Your workers clamor to seal the gash in your hive punctured by the Void Shard you had experimented with just the other day. The ground just under the jungle has been annihilated entirely, leaving only a long scar in the ground and a line of trees and shrubs sliced in half by the expanding crystal. The artifact has since become dormant, and is now no more than half a meter across. Needless to say, this has slightly set back your construction progress.

Coil has spent his time since the test in a fit of hysteria as the complex color patterns of his faith's teachings dances across his skin. The Taidaren twins, Huey and Dewy are pitched in some argument regarding their situation, and Lyle has been drifting in and out of consciousness as the mixture of heat and humidity tests his endurance. He is not the only one to have noticed it getting warmer. Each day seems to be hotter than the last, and your drones are starting to become sluggish in the sweltering heat of the jungle outside. By midday it is like a pressure cooker, and you have had to decrease surface patrols during the day.

The Clarke’s hull is nearly repaired, and Theseus has laid out plans for the rest of the required repairs. With the hull patched up, you have taken note of the Union ship design philosophy. They place a heavy emphasis on survivability over maneuverability, but despite the heavy armor you have identified multiple vulnerabilities, specifically at the axis of the habitation ring, and the junction just aft of the forward shield cap.

Welcome back to Hive Queen Quest!

>Hangar Expansion – Add on to current hangar facilities for your choice of +40 aero drone space, or +20 shuttle space. 50N 100M
>Docking Pylon – Large spire designed to service the operation, construction and maintenance of larger FTL capable ships. Each Pylon holds 4 docking spaces for ship construction and maintenance. 100N 400M

Ship Construction Options
>Shuttle
Cost: 50N 150M
Size: 30 Meters
A small craft designed to transport goods, drones, or anything else that needs to move from one location to another. They are typically used only for transport to and from orbit, and can carry up to 25 medium sized drones at once, or a single large drone.

Space Pod
Cost: 20N 50M
Size: 10 Meters
Similar to your own pod, the standard Space Pod is an organic lump of sensors and maneuvering thrusters equipped with basic radiation shielding and a Blink Drive. They have very little room for cargo, and typically only carry a thinker and enough rations to last the duration of a mission. Due to the focus on small size and low energy signature, they are incapable of escaping a planet’s atmosphere, but can easily be towed by a shuttle.

Finished Research
>Grape Shot
This strange local fruit bursts open violently when disturbed, hurling sharp barbs in all directions. By isolating and altering the naturally explosive properties you have been able to produce a potent, compact explosive charge that can be delivered in projectile form.

>Fungal spores
These spores infect and attack the bodies of nearly any life form and are astoundingly adaptive. They take root in and alter the behavior of the infected to assist in the spreading of the fungal spores to new locations.

>Berry birds
The animated seeds of the small jungle bush are capable of instinctively tracking and finding a suitable mate using complex chemical trails. By integrating these into new and more effective forms you have developed an effective medium ranged weapon system capable of homing in on a specified target species.

>Cyclotron particle beams
The Cyclotron uses a ring of superconductive magnetic coils to accelerate a bolt of particles to near light speeds. Each shot requires a short charging time, and the weapon itself is frail and prone to failure when damaged. It makes up for these failings by offering a high powered, accurate long range weapon.

>Slip Drive
A deceptively simple device attached to the enigmatic crystalline Void Shard. You are still no closer to understanding the crystal itself, and in fact are now less certain that it is even possible to do so, but your understanding of its use now permits you to attach the Slip Drive to any single ship, as well as gaze into the twisted void of No Space.

>Unity Computer
While the sensitive data has been purged and much of the wires overheated into a twisted pulp, there is still much to recover from the discarded computer.

>Oxygen Recycler

>Lyle’s Combat armor

Not as powerful or complex as the drop suit, the combat armor appears to be a delicate mix of survivability and combat capabilities, with many similarities to the Union environmental suit. It appears to contain a number of devices designed to be useful in the field.

Research of the ocean spores has resulted in new fields of study.
>Bioweapon Research
Medium/ Very dangerous
Experimentation and testing with new artificial strains of spores, as well as other engineered toxins would make it possible to produce tailor-made bioweapons that would be quick to spread and difficult to cure.

Yes he does.

He knows we saw it. We showed it to him, he named it to us. He just doesn't know we 'won'.

Though Queen did ask, purely hypothetically, what Unity would do with Lyle Rogers in custody.
>>
If we tell him about the angel, then we are gonna have to kill him.

>>
>>33234339
The qm said that they would be drooling at a chance to study the crystal and maybe our way of communicating.
>>
>>33234203
Relatedly.

We don't have the tech to trade for FTL secrets of gravetic materials and the gravity drive from Theseus.

However, we are going to experiment with it to learn its secrets anyway, and if it's dangerous, well, for all we know the potential consequences could destroy us both or attract deadly Union attention, if their satellite in orbit is networked with them (don't reveal we learned this for sure from the Hel's Angel's pilot, only imply that we naturally assume it, being paranoid).

In which case, does he have any advice on our research methods to ensure our mutual safety?
>>
>>33234203
>Nothing at all.

"No disturbances at all." You respond as you direct your workers in repairing the damage. Your excavators have been sent to seal it quickly, their massive maws quickly molding liquid stone over the wound and covering it with dirt.

There is a short pause as power surges through the damaged sensor equipment. Your workers detect a diagnostic being run.
"I see. A sensor malfunction, perhaps. I apologize for the interruption."

