After many weeks of travelling, through the guidance of the Horned Rat, a ragged band of Skaven arrives at their promised land. A valley surrounded by mountains to the north and to the east and through which a great river flows, wide and deep. Around the river, a plethora of different kinds of bushes spring up and trees grow tall, reaching for the heaven. Within this forest dwell many animals, including deer and foxes.
Since the fire which burned their settlement down to ashes, these 50 Skaven have journeyed through icy mountains and arid deserts and at times their faith and loyalty have waivered. However, the Plague Mage, leader of the clan, has led them through those harsh times and now, finally, they are ready to settle in these lush lands.

As chief of the clan, what will be your first decision?
>The stomachs of my people growl (gather food).
>We will not withstand the cold of the night (gather the necessary materials and build shelter).
>Without knowledge of our surroundings, we may be in great danger (scout the area).
>Something else must be done (specify).

>Inventory (not a turn)

You were not able to bring much more than the clothes you were wearing in the hurry of leaving your previous home. Upon arrival, you decide to make an inventory of all the items your clan brought along.
You, the Plague Mage, have brought your staff and a few books on the subject of magic, which you may study if you wish.
Five of the Skaven are trained warriors and they managed to bring iron swords and leather armor, one for each of them.
Three of the Skaven who were previously carpenters brought some of their tools, including hammers, some nails and other items which will aid you in building shelter.
The rest of the Skaven were peasants and they did not bring anything relevant. Or at least nothing they brought made it this far.

>Have a map. You’re the purple dot by the river.
>>
>>33490031
>>We will not withstand the cold of the night (gather the necessary materials and build shelter).
>>
>We will not withstand the cold of the night (gather the necessary materials and build shelter).
Although the weather is mild in this place, you have learned from your journey that, at night, temperatures can drop drastically. Your people would not endure such conditions, which is why you commanded five of the Skaven to gather whatever materials they can and proceed to build shelter.

After some hours in the forest, the party returns with several deer skins which they collected from carcasses and propose that tents are built. Everyone works hard for the rest of the day and by nightfall there are enough tents for everyone. They’re not particularly warm and they will leak should it rain, but it’s better than nothing and everyone knows it.

Everyone’s getting incredibly hungry. It’s becoming unbearable.

What will you do next?
>I must not allow my people to starve (gather food).
>These tents are not enough. We must build stronger shelter (build basic wood huts).
>How can I sleep when I don’t know what lurks around me (scout surroundings)?
>Something else must be done (specify).
>>
Gather food
>>
>>33490243
Go and gather food. Now that we have protection from the outside completed.
>>
>>33490243
>>I must not allow my people to starve (gather food).
>>
>I must not allow my people to starve (gather food).

Your people grow restless by the day. A hungry Skaven is an angry Skaven, and you don’t want 49 Skaven angry at you, so you summon 10 Skaven to your presence and give them a new task. They are to search the forest for food, be it fruit, vegetables, carcasses or anything edible at all. They gladly delve into the forest and return later that day bearing baskets laden with apples, pears and mushrooms. Your people rejoice in this sight but the gatherers don’t seem happy at all.
You notice that only 8 of the Skaven you sent have return. Upon questioning them, they tell you that a fierce she-bear attacked them and, with a single blow for each, killed two of them. The news inevitably spread and everyone panics.

“A giant bear?” they shout “What if it attacks in the night? What good are our tents?”
The clan expects you to deal with this problem immediately. However, it’s up to you to make the call.

>I cannot allow this bear to haunt my people (send a party to hunt the beast).
>I will not send my warriors to die (do not attack for now).
>>
I would hunt it, but do we have any ranged equipment? Or we can send the mage, but that might taint the meat, if we were thinking of using it.

>Magic (not a turn)

As a plague mage, you have delved into the dark arts, you have stared into the abyss, but you are nevertheless a novice. As of now you can only cast one offensive spell, which you have taken to calling Ray of Feebleness. You may aim it at a single target, which will be physically weakened, the extent of this effect depending on the foe’s own strength.
In addition to this, you can also cast a spell which heals your allies of disease or poisoning, although some forms of these ailments may be too powerful for you to eradicate.
You may study your books and meditate, in hopes of furthering your mastery of plague magic.

