You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

As you leave the Groves behind, descending the dank, age-bitten steps down to the courtyard, you consider the coming days carefully. You can’t help but feel that your life has… expanded… somehow, over the last few days, bloating out to point of encumbering girth. Before, your existence was simple, but now your mind is populated by an increasing number of worries – worries that are more than just yours. More than just staying warm, staying fed, surviving. Those things weren’t easy, but they were uncomplicated.

In a way, you find yourself almost missing the complete detachment; the cyclical simplicity of it.

“Hey…” Lucas speaks up beside you, his voice quiet and contemplative. “…You think it’s a bad thing that I kinda agreed with him? Julian?”

You have to think about that – maybe a little longer than necessary, since Laura suddenly seems rather interested in your reply, too.

“I don’t know if he’s wrong.” You sigh. Wishy-washy, JJ. “I just don’t think he’s considering all the consequences.”

Lucas seems to mull that over.

As you approach the sidewalk opposite the estate, you realize that you’re not really going anywhere – you’re just letting your legs meander you around aimlessly. You roll your shoulders and quietly tell yourself to snap out of it.

You got stuff to do.

>[X] Visit the Detective Agency.
>[X] Runners.

Well, your world may have expanded its borders to encompass a bunch of awkward hangers-on, but next on the agenda is looking out for numero uno.

“Hey, Lucas? You mind letting the Young X-Men know about all this?” You pause, and add: “Maybe take Kevin with you. You can tell them we sorted out their vampire problem, too.”

“Guess so.” He shrugs. “Ain’t got anything else to do. Where’re you headed?”

You really, really feel like you should have said something cooler here – like, “I’ve got a case to crack” or something – but you just respond that you’re off to sort out some job issues. You part ways, making your way up north. On the way, you notice a subtle shift in the language of the city; people are grouped tighter, as if closing up in defence. The low, urban hum that hangs over the streets has a cornered, savage edge to it. You guess the explosion from last night has people a little riled up.

You make good time, arriving at the doorstep to the Agency at 12:15. When you push the buzzer it’s the Blonde Phantom herself that answers, and you find yourself – Laura too – hurried up the stairs while she apologizes repeatedly for the events of last night. The main office is empty save for a girl you don’t recognize – some thin, heavily goth’d-up Asian chick that the Phantom quickly introduces as another intern (they seem to have a lot of those). She appears to be staring intently at a letter laid out on the floor.

“Want something to drink?” The Phantom asks over her shoulder, striding elegantly over to the desk beside the window.

“Yeah, sure, uh… thanks.” You nudge Laura slightly. “You want something?”

She shakes her head.

“Nico. Coffee.”

In the adjoining room, you hear the younger girl heave herself up, grumbling under her breath. Man, you love having Superman ears.

While the Phantom roots around with the surely unnecessary number of draws under her desk (wait. Did that last one have a monkey’s paw in it? And were two of the fingers retracted?), you find yourself doing little else but standing around awkwardly, flinching occasionally when it seems like the Phantom’s attempts to sort through her desk might disturb one of the towering pillars of paperwork that litter the room. Eventually, you find yourself pretty much about to implode with nervousness if you don’t break the silence, and you reach out for the most obvious subject.

“So, uh…” You lick your lips tentatively. “The Soames. What’ll happen with them?”

“Worried for the kid?” Her laugh is like the pitter-patter of water over stone. “Remy is discussing their options with them. Frankly, we either procure a surreptitious instructor for their daughter, or provide them the means to leave the country in a discreet manner. Or they could register her, I suppose, but…”

She sighs, and wenches open a particular draw that seems almost fused shut with disuse. You smell green.

“…I’m sure you understand how attractive a prospect that is.”

Withdrawing a stack (literally, glorious, teetering stack) of notes, she thumbs through them, eventually slicing a few off the top.

“One thousand dollars exact.” She smiles sweetly. “I figured I’d plump up the numbers a little, what with all the trouble.”

You think you hear trumpets and party-poppers somewhere in the middle distance. That’s not just you, right?

It takes you a moment to accept that this is a real thing and it’s actually happening to you. As the reality of the situation sinks in, you find yourself almost fighting it, glancing worriedly over your shoulder, a little bit irrationally afraid that Miss Intern is about to blackjack you upside your head and you’ll wake up and it was all a dream. A painful, wonderful, extremely green dream.

