I have a player with severe social anxiety in my group. He enjoys the game, when he's not freaking out and convincing himself that he sucks and everyone hates him, but he spends so much time convincing himself of how terrible he is that he just makes himself miserable. Because he's my best friend he won't believe me when I tell him that he isn't worse than any of the other players, he thinks I'm just being nice.

How do I make my game more comfortable for this guy? I want him to have fun and not have to worry.
>>
Get him more acquainted and comfortable with the other players in your group
>>
>>33390339
... hm probably find a way to get them use to the people and get comfortable.

Other wise food, It gets me to chill. But you know them better than I. So I will leave the food part to you.

As someone who speaks autism, assuming that is what it is, you are going to want to speak quite literally, and break things down for him.

The guy I know with autism is an engineer so, I try to make normal talk sound like tech talk. He seems to think that conversations should follow some flow chart he has in his head.

When I say speak literally, try to think of words by their dictionary definition without emotion behind them.

Try to avoid assuming they know basic social standards and you may have to explain these to them, X happens when you say Y, for example.

This is all assuming that this is like the person I know. And yes I know 4chan missuses autism/

Tell him to chew some gum while he or she is playing. That shit takes the anxiety away.
>>
>>33390474
...You're really perceptive, you know that? He is mildly autistic. The thing is, though, that he hasn't been making big gaffes or otherwise embarrassing himself, he's just got this strong impression of himself as a "pathetic, annoying, sub-human fuck" (to use some of his favorite words for himself) and he seems to work off the assumption that he's irritating everyone else and being a burden.
>>33390442
>>33390453
These would be better ideas if we were meatspace friends.
>>
Troll answer: make him play something with Cha below 6 and pass his spaghetti for "in character".

Serious answer: As a person with mild social anxiety (and serious haphephobia) I'd say the only "easy" answer is proper meds. One basically drugs himself to the point where he stops caring. As you can imagine, while it will make (force?) the guy to feel at ease, it will probably affect his performance in a session, which may or may not be noticable. By proper meds I mean prescription stuff given to him by specialist, no over-the-counter stuff.
Weed and/or booze are sometimes good enough substitute, but also might make situation worse (hypotetically even drive him suicidal for a bit).

Other than that - plenty of patience, positive feedback and constant encouragement. Ideally not just from you and not just in D&D. Every little counts. You won't notice the difference for a while, but in the long run it's the best you can do for him. Also make him do things he's good with, stage situations where he's gonna succeed. And get him to know the players (if he doesn't already) people with anxiety function better if they feel being on familiar ground.

It could also help to figure out what's the original source of his anxiety, if you're on the "best friend" terms, chances are he will tell ya. Could figure something out from that.

Oh and if you're fine with lying to people for greate good, placebo effect might actually do plenty, just hand him some harmless vitamin pills passing them for antistressant or w/e. It's all in the head.
>>
>>33390664
Use complements, and thank him if he does something helpful, but try not to bullshit it so he thinks you are going out of your way.

>>33390747
Prozac is a fucking miracle.
>>
>>33390442
>Other wise food, It gets me to chill.
Could backfire terribly on (ex) anorexic/bulimic. But generally should work.
>>
>>33390785
>Prozac is a fucking miracle.
Amen to that.
>>
>>33390842
I don't know if it makes me altered like alcohol or weed, or if this is just how normal people feel.

Either way it is great.
>>
Get him to a fucking shrink. You are neither his therapist or his mother. Yeah, it's not nice. But if you go out of your way just to pander to him, you are taking time and effort away from the rest of the group. And that's not fair on them. I'm assuming he is an adult, he takes responsibility for himself.
>>
Speaking as someone with mild autism, I used to have a related thing where I would apologize for something stupid, people would tell me not to, I would apologize for that, etc.

I like the food idea, perhaps wearing a sweater, or a heavy coat could help this person? I personally feel more at ease in general while wearing heavy clothing
>>
>>33390923
Probably good advice, but be careful there are some shit shrinks out there.

Also this doesn't mean you shouldn't be nice to him.
>>
CBT, lots of reading on the subject, and vipassana and metta-bhavana meditation.