>>33234313
Yes it is, the orbit is highly irregular, with extreme winters and summers. The dense atmosphere should mitigate the winter, but during the summer the mix of humidity and heat runs a risk of steaming your drones alive if they remain outside for too long.
>>
>>33234365
A prisoner with a ship that has comms and access to a destructive engine...
>>
>>33234261
We have a small window of opportunity while the satellite is blind, for the next week or two, to blink out of this system and attempt to colonize a new one.

the Pod is nice and stealthy, but we may want to consider larger options.
>>
>>33234371

Do you want the Union to investigate now?
>>
>>33234390
how long would it take to upgrade the queen herself with ornate combat grade armor and the most highest level of phonic power yield? it might be the key to operating that slip drive.
>>
>>33234470
Well the issue is now he's got regulatory control of the engines. The best we can do is ask him to research a lot of stuff until he dies and then disable comms shortly afterwards, while also researching how to control the engine itself so we can take care of it.
>>
>>33234447
And? You should have more than one plan, don't rely on just one. Redundancies.

If we use the current method of blinding it, and thus letting them *know* it's blind, it's suspicious.

Making the satellite 'hallucinate', hacking the live transmission feed to edit hive activity out of it will be very difficult if they designed it with any intelligence at all.

Every required system update will mean a new hacking mission to reverse engineer the new software's updated DRM scheme or whatever, and if the update takes too long to be installed (hacked) that alone will raise suspicions, and get a real maintenance crew on our bulbous egglaying ass.
>>
>>33234489
Instead of blinding the satellite, we could reprogram it to THINK nothing of note is happening on the surface. That or alter the data feed from the sensors itself. The signal won't be tripped if the feed does not reach the computer itself.
>>
>>33234508
by laying a new queen.
>>
>>33234419
You should note that he is incapable of "hacking" you. The adapter translates his signals into recognizable thought and vice versa, but the your organic thinkers are simply too alien to him to attack with any effectiveness

>>33234383
Would you like to ask for info on Canderon that is less technical? As it stands, it's dangerous because you have no idea what to expect from it. It could be harmless, it could explode in the presence of irony, you just don't know at the moment.

>>33234447
You could ask a member of the Angel's crew about that if you wish.

>>33234489
You currently have all the Canderon from the Clarke, so you could still repair it if you wished.
>>
>>33234508
No it's not. If Queen can control the ship it's on, which she can when equipped with FTL relays anywhere in the universe, she can access the void shards the same way.

>>33234390

>>

You've given me an uber bad idea.

Theseus could probably hack the satellite for us. But... that would give him a satellite.
Perhaps we could trade Theseus something for some programming knowledge?
>>

I thought we could cocoon ourselves and evolve that way.
>>
>>33234513
We don't know anything about how it operates.

Its changed it rules book when dealing with us cause now we are a threat
>>
>>33234563
I already thought of that, yes.

But that has to wait on learning basic Union computing technology, which we are learning as we repair the Clarke. We're still progressing on that tech tree.

Then we learn how to subvert Union computing technology.
>>
>>33234556
Yes, sure. Ask that.

He doesn't know we took the warp rings for ourselves, and those contain Canderon?
>>
>>33234102
Hey, research Lyle's Drop Suit. Didn't it shoot MISSILES? And/or had that self-destruct button he almost pressed.

haha time for explosives!

(And lay 26 more Thinkers.)
>>
>>33234562
The drones can tell the difference between their mother and a strange queen. The thoughts of foreign queens would invoke natural hostility as a precaution against just such things. Queens that are related directly, however, could "inherit" drones, however, if they are familiar enough.

>>33234563
It would be attacking a mutual enemy, so he would likely be ok with such a proposal.

>>33234615
Correct. To your knowledge he does not know you have the Canderon, all he knows it that it is missing.
>>
>>33234587
Yes, that's what I've already said. The idea is we learn enough about it so that it's no longer a factor when dealing with potential Theseus hostility.
Especially since we're not letting him leave the planet, he'll figure that out eventually.
>>
>>33234683
QD, can the queen upgrade herself or will she have to lay a new queen for it to have new upgrades on it?

>>

>>33234755
once we start to make colonies around this planet and on other planets in this system, an improved telepathy ability will be much more useful than having to rely on relay thinkers.

Even otherwise, it'd STILL only be able to talk to the Union. Union FTL-comms work on entangled particles. One comm unit only talks to one other comm unit.

He can still mess with us via black hole, but only if he's desperate, on his last legs as we try to shut him down.

But once we understand the Clarke computer system, we may be able to take control of the dangerous systems, if it ever becomes necessary. Hopefully it won't, though.
>>
>>33234819
No it wont. It's exactly the same thing except that incorporating more stuff into the queen will probably make it more awkward for her to get around. That's it.

Grafting a screwdriver into your wrist is not more useful than having a screwdriver.
>>
>>33234819
Yes, I'm sure we can just magically gain the ability to control any child drone in the entire universe without any psionic relays near the drone at all.

No if it were that fucking easy no queen would have psionic relays in the first place.
>>

Indeed, in fact, the Clarke's FTL comm was destroyed in the crash, so it only has local radio communications, and those have been damaged extensively.
>>
>>33234840
But it's going to come to a head eventually.
Since we don't want either Union or Unity to be as aware of us and our capabilities as Theseus is currently, we'll be keeping him here and when he figures that out I don't think he'll try to kill us with that because it'd be suicide via black hole, and he seems to be programmed to value knowledge too much to do that.

But that's just something he's told us, of course.

>Advanced: A powerful FTL communication system that can beam thoughts to any other advanced relay regardless of distance. (200N 250M)

We have standalone radio antenna drones.

We can have standalone FTL psionic relays.

Laying a psionic relay that is kept in our hive near the Queen is indistinguishable from adding one to the Queen herself, except it's more flexible.
>>
>>33234963
Right. That's definitely a bit more pressing.
>>
>>33234965
It has a small black hole active right now though.

That's where its quantum power tap is drawing from.

It needs Canderon to do FTL things, but it doesn't need Canderon to blow up like that signal beacon did in thread 4.
>>
>>33234956
I did read that. What is written there provides no evidence that I can see that supports the argument that incorporating further relays into the queen herself is necessary, optimal, or, indeed, possible.

