Previously, on Avatar Quest.....

Soon after your father left you, your mother, and Sena in charge of the settlement in his absence, you fell under attack by a group of bandits. After a fierce fight, Felna managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, killing several bandits and forcing the rest to retreat. Knowing it was only a matter of time until they returned in greater numbers, you and the others created a sand fortress on the beach and trained for the upcoming battle. Traps outside kept the bandits from making it into your base, until a pair of Airbenders joined the battle. They caused chaos in your base before being killed and fed to the Shark Turtle. You then confronted Ming, the bandit leader, who challenged you to a duel. It was a fierce battle, but eventually, you gained the upper hand, and Ming died of a mixture of injuries and exhaustion. For the next few weeks, nobody went far from the fortress, and your father soon returned. You were informed that the Queen wished to meet you, and after saying goodbye to those you wished to say goodbye to, you departed. After being escorted to the capital, you met the Queen in her throne room. She was very happy to see you, and she acted very pleasantly towards you. After answering a few questions, you demonstrated your Earthbending for her against one of her guards. The two of you spoke for a while longer before she showed you to your room. Falling asleep, you were confronted by the previous Avatar, who seemed rather unimpressed with you.

>Welcome to Avatar Quest. Here are the rules.

Decisions are made by vote. Each vote has a ten minute interval, after which, the option that receives the most votes it the one that is chosen.

There are no write-ins unless explicitly stated

Some options require rolls. In that event, rolls will be out of 100. Whether rolls succeed or fail is decided by the first three rolls. If one passes, then you succeed regardless of the other two. Rolls will really only occur during training, or when trying something new.
All decisions are final. If you regret voting for something, too bad. Think carefully before you make decisions.

Try to keep waifu bullshit to a minimum.

"Sounds like the Avatar State is the kind of thing I'd want going all the time," you tell him.

"No. Gonyo told me that is a VERY bad idea," he says. "I don't remember why, though...."

"Wait, in the Avatar State, I can draw on your memories?" you ask.

"I don't think it works quite that way," he responds. "Did you even remember what happened after you went out of the Avatar State? It's more of you stepping back and letting the rest of us work."

"So, what else have Gonyo and Wan told you?" you ask. "What am I supposed to do now that I'm the Avatar?"

"Well, Wan and Gonyo spent their lives trying to stop war between the three kingdoms," he answers. "Gonyo ended the war, while Wan died in the beginning of it. Wan mentioned something about being "the bridge between worlds". Gonyo talked about maintaining peace. Seems kind of pointless; it's only been a little over thirty years since he died, and everyone is ready to go to war again. And if they do, well, you're no Avatar Wan, that's for sure."

I'm half expecting that she actually won't do anything anytime soon. Let us get away with thinking we deceived her while she sends troops to take our family hostage. Then she confronts us.
>>
>>33828092

I don't think so. I think she would only do that if we actively deny that we are the Avatar.

As far as she knows, we've been a pretty perfect guest so far and she would be to on our good side as long as possible.
>>
>>33828130
Thoughts on what we should say if she confronts us? I'm thinking we should admit to it and if she asks us why we hid it, explain that we are worried about being taken from our family and paraded around.

His plan for winning Liu Bei the Threekingdomb owl was to backstab Wu for Jing, backstab Liu Zhang for Yi, and then ally with Wu to take down Cao Cao.

His treatment of Wei Yan was terrible as well. Basically slander Shu Han's most successful general so that your chosen successors can take over.

Was he a bad person for the era? No, I think it was necessary. But he's not a Saint.
>>
>>33828974
Remember when he advocated invading Liu Bei'd relative's land? Or that time when in spite of his lord dying, and all of his brothers to Wu, he glossed over it and allied again?

Or perhaps those times when he didn't stop mobilising the entire of Shu to attack Wei?

Or perhaps that time he advised Liu Bei to effectively burn an entire city to the ground so Wei's forces would be delayed?
And later in that event, when Liu Bei forced him to take the peasantry from said town with him, he advocated leaving them behind and riding ahead?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longzhong_Plan

>The idea of seizing Jing Province in the Longzhong Plan was a flawed concept because Sun Quan would never accept Liu Bei in control of this critical area, crucial for the security of his base in Jiangdong. In essence, Zhuge Liang is charged with failing to make an objective analysis of the political situation in 207.