More important than drugs and professional help is a grounded understanding of the nature of the issue by the one experiencing it and growing the tools to examine and confront it properly. Therapy goes a long way, but is only a part of self-therapy. Not to mention middle class white girls with no mental health history, a mass of sociocultural biases, and a level personal and spiritual development and self-awareness usually found in bacteria aren't helpful at dealing with YOUR problems, in my personal experience.

Booze and transsexual hookers.

Or, in the case that your friend is not degenerate, you could try giving him tasks that challenge him, but he is nonetheless able to complete at least 75% of the time. That fixes low self esteem.
>>
>>33390339
OP, are you sure it's not a sexual fetish?
Maybe this dude gets a hard-on by being treated poorly and being demeaned by other players.
>>
>>33390339
Compliment him, get a bit of alcohol involved, possibly ask him to go to therapy.
>>
>>33391214
That is usually pretty obvious.

Trust me I am an expert on this subject.
>>
>>33391235
We're on the internet, though. Plenty of "I swear I'm not gay guys" shota trap rape fetishists on here.

>>33390339

Ask him if he's comfortable enough to talk about why he feels like that with someone else.

Go through it with him. Encourage him after and tell him that whatever sort of thing that caused it will not (probably) happen here.

If it persists despite your best efforts then seek the help of someone with more expertise than you.

I've seen that before.
Was he raised by a single mother?
Is he bi-racial?
Does he have sexuality or sex identity issues?
These aren't the only possible causes of self-loathing, but I've seen a lot of people who get abuse for things like those.
>>
>>33391320
Probably not. I wonder if it would make him feel better to know that people feel the same as him.
>>
>>33391359
His parents shouted at him a lot when he was a kid because he couldn't into normal social cues and didn't give the right responses.
>>

Being uncomfortable with lewd things is a bad sign. It can point to a troubled family (adultery) or past sexual harassment. He needs to discuss that with his head doctor.

You are creating a codependency. That shit aint healthy.
>>
>>33391851
Nonsense. Codependency is how two people pilot giant robots together.
Two people acting together on their path through the world is a viable option.
>>
>>33391682
The fact that you are getting depressed about someone else's mental issues and projecting them unto you is not healthy. Break off the relationship till the fucker gets better. Or he will drag you down with him. You aren't fucking him, so you ain't losing shit.
>>
>>33391820
I'd say it's a 50/50 split, and whatever past relations they had don't enter the equation. Maybe the cheater never stayed with a dude long enough to fuck, and the faithful started early and got dumped by shitty boyfriends; there are a lot of different real life possibilities. Bottom line is: cocks don't change thoughts.
>>
>>33391787

Mate, if a women has taken a boatload of cocks. Then her mind thinks along the line of a boatload of cocks. Otherwise she wouldn't have taken a boatload of cocks.
>>
>>33391881
No, that is how shitty relationships happen. Yeah I got the mecha joke, but having your emotions depend on another person is a recipe for disaster. If you can't be happy on your own, your happiness with said person also won't last. Because you will keep wanting them to make you happy, instead of wanting to be happy yourself.
>>
>>33391899
Seems selfish, but practical.

>>33391916
You mean how moe slice of life anime veteran enthusiasts from /a/ think in terms of cute girls doing cute things, as though their entire mind is a folder entitled "Anime reaction images"?

Or how the really obsessive homosexuals seem to have their sex drive motivating most of their thoughts and actions?

Or how people really deep into a cult internalise all the cult's views, and then think of things in terms of righteousness and unholiness?

I suppose it makes sense, but I didn't think "Woman receiving the D" was extremist enough to have all their thoughts ruled by the D.

eh. that codependency stuff is mostly garbage IMO. if you're truly incapable of surviving without each other, then that is a problem because generally it's an issue to be totally unable to survive without SOMETHING, not necessarily just because it's another person. you shouldn't rely on anything that much, be it a person or a drug or what have you. if you enjoy each other's company, then you should feel free to associate as much as you desire.

if he's having real confidence issues though he should probably do something about that outside of your influence. it may eventually fade with time; i was the same way and i "got better" insofar as socializing and feeling not-so-much like a hunted animal got easier as i did it more often. i'm still mostly asocial, but that's just the way i am and i'm fine with it; my friends understand.