Instead she just hands you your coffee. You take a sip. Tastes like… rainbows and butterflies.

“T-thanks.” Taking the cash, you slide your fingers across the weathered, paper texture, affirming its place in physical reality. You’re not sure what else to say, really.

Pocketing your cash money (you’ll guard that motherfucking pocket with your life, goddamn), you cast an eager eye over the mountains of apparently unsorted folders and stray papers.

“Anything else you might need me for?” You ask, your brain bustling with little cartoon dollars.

A small, wry smile spreads out under the Phantom’s mask.

“Well now, aren’t you eager to please?” Yes, yep, guilty as charged. In the forefront of your brain, a hundred thousand Washingtons wink out at you from their papery windows. The detective clears her throat, slipping down into her seat, and crosses her legs. You’re pretty sure the temperature just rose very slightly. “As a matter of fact, there was a case I had somewhat earmarked for you. It’s… big… but it might be near impossible to pull off without your powers.”

Easing back against her seat, she gestures toward the adjoining room, where Intern no.02 is scrutinizing that letter once again, now with the help of the world’s most overly-elaborate magnifying glass.

“That’s a letter from a certain Mr. Kamar. We have no idea who he is, but he has money, and he’s willing to dole it out in… appreciable… quantities in return for confirmation on exactly which crime families are currently vying over the territory of Queens stretching South of here.”

That sounds… heavy. But it could be convenient, too, in a way.

“Two days from now, the combatants are set to meet at the White Rose Gala, likely in a private room. I’d like to put you in there.”

>[X] How dangerous would this be, 1-10?
>[X] What’s up with the magnifying glass?
>[X] Are you sure this ‘Kamar’ guy can be trusted?

“Okay…” You think. “How dangerous would be, exactly?”

The Phantom smiles very vaguely, seeming to appreciate your caution.

“That depends. How competent are you?” Her smile broadens out somewhat, before she switches to a less playful tone. “I would assume that, were you to be caught, you’d be killed. Or at least hurt very badly. You would not, of course, be alone. Remy has secured a set of tickets to the gala itself. He’ll be nearby if worst comes to worst, but Mr. Kamar’s instructions are very explicit. He wants us to ensure that nobody knows we’re there.”

Yeah. That worries you a little, too. How do you know this ‘Kamar’ guy isn’t one of the other big players trying to edge in? How do you know it’s not Creeper?

“And you’re sure this guy can be trusted?”

She shrugs in return.

“That’s rarely guaranteed in this line of work. We have done similar jobs for him before, however.”

“And the magnifying glass?”

She smirks.

“Nico is checking for traces of supernatural manipulation. We don’t need to know everything about our clients, but it is frustrating to be completely in the dark.”

“Supernatural manipulation?” You furrow your brow. That sounds kinda… spooky. “Like mutant powers?”

“Like…” She chuckles quietly, as if you’ve tripped up over some small joke privy only to her “…supernatural manipulation.”

Okay.

Mugga's gotta be kept informed.
>>
>[X] Take the case.

Well… you guess this is fortuitous, really. You already wanted to know who exactly it is and how they're cramping in on Creeper’s game, and this is as good an opportunity as any to find out. You might actually get paid to do some good, too.

“I’ll do it.” You decide aloud.

“Wonderful!” The Phantom does that thing again, the thing where she totally looks and sounds like The Emperor from Star Wars for a second, and quickly jots something down on a bit of paper from her printer. “Here.” She passes the note to you. “Relevant addresses, as well as Remy’s number. You two should probably get to know each other or something, seeing as you’ll be working together on this one.”

“Thanks.” Seriously, thanks.

You stow the piece of paper away and, stepping around ‘Nico’, head towards the door. Suddenly, a thought strikes you.

That chick is an actual witch. She's definitely believes demons are real. All I'm saying is JJ mentions he ran into something (possibly a mutant) that called itself the Wing of Beleth.
>>
>>33402654
Why not? I do believe that falls under the purview of being excellent to one another. And by this point enough of us have pointed and laughed at him for something that is rapidly falling out of the collected consciousness as younger people get into the assorted nerd hobbies.

