Lying in a comfortable armchair in your father’s living room you stare at the ceiling fan while grasping your grimoire tightly.

You are the heir of Aaflyn bloodline, a novice mage with affinity of flesh and the last few days of your life have been quite hectic.

The day before yesterday you found a box full of strange items along with a letter from a grandfather you never knew telling you about your heritage which led to the destruction of your apartment’s roof and may have landed you on the police’s watch list.
You found shelter at your old friend’s, Cecil’s, place even though you hadn’t seen in years, which may have something to do with the fact that somebody capable of magic has been using her to kill people.

Just a couple of hours ago a woman broke into her apartment by blowing the door off with what you assume to be some kind of magic wand though you managed to hold her off for long enough for the two of you to escape.

You need a plan.

>What do you do?

[] Read the grimoire, try to figure out what kind of magic the assailant used.
[] You need to know what you’re up against, see if Cecil can tell you anything.
[] Your dad has been staring at you for a while now, maybe yo shoul say something to him... (What?)
[] You can worry about this later, go to work like nothing happened.

“Did you know mom’s father was a mage?” You ask your father.

“Yes, Maria told me about it. Is this current mess you’re in his fault somehow?” Even after all these years your mother was still a bit unpleasant subject for him.

“Something like that. Did she tell you anything about it?” The girl on your lap shifts slightly, pulling her legs up and curling into a ball.

“No, not really. She said she didn’t want to have anything to do with it anymore.” His eyes turn to Cecil for a moment, before returning to you. “Can you tell me exactly what happened?”

You hesitate for a moment, unsure of how much you should tell him before settling for a vague yet informative explanation. “I found out I can use magic, ended up destroying the apartment and it seems I pissed off some cult in the process.”

He takes a deep breath. “Alright, now what are you going to do about it?”

“I figured we’d stay here for the night as I do some magic and probably leave early tomorrow.” You keep petting the girl who seems to have fallen asleep.

Your father nods. “You can sleep in your old room; I’ll prepare the guest room for Cecilia. You know where we keep medicine in case you need any.”

He gets up and leaves the room, leaving you alone with sleeping Cecil.

You pick her up and set her down on a couch before setting your hands against her rather small chest without any evil intentions at all. You close your eyes and focus, trying your best to check her for any unpleasant surprises. You find some mana from her, though you estimate it to be merely leftovers from something cast on her recently.
You retract your hands as you convince yourself that you have nothing to feel guilty about.

[X] To the book.

You sit down on the armchair again and grab the grimoire which opens on its own.

It takes you five hours and seven cups of coffee but you do manage to find something interesting.

The first thing to note is that not just anyone is capable of using magic like you.
Every generation only a single child is born into each of the arcane bloodlines with the potential to control mana and become a full fletched mage while many others are trained in alchemy or rune casting, both of which can be used by anyone with appropriate equipment.

Rune casting uses staves or wands and mana-imbued cylinders with runes carved on them to cast. While this allows a non-mage to cast spells, it also requires them to change the rune cylinders after each spell, meaning the number of spells before getting the cylinders refilled by a mage is limited.

Alchemy on the other hand is very similar to cooking or chemistry, needing merely the ingredients, which can be almost anything from specific material to a whole creature, and a mana-imbued circle with to use.

>cont.
>>
>>33497875
The second thing you gather is a list of possible spells one may use to control people:

>Suggestion, 2nd circle: Makes the target more likely to act in a certain way.
>Submission, 3rd circle: Higher and more easily noticeable form of ‘suggestion’ that forces target to do something.
>Puppet, 4th circle: Puts the target under casters control and allows them to move them like a puppet.
>Highjack, 5th circle: Allows caster to directly move the target’s body, much like a possessed familiar.

The third thing is making yourself harder to detect.
This seems to be quite easy, as mana is released only when casting one could hide their magical talents from others simply by refraining from its use.
The problem is one of the scrying spells, listed under curses:

Locate, 3rd circle: Gives caster information about the origin of an object in their possession.

