My name is Cecile, and I'm sixteen years old. Though I'd like to think that my upbringing was pretty normal, my parents got a really good job offer last year that would force them to move to the opposite end of the country... and that was the end of my "normal childhood." And after reading that weird book that my best friend Mina had sent to my house, I myself can't even be called "normal" anymore.

I finally got Theresa to apologize to Mina... though Mina was the problem this time around. I definitely understand WHY she's mad, but... ugh. It's still a massive pain to deal with.

After that particular bit of drama was dealt with, I ended up eating lunch with Theresa and then we went to gym class.

And I got called out for checking out Theresa while she was changing. ...and I kind of do this all the time.

So it's not that a pervert-switch was flipped, it's just that I was made aware of the things that I'd already been doing this whole time.

Sure as hell doesn't make it any better, though.

"You're not... uh..." the gym teacher gives me an uncomfortable glance.
"N- no," I shake my head. "I'm just here for, uh... moral support?"
"Oh," he nods. "Well get out there and run, it's good for your heart."
"Yes sir!" I say, saluting to him.

I think he was in the army or something before he became a teacher, so a lot of the students here use military terms and salute and stuff when talking to him. I don't really get it myself, but it's kind of fun to do so I play along too.

Seeing as how I'm not joining Mina in her skipping adventure, I head over to the track with the other kids... and Theresa's near the front, doing some more stretches.

I am not going to ogle her this time.

"You gonna sprint the entire length of the track?" I ask as I approach her.
"Hm?" Theresa stops mid-stretch to see who's talking to her. "Very funny, Cecile. No, I'm just running like a normal person. When I push myself too hard, the girls from the track team start nagging me to join up again."
"Oh," I nod.
"What about you? You just gonna powerwalk around the track like you usually do?"
"Just a casual jog, I guess," I shrug.

1.
PHYSIOLOGY

"Well have fun with that," Theresa says as she finishes her stretching and then races off. I kind of wanted to ask her to hold up so that we could talk or something, but eh. I don't want to bug her.

And this way, I get a nice rear view of her running form... dammit, I really need to cut that out. I'm starting to feel like a creepy old man or something.

So instead, I run at my own pace... well, a little bit faster than I'm used to, actually. I should probably try and get my stamina up just in case I have to run away from another crazy triangle man, right?

Though I'd definitely be happy to never have to deal with anything like that.

After a little while, everyone running on the track ends up split up depending on how fast they are. Waaaay out front are Theresa and some kids from the track and basketball teams, I'm somewhere near the end of the middle group, and there's a ton of kids in the back. Mostly the chubbier kids and girls who don't feel like actually trying... not that I'm one to judge.

While I run, I look up at the sky... it's a nice clear day, not a cloud in the sky. And Mina's sitting on the bleachers, I think she's sleeping? Probably didn't get much sleep last night, judging from how tense she was this morning.

Yeah, this is kind of relaxing. Running and thinking about stuff and oh hey, there's Loki!

And I guess he notices me noticing him, as I'm met with a caw. Dunno if that Loki doing that himself, or if Charlotte's behind it... either way, it's still nice that she's even looking out for me here at school.

run

run run run

My feet are kind of starting to hurt.

"You feeling the burn yet, slowpoke?" someone calls out from behind me-
"Theresa?" I turn to my side, and there she is, keeping pace with me. "What, you already ran a full lap?"
"Yup!" she laughs. "In the time it took you to get not even halfway across... maybe you shouldn't be spending so much time checking out my 'athletic form,'" she says with a sly grin.

Of course she overheard what I said to Mina.

"Th... that was just..." I mumble, unsure how I'm going to get out of this one.
"I'm not mad or anything," Theresa laughs, "I'm actually kind of happy, to be honest."
"...why?"
"Well the girl I like's been checking out my sexy muscles," she says happily. "At least now I know that the physical attraction's there!"
"dammit theresa"
"What, would you prefer that I be mad at you eyeing me like a hungry wolf?"
"I- I wasn't doing that-"
"Yeah, yeah..." she sighs, "you're a good girl and that's why I like you!"

