You've no idea what a Spartan was doing in these tunnels, but you've no time to think about it as two elites are charging towards you, ready to fight hand-to-hand. You hastily draw your knife, ready to get into another desperate hand-to-hand fight with an alien twice your size.

Until the Spartan turns around, and in a flurry of blows, beats one to death, then puts a full magazine of 7.62 into the other, killing it.
"I believe we were yelling incredulously," the Spartan, a woman, says in a British accent.
"Oh, so not only is she a killing machine, she's snarky too," you say, incredulously.
"I'm not your average Spartan," she says. "Question time comes after we get out of these tunnels. There's more Elites following me."
You're still trying to catch up with what happened.
The Spartan starts walking in the direction you came from. "This way, right? Chop chop."

You make it back to the burnt out armoury, and just arriving themselves are
Penny and Jacobson.
"Friendlies," you say, coming up to them.
"Churchill?" asks Jacobson. "What's going on down here? We heard shooting as we..." he trails off as he notices the Spartan. "Now I want to know even more."
Penny steps outs from behind Jacobson. "Matilda?" she asks the Spartan.
"Oh thank goodness, I found you," replies the Spartan.

We'll shoot me "can talk"
>>
"Question time is when we get OUT of these tunnels, remember?" you say.
"Quite right," says the Spartan. "We may want to clear out while we can."
You can hear roars echoing down the tunnels as elites prowl, looking for you.
"Let's get out of here, then," Jacobson says.

The five of you jog out of the tunnels, but don't stop at the mouth of it, instead you keep moving until you're well away from the base and out of sight of any enemy who would still be inside.
"So," you say, a little breathless; it's been a long night. "What's the relation here? Who is this Spartan?"
"Spartan G303 Matilda, ACRE Team," introduces the Spartan. "You may have heard of me, you may have not."
"You're our Spartan?" you ask her.
"I'm the Spartan assigned to ACRE Team, of which you are a part of."
"What are you doing here?" Penny asks. "I thought you were supposed to be in orbit?"
"Well, when the whole Covenant fleet slipped in right above your heads, Captain Becker decided that you'd need some help. I dropped in a pod nearby to link up with you guys and make sure we all make it off-planet in one piece."
"Captain Becker sent you? Really?" Penny says.
"Well, she didn't send me, but she couldn't argue once I was in the pod and heading into the atmosphere."

>"So you're a wild card, huh? Great!"
>"Well, I'm glad for the assist. We need all the help we can get down here."

"A snarky killing machine, who stole a drop pod so she could come save our butts? I think we're going to get along."
"Hey, gotta look out for your squaddies, you know?"
"Well, I'm glad for the assist. We definitely need all the help we can get down here."

"I didn't know we had a Spartan on the team," says Jacobson.
"I only just met her now," you tell him. "Only heard of her before now."
"I've run into a few Spartans in my combat career, but never got to meet them like this," he says, giving Matilda a look. "Guess we'll be getting to know each other, then."
"There's not much to know," she replies. "But we can leave that for later. What's our plan here? What are we doing?"

"Well, we've got four more ODSTs to find before they get killed by the Covenant," you begin. "There's three in New Alexandria, and I think one got caught up in the push for Viery."
"Right, right, I got the intel before I left," Matilda says. She pulls up a wrist mounted computer and begins tapping it. "Gunnery Sergeant Edward Buck, Corporal Levern Kendrick and Corporal Moana Kipling are all still in New Alexandria according to last reports. Corporal James Matthewson was in Viery, and went missing in action during the battle. We're probably not going to see much of him."
"Well, that makes things much simpler for us, then," you say grimly. "We'll only need to go to New Alexandria to find our last guys."

"How are things looking elsewhere on the planet?" you ask.
"To put it in one word: fucked. Everything is absolutely tossed," she tells you. "Manassas is under siege by two battlecruisers right now; Quezon is getting torched. The whole planet has a standing evacuation order that was issued a couple hours after the enemy fleet came in."
"Quezon's getting torched?" asks Erika. "We were there just yesterday!"
"Yeah, well, when UNSC Quezon got destroyed, the city was basically defenseless. Our guys had to retreat out of the city entirely, taking as many civvies as they could along the way. Anyway, we're holding out so far. Viery is a right mess, but with HIGHCOM and everything else being located out there, it's a proper stronghold. Reach isn't about to fall just yet."

"So I hope that news has installed a little bit of urgency in everyone. We don't have the time to waste. Anyone got any more questions?"

>Any more questions?

Jacobson shakes his head. Erika shrugs, and Penny says "We're already acquainted, so no."
The Spartan looks at you. "Nothing from me," you say.
"Right then, time to march. New Alexandria?"
"That's where we're going," says Jacobson.
As if you haven't had enough of marching already.

- - - - -

The sun has finally risen on a long, long night. You've made it to New Alexandria, after a long trek that started in UNSC HIGHCOM, passed through Quezon, and ended here.
"I really hope our guys are in there," you say out loud.
You note the three corvettes hovering above the city as you descend towards it. You've had enough of those bastards.
"Alright," says Jacobson. "We're here. Now what?"

