"Staunch denial of reality works miracles sometimes" -- General Absalom ben Sefir, on Witches and their battle tactics.

I am Maria the NAMELESS, Lady of house Antioch, and, right now, about to "have been" just that. The cause for that is right now barelling towards my little group, a giant monster of burning rock whose feet make the ancient marble shake with each thunderous step

You can't handle the ice-queen! Son, we live in a world that has lolis, and those lolis have to be guarded by witches with halberds. Who's gonna do it? You? We have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. The fancy-dress girls weep for the noble sacrifice of the officer and curse the 'common' soldiers. She has that luxury. And our existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to her, saves lives! She doesn't want the truth, because deep down in places she doesn't talk about at parties, she wants us on that wall. She needs us on that wall.
>>
Fumbling blindly my instincts spring into action, the drive to protect bigger than anything else. With a shouted "GO!" I push my companions into the next open door and retreat when--

"GUARDIAN OF THE WEST ROAR IN REALMS SUPERNAL, THE SAGE'S PATH IS BLIND AND UNERRING, DELIVER UPON US THE GIFT OF ETERNAL.... REST!"

A figure, twin-tailed and quick zips overhead, her form illuminated with pale light thant dances and writhes. In an instant she's in between us and the monster, chains springing into existence from the floor and quickly wrapping around the rock-and-flame torso which makes it roar and trash like the living incarnation of world's end.

Shaking the hand she's still proferring I try to form a sensible sentence, still at once awed and utterly terrified at what just happened.

"P-pleased to meet you, these are Eriadne and Helena. " They step out from what was apparently a broom closet, dusty but unharmed.
"My name is Maria and I-- Viktor?!"

Something in my voice or look must've been funny because she's laughing, grimy hands desperately trying to hold it in as her entire form shakes under barely-contained mirth.

"Sorry, I'm so sorry". Another round of giggling that slowly transforms my shock into annoyance.

"Yes, he's been just a teensy little rock all the way here but then he forgot to be good and here we are..."

She steps up to the still bound but much more quiet creature and touches its forehead, its body transforming into shimmering dust that only leaves a single red floating stone behind. She puts it into a leather bag on her belt and turns back to us.

"You see, my Ma's both an artificier AND a witch and she taught me how to make creatures just like him!" What's with today and people telling me things unasked?

"You said it's yours?"
"Yes".

"You made it?"
"YES!
"That is... SO COOL!"

I try to contain it, but the sentence bursts out of me without my will. Dammit me, didn't we have an agreement?

"And you can already do spells?!"
"Why, yes!!"

"--SHOW US HOW!". Helena has shaken off her shock rather quickly for being so tiny and runs forward, looking up to the strange girl pleadingly.

I shrug and turn to my other companion. Now I've never been good with nobles, but if they think anywhere close to the way us regular people do she's wishing nothing more than to strangle the newcomer barehanded. Uh oh.

Right. Library. Get it together me, she might be cool but you had a plan, and "A human who can't stick to his word is like a bucket without bottom", as my father used to tell me and anyone else who would listen. I'm not sure if that's what he meant, but it feels right in the situation.

I wave in what I hope is not too obvious a fashion and take Eriadne's hand, pulling her along.

"You know, you never told me what you did before you came here".

"Neither did you".

"I learned how to be a guard from my father". Not *exactly* right, Pa mentioned it as an option but she really doesn't have to know that, now does she? It was what I would have become if I hadn't been called so it's as good as true.

"That… is not what I was expecting". She seems thoughtful as my shorter legs struggle to keep up. Heavens, I hope we are still on the right track.

"Why?"

"You don't look the type", she says, shrugging.

"Looks have nothing to do with it! Anyway, I told you. It's your turn now". I can feel myself colour and quickly look out the window, the ancient trees outside almost reaching here.

"Well, I suppose I cannot hurt". She takes an audible breath. …I hope she's not mad at me for being so pushy. Before I can apologize, she continues.

"Formerly, I was known as Lady Eriadne of house Vega, First among Firsts, mistress over the isles of mist and heiress to the Swallow Sceptre. Does that suffice, or do you want a full list of holdings and titles?" Her voice has become low and distant, the sound of winds stirring the last few leaves through the streets before the first snows fall.
1/?
>>
I swallow, search for my voice, and swallow again. There wasn't ever much talk about nobility in faraway lands in our home, but House Vega and their vast industrial and trade empire was different. Not only is their blood strong, but they also managed to secure influence over large parts of commerce in these parts of the world. In other words, even without titles they probably own half the land by now.

"Do you, uh… do you miss home?", I ask, cursing myself the moment the words have left my mouth. Of course she misses home. Which girl doesn't miss home? She's just gonna be mad again and then all my work will be for nothing an--

"Miss it? I don't know. Imagine knowing that whever you go, all doors are open, and on the next they're all gone."

