It's still quiet.

I am Itsukuma Masami, I'm currently standing in my home's garden, wearing a frilly dress, holding at card in my left hand that can seemingly transform me into the stronger person that I wish to be. Or maybe it just changes my clothes to have more ribbons, it's still unclear how it works, really.
The garden is an orchestra of birds singing, and Cicadas chirping. I can hear my heartbeat slow down to match my breathing.

Mom is staring at me like she is expecting me to say something. I think I may be looking back at her with the same expectation, even though I'm still confused if she answered my question or not. I should try rephrasing it,

"The light that this card was eminating, it reached out and absorbed the monster I was fighting. Do you know how I did that?"
"No, I really don't, sorry." She has a look of genuine confusion on her face

Something about this doen't add up at all.
"Didn't you make this card?" I ask, waving it around between my thumb and index finger
"Oh, no no, I didn't make THAT particular card, I've had that one for a very long time. I've never used it the way you're using it right now." She replies, looking a tad sullen.
You never used it this way?

"Can I see you interact with the card again?" She asks
"Yeah, sure!" I chirp, I actually feel proud to be able to show her something she's never seen before.

I take the card in my left hand, and-
"No, not that one." She interrupts, "I meant the one with the mark on it."

Oh.

I put the other card away, and then take the other card into my hand.
That's strange, the black marking on it has changed. The black mark has turned into an X marking, the corners of the card almost dripping with the substance that composes the inky void in the face of it.

"So, same thing as last time?" I ask
"Let's both try, at the same time." She says, approaching me.

Mom's hand raises up to the card, she gently presses her finger on the corner.
Wait, the ink on the card, it's rippling?

"OW!" Mom's hand draws back as she inspects her finger.

"What happened!?" I lose focus of the card for a second.

"I-I, um." Mom gazes at her finger, and I get a look at it too, seems to be a small cut of some kind?
"I think it was just a papercut." She says, laughing softly.

I look back at the card, and the ink has shifted AGAIN, now it's trying to regroup at the other end of the card where I'm holding it.

I let go of the card instinctively, it's now floating in mid-air.
Mom's face goes slightly pale.

That's a bad sign, I should get started.

I stretch out my hands and focus on it, the emptiness inside the card, its desire to shine through the black cloud that has taken it over.
Its golden glean starts to shine brighter and brighter. The light struggling to break free from the black prison that is holding it.

Slowly, the glossy ink on the card starts to ripple again. It stretches and bends across the face, it's trying to completely consume it!

The ink slowly eats it completely. Leaving little more than a large, black husk of its former self floating before me. The ink has taken everything about the card as it's own.
But I'm not going to give up yet.

I close my eyes, and think about the glow that is barely shining through the darkness.

The image of what it must look like becomes visible, in a void of darkness, it shines more brilliantly than a distant star. The light it gives off slowly expanding to illuminate even the darkest of spaces in the well that it has found itself in.

Hey, that's strange, I smell something.. burning?

>>

It's just a semi-sentient prison tar. No big deal.
>>
>>33589946
I keep up my attack, the shining star becomes even more visible as the darkness surrounding it tries to regroup for another stab at it.

I can't see what is causing it, but there's a hissing noise, and it's getting louder.

The darkness forms into a literal spear, as it flies at the ball of warmth and kindness that is floating before me, in my mind.

The hissing noise is very audible now. It's accompanied by hurried footsteps walking up behind me.

My hand, or it's hand, it's hard to know which, reaches out and takes hold of it. The same shine that flows through the card envelopes the spear and turns it into mere ash. The inky void surrounding the card begins to narrowly cave in onto it.

The hissing sound is almost unbearable now. It has become so loud that it feels like I am standing in a frying pan while grease and vapor dances around on the surface.
The temperature that surrounds me has turned itself up to complement the sound. I can feel a set of cooling hands rest themselves on my shoulders.

The inky void in my mind slowly, slowly, slowly starts to press down onto it. Suffocating and strangling the glowing aura that should be aflame in the darkness. I can feel myself getting short of breath, yet, I'm not afraid. A pulse of anger and fury rips through the endless night, shearing it in half.

My eyes snap open to reveal a melting blob of burning tar, some tendrils barely holding onto the card as the surface of it fizzes wildly with light. The few strands of blank ink on its surface bubble and boil with righteous fury.

My head tilts upward,
"Wait, M-Mom!?"

Her hands glow, her hair pulses wildly with light, and her face has taken on a scowl that I have never seen before.
If this were any other occasion, I'm not sure I would even recognize her as my mother.

She slowly begins to drop the facade, her hair continuing to glow as her hands and muscles release their tension on my shoulders.

Her arm wraps around my shoulder for support. I can hear her heart pounding like a drum, despite not being close to her body. Did that really take so much energy from her?

We both slump down into the sand, she rests her head on my shoulder.

"Thank you, Mom." is all I can say right now. She merely sighs in response.