>Here’s a map with the tents and also a paw where the bear attacked.

"Why should we hunt the bear when we can easily ambush it. Set up a decoy camp filled with our warriors and have them make a bunch of noise to lure the bear over their while our civilians hide in our main camp. Then we ambush the bear when it attacks and kill it that way."
>>
>>33490655
The only weapons we have are iron swords, one for each warrior. You may research bows, which will take a while, or slings, which will be slightly faster. But every turn you spend researching it, you risk being attacked again.

Your people demand it and you shall give it to them.
In the night, a party consisted of five warriors and you delves into the darkness of the forest. Hidden amongst the bushes and finding cover behind trees, you slowly advance towards the place where the bear was last seen. Eventually, you find it.
Lying next to a tree is the mighty she-bear and in its embrace is a young cub, which playfully licks its mother’s fur. The beast has its head turned the other way, so you do not know whether it is asleep or awake.

How will you proceed?

You command the warriors to stealthily approach the bear, while you yourself stay back, hiding amongst the bushes. As the Skaven get closer to the beast, it turns its head towards them. Thankfully, it’s asleep, your men sigh in relief. Each step they take is less and less confident as fear takes over their body. Nervously they draw their swords and, when they’re close enough, mercilessly stab it into the bear’s back.
The beast lets out a fearsome roar of agony, which petrifies the warriors, and with great effort it tries to stand. Promptly, you cast your Ray of Feebleness on it, which sends the she-bear back to the ground. However, it has not given up. The creature swings its monstrous arm against the skull of one of the warriors and the sound of bone turning into dust leaves no doubt: he’s dead. The remaining warriors strike one more blow in the beast’s back and, finally, life leaves its body, which becomes a carcass.
The cub is absolutely terrified and attempts to hide itself under its mother’s arm. You order your men to bring it back to the camp, along with the mother’s carcass. The bear’s meat provides for a great feast and the clan’s confidence in you is renewed, despite the warrior’s death. The Skaven are extremely happy that the bear has been dealt with, and so quickly!
A rope (which is tied to a tree) has been tied around the cub’s neck. As it grows, this will not be enough anymore.

What will you do now?
>My clan needs proper military training (begin training soldiers, specify how many).

While some Skaven desperately try to calm the furious cub, you summon 10 others and send them scouting, 5 to the South and 5 to the North.
To the north, there is a cave from which the river flows and a narrow passage. The wind there is extremely strong, the scouts have even called it “violent”.
To the south, the tall, green trees suddenly become dark, dead and twisted and in the middle of this perverted forest stands some kind of monument, abandoned and overcome by vegetation. The scouts did not dare scout further.

With this information, what will you do next?
>We need proper soldiers at once. (begin training warriors, specify how many)
>There’s still building to be done (build something, specify what)

Wood and stone is better than nothing.

>There’s still building to be done

You wander through the camp and see your clan clumsily entering their tents and struggling to get used to this new life. Accustomed to living beneath the earth, the tents could never truly feel like home. The only solution is to go underground.
You call 10 Skaven and tell them to begin digging underground huts. They seem extremely excited about this, “to truly have a home” they say. This project will be finished in 3 turns and, more than shelter from the elements, it will protect you from “wandering eyes”, as one of the Skaven mentioned.

As your population grows, more food is required and, consequently, you have assigned more Skaven to gather food. The more experienced gatherers warn you that excessive gathering may actually reduce the amount of food gathered, if the plants aren’t given enough time to grow and to leave seeds. In the long-term, this may be very harmful to our clan.

With this information, what will you do next?
>We cannot be defenseless. (begin training warriors, specify how many)

Since you have arrived in this land, you have devoted quite a lot of time to studying your books. The ancient letters are hard to decipher, but through great effort you have managed to learn from them. You can now cast a cloud which has a slightly weaker effect than Ray of Feebleness, but on various enemies. In addition to that, the standard Ray of Feebleness has become more powerful.

