You are Sireyi Valyenya, 18 years old, you are on your first quest.

You have retrieved the Horn of Alzurad: a legendary artefact that can call dead heroes back to fight for the holder of the Horn. But now you’re lost on another plane, trying to find your way home.

You are currently deciding whether or not to accept a young dragon as your familiar.

also, should we heal him at least till he stops bleeding?
>>

He's going to kill himself and transfer the remnants of his power to us, that's his part of the deal.

>>33426177
There is no other choice. It will be a great boon for decades to come. Additionally, we will have a huge amount of willpower, inhumanly so, in the future. Furthermore, we have contacts to powerful beings, strong enough to let us control the dragon in the unlikely case that it will succumb to its dark nature despite our tutelage.
>>
>>33426276
we have a horn
>>
>>33426276
We have one on our person right now, we just can't use it until the barrier drops.
We will probably also have angels and divine influence start coming back into this world once there's an opportunity.
It'd also get rid of that annoying 'double divine power DE cost' effect that's happening right now.

His motivation is that Dragons live many millennia, and that the familiar will grow strong because of us. Basically, it's like giving your kid up to be a noble's squire, because you're dirt poor, and eventually that kid's going to have some serious power, land, and because you know they're intelligent, may even inherit if they can swing things. Or he can just let his offspring die.
>>33426177
Accept, because we can show the familiar that there are choices beyond it's wants and needs (and yes, I do have unused arguments on how treating everyone equally is the highest form of arrogance). "I accept."
>>
>>33426379
>Implying those are the result of genetics and not upbringing

It's not going to corrupt us and it won't be inherently a hyper-bastard to everyone else just because it's a black dragon is the only point I'm trying to make.

Blearax outright stated hatchling dragons were all love and trust, that would imply that it's the world and their parents that make them into cynical hyper-bastards.
>>
“Before I accept” you say “I want to know what your motivation is, why go to all this trouble just to get me to take this hatchling as a familiar?”

“What, an old dragon can’t dote on his something...something...grandchild?” he says innocently. You simply stare at him, as if sensing your skepticism he says “Alright, my most beloved grand-daughter extracted a promise from me that I’d never hurt any of her hatchlings under any circumstances, that I’d do everything I could to protect and nurture them until they grow up, I take my promises seriously” he pauses “And she made me accept a geas spell, the conniving little bitch.”

“Alright” you say “I accept”

“Very well” he says, “Now take out your cup.” You retrieve the cup from your backpack and he holds forth a dripping digit. You catch the blood in the cup and then slice your arm with a knife to add your own to it. Brearax says some words you don’t understand and you feel magical power swirl around the cup you have in your hands.

“Now we wait” says Brearax “For the little hatching to find his way”

As you wait you take out the magical items you have and lay them before the old dragon, he sniff them carefully, then licks them, leaving a generous coating of saliva on each one, lovely.

“The bracers” he says “boost the wearers strength, though I don’t know how much they will help you young paladin, with your powers.”

“The axe is a favoured weapon of the ogre god, called Maw, the devourer, horrible thing. Anyway, the axe is enchanted specially to hurt those smaller than the wielder and champions of good, it has no other powers, nor is it intelligent or likely to corrupt anyone.” He pauses “unless that person has an unhealthy obsession with axes anyway...”
>>
You don’t have to wait long before you hear the cracking of an eggshell and a small, lizard-like head pokes its way out of the acid pool.

Scrambling towards you the little dragonling squeaks at you as it approaches, you’re not sure if it’s greeting you or threatening you. It’s about the size of a housecat and it is a dull, wet black in colour.

“It’s so tiny” says Bokin in wonder, reaching towards it with one hand, you wave him back, it’s still covered in acid.

“Congratulations Paladin” says Brearax, “it’s a

“You have such a beautiful black hatchling, your parents must be so proud” he sniggers at some private joke. “Now drink, and let the hatchling have some too.”

You take a mouthful of the dragon/half-angel blood cocktail, it tastes foul and choking it down is hard. You kneel and offer the cup to the dragonling. It approaches cautiously, sniffing carefully, evidently it likes what it smells and it scampers forwards and jams its muzzle into the cup, slurping loudly. Whilst it’s distracted you take a rag and wipe of as much of the acid covering it as possible.

