You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

A light sways back and forth in the dark. But it’s not a light, it’s a sound. It’s a thought. Slowly, you find yourself able to focus on it, splitting it into thoughts, plural. And that’s when you begin to become aware of yourself – your fingertips and toes, then your arms, then everything else, consciousness soaking into you as if by cosmic osmosis.

You open your eyes and the light unfurls into crisp, clear shapes. Old, rotten floorboards stretch out to one side, lit by the pale grey of morning. The roof over your head is mostly sky, a few vestiges of wood and plaster drooping awkwardly against the clouds, as if weighed down by them. You’re alive.

Shifting, you feel at the sore flesh at the base of your back, near your spine. Still stings a little, but the skin is as smooth and unspoiled as you ever remember it being. Nearby, something moves, and for a moment you feel your claws digging through soft distal flesh. Laura looks up at you, huddled in the far corner of the room, legs drawn in close. She says nothing.

Slowly, your head pounding, you push yourself up onto your knees.

You cringe a little at the touch of the light. Head’s like tar.

Glancing about, you don’t recognize your surroundings in the least. It’s certainly not your cozy little subterranean den, though it is similarly sparse.

“…Where are we?” You mumble.

Laura looks away from you.

“The edge of the Exclusion Zone.” She answers, eventually. “I had to stabilize you. The bullet caused major fracturing along the base of your spine. Without the ability to heal, you would have been paralyzed from the waist down.”

You gulp nervously. Yikes.

A minute or two of awkward silence passes as you re-orientate yourself to consciousness, and you get the very striking impression that the question on the verge of your brain is hanging over Laura’s shoulders as well. Might as well be out with it.

“Laura…” You pause, not entirely sure how to continue. “…What happened there? To you, I mean.”

Her heartbeat swings back and forth beneath the ensuing silence. At long last, she opens her mouth, still staring straight at the opposite wall.

“A control mechanism. It’s…” Her hands tighten over her knees, bones creaking just very slightly. “Something designed for target priority purposes. I smell the scent, and I can no longer control myself.”

You shift uncomfortably. There are plenty of things you’d like to say, but you’re not sure how to form them. You knew it had to be something like that – you knew her eyes weren’t her own, that something in that gas they sprayed you with had supplanted all the humanity from her brain. You feel like you should say that, that you knew it wasn’t really her, but you can’t put it together.

Instead, you get up and trudge toward her. She glances up at you, her eyes gleaming with something vaguely like panic, and you feel the tendons snap taut throughout her form, her entire posture becoming stiff with readiness.

You stop. Guess she’s not really feeling up to any kind of contact. Slowly, you sit down beside her, and just think for a moment.

“You alright?”

The words tumble out. She nods slowly.

“I am unharmed.”

Gradually, her shoulders untighten, the change cascading through her from the top down, nerves disentangling and muscles flattening, her whole form unraveling into something a little more at ease. The minutes pass and you let them stumble by in silence. There’s nothing more to say that you remotely trust yourself with.

And it’s not like you’re a likely source of advice. You can barely control yourself sometimes. Less and less, these days.

You check your watch.

“Dammit.” You mutter, disturbing the silence. “Lucas. Where’s Lucas?”

You remember very little after Jerry – yeah, you remember that sour ass grape’s name, that guy can get fucked by all the ugly trees in the garden of life – shot you in the back, but you know there was an explosion. One large and furious enough to send smoke billowing up over the whole neighbourhood, cutting the stars from view and roiling with flecks of lingering heat.

You can’t believe you actually let Lucas get involved in that.

For the first time since she got to explaining her situation, Laura turns her eyes toward you.

“I’ve been in contact with the Hellions.” She states, pausing momentarily before going on: “He’s with them.”

You sigh. Excellent company, that.

Though… after what you saw last night… maybe you could do with all the company you can get. Maybe every mutant in NY could.

“Guess we need to pick him up.”