The glistening card remains floating in the air as the last few drops of ink fall off of it. The boiling mass of tar making a lump below it.

But suddenly, the mass of ink swells, and then stands on end.

We both dart to our feet just in time to see several tendrils swipe at us from the blackened mass.

"Stand back!" Mom yells, her fists start to glow.

Wait, she can do that too?

Her hands stretch out into flattened palms as they strike the tendrils in a one-two punch. Sending them back into the mass. The bulging mess starts to emit another hissing sound.

I think I understand now.

I leap forward into action, sprinting at the floating card, still hovering in mid-air.
"W-WHERE ARE YOU GOING?" Mom is studdering slightly,
I look back toward her, one of the tendrils has grabbed onto her arm, and is pulling her toward the mass.
My head snaps back around just in time to watch a tendril pass a few inches from my face, but quickly disintegrate in the glowing aura that is protecting me.

As I approach the bubbling mass, the sizzling noise becomes unbearable again as it tries to move in several separate directions at once to escape the aura. Causing it to stretch outward like silly putty.
At the same time, a part of it regroups and flings itself at me!

My fist counters the massive blob with a crack and a fizzle, I don't even know where I learned how to punch like that.

The part that attacked me was merely a diversion, the rest of it appears to be trying to jump back onto the card!

Which is exactly what I was expecting it to do.

The ink didn't get off the card because it didn't want it anymore, it got off the card because the glowing aura is like heat to it. It got off the card to get away from the energy I had put into it.

And now that the source of the energy is rapidly approaching it, it's trying to jump back onto the much 'cooler' surface again, away from me.

All I have to do is get the card before it does.
And I think I have a way to do that.

What remains of the blob surrounds the card, the energy I poured into it starting to fade as it slowly starts to close around it.

I think about the glow, the warmth and love that is contained within the card, that is contained within me. And I think about that love.

Slowly moving to my hand

I can feel the wave and vibrations of it as it moves through my body, up my chest, around my shoulder, down my arm. It feels like a spring that is slowly bounding it's way through my body. Every inch of the way, it picks up speed and momentum as it moves.

My hand is starting to glow

With a quick swipe, I reach in and grab the card. Just as the blob tries to close around it, my hand's energy pushing it away and causing it to jump back onto the ground not too far away from me.

There's an empty void on the front of this card, like there should be someone there, but there isn't.
Yet, as I grab it, I suddenly notice something on the face. It's a blue lady in a well-kept outfit, it looks military in origin, like she is a sea captain!

Suddenly, I can feel the lack of energy in the rest of my body, and my transformation drops off, leaving me in my normal clothes again.

I can see the blob moving out of the corner of my eye.
[2/?]
>>
>>33592831
This card, there's something about it, the same warm feeling is being eminated by it. I can see the lady on the front of it, yet it doesn't have the same feel as the other card.

The ink slowly starts to regroup, though there is much less of it now.

The lady on the front feels like a painting. Like she's standing in the card, but at the same time, is completely hollow.

Now the mass slowly starts to take shape, regrouping smaller peices into itself, it stands up again and readies another tendril in my direction.

That must be so sad, being all alone in a sea of darkness. I may have been the first person who had ever reached out to her.

The long, syrup-like cord flies in my direction, taking the rest of the ink with it.

Slowly, I reach back out to the lady in the card.

CRACK

A metal blade stops the blotch in mid-flight, it remains suspended in the air.

I search around for whoever could have done that, but there's no one else here except Mom and I. And Mom is currently kneeled down in the sand, looking extremely fatigued and confused.

I feel a distinct weight in my right hand.

The well-trimmed outfit in the card is now on my back, I can see the shoulders and the well-laid tassles and buttons adorning my front and my sides. In my right hand is a sabre, well-polished and gleaming with a blue aura.

The monster seems to be frozen in mid-air, seemingly falling, yet never touching the ground, he takes another strike at me.

And it misses,
Despite me standing right next to it.

It takes another swipe, misses, and another, miss, and again.

Eventually he is moving his entire bulbous mass is striking with every possible angle and swipe. Yet none of it connects, it's as if the distance between me and him increases between every swipe and jab. Despite me never moving a muscle, only standing around, looking shocked.

I move the sword to my left hand, it doesn't feel as sure there, but it does feel much more controlled.

My arm extends outward, and I charge the beast.

A flurry of swipes and stabs are all I remember next, every time it seemed like the sword had found a resting place, my arm would find a new angle and direction to move with the sabre.

All that is left are millions of tiny, black pieces floating in the air. The blue energy pulsating from the sword forms into a mist that circles above me and wisks it all away.

I turn back around, feeling rather proud of myself-
Only to find Mom sprawled out on the ground.

OH GOD

"MOM!"

"M-Mom", my words seem more like weak moans

Her face is a blush red, she groans slightly and tries to move, but immediately slumps back down into the sand.

Mommy, please, please be okay.