And with that last comment, Theresa speeds back up and leaves me in the dust... the jerk. I wish I could get back at her for that, but then I remember that I'm technically the one in the wrong for being a pervert and dammit allison why'd you have to say that crap this morning!?

Luckily, gym class ends before Theresa's able to lap me again and make feel uncomfortable some more, and we head back to the locker room to change. I still don't get why Mina didn't just pull her excuse before she changed, it would've saved her a lot of trouble...

The rest of the school day goes by uneventfully, thank God. I don't think I could handle any more embarrassment. Once the final bell rings, me and Mina rush out of our last-period classroom and make our way outside...

"Why's Andy the one picking you up again?" I ask.
"BEcause Marcus has class right now," Mina replies. "Andy isn't doing anything this time to day, so Marcus guilted him into it."
"Oh," I nod.

I remember Mina mentioning something about Andy holding off on going to college for a while until he saves up enough money to be independent or something. And he seems to enjoy his job, so I guess that's fine.

Kind of a shame though, his grades were always better than Marcus's.

I kind of want to talk to Mina about what she's going to do with the book, but now really isn't the place to be doing that. But we're going to her house like right now, so I can wait until then.

Taking a mental note to do just that, I follow Mina outside... and to a silver car. It's pretty nice.

"Hey, Mina!" Andy says, hopping out the car to say hi. "I am here to see you safely home, little princess!"
"Cut it out," Mina says, rolling her eyes.
"Oh, and you brought Cecile!" he waves at me. "You coming along too?"
"Yeah," I nod. "hope it's not too much trouble."

"New management?" I ask. I remember that Andy was working at some kind of fancy exclusive bar/restaurant-type establishment, but I didn't know it had new owners.
"Yeah," Andy replies. "The guy who started up the place got caught up in some shady stuff, so he had to sell it."
"And you guys weren't fired?" Mina asks.
"Nope!" he laughs. "All the staff gets to stay on, and we got bonuses for putting up with the transition period too!"
"Huh," I nod.

Andy doesn't get to brag about his job for too long, since the drive to Mina's house is only like five minutes. Once he pulls up into the driveway, we hop out of the car... and so does he?

"You needed to use our toilet or something?" Mina asks.
"Nah, Marcus got a new game in so we're gonna play it," Andy replies.
"But I thought he had class today," I say.
"That asshole..." Mina mutters under her breath. "He didn't have to bug Andy at all, he just didn't want to be distracted from his videogames!"

Haha, Marcus is gonna get it now...

Me and Andy follow Mina as she storms into her house, kicks off her shoes and heads straight to the kitchen where she sees her brother... cutting out coupons?

"Marcus!" Mina shouts as she enters the room.
"Oh hey," Marcus says, waving at his sister. "So Andy got you home okay?" And then he notices me standing behind her. "Didn't expect to see you here too, Cecile!"
"Hi," I say, waving sheepishly.

I know better than to involve myself in this crap.

"Forget about that!" Mina says, slamming her hand on the table for emphasis. "Why the hell did you bug ANDY into driving me home from school!? You didn't even bother going to class, so you could've done it yourself!"
"Well, y'know..." Marcus laughs nervously, "I had my own stuff to take care of and Andy didn't have anything better to do..."
"I really didn't," Andy chimes in.
"Such a dick..." Mina mumbles to herself as she turns around and grabs my hand. "We're going upstairs so you can just go ahead and be stupid down here with Andy."

As Mina pulls me along with her towards the stairs, Marcus calls out.

"You two can play with us if you want!" Marcus says. "It's a four-player game!"

Having turned Marcus's offer down (for now, anyways), Mina pulls me along with her to her room and then closes the door tightly behind her once we're both inside.