i get the feeling that i'm on the low-medium end of that social anxiety stuff though. some may never grow out of it with experience. it might just be so terrifying that it's impossible to stomach it. you might as well ask a snail to just "try a little salt"

just my two cents. stick with it. no need to abandon the poor fellow because he's a "social liability" unless you care deeply about some status bullshit, or if he's really fucking up your mood in a consistent and toxic way.

have you tried being very direct

like extremely direct

if he's the autism he might not understand what you're trying (or not trying) to do. in which case being direct is a good idea.

if he's too far into the self-hate you might have to do something more extreme and/or be more patient and/or give up. though the last one is impossible to advise on considering we know very little of the precise context surrounding the given social interaction.

Then the problem's just that you don't have friends who share your interests. Try blogging or online friends. Even online dating, if you can search the site for girls with whatever nerdy interests you want to talk about.

Easy way to find somebody interested: find someone who's already talking about the same interests on their own blog or whatever, and question them and bring up your thoughts.

I have irl friends but it still sucks to not talk about SMT or 40k or whatever with them. As to the online thing, making the jump from messaging back and forth to "hey let's meet up!" is one of the scariest things I can imagine (not just as a social thing either, I'll be too paranoid I'll get killed).

So here I am on 4chan. Talking to strangers every day since I don't know where else to go.

You can't help him with social anxiety only he and his therapist can do that.

The only thing you can do is to try and make him realize that he needs to do that. And you don't do that by being gentle and cuddle him. If you do that he is just going to stay the same. on the other hand don't let him retreat further into himself. Drag him into the light or at least get him to the point where he can learn to help himself.

if he thinks he's some detestable worm, just show him what an actual detestable worm is, and then "prove" that he isn't one. easy peasy

Transsexuality is a mental illness
Feminism is harmful to society because a woman's proper place is to loyally support and obey her man.
White people should support other white people, and not bother with equality or diversity.
Being fat is extremely unhealthy. Proper diet and exercise will make you a better person.
You don't have headmates, you're just doing it for the attention.

Though, most of them are attracted to men, and there are many men on 4chan with a sexual fetish for the trans-sex, and they get REALLY aggressive and obnoxious with the sexual harassment.
Powerlevel your mental fortitude stat. The internet is full of perverts, and "sexually confused young male" activates said perverts' erections with the force of a volcano.

It might be better to lie about who you are, or what your interests are, if you're not comfortable with sexual harassment.

I think if you look past the laugh track you can see some really broken people and it will show you how in a way they tick and sometimes you just can't fix people unless they really want to and can learn to love themselves or at least accept themselves as they are. -Transexuality isn't a mental illness, it's a physical state. If it's the RESULT of a mental condition that's another beast entirely, your comment shows that either you don't bother to think what you're typing or maybe you're just too stupid to define shit.
-Feminism (the real fucking thing, not the tumblr variety) actually enabled women to support their men, their country and their children. It only degenerated because you live in a culture that trivializes a lot of shit and spoonfeeds you artificial ideologies and lies. No, you can't take a "redpill" and still uphold the same values that said culture presents to you in the same retarded way for the same pseudo reasons, that's the whole point of looking at reality.
-Intelligent, honest, caring people should support other ok people, race be damned. I'm not impressed by stupid white people supporting other stupid white people, or stupid black, brown or yellow people doing the same. You don't impress me and should educate yourself before "supporting" anyone.
-Being fat is unhealthy, but being fit doesn't make you a better person. A lot of fit people are shallow assholes. A lot of fat people are shallow assholes too.
-I never said I had headmates, that means if you heard it, maybe you have some.
-Supernatural is shitty, and I haven't watched even one episode of doctor who, so I wouldn't know. Even if these are loved by tumblr, it's a poor red herring to distract from the fact that you're just pasting something that someone else posted.

When me and my best friend were in high school we were so attached that people made jokes about us being gay together to the point where we owned it. If someone called us fags as an insult we would laugh and say "Yea, and?".

Never got legit bullied because he at least was big and strong as fuck, and I made friends very easily.