You can feel the blood you swallowed roiling in your gut, or maybe it’s something-

-else. You pick yourself up off the floor, Bokin is kneeling next to you, a look of concern on his face, the little dragon is bumping your hand with its head.

You can feel the dragon in the back of your head, you can feel it’s curiosity about everything, you can feel its attachment to you, like it always wants to be near you.

“It’s done” says Brearax with satisfaction “The two of you are joined, now what was I going to, oh yes, yes, I forgot”

“Forgot what?” you say suspiciously

“The stronger your powers become” he says “The faster she’ll grow, on her own it could be 50 years before she’s able to speak, with you, ah who knows.”

[Gaining dragon powers will speed the dragonlings growth]

“You didn’t think we let wizards take our young without a reason, did you?” he asks.

“Now, down to the second thing I want you to do.”

“What second thing?” you say suspiciously
>>
>>33426725
“Kill me” he says simply

“Are you mad?” you respond, “I’m not killing you.”

“Yes I am” he responds “And yes you are” he gestures around you “Look at this place, this squalor, will you condemn me to another 100 years of suffering, champion of Velya? Do all the lives I took, all the cities I despoiled condemn me to such a fate? Will you not grant me mercy?”

“There must be another way” you insist “I can heal you, maybe we can escape-”

“No” he shakes his head sadly, “Even free I’d not last more than a few years, I held on as long as I could to rescue the little one, I have no more fight in me, my time is done.”

“Alright, Bokin, take the hatchling and leave the room” you say “but-” he starts to object

“Bokin please” you say. He leaves without any further comment.

With Bokin carrying the little dragon out of the room, which seems to be whinging at being separated from you, you turn to Brearax. He lays his huge head down on the floor and twists sideways, exposing his throat, one good blow with your halberd should end it.

“I’d demand we make a battle of it” he whispers “But the noise would bring the ogres, and I haven’t the energy.”

A ruined eyesocket tries to wink at you “But if I were 100 years younger I would make you work so hard for it you’d be limping out of here exhausted and bleeding.”

“Any last words?” you ask

He ponders for a moment, then says wistfully “I wish I could have eaten one last virgin princess, they tasted the best.”

You bring your halberd down into the tender flesh of his throat, the thin faded scales there offering no protection.

A torrent of dark blood gushes forth, soaking you and knocking you off your feet, when you regain your footing the blood flow has slowed to a trickle, and you can’t hear Brearax breathing any more. You wait a few moments to ensure that he’s dead and then you leave. May Velya guide his soul to wherever he’s supposed to go.

Bokin is waiting outside, holding the hatchling in his hand, you realise you haven’t even named it yet. “Any ideas what to call the little one?” you ask Bokin

“Uh” he says thinking “how about Darkness of the Midnight Sky?” Wow, you had no idea the kid was so poetic

ebon
"ebony wood, ebony tree," mid-15c.; see ebony. Figurative sense of "dark, black" is from 1590s; in some cases a poetic shortening of ebony.

song (n.)
Old English sang "voice, song, art of singing; metrical composition adapted for singing, psalm, poem," from Proto-Germanic *sangwaz (from PIE *songwh-o- "singing, song," from *sengwh- "to sing, make an incantation" (see sing (v.)).

“I think I’ll call her Ebonsong” you say. Bokin hands Ebonsong over and she settles around your neck like a scaly collar, licking blood off you. The three of you leave the ogre stronghold.

You make sure you put plenty of distance between the stronghold and yourselves to make camp. Later that night in your camp, after you’ve washed yourself in the show, and Ebonsong lies asleep on your lap, Bokin turns to you with a troubled look in his eyes as he shuffles into his bedroll, he’s taken his armband off and is now his full size.

“Sireyi” he says “Why did you kill Brearax, I mean, he was helpless, isn’t that murder?”

“How so?” he asks “I mean, aren’t you supposed to save everyone?”

“I wish I could” you say softly “I wish everyone lived happy, peaceful lives with no suffering, but the world doesn’t work like that. Do I regret killing him? Yes, absolutely, but” you stare Bokin in the eyes, trying to impress on him the importance of your point “No one should have to endure what he had, no matter their sins, by killing him, I set him free.”

