The vision of the eye fades slowly, its fogged pupil seeming to stare through you until the last wisp of color have vanished. You find yourself once more thrust into the land of the living, into the small bunk room you shared with Profectus. The nest of rotten wood and dirty rags you'd built for the egg have burned down to their last embers and your companion snores loudly from the top bunk, sound asleep still. You don't have any way to properly judge how much time has passed, there are no windows in this room nor are there clocks.
>Vys Pool: (28/28)

You push yourself up laboriously, joints popping loudly as you right yourself and stretch the stiffness from your limbs. Your thoughts are muddled and indistinct, a jumble of knowledge forcefully inserted into your mind by a yet unborn dragon and your own thoughts, instincts, and feelings. Pain throbs at the back of your skull and the world spins while you struggle to get your bearings, but eventually the headache subsides and your mind is your own again. At least for the most part.

Gingerly, you touch the surface the egg. Finding that it's not scorching hot you crouch down and lift the egg from the ground with some difficulty, plopping it down on the bottom bunk so that you can stomp out the last few hot coals that remain of your make-shift nest. That done you see to rousing Profectus. He's sleeping quite heavily, but once you've jerked that weird mask with the long trunk off of his face and given him a few rough shakes he stirs.

He waves you off and rolls over onto his side. “Wha'dya want? Tryin' to-” He yawns, mumbling something incomprehensible. You punch him in the shoulder to prevent him dosing off again. “Get up, Prof. Long day ahead. Monsters to fight, artifacts to discover, crises to create.” He grumbles something under his breath, but relents and rolls off the bunk. “Fine, lets get on with it then. Sooner we get to the city, sooner we're out of these tunnels.”

You push open the door and peer out into the hallway beyond. Sunlight shines down through the large barred skylight, and you see Chrys and Darzi on the floor below chatting lightly about something or other while Darzi uses a bit of magic to heat the brown slop you assume is breakfast. Profectus quickly moves towards the stairs to join the two women below.

Skull Kid and Fulvia are nowhere to be seen, probably still in their room. The only sounds besides the quiet echo of your friend's voices from below are the rustle of leaves and the chirping of birds from outside. Overall, the scene is peaceful.

>Explore the area to see if you can't find the other exit.
>Grab a bowl of stew with Chrys, Darzi, and Profectus.

>>
You stalk off down the hallway, peeking into bedrooms until you find the one occupied by Fulvia and Skull Kid. It doesn't take long. You find Skull Kid asleep and Fulvia standing a few feet away, watching him vigilantly. You find the scene disconcerting, it reminds you of that night you spent in the quarters of the Dux in the first Rhynian ruin you explored. Does she always watch people sleep? She turns to face you as the door opens and the human facade she projects smiles. “Good morning. I will rouse Skull Kid and we will join you on the floor below in a moment. I took the liberty of exploring the compound during the night and discovered a doorway blocked by rubble. It should take little effort to clear.”

Well, she's certainly saved you quite a lot of trouble. “Well, guess you've done all my work for me then.” You duck out of the room while she moves to wake Skull Kid. Bereft of any productive task to see to, you make your way down the steps to the floor below, and the camp fire where your friends are gathered. Darzi seems to be regaling them with tales of your homeland. “-then he's all 'Noo, it was an accident'. There I was wondering how one 'accidentally' blows up a water tower and floods the entertainment quarter.”

You sit down adjacent the fire and fix yourself a bowl of stew. “What are you three talking about? Blowing up water towers?” Darzi waves a hand dismissively. “No, apprentice mages and the various issues they've caused the watch. The kid was fourteen, he shouldn't of even been in the entertainment quarter. Let alone showing off to try and intimidate a guard into letting him into a house of whores.” Profectus wryly comments. “Sounds like something I would've done.”

A short while later Fulvia and Skull Kid join you, the latter looking somewhat haggard. The wires stuffed through his eye sockets were unsettling at first but you've started to get used to them, you're at least able to ignore them now. Once everyone finishes eating he flips down his visor and claps his hands together. “Right then, off to adventure?”