You heave yourself up, extending a hand to Laura. She examines it almost suspiciously, as if it might bite her, before weaving her fingers through yours. Her pulse is like a warm, steady drumbeat.

The clouds roil back a little as you head on through the Scar, the grey receding somewhat into a dull mesh of understated blue. Winter is slowly loosening its grip on the world, allowing the sky some of its colour back, and walking about under the breaking light of day makes you feel a little better, clearing your head somewhat and putting a new spring in your step.

>photosynthetic charge +1

You distract yourself a little while with the contents of your phone, but find your spirits dampening somewhat when you realize you have five unread messages from UNKNOWN. The foul, rotten smell of the underground chamber returns to you, stewing like a bad meal in the pit of your stomach, and you quickly move on. You have a message from Peter, too, and something from the Blonde Phantom.

Peter’s text is short and simple. Apparently he did a bit of reading on ‘Joshua Green’ and trawled up some weirdness (about what you expected, that). The message from the Phantom, on the other hand, is a long, profusely apologetic wall of text – it would seem than Mr. Soames contact her sometime last night. You shrug a little, coaxing the tension out of your shoulders, and stow your phone back away.
>>
>(2/2)

You glance down at Laura. She marches alongside you in deep, sullen silence.

“So…” You falter a bit as her eyes flick toward you. “…Why does that scent affect you so badly? Is it your sense of smell?”

She shakes her head.

“Psychological conditioning. My subconscious associates it with…” She pauses, and turns away, the familiar look of being mired in memory coming over her. “…many things.”

You think you can fill in the rest with guesswork.

Soon enough, you find yourself on the Groves, a bunch of hoodied kids watching you suspiciously from the opposite estate. You ignore them and make your way to the door to the Hellions’ block, though you do find yourself wondering just how much of the local game Julian actually has his fingers in.

Taking a moment to text back to the Phantom that you’ll be stopping by later (you neglect to mention super duper large amounts of compensation, but hope it’s implicit), you rip the handle, and the lock, straight off the door. Laura stares up at you in questioning silence.

“I just get tired of waiting for them.” You explain, and head up the stairs to the age-mottled door you recognize as belonging to the Hellions. This one you don’t sabotage. Like it or not, the Hellions are probably best uncrossed.

You rap at the sodden wood with your knuckles, rolling your eyes when a quiet scuffle seems to break out behind the door. Eventually, it creaks open, and a pair of bright orange eyes stare out at you, narrowing slightly when they turn toward Laura.

“She’s fine now.” You explain quickly. “I hear our friend’s with you.”

What was this one’s name? Solell? Solero? Sol-something. She looks like she could kill you with that stare.

She mutters something in Spanish and opens the door. Inside, Lucas and Julian both turn to look at you, both of them tearing their eyes away from the flickering light of a television. Curtains are drawn, you notice, and the whole place smells vaguely of burnt iron. You can hear at least one other person in another room, probably the kitchen.

“Man, you’re alright!” Lucas throws himself off his seat and approaches, looking relieved. “When Laura said you’d been shot, I thought… I dunno, I thought that might be the last I’d be seein’ of you.”

You smile faintly.

“I’m surprisingly durable.”

We don't have the flamebreath needed yet. As it is, we're at "Leaky Radiator" heat level.
I'd suggest Claws 2 + Super STRONG to burrow in, then dig around or taserhands the insides.
>>
>>33359662
fastball special Laura up to the head.
>>
>>33359662
We trow a fucking car at it. We strong now.
Also we can probably rip it apart. Trowing car is just better idea.
How much sentinel weights anyway? We can probably trip/trow it, and then bash head in with rock/car/tear it off.

Also we shuld start using passive search more. Use the senses we invested in. Find some nickles, and maybe a shield. or a weapon. Must be someone nearby that threw away perfectly usable knife, metal mug, or cloth. Maybe dirty tablecloth, or blanket with hole in it.
>>
>>33359763
Our taser hands is not at a level where it can blow electronics up.
>>
>>33359662

Here's a better idea: leave the "destroying giant robots" to the big guns while JJ focuses on keeping himself and his friends out of the line of fire.

