[Maiden Voyage. First Quest. Let's see what happens.]

You are Alyara Veranir.

You were orphaned at the tender age of eleven, when the warring clan of Kaedren attacked your village. Your mother had passed in childbirth, and your father, much like the other men, was killed defending the village. As the barbarians had discovered you, there were shouts from outside as a unit of Dremnar Knights happened upon your village while passing through. They drove off the Kaedren, saving you and the others (children, infirm and elderly).

Upon seeing your

they realized you were marked you as a possessor of magic. As the Dremnar Knights are the peacekeepers of the land of Atrena, they often take in orphans such as yourself into their ranks.

[]Despite your demure
[]Even with your laid-back
[]Due to your aggressive

personality, you agreed to join with them when offered. Your whole life had been in this village, and there was nothing for you to go back to. The rest of your villagers moved to another, but you wanted to stop the Kaedren, as well as the other warring clans, that have caused rampant chaos for the land of Atrena, goals that aligned well with the Dremnar Knights.

You entered their academy, quickly finding that despite your drive to succeed, you were relatively mediocre. Others outperformed you in swordsmanship, and both elemental and spiritual magic. However, unlike others, you did have a penchant for all three, something that has proved useful during your training.

Now, at seventeen, you and the other recruits are near the graduation ceremony. Giddy as you are, you manage to fall asleep, and after a fitful night’s sleep, you awaken to a loud knock at your door…

Thud-thud-thud.

“Aly!” The voice on the other side is loud and a bit grating to your ears at the moment as you try to roll over and shut it out. “You awake yet?” Trelthar calls from the other side. One of your first friends, his father is one of the knights here. He takes after his father in stride, being quite skilled with the axe, as well as his early growth spurt.

Inside, a mixture of sleep-talk and incomprehensible grunting comes from you as you sit up. “Is it that time already?” you sleepily call out towards the door. Your inability to fall asleep last night due to excitement had led to your similar inability to awaken. Sitting up, you give a long stretch, fiery hair something of a mess at the moment.

Forcing yourself out of bed, you realize that you had, in your excitement, fallen asleep with clothing on, which had given you a rather…attractive…design on your face. “Great…” you mutter as you begin searching for your recruit uniform.

“Vrand asked me to come over and check on you to make sure you were up. He didn’t think you’d get much sleep with how excited you were last night.” A loud guffaw came from the other side of the door, leading you to grumble in response. “Am I good to come in?” he asks.

“Yeah if you want to see me naked,” you call back, being mid-way through changing before realizing it was entirely possible for Trel to come in. “Just kidding, Trel! Don’t come in or I swear-“ you begin, before hearing another bout of laughter on the other side of the door.

Realizing that Trel probably isn’t going to just go away until you’re ready, you decide to…

You give a low grunt as you pull on your other boot, looking to at least have both of them on. You give a small nod to yourself in the mirror, brushing a few strands of hair from your face, running the wooden comb through the strands as quickly as you can without pulling out every piece of hair on your head.

“Hat. Hat hat hat,” you chant to yourself as you look around, trying to find where it had been placed in the excitement of last night. You frown as you glance around once more, trying to figure out just where in the bloody hell you’d placed it. Heaving a small sigh, you glance back towards the door. You had considered inviting Trel in with just your underclothes on, (not that he hadn’t seen it before during training,) but felt you should at least be mildly presentable. “You can come in,” you call out, your emerald gaze still hunting that damned hat.

The handle turns before the door opens, Trelthar taking a step inside. Built like his father, Trel was a little husky, but the training has shaped him well. Dark hair, short (of course,) and puberty-stubble of the same color gave him that awkward look of a male caught between boy and man. “That’s a cute design on your face- you think of it yourself?” he asks, earning an admonishing look.

“I wish. Just as talented when I sleep as I am when I’m awake,” you shoot back before you give an exasperated sigh. “I can’t find my hat,” you eventually confess, looking more than a touch upset. It had been something you had found in a market place during one of the various ‘training trips’ you all had taken, and as it matched your uniform, you had taken to wearing it nearly all the time.

Trel gives a small shrug, but knows the value of your hat to you. “Want me to help?” he offers.

Had it been anything else, you wouldn’t be that upset. You’d showed up to training before missing your jacket or insignia, but never your hat. Rolling with the punches is something you practically wrote the book on, but you couldn’t quite put the hat out of your mind. “Please,” you say in response, something that, while a bit unlike you, was understood by Trel without even a bit of a joking response. Nearly every one of the recruits knew of your love for your hat.