"I swear, that guy..." Mina grumbles as she falls onto her bed.
"C'mon, it's not that bad," I say with a nervous laugh. "you did get that ride, after all..."

Shit be dangerous, paranoia is good. Branches can pull all sorts of bullshit, and most of the ones we've encountered can be used to kill someone without leaving evidence.

Fill her in on the factions we know about, but make sure she knows there are others currently in the area, and more are sure to come. Tell her about pinwheel guy, and our dream involving him being a psycho teleporter.

Inquire if she's going to read the book, people are looking and if she's going to read it than doing it soon is good so she has more time to practice before things get too chaotic. And what she wants to do with it.

Tell her about Theresa wanting to be a kite-oh.
>>
>>33418647

Maybe not say exactly what Theresa is planning, but tell her about the fact that it seems highly likely that people with powers may put themselves in more danger by thinking that they are invincible with a certain power.

Also tell her that the majority of powers aren't great, and if she gets a bust then she can't exactly go back on it.

Why would we tell her this? She's a main character, she's practically guaranteed a good one.

And there's no reason not to tell her about Theresa either.

Dat metagaming!

But also what if we're wrong, and she DOESN'T get a good one? She would be in the same position she is in now, only she would be detectable by everyone.

Of course, this line of logic does make me want to consider what powers the other characters might get, like Allison.

A stealth branch like Theresa's could strike at any time with us being none the wiser.

Let's not think about that, okay? The thread is paranoid enough already.

"C... Cecile!?" Marcus turns to me. "Call the cops, hurry!"
"What happened, why's- oh my god," Mina stumbles back until she hits a wall. "A... Andy..."
"C'mon, please!" Marcus cries. "Someone call an ambulance before he bleeds out!"

Oh God it feels like my heart's about to explode but I have to stay calm and act rationally because

"M- Mina!" I spin around to face my horrified best friend. "You call the ambulance, I'll try and help out here!"
"oh my god oh my god"
"MINA!" I grab her by the shoulders and shake her.
"Wha- Y... yeah, I'll go find the phone!"

As Mina runs off to dial 911, I turn back towards... oh my god there's so much blood

"C'mon, Andy!" Marcus cries. Keep your head down so you don't choke on the blood!"

Though he's bleeding from the mouth really badly, I guess Andy has enough cognizance to do what Marcus said. But there's a stream of blood flowing from his mouth...

"Marcus, what happened!" I shout. "How did Andy end up like-"
"I don't fucking know!" Marcus shouts back as he tries to keep Andy positioned such that the blood flows onto the floor instead of down his throat. "We were playing my new game and talking about stuff, and then he just dropped his controller while mumbling something about 'liars'..."

>>
>>33419556

>>
He was mumbling about liars, what if that was referring to us lying about the books? SOMEONE IS ON TO US!
>>
Archibald might be behind this. He's the only one we know who's pissy enough to attack like this, and he might've called us liars. (About not having a book, presumably.)

But then, the attack itself doesn't really fit his MO. The slit throat, yeah. But Marcus would've seen the green doritos, and I think Archie has to be within eyeshot for those to work. Plus, no mind control.

Could be the (creepy) new guy, but we didn't tell him shit, and thus didn't lie to him.

Charlotte's ability could theoretically extend to humans, but I don't see how she'd be able to invisibly slit someone's throat.

The only one we know that CAN go invisible is Theresa, and she doesn't strike me as a yandere.

Our best bet's the new guy, if only because we don't know what his deal is yet. Still, the attacker might reveal themself soon enough anyway.
>>
>>33419547
Right. She wouldn't. Glad you agree.

Especially since she would have overheard that we favor her for bookening and wouldn't want to fuck that up.

...what?

"And then he walks into the kitchen and the next thing I know, he's screaming so I ran in here to see what he was doing AND HE CUT HIS FUCKING TONGUE OFF WITH THE SCISSORS I WAS JUST USING TO CUT FUCKING PIZZA COUPONS WITH!!" Marcus screams, pointing at a bloody pair of scissors lying on the floor.

