Hey folks, first time trying to run one of these, but lets do it.

CIV THREAD

First to race/terrain to three votes wins.

Got about 4 hours or so.

All rolls are 1d100 unless specified, rolls are only counted if they're asked for.
I request that players use names for clarity when counting votes, etc.
>Please greentext votes.
Rolls will have a semi-arbitrary target that players must roll over to succeed, only one player needs to roll over a target for the civ to succeed. The more players that roll = the more 'effort' your civ is putting in.
Majority rules, except as below.
A rolled 1 makes the turn's result a critfail regardless of other rolls except...
A rolled 100 makes the turn's result a crit success and supersedes a critfail.

Celestials in a Necropolis

It begins with a spark of light in the dark void. The spark grows into a fire, the fire spreads into a blaze, within the blaze there is fashioned a delineation. A company of angelic beings formed out of divine radiance, existing now for the very first time. Instinctively they feel the calling, down, to the material plane. It is a summoning. As one the beings alter their nature and proceed into a channel of light, taking them from the celestial heavens to the material plane and giving them material forms. They arrive in a thunderbolt of light and a crash of thunder. Instinctively they feel out with their sense for the just cause that has called them here....

And are shocked by the emptiness that confronts them. 44 angelic beings stand in a dark and moldy chamber, upon the raised dais of long decrepit altar. Walls of black stone and statuary of forgotten kings decorate the large ceremonial chamber. There is not another being in sight.

The divine purpose that should drive you is missing. For now, you are called to seek out what it might be.

Leothel directs 4 Warrior angels and 2 Angels of wrath to establish a perimeter, the remaining 8 warrior angels and 3 Angels of wrath begin scouting the area.

Your scouts find that you are inside a large and ruined cathedral of some sort. The cathedral's front entrance is somewhat defensible, but it sports a number of cracked and shattered tall stained glass windows on its sides. The cathedral also has a rear entranced leading to a walled off courtyard, and a parsonage, long abandoned.

The scouting party finds that the cathedral is located in what appears to be a city square. Immediately outside the cathedral is a ruined statue, the square is surrounded by ruined buildings.

The scouting party also discovers something else of interest. Just outside the cathedral is a a long and elaborate runic circle in silver chalk. Nearby they find the corpse of some manner of undead wearing ceremonial robes, surrounded by tomes and candles, and unguents. He appears to have ripped apart with claws and bladed weaponry. Near his corpse, the chalk circle has been disturbed.

C) Other (Roll)

In the meantime, the muses direct other angels on how best to reinforce the cathedrals defenses. They can take some spare materials from inside the cathedral to increase defensibility, but repairing structural damage will require materials.

Your Miracle workers attempt to purify the magic circle. They learn that it is a summoning circle meant to confine and command celestials, probably the work of the dead caster and his tomes of magic. They can only guess as to what his purpose was.

(POST TOO LONG, PART 2 COMING AS SOON AS POST LIMIT EXPIRES)

Your miracle workers examine the tomes and confirm that you were summoned by this undead. The tomes outline how to prepare summoning circles, to call celestials. Scouring the tomes for any other useful magic yields some mortal spells, fireball, invisibility, and individual hiding spells. Curiously, it appears that one can only summon celestials if one possesses a noble purpose.

The wounded angels will heal in 1 turn.

Combat:
The scouting party forms a defensive a formation with spear wielding angels in a defensive wall, additional the two angels of wrath stand to the flanks of the wall hacking apart any zombies that might take you from the rear. 2 of the warrior angels is wounded in the fighting.

The scouts find that this building is more or less uninhabitable, but possesses salvageable lumber. Leothel tasks the cherubs with harvesting as much as they can.

After the fight the scouting party moves on to the Eastern building. There they find no zombies, but it is in a dilapidated state, and there are strange things there. They notice that the floors are scored and scratched as if by clawed feet, valuable timber has been loooted, as well most everything else of value. Disgusting piles of filth dot the building as well, some relatively fresh. There are occassional skittering sounds coming from the dark of the basement.

I was going to wait for like 3 responses. But lets keep going.

Your miracle workers commune with the divines. They encourage you to perform the soul calling ritual upon the dead summoner and speak to him. They also provide a reassuring sense that there is indeed a divine purpose for your cadre here. (note that the zombie infested building was to the West) scouting beyond that building reveals a grand causeway that leads to an ominous, ruined palace. There are also numerous buildings that appear to be apartments between here and there. It is possible that they are also zombie infested.

The wounded angels have healed.

Your miracle workers call the summoner's soul back to his body. However, rather than reinhabit his corpse, he returns as a Divine Herald. In his new angelic form, he explains to your group his sordid tale.