“Further, he had the right to choose his own end” you say “He wished for me to end his life. He would have made sure he dies either way, this way he no longer needed to suffer long. [Bokin Loyalty +1]

The next morning you wake up with a dragon hatchling curled around your neck. Ebonsong squeaks in protest when you gently unwind her and rise, leaving her in your blankets to keep sleeping.

You now have a choice to make, with your new abilities, you won’t be so obvious to the half-demons of the Empire of Drache you could try to find your ‘dark sister’ using the name House Valyenya as a lead, or you could head to the Island of Storms.

Whilst you ponder your choice, Bokin comes walking up to you, it looks like he’s made a special effort to brush his clothes clean and straighten his hair. He’s currently in his smaller, 10ft tall form.

“I’ve been thinking about what happened in the ogre lair” he says, seems like he’s prepared a speech “and I’ve come to a decision about something” with a sinking feeling you think you can guess where this is going. “You saved me and I owe my life to you.” He goes down on one knee and holds his greatsword out to you in both hands.

This had better not be a marriage proposal.

1/2
>>
>>33428181
“I pledge to serve you always as best as I can” he recites “I will honour and obey you as your faithful knight forevermore.”

Oh that’s a relief. Still, he’s just a kid and is rushing into something he may regret. As a member of a noble family you know how knights pledge to lords, you also know that, not holding a title yourself, you cannot swear knights to your service.

Under Church law as a Paladin you can accept church soldiers into your service. Of course, both of those depend upon the laws of the Kingdom of Dornmer where you grew up, and you’re not in Dornmer anymore.

How do you respond?
>Don’t be silly Bokin
>I’m not actually allowed to accept such an oath, officially
>That’s very thoughtful of you, but I cannot accept
>You saved my life too Bokin, I’d say we’re equal
>You’re my ally Bokin, of course I’d save your life, and I’d hope you do the same for me
>I accept your service Bokin (solemn)
>I accept your service Bokin, your first task is to wash the dishes
>Other

And finally, where do you intend to journey next?
>Dark Sister (Empire of Drache)
>Island of Storms (along the coast)

Can we just learn these spells by purchasing them or do we need someone to teach them to us?
Some interesting spells:
>Identify: Determines properties of magic item.
>Obscure: Masks object against scrying.
>Resist Energy: Resistant to specified energy type.
>Rainbow scales (N) Shining Scales: Your scales turn all the colours of the rainbow. Grants increased damage reduction and magic resistance. Requires Aspect of the Dragon to be active.
>(N) Suffer Not the Heretic: Your smite attack deals extra damage to evil spellcasters who draw power from demon lords or evil gods, lasts for 1 smite attack but takes no action to cast.

At least the last two should be bought immediately for 1exp.

Angel's Magic -1 AXP -7 GXP
XP discounts, bonus arcane energy, +1 will.

That would just leave us with the Special XP pool for buying spells.
I also want to make sure we get that universal 2XP discount to all spell purchases from AM2

Also I'm going to need more firm rules on exactly how what degrees of discount work at each level of spell cost
before I start trying to figure out how to spend that.
>>
>>33428228
As a sorcerer you simply intuit spells, developing magic as you would any other talent.

You specifically CANNOT learn them as a wizard does - by studying books and scrolls.

Of course, by seeing a spell or reading about it, you could then develop it yourself

>Also I'm going to need more firm rules on exactly how what degrees of discount work at each level of spell cost

Every 1 XP cost below 1XP you reduce a spells cost gets you an extra spell of that level.

i.e. 1XP -1XP = 2 spells for 1XP
1XP -2XP = 3 spells for 1XP
1XP -3XP = 4 spells for 1XP

As the two of you travel through the mountains, it’s going to be 2 weeks before you get to the coast. You’ve noticed that as big and strong as Bokin is, he’s just a kid, and hasn’t had proper military training.

Perhaps it’s best if you spent some time teaching him a few things...about combat.

You decide to teach Bokin how to fight in melee, and encourage him to develop him magical abilities.

As you approach the coast you are heading down hill out of the mountains you spot a couple of things.

Firstly, in the distance, on the horizon you can see the an island with a storm cloud nearby – if that’s not the Island of Storm, you’ll eat your halberd. It’s about 20 miles distant from your current location, but maybe 15 from the coastline, you could probably teleport yourself and Bokin over, but getting closer wouldn’t hurt.

