>Year 484 of the Raschan Calendar

Ten years ago you lost her, Carna, who chased the evening birds. Now ten years later, her demon within devours them.

You awaken to the noon sun, in your bed of your room in Deneb. The cold season still leaves bits of frost on your window sill but the green is peaking through the snow already. Everything is as it should be, as you'd left it before your mission. You haven't met your friends yet since your return in the dead of night as expected, but their distant voices in the lobby reassure you that they've all returned fine.
Likely better than yourself. Certainly better than him.

You get yourself dressed and wipe your face down with a loose cloth. You haven't had the chance to bathe yet but you could at least do a bare minimum to make yourself presentable. You're not at your best.
It sounds like they're starting to scatter. Maybe they don't know that you've returned, maybe they'd rather not bother you while you rest up. Do they know about Anlak yet? If you leave it alone and nobody asks you're sure the teachers will fill them in but... maybe it'd be best if you told them personally.
Maybe it'd be for the best to let them part first and get some personal business out of the way first. Maybe you should go catch them while they're still in a group. Maybe you could try to find one of them alone to gather your thoughts together.

You'll have to talk to them sooner or later, but for now...

No point wasting time on this. They deserve to know. He might not have exactly been a friend to them but he was one of your peers. You leave your room and walk fast to catch them...

...You've told them of The Little Witch, as well as the demon Frangelico that works with her; that Anlak fought to save you and the Black Cats, that he died in order to let the rest of you survive.
The air stands still. It's hard to breathe. Leona holds her head low, she clutches her hands to her long braid. Rein wraps herself tightly in her arms, she looks composed but you know the girl doesn't deal with death well. Sheryl's calm gaze is on you, you haven't mentioned Carna's name or your personal involvement in things, you haven't mentioned Sissel yet; she's probably expecting answers later. Yu'yen grits his teeth, his fists are clenched and drawing red to his hands. He's about to open his mouth when...

"Let's mourn Anlak's loss a little later. He did what he could and... as little as I knew him, I'm sure he's not the sort to want us to cry." Sheryl breaks the silence. "I'm sure he's hurt more than we are," She says, gesturing your way, "So I think we should give him some time to think it over."

Yu'yen closes his lips and nods twice before responding, "Yeah. For now we have a day off and we're all back together... I'm going to take a walk down to Ragamuffin and get myself a drink." Yu'yen turns towards the door.

"I'm going to go for a stroll then." Rein says, making for her leave as well.

"Oh! I'll come with you."

"I think I want to be alone for a bit." Rein dismisses her sister, with a strained smile.

"Ah... I guess I'll go look for a book then..." Leona shakes her head.

"Do you want to talk this over alone?" Sheryl whispers to you while Leona has her back turned.

Maybe you should tell everyone all of the story before they go. You don't know how they'd take it though. It might be better to talk to Sheryl first... it might be better not to talk at all.

Yes
>>

I'd rather tell Sheryl about Sissel, take a shower, then see if Rein is OK. She's the only person in the group that actually knew Anlak.

M-Me too
>>
>>33279158
Sounds reasonable
>>
You shouldn't get the others involved now. Not yet at least. You can't risk happening to them what happened to Anlak.

"Alright, let's talk then." You whisper back to Sheryl, and the two of you wait as Leona scurries back into.

"Walk with me." Sheryl tugs on the cuff of your sleeve lightly while stepping on ahead. "I need to walk Chance."

It's still well into the Winter season, though it's warmer than when you left. Chance has grown a noticeable little since you last saw him, and his winter coat adds an extra inch on top of that. Sheryl nuzzles her face in her scarf before taking the dog's leash. "So, your Carna took off with Anlak's life?"

"It was her demon. You're awfully calm about this."

"I'm being calm so that you don't have to." Sheryl's ears droop, drawing a straight line between them, "About my brother though..."

"The Seeker's brought him in on a different returning caravan." You don't know if he arrived before you or after.