His name is Don Horatio, many many years ago, he was an archmage of Brujalenza, the city you are in now. It was not a necropolis then, but a flourishing coastal trading metropolis. Its success fuel by the ingenuity of its residence, but also by its use of magic. The city's major magical advancement were derived from looted artifacts from the swamps to the south and west.

One hundred and nine years ago however, the city was afflicted by a terrible pestilence, and invasion by the skaven. Many had no idea why the disaster had befallen them, but Don Horatio and a few other elite leaders and wizards knew that their doom was brought upon them by their use of the magical artifacts from the swamp. Their society was too dependent on their power to get rid of them, however, and foolishly tried to seek magical cures for the plague while fighting the skaven. They failed, and now the city has become a wasteland, inhabited by the dead and subterranean skaven. Don Horatio had spent years gathering the magical implements to summon celestials to come to the city and destroy the cursed artifacts, so that the restless dead could find peace. However, he was killed by a skaven foraging party before he could complete the ritual. Now you are here, but are not bound by pact to accept the task he asks of you.

Your Warrior angels can radiate light from high and open spaces to cause pain to the undead and prevent them from assaulting in the open, however, the radiance is only painful, not lethal.

Nevertheless you have an easy enough time pushing west. Your scouting group approaches the palace and finds that it is a large, ivory building, long rotted and encrusted with grime. Cracks run down the faintly gleaming walls in the gloom. The gates are smashed open. There appear to be a few flying forms up near the tops of the spires. And from within you can hear faint and occasional groans and schemes. A cackle of female, manic laughter echoes in the upper distance.

Your scouting party pushes into the palace. It is immediately obvious that it was once a place of astounding beauty. Now however it is a complete ruin. The bottom floor is appears to contain the great hall and audience chamber. The upper levels are accessed through a stairway in the audience chamber.

A throne is visible here, it is empty. Upon trying to reach the source of the laughter, your scouting party is confronted by a cadre of elite revenants in full plate armor, wielding halberds, swords and shields.

You don't have miracle workers on hand to cast the spell.

The battle is pitched at first, and seems even, with one of the Warrior angels taking a wound. Things change when an Angel of Vengeance breaks into the central cluster of harpies and downs the matriarch. The radiance and her falling breaks the harpies morale and 16 fall in quick succession before the remaining 7 harpies surrender.

They say that the slaves are kept in the central tower and the treasure is kept on the top level.

You guys know the drill for whatever you want to do at this point.

There are 14 slaves. 5 Elves, (2 m, 3 f), 7 goblins, (6 m, 1 f), 2 humans, (1m, 1f), 1 half elf in tattered noble robes (f).

The treasure consists of various valuable baubles, looted nobles things. And one brimstone device that seethes as if it were being held to a fire.

Your warriors find the slaves and treasure. Your angels can deal with the slaves and captives now, or bring them back to the cathedral and decide as a group.

The device reacts violently to the angels touch, and the angels themselves feel an intense unpleasant reaction to it.

The angels back at the cathedral receive a divine message that the angels who are on a scouting expedition to the palace will find one of the artifacts, they also learn that the scouting party will find a person who is not what they seem to be.

All seem to be making the inference that the device is the artifact and the half-elf is the person who is not as they appear. A closer examination of the half elf reveals that she is about 35 (which would be 20 in human years), she does not respond to questions as though she was lost in despair. She does not resist being moved.

They are particularly concerned about disease, they were safe in the tower, but now they will be vulnerable and will look to the celestials to cure them. Food will be an issue now.

The humans and elves say they are subjects of Merelana, a city-state to the north. They come from various walks of life but were captured by the harpies while traveling close to brujalenza. The goblins were a raiding party from Morka-Gorka, to the NorthWest. The half elf continues being unresponsive but unresistant.

Upon returning to the cathedral, Don Horatio, now an angel confirms that this device is one of the artifacts. He says it must be destroyed, but first asks for an opportunity to attune himself to it. He says that if he does so he will be able to find the other artifacts.

ABCD, you know the drill

(It appears the food for the captives may have been... other captives, at least somewhat). They are all starved.
>>
>>33215151
Gather food, I guess. Goin' with >>33215223

Also, I may be paranoid-as-fuck, but Horatio wanting to attune himself to an artifact hazardous to angels is setting off an alarm in my head. Be cautious as always.

And keep an eye or four on the half elf.

Is there ANY food here?

The angels are divided on what to do with Horatio's request, so they beseech the Gods for guidance. The Gods seem to favor Horatio's request, but you are advised to destroy the device as soon as he is finished. With some reservation they allow horatio to attune himself to the device. The process is draining to his new form, but he learns the location of the remaining artifacts.

It appears that you already have one of the six, the other six is held by the skaven beneath the city. The remaining 4 however appear to have been stolen and taken to other locations.