[Note: Ebonsong can teleport with you at no extra cost, as your familiar, for most beneficial magical effects she counts as being part of you, as long as the two of you are touching]

Secondly, you can see a large port town on the coast, with ships of all sizes there. Maybe you won’t need to teleport there.

You notice the flags flying above the town are the same as those used by the demon army from the mountains. The Empire of Drache.

Maybe you will need to teleport there.

It’s currently mid-morning and the town is only a few miles away, you could easily get there before midday.

Roll willpower please, 1d20+4, and then we vote on options (may change as a result of willpower roll)

>>33429536

We are a paladin, taking risks to fight evil is what we do. And we have passable disguise now on top of that hat. Still, let's see what OP has in store.
>>
>Success (just)

With your newly-developed magical powers, you would not normally be able to sense this over such a great distance.

But storms are totally your thing.

That storm is magical, and more importantly it feels...protective to you, like it's on guard, ready to attack anything that gets near the island.

You're not sure if it will (or can) affect your ability to Ride the Lightning.

Maybe it won't see you as a threat, maybe it will.

Maybe it can't block (or divert) your teleportation, maybe it can. Who can say for sure?

All you know is: it's magic, it's guarding the island, it's a storm.

Choices, choices

>Ride The Lightning from the coast (15 miles)
>Go to the town (in disguise, obviously)

RTL is teleporting.
We would teleport onto the island, through the storm.
>>
>>33429730

Yeah, the storm seems angry, angry about demons presumably. That's why I want to fly closer, to see if we can sense more about it.
>>
>>33429666
yup, with Bokin either waiting outside, or using the Hat to pretend to be an ogre (you saw the Army using ogre mercenaries)

Flying closer to the storm is an option, yes. In fact with your speed it wouldn't take long at all.
>>
OK, so, spells. I'm going to start with level two, because fuck all of you for me having to be the one to do this:
-2 SXP
>Arcane Sight
>Scrying
>Dimension Door
>Dispel Magic

I think sticking mostly to utility spells would be best for our first bunch of spells

Now for L1 (fuck you all):
>Identify (Using unidentified loot: not even once)
>Speed (In case we need to flee on foot)
>Alarm (to avoid being ambushed while we recover DE)

L1 N spells:
>Shining Scales
>Thunderclap
>Suffer Not The Heretic

Also, just saying OP, making us partially waste XP because of our discount being too huge is a little bit infuriating and heretical.
All would be forgiven, under the condition that if you add any new L1 N spells in the future, we can spend the 'wasted' piece of XP to get one of our choice for free.

If anyone has any spells they'd prefer instead of certain ones in either level, please object so we can discuss the relative merits of the spells.

>>33430394
Do we really need that kind of attention? For all we know the island has spies from the demon empire.
>>
Leaving Ebonsong with Bokin you fly out over the waters, heading for the island. As you get close, within a few miles, part of the stormcloud breaks off and heads in your direction.

Moving quickly, it interposes itself between you and the island. This close you get the feeling that the storm isn’t hostile to you, but nonetheless it is keeping itself between you and the island.

You can see a sizeable settlement on the island, people going about their business, and fishing boats floating close to the island, none of them seem bothered by the constant storm nearby.

Maybe it only attacks demons, or people wanting to harm the place?

You could fly back to the mainland, try to use your speed to get around this little stormcloud, force your way past it using your storm powers or approach slowly, focusing on being friendly and non-threatening.

Hello storm, will you let me through due to muh heritage?

You approach the storm slowly, trying to appear as non-threatening as possible. Your own personal stormcloud doesn’t move and you slowly glide straight through it,

It lets you pass without attacking you.

You fly over the island and you can see a large town surrounding a castle set high upon a hill.

No one in the town seems to notice you, but as you approach the castle you see a score of archers with arrows ready, though they haven’t drawn their bows yet,

On the battlements next to them is an older man in courtiers robes, he shouts up at you.

“Who are you and what business do you have here? If you do not land and submit to the authority of her Royal Highness Sofia of House Jalweyen then we will be forced to consider you hostile.”

“Very well” you say, unslinging your halberd and offering it to him. A guardsman steps forward to take it.

“Follow me this way” says the courtier. Leading you down the stairs and across the courtyard into the castle proper. As he does so a dozen armed guardsmen accompany you, including the one carrying your Halberd. They stick very close to you.