"I see." She doesn't sound particularly happy nor particularly upset. "I suppose I'll have to ask Masoch if I can pay him a visit... do you want to come along?"

"Can we?"

"We'll know after we ask him. If you haven't given up on that girl after what she did then perhaps Arra- Sissel knows something that could aid you."

Carna didn't do it. Frangelico did. You think to yourself unsure.

"You need to make up your mind though." Sheryl's face is covered in woolen pattern but a soft streak of red climbs to her ears. Her volume drops, "I heard about Rein after-all."

I'm surprised you didn't kill anyone off. Yu'yen would likely survive to maintain gender balance, and Rein would survive because she's the only one who really knew Anlak, but Leona and Sheryl were up on the chopping block. Leona especially if you were the kind of writer that maximizes SUFFERRING.

>>33279674
Sissel isn't likely to be much help, at least not with our interference. Go to Masoch.
>>
>>33279674
Go with her to see Masoch. We really should talk to Rein sometime though

I normally prefer not to chatter mid-session but I think it's fair for me to say since I've mentioned it before that I operate on classical tragedy rules. No deaths you can't foresee and stop. Kill as few people as possible but try to get the most out of each one.
>>
"I know."

Sheryl ties Chance up outside the entrance to The Seeker's Archives, giving him a rub behind the ears before entering. The familiar old lady up front raises a brow at the two of you before returning to whatever fiction she's reading today. Sheryl pulls up one of the chairs at the side and gestures for you to sit. "Just keep your mind on following me." She says as she takes a seat in another one herself.
Within moments the two of you are riding, the wooden legs of your furnished steeds kicking their feet, and bending their knees; and carrying you through the halls...

You're dumped off in front of a door. In the middle of the hallway you slide down on your feet. Sheryl gets off of her chair with about as much elegance as you can expect from someone standing up from a seat.

"We're here." She says as if you didn't know. Knocking twice on the door. "It's Sheryl." She calls, sounding like she's done this before.

The door opens into the hallway with the elf girl taking a step back. You can see a shallow shadowed stretchy hand pulling back from the handle.

"Oh? Two of you today?" You catch Masoch's attention as you enter his office. Bookshelves on all sides as you expected, save for the one liquor cabinet placed inbetween them. The taint of his body has crept just above the collar of his shirt, drawing purple-black lines on his neck. He seems to be doing paperwork.

"I was told my brother has been captured." Sheryl cuts straight to the point. "I would like to request permission for the two of us to see him."

"Why both of you?"

Sheryl doesn't answer Masoch. He sighs and and pulls a slip of paper out between some files before scribbling down on it with a quill. "How are your efforts on the notes?" He asks Sheryl.

"Slow but... I think I'll understand something by the next turn of the moon." You're unclear on what the two are talking about.

"Is that all?" Masoch says, turning his attention back your way.

>What do you do?
>>
>>33280365
Ask him what he knows of Frangelico
>>
>>33280365
Full disclosure. There's no reason for the Seekers to be against us now, really.

Unless someone has a really GOOD reason that I forgot and we can avoid the next catastrophe.
>>
>>33280365
>"Is that all?"
I'm not an elf. My heart was replaced by a demon. It stayed there for 10 years because it'll die if it leaves. It tried to make a contract with me but I said no.

Ask Sheryl about the "notes" after we leave.
>>
"Do you know anything about Rasci, Masoch?"

"I'd have to know a few things in my position." He was a teacher, a Seeker and a contractor.

"Do you know anything about a Rasci named Frangelico?"

"Frangelico hm...? That was the name of the Rasci in Kran's mission report." Masoch motions a hand to one of the paper stacks on his desk, the pages lift into the air leaving not centimetres between them before a sheet flies between his fingers where he catches it. "Not the first time I've heard the name, no. It's popped up before in the the records."

"I'm not an elf, Masoch." You say, "I lost my heart ten years ago, and a demon took its place."

Masoch pauses, he leans back in his chair setting down the paper in front of him.