>>
>>33235089
Apologies, I was the one you initially responded to and I was thinking about the reactor and not the engines. Theseus has control over engineering in general, so I must've lazily blanketed it together. Sorry for the confusion.
>>
>>33234905
As Theseus seems to return to his tasks you send your question.
"How extensive is your understanding of the humans' propulsion?"
"Extensive, as I had been piloting a ship prior to crashing. This ship is missing its supply of exotic matter, so I did not mention it before."
"In that case, where would we be able to gather more?"
Theseus pauses, briefly lost in thought. "That would be...difficult. The product used by human ships is a naturally stable form of exotic matter found in the cores of a select few stars. All of which reside within human space."

>>33235038
Any adaptation can be stand-alone. It's just a drone with only that adaptation. As it is, the advanced relay can connect to any other advanced relay that uses the same network.

>>
>>33235275
It occurs to me that so far our native FTL is the least rarified in terms of materials. No spooky crystals, no exotic matter found in stars, just good old fashioned space magic.
>>
>>33235315
There is no drone count limit though. Only range, except when enhanced by relays.

We don't spawn more Overlords, we just build more farms.

"Naturally stable..."
"Exotic matter, yes. It is unique in that it does not annihilate normal matter on contact, while also altering local gravity fields when subjected to enough energy."
"And they mine these stars?"
"At the moment, no. Most Canderon is currently mined by Canian labor from their home star. They are too primitive to resist the mining efforts."
Interesting. It seems the material is not as common as you had assumed.
"And if more Union ships arrive, is there a way to disable this?"
"Yes."
you wait for a moment expectantly, but he doesn't seem to be willing to part with that bit free of charge.

Tritium is babby FTL fuel. Way easier to get than impossible transdimensional artifacts or stuff found in only certain stars.
>>
>>33235407
How's this for evidence:
All the stars you can get Canderon at are in Union space.
We saw a Unity Server Ship FTL out of system.

I guess it's possible that they buy Canderon through proxies, but I find that unlikely.

As near as I can tell, Canderon isn't actually consumed, just necessary for the FTL drive. It's entirely possible that the Unity have a slowly diminishing supply that they're forced to reuse. Or they scavenge it from other ships.
>>
>>33235494
That's a question for the black box really.

About research.

One thing that isn't clear, is if the Union ship's sensors are better than our own sensor technology, which is key to calculations for the Blink Drive.

Is there room for sensor improvement through reverse engineering?

Anon every drone we have contributes to our processing ability however most of it is use to control the drones so we never really need to worth about running out of processing power.

we could do the whole random mutation experiment thing, were we use thinkers to facilitate generations of sensors to random evolve better stuff.
>>

No, reread that vision sequence. There were 3 vision and you just conflated the 2nd and 3rd.

Two were beings we remember meeting before. Lee and Theseus. The third we have no memory of, but odds are is someone we've met too. The end of our home planet, drawn there by extensive use of psionics.

You find a third, and see a strange sight. A planet...burning. Its crust being torn apart by something vast. You can feel it shift, shaping itself in space like liquid mercury, and it twists in your direction. You feel an unbearable pain run through your head and seal the doorway, the mote of light vanishing in a moment. The crystal retreats to its normal size with the sound of thunder as the air around it fills in the vacuum left behind, and the crystal grows silent.

You try again, keeping your questions as far from technical as possible. "How do Canians mine the star if they are primitives?"
"They dig. Canians are plasma based life. Their home system of Wolf contains only their star. They inhabit the surface, and operate the mining stations. Wolf is one of the most Canderon rich stars ever detected by humans, and the star is just cool enough to permit chemical bonds that permit the formation of life."
"But if it is so rare, how do they maintain their fleets?"
"It is not consumed, only used as a component in ship operation. It is still expensive, of course."
"And what about more advanced races?"
"What about them?" He seems confused on the change in subject.
"How did the Ceph and others come to enter the Union?"
"Ah!" You sense a sting of humor from him. "They have not, but many choose to leave their governments to live under them."
"Why?"
"Comfort. The Union offers many races luxuries they would not have otherwise. Most Ceph within the Union would suffer execution otherwise, I am sure they feel the situation is most agreeable by comparison."

>>33235446
Indeed, it's just Hydrogen-3, it's like using dirt for gas when your neighbor uses liquid platinum.

>>33235631
You can't tell until you research the Clarke. At the moment they are damaged, but Theseus would teach you the technology in return for helping to repair them.

The alternative is that the visions are completely random and the fact that it instantly focused on Lee and Theseus is a complete coincidence.

Coil said utilizing No Space is art, not science. The idea of it being coincidence is weaker than the paranoid inference.

Because that would mean we're already repairing them without getting anything from Theseus?
We can't logically have made that deal already, the other repair/knowledge exchange deal was for something else.
>>
>>33235762
This is all quite interesting, and better yet, you feel much more confident that the material won't suddenly obliterate your hive. He stops his mad flopping and faces two of his eyes in your direction before speaking through the speakers in his shell.
"Joyus occasion! To be chosen as a part of the plan is an honor of the highest order!"
"I have been wondering about something. I have heard that there are members of your kind that cannot change colors, is this true?" He flashes a reddish orange, striped with yellow.

"You speak of a plan, what is it?"
It is everything! The will of the universe made manifest, unknowable to those within." He jabs a tentacle in your direction. "but you are chosen as a part of it, you must be! This is why I am here, to guide you down the path, it is all clear now!" He almost hopes up and down, his body compressing under the weight of his shell like a sponge. You change the subject to hopefully calm him down.
"Then tell be about the satel--"
"The Monitor!" He begins to bound across the floor, hobbling over his tentacles like a treadmill, only to run into one of your warriors standing guard. "We must keep it in the dark! We don't have much time!"
"How much time, exactly?"
He shakes, thinking to himself in a panic. "Days, a week at most!"

You hear a beep from the machines of the Angel. The FTL comm device warms up, slowly churning in its place as it displays an incoming transmission.

