You are riding your moped through darkening woods, the headlight of your vehicle illuminating the old dirt roads while your newly bound familiar is following you among the trees.

You are the heir of Aaflyn bloodline and a mage with affinity of flesh.
From your hip hangs a grimoire left to you by your grandfather containing magical knowledge of your ancestors.

Today has been eventful; you had a breakfast with a friend you hadn’t seen in years, called your landlord and lied about the circumstances surrounding the destruction of your apartment, got interrogated by police, studied magic and bound your first familiar, a crow you have yet to give a name for.

You exit the woods as the dirt changes to asphalt.

>Where are you headed to?

[] Cecil’s apartment; it’s getting late and that’s where your stuff is.
[] Your father’s place; you’re already out of town so you might as well pay your family a visit.
[] Back to your ruined apartment; maybe you can sneak in and grab some stuff.
[] A convenience store; you haven’t eaten anything since breakfast.
[] Somewhere else? [Write-in]

Name wise I'm not partial to much of anything, and there is always asking it what name it likes the sound of.
Bond wise, I am all for Independent host, gives us the most communication and a way to throw magic around without being there in person.

So I'm having horror/whyboner flashes of Cecil hiveminded into a bevy of other girls so that she can be a forever waifu with whatever body we want at the time. But thats full on supervillain tier evil.

[X] Convenience store food and home.

You head back into the city, stopping by a convenience store to pick up a pre-heated meal and a bottle of water you eat in the parking lot.
With your hunger sated you ride towards your destroyed apartment.

You arrive to the building to find the road next to your window closed and police tape covering the building’s door. All lights seem to be out as well, possibly due to the water damage caused by last night’s rain.
You don’t see any officers nearby and the tarp has been taken from the now clean wall of the opposite building.

You still have your keys, so you could just waltz in through the front door, though you know there’s a security camera in near the entrance.

>Your room is in the 5th floor, how do you plan to get there?

[] Through the front door.
[] You have a plan… (Write-in.)

>Host, Independent
I can see the advantages.
But I also think a Hive murder of crows would be useful.
In fact, a Hive murder and a Hive of rats, to give us recon and early warning capabilities over an area sounds great.
>>
>>33469828
Is there a back door or side entrance we can use?

With the police suspicious, and the prevalence of surveillance tech in the modern First World, I think we should accept the loss of our stuff in our apartment for the time being, and go back to Cecil's. We can call the police if we can get our stuff from our apartment, so that we won't get tagged for interfering with a crime scene.
>>
>>33469828
Uh... hmm. That is a complication.

Didn't that fireball guy fly or something? We should really look up flying.
>>
>>33469651
Things as in inanimate objects? Not familiar bonds, though you can learn to make enchantments that allow you to contol something remotely and such.

Also, on the nature of 'Host'-bond:
It's normally considered 'independent', though if something happens to you while you're possessing it, any damage that happens to your real body is also applied to the familiar, thus the '/dependent' in the bin.
>>
>>33469953
But not vice versa, if it dies while possessed?

>Hide object, 3rd circle (1 hour preparaton): Makes selected individuals ignore the target.
I don't suppose this permits 'selected individuals' to be 'anybody', or object to be 'self'.

Or if it works on cameras.
>>
>>33469828
We have a right to be here yes? And we're just picking up mundane things? Why not just walk in to see what of our life we can salvage?
Though the police tape makes me wanna call the cops to let them know first.

Also, would a hive mind keep US alive?
>>
>>33470008
>We have a right to be here yes?
The police tape makes this an active crime scene, which means that we could be arrested, yes, if we go in unescorted.
And remember that we only rent an apartment; the landlord is the owner of the property and could declare us as trespassing.
>>
>>33470063
In that case I'm all for laying low and going through the proper channels so we get our stuff legit to avoid suspicion.
>>
>>33470002
If it dies while possessed you feel the pain, along with some other related unpleasantries but you don't actually die.