"Both the demon that the Little Witch... that Carna holds and the demon within me are Frangelico."

"Are you sure you want to tell me that? Our goal is to hunt hers but yours may do as well." He sounds calm, not surprised. "You don't get anything out of telling me this do you?"

"I don't need a reason for you to be against me later. I'm being honest with you so you can be honest with me."

"...I'll see what I can dig up on that demon. Leave at your own pace." Masoch's lips curve up just barely. He slides the paper he was writing on forward where Sheryl plucks it, and begins to give the other file another look over...

"That was a surprise." Sheryl says, the two of you making distance down the hall.

"I decided it was the best course of action." Things aren't going to get any easier if you just sit and wait right now. "Say, what were those notes Masoch mentioned?"

"I found some notes that my father Shanan kept out west where I was sent... it was close to my old home." Sheryl takes off her beret, clutching down on it. "I'm not sure what they're about yet but they're probably related to his... changes."

>CONT
>>
"Masoch decided on our groupings and our missions. I can't imagine it was all coincidental... but I trust he has his reasons." She shifts the gaze of her sharp jade eyes to you, "Whatever they are though, I certainly hope Anlak's fate wasn't a part of it."

"And the paper he gave you?"

"Permission to see Sissel. He's being kept on a higher level of The Archives, they've never let us off ground floor have they? We can go as long as we have a teacher accompanying us. Since he didn't come with us right then I imagine we'll need to find Kita, Kran or Silvest. I don't think we should go right now, but if you really want to then I'll follow your lead. Rather though, let's meet up after the sun has set so that we don't worry the others?"

Sheryl might be wanting some time to think this over once more herself. It'd save you some hassle to see Sissel while you're still here if you are to see him at all but you could get plenty done in the meanwhile if you waited.
Perhaps talk to one of the others? Home some skills? Get some personal work done?

"I'll talk to you later then." You part way with Sheryl outside of The Archives and head to find Rein. You'd like to clean up a bit more first but the bathhouse is a ways away and it'd take you a good hour at least to pay it a visit and come back to find her. She's probably hovering around here...

A stroll around the snow-dusted gardens brings you to the lonely woman. She sits on the benches out on a quiet side watching the snow melt against the creeping grass.

"Hey." You call out, alerting her to your presence.

"Hey." Rein says. You take a seat beside her, stealing a quick glance of her blue eyes. She hasn't shed tears.

"I wrote you a letter but I didn't end up sending it." The job was over before you had the need to.

"Well, we're here toge- by each other now."

"How're you holding up?" You can touch on the issue of you, her, and Carna later.

She gives you a smile and flexes an arm.

"I thought you might be taking it harder. The two of you were good friends after-all."

"We're all good friends." She brings her arm back, brushing hair off her unblemished ear. "I'm sad to see someone go, but I guess this is the business we're in right? I thought at first that things were a lot easier outside of Belgrand's cold but I guess it's the world that's unkind rather than the country."

"What's it like there again?"

"They put you into training real young there. Leona and I were taken care of nicely due to our status but sometimes you aren't so lucky." Her elbow goes to her lap and her chin to her palm. "I guess Anlak wasn't so lucky huh?"

You're not sure what to say.

"Sorry, that was insensitive... I wish he were here but, I'm thankful that you made it back safely."

"Isn't she cute? Don't let her know you got him killed." Frangelico's voice slides into your head. It's the first thing he's said all day.
Ignoring him, you should probably...

"How was your mission?" You change tracks, you didn't get the chance to ask Sheryl earlier.

"We went out with Silvest near The Sevens. Digging up pirate gold for some reason? Stayed in a little port town, but it was noisier than Ridaela! We located the treasure down to a cave but for one reason or another some blue demon decided to make home inside of the chest. We had to fight our way out against skeletons." Rein pauses, "It was actually pretty boring though. We spent most of our time researching for the treasure and talking to the locals." It seems that Sheryl hadn't let Rein in on those notes, wherever she found them. "What about your job...? I mean, if I won't bother you."

