"No one really knows where demons come from. Only a few types of demons are smart or learned enough to know of their own origins, but as they're also smart enough to find and exploit loopholes in their summoning contracts, efforts to interview them have proven singularly unsuccessful (i.e. end in fire, death, and an infestation of demons. On the plus side, many enterprising heroes and saviors of the world have launched their careers from the aftermath of these attempts).

"As such, we can only attempt to piece together working theories from what little we know.

"Certainly, there's the bog-standard 'evil deity' theory, but that falls flat; deities are much easier to 'interview,' and every known god or goddess has vehemently denied having a hand in the creation of demons (and haven't given us much more information than that). There's no saying whether they're telling the truth, but it's entirely possible; demons are thought to be from another dimension and/or universe entirely. Different gods for different folk, as they say.

"Of course, there aren't many other working theories, as what little we know about demons is primarily focused on killing them as quickly and efficiently as possible. Some say that demons were all spawned from a single monstrous progenitor, who waits to be released from his or her prison; others theorize that demons were once former inhabitants of our world, and were cut out of it for some unknown crime. Others yet say that demons were those unfortunate or unskilled enough to become a part of our world's divine pantheons, and sacrificed their immortality for horrific powers... and so on, and so forth."

The scaratones and dwarves thought he was stuck in a coma, having overdrawn his resources to suplex a literally metaphorical literary device that turned reality on its head. The ogres thought he was simply sleeping it off. The elves simply didn't know what to think anymore, so they tried not to. As it turns out, almost everyone in Ogir Place was wrong about the status of their leader.

Boss Bawss Fistboss is dreaming.

Stuck in that strange realm between consciousness and unconsciousness, the larger ogre watches as time flies by with every sign of interest, and absolutely no worry for his corporeal body as it lies down there in the mortal realm.

He nods in approval as the ogres repair Ogir Place, putting it back together even better than it was before.
He sees Gubbins pop off into his little temporal jaunt, and manages to catch the geomancer coming back with an entire group of kobolds in tow.
He scratches his cheek in puzzlement as Celicia flies off the handle after one reality-twisting event too many, and just in time to save Queen Kilkkarak from the remnants of the Formichroma.
He squints as the light shining from the newly-empowered patchwings and skeletons nearly blinds him, and wonders what fried god-phoenix would taste like.

Finally, after a second or a hundred years, Boss Bawss Fistboss stands up, the strange dreamy firmament sagging under his weight, and brushes some of the weird little spangly star bits off of his knees. "A'right, I'm gonna hafta start gettin' back to da boys now. I'm goin' back ta Ogir Place."

The strange in-between world whispers back to him.

>No.

Boss Bawss Fistboss blinks, frowning a little bit. "Why not?"

>You are a larger threat to the stability of our reality than the kobolds or the demons will ever be. We cannot let you leave.

... well, THAT'S not on his list of things to do.

And keeping an eye on those write-ins!

Boss Bawss Fistboss squints blindly into the weird, sparkly dream-stuff. It's hard to get a bead on distances in this sort of place, let alone figure out who's talking to him. He can't even figure out where the voices are coming from.

"Nah, look- I ain't no threat, right? How can I be a threat to reality? I'm just an ogre boss," he rumbles.

There's a contemplative pause.

>... well, he DOES have a point-

There's the sound of a hand smacking someone upside the head.

A second smack soon follows.

>What part of "don't listen to the ogre" is hard to understand? Now shut up before I get the Dreamwardens in here and drag you out by force.
>A-Alright, okay, I get it!

Boss Bawss Fistboss scratches his head. Trying to talk sense into these folks might be kinda hard. Not that "kinda hard" ever means anything to an ogre...

"Wait, wait, wait."

The bickering falls to silence as expectant eyes(?) turn toward Boss Bawss Fistboss. The larger ogre pauses, one hand up as he gathers his thoughts. "What if... now, 'kay, hear me out. What if THIS is da real world, an' out THERE is da dream world?"

There's a baffled pause.

>Don't be silly. This is the real world, and what you have in THERE is the dream world-

"Is dat wot you think?" Boss Bawss Fistboss crosses his barrel arms over his chest. "Can ya prove it?"