I find his ignorance less funny and more worrisome that the classics and the touchstones are being lost.
>>
>>33402707
I don't think we know that she's a witch, I was thinking per JJ's perspective.
>>
>>33402709
Part of the reason we were laughing is because it was a question that could have been easily answered by a simple google search.

If he was asking about something that was obscure or difficult to research sure I'd tell him. But if you type in Soylent Green you'll have your answer after 30 seconds of reading.
>>
>>33402707

>>33402790
Sad thing it I did, but when I was reading it, I was under the notion it was some sort of paste or Marvel thing I was not aware of
>>
>>33402777
I know about Beleth. and the demon we fought was not a medium rank demon. Not a demon king but not cannon fodder either.

JJ always adds the "possibly a mutant" because not everyone believes in demons and he doesn't want to look crazy. In the Marvel universe a mutant calling itself the Wing of Beleth is more believable to the average person than an actual demon.
>>
>>33402909
>the demon we fought was not a medium rank demon
I meant
>the demon we fought WAS a medium rank demon.

The wing of Beleth is a medium rank demon.

You stop by the door, biting your lip. Tell her? Don’t? The people she’s employing have a right to know, don’t they?

Eventually, you come to a decision, and turn around the face her.

“By the way, Jack is Soylent Green.”

All assembled parties (Laura included) shoot you a quizzical stare.

Damn. Dammit, JJ, you goofster. You wish you could just bury yourself under the moon and then throw yourself into the sun and let yourself cook.

“I mean…” Urgh. “…Jack is people. Mutants. It's made out of 'em. Just thought you’d like to know.”

The Phantom’s brow rises under her mask, stretching it to its limits. Nico turns toward you, staring disbelievingly.

“Whoa, what? Seriously?”

You nod.

“You have proof?” Asks the Phantom, almost as though delivering a quick, meditated jab.

No. No, of course you don’t.

“I will soon.” You tell her, and, possibly, yourself. “I just thought some of your people should know about it.”

She nods her head slowly.

“Get proof. Show me it.”

You tell her you will, and make your way out into the cold. Your stomach rumbles very slightly, but you barely register it, your every nerve focused on the unfamiliar weight of the money sitting in your pocket.

>[X] Go shopping.

You stare up at the sky. Big, pregnant clouds. Dull blues. Rain later, maybe. But as far as you’re concerned, the sun is shining and the birds are out. Life is magnificent.

“You know what time it is, Laura?”

She blinks up at you, and dutifully checks her watch.

“Twelve-forty.”

You shake your head, smiling smugly.

“No. ‘tis the shopping hour.”

It might take more than an hour, though.
>>
>(2/2)

First on the agenda is clothing. Something you’ve noticed about being a gangsta-ass mutant lizard is that it’s hell in your wardrobe. The past few days have seen you go through more outfits than most years, and you think it’s about time to get prepared for the next time you shred your shit up in some embarrassing locale. Laura has to drop into the first few thrift shops, due to your present state of obvious mutieness, but after a few surreptitious purchases and a quick change in a convenient alley, you’re all set, rocking big, warm gloves, a new hoodie, and a nice (if a little torn on the inlay) jacket to go with it. You manage to pick up a pretty cool set of red-tinted shades, too.

With that out of the way, you load up on spares for everyone else. Warm stuff, mostly, though not too warm – winter’s on the way out, after all. Laura picks out a big, black hoodie with some of that Mexican Day o’ the Dead crap all over it, skulls and stuff, and you offer to pick up the tab. You hit the high street running along not far from the Bugle (it’s just the closest), raiding store after store. By the time you’re done, you’ve picked up one of those big tents like the ones you and Joyce used to set up by the lake, some spare fuel, some pillows, sleeping bags for everyone you can think of, some surplus matches, a bunch of metal cups, several books chosen on the basis of “these are the best ones because I say so”, and assorted kitchen utensils. Plus at least a day or two of food.

And the very best thing? You can carry all this shit home now that you’re Lizard Hulk.

Striding along the street with your shopping swaying tenuously around you, you smile a big, fat, happy smile to yourself. You went shopping today.

Fly as your incredible strength is, you do notice that it’s getting harder and harder to ignore your stomach on the go, and the excess weight probably isn’t helping. Luckily, you’re on Big Money Street (not really. It’s more like medium money street. Queens, after all), and you have all the choice in the world of unhealthy crap to consume.