You also learn more about the world as you learn the distant locations of some of the artifacts. They are located in the areas of the red X's.

Bloody hell.Why.

Anything about where to find food?
>>
>>33215725
Well then, destroy the artifact once Horatio's done with it, and look for more food (have the cherubs search).

I suggest we get the artifacts from the skavens underground before journeying to the Xs. I'm at a loss for getting these artifacts without having an entire city if rat people comin' down on us.
>>
The gods warn you against trying to find food here. You have limited options. Poaching the local fauna is bleak, there are some rats and mangy dogs but they will provide little sustenance and risk disease. Or you may use your miracle workers to beseech the Gods for manna from heaven. One miracle worker can feed 12 mortals of normal size for one round in this manner, but it will take their full attention. Thus it will require 2 of your miracle workers to keep your guests fed. The final option is to leave the city in search of food. Your muses can inspire hunters and your miracle workers can bless crops. You must still pursue your purpose of destroying the artifacts though.

Your angels of wrath fall upon the artifact with their greatswords after the ritual. It crumbles into dust under the assault.

You also notice that since you have arrived, the area around the cathedral seems briter, the grime thinner, and the air a little cleaner. It seems you are having a positive effect on the surroundings by your presence.
>>
>>33216152
Well, feed by Miracle Workers then.

Meanwhile, we should find a way to make more Armors and Weapons. We need more Angels if anything.
>>
>>33216297
2 Miracle workers dedicate themselves to providing food for your "guests."

One of the humans and 2 of the goblins are smiths and can forge armor, with the assistance of the muses the armor will be angelic. The require metals. The cherubs can forage enough materials from the town to produce a 2 sets of Warrior equipment per turn or 1 set of Angel of Wrath equipment per turn. However, the cherubs will need to be guarded while foraging.

You must summon additional celestials to bolster your numbers, you will need a proficient mortal magician with a noble purpose. None of your current mortals are capable of doing so as is, but some could be trained in 3 turns.

Producing half celestials with interbreeding would take 3 turns, and would be extremely awkward, but is a possibility. (no rape is permitted).

>Half Celestials
Forget the race and forget the name that has been heard, forever. This will not do.

We should train someone who was part of the city abefore it fell if we can, he might be inclined to restore it.

In the meanwhile, The Military and the Cherubs could go hunting for Metals.

>>33216601

does Don horatio know the half elf "noble"

does the divine suggest soul callback on her?
>>
>>33216966

Leothel suspects that the foraging party will encounter hostiles. Specify the composition of the party.
>>
>>33217139
Ah! Yes he does. When he finally notices her he is shocked, and loudly proclaims that this is the daughter of King Francisco, the last ruling king of Brujalenza. By rights she should have been killed when the pestilence struck the palace, or when the skaven overran the city. Even if she survived that however, she should be at least 144 years old, a half-elf of her age would be elderly. Whilst he goes on about this she merely gazes at him.

Soul Callback is only usable on the dead, she appears to be alive, and more importantly, the spell does not work on her when it is tried.
>>
>>33217168
Wait no.Forget that.
Let's cleanse the surface instead.Wasn't there a location on the west we didn't purge yet?
>>
>>33217281
Get the Miracle Workers on waking her up or something.

What does Attonement do again?
>>
>>33217297
The palace was cleansed, the rest of the remains. It is not possible to estimate how many undead remain. If you want to try and wipe out the undead, you can start by specifying a district and getting out there and smiting. Highly successful combats will redeem lost souls into angels to boost your numbers.

You also understand that though you may purge the undead, they remain a symptom not a cause of the greater curse that hangs over the city. To remove that greater curse, you must find and destroy the 5 remaining evil artifacts.

Attonement is a magical mechanism for converting living creatures to good. Unwilling creatures can not be attoned however. The living creature does not need to be 100% repentant, but must submit to the ritual and have some desire to attone for their past misdeeds.

Soul recall can be performed on dead celestials to bring them back to life. It can also return dead mortals to life. Sometimes, mortals who are resurrected in this manner will return as celestials. It can also be performed on destroyed undead and with a small chance of redeeming them into celestials.

Okay.
So for reference, >>33215725 says we've taken 1 of the artifacts, and 6 have taken by the skaven to beneath the city.

Then there's 4 outside as documented.
That means there's 10 artifacts total not counting the one we've already destroyed right?
>>
>>33217496
Also, >>33217637 again.

As per >>33212351 , we should go to the Wizard Academy in the hopes of finding some magic.
Afterwards we should find a way to beneath the city as described.
>>
>>33217637
Total of 6, you destroyed 1, one is under the city with the skaven. The remaining 4 are in the various locations on the map, taken there by various means.

>>33217674
You set out to purge the wizard district(?) and recover magics. Thats what you mean right?
>>
>>33217952
