I saw it.

Everyone says that I was just hallucinating from the trauma, but I KNOW what I saw. We didn't hit a deer on that road, a guy ran out and PUNCHED our car.

His arm grew all huge and he punched the hood of the car and that's why my Mom's in the hospital right now. Why doesn't anyone believe me? Is it just because I'm a kid? That guy's still out there, and there's no guarantee that he won't do the same thing to someone else!

Stupid cops.

Stupid doctors.

Stupid uncle.

I'm sick of all their fake condolences... that's why I'm here in the park now in the middle of the night. Nobody's here so I'm just gonna cool my head for a while, then I'll go back. Not like any of them will even notice that I'm gone, anyways.

Relaxing on a park bench, I lean back and look up at the moon... Mom always liked to come out to admire it on days like this.

"I hope she'll be alright..." I say out loud.
"You hope -who- will be alright?" a soft voice calls out from next to me.

...Wait, from NEXT to me!?

Slowly, I turn to the side and see a girl in a white dress and wide-brimmed hat that catches the moonlight in a really nice way. She's really pretty, but I have no idea who this chick is or why she's sitting next to me.

"You seem to be rather shaken up about something, maybe it would feel better to talk about it?" the girl says to me.

Branch insanity? Grievance against his family?
>>
"Yeah, alright," I reply. "But first, who exactly -are- you?"

I mean, she's pretty and all but my "stranger danger" sense is flaring up. For all I know, she could be one of those sexy older ladies who likes to eat up 13-year-old boys like myself.

"Oh, my apologies," she laughs. "My name is Lorelei. I just happened to be passing through when I saw you sitting here looking miserable."
"Oh," I reply.

Yeah, I -am- pretty miserable right now...

"So now that you know my name, I'm not a complete stranger anymore, right?" Lorelei says, tilting her head.
"...I guess not," I shrug. "You still interested in hearing about my crappy day?"
"That's why I asked in the first place," she replies. "And who knows, maybe I'll be able to help you out somehow."

I very much doubt that.

But she asked, and talking about it might make me feel a little bit better. Hell, anything's better than that condescending BS I've been getting every time I try to tell my uncle that the guy who put my Mom in the hospital's still out there.

"Well," I say, taking a deep breath, "it all started last night. My Mom was driving us home from a pizza buffet place that we go to every Wednesday when she gets out of work... it's out in the sticks, so we were pretty far out from the city."
"Okay," Lorelei nods.
"So we were driving along and my Mom was talking to me about homework or something, and then BAM!" I slap my hands together as hard as I can.
"You got into an accident?"
"Not an -accident-," I say, scowling. "Someone darted out in front of my car and hit it as hard as they could."
"What, you mean like a deer?"
"No, it was a person."

Lorelei looks kind of surprised to hear this... but not too alarmed. I was expecting a gasp of shock or something but I guess she's tougher than that.

"My Mom tried to swerve so we'd avoid hitting him, but..." I take a deep breath to calm myself down since I totally expect her to start laughing at me in a minute. "...the guy spun around as we were trying to dodge him and then his arm grew maybe ten times its original size and he punched down at the hood of the car as hard as he could."
"Oh... oh my," Lorelei says, bunching her eyebrows together. "So this person attacked you?"
"YES!" I shout, filled with all kinds of relief that she's actually taking me seriously. "He wrecked the car and hurt my Mom so bad that she's in the hospital right now."

"But you yourself weren't hurt?" Lorelei asks.
"No, but I'd gladly take my Mom's place if I could," I mutter under my breath.
"I think that most people in your situation would feel the same way," she says as she adjusts her hat.
"The cops won't even PRETEND to listen to me about what happened, so I bet it's gonna end up happening again. That guy's still out there, and it's pretty clear that he doesn't care about hurting people."

Stupid worthless cops...

"Yes, I can see how that would be frustrating," Lorelei sighs. "Someone important to you has been injured and the authorities won't even lift a finger to try and catch the person responsible..."
"Don't remind me," I grumble. "I'd catch the bastard myself if I could."
"Oh?" she tilts her head.
"I dunno how, but I would if I could," I nod. "Before he can hurt anyone else."

That's what my Mom always taught me, to defend the people who can't defend themselves, just like in those shows I like to watch.

"...like a hero," I say.
"A hero?" Lorelei repeats in a confused tone. "You mean like a firefighter?"
"No," I shake my head. "You know, like a Rider! Or any of those other shows! When there's someone in danger, a hero never rests!"

Pushing myself off of the bench, I shift my weight to my side and flex my arms in the pose of the Rider from the DVDs that my aunt bought me when she went on vacation in Hawaii last year.