>>33470008
If you link yourself to the hivemind? Yes. Though it would also mean you share senses with the linked familiars that would be in your head, which may have effects on your mental health and you can't cast (most) spells without your own body.
>>
>>33470002
Also, Hide object can be used on self but you have to specify the target. The effect isn't as much invisibility, as it's 'ignore me'.

[X] On second thought…

For a moment you try to think of possible ways of getting past the camera and any possible officers in the building or just calling them to let you in but in the end you decide against it; they seem to be suspicious of you already and you really don’t feel like giving them any more reasons for it.

You starting the moped again, heading to Cecil’s apartment instead.

You press the intercom to inform Cecil of your arrival and enter the building. By the time you are at the door she’s already waiting for you, giving you a look of displeasure.
For a moment you wonder what may be the cause of it, quickly realizing it’s already dusk and you promised to cook for her during your stay.

You decide to cook noodles with frozen vegetables and the leftover meat from the breakfast. This seems to satisfy your host as she keeps eating the meal with small yet quick bites until there is nothing left. You wonder how that much food can fit in such a small frame as you hear something knock on the window.

Your familiar is standing outside, giving you a questioning look.

>What do you do?

[] Let it in; tell Cecil you’ve taken up training birds in your spare time.

[X] Cecil, bird. Bird, Cecil.

“Excuse me.” You say to her as you get up and walk up to the window, opening it and letting the crow fly into the room. Cecil is startled by the sudden movement, though after the initial scare she begins to curiously study the bird that has settled on a knob of the kitchen cupboard.

“I took up training birds a while back and this guy seems to have followed me here.” You explain, technically not lying.

Cecil gives you a slow nod without breaking eye-contact with the animal.

The bird looks at the girl with as curious look in its eyes as both of them tilt their heads slightly. The staring contest finally ends after five or so minutes with some kind of mutual understanding.

“Do you mind if it stays here too?”

“Umhn.” She mumbles and shakes her head. ”It’s fine.”

She takes the plate with some leftovers and raises it higher towards the bird. It looks at the plate, then at you. You give it a slight nod and the crow flies on the plate and takes some small pieces of meat off it. Cecil looks at it eat for a moment before turning to you. “Tame.” She whispers.

[X] Small talk.

You relax on the couch, lying against the back rest. “So, how was your day?”

It was…” The girl who had turned her attention back to the bird thinks for a moment. “fine.”

“What did you do? Got any hobbies?” You inquire.

“No…?” She mumbles with questioning tone. “Not really.”

Your familiar seems to have finished Cecil’s offering as it takes flight, landing on your left arm that’s lying on the back rest. “I…” She stops to think again, staring into nothingness. “watched TV…”
You pet the bird and it rubs its feathers against your hand. “read forums and…”
Your familiar cries softly as you rub it under the neck. “…watched anime.” She finally finishes and turns to give you a look that asks ‘and you?’.

“Well, getting the whole apartment thing figured out took most of my day. I also got some exercising done and went into the woods to feed birds.”

You can have as many familiars as you want and have a different bond with each.

The benefit of hivemind is that it gives you multiple familiars capable of acting together, though they become reliant on each other, meaning their individual performance is worse.
Making a hive out of your crow now means going out and getting more crows.
>>
>>33474426
Since it will be asked, can humans be familiars, willingly or not? What would it do to their minds?
>>
>>33474310
No, only for later crows. Since we still have only one, best to do the best solitary familiar option.

Not that powergaming is that important since there's no goal here.
>>
>>33474491
Yes, why not. There's a level of enforced obedience involved with every familiar bond which makes them more willing to follow and obey you though if you want to find exactly what it does you'll have to try it yourself.

>>
>>33474824
Switching to a different bond (or eliminating it altogether) is something you can do but the familiar loses all abilities it got from the previous bond. Notice that as you learn more stuff you can enchant familiars to be better at something or modify aspects of the bond.

[X] Chatting.

Cecil fills a kettle with water and puts it on the electric stove.

“Planning to take a shower tonight?” You ask her.

She shakes her head with an “Umhn” that translates to ‘no’.