“Yeah, no problem. Especially since I see it now,” he said, giving his signature guffaw as he nodded up to the top of your wardrobe.

You blink, turning to look, craning your neck backwards as you aimed to look at the top. “Are you sure? I don’t see it,” you retort, and the male gives a sigh of pseudo-consternation as he makes his way across your room. His growth spurt was more apparent indoors than out, and as you only came up to his shoulder, it was, at times, difficult to come to terms with that. At least Vrand was still within your estimated height levels.

Reaching up, the male pulls the scarlet hat down from atop the wardrobe, dusting it slightly and making certain the feather was at its prime before handing it to you. “Don’t you use magic or whatever? Can’t you just wave your magic wand and make it come to you?” he asks as you snatch it from his hands.

Moving to the mirror, you place the cap upon your head, adjusting it to make sure it looks just right before looking over your shoulder at him. “Yeah, because magic works like that. Dumbass,” you follow the insult with a teasing grin, knowing that his understanding of magic was…far less than stellar. “Thank you for getting my hat. I assume you’re ready?” you ask, Trel returning with a nod.

Now that the crisis had been averted, the butterflies had once more begun to build in your stomach. Still, you weren’t put off by such things as nerves, and nodded over to Trel. “Well then, Sir Trelthar,” you announce, “let us depart.”

Trel, having next to no sense of chivalry, merely cut a striking pose and sauntered out, leaving you to follow behind and lock the door behind you. “We’ve still got an hour or so, judging by the sun,” he offers, glancing to you. “What do you wanna do?”

>Find Vrand before it starts. After all, friends stick together.

“I figured we’d go and find Vrand,” you respond, glancing up to the other. “I imagine that he’ll want to be sure we’re ready. That’s why he sent you, after all.”

Trel scratches his stubble (a rather annoying habit he’d picked up lately) before shrugging. “Yeah. That’s probably for the best.”

“Did he ask you to find me this morning?”

Your male companion nods. “Yeah. My dad wanted to see me in the training hall about some last minute preparation, and I passed him by in there.”

You couldn’t help but to give a small chuckle. “Sounds like Vrand. He was probably heading to the library. Come on, let’s go,” you call cheerfully as you set out at a walk towards the keep, which housed both the training hall and library.

Vrandimus was among the brightest of those graduating and was skilled, even at his young age, in spiritual magics. Having saved him from a pair of bullies (with Trel at your side) you had managed to become fast friends. While he and Trel often kept their ‘work’ conversations to a minimum given their vast differences in specialization, they got along well enough outside of it.

Once inside, (a path you knew well from visiting your friend,) you step into the library itself. The library was modest, but had a fair number of books and scrolls on various topics. You’d been in here time and again, but didn’t spend nearly the amount of time that Vrand did. You don’t see anyone in the main room…

>Call out for Vrand- there’s probably no one besides him in here anyway
>Be polite and search quietly- he might be near the back

Sounds like the most laid-back option here. Unless we're also a social butterfly. Are we also a social butterfly? Otherwise, I'd go with:

>See if you can’t find the library keeper to ask about Vrand’s whereabouts
>>
>>33504830
>Be polite and search quietly- he might be near the back
This is a sneaking mission.
>>
>Call out for Vrand- there’s probably no one besides him in here anyway

The 'Laid-back' mostly just influences 'how' Alyara handles the choices made. Her personality affects the choices made, not determines them.

>See if you can't find the library keeper to ask about Vrand's whereabouts

That's not how it works at all. Asking somebody instead of searching for yourself does not make you a social butterfly.
>>
>See if you can’t find the library keeper to ask about Vrand’s whereabouts.

You glance around once more, giving a small frown as you realize that Vrand isn’t in eyeshot. “Can’t make this easy on us, can he?” you ask, giving a small smile as you step inside. Glancing over your shoulder, you see Trel inhale, and you can’t help but give a grin as you reach up, covering his mouth. “You need to be quiet, young man. This is a library.”

“But there’s not even anyone here, Aly. What could it hurt?” the male mumbles through your fingers before you pull them away at the sound of something from one of the bookshelves.

A man in his early fifties backs from between two shelves, having a small pile of books in his arms. Despite his age, he seems to hold them rather well. “Alyara, Trelthar,” the male speaks, the tone dropping substantially in appreciation at the second name. “How can I help you? Isn’t your graduation today?”