"We arrived in town, I met a friend there actually, a good fellow. Travelled to an estate and fought him and this giant spider."

"You fought your friend?"

"We didn't hurt each other." You reassure her, "Got some records. Met some Black Cats. And then we went to see The Little Witch..."

Rein closes her eyes and nods. She knows how the story ends already.

"Sorry, that wasn't all of it..." You decide to tell her the whole truth, she deserves that much doesn't she? "Do you remember the pains in my heart?"

She nods again.

"There's a demon inside of me. His name is Frangelico... his and Carna's demon."

Rein looks to you confused and caught on the names. After a moment her hand covers her mouth, and after another she turns her gaze to the ground with her eyes wide.

"I met her. She's changed... her demon killed Anlak."

The two of you stay seated until the Winter's sun starts its early descent. Eventually she moves, placing a cold hand over-top of yours wordlessly...

"Should we get something to eat?" You let her hold your hand, despite the faint snickering you hear echoing inside your mind.

"Sure..."

"Why don't you make something? I haven't had your cooking in awhile." Rein looks lovely as usual, it'd be a bit embarrassing to accompany her out in your state and a bit more so to make her wait for you. More than that, you do enjoy her food a lot.

"Alright." She answers, but she doesn't make any effort to move. Some a little bit longer, the two of you sit there in each others company...

There's a little feast in front of you. Seafood arranged with the pride of a chef and cooked with the care of a mother, little trays of sauce and side-dishes cutely cut. You end up seated across each other in the cafeteria, hardly romantic but... maybe romantic isn't the atmosphere you should set. You've had her cooking before but she's gone the extra mile today as your personal chef.

It's quaint little small chat between you two as you eat. Just mentions and wonders of and about the others, the goings-on of the continent and whatever pops into mind. It's calming, and Frangelico seems to have decided to let you go ahead. Eventually your dinner ends uninterrupted.

"Here, show me your hands." Rein grabs a hold of your palm, nudging the plates between you out of the way.

"What for?" You ask not resisting.

"I'm going to teach you a weave. You keep getting in trouble and I know I can't keep you out of it, so I might as well help you as best I can." She guides your fingers. It's not an effective teaching method but you've hardly the heart to say no after that dinner. Pluck your index to your thumb, and weave it like a stitch... you're not familiar with the spell. "If you wound your body, do this and you'll feel better."

"A healing weave?"

"Yeah... and if your heart is wounded... just think of me, alright?" She looks away embarrassed at her own words. You're about to speak when she winds you in the chest.

You peek over to the cafeteria entrance, where a head ducks out of sight as soon as you spot it. Had to have been a fellow student. You're fairly certain it was...

It must've been Leona peeking in. You still haven't really talked to her since you returned but she's the least of your worries right now.
"I'll help you clean up." You tell Rein.

"You really don't have to." She says, starting to gather the plates.

"I want to. It's the least I could do." You steal away one of the bowls while she reaches for it, and she quickly relents to letting you help with the rest...

"Is this what a marriage is like?" Rein nudges you in the kitchen, as you clean up the dirty dishes in a soapy basin. "I cook dinner, and then we argue about who cleans up."

"I suppose so." Your parents were like that weren't they. She is using some pretty personal pronouns though. Neither of you talk much past that, focusing on your chores. With two people on it you finish up quickly, and go to dry your hands on a cloth before you meet Sheryl.

"Hey, that demon... Frangelico was it?" Rein catches you before you pass the door.

"Yes?"

"He's inside of you but... it's not a contract yet is it?"

"He asked for one. I told him no." You already walk a thin line with him, but you aren't ready to hand over to him your life.

"Hm... is that so." Rein nods, "Still, I think elf children are cute."

...you spot Sheryl in front of The Archives, she's catching her breath in her hands. The night is still cold and it'll stay cold for some time still, it seems that she's enjoying the Winter while it's here though.