As you leave your tent, you see the gatherers arriving from the forest. Their baskets are not nearly as full as the first time you witnessed this scene. You choose to heed the old gatherers’ advice and find a new source of food. The first thing that comes to your mind is the river. It’s teeming with all kinds of fish and it’s not too deep near the bank.
Of course, to fish you’d need spears, so you get 10 Skaven to begin crafting these tools, which may also be used as thrown weapons. Next turn they’ll be knees-deep in the river stabbing at the water (and hopefully hitting something).

The bear cub (still furious) is getting bigger by the day and the rope is looking weaker. Some Skaven worry that it may escape.

Train warriors. Say, half our idle.

We need to do something about the bear. If it won't be tamed, I see 3 options: (1) kill it, (2) make a pen of some kind (probably won't work very well), or (3) maim it somehow so that it can be directed in combat (probably the worst option, morally, but I kinda want to see what happens)

The underground huts are finished! Now the clan can truly feel at home! Should it rain torrentially or should the river flood, everyone will probably drown – but who cares? It’s huts! Underground! The builders are glad they’re finally done with this exhausting task, but they won’t be getting any rest soon.
Nathaniel is all grown up now and we’re nowhere near taming it. A bear needs a proper bear pit, with enough space to roam around and pile up prisoners’ corpses. You get your building crew on it and you expect next turn it’ll be done.
Meanwhile, the crafters are done crafting spears. Now they’re fishermen! The fish is a much appreciated addition to the clan’s diet and population will grow even faster now!

We need to build some kind of irrigation system to change the flow of the water and perhaps create a filtration system to provide water to our people.

Just dig drains at the tunnel entrances, if our tunnels are really close to the ground the dig them in the tunnels proper too. And about overflowing, if we just make the drains deep enough then they won't and we get fresh water too even if there's a river right there.

Forgot to say, "or pic related".

Train warriors (30 idles)
>>
>Seal tunnels from outside world at allt imes we don't need to go to the surface
>Become true skaven and build massive underground hive
>Find ways to exploit ground-water
>Raise animals fed on fungus deep in the caves to be a sustainable food source along with the fungus and possibly some sub-terrestrial creatures we might find
>Become masters of disguising the entrances to our underground utopia, so that if we go to war we can easily appear anywhere we want without having to travel across the surface
>If we make allies, use these tunnels to become a trade superpower
>All hail the horned rat
>>
>>33493735
This is reasonable. Just don't want to drown
>>
>>33493735
We should also make wells where the tunnels lead. Don't want good water to go to waste.
>>
>>33493735
Stock the drains with fish from the river, create an underground lake, create an emergency food source and a nice resort for skaven families to visit

Anon here makes some pretty good points, but I don't want us to become exclusively underground
>>
>>33493581
We still only have 4 soldiers...
If we were to be attacked, we would have
very limited means of defending ourselves.

>>33493869
no.
>>
>>33493869
Don't know if allies will come easy though, keeping the Skaven traits in mind
>>
>>33493971
Skaven are naturally subterranian creatuers, but yes, we should at least maintain a presence on the surface.

I'd suggest that we maybe provide basic training to the rest of the clan then. Sort of like when you get the peasants to join in on fights in Age of Empire.

Alternatively we could introduce a caste system.
>>
>>33493869
I like this. Plant saplings to even have an underground forest.

Well the way I counted it people do want more soldiers, and digging drains aren't a very time-consuming project, there's enough rats to do that and still have some left over to train.

Hey, I have to leave now, we've been playing for like 5 hours. I had a great time and you seem to have a lot of great ideas for our great skaven civilization!

I'll start a thread tomorrow at the same time to continue our clan's story. Make sure you stop by. Use the Catalog to find the thread (some people actually don't know about this).

I'll see you tomorrow!

Maybe get the carpenters building dummies and prop weapons to begin training.
All children should be provided with basic combat training. The best of them become warriors.