Stealth character, remember?
>>
>>33359662

>>
>>33359800
All good men must fight at some point.
>>
>>33359796
Inside a robot it could probably short out stuff. Outside, likely not. Hence the step 1 being "burrow in with claws and strength".
>>
>>33359688
Sentinels can take Semi trucks to the face. You're going to need to do better than manhole cover.

>>33359701
I don't remember spiderman ripping ones head off. I think JJ will need another level in Claws before we'll be able to decapitate one.

>>33359709
If you actually read the DB power description you would know that DB would need to be at least level 4 to hurt a Sentinel.

>>33359726
If you're already tunneling through it, why would you need flame? Just super strength 3 and claws 2 would be enough.

We can invisidrop Ms electric shock, or Ms adamantine claws behind it.

We need a shield from AOE attacks, or healing vitae, for when our allies get hit by bullets or some shit.

Why you people don't want shield, or healing potions?
>>
>>33359615
Fifthing. More then that, we need to tell the Young X-Men, the Corsairs, Peter Parker at the Bugle, or anyone else that will listen. They sent fifty trained killers to stop us, one mutant assassin, and a scent that would compromise our ally.

They do NOT want this secret out, which means we spread that shit like wildfire even if it's only partially true or not true at all. Keeps muggas off the Jack, and adds another layer to the whole smuggling snafu way back when
>>
>>33359833
No.

Level 1 is taser. Level 2 can short out electronics.
>>
>>33359834
Well, manhole discus might work really nicely given our strength level, the surface area it would focus into, and geometric vision aim.

>[X] Talk about what was under the complex.

Glancing over Lucas’ shoulder, you shoot Julian what you assume is a meaningful look.

“We need to talk.”

He regards you in cocksure silence, before nodding and motioning to the overstuffed chair opposite his seat. The girl closes the door behind you, and you’re certain you feel the temperature sneak up a few notches.

“I’ll stand.” You like having the option of running. Not like that door is gonna get in your way.

“Alright.” He seems to find that very funny, for some reason. “What’s this about?”

And so, you tell him what you found down there, in the rancid dark. You watch his expression change toward one of indignant, disbelieving horror as you describe the steady blinking of the machines, the precise, surgical insertion of all those wires and tubes, the unnatural twisting and warping of flesh. He stops you once or twice, asking you to go over certain details, as if trying to imprint them on his brain, make them visual and real for him.

When you’re done, he’s quiet for a good long time.

“That explains the news, then.” You blink. What news? “When they said Mutant Control had gotten involved, I assumed you’d gotten your dumb ass caught on the scene.”

His pulse is erratic. He’s angry. He’s legitimately angry.

“If the other crime families want to get in on this…” He pauses, as if piecing something together in his head. “…They’re going to need a lot of mutants, aren’t they? Hundreds. Thousands, if they all want to compete.”

A sick, uncomfortable feeling settles in your stomach.

From Crusty himself;

Level 1: Like having a taser in your palm. Won't short out most electronics but will fuck with people. Can be conducted.

Level 2: Visible electrical arcs. Much stronger current, enough to cause people to smoke a bit after some touching. Will short out unarmoured electronics.

Level 3: Way higher voltage. Will seriously electrocute motherfuckers. Will damage armoured electronics.

Level 4: Will melt steel when concenrated. You might as well be touching someone with a thunderbolt.

Level 5: Develops near-touch range.

Ideally JJ would avoid even being in a room with Lady Deathstrike, Kimura, and Luci (who?) in the first place. He'd stand a better shot sneaking out than actually fighting them right now anyway.