"And when evil monsters show up and attack people, a Rider's always there to put a stop to it before things get worse!" I say proudly. "That's how I want to be, a proud hero!"
"I see," Lorelei laughs. "But what if gaining that kind of power also causes you hardship later on?"

"It'd be worth it," I reply, crossing my arms. "Strength through adversity and all that. Nothing worth doing is ever easy."
"How manly of you," Lorelei laughs.

"...you say that, but what if your mother found out?" Lorelei asks. "Don't you think that she'd be worried for your life?"
"Yeah, but she'd be proud too," I reply. "It'd be no different from if I decided to become a cop or a fireman or whatever. A real man doesn't rum from danger when he can help."
"You sound pretty certain of that."
"I am," I reply.
"And what if you die while doing something heroic?"
"Then I get to brag to my grampa that I went out like a man when I see him up in Heaven," I reply.
"Very well, then..."

Lorelei rises to her feet and stretches her legs before taking off her hat and placing it on the bench where she was just sitting.

"I have to say, I'm moved by your resolve," Lorelei says as she runs a hand through her hair and lets it catch the breeze. "You're serious about this?"
"Why would I lie to some girl I just met?" I reply.
"Alright, I was just making sure..."

With a weird smile on her face, Lorelei snaps her fingers.

"Oops, I forgot about that part," Lorelei says as she puts her hat back on and helps me to my seat.
"Forgot about what part?" I ask. "I just got a headache, that's all. Probably because of the car crash..." I say, turning to her

and then I look into her eyes

"Khhhhhh aagh my head..." I groan as the entire world turns red.

The next thing I know, my head's resting on something soft... are those legs? But I didn't- OH CRAP!

I spring upright and turn to see who I was just laying on...

"You certainly recovered quickly," Lorelei says with a wide smile.
"Huh?" I stare at her for a few seconds. "What, you knew that I was going to faint?"
"Well yes," she nods. "It's called a Synapse, it's what happens when two people with Branches come within range of one another. The first time usually results in a fainting spell, which is what happened to you."

Huh? Branch? What's she talking about trees for?

"...what." I glare at her. "I get that I just fainted and all, but that's no reason to screw with me."
"What, I'm not playing around," she pouts. "My Branch is called 'Gardener,' and yours is..." she looks into my eyes. "Ooh, 'Song of Unison!' That's a fun one!"

Gardener? Song of Unison? What the hell?

"This isn't funny," I sigh. "I didn't tell you all that just so you could pull a practical joke on me."

How are you getting this from Lorelei? She's nice.

I've had people laugh in my face all day and call me deluded, it doesn't really feel right to do the same to her. So for now, I'll hear her out. Just for now.

"Okay," I say, "assuming that you're not full of crap, why don't you explain what this 'song of unison' thing is that you claim I have."
"I was just about to do that," Lorelei replies, pointing her finger in the air. "Song of Unison, 'That which brings harmony to all things,' gives the affected... that would be you," she points at me, "the ability to do all sorts of fun things with sound. The first thing you'll notice is that your hearing will become extremely sharp..."
"Sure," I say, rolling my eyes.
"...and once you get a hang of things, you'll be able to tell when people are lying by what their heartbeat sounds like, and abuse thins like harmonic resonance! I think that's a pretty good power for a hero, don't you?"

Pinwheel being a bad dude is just a best guess at this point based on circumstantial evidence and meta-awareness, he might not actually be a bad dude.

Accelerator isn't top-tier in his universe because Index powerlevels and abilities are all over the place and make little sense.

We have no reason to believe just yet that the same applies here. So until people start going backwards in time, then yes, that's a pretty strong ability

"Yyyyyeah!" I stammer. "Please!"

Oh man, now I bet she thinks I sound all eager...

"Well in that case I don't think I can refuse," Lorelei laughs. "I'll be sure to look for you again... my Synapse range is city-wide, so I don't think that'll be much of an issue for me as long as you don't move."
"I won't! I'll stay right here and get stronger and use the power you gave me to protect my Mom and everyone else in this city!"
"In that case, I look forward to your growth," Lorelei says as she leans over and kisses me on the forehead.

...a girl kissed me.

It was just on the forehead, but still. Kissed. ME!

Not to forget the whole superpowers deal of course, but that seems less important somehow. And while I'm processing all of this in my little boy mind, Lorelei gets up from the bench, waves goodbye to me, and disappears into the night.

I hope Cecile runs into Joshua at some point. They ought to get along pretty well, and they'd be exceedingly dangerous together.

Between Sound and Light control their opponents would only be able to trust their senses of smell, taste, and touch, not to even mention the myriad of offensive options available to both of them.

