Sit a moment, dear listeners, and I shall tell you the tale of the Apprentice, who was stolen away to the depths of the Wastes, and did find herself in the manse of the dead witch Juliana.

Once upon a time, I was a simple shreep-tender, student and apprentice to the wizard Adan, but that was long ago, before I found myself entangled in demon-raised chaos and fled my home and master.

On the far side of the vaults of the Empire of the Dragon spread the Great Southern Wastes, and here the great witch Juliana ruled until she was slain - murdered by the coven of witches that set the Crow-People upon me, scoured the Wastes for me, and locked me in their time-haunted tower by the sea. They meant to induct me into their fold, and it was there where I learned I have no true name, but for me to join them seemingly meant the death of one of their own!

Such a ritual disturbed a great many of them, and before my eyes my unwanted escort slew another of her kind, winnowing their ranks even further! So heated was their fray that none noticed when the crow-woman Vill and my loyal shreep rescued me, save for the scuttlepede Skednan, and it was quickly brought to bear and used to carry us from the witches' awful encampment.

Thus it was that lost in the far edge of the Wastes, in the company of Vill and the shieldwork Benjamin, we came upon the Frog-Men, end of their race and a creation of the dead witch Juliana, now lost and sad without purpose or kin. They pledged hospitality in this fierce land out of their own kindness, and took us then to the island where Juliana made her lodge, but none would approach for they feared a curse was settled upon it.

A dread feeling washes inside my breast as the isle nears, for the moon is cut now by clouds and the wet sand ahead seems to groan with irritation at my trespass.

Well does the warning of the Frog-Men's leader echo in my mind - this is cursed ground.
>>
The building, whatever it was, has been reduced to a few blackened timbers collapsing against one another, and already the brackish waters of the Wastes have begun to reclaim it, though nothing grows on the island itself and the nearest life is a sickly dying weed a stone's throw from the grounds.
>>
Suddenly, a throbbing in my temple and a strange tug at the edge of my perception sends me to near-panic, for some fell magic now gathers! The black longsword, prize pulled from the depths of the Dragon Empire's vaults, I hold aloft as if a talisman to ward away the power I feel charging the very air itself!
>>
I have only a moment to turn and react as the stagnant water begins to churn and roil, and then-
>>

- a ghastly figure rises, bound together only by some awful force, and turns in midair, gazing down upon me!