Beside her is one of your teachers, who she must've gotten while the two of you were parted.

You start walking to greet the two, but a few ideas crop up in your mind. Kita ganders over at you, with pipe in his mouth, and smoke out his pipe. Convincing him to come out here must've been a lot of work for Sheryl, but you've come to deliver her reward.

You step forward as you weave a cold zone in front of you, freezing the melting snow into a layer of ice on the grass top. With your first step on it you begin sliding towards the distracted Sheryl. Stretching your arms out as you home in on her you slide your cold hands onto her neck. The girl jumps and lets out a quiet peep, not as grandiose a reaction as you hoping for.
When Sheryl lands she lowers down on one knee and twists her small frame, swinging a leg back. You step back to avoid the blow but-
Ice. You slip on your own creation and fall on your back, sliding back on it until your hair touches to into the frosted grass at the start of your trail.

Well, at least you did well enough to catch her off-guard.

"Hound's breath! What're you doing!?" Sheryl yells at you annoyed. Kita nods and gives you a thumbs up.

"I thought it'd be funny." Your head feels a little dulled.

"I thought it was funny." Kita smirks, tapping his pipe empty before leading you in...

The second floor of The Archive like the first is lined with books in every hall, but the atmosphere isn't half as inviting. The walk is still lit with the lantern stones you're used to but they're spaced out further leaving darkened spaces between them. Sheryl doesn't make any conversation.

"They're keeping that fellow on the third floor I believe?" Kita says unsure.

"Why is the second floor locked off?" You ask him.

"The papers up here aren't meant for the public. There're valuable originals, blackmail, history forgotten and all sorts forbidden things." Kita shrugs, "I don't really know anything about it. I mostly just read for fun."

"Then the third floor?"

"We keep demons vaulted there. You remember our little trip to Belgrand right? Whole floor is runed up."

>CONT
>>
The third floor houses narrow hallways and cold walls. Gone are the rows among rows of bookcases that hide The Seeker's dark-side. Instead each room you pass through is hidden behind steeled doors with glowing symbols drawn into them as well as Raschan numbers on each centre.

"Little lesson on magic. Weavers who've seen death can pull strands from the air and stick them into things. That's how you get those faerie blades from the books and those teapots that're always warm." Kita nods, "Gods, I love those teapots. I want one for my birthday."

"Where is Sissel being kept?" Sheryl taps on Kita's shoulder, bringing him back to the two of you.

"Ah, we're riiiight about... here." Kita stops, in front of one of the numbered doors.

"How do you know it's this one?"

"The markings are weaved into the doors, but it may be awhile yet before you see them." He says to Sheryl before unlocking the door and letting her enter. You follow shortly behind, your teacher waits outside.

You see Sissel as soon as you step through. He's suspended up against a wall by gold chains on each wrist keeping him lifted and gold chains on each foot making his legs spread. They didn't bother changing his outfit when they brought him in here, but his fight with Anlak has left him with bruises on his bodies and cuts on his clothes. Likely by fortune of his demon his cuts have closed nicely.

"Brother..." Sheryl mutters seeing him. His violet eyes open, meeting with hers. He smiles, but he doesn't say anything.

Sheryl looks over to you, and gives you a nod. "You must have something to talk about, so you go ahead first... I'll likely end up taking much longer."

Shit... I can't think of any good questions that he would have the answer to...

How did you meet Carna?
>>
>>33285420
How was the revenant made? Is it a part of Frangelicos power? What are Carna and Frangelico planning?
>>
"How'd you meet her." You're really at a loss for questions, might as well start from the beginning.

"...I suppose you might as well know." Sissel speaks calmly now, unlike most of your encounters with him. "It was shortly after I'd left the family to try and find work. There isn't much to it, I travelled from town to town doing what they would let an elf do, until brigands accosted me on the roads. I thought myself dead, and then she came. Carna, an angel on blackened wings... she ate them all, but she let me live. I suppose I had my youth to thank, it's been almost ten years since then."