"I need a new bird," says Penny. "We find one, we can cover more of this city than if we didn't."
"Corvettes are still hovering around up there," you say. "Covies probably got a lot of air support. Could be a good idea to find a warthog or something."
"I think we should link up with any UNSC in the area," says Jacobson. "See if we can help out while looking for our guys. Can't hurt to do our part while we're here."
"Well, I'd rather not do that, for obvious reasons," say Matilda. She checks her wrist display again, and then looks up at the sky. "Satellite coverage is spotty, but I might be able to contact ACRE Dispatch, find the locations of our guys. We get in, get them, then get out without any messiness, easy."

>Let's go with Penny's plan. Find a bird, go looking.
>Let's go with Jacobson. Local forces need all the help they can get, and they can help us out too.
>Let's go with the Spartan's plan. There's no need to waste time here when we can get in and get out quick.

>Let's go with the Spartan's plan. There's no need to waste time here when we can get in and get out quick.
if we come across any friendlies on our way though, I wouldn't be averse to helping out if its not too much trouble, but we've got a mission to stick to, and a very limited window for evac and exfil

>Let's go with the Spartan's plan. There's no need to waste time here when we can get in and get out quick.

We've a job to do,and it's important in its own right.

That said, this
>Let's go with Penny's plan. Find a bird, go looking
Is probably the most efficient way of completing our mission

quite possibly, use the sats to find our guys then 'commandeer' some transport to get them and get out quickly
>>
"As much as I'd like to stick around and help, we've got a higher mission hanging over our heads. Spartan's right, we need to get in and out of here quickly. It's not our fight anymore."
Jacobson sighs, but says "Yeah, that makes sense, as much as it hurts me to say it. Been a marine half my life, though, and fighting aliens is all I know."
"Yeah, I getcha," you reply. "Anyway, getting a new pelican should probably be on our agenda too. The prowler doesn't have a spare, does it?"
The Spartan shakes her head. "We've got room in our hanger for a starfighter, a combat transport, and a civvie transport. Civvie isn't going to cut it for a combat landing, so I agree, we should find ourselves a new pelican. After we find our guys, though. We'll have a better chance of getting out of here if we only use the pelican to get away and into orbit."
"Can't disagree with that."

The Spartan spends a few minutes fiddling with her wristpad, but finally seems to make some progress.
"Rightio, I got the locations on two of our missing squaddies. Moana Kipling is at the spaceport, can't give a more exact location than that. Levern Kendrick is at the base of... that space tether." She points to the one closest to you. "Seems like he's with a marine contingent trying to prevent the covies from taking the elevator for themselves, though I doubt that'll help if the covenant decide to load it full of plasma. Anyways, Eddie Buck is missing from sat coverage, but we can find him later."

"Space tether first. Seems like the most vulnerable place, and the spaceport might have pelicans there, so once we get there we can get out."
"Good plan," says Penny. "But how do you think we'll get over there? It's out in the sea."
"Well, Penny, we could walk. There's a road out to the base. Or we could find a boat. Regardless, we wouldn't last long in the air. The Corvette and anyone else would chew us up over that open water."
"Boat's a little exposed," says Jacobson. "There's a lot of water between us and the elevator."
"But it would cut our travel time by three quarters, compared to taking the route through the city then over the bridge," says the Spartan.

Again, it seems like it's up to you.

So what if we used the boat...... ON LAND?!
Carry the boat on our backs across the roads, the covvies won't see it coming.

"We can take the risk on the boat. Getting there fast is better than getting there to find them all dead. At the same time, we have more options to get out when it's time to leave."
"Sounds good enough," says Erika. "I'm tired of all this walking anyway."
Yeah, and she didn't have to walk to Quezon, did she?

It's not a far walk to the civilian docks, thankfully enough. You can see a number of pleasure craft and other civilian boats. The whole place is abandoned, though, in the wake of the covenant attack. This area hasn't seen any fighting, but it's eerie just the same, lying in the shadow of a burning building with ash and embers in the air.

You have a number of craft to choose from, most of which are ready to go.
There's a small rubber dinghy. It's motorised, and will probably make a good clip on the fairly flat surface of the water. With it being open, the entire squad could focus their firepower on anything that decides to fuck with you. Downsides are, it's a dinghy, it's small and it's fragile. A few hits are all it takes to sink it.

There's a medium sized patrol boat, with SEA RESCUE printed on the side. Won't be as fast as the dinghy, but less likely to sink if something looks at it the wrong way. There isn't much cover from the air, though.

Finally, there's a large-ish yacht. The slowest of the three, but probably affords the most protection to you and your squad. Upon inspection, you've also found a large arms locker inside it, with what is definitely a contraband rocket launcher inside, and some reloads for it.

"Well, we wanted to be in and out quick, so I vote dinghy." There aren't any major objections. "But first," you say as you head over to the yacht. You head inside and raid the arms locker, getting ammo and the rocket launcher. You give it to the Spartan. "I think you know how to use this."

The dinghy starts with minimal fuss, but with some trepidation. There's a lot of open water between you and that space elevator, and all you have to defend yourself are a pair of rocket launchers and a bunch of assault rifles. A banshee or two, you could handle, but anything bigger than that was a death sentence. Hopefully you made the right choice.

And I think I'm gonna call it here. Been at it for some hours already, and I got up pretty early (by my standards) to do this. Unfortunately we didn't get to any combat this thread, but I guess we're going to start off with a bang (or a splash) next thread, huh?