>Failed to update.
>Transmit status update.

The machine indicates the transmission is from the string labeled as "Broker".
>>
>>33237015
Talk to coil and lyle about broker?
>>
>>33237015

"Then explain cloaking technology, so we can tamper with it stealthily."

"Also, you never spoke to Lyle's Broke yourself, did you?"
>>
>>33237015
The device becomes dormant again, but the transmission still sits on the display.

"Quickly, we must repair the ship to reach it in time! We cannot let them disrupt the plan!" Coil is still wiggling in the grasp of your warriors, oblivious to the transmission. With his comment you remember that he still does not know just how advanced you are, and that you could construct a shuttle rather quickly.
>>
>>33237015
Better have a chat with Lyle. Looks like his employer wants a word.
>>
>>33237015
That's not good. Can we make a shuttle to get up there quick if we don't have one already?
>>
>>33237015
So we have some options:

- ignore the Broker. Let them assume Lyle is MIA. Captured or killed by either the bug natives, or a passing Unity ship. Lyle is probably considered expendable, deniable assets.
- Ask Coil for help drafting up a fake status update to delay them. Unreliable, the broker always went through Lyle.
- Admit we captured the Hel's Angel to Theseus, and ask for advice how to con this guy.
>>
>>33237015
Are we supposed to make a status update?

If that's the case, it may be better to talk to Lyle before we try that, to prevent any you're-obviously-not-lyle shenanigans.

And I suppose we should make a shuttle to reach the satellite so Coil can do his tech-nav stuff.

He'll know how to trick us is what he'll know.

>>33237419
Beautiful.
>>
>Speak to Lyle about it
Before or after we ask him about it
>Sorry about killing you and taking your limbs
>nothing personal
>>
>>33237311
Talking to him beforehand as well is prudent.
>>
>>33237419
We pretty much have to say this now.
>>
>>33237419
It must be said.
>>
>>33237279

In my opinion, the Broker will probably already know something is wrong (because Lyle didn't transmit) unless we get a secret code of some sort from Lyle...which will either not happen, or be a distress call and make things worse.
>>
>>33237419
Ok, that is clever and cheeky, I like it. lets do it.
>>
>>33237279
>Ignore the transmission.
>>
>>33237419
You know, for the first time we talk to him with words this presents a wonderful first impression.
>>
>>33237710
why?
>>
>>33237279
"First, do you know how to operate your stealth device?"
"Of course."
"Then teach this technology."
Coil hesitates for a moment. "Well, I know how to operate it. The twins would be able to get it apart. I can get them to show you how to build it."
"Good."

You are surprised by how enthusiastic he is over helping you all of a sudden. You send him with some drones down to the twins' cell, while your speaker moves into the depths of your hive to where Lyle is held.

The door flexes open and his head jerks up to look for it in vain. The room is still too dark for him to see. Your drone moves into the center of the small room. He can't see you, but you can tell he hears the scuttling the speaker. "We have received a transmission. They ask for your status. What is your status?"

He offers a weary smile as he tries to adjust himself within the cocoon of chitin and stone. "Just hangin out." he says between labored breaths. Of all your guests, it appears humans have the most difficulty in hot and humid conditions such as this.

What do you say?
>>
>>33237752

"Affirmative, will transmit."
>>
>>33237752
How often are you expected to give status updates?

How long until they consider you MIA, and the contract passes to another?
>>

>>
Oh.

OHHHHHHHHHHH.

I got it.

We can be Coil, responding to the FTL transmission in a panic, because Lyle has been incapacitated after being infected by a local fungus that is completely resistant to their medical treatments. He's dying and can't communicate.

They might hesitate to send a new team, or they might just send the next crew with a lot more biohazard protections.
>>
>>33237814
Turn down the snark a little.
>>
>>33237862
Mite b cool.
>>
>>33237862

I doubt Lyle is very susceptible to disease.
>>
>>33237832
>After that mention that we want to obtain a contract with him.
What? No. God no. What are you thinking?

We aren't giving him freedom for anything. For every contract he might or might not succeed in for us, he could do a dozen for our enemies.

He's a wildcard, and he's staying in our hand.
>>
>>33237888
Disease no.
Parasitic fungus yes.
>>
>>33237752
Ask him what services he'd be willing to provide if we gave him some air con.

He won't. You can't give him a mission that says "for the rest of your life never ever talk about what you seen here." He'd never take a GEAS as a real contract. He takes shadowruns.

I'm simply not inclined to let all the biotech on his body walk away anon. Those implants must be worth some kind of cool research.

The room pulses with a soft red light as bioluminescent walls hum to life. Small veins carry streams of nutrients around the ceiling.
"Oh, now isn't this pretty. I'll have to remember to shoot whoever got the intel on you buggers."

"Are you comfortable?"
He starts to laugh and a crap in his side quickly stifles it.
"Cheeky bastards aren't ya? I've had worse, truth be told."
"Your allies-"
"Employer, let's be honest here, I hate that fat fucker, but he pays nice."
"Your employer is concerned for you. How long until they send a rescue?"
"Oh well, I bet they have a whole armada coming as we speak!" He licks his lips, his mouth is dry and his voice hoarse, but he just manages to be as abrasive as ever.
"Then they will not send more?"
"Oh who the hell knows? Depends on who else wants the money bad enough I guess. You know... you little talkin' one was worth twice the others, just thought you'd want to know."

He'll never admit what his mission was.

But he wasn't ON a mission from us when he came here, and saw things he shouldn't see. We can't bind him about those in our own contract easily.

>>33238201
Curious. What exactly did they tell you about us?

>>33238201
Well he's not giving information so how about we ask for a contractual service.
>>
>>33237862

Good, good, more technology coming to research!
And since they'll probably be thinking the whole planet's crazy dangerous, we can sow surprise and fear when we use our warrior castes' guns to rip their suits. I mean, what's more scary than getting your haz-mat suit torn in a leper zone?