There are bound to be fence sitters on this issue. If word got out that criminal organizations were kidnapping mutants and turning them into giant tumors to harvest drugs from their bodies to sell to more mutants (a drug that is more likely to cause mutants to go on a rampage and hurt people, mind you), then I think there would have to be some kind of public outcry against it. PLANNING TIME!

Alright, so, this is some fucked up shit. If spun the wrong way, the bad publicity this can place on mutants is enormous.

What needs to happen is we need to go to both Parker AND Blonde, while the Hellions call on the other two big name gangs in the Scar. Parker and Blonde will organize the police, and the gangs will work hand in hand with the police to try and root out this place. All participating mutants can be considered deputized so they can use their abilities to assist in police work.

That kind of police/mutant cooperation too root out a new kind of drug, an abominable drug that literally kills people just to be made, will be the best outcome...but only if we work it right.

Parker can handle publicity, Blonde can help organize the police and make them...cooperative, and Julian can help us in the scar.

Any objections?

>[X] We have to tell the rest of the mutants in the Scar.

“We have to make this public.” You say. “There is such a thing as bad press, and I know from experience that people like Creeper don’t want it.”

You possibly let slip a little more than you’d like there – heat of the moment, you guess – but Julian doesn’t seem to notice. He’s deep in thought. Eventually he pulls himself out of the fuming torpor he has going and gestures dismissively toward the paper unfolded across the table between you. You glance down, easily picking out the words even in the squalid gloom of the apartment.

“They’re confirming mutant involvement, but someone’s making sure everyone stays real tight lipped about what that involvement is.” He shrugs. “We’re probably on our own. Humans are fickle and easy to dupe.”

You keep yourself from reminding that mutants are technically still human, choosing to instead focus on what’s actually in the article. You extract a small nugget of hope from the statement that the case raises “serious humanitarian issues”, even if there’s no mention of why.

“Maybe.” You relent, mostly to avoid an argument. “Still, we at least need to tell everyone in the Scar – I mean, the Exclusion Zone.”

“Yeah.” He nods fervently. “Yeah, yeah… we do…”

His pulse skips.

“This is war.” Whoa. You didn’t say that. “This is like a war where one side doesn’t even realize it’s under attack yet. They need to know who they’re fighting. They’ll need someone to bring them together…”

That's not a plan. That was a magical wish. Plans involve actual steps towards a goal, steps that can work.

Like, for instance.

- Spread the word around the Scar about Jack production.
- Recruit mutant refugees for training together, learning how to use their powers in combat, and in tandem with each other.

We have a lot of firepower in the Exclusion Zone. We can make it into an army. We just start up the "Your brothers need YOU!" propaganda.

Now, the trouble is, who's in charge of training. Hellions, Corsairs, or Young X-Men. We have to settle the dick-waving contest there and coordinate so the strikes against the gangs are part of an overarching strategy, and not counterproductive to each other.

>[X] Easy, mein fuhrer. That will draw a lot of attention.
>[X] You don’t think this has to turn into a battle.

“Easy there.” Yeah, Mein Fuhrer, slow the heck down. “This isn’t a war on humanity. We’re not terrorists and we don’t have to be. This is a gang war that, as it happens, we happen to have some stake in.”

You know… you wouldn’t have known what to say there if you’d never sat in with Creeper whenever he had to talk to some big whack job crimeguy that wanted a piece of his pie. The thought puts a shameful little barb in the side of your ribs.

“Yeah?” He responds, frowning. “What’d you”–

“He thinks you’re being rash”–

“He’s questioning your sanity”–

“He’s probably right.”

That was three of the same voice, wasn’t it? You (and everyone else in the room) turn toward the adjoining hallway, where a trio of utterly identical young blondes stand in tight formation, your sense of smell telling you that they emerged from one of the bedrooms further on. They’re wearing the exact same set of bright pink pajamas, their motions flowing from one figure to the next without pause – they remind you of the way Layla’s duplicates act as if extensions of the same immense body. And their eyes glow a faint blue.
>>
>>33361137

>>
>(2/2)

Julian leans back in his seat, making a noise halfway between a sigh and a grumble.