Looking at this never gets any easier. My Mom's hooked up to a bunch of respirators and IVs and machines that I don't even recognize, it's like something out of a sci-fi movie. I -could- just bust through the ceiling all DYNAMIC ENTRY-like, but that also runs the risk of breaking something that I don't want broken. I mean, I've pretty much figured out how to cancel shockwaves to my own person when falling from up high but I'd much rather not accidentally have the rubble fall and bash someone's skull in by accident.

I want to rough them up a bit, not kill them.

Yeah, it's probably best to treat this like a sneaking mission. Slide in, rough them up, slide out, and then call the cops so they can get hauled off. All in a day's work for the local hero.

After putting on my goggles, I send out an exploratory wave just in case. Looks like there's four of them down there. With that in mind, I head to a window and hop down a story, catching myself on the window ledge before pulling myself back inside... but I kind of botch my landing.

If he can stop any damage from occuring when falling from high up, doesn't that effectively make him immune to kinetic attacks in general?

Alright, Joshua... there's no room for error now that you're on the same floor as them. Gotta play this smart, I haven't mastered that trick with the bullets yet and a live situation like this sure as hell isn't when I want to test it out.

Four guys in the room, two entrances. They're all over by the northeast corner, so I should take the north entrance to limit the amount of time they actually know I'm there.

I think that's how Snake would do it, anyways.

Carefully, I hug the walls while creeping along on my chosen route of entry, tapping to confirm their position every few seconds. These assholes haven't attacked anyone with guns, but I'm not about to take that chance.

First wall...

Second wall...

...and here we are at the final corner. It's showtime.

>Like, if someone tries to hit him with a car, can't he just cancel any of the shockwaves that would damage him in the process?

And that's merely a single level application he could use his power for.

Waves are everything, everything that moves can be classified as a wave. That's why people earlier were saying that he was really bullshit powerful.

with proper training he could control forces without having to be near them. As in use his waves to make waves that propagate into other types of waveforms.

And that's only one level of wave transitions. From him -> propagation medium -> target. He could cause people to explode through walls if he gets good enough at it by going from him -> medium -> wall -> medium -> target.

And that's just counting what he can do with forces, light AND electricity moves as a wave. So not only does he have the physical powers, he has powers over light and electricity as well.

He's Cecile, accelerator, and misaka all in one if he trains himself properly. Though I doubt being a vigilante is training yourself properly and he only knows how to do the one thing, maybe not even do it very well either.
But even with meager training, he would be a monster to seriously fight.
>>
>>33622173
I'd say it's that he hasn't mastered canceling the kinetic energy from bullets, meaning he isn't bulletproof yet.
>>
>>33622155
A sneak attack would only work if the person who did it wasn't a branch. A second a branch gets near him, he would know.

Furthermore, any kind of physical sneak attack would be vulnerable to his wave ability. So it would have to be a branch that can strike outside his synapse range AND do it using a non-physical mean such as a psychic attack.
>>
>>33622187
I feel like he's at least restricted to sound waves, or at least more physical ones.. Light is clearly a separate branch, as is electricity most likely.

Still not someone to piss off though.

>>33622187
I know it's inevitable, but I really hate how nerds have to gush over every power like this. I'm glad we're over that phase with CC.

I think that's probably a given, although heat itself is a scalar, the transfer of heat could be considered a wave.

At the same time, that would require fine-tuning that I'm not sure he could do by himself. It would require an entire research time to master that.

>>33622278
>if he trains himself properly. Though I doubt being a vigilante is training yourself properly and he only knows how to do the one thing, maybe not even do it very well either.

Accelerator had training from a bunch of scientists who knew his power. This guy had trial and error. He'd be in Accelerator's position if he had trained himself properly because that power is ridiculously good.
>>

>>
>>33622292
>Just a reminded that Accel can manipulate heat.

Okay? I don't see how that has to do with the conversation we were having.
>>
>>33622267
Literally any power that generates any sort of anything can create heat.

Doritos guy could start fires using the friction of millions of tiny triangles.

That doesn't mean it's a reasonable use of his power, nor something to consider.

Honestly, you guys need to stop thinking that having a single power = control and mastery over all things. Yes, physics has rules and those rules interact with each other all the time. No, the man with magic powers over sound doesn't somehow get to control magnetism as well just because both of them involve motion.
>>
>>33622206
So Cecile, once she has some practice, would be pretty much perfect for the task, aside from her not being the kind of person who'd assassinate someone from miles away.

With a good vantage point Cecile can acquire a target from a fair distance and laser them with the sun, aside from any potential instantaneous attacks from unknown Branches it's as fast an attack as you can get and plenty destructive.

