You wake up slowly, strands of hair stuck to your eyes and face. You brush them aside as you adjust to the near-darkness.

The sun is out of sight, no longer over Lake Michigan. It must be mid-afternoon at least.

You have plans. Had plans?

You rub your eyes. You don’t remember. A fight with Wendy? That seems likely. You don’t remember that either.

You look down. You’re still wearing your pants and shirt from the jobsite earlier today. You take a testing sniff of the air and clothes.

Whole room smells like powder. You’ll probably want to change these sheets.

You sit up and lean against the headboard of the bed and wall and think.

Read or start a diary, wtf were you doing these past few days?

I was in school five days a week for all of June and the last week of May. Lots of time/energy went into that.

Took a week or two (three?) off after that to decompress/watch the dota 2 tournament.

Now I'm back (until my fall semester starts anyways. I should be able to make time to run a thread once a week with the regular 16 week semester)!

You don’t read much. You write even less than that. Most of what you did write were Army forms. Forms going in, forms going out, forms in the middle. A lot of forms had to be filled out. Sometimes the same form twice or even three times.

At least this new job has less paperwork.

But you were thinking about reading. Or writing. What would you even write?

Dear diary. Today I was paid money to kill teenagers. I don’t feel well.

Maybe reading is more your speed. The screen of your phone is maybe a bit small. You hold it to your face and look at the screen intently.

You don’t even know where to start. You stare at it blankly.

You’ve never read a crime drama before. You were never encouraged to. Heist movies and bank robberies were not reinforced.

You wonder if what you do is illegal. Probably not.

Probably.

Maybe law enforcement is paid to stay out of it.

It’s probably ethically wrong.

Whatever it is, it makes you feel terrible.

But it probably makes a great book.

Law enforcement. You already live the life of the other side. You pick one randomly from the list, the names and reviews meaning nothing to you. At least it seems highly rated.

You begin The Still Beating Heart.

Karan raises some of the lights for you autonomously. You mumble something in response.

Wasn’t Wendy here at the house with you?

You put the device in your pocket. You should probably see if Wendy’s still here or what she’s doing before you run and hide from your problems again.

“Wendy?”

“Wendy!”

You head downstairs. The coolness of the flooring feels good through your socks.

“Wendy!”

She’s ignoring you or not here.

Maybe she just can’t hear you.

You’re in the kitchen staring out over the lake when Karan suddenly visualizes directly in your field of view.

“Good afternoon, Michelle. Did you know that you were asleep for one hundred twelve minutes and eighteen seconds? Of those minutes you spent only ten minutes engaged in a rem cycle. That is less than the human average. Did you know that? Multiple studies from the early 00s discovered that humans are required to dream in order to maintain their sanity. In even as little as three or four dreamless days significant decreases in the patients were noted.

They died in eight. Would you like to hear the audio from the final day? It’s publically available. I think it’s interesting.”

You …

You rub your eyes and forehead. What?

“Where’s Wendy, Karan.”

She seems slighted. “She is most likely still on the beach. I cannot see down there. She came up briefly to collect what wine was available and returned.”

“Thank you Karan.”

She seems...slightly less offended.

“Is there a way to fix my sleep thing?”

“Unlikely to impossible. Any uneasiness in your sleeping patterns is most likely psychological stemming from your service rather than physiological.

How do you feel about invasive brain surgery to forcibly destroy the neurons forming your memories?”

You, uh…

Whatever.

There isn’t much food in the house yet, but there’s a loaf of bread. You guess that’ll do. Besides, she’s been drinking.

You’re going to give Wendy some space. She’s probably pretty trashed and she’s already mean sober. Pissed Wendy is probably even worse.

You tuck your knees under your chin on the couch and continue to read.

You read for what feels like a long, long time and Wendy still hasn’t surfaced.

You check the chronos mounted in a number of devices. It’s been at least thirty minutes.

You begin panicking internally. You remember the look of fear on Wendy’s face when she got grappled at your first jobsite.

You put your phone away.

Karan helpfully(?) displays a map for you the location of the bodies of the last twenty murder victims, in addition to displaying footage from around the house. Wendy’s car is still parked where it was, and it doesn’t seem disturbed.

You take the elevator down and fidget violently as the small car takes you down to your private beach. You step out.

“Wendy! Wendy!”

There’s...nothing. You quickly check the water.

You don’t see any bodies floating limply at a glance. You walk around the rest of the house and...there she is.

Wendy is in the tub, surrounded by wine bottle...s?

You recognize the first one, which you split. You recognize the second one, which is identical to the first one, an-

Oh my god. You gag and bring a hand up to cover your mouth and nose reflexively.

You think a little bit got on your tongue. You try to manage your gag reflex as your eyes scan the entire scene.

Yep, that’s vomit. Suddenly it’s a little clearer why Wendy keeps a servant around as you step around an enormous puddle of vomit slowly sinking into the sand next to her and the tub.

In addition, there’s also a not-insignificant amount sharing the tub with her, plus a fair amount of sand. Maybe she scraped it in.