Allying with Wu was always a necessity as Shu was always the weakest of the three powers.

The Northern Expeditions was just a dumb idea. He had really no way of maintaining the campaign, his supply route was terrible, and he was horribly outnumbered. It set a precedent that would eventually destroy Shu.

She seems to have been expecting that sort of response, but looks curious nonetheless. "And why is that?"

"I was trying to keep that relatively secret until I had a firmer grasp on my abilities," you explain. "You may or may not know the last Avatar met an early end. I don't intend to follow in his footsteps."

She sighs. "I had assumed that was the reason there hasn't been an Avatar in so long. I heard the rumors of the young man in the Southern Kingdom who was said to use other elements, but was then killed. Most others assumed that either there was no new Avatar after Gonyo, or that the new Avatar had simply decided not to reveal himself. And now, it seems I was right, for here you are."

"Yes, and?" you ask.

"What do you mean?" she asks. "Do you not understand how much it means that you're here right now?"

"No, I'm fairly ignorant," you admit. "My predecessor spent all night yelling at me for it. You have no idea how annoying it is to be called stupid by a guy who can't even remember his own name."

She seems a bit confused by what you just said about speaking to your predecessor, but doesn't comment on it. "Avatar Wan stopped the dark spirit Vaatu from bringing ten thousand years of darkness to our world, and separated the humans from the spirits. Avatar Gonyo spent his life ending a war between the three kingdoms that could have been the end of us all."

She rises from the table and turns around, taking a few steps towards her throne before turning back to you. "The Avatar has always been more than an individual who can simply bend all four elements. The Avatar is meant to be a bringer of peace. Wan brought us an era free of Vaatu, one where humans and spirits were no longer in constant conflict, one that was supposed to be full of peace. When the peace failed, Gonyo saw to it that it was restored. Evidently, the next Avatar died too young to do his job, and so the peace has begun to fall apart once again. Since the War of the Three Kingdoms ended, my own kingdom has been ravaged by bandits and civil war. The Civil war ended many years ago, and the bandit threat has been reduced somewhat, but now the three Kingdoms are on the verge of fighting each other once again."

"The Bandits should be dealt with, I killed Ming and I'm sure the rest are all afraid of me," you inform her.

She smiles and nods. "I'd heard rumors, thank you. Ming was a terrible menace, and many lives have been saved now that he is dead."

"As for the war, even if I suddenly announce I'm the Avatar, I doubt I will be able to stop the war from emerging as it is," you continue. "And that's exactly the reason why I have decided to not reveal myself. I don't have the experience, or the training of any of the previous Avatars who did these things. I chose to reveal myself when I was ready and able to bring peace."

She looks at you with sympathy. "And I wish hat you could do exactly that, but the world won't wait because you're not ready. War won't delay so you can train, the world needs you, Shin."

"You seem to have a plan in mind, so enlighten me," you instruct.

"I believe that war is not inevitable," she tells you. "I believe that you can help stop it before it starts. During the War of the Three Kingdoms, many people saw it as hopeless trying to bring about peace. After all, Avatar Wan died in its opening battle. If he could not stop it, who could? Then Avatar Gonyo came along and brought the war to an end. I believe that if you reveal yourself to the world, the world will look to you for guidance. So many people have resigned themselves to the idea that war will come no matter what, but if the Avatar tells them that peace is possible, they might believe it, and work to make it so."

"Yes, I would," you tell her.

"Very well, I imagine he's down by the training area," she tells you. "I'll take you to him."

She leads you out of the throne room and down the hall, down the stairs to the second floor, and down the stairs to the first floor. As the two of you make your way outside, she speaks again.

"His name is Lathic," she says. "He is a powerful Airbender, and has been one of my advisors ever since I became Queen. When he's not offering advice to me, he can usually be found meditating near the training area."

She leads you past the training area, where her elite guards practice their bending. Some simply working on their technique while others battle in the ring. You see a large stone nearby, atop which sits an elderly looking man with a bald, tattooed head and a clean-shaven face. He wears rather plain looking clothing, and sits with his eyes closed, legs crossed, and hands on his knees.

"Master Lathic, I do not wish to interrupt your meditation," the Queen begins.