>>33238264
No.

>>33238368
It's definitely not.

The interest that would pique would only mean there would be more where that came from, even if it is him personally, which it may not be at all.
>>
>>33238258
He's talking about our Speaker drone. Apparently, it's worth twice as much as any of our other drones.

>>33238418
Yup.
>>
>>33238201
"What were you told of us?"
"All the wrong things, from what I can tell."
"Such as?"
"That you were poor conversation. That part's true at least."
"And what else?"
"Look, if they had a book on the subject it wouldn't pay so well to get samples."

A small puddle of water fills from the capillaries in the floor. Your drone takes a quick drink from the makeshift bowl.
"Aw well fuck you too. I've played this game before, and it's got the same rules with every species. Except Valen, those fuckers are weird as hell."

"I've had her for years, and that crazy slip n' slide of hers is faster than a bat out of hell. Gives a nasty headache though."
"Have any others threatened your ship in the past?"
"Guy named Vadek. He should be hitting the atmosphere soon, actually... Are we gonna sit here and play twenty questions or are you gonna give me some of that water?"

He can't mean this atmosphere.

He means he spaced him out the airlock recently, and his decaying orbit is leading his corpse to fall down into whatever planet it was and burn up?
>>
>>33238725
Why do you day that?
>>
>>33238705
My issue with a contract is this: for what? What mission would we even send him on?

The other issue is his continuing to harass us with ever escalating forces at his disposal.

>>33238756
He is saying he killed the bastard in outer space.

Goddamn I know it's ambiguous phrasing in isolation but you have context, use your reasoning to help your reading comprehension.

He was a torturer, whose corpse is probably falling into the atmosphere.
>>
>>33238799
You're also aware we'd need to give him his ship back in order for him to get anywhere?

And his navigator, and the unreproducible ceph warp drive void crystals?

The alternative to that being we give him a shuttle?

No.
>>
>>33238810
>lyle making himself unemployed
>you thinking you can kill information
Can't stop the signal, Mal.
>>
>>33238811
I took that to mean that he was a competing merc also under contract with Lyle who will be coming to this planet soon.
>>
>>33238810
That's super vague. From what we've heard, newly discovered species are a hot commodity; there really isn't discrete entities to wipe out, interest will remain.
>>
>>33238691
You take the water and hold it up to him. "Who is Vadek?" You ask as he drinks.
"He would be the bastard that couldn't stop eating his damn cheese sticks at the console."
"Then you are quite protective of your ship."
"Don't you get fucking snippy now."
"It seems to be filled with interesting and fragile things."
He bites at your speaker's claw. You pull away just in time, dropping what was left of the water.
"You have any idea how hard it was to get a hold of her? Don't you fuckin' touch her!"
That felt like a nerve. Your speaker chitters its beak-like mandibles as Lyle struggles in his cocoon.

>Leave him for now
>Ask (write in)
>Other
>>
>>33238824
Yeah I agree.

NOT TO MENTION that now Coil, too, knows too much, in a far scarier way: He explicitly wants to blab to the high priesthood of the void that he's found a new species who can speak to the crystals naturally.

Now Coil is a dear, sweet, naive layperson who thinks this is joyous and means BFFs 5eva, but the more savvy Ceph might interpret this entirely differently.

>>
>>33238942
>Govt. funded scientists.
Just because he works for the frontier expanse as a scientist, and just because we assume it's him that's bankrolling this expedition out of his own pocket for his pet research theories, doesn't really make him qualify as that.

Since if it is him, it's more like a hobby of his not part of his job.
>>
>>33238919
>Leave him for now
>>
>>33238931
Yeah but religious zealot allies though.
And if there is some sort of power play with the Ceph elite it would be interesting.
>>
>>33238963
Meant to have the speaker, say that.
>>
The issue I have with hiring Lyle in general is that our circumstances are not actually parallel to Unity's.

Unity was a known thing before Lyle was ever sent after them, they were at no risk for their nature as an FTL capable faction being revealed and specific intel was likely deemed low-risk. In our case, all intel is high-risk if leaked, and our nature as an advanced species isn't known. suspected maybe, but not known.

Unity also operates from multiple semi-independent locations while we're bound to a single planet with relatively few resources to draw upon, for now.

It makes sense that he doesn't sell out the Unity as his employers because it would bite him in the ass and he can't meaningfully screw them over because they're migratory. Even with his honor issue, we don't actually know how he feels about intel gained on the mission he was captured on, or how loyal he is to those mission parameters themselves.

He's too risky to use.
>>
>>33238963
>>33238968
Don't tell him this.

It's better to just leave him worrying and going mad with what's said already.

Let the uncertainty eat away at him.

We have to keep the ship intact so we can get information out of him later with the threat over his head.

We need to ask Coil if he knows anything about the FTLComm. Like who Constantinople and Deep Song could be?

Everything went through Lyle, but Coil had access to the computer systems. I mean we have access to the FTLComm right now. Or was it locked in Lyle's private chambers?

We could get advice from him on how to impersonate him impersonating Lyle or admitting that all the humans are dead and Lyle is still dying of Space Cordyceps tumors.
>>
>>33239179
There is also a chance they would worship us, like the litte squid, what we might have to worry about is the cursed ones.
>>
QD, we still gonna research the 3 species' DNA to find out how to make food they can eat?

Will we be able to research Ceph color-shifting skin?
>>
>>33239179
We don't even know if there IS a High Council.
We don't know if Coil is dim witted an optimistic or highly eloquent for his species.
The main thing is we don't know!
Plus the "joining of our people" and the fact that it is "special" to be able to communicate without tech make me not as wary about your concerns. I mean it doesn't feel like they worship their tech. Just that they rely on it very heavily.
>>
>>33239252
I don't think Coil was worshiping us, he seemed more like he was happy to be the one responsible for finding another creature that is part of The Great Unknowable Plan, and wanted to inform his people of our species. That's the furthest thing from worship imaginable, bar desecration.
>>
>>33238919
Your speaker skitters through the door without a word, and the lights dim back into darkness.
"Hey! Hey get back here!"
The door flexes shut and he sits in the dark muttering a string of curses.