The second person communicating begins to whimper.
>Boss, this guy, he's REALLY got a point-

- only to be smacked upside the head again.
>Cease your whining, and keep your head on straight! Are you a mewling pinkskin, or a proud walker of dreams, like your grandfather and his grandfather before him?? Now...

Boss Bawss Fistboss waits patiently as the more experienced "walker of dreams" cracks his knuckles.

>Look, ogre, we have nothing to prove. The burden is on YOU to prove that you are, in fact, in the real world! What have your poor, leaderless ogres been doing while you were stuck in the darkness of the dream world?

"But I'm not stuck in da dream world."

>... what?

Boss Bawss Fistboss feels for a wall in the firmament of the dream world and leans against it casually. "I've been sittin' back an' watchin' my boys run around for a while. See, da elves helped out ol' Queenie back under the Scaratone Hive, an' she even became propa ogre-like for a while there. Then, Gubbins played around with time..."

The larger ogre continues rambling in this vein for quite a while, seemingly unaware of how the silence from the other end of the conversation grows increasingly brittle and worried.

>S-See? What did I tell you, boss?? We've been dragged in! We've ALL been dragged into the dream world! An illusory grue's done us in, boss, just like poor ol' Kragath was-
>You! Shut up! We will perform the sacred rites and escape this foul illusion! We'll switch places with the ogre, he was disposable anyway.

"Er, you sure you wanna do dat?" Boss Bawss Fistboss hazards, raising his voice to be heard over the sounds of the clanging of metal tools and some sort of bleating animal being dragged into wherever the voices are.

>Of course we do! I'm terribly sorry that it had to come to this, but it has to be done; we are the guardians keeping the world stitched together, and you are the harbinger of reality's unfraying. It's too late to beg for your life, ogre!

"... okay."

The next few minutes are quite busy- on the other side, at least. The large ogre waits patiently as the chanting reaches a fever pitch, and then he feels something tugging at his very essence, taking him away from this strange, nonsensical plane of existence.

>Prepare yourself, my apprentice, and my guards! Our escape to the real world is imminent!

The dream world echoes with a "sproink" sound as about six orcs dressed in ceremonial outfits pop into existence next to Boss Bawss Fistboss.

As the large ogre is pulled out of the dream world, waving cheerfully at the orcs, they have just enough time to scream in utter mortified rage before he disappears.

Boss Bawss Fistboss slowly climbs to his feet, dusting himself off before looking around at a stony room. Glancing outside the window, he sees nothing but dark green trees underneath a super-bright sun. Colorful birds scream at the sky as they wing through the canopy far above his head, equally colorful monkeys scream at each other as they clamber through the trees, and the orcs running around outside scream as they're flee from the growing space-time anomaly opening up at the edge of the town.

Well, the other 2 don't really count except for 'super-charging' the Goddess of Luck's intervention. Which has been, uh, ready for a while, I think? I can't remember if we used it in the last few threads or not.
>>
Just gonna point out that random dumb luck has fucked reality.
It's like if cthlhu arose and was hit in the head with a steamship, causing his home to arise from the sea, into which man delved, discovered nuclear weapons, and wiped each other out in an atomic Great War.

Also, did we just re-tame Ogir Place's wayward ex-heating system?

Yes, we used it either in the last thread or the one before that to merge the entire Scaratone Empire into Ogir Place. Ogrecledian Geometry.

>Stupidly Successful!

Momentarily ignoring the... whatever it is going on outside, Bawss takes a few seconds to glance around. The chamber is nice, wide, and, until just recently, populated by orcs who're supposedly well-versed in walking through dreams; there's an awful lot of sun imagery carved into the walls, all symmetrical and visually pleasing. There are an assortment of incomprehensibly-shaped metal tools on the ground, scattered next to the sad little body of a goat, and some strange circle drawn with fresh blood; in terms of less horribly sacrificial decor, there's a strange statue of a bird with a bobble head.

Boss Bawss Fistboss shrugs, and...

>CHOOSE ONE
[1] ... grabs the tools.
[2] ... grabs the goat corpse.
[3] ... grabs the blood.
[4] ... grabs the walls.
[5] ... grabs the bobblehead doll.
[6] ... grabs nothing, because that'd be looting, an' looting is only for rude 'orrible adventurers who was raised in barns.