I wouldn't say that kind of relationship is bad, as long as you're a man about it though. Extreme friendship and manly compassion is fine, as long as you don't require your bro to function as a person without him. Also tell him to get lost when you want to go wenching, trust me.

talk to him about doing a therapy group or something, it really helps. one thing i did that helped a lot was to just go to random stores and exert your right as a consumer. tell him to go ask some clerk about a product, but not buy it. tell him to go ask his hairdresser to explain what he did to his hair, tell him to get the baker to pack some bread up for him but reconsider at the last moment.

he will feel like hes being rude or not worth the effort those people are putting in, but once you push yourself to do it a couple times you realize your rights as a person and it can be really empowering.

I remember when I first started driving and buying shit as an adult. It was great.

Nothing made me feel more mature, stable, and in charge of my own life than driving down to food place and buying my own food with my own money.

Than later you get the same feeling by getting a house. Then getting married, having kids, etc.

But buying shit is the first step.

i'm a vegan, so i just "remembered" to ask the baker whether the bread was vegan after i ordered it. that is a very normal situation and realizing that no normal person is gonna feel like theyre being fucked with is the whole point of the exercise!

When you’re a sperg, spending your childhood struggling to comprehend social cues and being isolated usually leaves you thinking one of two ways; deluding yourself that you’re better than everyone else (the kind of person 4chan loves to mock, rightfully so) or believing every awkward social interaction is your fault and absorbing any criticism aimed at you. As a sperg with a case of the latter mindset I mentioned, a good friend helps a lot. It may not seem like it now, but just by playing with him and being nice to him you’re helping your friend a lot OP.
>>
>>33397873
You know what? I'm in the same boat as OP's friend and I've had major problems exercising my customer rights. I've had several legit problems and I'd always feel great anxiety whenever I had to confront the other person. It got much easier with practice and in the end, it was much easier for me to start talking to people. Another thing that helped me was fighting the bureaucracy. If they live in a bureaucratic state, that's a skill that will definitely be needed and in my experience it also helps.
>>
>>33399513
Be outgoing. Talk to employees, and ask them where to find what you're looking for. Usually they'll be happy to walk around the store with you and help you find something, because speaking with a real human bean is infinitely preferable to stacking product on shelves.

That's my experience, anyway.

/tg/: Better advice than /adv/.

Indeed
>>
Here is the way I see it with someone who is prone to anxiety.

1: Coming down hard on them will only create a negative feedback loop in their head. Even if you manage to snap them out of the loop for a moment they will over-analyze a situation if just to justify a return to their entropic social spiral.

2: Make them feel a part of the group, not by putting attention on their character, but suggesting courses of action where the load is shared, and emphasize what the anxious player's strengths are.

3: Make it clear what sort of mistakes can be recovered from, and if need-be let their character fail, but let them recover. If there is someone riding them about a biffed die roll, correct that player immediately.

4: Show there's consequences for a mistake/foul-up, yes, but move on as quickly as possible to lessen the gravity of the error. If there isn't a focus on a mistake, then the anxious player will feel it isn't a big deal.

5: Players like this do very poorly in hardcore gaming environments. It might be better to play in narrative, low-lethality games.

Also I know this because I am socially anxious.

I have serious social anxiety, actually, a therapist once told me it was more like a phobia and I can tell you that your friend wont get better. He will always be like that. You can't make him feel better and any attempt will just make him think even less of himself.
>>
You anxietyfags are weird. it's like you say you don't like it, but suggest things to avoid it instead of dealing with the problem. I went from crippling anxiety to pretty good over the course of two years through intense research and meditation. I even got to the point where I worked in a restaurant without giving a single fuck.

Teacher here, only compliment him when you mean it. He'll be able to tell when you're bullshitting him and it will play into his belief that he is worthless and wasting your time. When he does something good do not clap or make a show of it because that may not be what he's looking for in the first place. Talk to him in a calm voice at all times even when he starts to erode himself, be boringly consistent in telling him that he is not a waste of space and you genuinely want him to be there and it will stick after a few weeks.

The only thing I have anxiety over is if new players or a new group I find aren't so far gone down the usual road that it's nearly impossible to have a good game with them.

When I run into people like this, I usually just boss them around. My intention was never to get them to feel better, but simply to get them to get a move on, but many of them seem quite happy to be given clear directives on how to act in order not to be annoying.

I certainly used to appreciate clear communication back when I was a socially retarded little shit.

