeth.
(As female “Kybra” in the south-east) Darkness, rainstorms, archery, rot, health, healing, disease, crustaceans.

What's the backstory on these guys?
>>
>>33186676
Just a rough idea atm. The location is a fantasy equivalent of the Great Lakes region in North America and the period is nearly identical to the French and Indian War. The raccoon people, called Nooks by others, have trade relations with the merpeople living in the lakes and rivers and also with the colonial humans. They're pretty neutral and are happy to deal with both factions, not really helping or hindering either one. They're only real commitment is to never reveal the locations of the lakes that the merfolk live in, controlling and protecting the land that surrounds them.
The Nooks and the Merfolk share a common myth of the Glade of Lost Souls, a place on earth for those who don't receive a proper burrial.

The merfolk worship a moon goddess depicted as a midnight black mermaid wearing white bone armor.

The nine gods were once inhabitants of other realms, where Law or Good or Chaos existed as the only major forces. They had a very strange, often frowned upon network, the core of which was a strange relationship between the (later called) NG Lady of Luck and the dangerous NE Misfortune.

In their attempt to create an easily accessible pocket realm for them to meet, they inadvertently created a festering wound which destroyed them whole and became the Material Realm, where all things clash. They also created a vast amount of damage in the outer realms, permanently scarring them.

Afterwards, they found themselves still living and slowly pulled themselves back together. Their very thoughts changed the nature of reality, but they couldn't create bodies again and live as they did before, literally imprisoned by the reality they made. They set out attempting to deal with things as best as possible.
>>

I was working on a setting I scrapped where all the gods were married couples based on duality
Birth/Death
Chaos/Law
Commerce/War

I had a whole list but I've switched computers since

One big part of the idea is that the god of Chaos was in charge of Dragons and the sun and had been driven insane so his wife spent half her time enforcing ethics on humans and the other half taking care of her insane husband
>>
>>33199145

What made I'm really proud of is the relationships between the Gods, though.

There's of course the strange, flirtatious relationship between the luck gods who seem to enjoy one upping each other.

Then there's the LG god, Monarch, who had to hammer out every single law with the LN god Gannus (who only just recently got followers in the form of a race of constructs) and the LE Belzoth, who styles himself as the Interrex and is now just waiting for a chance to take over at the earliest opportunity but only really differs in the wish to legalise slavery and send children to workhouses.

Then there's the CN god simply called the Crow, who the Orcs worship. They claim that the Crow stole creation from every other god (Tricking Misfortune and Lady Luck to play dice, getting Monarch and Belzoth to argue ideology so they could finally make laws) and only have three directions in its honour. The Beak, or Glory, is directly in front of you. And the Wings are to your side. They now currently hold the largest empire in the world since ancient times (probably because of him.)

God of Warfare. Not the act of war; reveling in bloodshed is a barbaric symptom and no true god will descend that far. The God of Warfare is all about the art of war, how to become stronger than your enemies either through training, knowledge, or sheer brute force. Invented the billhook, and bestowed it upon a pilgrim. Is also the God of Hunting via association.

Goddess of Truth. Justice be damned, let mortal men settle mortal trials, but let the true scourge be known. Let the true heroes bask int he glory they deserve. If conspiracy controls a nation, the liars shall know her divine fury. Has sent angels down to topple nefarious nations in recent history.

Goddess of Trust. Was killed by a man, who once was closest to the Gods, who now is regarded as evil incarnate. By association, the Goddess of Love.

In my setting, there is only one true god with a omnipotent case of split personality disorder. It was sealed in another dimension long ago to protect creation from it's constant warring with itself, but when mortals believe in a concept enough, a "Personality" breaks through and begins forming a "Cult" around itself to perpetuate it's power. Eventually, they either die and are sent back "Past the Sigils" or become known enough to truly ascend and become more like Gods in the traditional sense. Examples soon to follow...

>>Gremger; War in Chains:
There is a legend in almost every culture in the Fourth-Sworn galaxy, telling of a brother who murdered his brother and who, in grief and regret, bound himself in heavy iron chains; thus was born Gremger: The First Murderer. Though this tale is definitely untrue, since gods are not born from mortal bodies, the tale still holds some truth of Gremgers nature: he is an angry, raging god, bound in countless chains to keep him from mindlessly destroying. Some say he was the first God the Angels worshipped, representing their binding of The Gods. He is worshipped by warriors, war-lords, and the insane: binding themselves to strive for betterment through training, or to keep themselves from harming others through self-flagellation. Gremger rewards the most devout with legendary powers such as firey-breath, and metal-bodies, sometimes even granting them a section of his own chains: powerful relics and weapons.

(Note: This is based in a setting where magic and magical creatures exist, and also space travel higher technologies, and in it angels were the first creatures to survive the gods mad creating/destroying cycle to seal them away)

I usually make a god that will influence, somehow, the course of the player's journey. Most of the time, it's a god of mischief that the players manage to anger somehow or a god of games that likes to toy around with mortals or other gods and chooses the players as his or her play things.
To keep things diverse, I also change their appearance or how the things they influence unfold. For example, one god of chaos may be an aberration while another god of mischief may just be a tiny, imp-like creature. Or they may be 'forced' in a tournament by a religious group or have monsters run after them instead of simple bandits.

But really, I tend to leave it up to the players. If none of them have any, in-character, knowledge of religion... well it's pretty hard to give them hints and lead them in a certain way without railroading or the like. If they also don't like divinity stuff (some don't... I know I tend to not like it so much if a DM brags about his pantheon or whatever), then I just pick something else or reason it with some other things.

I've also hidden the genders of deities before. Like the god of sleep/unbelieving that wakes up and only old tales that were written without proper pronouns and the like.

That's basically the whole reason I made the religion large: so it would be constantly in conflict with itself. The only thing that keeps it together is that no one ever challenges the rules, always serving their punishments if it can be shone that they are guilty. But with cases like the 6th banana clause, conflict revolves around interpreting the rules.