(Cont. in 10-15 minutes to allow a choice and to type up the thing-taming post!)

Except i wan't to literally grab nothing. I want to grab it and take it away to Ogir place.

Just in case my first option, of THE FLOOR, isn't allowed, I go with walls. We need to upgrade our building skills, and having an example of what walls should look like might help.

>[X] [TAKE THE NOTHING]
That done, Bawss calmly trundles on down the stairs- all sixty of them, but it doesn't occur to him to wonder why orcs need so many godsdamned stairs in the first place- and exits into a plaza, which is currently in absolute chaos.

So he whips out the one thing he took from the room.

Green-skinned orcs are everywhere, although it's much less noisy than otherwise expected; very few of the civilians are screaming as they flee the anomaly, the rest are single-mindedly going as fast in the other direction as possible. More than a few appear to be taking up arms, joining the smaller stream of taller, more muscular orcs grimly making their way toward the anomaly without comment-

And absolutely none of them notice the big ball of nothingness trundling past them.
(Cont.)
>>
>>33504556
The first kobold skirmisher steps out of the space-time anomaly, drawing a pair of daggers. "Alright- go in fast and hit them before they get those warriors lined up. We'll warp the rest away. Just As Planned!"

Dozens of reedy voices echo that battlecry, only to fade away as a seven-foot tall blue ogre straightens up in front of them, seemingly popping up from out of nowhere. Bawss ignores the kobolds' challenges, the fact that he's surrounded by three-foot tall lizardmen with extremely deadly weapons, and even the orcs coming up behind him. He's only got eyes for one thing, and one thing alone.

"Who's a good boy?"

Everyone present SWEARS they just heard some strange, incomprehensible noise.

"Dey ain't feedin' you right, huh?" Boss Bawss plucks a bit of nothingness from the nothing held in his hand and tosses it to the space-time anomaly. An unfortunate kobold screams as he's unceremoniously spat out of the warp before the WHOLE wavering portal catches the invisible thing in its... mouth? Entrance? And begins to feed.

All around them, kobolds and orcs wail and claw at their eyes, trying to stave off the incipient headache stemming from seeing a tear in reality eating what amounts to antimatter. They scream even more when the portal contorts its form into some impossible non-euclidean shape, prompting Boss Bawss to toss it some more nothing.

"Dat's right, you do all dis work for da kobolds, an' all you get is da taste of kobold feet, huh? Why don't you come with me? We got dis nice place, see..."

Another few bits of nothingness disappear into that gaping maw, and the ogre and the thing that really shouldn't be alive, animate, or at all aware of anything appear to seal some sort of deal.

>Nothingness acquired!
>Space-Time Anomaly Portal tamed!

Boss Bawss Fistboss calmly stows his newfound friend within the nothingness, and then proceeds to unravel his nothingness and wrap it around the everpresent (but frankly indescribable) hat perched upon his brow, before looking over at the orcs and the kobolds. They're still staring at him like a pack of deer and a pack of wolves faced not only with headlights, but with headlights confusing enough to cause an existential crisis strong enough to completely upset the food chain.

Apologies, but I'm going to have to end the thread early tonight; I think I've hit the limit of how much I can do quest related stuff with the schedule I'm on and the amount of sleep I've been getting. Without, like, ending up with an hour and a half between posts.

I'll do my best to get the next quest thread out sometime soon, hopefully next week, but that's going to depend on how badly I get my ass beaten by these deadlines I'm facing down.

Until next time- thanks for following Ogre Civ Quest, as short as tonight's thread was! I'll tally up the votes and we'll pick up from there next time.

>[C] DIPLOMACY. Tell the Kobolds and the Orcs that neither of them understands the basic fabric of reality. The universe doesn't need a constant river of sacrificed blood to keep on going. There's no plan that everything can follow.

It's Ogres all the way down. You can fight it, squeezing your eyes shut and with your fingers jammed in your ears until your head pops like. . . one of them popping things that gets a mess everywhere, or you can grab ahold and go along for the ride.

But what you can't do is try and keep reality workings the way you think it should with blood sacrifices, and cold logical calculations. Because Ogres have been focused into a purpose now.

And it's either get on board or get gone.