That would've been a year after you lost her wouldn't it have. It's almost eleven years since you first lost her now.

"Carna's father... that reven-."

"It was Frangelico that gave her that power. She devours the body and she spits it back up. Sometimes they've nearly their whole head about them--usually we stick a small demon inside to maintain control."

"What is Carna planning?" You ask him.

"Nothing." He says, "That girl is planning nothing. She simply moves so that she can live. She simply runs to evade those that would harm her--those she would harm if she lost to her demon."

"You're awfully helpful aren't you, brother?" Sheryl cuts in, it seems the blood shared has made her no less suspicious of him.

"You must understand, I love her. I've loved her for near ten years now... you know don't you?" He meets your eyes with a dying gaze. "For ten years I've watched her. For ten years I have followed her hand. I have watched her change from woman to monster... I am- was her protector and to be her executioner on the day there was no girl to protect any longer..." His eyes sharpen, his brows furl, "And for ten years she has waited. Not once could I touch her, not her hand nor her heart. Because for ten years she has waited for you."

Your questions out of the way, Sissel turns his attention to Sheryl, leaving you to your thoughts.

"Sissel. You met with father didn't you. What happened?"

"We met and we talked, he was already so far gone when I saw him. But still he was happy to see me, as fathers ought to be. He knew he had not long left, and so he wished to see you one last time."

"And so you found me in Deneb, and you directed him here."

"It is as you suspect. It was I that sent to you demons, and then sent you his way." The two exchange words, but you only vaguely understand.

"And to what end was that for?"

"That I might kill him." Sissel smiles, looking your way. "But I failed, and I have accepted that. I cannot best him, I could not even best the Daktori with my weaves and my demon. I cannot best Frangelico. I cannot save Carna."

"If you wished to kill him you needn't have used father as a scapegoat." Sheryl's ears droop, she shakes her head.

"That was half my goal, the other was to make father reveal his notes... he was researching demons, a way that he might remove the taint of his contract. As he described it was only failure--like father like son I suppose--but that there was hope to save the girl was reason enough for me. It was a lunatics hope but I am far mad already."

"...is that so." Sheryl turns to you, "I'd like to talk to him more in private, if you would leave us alone, could you?"

You nod, and you take your exit...

And so life goes on.

It's oveeeeer. Blahblahblah.

Sorry, slow session today. Part cool-down and part me being really out of it. I've had a really busy week and it's going to continue that way from the looks at it.

The ending was pretty abrupt but I've got a bit of a headache and I figure anything that follows can be dealt with next time we convene here. Plus I think there're only like, 2 posters and 3 lurkers here right now.

I'm quickly becoming apologist QM. I should do something about that. At any rate, my energy is coming and going all over the place and neither the vodka nor tobacco in me are agreeing with my body so I'm going to lay down for a bit. Thank you very much for playing as usual.

I didn't this post in this one and have been a regular since the first thread. I have some stuff going on irl that has greatly diminished my appetite for tragedy for the time being, but will be back in weeks to come. I hope you continue, this quest has more pathos than anything I've read here.

Well I'm abroad on a vacation, so I can't really post.

Healing taint is something we leave to Masoch. There's nothing we could do to help him research that faster, and there's no point risking the attempt while Frangelico's still got Carna. We deal with Frangelico, and take Carna to Masoch as fast as possible(That is, if we don't just kill her)

As for ourselves, the only reason we haven't contracted is to maintain bargaining chips with Frangelico. We deal with him, we can contract no problem.

For the Seekers, we just give them Carna's Fran. So the end of it all is still: how the FUCK do we separate them?

We need to play with Frangelico's wish for tragedy, while getting Carna to trust us enough to actually do it. That plan evidently failed last time, so feel free to call me out on this.

Don't worry, I know there's a pretty decent total reader count and I'd have to drop a lot lower than this to be discouraged. I'm not going to drop this when we've come this far along. Good luck getting past those misfortunes though.