When you walk under the portcullis into the castle, you sense it. You can’t believe you didn’t sense it before, your panicking mind can only rationalise it that it must have been warded before and you just stepped across the ward. The gatehouse roof is overhead and you can no longer see the sky.

Up ahead, coming from the main castle building is the strongest evil you’ve ever sensed in your entire life.

Its wonder this place hasn’t fallen into Hell. It’s a wonder your skull hasn’t split under the pressure. It’s only a single signature of evil, coming from somewhere deep in the castle but it’s terrifying.

You sense....true evil (Evil, Magic, Demon, Demon Lord, Death, Slavery, Tyranny, Necromancy, Domination, Pain, Torture, Corruption, Sadism, ???, ???, ???)

The courtier, and the soldiers around you, seem completely unfazed by it and march onwards, with you in their midst.

What have you gotten yourself into?

Thread end. Thank you for playing. See you in 12 hours.

Next....non-canon stuff.

Well, guess we found the 'great evil'.
Only question now, whose life will we have to sacrifice to prevent it from escaping?

I know that we're going to try and solve this in a no-sacrifices make-our-own-fate kind of way, but I want to be sure we're all on the same page:
If it comes down to it, letting an evil so terrible that even our Detect Evil can't identify the extent of it's vile deeds go is not happening, no matter what.

The following events are non-canon.

A 'what might have been'.

You visited the Dropped Cloth in disguise, whilst looking for Trader (Smuggler) Jisan.

But what if you had visited in your natural form.....

Inside the tavern are three long stages with tables lined up alongside each one. At the end of each stage a long metal pole runs from the floor of the stage up to the ceiling.

This early in the day there are only a few patrons, and only 1 woman dancing on a stage, she looks like she's new - she keeps missing steps and the few patrons don't seem too interested. At this point she still has all of her clothes on.

You ask one of the serving girls about the owner of the establishment and a few minutes later a very fat woman wearing far too much make-up and far too many rings on her fingers and through her ears comes out to see you.

"Yes, yes!" She exclaims as she catches sight of you "I can see why you came to see Mama Sallie. Child I can make you a star! That hair, those hips, that skin, those breasts, and those wings!"

She ushers you into a office "Here's how it will work, we'll start you off as a once a week exotic act whilst you get used to the dances and before the years end you'll be headlining the shows."

"For private ah...performances you'll service only the wealthiest clients, and only those known to be pox-free."

>I’m looking for Trader Jisan

"Oh well, yes he's here quite often, but he's a private man." A crafty look enters her eyes "I couldn't possibly draw trouble down on him, unless of course you were one of my girls, I look after my girls."

>I can pay you

Ignoring the money you offer she changes tactics. "Alright, no permanent contract just a single dance, come back tonight and do a single dance and I'll give him to you on a silver plate, I'll have a girl lure him into a private room so you can talk to him. We'll put you in a mask and a few wires on those wings so it looks like a costume, no one will know it’s you."

We'll act according to circumstances. However I see your eagerness to lay down innocent lives in the name of "greater good" as troublesome.
>>
>If you agree

How did you get talked into this? Some of the other girls show you some moves that afternoon and that evening you are ready to perform.

There’s a large and raucous crowd in the Dropped Cloth this evening. Even backstage you can hear the explicit comments and one girl coming back to the changing room from her set is wiping beer off her naked body and complaining. Well, nothing to be done now, best get out on stage.

Alright, if you’re going to dance, how will you do it?

>Nervous/Shy, this is embarrassing
>Grit teeth, just follow the dance moves and get through it.
>Throw Your Hips into it, if I’m going to dance, might as well have fun
>>
>Nervous/Shy, this is embarrassing

You start slow and nervous, moving down the stage quietly, an ethereal vision of perfection. The wall of noise hits you and you feel everyone’s eyes on you as your pale cheeks flame red. You start to dance and the noise subsides as you captivate the audience.
Despite the strident music you move slowly and gracefully, dancing your way through the moves you have been taught with hesitant, delicate perfection.
As the room falls silent you gather your courage and approach the pole at the end of the stage, holding it with one hand and then the other as you slide smoothly around it.
As you twist around the pole you move higher up it, using your wings to cheat a little, then you leap away from the pole, gliding back down to the stage, ending in a crouch, your arms drawn around you protectively, a timid expression on your face as your wings mantle, trying and failing to cover your semi-nude body.