This spell, when used with something like a hair, could be used to track people.
Reading a bit more about the theory behind the spell, high amounts of mana in the area near the target may throw it off though it would make it easy for a mage to pin down the general area.

[X] Barriers.

You have one last thing you want to do before calling it a night.

You exit the house and walk around it six times, three times clockwise and three times counterclockwise, starting clockwise, and then alternating between the directions while releasing your mana in the form of a thin fleshy line.
Next you draw three lines between the house and the circle in spiraling fashion before putting small circles of your mana between these lines and focusing on the woman you saw earlier.
You go through the extra trouble of pouring unnecessary amount of mana into it upon activation which results to stronger yet more obvious spell which makes it serve the purpose of protecting against scrying better.

With that done, you throw your familiar, which has been sitting in a tree in the yard a piece of conjured flesh , to which it responds with a “Kaw” of ‘good night’.

The very last thing you do for the night is checking on Cecil, who seems to be sleeping just fine for now.

When you wake up after six hours of sleep you immediately to the kitchen where you see Cecil as well as your father and little sister who must have come home yesterday as you were busy with the book are already up. As soon as you enter the room, Cecil hands you a steaming cup of fresh coffee, your father gives you a nod from behind his newspaper and your little sister greets you with a mischievous grin.
“Morning, dear brother. Too busy reading to greet your family yesterday?”

You ignore her, not awake enough to deal with this shit.

After cooking some breakfast for everybody, you make a list of the stuff you managed to save:
>A Laptop without charger, roughly 6 hours of battery life left.
>Two t-shirts.
>A hoodie.

>Two pairs of cargo pants. (one clean and one currently worn by Cecil)

“Okay. Calm down, there’s nothing to worry about. Now, where exactly is this ‘facility’?” You try to calm her as you ask the next question.

Her eyes move to the door. “North. At the outskirts.”

You nod, satisfied. “Good, good. Now, how many of them were there?”

[X] Check out my rod.

You pick the metal rod up from the floor and take a closer look at it. It’s roughly two meters long and hollow, with a hole around third of the way from one end.
You recognize it as a rune casting staff based on a description you read in the book last night.
New runes are loaded through the hole in the middle while the empty ones fall off from the bottom.

You put the staff back down while opening the book to do some reading on constructs.

Constructs are created through Alchemy and Enchantments to serve specific purposes.
Examples of such would be enchanting an eyeball to give show image on a reflective surface, much like a camera, or making statues that lift things.
Some more complicated constructs can be bound with a familiar bond instead of enchantment or even added directly on a subject body.

There are blueprints of various types of creatures and tools but you aren’t sure if you have the fine control, hand-to-eye coordination and the materials to pull most of them.

We really need to figure out where we're going to go. All of this prep is well and good, but this house can't stay our retreat point, and it would be putting dad/sis in danger.
Sanctuary research when?
>>
>>33503430
We already researched Sanctuaries; we even have the spell for it.

Anyways, we should look into making a sanctuary somewhere remote/safe before more wizards decide to kill our family.

can we do research about wards? like something to alert us to intruders or something

On second thought, let's go ahead and make a sanctuary. See if your dad would be okay with making the house your sanctuary.

Looking into possible locations for a sanctuary seems to be the general consensus.

[X] What to call home?

You feel like it’s about time you made yourself a Sanctuary.

The woods where you met your familiar would be one option, being out of the way and well hidden with minimal chances of some other mage accidentally stumbling upon it, though it lacks any form of settlement which means you’d have to build something there yourself, either out of your conjured flesh, some actual building materials or a cave of some sort.
You’d also have to arrange things like electricity and clean water, as it’s quite a distance away from civilization.

Another option would be an abandoned building; there certainly isn’t a lack of those in the outskirts of the city though they are a pretty obvious place to settle in.
Still, you could easily steal electricity and water from somewhere.