Not intimidated by the sharp tone like most, you give the older man your best winning smile. “Hey Larandel,” not at all put off by the slight darkening in his expression at using his first name. “Have you seen Vrand around? We were just looking to meet up before the graduation, that’s all.”

[1/2]
>>
>>33505460

Larandel Narez, the dour-and-sour library keeper, looks down his glasses at you before he shakes his head. “You would do well to remember your manners, Alyara. Many of your senior officers will not take kindly to that informality. Regardless, yes. Vrandimus is in the adjoining chamber. It would do you well to get him moving. He appears to have lost track of time, I would wager.”

You give the man another smile. “Thanks!” you offer before giving a wave, and moving towards the adjoining chamber. Larandel merely watches you and Trel leave before he steps back between the book cases, continuing to sort his books.

In the adjoining chamber, where the books that Trel would never even look at are held, there are but a few rows. As you enter, you can see a form between the book cases, holding a book. While you can’t see them directly, it stands to reason that it’s Vrand.

You pause, having the thought to just…stroll right up and pat Vrand on the shoulder, when you realize that it might not, in fact, be him. Instead, you give Trel a look, the male giving a shrug in response as you do your best to indicate that he should be quiet. After a moment, he complies, and remains near the doorway, well aware that his size can cause problem.

You quietly move forward as you make it to the opposite side of the bookshelf. Given they were brought in from elsewhere, they have a wooden backing, making it impossible to simply…look through, much to your chagrin. Not to be deterred, you slink forward toward the far end of the book shelf, before gingerly lifting a hand to the ostentatious feather to keep it out of your way as you peek around the corner.

Thankfully, the person there has their nose buried so far into the book that they don’t even notice you watching them.

That person is also definitely not Vrand. Female, with a dark blue robe that shows both of her pale shoulders, you can see that this is not your friend…but from behind, you’re not quite sure who she is. She looks marginally familiar, but-

“Alyara? What are you doing?” you hear a soft voice ask from behind you. You nearly jump, pulling back towards the middle of the room. Vrand, his rust-brown hair falling over one eye per usual (no matter how many times you’ve asked him to cut it), holds a book in one hand, his visible brown-green eye staring at you in confusion.

“Eh?” the girl between the bookcases asks, before she turns, and now that you can see the sharp nose and cheekbones, you can’t believe you didn’t realize it was Amelia. “Aly?” she asks, arching a single, scarlet eyebrow, her lime-green eyes dancing. “What the hell are you doing here?” she asks, putting a hand on her hip, her other around a closed book.

The girl’s question was far more prominent, given her louder voice and choice of verbage. If you ignored her in favor of Vrand, who knows what she might do? Not that you cared all that much- you were one of the few who could actually deal with Amelia.

Amelia Zynidal was a fairly skilled Elemental magic user, coming from two parents who also specialized in such. She wasn’t near the top of the class, like Vrand, but she tended to let her parentage speak for her, rather than her skills.

You pass an apologetic look to Vrand before looking back to Amelia, noting Trel entering the room, now that he no longer had to be quiet. “I was just in here to get Vrand. He sent Trel to make sure that I was awake for the graduation ceremony, and then came back here to get his nose stuck in a book,” you respond, before looking at her. “What about you?”

Amelia gives a small, scoffing laugh. “I should have supposed you weren’t in here to learn. Which is why I’m here. My dad told me that the ceremony isn’t /just/ a ceremony, and that there’s a final test involved. So I’m studying up, just in case,” she responded, before opening her book again, the object staying afloat on a small disc of wind.

“A final test?” you ask, looking at Vrand and Trel, both of which give a shrug in response. Before you can ask more, the bells in the tower chime, indicating that there are but fifteen minutes until the top of the hour.

>Time to go! Head to the Ceremony and try to avoid being late, leaving Amelia to do whatever she’s doing.

As the chime went off, Trel gave a low grunt. “C’mon Aly, we gotta go. If we’re late for this, my dad’s going to kill me.”

You nod, about to take a step to follow them, when you glance back at Amelia, still studying. Due to the fact that not many people could handle the snooty girl, she didn’t have a lot in the way of friends, and that made you wonder if she was planning to attend with anyone else or not. Then again, since she knew about that test…

“Hey Amelia, you wanna come with?” you ask, Trel giving you a look, while Vrand merely continued to study the book he was holding. “We’re all friends, right? If you know anything about this final test…”

The scarlet-haired girl shakes her head at you as she closes her book. “You three are utterly hopeless without me. Come on, I’ll fill you in on what I know,” she spoke, her tone seeming rather exasperated, but you could tell that she was at least happy that she wasn’t left behind.