Coil is currently arguing with the twins, and has separated them on either side of him.

"Things scary! Why helping?"
"They are glorious creatures and it is our duty to help them fulfil their part in the plan by any means!"
"Plan dumb! Coil dumb! Getting eaten is bad plan!"
"Helpful things are not eaten."
"Shut up."
"You shut up!"
The two climb over Coil and begin slapping at each other until Coil manages to hoist them into the air.
"If you help you won't be eaten!" He says, his colors pale and flustered.
"Fine fine."
"Yes yes fine." They each say quickly. Neither appear very happy about the situation, but so long as they produce results they can complain all they want, especially since they are complaining to Coil.

>>33239442
While I am always for Science, he might consider that heretical if he realizes what we've done, and that will ruin his friendly mood.

In fact I'm almost sure it would be heretical, because it would be taking on the role of They, providing answers to his asks for advice.

>>
>>33239312
Why would we discuss ship construction with him?

Once we know how to make the cloaking device, Coil isn't needed except for the deactivation codes or whatever advice he has for tampering with the signal.

But didn't he say using the codes again would be suspicious to the Union? What's his plan with the Monitor?
>>

"Help them, teach them how the cloaking device works!" He says as he turns the corner. Another two warriors escort them to the ship.

"This device communicates with others like it, yes?" You say as you point out the device.
"Yes."
"Where are these locations?"
Coil shimmies up to the screen and peers over the desk. "The Broker only speaks with Lyle... Constantinople, that's in Sagittarius, never been there. Oh, Deep Water, that's the Valen bank. Nice place."
"Bank?"
"For money. They serve anyone, no questions asked. Lyle uses them for payments."
Interesting. That does explain how Lyle can take contracts from so many.

I'm assuming that pods sent outside of our FTL com range will have to follow fairly basic mission parameters? Ones a Thinker can carry out?

Also, how self-destruct can we make them?

That brings me to the next question of Advanced psionic relays.

I hope they aren't very big, and that you can fit one on a Pod.

Well, we could go all bio-acid pods on the inside to make them go boom.

Possibly a very advanced flesh-eating microbe tailored to destroy just the pod.

The advanced relay has unlimited range, basic relays that are default can cover many many miles, and the moderate relay, which is what your queen has, can control drones with a radius that can cover an entire planet at once. They work much like the Union FTL communications, but can connect to any other advanced relay, as opposed to only a single other.

Yes.

>>33240061
Well the cloaking device is optional, but yes I suppose that would work rather well. It would be largely defenseless at first though.

It's not on the drone builder sheet, but QD mentioned it was a thing, to silence the "lay a queen?" debates, so we don't have to ferry drones between planets from the homeworld.
>>

>Place an advanced relay in the pod.
To be doubly clear, each advanced relay can only connect to other advanced relays on your network, so you would need one in your hive to connect all the others to yourself.

Do we not decide the exact breakdown of number of Thinkers per each subject anymore either?

I'd like to try

>Ion thrusters

>Drop Suit
- it unlocks new research (missiles?)

>The study of how various substances interact and influence other life forms has given way to the possibility of developing new and more effective methods of biological manipulation.
And this. At least being able to make humans hallucinate horrible things like the fungus does would be a start.
>>
>>33240809
Crap, I could have sworn I added them to that list.
Somebody actually crashed into a transformer while I was updating that, most of the data was recovered but I guess that little bit was deleted. Either way you are getting the construction bonus from them and I have them in the excel sheet.

>>33240846
Thank you, and same here. It's a blast running this for you guys.

>>33240864
Specifically for the large drone it seems like the closest thing I can think of.

>>33240827
Well that field of research sort of blurs the line between the two. It does what most races do with cybernetics, but with biology, so the term seemed fitting at the time.

>>33240935
I usually assume an even division of thinkers, unless you specify a priority, or one of them is fast enough so that only a few are needed.
>>
>>33237862
This still seems like a good plan.

What's the explanation for why Coil didn't just panic and pilot the ship home though?

I guess we gotta ask Coil what is 'home', and how he ended up working for Lyle.
>>
I want a colossal drone, that carries tons of miniature drones inside of it.

.....for harvesting?
>>
>>33241007
The bigger space ships are already that. You don't need to come up with excuses.

Just build the Docking Pylon.
>>
>>33240990
The engines were still not fully functional. The Slip Drive was fine, but the connections used to control it and the more conventional thrusters were still damaged.

>>33241007
Like, a hollow large drone? Or do you mean a space ship?
>>
>>33240990
Not sure it's worth the risk. Pretending to be Lyle and sending a message might prevent anyone else coming for a while, but if there's a secret code or something we've messed up, we just made the Hel's Angle interesting to pursue.
>>
>Ceph Cloaking Field
Very Slow (Fast with the aid of Coil)
You think you have discovered the components of the ship that permits it to avoid detection. It is a complex system that observes and mimics forms of radiation, neutralizing sound, retaining heat, and bending light around the ship to render it nearly invisible.

So this'll be unlocked next thread?

>>33241047
I meant the explanation within our master ruseman plan to deceive the Broker with the fungus plague story.
>>
>>33241028
I still can't wait till Lee comes back expecting us to be in the stone age, but already colonized that planet and working on the others! "That pocket lighter really helped. Thanks!"

still we need to start looking for expatiation even on the home world.
>>
>>33241054
>Pretending to be Lyle and sending a message
>Lyle
That wasn't what that post said.

It's a ruse that the humans and Lyle are all infected and dying/dead from Cordyceps, and that's why Lyle isn't answering with his secret codes, "Coil" is.