Third option to consider is Cecil’s apartment. You wouldn’t have to worry about electricity and water as it’s already connected to the grid, though it’s pretty small for your needs and expanding would require you to obtain more rooms from the building, which takes money that you don’t have.

The final option would be making it here, tough that would expose your family to any intruders and you aren’t sure how your father would like that, not to mention it’d be hardest to defend right now.

Scouting out an abandoned building sounds like the best idea to me, though given the description of 'completely separate' in the pastebin what all is entailed?
It should be a place we can easily get to and from, with all the amenities of home.
>>
>>33504072
>Woods
I don't want to deal with this inter-mage bullshit just yet, lets build us a nice little place out in the boonies and become a badass first
>>
>>33504072
What about our own apartment? We could patch the hole in the roof with flesh.

Failing that, the woods would probably be our best bet when it comes to how easily other mage can find us.
>>
>>33504072
if our flesh is safe to eat then i vote for woods
>>
>>33504264
How would we deal with the whole no running water and electricity thing?

I'm all up for making a batcave, but it should be practical.
>>
>>33504323
Honestly, it;s no big deal, considering we'll still be going to school regularly and can use their facilities, plus we can always shack up at our dad's house if we need to for a bit now that he's in the know

We could try to get ahold of solar panels for electricity and a small water pump. We should look in the grimoire for spells that we can use to do things magically in lieu of technology, like a spell that allows us to create a magical source of water, like using Runes of Water and powering it with Mana.
As for an Internet connection, use a Verizon MiFi unit, or something similar. It won't be as fast as a cable connection, but it's portable.
>>
>>33504072
Abandoned building/woods seems best.

If we can build ourselves a little shack in the woods and have access to a clean river, it would be great.

Otherwise, abandoned building. We need a place to charge our laptop.
>>
>>33504553
>We need a place to charge our laptop.
Electricity Rune, help from a friend in the electrical engineering program at school to create a battery/transformer.
Or a solar charge from an outdoors/camping equipment website.

[X] Forest gump.

You decide that the woods seem like the best place for a Sanctuary right now.

As you pack your stuff back in the box you notice that Cecil has gotten up from the bed and has been looking at you for some time now.
She seems like her usual self again as she follows you out of the room.

You say goodbyes to your dad and sister before heading to the bus stop, Cecil at your heels.

As you climb in the bus you realize that you missed work yesterday and classes today. Well, considering all that has happened you don’t really mind it too much.

Your trip back to the city is uneventful and son you arrive back to Cecil’s apartment where your moped awaits, exactly where you left it before your fast escape.

You ride it to the woods where you begin looking for a fitting location. You find one without too much trouble, right by a small river and a cliff you could build something into.

> Is this location fine?

[] Yes, start establishing the Sanctuary.
[] Yes, but do something before starting.
[] No, look for another location.
[] (Write-in)
>>
>>33505155
Start establishing the sanctuary!
>>
>>33505155
Looks like a wonderful place, but let's ask Cecils opinion of this plan in general, hiding out together and all. We should pick up a tent and enough supplies to last us the creation of the sanctuary and then some as well, so as to avoid interruptions.

Sucks about work and class, maybe we should call in with a sickness while we're getting supplies?
Is she following us like a lost puppy?
Maybe we should explain the familiar bit to Cecil, and offer it.
>>
>>33505155
Get crowbro to take watch while we set up the sanctuary
>>
>>33505155
>[x] Yes, but do something before starting.
Have Edgar look around and keep watch. Does this place get good sunlight?
What about a cellular signal?
>>
>>33505155
>[] Yes, but do something before starting.
have nevermore scout and looks for animals for potential familiars, get Cecil all set up since this will take a while
>>
>>33505343
The current location is south of the city, around fifteen minute ride away from the outskirts and another fifteen minutes into the woods.
The river is on southern side while the cliff which is about five meters high, though it does become smaller to east where it eventually turns into a slope, is to north.
The area between them is clear in the spot where you're right now, though there are trees to west and east.
Cellphone signal is fine.
>>
>>33505594
>Cellphone signal is fine.
Then we can still connect to the Internet with our cellphone, and set our phone as a wifi hotspot for our laptop. Now we just need solar chargers or use an Electricity Rune.
>>
Scouting the area before starting to set things up seems to be the general consensus.

