Previously, on Avatar Quest.....

When your father departed to deliver a report to the Queen in the capital, he left you, your mother, and Sena in charge. Things quickly went south when bandits attacked the very next day. After some fierce fighting, you were all captured, but Felna managed to escape, kill several bandits, and make the others flee. Knowing that they would return, and in greater numbers, you and the others constructed a sand fortress on the beach and prepared for battle. When the attack came, traps managed to hold the majority of your foes at bay, but a pair of Airbenders made it inside, wreaking havoc before being killed. You informed their leader, Ming, of the fate his Airbenders suffered. Ming challenged you to a duel, and the two of you fiercely battles against one another. Slowly but surely, you managed to bring Ming down, and he eventually died of a combination of injuries and exhaustion. Over the next several weeks, everyone trained and worked on the fortress, but did not go far due to fear of any remaining bandits. Your father returned from the capital with more settlers and two of the Queen's elite guard, who said that the Queen desired to meet you. After saying goodbye to everyone you cared enough to say goodbye to, you travelled with the guards to the capital, and were escorted to the palace. The Queen was very happy to meet you, and explained that she called you in order to verify your father's stories about you. You proved your Earthbending prowess by defeating one of her guards in a dueling ring. You then returned to the throne room with the Queen, where you are now discussing what exactly your father said about you.

>Welcome to Avatar Quest. Here are the rules.

Decisions are made by vote. Each vote has a ten minute interval, after which, the option that receives the most votes it the one that is chosen.

There are no write-ins unless explicitly stated

Some options require rolls. In that event, rolls will be out of 100. Whether rolls succeed or fail is decided by the first three rolls. If one passes, then you succeed regardless of the other two. Rolls will really only occur during training, or when trying something new.
All decisions are final. If you regret voting for something, too bad. Think carefully before you make decisions.

Try to keep waifu bullshit to a minimum.

"What do you mean by "everything he told you"?" you ask curiously.

She takes another sip of her water. "For right now, that's not important. But, you know, I am curious. A lot of the accomplishments your father spoke of, he wasn't there for. But, you yourself said that they did happen, although you did have some help. I'm very interested in hearing your accounts of those events and how they happened."

Setting down her drink, she grins. "I imagine you and I have quite a bit to discuss."

"What do you want to know?" you ask her politely.

She puts a finger to her chin and thinks it over for a moment. "Well, I suppose one thing I'm curious about is your Earthbending abilities. You've displayed incredible skill and knowledge of advanced techniques, and seem to be able to perform them with relative ease. Now, both of your parents are strong Earthbenders, but it appears that your Earthbending may even surpass theirs. How exactly did you attain such mastery?"

The Queen nods. "I see. Well, imagination and persistence are both very admirable qualities, and you seem to possess more than a fair bit of both. And while I'm sure your parents did help, you shouldn't be afraid to accept credit for your own accomplishments. Your parents helped you master the basics of bending, but the techniques you learned afterwards, you developed on your own. You should be proud of yourself, but not too proud." She smiles. "After all, I really do admire your modesty."

She chuckles. "Yes, you do seem to have survived the encounter unscathed."

"The circumstances for her actions were understandable," you explain.

Between that and the sparring, though, I can imagine that the two of you returned to the others in states that gave your brother plenty to joke about and the girl plenty to be suspicious about. "I'd like to see my room," you tell her.

"Of course, follow me," she tells you, making her way to the doors.

You get up and follow, walking beside her down the hall and to the stairway. This time, when you go down, you stop on the second floor, where the Queen leads you down to another nearby hallway. At the end is a single door, which she opens for you, gesturing inside.

Stepping through the threshold, you see that it is a simple yet nice room with a decent sized bed, a table, a chamber pot, and some paintings on the walls.

"This is your room," the Queen confirms. "I will have servants tidy it for you daily. When you're not sleeping, feel free to go where you like within the palace. You can go train with the guards, come visit me in the throne room, go to the kitchen and ask someone to prepare you a meal; you have the run of the palace. I only ask that you don't leave for the time being."

Pretty sure our father already told her. Besides, I think we can talk our way out of any anger on her part. We just play up our fears about being the Avatar. When one Avatar dies the next is born. But we're only sixteen and the last one died thirty-two years ago. Which means there was another Avatar that no one knows about that died when they were no older than we are. We're not trying to hide it forever, we're just scared. We wanted to make sure that we had learned enough to defend our self before we let anyone outside our family know. It's not that we don't trust the Queen. But she'd want us to aid her, and that would mean making enemies. Enemies we aren't strong enough to face yet.

"It showed a man surrounded by Earth, Wind, Water and Fire," you answer.

Her eyes develop a knowing glint to them as she grins. "That is one of my favorites. I suppose you want to know who that man is?"

"Yes, I do," you tell her.

"His name was Wan, and he was the first Avatar," she explains. "He was the first human to master all four of the elements, and who lead us to a new age. Before him, mankind lived on the backs of colossal creatures called Lion Turtles. The rest of the world was ruled by spirits, and man only left the safety of the Lion Turtles out of necessity. But Wan defeated the most powerful of the dark spirits, Vaatu, and sent the others back to their own world. With the spirits gone, man left the Lion Turtles, free to carve out their own lives in the vast world they had been terrified of for so long. And, here we are now, living in mighty kingdoms and great cities, all thanks to Wan. That painting is, of course, of him bending all of the elements."