I think I'm going to throw up.

"Did Mina call 911 yet!?" Marcus asks.
"I asked her to go find a phone so she could," I reply. "I... is there anything I can do to help in here?"
"I don't even know..." he takes a deep breath. "G... go get something to put his tongue in so the doctors can reattach it."

Without a word, I run over to the counter to get some paper towels to pick up Andy's... tongue with, then I rinse it off and wrap it in a dish towel before putting that in a plastic bag and then putting the whole thing in the fridge.

I -think- that's how they taught us in health class... I never thought I'd need to actually do it, though.

>ask Marcus something
>wait for the ambulance
>>
>>33419573
If it was Theresa it have a laceration or such, not internal injuries. Plus the mumbling about liars doesn't fit.

>>
>>33419573

Likely culprit is someone who can control minds, and knows about us, which would make it either big G or the Tree of Life. Power doesn't correlae with anyone we know, so it could be a new person... or we don't know the full extent of people's powers, or they've been lying to us what they're capable of.

So, to recap, since we had a mindbender spying and listening on us (hot damn that's sharp hearing, we were talking upstairs) the downfall is, either Gauthier or the Tree now knows that WE HAVE TWO BOOKS WE DIDN'T TELL THEM ABOUT. And holy shit we blabbed about how certain someone can turn invisible, so they know what to expect when they go to collect the other book.

One possible explanation: Charlotte went trance. arch did say most of her limits were self-imposed. He might have also said inability to control humans was a hard limit; I can't remember.

I said it, I tried to warn you all and nobody listened. If we had just allied up with Char rather then pissing around trying to sweet-talk our friends into trusting our girlfriend who they've met like once, while also lying to her about basically everything important, this might not be happening.

But now innocent bystanders are under attack by an enemy Stand and we can do dick fuck all to stop it.
>>
One thing's for sure, now that they've confirmed we have two books, they're gonna move pretty fast to grab them before they can be destroyed. Actually, another thing's for sure: when "they" come they won't be alone since they know what they're against.

We're fucked unless we ally with the other side. And we just have to hope we don't choose the side that just enacted invasion of the body snatchers.
>>
>>33421052
I'm 95% sure it was Pinwheel Dude, it just all fits way too nicely. We meet him, immediately have a crazy hyperdream, then one of our acquaintances comes down with a bad case of batshit insane.

Hypothesis: Pinwheel Dude caused the crazy dream for the purpose of causing us to panic, allowing him to gather information by psychically eavesdropping.

50/50 chance as to whether he's actually Dorito's buddy from the Sociopath Club, or if him working with Dorito in the dream was actually a deliberate falsehood to make sure we don't run to Irene's group for help.
>>
>>33421220
>Twist
>Pinwheel Dude is working with Charlotte
>>
>>33420030
Yeah but we said we were going to give them to her. Seems more likely that it is dorito tree.
>>
>>33421497
If it was the pinwheel dude, and if he - or whoever did this - is working for her, I'll have to tip hat to Char's method actor performance. As we know her, I can't imagine her ordering around psychos with homicidal tendencies, or ordering a hit by mindbending.
>>
>>33421582
Unless she's a member of the ten 'outcasts' Irene was jabbering about.
>>
>>33421663
Or he is? But in any case, the attack was from someone we know or someone from either group who has been made aware of what we've said; and thus able to understand that we're liars.
>>
>>33421718
I think running the fuck away and burning the books is our next order of business
>>
>>33421935
Calling Charlotte in a panic is our next order of business. If she's super angry we'll know who done it.
>>
>>33421220
It's not Pinwheel dude

We never lied to Pinwheel dude, we never TALKED to pinwheel dude, so unless he's with someone else while at the same time feeling betrayed, then it probably isn't him.

More likely Pinwheel dude is a mafia type and this is an undisclosed secondary power someone has.