> Perhaps if you'd learned this sooner, the situation at the bar wouldn't have gone so terribly. You might have been able to avoid losing control of the flames when Pipsqueak spilled her drink on the table.
>>
Fulvia leads your party to the pile of rubble that blocks off the doorway further into the tunnels. However, upon arriving you find not a collapsed section of the wall or the ceiling as you'd expect, but rather a hastily constructed barricade. Its main component is a large metal table tipped on its side and pressed flush to the doorway, while chairs and various other furniture are stacked up behind it to further reinforce the doorway. Perhaps the most disconcerting thing about the scene before you is the large holes punched through the door itself, roughly the size of a man's arm, except no man should be strong enough to punch through a metal door this thick unaided.

You get closer, to get a peek through one of the holes punched through the door and see if anything is lurking on the other side. You don't see anything but it's awfully gloomy on the other side, and you do see various claw marks in the floor and on the walls. You also note several large brown stains that you assume are dried blood. A battle occurred here, though it must have been some time ago.

Just to be on the safe side you channel water magic into the control panel of your armor and the world seems to fade away to naught but the flowing rivers of vys above you, a narrow tendril splitting off and filtering into the generator on Fulvia's back. At the very least there doesn't seem to be anything magical on the other side of the door. Cutting the flow of vys to your armor and extracting your nature staff from your cloak, you once more scan the area. This time with the glowing green light that detects living material. The world above is a bright field of green, the grass and trees glowing brightly. Below there are only a few bright points of light, fungi or plant growth you'd assume. Perhaps worms tunneling through the earth and other such pest.
>>
You tuck the staff back into your cloak and nod your head. “Seems to be all clear. Go ahead and clear away the barricade.” Chrys nods, and with only a little help from Fulvia's metal magic pushes away the table blocking the door and all the furniture behind it as well. You pull the door open with only a little difficulty, the hinges complaining loudly as you do so. All six of you set off into the gloomy tunnel, this one lit only rarely by the glow of one of those strange light-tubes.

A few hours into your march the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end, and you get the distinct sensation of being watched. Glancing over your shoulder reveals nothing but your party following behind. You try to ignore it but over the next hour or so the sensation continues to intensify, until you can't help but feel paranoid and jumpy. Just as you think you might snap you come to a crossroads. Lucky's directions come to mind unbidden. There will be three crossroads and you're supposed to take a left at each one. However, the left tunnel is mostly blocked, only a narrow hole has been burrowed through the rubble of a ceiling collapse and it's covered with cobwebs. The right tunnel on the other hand proceeds in more or less a straight line, clear and empty.

You decide to trust Lucky, though you do take out your spear and stab it into the tunnel a few times, just to make sure there isn't anything large and venomous waiting for you on the other end. It also serves to clear out some of the cobwebs blanketing the entrance. Once you're satisfied that there are no giant spiders you tuck your spear away and begin to crawl into the hole. You hear Profectus complain from behind you. “Do we have to go through the creepy hole?” To which Chrys responds simply. “Yes.”

You crawl on you belly for a short while before emerging on the other end. You find yourself immersed in pitch black. It's so dark you can barely see the hand in front of your face. Chrys is the next to exit the tunnel, followed by Profectus, Fulvia, and Darzi. Skull Kid is the last to emerge. Once everyone is through the hole you speak. “It looks like we're just going to need to keep our hands to the wall on our left and follow it. We ought to reach our destination eventually.” Suddenly light floods into the hallway, blinding you momentarily. When your vision returns you see that a small lens on Skull Kid's mask has lit up bright enough to turn night to day in front of him. “Nah, it's cool. I got this. I'll lead the way while you guys follow, yeah?”