[X] Bleeding.

You tell your familiar to check the surrounding area for wild animals as you begin the preparations.

You pull out your pocket knife and grab a disinfected bucket you prepared just for this. This is going to hurt.

You cut the palm of your left hand open and let the blood flow into the bucket as Cecil watches you in horror. Flesh spouts from the fingertips of your right had as you demand more mana into your body to avoid falling unconscious.
You are not sure how long it takes but finally the bucket is filled with the red fluids. Your familiar affirms the area safe and you begin your work with some help from Cecil. She carries the bucket as your mana-enhanced mind calculates the exact location for each line drawn to make sure the distance between them is the same.
You set the entrance between two trees close enough together to hide the entrance while allowing you to haul larger items into the barrier.

Once you finish the initial setup the sun is already setting. Once the ritual begins you won’t be able to leave the area for two days.

>Is there anything you wish to do before you begin?

Call in to work, tell them we've come down with something fierce, like temperature of 102 degrees fierce (104 is fatal), and we won't be able to come in.
Call our school, give them the same story.
That should keep the police off our back.
Call dad, ask him to order an outdoor solar charger/lamp for us from Amazon, we'll pay him back when we pick it up. Having him order it will make it harder for the police to trace.
>>
>>33506223
Reassure Cecil and double check the plan with her.
Make the calls to be sure that we won't be searched for or put on a missing persons list.
Hug Cecil
Get supplies and tent.

[X] Home is where the flesh is.

You do a last minute check on your supplies. You’ve got water and calorie bars but you begin to doubt that they’ll suffice for the two of you.
After walking back to the road you ride to a convenience store where you pick up some dried or pre-cooked food and bottled water, along with a tarp to use as a shelter.

You call both school and work, telling them you’re sick. Your professors tell you they’ll send you assignments to do and notes from the lectures you’re missing while your boss, while unhappy about your missed work, wishes you to get well soon. You also call your dad to order a solar charger from the internet.

With that out of the way you grab a couple of long branches and carefully set the tarp up by the cliff so that it doesn’t interfere with the circles.

“It’ll be alright. Once I get this Sanctuary up and running you won’t have to worry about anything anymore.” You whisper into Cecil’s ear as you hug her.

Finished with the preparations, you sit within a circle exactly in the middle of your chosen area. You set your fingers on smaller circles with lines leading into the complicated network of your mana-infused blood.

>cont.
>>
>>33507454

You take a deep breath and begin pouring mana into the spell. You won’t be able to move from this spot anytime soon…

Two hours into the ritual and you haven’t felt better in your life. The non-stop flood of mana is making you ecstatic as you blabber random things to Cecil to occupy your time….

Twelve hours into the ritual, Cecil is feeding you some dried meat as you play word games with her…

Twenty-four hours into the ritual, your mana-enhanced senses are way too sharp and even the sound of wind rusting the trees makes your head feel like it’s slitting. Your familiar is doing its best to keep any animals out of your earshot while Cecil is sitting under the tarp and looking at you in silence as you try to reassure her…

Thirty-six hours into the ritual, you are no longer coherent, your inability to sleep is putting you in the edge, eating and drinking has become impossible and your own words hurt your ears as you try to form something resembling sentences to reassure Cecil…

Forty-eight hours into the ritual, you feel completely drained; your fingers leave their positions as you finish the circle, falling on Cecil’s lap.

The trees are pink, flesh having replaced the twigs and leaves as blood vessels run on their bark; the undergrowth now consists of short tentacles that wave in the non-existing wind and the red sky tints the water in its color. Fleshy walls surround your little world, with a door where you remember leaving the exit.
You feel aware of everything going on within the Sanctuary and find it homely and calming despite its rather grotesque appearance.