The crowd is silent for a moment more and then bursts into noise, cheers, tears of joy, demands for an encore, claims of undying love and religious hysteria. You head back stage, thankful that it’s over.

Before you leave on your ship you hear rumours of an angel appearing in a seedy tavern in the city has inspired dozens of copycat dances, it seems every showgirl in the city is now looking for a good pair of fake wings. On the dock front several artists are hawking paintings of the ‘Angel of Love’. They’re not very good, your hips aren’t that wide, nor are your nipples that shade of pink.

Hopefully they’ll have forgotten you by the time you return.
>>
>Grit teeth, just follow the dance moves and get through it.

You just decide to grin and bear it, you move through the dance moves you have been taught with grim precision, ignoring the explicit comments and suggestions from the audience, finally, feeling slightly soiled, you head backstage.

>Throw Your Hips into it, if I’m going to dance, might as well have fun

You decide to go all out. You stalk onto stage like a predator, your wings high above you. Walking down the stage like you own the place you move through your dance set with real gusto, using your assets to your advantage.
The crowd is very appreciative, cheering you on and throwing coins on stage.
As you jiggle and gyrate you make full use of the pole, curling around it like a lover and teasing the crowd with what your athletic body is capable of, if only you were in a more...intimate setting.
For your finale you drop to your knees, one hand on the pole is all that’s keeping you upright as you slowly lean over backwards until you are supine on the stage, writhing as you lay down.
One man near the stage, who is a little too old to be in the Dropped Cloth, cries out with tears in his eyes “I have seen perfection!” before slumping to the floor. Nearby patrons check if he is still alive and, once satisfied he’s dead, check his pockets for money.
To cries of pleasure, cries for an encore, and one man removing his trousers and throwing them on stage, you leave, breathing heavily and feeling oddly hot for some reason.

Now that all assumes good dance (Fellowship) rolls, a failure would have you booed off stage and a critfail...

It's not eagerness, I don't *want* to do such a thing and I'm willing to go to extreme lengths to avoid it.
I *wish* we could do this without the sacrifice of innocents, but life is rarely so ideal.
If it comes down to a choice between the life of a single innocent and the lives of everyone on the Island of Storms, I would choose the people.
>>
Critfail
As you move through your dance routine you lean a little too close to the crowd and an errant hand snags on your tiny costume, with a horrible tearing noise the whole thing comes off, revealing your....everything to the crowd. Your impromptu nakedness elicits a very positive reaction from the crowd as you flee backstage in embarrassment, your wings wrapped protectively around you. The guards quickly grab the person the hand is attached too and throw him out.

Party Reactions (if present)
Staring up at you, all thoughts of watching for Trader Jisan forgotten, Isla seems to be having trouble breathing, her chest moving up and down and her cheeks are flushed. After a long silent struggle she rushes to the ladies water closet. Perhaps she had too much to drink?

Initially splitting her attention between watching for Jisan and the crowd, Jianxi’s attention is drawn more and more to you. As you complete your finale, she is oblivious to anything but you, her eyes locked on you, her head turning to follow you as you move, like a mouse frozen before a snake. Her cheeks burning she realises what she’s doing once the show is over and makes a show of adjusting her clothes, before fading back into the crowd.

Matthias initially plays the part of lecher well, cheering you on with suggestive comments. As your dance progresses he gets quieter and quieter, until his face is a frozen mask. At the climax of your dance he’s sat with his legs crossed and gripping his beer mug so hard he’s crushing it. As you head backstage you see a damp stain on the front of his pants. He shouldn’t have held that mug so hard; he must have spilt his beer on himself.

End

Sireyi danced so well, she killed someone.

Also:

That is not the body-type chargen anon chose.
Although I guess Curvy and Athletic aren't mutually exclusive, and Sireyi has a pretty active lifestyle.

I outright said that taking a third option would be the best result, if we can do that it just makes it one of those rare times.
We're on the same side, I'm just making sure everyone knows what we have to do in the absolute worst case scenario.

She knows that she gets a disproportionate amount of proposals and everyone develops a crush on her.
I wouldn't be surprised if she suspected the reason why.
She's not completely oblivious to what sex is, that was a different option entirely during Chargen.