You nod your assent and the party sets off, trailing behind S.K. The sensation of being watched hasn't disappeared entirely, though it has lessened. As the party walks Chrys falls into step beside you and quietly ask in your native tongue. “Do you feel that?” You glance her way and shrug your shoulders. “The sensation of being watched? Yeah. Ever since we left the rest area.” She nods brusquely. “I am glad I am not the only one. I was beginning to worry. Do you believe it may be a creature similar to the one we faced on the lift?” You shake your head. “I don't think so, though I'm not ruling it out. I've just been assuming it's paranoia on my part.” Darzi, apparently eavesdropping on your conversation, chimes in. “I don't feel a thing. A little unsettled what with it being pitch black and all, but other than that nothing.”

You resolve to ignore it, though the surroundings do little to assuage your fears. Dark, cramped, featureless tunnels that seem to go on forever. After an hour or so of walking you think you begin to hear skittering in the pipes and from the walls, but whenever you focus on the noise it vanishes. You find yourself almost begging to encounter something, just to put your mind at rest that this isn't just your paranoia. Your wish is, unfortunately, granted.

You're following Skull Kid through the darkened halls, distracted by your musings regarding what sort of monstrosity might be following along behind you. There is a sharp turn ahead, almost ninety degrees. Before you quite realize what's going on a giant, monstrous fist has slammed into Skull Kid's mask. The light flickers, and you hear something stomping around the corner towards you. You catch a glimpse of a twisted face, a double chin, a head vanished into grotesquely muscular shoulders. Then the light goes out.
(2/3, I lied.)

It's pitch black, and the last you saw of the creature it was charging towards you. You were only a few feet behind Skull Kid, so you'll probably be its first target. You can hear it breathing, and it seems to take a heavy step towards you, but you still don't have a very good idea of where it might be.

You brace yourself, channeling a burst of metal magic into your armor. Plates seem to sprout and grow from nowhere, encasing you in a sturdy cocoon of metal. As the mutant's fist makes contact your head is snapped back and pain shoots through your head and neck. The world swims and spots cloud your vision but the impact itself didn't hurt you, you don't think so at least. Certainly nothing is broken. You quickly grab hold of the creature's extended arm and channel a paralysis spell into it, the cold creeping up your forearm only briefly before you discharge the spell.

You're not sure if it's just because of the relative lack of vys on this world or if the mutant is naturally more susceptible to paralysis, but your spell seems incredibly effective. Immediately the creature's joints lock up and you find it falling forward, onto you unfortunately. Fortunately Chrys catches it before it can topple on top of you and pushes it over onto its side. You rub your neck, dropping the flow of vys to your armor and letting the metal plates retract. A pulled muscle and a concussion, you think. A simple fix with your magic.

You're left in the pitch black, Skull Kid sprawled out on one side and the creature locked up like some sort of horrible statue on your other. Chrys looks at you worriedly for a moment but seems to decide you'll be fine and so instead turns her attention towards the creature, crouching down to get a better look at it.

You address Darzi in your native tongue while crouching to inspect Skull Kid. “Scout ahead to ensure there aren't more of these things waiting for us, use fire magic to illuminate the way ahead. It shouldn't be too taxing at your level.” She nods and a tiny ball of flame appears in front of Darzi's outstretched hand to illuminate the hall, dimmer than the light that Skull Kid's helmet had produced. The light vanishes as she proceeds around the bend to scout ahead so you're forced to create your own little ball of flame to inspect Skull Kid; at your level the vys drain is barely noticable.

Several of the tiny screens on Skull Kid's helmet have been cracked or broken, and there is a large fist-shaped dent in the center of his helmet. He's still alive, that much is clear, but he's suffering an ungodly concussion. It's a simple fix for you, but you doubt he'll wake up immediately afterwards. It will probably take him a few minutes at least, maybe up to an hour. You do what repairs are necessary and then address Chrys. “You'll have to carry Skull Kid, he's not going to wake up for a while yet.” She nods, and abandons her inspection of the mutant that attacked you in favor of scooping up the unconscious cyborg.