I have a problem with one player,he can't think of doing anything other than full attack even when he isn't a fighter, he tried to do it with a wizard with obvious results, when I asked why he does that is because he didn't know what to do.
The other problem he haves is that he gets depressed when things don't go his way, or he doesn't get instant satisfaction.
Other than that is not like I don't like the guy but he is like a zero, he doesn't add or subtract anything to the game because he is silent unless you tell him to do something.

Anyway OP, I might be older than the other posters here (28), but just be there as a friend for the guy. Just be cool, you're there to have fun, you don't have to take the burden of all of his social anxiety yourself.

I don't know the guy personally so I can't tailor my advice to him, but sharing your own personal issues might be helpful, misery loves company.

My engineer nerd friend, who had his own anxiety issues about six years ago is doing well, and I've been asked to speak at his wedding which is hella cool.

That's a bit of a fantasy, that everyone was better back in ye olden days.

History makes a lot more sense when you realize that people suffered many similar neuroses to what we have classified today. A lot more kids being diagnosed with autism? Well look at the nerds marrying other nerds. ADHD? Look at the extroverted folks marrying other extroverts?

He and another player connected over similar hobbies, shared their own woes, and decided to make a go of it.

It's actually rather close to my own situation as well. With more women getting into /tg/ hobbies, it's only natural more couples meet because of it, so anytime some manchild whines about PC police or some stupid complaint, I start imagining them as the dudes in this pic

I think you're referring to the single worst serial in the history of Doctor Who, which means you aren't going nearly far enough back. With rare exceptions, Doctor Who quit being good after the 4th Doctor and quit being tolerable after the 5th. See this guy? Overused though he may have been, he was an awesome villain. And I'm talking about the original Delgado version, not the annoying comic book mockery of a villain played by Ainley. Also, fuck Thatcher.

As an aside, I love the kids who get really worked up about politics, they look and sound just like the types of people they hate ("man you're a fascist") but the great irony is that they are completely unaware of how they appear.
>>
>>33390339
>How do I make my game more comfortable for this guy?

You cannot do this, not directly.

>I want him to have fun and not have to worry.

This you can do, and you've already yourself answered your question: do not worry.

In order to make your player *know* that his anxiety is something he should not mind, he must himself come to know this.

You cannot do this for him.

But you *can* show him what to do: namely, not worry about it.

So, do not worry about it. Run your games. Invite your player.

Have fun with your friend. Do not concern yourself about his problems, and, eventually, he himself will come to not worry about his problems -- and then he will be happier.

But let me reiterate: you can *not* solve the problems that belong to your friend -- just as he cannot solve the problems that belong to you.

I taught a girl with social anxiety taekwondo for awhile. She was like seven so it was hard enough already.

OP, you're a good person for trying to do this though. Since he's actually grown up my knowledge is foggy, but generally, try to validate his actions. Respond to him when he says something. Have NPCs listen and go a bit easy on him in combat. If the other PCs call you out say he's new and a bit scared.

If you want an excuse to go easy on him, have him play a "caster" or other support role. If he's scared of dying in game, play a tank or similar role. Not sure on system.

Good luck and I hope he's fine.

I don't think pointing out the undesirability of a thought is the same as saying it's a crime.

Otherwise, saying so would itself be wrong, because it's also doing the same thing.

tl;dr you can't say saying someone's a communist is wrong because by the same logic saying that someone is saying that is wrong. If you follow.

I came here in 2005 when I learned about /h/. I got bored after graduation, but came back recently, now that I'm into wargaming.

I do usually prefer older more mature boards, but I do enjoy lewdness that most other boards prefer to keep private.

Not that you give a shit, because I'm guessing you're closer to the 4chan median age, but there's nothing wrong with that everyone is young once, just don't act like the kind of college-aged kid that gives others a bad name.

Dammit.

I saw this thread yesterday, and it got me thinking if I had some social anxiety myself.

The more I thought, the more it seemed that way. I just hope it's some sort of hypochondriac bullshit, but part of me doesn't think so.

I live alone, I have no social life to speak of outside of work, I actively avoid talking to people, etc.
Why the hell can I function perfectly with a computer with totally random people on the net?

I dunno, I think I'm just blowing this out of proportion. I hope I am.