The four of you make your way out of the library, talking in hushed whispers as Amelia informs you that there will be a field test to make certain that the candidates will be able to handle the knight assignments. They split the students into groups of four, prioritizing teamwork between them, and give the specifics then. As far as she knows, it’s strictly pass or fail based on performance- there aren’t a certain number of teams that will or will not pass.

“Well then it’ll be us four, right?” Trel asks as you near the grand hall, where the ceremony will be held. “We all work together pretty well.”

You nod. “I hope so. And thanks to Amelia, now we’ve got an edge,” you chime in with a small grin.

[1/?]
>>
>>33507181
“Even still, we should not underestimate the task assigned to us,” Vrand speaks up, his quiet voice almost indistinguishable from the din of the crowd around you. “Only by going at this with our all can we hope to succeed.”

“Aw, don’t be such a worrywart, Vrand. We’ll be fine,” you respond, your grin spreading as you make your way into the grand hall. He gives a worried grunt, but doesn’t respond more. He’s always tended to worry about everything, so you leave him to his thoughts as the seating area for those watching is nearly full.

“We’d better move, children,” Amelia pipes up from behind you. You note that she’s right- the hall is rapidly filling. There are nearly a hundred in your level, and the designated area for them is just about full.

“Maybe if you and Vrand weren’t busy reading books, we woulda gotten a seat,” Trel grumbles as you make your way down. Amelia gives a huff and Vrand another worried sound as you make your way down to the front. Near the back are four places to stand in relative proximity, your group splitting off to await the announcement.

An elderly man, Magister Doronar, and an armored Knight in his early forties, Theresnar Giller, came to the front stage. The Magister, a master of both Elemental and Spirit magics, opened the Graduation. “Welcome, one and all!” he called, his feeble voice carried by his magical power. “You recruits have trained hard, these past six years. Now, it is time to see the fruits of your labor. You wish to become Knights, yes?” he asked, earning a resounding cheer from those gathered. “I see, I see. But exuberance is often not enough. There will be challenges, danger, and risk. To speak on this, I present Lord-Knight Giller to speak.”

Giller was his dad’s boss, and he had a stick up his ass so far sometimes you could see it if he opened his mouth wide enough. “Cadets!” he called, a salute happening instantly amongst those gathered. “You are here to become Knights! But let it be heard that your tests, on paper and with your trainers, were only preparation!” A murmur broke out in the crowd. Amelia turns to you, giving you a wink, before she returns her attention to the front.

“A final test! One that proves that you have the mettle of a Knight! We ask that you, along with compatriots we have chosen for you, complete a task. Failure to do so will earn you a ticket back to training to attempt again. Teamwork is essential! No matter how strong you think you are, or how powerful, you cannot do this alone!” The Lord-Knight nodded once more, the murmuring having gone quiet at the explosion of his voice.

He continued, announcing the groups that were to be formed. As you had suspected, you, Trell, and Vrand were put together. However, the fourth name he calls is not Amelia, but another Elemental mage, one that has rivaled with Vrand often. Vrand looks uncomfortable at the news, but does not say anything.

>Keep quiet and accept this, apologizing to Amelia later
>Keep quiet for now, but see if you can’t work out a team trade once the Ceremony is over.
>Stand, interrupt, and offer the suggestion of Amelia for your team, based on what you know.

Teamwork is essential right?
Before, during and after the exam.

We like this chick. She's outwardly cold, but inside we can tell she likes the companionship. We can't leave her out to dry.

You frown, looking to Vrand. The elemental mage is one of the ones that had bullied him before, and you know that is the very last thing your group needs. Looking to Amelia, you can see that she too looks upset, though she is hiding it well. Trel’s hands are opening and closing, as if he wants to stand, but he doesn’t want to disgrace his father.

You exhale. It’s on your shoulders now. As an orphan, you don’t have anyone to answer to, and rules be damned. They want teamwork? Let’s show them teamwork. You wait for Giller to finish speaking on your assignment, before you take a breath. “Lord-Knight Giller!” you call out. The man on the raised platform blinks, as if confused.

“Who was that?” he asks, his grey eyes searching the crowd.

Vrand and Amelia have matching confused expressions as they peer at you. Trel, on the other hand, seems worried. “Don’t get expelled,” he mutters to you under his breath before you step out of formation, the other cadets only too happy to get out of your way.