"I'm so--"

"Don't. It helps nobody and just spreads misery to those who don't deserve it."

She sighs again.

"You could say in a way I'm happy for it. My life was determined for me, till then. Attend meetings. Learn the trade. Assume the title of High Duchess. Marry a prince with strong dragonblood. Learn a few useful charms from a hired hedgewitch. Be a", her voice, surprisingly, manages to get a few degrees colder "good, proper nobel".

Stunned, I almost forget to move my feet before catching up to her, the two of us walking in silence for a while as I go over what I just learned, trying to understand how that would be like.

Duchess Maria somehow doesn't quite have the same ring to it, the thought indadvertedly making me smile. Hope she didn't… she did, her look shifting from nostalgic to curious and annoyed.
2/?
>>
>>33170229
It lives!
>>
"What is it?"

"Sorry"

"Not an answer".

"I knoow. Sorr-- I was thinking how 'Ducchess Maria' would sound".

"You're odd".

"So are you".

I glare at her. She, well, 'glare' doesn't quite describe the look of longsuffering displeasure she gives me, but after two heartbeats her mask breaks as the corners of her pale yet full lips take on a life of their own.

We're both still laughing when Helena and Evangelyne finally catch up to us, both of them probably deciding at the same time that we're completely and irrevocably crazy.

Once at the library door the both of us make a shushing motion, the perfect synchronicity forcing us to take deep breathes and look anywhere but each other before being calm enough to enter.

"Crazy witches, huh", Evangelyne says behind us. She's probably the last person I'd want to hear that from, but I keep the thought to myself, instead soaking up the atmosphere of the dimly lit space, admiring the sheer wealth of knowledge all around us.

Indeed, but sadly I'll need to leave soonish. Since my work involves programming, I need a functional brain and I've discovered through empirical observation that four hours is pretty much the minimum amount of sleep required for that.
>>
[X] Look up Combat introductions.

Leading my little gaggle of new friends we quickly discover an upperclass student willing to help us. I take the small slip of paper and, after memorizing it, hand it to Evangelyne and Helena, hoping to more quickly find our destination by "sweeping the area and sniffing out its secrets" as my Pa would say now.

[X] Flirt
For some reason -- I might as well blame outside forces as my own idiocy -- I decide to do this thing boys do when they want to tease or anger a girl.

"You're pretty cute, Eriadne".

"I'm not".

"You're not?"

"The term is beautiful, elegant or comely. Cuteness is for children".

"Oh".

I'm not sure what I expected, but feel like I learned something.

Just then, Helenan's "FOUND IT" pierces through the silence, visitors turning in deep displeasure. Goddess, how I wish to turn invisible right now. Unfortunately, the goddess doesn't answer and so I motion Eriadne to keep a steady pace, both of us pretending no involvement whatsoever with the shrill bundle of excitement a few paces away from our position. Just keep on walking. Steady. Composed. Completely unsuspocious...

Who'd have known my skill of blending in would be so useful here!

After a couple more turns to make sure we wouldn't be seen we're standing in front of the relevant books, Helena's temper a slight be more subdued. Did she get tired or did Evangelyne do something to her? Eriadne and Evangelyne, being the quickest readers of us, select a few titles and we carry them back to a table with comfortable velvet plus chair and an ornately carved yet obviously ancient table.
>>
>>33172570
I learned my letters, sure, but I still stumble reading through the foreword: "War begins the the mind and ends in the mind". "Hey, Eriadne, what does that mean?"

"It means stupid people start wars and smart people end them". She shrugs, fingers knotting into what I presume must be an arcane gesture from the book before her.

"No, it means a good general has the power to end a conflict if she has a good idea!". Evangelyne's heated response is met with a shrug and more gestures, causing her to lean forward and adjust something about the pattern in which Eriadne's fingers curl and uncurl themselves.

I sigh and turn to "The Complete Moron's Magnificent Magical Manual". Theory never sat well with me.

"Witches are protectors. To protect, we have to fight. To fight, we use the disciplines of Curse, Charm, Mind, Protection and Theurgy. Each witch has a Pact Sigil somewhere on her body. It is a direct link to the Goddess and proof of our powers".

So far, so obvious. I skip a few pages ahead.

"Low Magic is magic unconstrained by disciplines. As such, only the base magical talent and sheer will of the witch decide whether she is successful or not. Low Magic is split into Force, Sight and Body. Force deals with direct magical damage. Sight deals with knowing the battlefield and the enemy. Body deals with manipulation of a Witches and her allies physical form."

"High Magic is an art that uses a Witches Totem, and will be handled in detail later in these pages".

I sigh, ribbing Helena before she can get too loud again.

This will… take quite a while. A glance at the giant clock in one corner suggests it might end up taking too long.

And with that we end early here. I hope you enjoyed it. Will continue once I wake p and the thread is still here, otherwise tonight/tommorow night, depending on your timezone.