Accelerator controls vectors, he controls waves. He's shit with his power because he's self-trained, but accelerator has been trained since a child, so he's naturally better.

It just sounds like you want to get into an internet fight about imaginary people.
>>
>>33622371
Yeah, that 'canon' was kind of stupid, though. And had nothing at all to do with the physical side of his powers and veered into magic bullshit pretty hard. Accelerator doesn't even control vectors in that part, he just controls everything in his AIM field.

Later they just had to keep giving him buffs because that was the only way to stay relevant in the power creep. Hence my addendum that we were talking LV5 accelerator.

Alright, I got this. One of the thugs is right... THERE!

In a flash, I reach into the room and pull out the closest thug I can get my hands on, a frail-looking piece of garbage with a mohawk.

CRACK

SNAP

Two hits shatter most of the bones in his left arm and leg, and a final kick sends him well out of the way. Just as planned.

"Hey, what happened to Mike?" a thug asks.
"I dunno," another one replies. "He was just standing right- THE FUCK!?" he shouts as I charge him and take him down with a punch to the side."
"H- holy shit, who the fuck're you!?" the two remaining thugs shout as they quickly backs away from me and ready a knife and pair of brass knuckles respectively.

"It's come to my attention that you guys have been robbing people around here, and it's kind of my thing to stop stuff like that," I say, cracking my knuckles.
"What, so you're saying that you're a cop!?" a thug says as he cowers behind his friend.
"Nope, just a friendly neighborhood hero," I say, crossing my arms. "If you give up quietly, I'll go easy on you and spare you from the bone breaker's harmony and just call the cops on you instead. how about it?"
"...the what?"

Since I clearly need to show an example, I reach out and tap the wall to my right a few times with my knuckles until a noticeable crack forms in it.

"Basically, I do that," I say, pointing to the wall, "to your bones. It won't kill you but it -will- put you in the hospital for a good long while."

Aaand they're frozen with fear.

"...hey, didn't they find that one guy who turned out to be a serial rapist a few months back with like, a crazy number of broken bones?" one of the thugs asks the other.
"Ah, so you're familiar with my work!" I say, clapping my hands together.

That wasn't a fun one... there was a LONG string of rapes going on where the victims couldn't even remember what happened to them. After some investigating on my part, I found that it was a Branch-holder with some kind of weird paralysis power... fortunately, I didn't have to figure out a way to beat it because he ended up knocked out from his initial Synapse.

...and then I kind of lost it and wailed on him before finally calling the cops on him. Not my best day, though the sick fuck definitely deserved it.

"So how about it?" I ask. "You gonna give up?"
"Y... you saw what he did to that wall, man!" one thug says, trembling. "I don't want to end up crippled or anything!"
"It's probably just some trick!" the other shouts. "He's just some kinda Bruce Lee type or summat! I bet Billy could kick his ass right good!"

And then he bolts for the door.

...yeah, best to play it safe. Besides, I can always track down the straggler later.

"Shit, I shoulda ran too," the remaining thug groans as I pull out a set of handcuffs and secure him to a post.
"Nope, you made the right decision," I reply. "You might have been caught, but now you don't have to worry about me busting your kneecaps or anything," I say.

After making sure that the purses they snatched are still here (a really stupid move on their part) in order to make sure that the cops actually have something to book these guys on, I pull out the cheap cellphone that I keep for just such an occasion and call the cops.

While one guy did get away, I think I this counts for a decent day's work. Now to head to the hospital to check on Mom.

That accident really did a number on her... though she's not in a coma or anything, my Mom's had nothing but a long string of medical disasters ever since. But she's alive, and I guess that's what counts.

Waving hello to the usual nurses, I make my way down the familiar hallway to my mother's room... crap, I should've brought some flowers or something.

"Hi, my little joshybaby!" my Mom says as I enter the room. Her voice is as hoarse as usual, but she's sounding pretty energetic so I guess that's good.

My Mom remembers seeing the same thing as I did, what with that guy coming out of nowhere and punching our car... so to keep her from feeling like she was going nuts, I told her about Branches and all that. Maybe not my best move, but what's done is done.

...she's my mother, and I've always been up-front with her in the past so I guess I should tell her.

"I'm supposed to meet Lorelei in the park tonight," I say. "She's in town and wanted to talk to me so..."
"Well well well!" Mom laughs as best she can before she become short of breath. "Why don't you bring her over to visit me, there's a ton of things that I'd like to say to little miss gardener girl for getting my son involved in such dangerous business."
"NO."