You take her place, crouching down next to your paralyzed attacker. He, and it is indeed a he, has beady little eyes dominated almost entirely by large black pupils. If you had to guess this thing is probably pretty old, the face is wrinkled and numerous scars cross the creature's body. He seems distended and warped by muscle, his head seemingly buried within one massive mound of the stuff. He's also larger than any human has a right to be, taller even than you. He must stand at least seven feet tall, though probably taller. He's naked, though that makes little difference. His genitalia are shriveled to the point that they can only be vestigial and the slabs of muscle this thing is composed of seem thick enough to stop a bullet.

Nope, it's a underground tunnel filled with mutants and he showed us a way that's "safe". It's more probable to just be a random mutant walking around and stumbling upon us.

You decide to leave the poor bastard be. Existence is probably punishment enough. You do take a moment to inspect it with your magic sight and your nature staff though. It lights up with the faintest hint of yellow to indicate corrupted vys when you look at it through your magic sight, but glows brightly when you cast the green light of your staff over it. That done, you stand up and wait a few minutes to give Darzi a proper head start before beginning to stalk off down the hallway after her; ball of flame hovering a few feet in front of you. You walk for nearly an hour before you get any sort of contact from Darzi. Finally she reaches out to you via the brooches you all wear. {I found a pair of big metal double doors. Think it might be another rest area. I hear movement from the other side of the door, and voices.} You respond briefly. {We'll be there shortly.}

It isn't but a few moments later that Skull Kid wakes up. He groans and shifts his weight, starting to struggle in Chrys' grasp. She lets him down, but his legs don't quite seem strong enough to support his weight just yet and he's forced to lean against a wall. “What happened? I can't see out of half my external cameras and my head is killing me.” You channel a touch of healing magic into him to fix any damage you might have missed before launching into an explanation. “We got ambushed by a mutant of some sort; seven feet tall, head encased in muscle.” Skull Kid nods wearily. “Elephant Man, pretty rare, since they're incapable of reproduction and only a certain small subset of the population was turned into them when the bombs dropped. They're known to wander these woods. Guess I took a punch?” You nod, and he grumbles something about how costly the repairs are going to be.
(1/2)

Not long after that you come upon Darzi waiting in front of two large metal doors with her arms crossed in front of her. There are indeed voices coming from the other side of the door, speaking the 'Interlingua' as they call it here, though you know it simply as Rhynian. They're quiet, and you can't properly make out what they're saying, but you'd guess there is a small group of five or so at the last. Comparable in size to your own party of adventurers. Darzi's voice intrudes upon your thoughts. {We ought to use the brooches to avoid detection. What are we going to do about this?}

Chrys is the first to respond. {I see no where to go but forward. This is the passage that Lucky indicated we ought to take and I do not know this area well enough to attempt bypassing this room.} Profectus speaks next. {We didn't encounter a thing until we took this passage, I say Lucky has lead us into a trap, we ought to turn back.} Fulvia declines comment, and Skull Kid doesn't have a brooch. He seems content to wait around while the five of you stare intently at one another though.

You withdraw your nature staff from your cloak and point it towards the metal double doors, channeling a touch of vys into it. Four figures are partially illuminated. One seems on odd sort of abstract jumble, bits and pieces missing including the top half of their head and the majority of their arms. It's still recognizably human though. You can't say as much for some of the others. One appears to be nothing but a torso, its head, arms, and legs gone. Another is missing only the bottom halves of its legs and its forearms, but is missing dots of flesh here and there. The least auged of all of them is still missing good portions of its body. You find it disconcerting.

You open the control panel on your forearm with a touch of your finger, the panel sliding back to reveal the lightly glowing screen behind. You select a symbol on your armor you know means 'Enhance' and then select the symbol vaguely shaped like an ear. You send a surge of vys into your armor's control panel and all at once the sounds around you seem to be amplified by several orders of magnitude. You can even faintly hear the sound of that mutant you paralyzed breathing far behind you, though it's probably not paralyzed any longer. By comparison picking out the voices on the other side of the door is a simple task.