“I see. I’ll probably take one later.” You let your eyes wander around the room before settling to the cabinet full of toys, figurines, VHS and DVDs. You actually recognize most of them as something she got as a kid, though they do look significantly better than they should.
Well, that’s something you could talk about.

“I think I recognize some of those. Are they the same ones you always had?”

She takes coffee pot and some filters from the cupboard. ”Umh.” She nods.

“How’s life treating you? Are you happy?” You ask a more serious question.

She thinks for a while before answering. “I’m fine. Better than before.”

“What about the future? Looking forward to anything?”

Cecil freezes and her body stiffens. It takes minutes for the girl to get snapped out of it by the kettle is boiling. She quickly scrambles to it and pours the hot water into a coffee filter. She turns to look at you with a strange expression. “Sure.”

“Are you lonely?”

She turns to you and nods almost immediately. The coffee seems to be ready as she pours it to two cups, leaving yours black and pouring plenty of milk and sugar into her own.

“Any favorite foods you’d like me to try out?”

She takes a moment before giving you an answer. “Anything sweet.”

Finally, she falls asleep and you move to the bathroom with the crow at your side.

> Now, what kind of bond do you want to establish?

[] Servant, a familiar that can act independently and keep an eye on things as you sleep.

[X] Servant.

You begin by using a knife you took from the kitchen to cut your own finger and pouring it on a small plate.
Using this as paint, you begin drawing symbols on the bathroom floor; one larger circle surrounded by runic markings from the book. You then carefully make the crow bleed onto a different plate and draw a smaller circle with it.
You then pour all the blood into a single vessel and use it to connect these circles with three lines.

The process of drawing perfect circles and lines was challenging enough that you were forced to conjure flesh in order to get some mana for assistance. You hope it doesn’t plug the toilet.

Once all the preparations are done, you step into the larger circle as you familiar steps into the smaller one. You crouch to touch the blood and pour mana into it. The blood shines red as fleshy appendages surround you, warping around you two until you feel feedback from the bond, various emotions rushing to you through it; curiosity, confusion, fear, understanding.

The tentacles melt, covering you and the floor in blood.

[X] The Future.

You are walking through a corridor. With every step you change a little, your comfortable jacket grows longer forming a robe, to your hand forms a metal staff with a large blob of flesh with an eyeball looking around in it on the rod’s tip, the book at your hip grows thinker and a small beard begins forming on your chin.

You step out of the tunnel to find yourself on the roof of a high building.

To your right you see a city covered in flesh, abominations running on the streets and soldiers desperately try to shoot them just to have their bullets bounce back. There you sit on a throne of pulsating flesh, looking down on the unfolding events.

To your left you see a sunken city overtaken by plant life. You see yourself walk the streets with an ever-growing crowd following you, the flora being replaced by blood vessels that push the building out of the ground.

Directly in front of you is a long path leading to a spiraling tower of flesh that reaches the clouds.

You turn around and see a field with numerous paths and destinations, each with a slightly different version of yourself surrounded by different scenery. Some are alone, others surrounded by large crowds of various creatures.

You see something approach in the distance, coming closer and closer with every passing second.

Just it comes close enough for you to recognize it, you wake up.

[X] Breakfast

“Morning.” You mumble, still half asleep as you get up from the couch towards the kitchen.

Cecil greets you with a nod and hands you a cup of black coffee which you gluck down with a single swing, burning your tongue.

Now that you’re up, you take some eggs and ham from the fridge and sugar and salt from the kitchen cabinet. You chop the ham into cubes and mix the ingredients in a glass before pour it on the pan.

“How was your night?” You ask as you throw Nevermore a piece of cheap ham. The bird lets out a “Kaw” that translates roughly to ‘no problems’ while the girl mumbles a sound you assume to mean ‘fine’.

After eating the breakfast, a sweet ham omelet, you go to bathroom to change clothes and then head out, saying quick good byes to Cecil.

You ride the moped to the heart of the city, the local university around which the town has formed.

[X] Biology and chemistry

You are a student of biology with some chemistry classes added in, you’ve also been considering going full biochemist at some point during your education.