“Alyara Veranir, sir,” you announce as you come forward, standing near the front of the group. You remember Larandel’s words, doing your best to keep focused on etiquette, even if you were likely going against every tradition, right now. “If it is all right, I wish to ask your permission to change a teammate.”

Giller and Doronar exchange glances, looking a bit…caught off guard. “While I admire your pluck, Cadet Veranir, I don’t know that this is the time to discuss this.”

You stand your guard, relaxed even as you were right now. The worst that would happen would be punishment, or possibly having to repeat a year. You’d dealt with worse before. “On the contrary, sir, you yourself said that teamwork was essential. I don’t believe that should extend to just the test itself.” The cadets murmured behind you, and you heard more than a few laughs, but having watched your father be killed, this was nothing to you.

The Lord-Knight paused for a moment, not sure how to respond, before Doronar nodded. “Go on, child. Speak your mind. I am curious what is so important as to interrupt the ceremony.”

You nod in thanks, before taking a breath. “Erasmir Llend is no ally of mine, nor of Trelthar, and certainly not Vrandimus. If he is to join our crew, there would be dissention and aggression before we even left the city. Amelia Zynidal is an Elemental mage of comparable strength, and she would fit better with us. Erasmir would only set us up for failure,” you conclude, realizing that your stomach is doing somersaults, even as normally cool as you are.

Giller looked ready to speak when a haughty voice called out from the group. “Fine by me. Give them Zynidal. I’d rather not take my chances with dead weight like Veranir anyway.” Erasmir, a handsome young man with red-violet hair, stood with his arms crossed.

Your teeth clench at the phrase dead weight, but you keep your mouth shut, having done enough damage for one day.

The Lord-Knight gives a small nod. “I see. Seeing as you had similar classes throughout, we assumed you would be a good fit. Amelia Zynidal!” he called out, the scarlet-haired girl jumping at the sudden call of her name.

“Sir?” she asked, keeping her calm front, even though her knuckles were white on the book she carried.

“You have any objection to the change?”

“No sir.”

Giller nodded. “So it shall be. Magister Doronar, make a note, please,” he spoke, before he turned his gaze back on you. “Veranir. Get back into formation,” he spoke, though his tone wasn’t nearly as harsh as it had been when first speaking to you.

“Yes sir. Thank you, sir,” you offer, your heart hammering in your chest as you make your way back to your position. Amelia doesn’t make eye contact as you pass, though Vrand gives you a shy smile.

Trel looks uncertain, still, but appears relieved that it ended well.

You can still feel your heart hammering in your chest, but you know in that rapidly beating muscle you made the right choice.

That'll be all for tonight, folks. Hope I didn't do too poorly for a first go. I'm open to any and all criticism to make future quests that much better.

Good first run, post twitter and next quest time?
>>
>>33507804

Twitter, huh? Never used it before, but I suppose I could look into it.

More than likely, I'll be running it on either Thursday or Friday nights, depending on my schedule. Possibility is also for Monday afternoon, but I can't imagine the slower post rate would be conducive for it.
>>
>>33507794
Yeah, that was nice. I'd love to hop in on the next one too.
>>
>>33507794
Love what you are doing with this so far and I look forward to it's continuation.

Standard question of: When do you plan to be running next and do you have a twitter for updates?
>>
>>33507827

Twitter's useful for updates, see: https://twitter.com/Eisenstern/lists/quest-runner-directory
>>
>>33507794
I had fun. :D

Can't wait for more!

Hopefully we can get an art-fag to draw up some fan art in the future.
>>
>>33507831
Glad you liked it!
>>33507841
Thanks much! >>33507827 partially answers the next-run question, and in the meantime I'll see about getting a Twitter (and possibly a wiki if necessary for all these NPCs) setup.
>>33507864
Okay, seems like twitter is indeed the way to go. I'll see about getting on that tomorrow.
>>33507880
I would be fine with that. I didn't have any real art so far mostly due to the fact that I wasn't certain what Aly would look like. But now that we know...
>>
>>33507905
What if the thread 404s, though? They're pretty quick to make. Just whip up an account real quick and shoot us a link. You don't have to full out customize anything right off the bat, that can easily wait until later.
>>
Someone needs to archive this to suptg archives.

I'll probably fill some information in tomorrow, but it'll work as a good base to keep everything, I believe. Everyone should have access to it.

@tgWhitefog is the twitter name. At least I think so. I don't social media.