“Alright. If you say so.” He stews in silence for a second, before looking up at you with fiercely determined eyes. “Understand… I actually care about us. Us, as in mutantkind in general. We are a brotherhood, and everything I do is to protect people like us. And if that means bringing every mutant in the Zone down on these people, then I will do whatever it takes to make that happen.”

He means it. He really does mean it. His heartbeat is steady and truthful and incredibly assured. You can’t help but kinda understand why the Hellions follow his ass around.

“But…” He looks back across the room at the apparent triplets. “…I’m open to other suggestions.”

One, we need to stop all jack within the exclusion zone, mainly by spreading the word on its source to the inhabitant mutants.

Two we need to group up with the main players there, track the dealers and destroy the distribution.

Three after we have tested the waters on possible reactions, we need to make this public in a fashion that will stop Mutant control from just charging in. For all we know we could end up having to keep this secret from society at large for a time.

But one thing is for sure, we need to step up the anti jack attacks.

Creeper was a criminal. His locations, his methods, his territory, it was all exposed. He was already the enemy of the police, JJ just gave them the information they needed to send him deep underground.

It's completely non-analogous. "Hey gangs are doing bad things!" is not going to help the police thwart these people. We don't know everything about them. We're not an informed informant.

Man… those triplets give you the chills. You’re not a fan of the way they all just focus on you, like they’re one person. You try to ignore them and get on with it.

“Firstly…” Firstly… “We have to know who we’re fighting. We need to know who’s actually distributing Jack. No point in just lashing out aimlessly.”

You’d just cause a stir, and you don’t want a stir. If possible, anything you or any mutant does in the coming months has to stay strictly under the radar. Going public with information isn’t out of the question, but letting it slip that there are mutants gearing up and… and waging war on normal folks? That’s not gonna fly, even if the ‘normal folks’ here are a dastardly criminal bunch. When people think of mutants with an agenda they think of The Brotherhood. They think of Magneto, his fist coming down on Genosha like a curse from God’s lips, a million and one souls burning under the weight of that goddamn asteroid.

Two heads are better than one, and more are better than that.”

“Agreed.”
“Agreed.”

The triplets smile an unnerving, shared smile.

Julian watches you in silence, clearly thinking, before finally extending a hand. The two of you shake, and for once, you feel like you understand this guy a little. He’s a jerk and possibly a loon, but you both want what’s best, and that’s what’s important. You’re both trying to help people.

Subdermal Armor 3 and Healing vitae are both good powers. But we have it within our power to eliminate crit fails on stealth rolls.

JJ needs all the anti crackbitch powers he can get.

How strong was the demon that JJ fought? Plus, what was its name? I think you said it was Marduk.

What heroes would JJ be friends with? I was thinking Captain America, Thor, Punisher.

Is JJ the reincarnation of Slaine?

If JJ became insane and evil, he'd basically be the monster from Jeepers Creepers.

How many chapters do you expect HMQ to have by the end of it, if JJ doesn't die quickly?

Is Rogue's name Marie Anne or did you misspell Anna Marie?

Will Joyce end up being the Venom to JJ's Spider-Man? Villain who is immune to his danger sense

It would have been very strong had it manifested fully. And it was referred to as the Wing of Beleth.

All three would make him feel small and unimpressive. But it's impossible not to be friends with Thor.

Nope.

Yeah... he kinda would.

Probably four or five.

The latter.

Nope.

>>
>>33362372
True, but if your main escape plan is to run down a tunnel you have no idea about without having mapped it out, then your a bit of an idiot.

Personally i don't mind, but i feel most of its uses can be achieved already using other senses we already have. Lets stretch that sense 5 a bit.

Claws would also let us dig through steel, which is not to be sniffed at if we come across foes we cant one hit KO with a punch.