--

I can EASILY carry her with this transformation, even though she's over twice my size. I pick her up out of the sand and take her back inside, laying her down and putting an ice pack on her forehead.

Her hair has returned to normal now. She seems to be stirring slightly as I put a glass of water by her.

She looks up at me, a single tear forms at the corner of her eye,
"Y-You're not hurt, are you?"
Why are you worried about me?

"I'm fine! You're the one that just fell down! Here! Drink!"
Her eyes flutter open, she drinks from the cup before replying,
"T-thanks sweetie, I'm fine. Really. I just got a little too hot, that's all."

I don't believe you!

She tries to stand up, but I quickly keep her down. She shouldn't be standing when she's like this.
"No, Mom, Rest."

"I-It's fine, I'll be okay in a few minutes."

I can feel the tears in my eyes welling up again.
Without even saying anything, I throw myself into her arms.

I just begin crying. She slowly runs her hand through my now shoulder-length hair.

We sit there like that for what feels like an hour.

"Please Mom, Please don't ever do that again."
I'm hugging her tighter, the tears aren't letting up.

"I just overdid it a bit, it's fine"
"No it's not fine!"
I bury my face in her shirt, she wraps her arms around my neck.

"It's fine Masami, Everything is fine now"
She's pretending to be mature again. If she was really mature then this wouldn't have happened.

"..Is there anything I can do to help? Do you want something to eat? Do you want to go lay down? Anything?" I ask, I can feel the worry creeping up back into my throat.

"It's fine, sweetie, let's just take a bath and go to bed for the night. All I really need is some rest."
"O-Okay."

She starts to sit up, I can tell she's having problems sitting upright. I'm having to support her, even though she hasn't even stood up yet.

After some fumbling, we both eventually manage to take a bath, with me having to make sure she didn't fall asleep on several occasions while she was standing up. Eventually I leave her in her room so she can get changed for bed while I go handle cleaning up after everything that happened today.

--

"Julie", I say, grabbing another plate and scrubbing it clean.
"I'll name that card 'Julie', it will go along well with Haruko."
I smile, maybe it's a little, weird, to be naming those things after people, but I know that it's how I would want to be treated.

Maybe someday they can tell me their own names.

I'm finally done cleaning up after dinner, making sure that everything will be ready for the morning, I make my way to my room.

..Just in time for me to look over and notice Mom's door open.
And then I walk in to notice her laying half-naked on her bed, completely asleep. It seems she only got halfway through the 'getting dressed' portion before she just slumped over into her bed and went to sleep.

I drape the blanket over her. I'm tempted to sleep here tonight as well, especially with all the crazy things that happened today. But she needs her privacy, and I need to get to bed before it gets any later. Shutting the door as I leave the room, I briefly whisper:

"I'll wake you up in the morning, but you better not think that I'm making breakfast for you."

Good night

Okay, players.
Now we do the after-thread Q&A, but there's something else I want to discuss.

Someone made a really good suggestion to me: allow you all to vote on which story arc the quest goes to next based on the title of the arc.

What do you think, Yes/No?

Also related, How was this thread? Was it any faster than how the quest has been normally moving at?

Also it seems I may have waited too long to ask that question, granted this thread went way longer than normal because of late start time.

I will pose the same question on twitter so anyone who has opinions on it can answer there.

I see no issues with choosing an arc, but perhaps base it on actions rather than a vote if possible. Pacing for this thread seems to be ok with us finishing up a card and some slice of life afterwards.

I archived this thread because I might fall asleep soon. I'll be sure to read all responses to the idea and I'll also respond on twitter if anyone wants to talk about it more there.

Sounds good, I wasn't going to specifically ask which arc to go to, that would be kind of meta.

I can base it on actions instead of a vote. That would have been the standard way to choose what arc happened next, anyway.

Also I hope so, because pacing will hopefully speed up from here. This thread was a jump-start to hopefully begin the process of getting cards and naming cards.

I hate to put it this way, but this thread was like leaving the tutorial.

I'll also have a pastebin set up fairly soon, hopefully next thread, where we can keep track of cards and their names. As well as other character facts.

As the person who suggested the idea, as long as I get cool fake episode titles out of it, I don't care how we decide what happens next.

hmm, i'm not a really fan of the ending... yeah, it's "clean" but i prefer (light) cliffhangers... oh well

oh, and for the arcs, i agree with >>33596960

I don't like you.

Ideally there should always be something to look forward to without a minor crisis. Like our conversation with Mom tomorrow morning, or seeing our friends. Meeting Julie for realz.

I was actually wanting this thread to end on the next in-game day, because then it would have ended with trying to walk to school with Aiko, which I'm sure will be loads of fun.

But, didn't plan my runtime well enough, I'll try to do better in the future.

Thanks for running.

I wonder if I'm ever going to work in most of the really good Sakura outfits?

Thanks for the suggestion that time! It really seems like something I could experiment with.

As for episode titles, that's most certainly something I had in mind.