Recalling Laura’s reaction to The Colonel’s greasy chicken goodness, you actively steer yourself away from anything fried chicken, instead dropping into a Burger King. You order the largest burger you can discern on their menu, drop your metric shit ton of bags down around a table, and get to eating.

>Current Funds: $788

While you eat, you recall Peter’s text, and send him a curt reply. You’re pretty sure he should be at school or something now, but you’d like to see him. Anything he can find on your dad would be… you hesitate to say cool, but it’d be interesting, at least.

Licking your fingers, you allow yourself to drop into a momentary food coma, before realizing that Laura is watching you and straightening back up. You guess you shoveled that beef (chicken? Something else? All you know for sure is that it was big and satisfying) down pretty quick.

“So, uh…” You grin broadly. “Anything else you wanna pick up? We’ve got money to spare.”

She glances down and thinks for a moment, leaning forward to sip from her coke (that’s all she ordered).

“I don’t know. Perhaps.”

“Alright!” You heave your shopping back up, grunting slightly. “Let’s go take a look around, yeah?”

There is a moment of expressionlessness, like she’s adrift slightly from reality for a second, and then she smiles very faintly.

“Yes.”

You check out a few places, mostly little stores that stand in the shadows of the larger department chains – Laura doesn’t seem interested in any of the big clothes shops or jewellery stores (thank Christ for that). Eventually, the two of you run into a pair of folks selling their wares on the street, apparently advertising for some family business they’re starting up. It’s all pretty foreign stuff – they’re from Uzbekistan, you learn – and it doesn’t take the two of them long to convince you into parting with a bit of money.

You sit on the sidewalk, watching as Laura stands, stock-still and thrumming with quiet nervousness. The woman of the pair silently and professionally weaves a bunch of ornamental threads into her hair. She shows off a set of small, wooden baubles of some kind, which Laura stares at intensely for some time before choosing, and uses it to bind it all into a long, golden-red braid hanging down one side of her face, before offering the girl a mirror.

At this point, the guy cuts in, nudging you and proclaiming – this big, open grin spreading out under his moustache – that you should get one too.

>[X] Hey, why not?

You smile to yourself, thinking about how ludicrous you’d have considered this just a matter of weeks ago. Back then, money meant food and occasionally clothes – and that was that. No questions. That was just how it was. Flinching a little inwardly, you indulge yourself. It’s just a few dollars, after all.

“Sure, why not?”

As soon as you say it, the woman moves in to adjust Laura’s braid, moving that little wooden sphere up a little. The guy grins wide – almost comically wide – and steers you up onto the street. You stand there, feeling moderately weirded out, as this guy palms through your hair and separates a few strands.

“What colour?” He asks.

Uh…

“Teal, I guess? Light blue?” It’d go with your eyes, you suppose.

He nods, and begins weaving. Your heart skips a beat slightly when one of his knuckles brushes up against the tip of your ear, but he either doesn’t notice the weirdness or doesn’t comment on it. Within a minute or two, you have a long, thin braid woven together with an assortment of blue and silver threads. The man motions to the collection of little beads laid out beside you.

“You want them matching, hmm?”

You glance at Laura. She doesn’t seem to know what to say.

“Uh… yes? I suppose so?”

“Good, good.” He leans down, and picks up a set of three spheres, each one subtly differentiated from the other by the tiny carvings etched into them. He points to one “Comrades.” Then the next. “Brother and sister.” And then, finally, the next. “Husband and wife.”

For the first time, you realize that the two braids they themselves wear are a perfect match.

You stomach shrivels up into a raisin. Suddenly this was a terrible idea. All that cash money went to your head and now you’re paying for it. You swallow, glancing up at Laura. She looks back at you in impenetrable silence, her eyes never wavering. Is she waiting for you to pick one? Is she mulling it over herself?

Your brain feeling somewhat frayed at the edges, you fall back on logic to make your decision for you. Obviously, you’re not siblings, and you’re not husband and wife either, no matter how suggestively this salesman dude is grinning at you. The logical choice would be comrades, right?

Tentatively, you reach out, your hand wavering slightly, and Laura’s heart shifts its pace, the sudden, subtle change in cadence striking you almost like a sharp, cool breeze, like something jerking you awake.

You lower your arm and clear your throat.

“Uh, you wanna choose?”

She stares momentarily, and nods, reaching out…