“-eed to go north if we want to reach the city. We didn't trek through the forest and drop down into these godforsaken tunnels for nothing.” A woman's voice, young. Another voice responds. “Nah, I'm tellin' you we gotta go west. The city is to the west of the forest so if we go north we'll overshoot it.” A teenage boy, you think. An older woman, late 20s you'd suspect, responds. “Lil' B has the right of it. We head west we'll reach the city in a day or two.” Curiously one figure doesn't speak.

You cut the flow of vys to your armor and briefly relay what you've heard back to your companions. That done, you raise a gauntleted fist to the door and knock loudly three times, the sound of metal clanging against metal echoing down the long hallway and likely through the room on the other side as well. The conversation on the other side of the door ceases abruptly and there is a brief period of silence. You hear a shotgun being cocked on the other side of the door but rather than answering you with gunfire a woman's voice calls out from the other side of the door. “Who is it?”

You respond cheerily enough. “Fellow travelers, we seem to share a common destination.” You hear a brief, whispered conversation on the other side of the door. It seems rather heated, but eventually the voice responds. “Why should we let you in? How do we know you're not asphalt cowboys?” You look to Skull Kid with a questioning look and he chuckles. “Police officers, you know. Guards?” You shake your head slightly. “What's asphalt, and what on Earth is a cow-boy?” Skull Kid sighs, folding his arms in front of his chest. “Asphalt is a type of concrete they use to pave roads. A cowboy is a term coined a couple centuries back to refer to one who herds cattle.” You nod your head slowly, then turn your attention towards the door.

“I can safely guarantee you that we are not asphalt cowboys. I was never much for shepherd's work and I've never even seen asphalt.” Chrys quietly chimes in. “I was actually a rather good shepherd, would I qualify as a cowboy?” Skull Kid waves a hand dismissively. “Cowgirl, technically. Though that's taken on a somewhat racy context so I wouldn't go around proclaiming it loudly.” You ignore the conversation behind you as best you can and listen for the response from the other side. “Alright, we'll let you in. Cause any trouble though and we'll fill you full of anti-tank rounds.” You whisper quietly to Skull Kid. “They made a special round just for shooting tanks? What do they have against water storage?”

The door grinds open slowly and you're surprised to see not four figures on the other end, but five. They bring with them a large robot roughly the size of a grown man armed with four heavy tentacle appendages and an array of firepower. The woman you'd been speaking with is heavily armored, a mask covering her mouth with a small cloth screen below it. An array of small pins adorn the right breast of her armored environmental suit. Behind her stands a more-or-less featureless figure. Their head has been entirely replaced as best you can tell by a large metal construction, and they carry with them a sword. The other two stand further back, one of them a teenage boy with dark skin who seems to be more machine than man, wielding a automatic weapon far too large for him. The other is a slim younger woman, probably in her late teens, who's hardly armored at all. She also appears unarmed. Her legs below her knees and her arms below the elbows have been replaced by metal, and metal studs seem to poke out of her skin at regular intervals.

The woman who you'd been speaking with begins the introductions. “I'm Boss Lady, and this is Robutt.” She gestures towards the floating metal sphere behind her. “Next to me is Ronin, he doesn't talk much.” That would be the sword wielder. “Behind us are Lil' Bastard and Sneak.” She gestures to the teenage boy and the young woman in turn. Finally she waves to Skull Kid. “I recognize the old man, but who are you five?”

You transmit over the brooches. {Remember, using your real names is considered rude here. Better come up with something quick.} The party warned, you get on with your own introduction. “We're Magic Mik and The Gang.” You gesture elaborately to yourself. “I'm Magic Mik.” You motion towards the rest of your party absentmindedly. “And this is the gang.” That gets a snort out of Boss Lady, who presses forward. “Well do the members of the gang have names, or are they just some sort of gestalt consciousness occupying four different platforms?”

Profectus is the first to speak up. “Rocky, on account of the arm.” He sounds grudging, but doesn't whine. Fulvia is the next to speak, oddly enough. “Robitch.” You look at her confused, and she shrugs her shoulders. “It's what the soldiers used to call me when they thought I couldn't hear.” Chrys, after a brief moment of contemplation, chimes in as well. She simply states “Cowgirl”, which elicits a sigh from Skull Kid. Darzi is the last to speak, she seems to be having difficulty coming up with anything. “Wasp, people used to say I was mean as one.” She nods her head firmly, happy with her nickname evidently.