Honestly, I found the "spirits vanish back to their own world" thing kind of confusing. We see throughout the first series that while they're nowhere near as common as in Wan's time the spirits do still interact with humanity. Hei Bei, the Spirit Oasis of the north, Tui and La taking physical form, Koh stealing the face of Kurruk's wife, the illusions of the Foggy Swamp, Wan Shi Tong and his knowledge seekers, the Painted Lady guarding her river...there are plenty of examples. There's even more spirits in the physical world if we count the ones from the comics like the Mother of Faces or Old General Iron. So do the spirits just sneak back out sometime between Wan's era and Aang's?

"Why is it your favorite, exactly?" you ask.

"Mostly because of how much I admire the man himself," she answers. "Thanks to him, mankind went from being scattered, few, and frightened of the world around them to where we are now. We left the safety of the Lion Turtles and saw the world. We saw, we learned, we built. Wan helped humanity as a whole become something greater than what it once was. And, I also think there is something to be said about where he came from. He wasn't any sort of ruler, he was just a regular person who went on to do remarkable things. He's proof that anybody can aspire to greatness. And, I also respect the fact that becoming the Avatar didn't change who he was. Despite having all of that power, he spent the remainder of his life helping others."

"I've always wondered how he mastered all four elements," you admit.

"He did not do so alone," she informs you. "He had help from a spirit named Raava. The two of them worked together, and eventually became one."

"Because we still have some things to discuss, and I'd rather know where you are when it's time to discuss them," she tells you simply. "You shouldn't be confined here for more than a few days."

Not able to think of anything else to do, you decide to get a good night's sleep. You climb into your bed and cover yourself, feeling extremely comfortable. It doesn't take long for you to slip into the warm embrace of sleep.

"Really? You didn't know who Wan was?"

Opening your eyes, you find yourself in a forest, sitting in front of a large lake. However, this one is clearly different from the lake you and Felna found. Searching for the source of the voice, you see angry young man from one of your previous dreams. He still doesn't look too happy. He isn't Wan, you can tell that much by his age and hair color, but you honestly have no idea who he is.

Save it for after we learn his identity. After we figure out he's the previous Avatar we can argue that he's just jealous of us for not being so shitty. We survived getting our throat cut, why can't he? And actually, now that I think about it, didn't he fight a shark-turtle too? Except he just ran from it in the end, we tamed ours. We are superior to Avatar #3 in every way. He has no grounds to criticize us on.

"Funny, I guessed that was your name when I saw you mouthing off to the angry girl with a dagger to your throat," he replies.

"You look like you're from the Southern Kingdom," you say, changing the subject. "How did you forget, anyway? Has it just been that long since anyone used it?"

"Partly," he admits. "Even my parents didn't use it very often. They called me "son" or "sweetheart" or yadda yadda."

"Well never mind that," you say. "Why did you bring me here?"

He chuckles uncomfortable and rubs the back of his head. "Well, the truth is, I've been trying to contact you for weeks. I came close once, but this is the first time I actually succeeded. Turns out I'm not very good at this "spiritual advisor" thing. Who woulda thought?"

Our mother had been murdered. We found a knife on her that matched the ones used by a bandit we had fought earlier. We went to confront her about it. For some reason, people voted for us to get increasingly belligerent with her despite her actually pretty reasonable argument that plenty of people had knives like that and that she had no reason to kill our mother. So we wound up fighting her, and this time she won. Then she slit our throat, because she's not going to let a threat just walk away.

"What's a spiritual advisor?" you ask.

"Basically, your spiritual advisor is supposed to help guide you in your life as the Avatar," he explains. "Help you understand what you are, how your powers work, and so on."

"What about the other two Avatars?" you ask him. "Couldn't you ask them for help? Or does only the most recent one get to stick around?"

"The most recent one apparently has the most direct connection to you," he says. "Think of it like links in a chain; I'm the link before you, and you'll be the link before the next Avatar. The other Avatars can contact you, but it's somewhat difficult for them. I don't see Wan very often, and I'm doubting Gonyo has tried contacting you, yet. He wasn't very pleased with the Avatar he was stuck advising, so I don't think he's jumping at the opportunity to deal with another one."

Gonyo is clearly the second Avatar, we can infer that from context. Let's not say anything that gives the Third a chance to mock us fore being stupid any more.

He removes his hand from his face and looks at you. "Gonyo was the second Avatar," he says slowly.

"Wow, the second Avatar sulking? Doesn't sound like how my folks describe him," you comment.

"Well, I can't exactly blame him for being disappointed," he admits. "I was hardly a shining example of how to be a great Avatar."

"Could I talk to one of the others?" you ask.

"Yes, but I think they have to be the ones to contact you," he answers.

"So, how do my powers work?" you ask.

"Kind of a vague Question," he responds.

When it happened to you...it was strange, Wan and Gonyo were here with me. In a way, we were all sort of "with you" when that happened. "No. Gonyo told me that is a VERY bad idea," he says. "I don't remember why, though...."

"Wait, in the Avatar State, I can draw on your memories?" you ask.

"I don't think it works quite that way," he responds. "Did you even remember what happened after you went out of the Avatar State? It's more of you stepping back and letting the rest of us work."

"So, what else have Gonyo and Wan told you?" you ask. "What am I supposed to do now that I'm the Avatar?"

"Well, Wan and Gonyo spent their lives trying to stop war between the three kingdoms," he answers. "Gonyo ended the war, while Wan died in the beginning of it. Wan mentioned something about being "the bridge between worlds". Gonyo talked about maintaining peace. Seems kind of pointless; it's only been a little over thirty years since he died, and everyone is ready to go to war again. And if they do, well, you're no Avatar Wan, that's for sure."