I guess a little bit of truth would work, the engines got damaged and being repaired.
>>
>>33241054
I like the idea of Lyle being incapacitated and Coil having to answer for him.
And because of the possibly infectious nature of the fungus they don't want to fly off and possibly spread the fungus.
>>
>>33241054
Well it's already the stereotype plot hook for almost every alien horror movie ever.

>>33241062
Yes.
>>
>>33241047
>Like, a hollow large drone?
Exactly that. I guess the miniature drones could go out and harvest any organic life in the area to return to the large drone so it could, internally, make more miniature drones, is that viable?
>>
>>33241112
The trouble is, would Lyle or Coil or any of their crew be altruistic enough to quarantine themselves? Would the Broker even believe it?

"Engine damage in fight with locals" would be safer than quarantine, though that's a possibility too.
>>
>>33241131
But what is the end goal?
To make more small drones?
To make an area uninhabitable?
>>
>>33241120
That's why it's so great.
>>
>>33241131
That sounds incredibly nonviable.

And completely pointless.

We don't "harvest any organic life" why the hell would we
>>
>>33240850
Why not just make an improved sniffer for the improved sensing purpose? Why would we need a special drone to use their tech when we can just reverse engineer it and grow are own version or wait and make body snatching parasites?
>>

Not sure why the Broker would give a shit.

>>
>>33241188
>give a shit
The point is to not make it obviously a lie, since he's familiar with Lyle. His shit giving quotient is orthogonal.
>>
>>33241207
How about we not ask for help?
Let's just say that the twins are working on repairs but it is going slowly.
>>
>>33241161
>>33241154
As a weapon to attack organic life forms? In small cramped areas, like cities or space ships. Imagine a humans face when an armada of tiny bugs are swarming down a cramped hallway and eating their friends faces off. If they bring the resources back to the larger drone, they'd be able to replenish their squished ranks.
>>
>>33241182
Having a tech drone might be useful when we start playing with electricity more.

>>33241207
And then the shadowy individuals interested in obtaining samples of a newly found semi-intelligent species are also interested in mind control spores.

>>33241228
I'm still not sure what the point of making excuses to the Broker is. What are people actually trying to accomplish by this? What events are they trying to prevent/encourage?
>>
>>33241246
If you want to swarm them with tiny bugs do that.

Bigger bugs are better at that anyway.

The "have a big one" aspect however is incredibly silly.
>>
>>33241246
You're thinking like a horror movie. There are much more effective ways to destroy cramped environments.
Like the linear whatchamacallit.
>>
Should we build a miniature done that only purpose in life is to burrow into the ground and dies by exploding?
>>
>>33241274
I guess the point is to

- explain Lyle's lack of timely status update
- give the impression that Lyle is still on the mission, if set back a great deal
- the set back was not caused by the cunning or technology of the local sapient race

So I guess, he's infected and incapacitated and they're still trying to revive him, would be the correct cover story.
>>
>>33241274
Prevent more people being sent to our planet and encourage patience in the broker.

I do want to swarm them with tiny bugs, but to keep laying a bunch of tiny bugs just for them to get squished and cost more resources to lay didn't seem like a good idea. So, I thought "Hey, let's make them self-replicate"

That was the whole point of the larger bug, to be able to reproduce more smaller ones.

It's quite powerful, but incredibly bulky. The cyclotron is actually a more advanced form, but you reverse engineered it first and then quickly came up with the more simple, raw power focused version. If the cyclotron is a crowbar, the Linear accelerator is a sledge hammer.
It is also capable of firing a sustained beam, instead of just a bolt since it doesn't need to charge before firing.

Bullshit, if anything you put a dormant feature in the larger drone and then when it comes time to swarm shit, wake the fucker up and it will sustain itself with the resources it acquires.
>>
>>33241592

Why would we want to?

>dormant feature
What are you even talking about?
>>
>>33241592
But why swarm?
>>
>>33241592
Consider the hive to be a scaled-up version of this entire scenario.

The Queen is the mother unit, the worker drones are the miniatures.

They go out and eat things and bring it back to make more of themselves via her.

Only they mostly eat from farms underground because it's easier and not wasting time eating things that are harder to digest.

There. Your idea is implemented. You can stop now.
>>
>>33241486
Pretty sure we're not gonna get that size.

And if we do, I doubt we'd be able to keep all the advanced senses.
>>
>>33241274
But, why build the Sense/tech combo? I can get around having better senses, but why not just build a better sniffer for that? Also, I don't see the point of having a special drone for tech when from what we've seen are workers are capable of handling human tech well.
>>
>>33241516
Hey QD!
I've got some friends who are artists and I'm going to pester them to do some art for this quest.

>>
>>33241679
It's there for electricity Voltage sensing, which no model of drone has so far, and which has useful applications when repairing human technology, or investigating it, or sabotaging it, or doing anything with it.

It could just be a worker drone with voltage legs, if you want to get down to basics.
>>
>>33241679

The sniffer has to fly and be mobile out in the field for patrol, for scouting, for being there as extra eyes-and-ears in battle to help other drones' awareness.

It's useful to have some of those senses, but not all of them, for repair drones. They don't really need a keen sense of smell. They might need to be able to use echolocation in enclosed dark spaces, and they need to be able to detect radiation at the least, if not be able to talk radio waves.
>>
>>33241809
Oh, neat. I like it.
Are those things on the back the antennae? And what's the backpack?
>>
>>33241860
Yeah, the back ones are antennae, and the 'backpack' is part gut, part rucksack I guess. Didn't put much thought except 'MAKE SCULPT FOR QUEEN'
>>
>>33241714
Why not just build single purpose drone's like the Antenna into the hives Infrastructure for at home Senses and then use the sniffer on away issues?
>>
>>33241929
I assume the labs have all sorts of instrumentation built in, but that's of limited use on scavenging operations. It's a pretty small niche to design a drone for though, I'll admit.