Finally, you fall asleep for the first time in two days…

I'll stick around for any questions, comments and whatnot.

Would appreciate it if somebody archived the thread for me.

How much control over this flesh will we get?
Will we be able to alter the type of flesh, or will it always be human and have our DNA?
And because it leaves physical stuff behind, this is the easiest magic type to acquire samples for scrying and tracking, isn't it?

And we have made our womb sanctuary. I wonder if it has a heartbeat, and what Cecil thinks of spending all her time there.

Looking forward to learning how to spawn constructs from the walls and trees.
Will the pastebin be updated with both spells, and important factoids like how mages are a one per line thing, we're flesh, we've got (maybe) plant chasing Cecil, and Fire in town?
>>
>>33507523
this is the best quest I have ever had the pleasure of participating in.

thank you.
>>

So far this quest has been rather enjoyable thank you for taking the time to run it.
>>
I am curious as to what type of flesh it is like >>33507545 says, is it human with our DNA or is it just flesh with no specific resemblance to any animal, and is it safe to eat?
>>
>>33507611
Forensics says it's human; the real question is if it has our DNA and if it can be used to track us.
To be honest, we've given ourselves huge handicaps with this selected school.
>>
>>33507626
True, but I think it's also the school that has the easiest time 'making' things, especially sustainable minions if our dreams are anything to go by.
>>
>>33507545
>>33507611
You can learn to basically be able to move and shape the sanctury with your will, make it fight for you, ect. The only things you can't move are center and entrance.
As for your affinity, it remains genetically yours unless you go through the trouble of alchemically fusing it with something else.
Right now it's just this mushy substance with blood flowing through it so i guess you could eat it.
Also, look at the bright side, at least flesh isn't poisonous or doesn't destroy whatever it comes in contact with.

>>33507546
I'll update the pastebin at the very least before the next thread.

>>33507547
>>33507566
Glad at hear it.
>>
>>33507757
But does it have our DNA?
>>
>>33507757
Is Cecil going to go insane in the fleshy surroundings?
>>
>>33507757
well shit so leaving any behind gives them a way to track us
but at least if we need to we can eat it
>>
>>33507769
>As for your affinity, it remains genetically yours unless you go through the trouble of alchemically fusing it with something else.

>>33507789
I know I'd be pretty creeped out by a living flesh house.

How big is the house currently?

And I bet Cecil isn't feeling to great about us after hearing mad ranting for two days.
>>
>>33507802
I don't think we have a house yet.
>>
>>33507830
Fair enough. We've got walls and a door, though. It's more house-y than most things innawoods.
>>
>>33507802
The current size of your sanctuary is roughly a hundred meters to every direction, though a good chunk of it to the south is taken up by the river.
>>
>>33507879
Having the river run through our sanctuary is just fine by me. I feel like we can generate some power by harnessing it.
>>
Man, this sanctuary is pretty metal.
>>
What does the sanctuary look like from the outside? Is some hiker going to stumble onto a huge blob of flesh in the middle of the woods, or is it disguised at all?
>>
>>33508273
It's basically unnoticeable from the outside and that part of the woods now gives off an 'you don't want to be here' feeling for anyone who gets too close.
The only part that can be seen is the door, which is hidden among branches.
Of course, another mage could sense it if they get close enough.
>>
>>33508329
if we inject cecil with our blood or make her our familiar, will she be able to use magic?
if she can will her affinity automatically be the same as ours?
>>
>>33508753
The thing that lets you cast magic is that your body produces mana which you can control along with having the will to control it.
The reason why 'Possession' allows you to use magic through a familiar is because it pumps mana to the familiar through the link. The fact that you take complete control of their body is more or less a side effect of that.
The reason why rune casting is possible by non-mages is because the runes are imbued with mana and they shape it already automatically, which means the caster just has to release the pre-made spell.

The simple answer to the first question is no, it'd take a lot more than blood to make that happen.
Your affinity is sort of like the type of your mana, even if it's not visible it's still there.