There's no way I'd bring Lorelei to meet her, that'd only serve to aggravate my mother when she inevitably tells her off... not to mention that I don't want to risk Lorelei giving my mother a Branch. Something like that would only turn her into a target since she's stuck in the hospital.

"Well if you're not planning on bringing your girlfriend here to face her crimes of child endangerment, what -do- you plan on doing with her?" Mom asks. "You've had a crush on her for like four years now, are you finally going to tell her?"
"I don't know," I mumble, "we'll probably just sit and talk about random stuff like we usually do when she's in town."

I don't even want to ask why she doesn't have any issue with her underaged son having late-night park meet-ups with a lady who's an indeterminate number of years older than her son.

"Well in any event, you be on your best behavior, you got it?" Mom says in a stern tone. "I don't want to hear about any potential grandchildren until after you've graduated from highschool at the VERY earliest, I raised you better than that."

It's at times like this that I wish my hearing wasn't supernaturally good.

>[2/?]
>>
>>33623348

After my mother's gotten her fill of nagging, we go on about more pleasant topics of conversation. What I'm doing at school, what kinds of TV shows she's been watching while cooped up here in the hospital, what we plan on doing whenever the hell she finally released from this place... and before I know it, visiting hours have ended.

"You better get going," Mom says, pushing me along. "You know better than to keep a lady waiting!"
"Yeah, yeah," I sigh. Seriously, I have no idea what she even wants me to do when it comes to Lorelei.

Then again, I don't really know what -I- want me to do when it comes to her.

After giving my mother a kiss goodbye, I make a hasty retreat from the hospital and its cacophony of monitors and bone saws and all those horrible things and head straight to the park. It's just like that night that we first met, with clear skies and a massive full moon...

...and then I see her, standing there in the moonlight.

Lorelei.

"Good evening, Joshua!" Lorelei calls out as she waves me over. "It's a lovely night, isn't it?"
"Yeah, it is," I say with a nervous smile as I walk over to her. "Umm... so how have things been with you since the last time you were around?"
"Interesting," she shrugs. "Kind of busy, though... speaking of which, I have some news for you."
"Huh?"

News? What kind of news? Did she find out where that guy who hurt my mother is? Is she going to be staying in this city for good?

"Well you see..." Lorelei says, adjusting her hat, "there're some books circulating around at the moment, 'The Book of the Gardener,'"
"You wrote a book?" I ask.
"Oh no," she shakes her head, "I have nothing to do with this."
"But you said 'Gardener,' and isn't that your Branch?"
"And that's the main point of what I wanted to tell you," she replies. "These books have the same power to impart Seeds as I do," she sighs, "and one of them has been shipped to someone in this city."

>[4/?]
>>
>>33623429
She's finally showing her responsible side!

If she managed to figure that out, I wonder if she's working with Tree of Life after all? Irene did say they wanted to books to avoid having to rely on Gardeners. Lorelei is not someone I'd want to rely on either.

Wait, so that means that someone here has a book that can just-

"...oh crap," I gasp.
"I figured that I should tell you as soon as possible," Lorelei replies. "Branch activity in this city's sure to increase soon, along with organizations who are after the books."
"Evil people who want a superpowered army, I bet," I reply.
"That's a potential risk, yes," she nods. "It's also why I need to get out of here soon. Thanks to my Branch, I'm seen as every bit as valuable as one of those books, if not more so."
"Well of course YOU'RE valuable," I say, taking Lorelei's hand. "But if anyone tries anything, I'll-"
"No, I didn't come here to ask you to serve as my bodyguard," she says, shaking her head. "Just to warn you about what's coming, that's all."

God damn it, and just when I thought I'd have the chance to- no, now isn't the time for that.

"Don't worry," I say. I'll find whoever has the book and get rid of it before it can fall into the wrong hands. That's what a hero would do, right?"
"I suppose so," she laughs. "But while you may have an experience advantage over whoever gains a Branch by reading the book, you should still be careful, okay? Watch out for the new Branch users, and also the people who were sent to weed them out."
"Got it," I nod.
"Especially the Tree of Life," Lorelei says. "They and I have a lot of bad blood between us... it's best that you not mention my name to anyone you meet who's with them."

The Tree of Life, huh... I'd expect something more along the lines of "Yggdrasil" for the name of an evil organization.

There was the serial rapist mentioned in thsi thread, his Branch let him void a target's perception of reality for a duration of time proportionate to how long they made physical contact with him. One second touched means ten seconds of stolen time, etc. He got really lucky there.

As far as full fights go, he went up against someone who had full control of all plant life around him. Almost died through suffocation, and had to resort to destroying the ground underneath them in order to secure a win.