Maybe we'll make a hacking drone sometime. Need more tech research.
>>
>>33241929
The point is to have these senses in alien places without Infrastructure, like the Clarke, or when we get to the monitor satellite.

Some of them are also very short range, not like radio senses. Like voltage sensing for repair work, and echolocation for navigation.
>>
>>33241975
The thinkers already handle that I believe.
>>
>>33241996
I can see that point. I just believe having a fly with that ability is more useful as it can use those ability in the locations the land based drone can and the areas it can not.
>>
>>33241885
Oh, so it's the abdomen? Neat, I never imagined it setup like that. Very alien.

The warriors would be more upright, almost like a centaure to give it a better vantage point for combat and its abdomen would be more stubby to help with its balance. Endurance legs would be set like a lizard, with the hips out to the side, while the sprint legs would be set up with the legs more to the front and back.
Four eyes each, two are small, beady ocular eyes set in the front like a jumping spider, and the other two are larger compound eyes set on the sides. Likewise, four digits on each limb curled around a circular wrist. They are slightly reddish due to their diet. Wings are set up with a set of interlocking chitin that has a set of wings that work like propellers and push air against the airfoils. Thinkers would look like big, black lady bugs, but with noodly legs that can't move, but can be plugged into other drones. More like a living laptop.

That's just my take, feel free to experiment with new looks and shapes.
>>
>>33242040
Yeah all we need is a worker to plug in the Space USB port and the Thinkers can roll to hack.

After Theseus teaches us human computers anyway.
>>
I'd like to get ion thrusters sometime soon so that we can make a feasible large drone troop transport. Shuttles are fine and all, but not really suited to combat operations.

Of course, I guess we could use paratroopers and not bother with field landing capabilities.
>>
>>33242092
Thinkers are... moe.
>>
>>33242089
I don't see much need for flight in the enclosed spaces that technology happens in, on ships, in satellites, in bases...
>>
>>33242113
I should warn you that you still won't be all that proficient at hacking. It's like the polar opposite of your natural instincts, so it would be quite difficult.

You can sort through a genome in an afternoon, but sending an email is a big deal, essentially.
>>
>>33242174
We need to kidnap some human's tech-savy child to help us take over the universe.
>>
>>33242191
I wonder if Lee has kids...
>>
>>33242174
>You can sort through a genome in an afternoon, but sending an email is a big deal, essentially.
That's pretty kawaii.

Okay, good. We need Theseus as an ally if we want to do the advanced stuff. It's in our mutual interest to keep the Union blind.
>>
>>33242216
Yeah, "Ally." Ehehehehe!
>>
>>33242203
Not ones he knows, probably! The life of a spaceman is an adventurous one.
>>
>>33242143
I don't see much need for it being a land based creature.
>>
>>33242336
There's a complexity maximum per drone, and wings cost extra nutrients for no benefit for something that works indoors, rather than traveling around at high speed.
>>
>>33241809
It's like an unholy mix of insect, centaur, and RC car!

>>33242174
How is it against our natural instincts? Would we have an easier time building/stealing a computer and getting a worker to hunch over it going tap tap tap instead of mind interfacing?
>>
>>33242384
>RC car
oh man, now I'm picturing workers scuttling to and fro, saying 'vrooooom' like autistic kids while they zip away.
>>
>>33242384
I mean that the way the computer is designed it would feel unintuitive and obtuse to try and navigate it, like trying to tell your grandpa that to turn off the computer you click the start button. The same reason Theseus can't hack into your network with the link, the most damage he can do is cause a mild headache, but that's essentially just making a vuvuzela sound in your ear.

Either way, you can still hack, you just won't be all that great at it.
>>
>>33242376
What's the complexity maximum per drone? because it be nice to no the limit for designs.
>>
>>33242492
>>33242376
Not really a max, it just gets more expensive and bulky until it becomes unfeasible to make a lot of them.
>>
>>33242514
I thought you said that shoving enough things into one drone making it more and more complex would cause potential genetic errors, and we'd have to roll for not having deformed children when they hatched or something.
>>
Oh god, now I can't stop imagining that our race is just space-insect-instead-of-flamboyant-lobster space pirates.

TUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUBEEEEESSSSSSSSSS
>>
>>33242572
>lobster
Well, we are really more like big crustaceans....
>>
>>33242528
I was still trying to figure out a good way of doing drone design and thought that was a good way of keeping things from getting crunch heavy. The way things are set up now seems pretty balanced at the moment.
I try to keep the crunch as simple as possible while still being able to facilitate cool biological shenanigans.
>>
>>33242483
Ah. I see. That makes sense.

What's the living thing:machine ratio of our shuttles, pods, and spaceships?
>>
>>33242636
Spaceships are actually set up like a Man-o-war. It's a bunch of drones linked together to form a single function. It's all biology, but with some metal reinforcing to keep the more dangerous parts contained, like power generators, while weapons are mostly machine like the grafts, but bigger.

Query:

have you prepared new regions of this planet for us to explore and find new stuff to sample yet?

Like those badlands east of the Clarke mountain range.
>>
>>33242514
So this is completely workable?:

Improved Sniffer
Olfactory: Advanced 2
Acoustic: Advanced 2
Psionic: Basic 0
Radio: Advanced 6N 3M
EM: Advanced 3N 2M
Mandible: None 0
Blade: None 0
Arms: Dex 1
Legs: Endurance 1
Carapace: Basic 0
Wings: Medium 2
Acid glands: 1
Size: Medium
Cost: 18N 5M
Upkeep: 9N

Hey, next time we talk to him, we really ought to find out from Coil...

- where he got the Void Shards
- his people's history with the shards
- how he came to work for Lyle

Also, it's worth considering this is a Ceph who works for a human, so he's a little atypical at least, and not xenophobic. There's a good possibility others will be much more xenophobic, and thus interpret out tachyon talent more heretically.
>>
>>33242686
not on the map, not yet, but don't let that stop you. The badlands are actually southwards, towards the equator.