Subdermal is the best bet for staying the hell alive alongside agil 4, but coupled with wings 3 it turns into having two home grown shields you can carry around.

Healing vitae is probably never gonna win a vote. It works against us vs some of our nastier potential foes, and it would be really hard to even notice we had it.
>>
>>33362391
Taskmaster with spidey and bullseye powers is dead-ard
>>
>>33362391
My priorities are
1)vitae
2)Electrostatic.

We can get armor and stuff from trash. just wear a manhole cower on a chain, like a rapper bling.
Wings and Agility are good, but optional. With wings we can just land on top of a building for same effect.
>>
>>33362487
Electrostatic is better.
WAY BETTER.
Claws are wasteful, since we can do same with strength.
>>
>>33362390
>And it was referred to as the Wing of Beleth.

Did JJ kill it or just beat it up?
>>
>>33362496
Causes penalty to agility, stealth and flight if we carry a manhole cover.
>>
>>33362146
Bout what I thought.
Right, to those who still want to buy vitae, keep in mind that it only grants HF 2, which is what, 20x baseline healing?
Which is decent, but nothing that much beyond human means.
Even assuming a generous estimate on time - lets say six hours, more likely less - that's five days worth of healing at average human levels.
Anything serious enough to make using vitae a worthwhile endeavor is probably too much for the level of healing granted to really matter.

Maybe if we weren't maxed out at HF 3, it'd be viable, but as it is? It's not worth three points.
>>
>>33362413
>True, but if your main escape plan is to run down a tunnel you have no idea about without having mapped it out, then your a bit of an idiot.
...Why do you think Echolocation is not useful then? It lets you do that on the go without having to try and put your ear to the wall for a few minutes puzzling out how the architecture is settling. Mostly I like Echo for where sight isn't helping (when we get blinded, someone else is invisible, blind corners we can't exactly position a target at). Sense 5 hearing is damn great, but Echolocation would give us better accuracy, detail, and speed for it. And we could be a combination of Daredevil and Bullseye.
>>
>>33362486
I still realy want to know what he was offering when he said "sweeten the deal".

Wouldn't have cost anything to hear him out before saying no.
>>
>>33362538
*have to open some kind of massive steel door in limited time, too thick to punch through or work around in time, electostatic does nothing to said door*

every power has its uses anon. Course the best scenario is having both.
>>
>>33362538
Going through walls and sentinels not good enough?
>>
>>33362544
Why? We have super strength. We don't even feel the wight. Cower it in cloth for stealth.
Drop away for flight.
Not like we fly or stelth anyway.
>>
>>33362538
Claws and strength stack, one can do either, but we can have fucking both and that argument is retarded.
>>
>>33362538
Claws make strength more efficient. Just that one level dip is enough to deal with most substances, and our strength focused on points like claws means we'd cut through steel pretty quickly. I do love the taserhands though.

>>33362596

1. We already have that (claws 1 and riastrad)
2. Claws 2 cuts STEEL. A really common and strong substance.

>>33362645

Dors is a valid point, but doors that are STR resistant are rare. We can just smash the wall then.

A pristine, glowing Cadillac would have pulled in to the orphanage. It would have then taken you, Laura, Noriko, Kevin, and Layla to wherever you wanted to go (flying off into the horizon if necessary), whereupon you are given medals and parades for the flimsiest of reasons. In the trunk you'd find a king's ransom in untraceable Nazi gold, as well as King Namor, who offers you a night of Imperious Sex that you would remember fondly for the rest of your mortal existence.

>then you scared yourself so much that it jumped out of your body.
That's hilarious.

But after the Wing of Beleth incident you hinted that it left something behind. And, that if a psychic tryed to read JJ's mind they would be in for a surprise.

Where you just messing with us when you said that? Because in this thread we finally had a psychic read JJ's mind. I'm a little disappointed that nothing happened.
>>
>>3362938
Maybe they didn't read his mind.
>>
>>33363050