Boss Lady nods slowly, then steps aside to allow you entry. “You folk aren't from around here, are you?” You shake your head, grinning. “Not even remotely, what gave it away?” She shrugs. “The clothing, mostly. Looks like damned Renaissance armor or something. Why are you heading for the city anyway?” You step past her, into the rest area. It looks much the same as the one you slept in last night. “You first, why are you going to the city?” Your attention is drawn to a sheet of paper on the floor. It's old and yellowing, but the writing on top of it reads 'Escape Tunnels' and it seems to be a map. A map would be incredibly useful for navigating these tunnels going forward.

Boss Lady sighs irritably. “I asked first, but I'll bite. We're smugglers,-” The young woman, Sneak, cuts in. “Entrepreneurs! Don't go freely associating us with those bums.” Boss Lady ignores her. “-our old route got sealed off by the asphalt cowboys so we decided to try this one. It was supposed to be a secret, who tipped you off about it?”

“I have my sources, let's leave it at that.” Boss Lady rolls her eyes. “If you say so, champ. A blabber mouth is good for nobody though, you ought to teach those sources of yours the value of keeping their mouths shut. Anyway, your turn. Why are you headed for the city?” You shrug your shoulders. “There is an artifact we want, it's supposed to be somewhere in the Undercity. Selling ourselves into slavery just for a brief jaunt through the sewers was not a particularly attractive prospect and so here we are.”

Boss Lady nods, walking with you towards the map in the center of the room. You note several ropes dangling from the skylight in this rest stop. Most of the bars that had kept the skylight closed lay in a rusted jumble around the floor, so it probably wasn't particularly difficult to get in. There is also a collection of miscellaneous gear and several large bags arrayed next to the map, four of them being used to pin the corners of the map down. Boss Lady crouches down next to the map and sighs, gesturing to it. “I don't suppose your sources told you how to get to the City, did they? We've been arguing about which direction we ought to take. There is an exit to our north, but there is another to our west. The west exit is barred from the other side but I'm convinced going north will get us nowhere.”

>Tell them your 'sources' told you to keep going left at every intersection. Have Chrys bust the western door open.

“My sources told me to go left at every intersection, but let me take a look at that map.” You crouch down next to her. She points to a small square a couple inches away from the dot labeled 'Urban Center 43B'. “This is where we are, about a day outside the city.” She traces her finger along the left path, which drifts towards the city. The next intersection has a branch protruding out from the right, and continuing on the left path would indeed get you to the City. The North path loops and winds and twist, one branch going off towards 'Urban Center 43A' and another eventually linking with the opposite side of the City.

“Looks about right then. Chr-I mean, Cowgirl, could you get the door?” Right, no real names. That's going to take some getting used to. She nods her head brusquely and marches off through the rest area towards the door. She jimmies the handle briefly and then forcefully puts her shoulder into the door. You hear metal grinding against metal. Chryssa grunts, and a short while later something snaps loudly. The door slams open, the sound of it hitting the concrete wall echoing through the chamber. You nod. “Door's open. Onwards, to adventure!” Sneak comments. “Damn, those are some high quality strength augs. I wouldn't have thought she'd had any work done.” You nod, not really understanding. “That's whatever you're talking about for you.” You remark dismissively on your way to the door.

You stop in your tracks when you see what lies in wait for you on the other side. An entire herd of what might have once been pigs, their heads split apart to reveal monstrous jaws. Their bodies warped and twisted. They seem to snarl at you in unison and before Chrys can shut the door the first swine is already though, charging forward on stubby legs to put an end to you.

You could probably set up some sort of trap that would have that effect, but if you just whipped off your cloak and put it in front of you bull-fighter style they'd brush past. There is some resistance to living objects entering the cloak after all, and anything Ricky doesn't want in there has a hard time getting in.