You drop by the library to pick up the necessary books for today’s lectures, before going to your first class as your own copies are still stuck in your apartment.

---

Six hours later you walk out of the chemistry building.

>Now that you’re done with your formal education for the day, what do you want to do?

[] Go to Cecil’s apartment.
[] Time for some (magical) self-studying.
[] Go to the woods to practice your spells.
[] Drop by the library to pick up some books on something. (What?)
[] Rent a movie before heading to Cecil.

[X] You want your stuff.

You take your phone and pick the police station’s number from your call history. You have to wait in a line for a while before somebody picks up and you get to explain your business.
The cheerful woman on the other side of the line assures you that you can go fetch whatever you need from the apartment as soon as an officer comes to escort you.

You ride to your apartment, where an older male officer is actually waiting for you.
As soon as you enter the room, you notice that they have cleaned it up quite a bit, gathering the remains of your microwave from the floor and taking the broken window off.
You grab your laptop, which seems like it has been tampered with though your unnecessary amount of illegally downloaded movies and videogames remain untouched, as well as some more clothes and textbooks. Your laptop’s charger, along with most electronics, is fucked though, meaning you have five to six hours of battery-life left before you’ll need to figure something out.

Once you’re done with that you head to Cecil’s apartment where you hear a commotion on the building’s hallway. As you approach the situation, you see an angry woman banging on Cecil’s door yelling. “Cecilia! Open this door right now!”

>What do you do?

[X] Through the window.

You slowly back away from the woman and exit the building. Fortunately Cecil’s room is in the first floor, which means you can just climb in the through the window, which is exactly what you’re going to do.

You throw the stuff you picked up from your apartment - you do wrap the laptop in your clothes before throwing it – then climb in yourself.

As soon as you enter the room you notice two things: the door has been locked with the chain lock and Cecil is sitting in the far corner hugging her knees.

“What’s going on?” You ask her.

She raises her head to look at you as the woman keeps yelling. “Cecilia! We let you move on your own because you promised to show up to the sessions every Monday. Now stop being silly and come out.”

“Help…” The girl in front of you mumbles.

Cecil shakes, her lips move as she is desperately looking for the right words. “Th-they put us in small rooms with these circles on the floor, a-and then everything goes green and then we…” She gulps.

“…Then we kill people.”

You notice the banging as stopped as your senses grow sharper. It takes you a moment to realize exactly what it means: somebody is casting nearby.

[X]Run! 60=failure.

“We’re getting out of here.” You say as you get up from the floor and start preparing a Calling circle on the floor in the middle of the room.

Cecil just stares at you confused until you finish with the circle and throw some pants her way before moving to take your inheritance with you.

A moment too late you realize that another wave of mana washes over you, leaving you with enough time to scream instructions to the girl. “Out of the window, now!”

The door flies off its hinges with great force, knocking you over with the crate on your back. You see the woman enter the room with a short metal rod in her hand as she loads a series of cylinders into it.

The Calling circle triggers and tentacles lash out at her. You notice Cecil jumping out of the window as the surprised woman pulls out a knife and cuts a tentacle that had gotten her right hand.

[X] Bolt and run. 71+10=minimal success.

“Follow her!” You bark a command to your familiar as you begin casting bolt at the woman while she is preoccupied with your Called tentacles. Realizing your plan just in time, she waves the metal wand sending out another push of force that causes your bolt to scatter before reaching its target.
This gives you enough time to get back on your feet and grab the bag you brought earlier by the window.

You leap out of the window, rushing towards your familiar’s presence. The further away from the room you get, the less mana you feel around.

You finally reach panting Cecil and the crow few blocks away from the apartment. There doesn’t seem to be any mana nearby, meaning that you probably got away or at the very least are not near anyone actively using magic.

>What now?

[] Call your father and secure a place to sleep for the two of you.
[] Go hide in the woods; you’re pretty sure you can get a tent or something somewhere.
[] Stay in town, you’ve got work later this evening.
[] Say something to Cecil. (What?)

You put a hand on Cecil’s shoulder, making her look at you. “It’ll be okay. I’ll call dad and we can figure something out.