Wendy herself seems to be in poor condition. Her face is dirty and she’s lying on her back, her head resting horizontally and her face pointing towards the sky.

You wonder if she might be dead. Hmm.

What’s company policy for when employees die away from the event?

“Wendy.”

“Hey, Wendy.”

You poke your toe into her arm and her head rolls to the side limply, some additional liquid dribbling out of the corners of her mouth.

Oh. Shit.

Okay...okay, just breathe. It’s just like a heroin overdose, right?

Yeah. Just like that. You can deal with tha-

Why isn’t she breathing?

SHIT.

Just stay cool Michelle. You scream, internally.

You check for her pulse by grabbing her arm and feeling her wrist and you don’t feel anything oh god wait a second this is your prosthetic you couldn’t feel a pulse anyways. Whoops.

You swap hands.

You still don’t feel anything, but it could be because the adrenaline spike is making all the sensations of touch even more uncomfortable than they usually are for you.

Breathing. You can handle that.

You put your ear close to her throat and don’t hear anything.

Panic!

Okay, uh…

Airway! Gotta clean the airway!

You lean over and grab Wendy by her armpits and pull her out of the tub, and squeeze her stomach trying to force any air (and vomit) out. You aim it away from your body.

A mouthful of liquid gushes out. You drop Wendy back into the tub and within a few moments you can see her begin gasping for air and clawing at the stone of the tub and the sand that it’s set into.

You squat down and observe now that there are signs of life.

Maybe you should drag her in?

Her nails look sharp. And chipped and broken. You already have enough scrapes and scars.

You keep squatting, finding a comfortable position as Wendy coughs and chokes her way back into living.

She spits into the sand and landscaping several times before wiping her mouth with a very disgusted look.

“What the fuck, Michelle?”

Jesus fucking Christ. Of course she blames you. Whatever.
You pull her up, roughly, onto your shoulder (ab)using the fact that carbon fiber is significantly less pliable than skin and hustle her upstairs.

You deposit her into one of the bathtubs on the first floor, not wanting to get...Wendy all over the house and your new furniture.

You stand over Wendy, looking down at her, feeling...concern?

Maybe. Compassion?

She is, after all, your...friend. Mostly. Sort of.

More of a friend than anyone else has been in a while, anyways. Skyler, too, but he wasn’t the one who puked all over himself in your bathtub on the beach.

That seems like a uniquely Wendy thing to do.

You hold your arm out, close to the controls for the water. “Hot or cold?”

Wendy tries to clean a hand on her skirt, but doesn’t get much done and rubs her face with it. “Hot. Steam the shit out of me.”

You do as she asks and say, “I’ll bring you some towels or… Yeah.”

Wendy doesn’t move, but she looks away from you as you turn around and leave the room.

She calls, before you close the door behind you, “Michelle.”

You pause.

“...thanks.”

“Yeah.”

You shut the door and let Wendy take care of herself.

“Karan.”

She floats, less violently than last time, into your view. She looks...preoccupied. As if you disturbed her from a more important task.

“Yes Michelle?”

“Can you please order some food to be delivered?”

“What kind, Michelle? Do you want raw ingredients? Should I find a subscription service and submit a CSA on your behalf? I could do that. I am already filtering through several highly rated services. I obviously cannot recommend any one in particular but some of these business are rated highly.

Did you know that MSG is not banned in Echo City? Intriguing. The food lobby fought very hard in order to keep its usage within city confines.

Or would you prefer a delivery service for meals ready to eat? I see many that require heating first, but even some that are either self-heating or require none.

Did you know that Echo City’s food standards are more relaxed than the outlying countries? By law beef is only required to be ninety percent beef.

I wonder what it is like to eat. Have you ever tasted the flesh of man, Michelle? I know you were in Afghanistan and I am also well aware of the far below freezing temperatures and inavailability of common goods, including food.

Did you know that a common euphemism for cannibalism is “long pork”?

I wonder what long pork tastes like.

Michelle, do you know if humans are red or white meat?”

Also make sure any of the beef is one hundred beef. And that the pork is all pork and the chicken is all chicken.”

“Right away, Michelle.”

Music that you don’t know the name of or the words to begins playing throughout the house as you push up with your elbows and shoulders and walk to a row of cabinets in the hallway that have now been freshly stocked with towels, linens, and other necessary things.

You knock on the door to the bathroom Wendy is destroying.

“Hey, Wendy.”

“What?”

“I brought towels.”
There’s a pause. Does she really have to think about this?

“Fine. You can come in. You better not look or whatever, you stupid dyke.”

You sigh and push your way in, fighting your way through a thick cloud of steam to deposit the towels on top of the marble counter that forms the cabinets and houses the sink.

I don't want to actually propagate any of the characters being anything other than heterosexual but there's a reason support groups are such powerful tools for people with a problem or a past - they tend to only be able identify and empathize with people who share that or a similar experience. even something like AA is indicative of this, but you go deeper into veteran support groups (or groups of vets self-medicating amongst themselves) and it's even more powerful.

I doubt gender matters much when there's only a handful of people who can truly empathize with you.