"Yet you do, just the same," Lathic replies without opening his eyes.

"Well, you're always meditating, I need to interrupt any time I wish to speak with you," the Queen says, defending her actions.

Lathic chuckles. "That is true."

He opens his eyes and gives the Queen a kind smile. "So, what can I do for you, your majesty?"

The Queen chuckles. "I've told you, old friend, for you I am simply Alara. You've known me since before I could even form a coherent word, after all."

He gets to his feet and steps down from the rock. "Well then what can I do for you, Alara?"

"There is somebody I would like for you to meet," she answers, gesturing to you. "Master Lathic, meet Avatar Shin."

Lathic turns to you, surprise registering on his face. He loses that look quickly, however, and bows in respect.

So what's the over/under on Ren being the bad guy here? I'm expecting that it'll be something like that he brainwashed Galda into trying to kill his sister so he could inherit the throne? Or at least, I'm expecting that to be what we're told from the Queen's side of the story.

"So, you admit that it happened," you point out.

He sighs. "If you are referring to what happened to Galda when she was a little girl, then yes, it happened. But, as I said, if you want the Queen's side of the story, I sugges-"

"I didn't say I wanted her side of the story," you interrupt. "I want yours. What happened?"

He turns around and climbs back onto the stone, taking a seat. "This is something of a long story, as there is much you must know for much of what happened to make sense. Do you have the time and patience to listen?"

"Yes, I do," you tell him, pulling a chunk of Earth up behind you and sitting on it in the same position he meditated in earlier.

He smiles at the gesture, and reassumes that position. "Alara and Ren were the children of a Firebender, their mother, and a nonbender, their father. Only Alara was born a bender, but their parents never treated them unequally. Ren learned to fight at a young age, and became incredibly skilled at it as time went on. The two of them were very close as children, though I suspect Ren always felt some resentment towards his sister for having bending when he did not. Two years after the War of the Three Kingdoms ended, the Great Civil War began. If I am not mistaken, your parents fought for the Queen in that war. Alara and Ren were confined to the palace during that war, which lasted fourteen years. Their father chose to fight, and was slain shortly after the war began. The two were left with only each other, and their mother. When she died, Alara became Queen. Alara and Ren worked together at first, setting to rebuilding what was destroyed during the war. However, Alara soon became concerned with another issue. Bending had become less and less common as the years went on, and many of the benders that lived in the Kingdoms were killed in the War of the Three Kingdoms. Even more of the benders in this Kingdom were killed during the Great Civil War. Alara feared that bending would soon die out, which she thought would be a horrible tragedy. So, she began enacting laws that she believed would help the remaining benders survive, and the number of benders in the Kingdom to grow. "

He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath before continuing to talk. "Ren, however, saw these new laws as oppressive to nonbenders. He and Alara debated this rather often, each argument worse than the last. It eventually reached the point where the two fought physically, at which point-

>So, she began enacting laws that she believed would help the remaining benders survive, and the number of benders in the Kingdom to grow. "

The key here is what kind of laws these were. I think Ren is probably likely to be right here without knowing anything else.

-Ren told Alara that she needed to be removed from the throne, and that he would do whatever was necessary to see that happen. The Queen, understandably, no longer felt safe with Ren in the palace, and so sent him out to live in the city."

He opens one eye to make sure that you are still paying attention. When he sees that you are, he closes it and continues. "Alara grew paranoid in regards to her brother after that. Having her own brother, with whom she had been extremely close for so long become her enemy was rather difficult for her to come to terms with. Rumors reaching the palace of Ren gathering followers for something didn't help matters, either. Still, it was nearly a decade before she had any sort of contact with Ren or the family he had started in the city."

He sighs, reaching the part he clearly doesn't want to talk about. "When Galda came to the palace, she somehow made it past all of the guards and found her way to the throne room. The Queen didn't know who she was until she identified herself as Ren's daughter. The Queen became visibly nervous when she heard that, but I do not think things would have happened the way they did had the guards in the throne room not discovered that Galda was armed. Alara believed that Ren had sent his own daughter to kill her. So, she had her tortured to find out why Ren had done it and what else he was planning, but over the course of it discovered that Galda truly had no idea what she was talking about. Alara was absolutely horrified by what she had done, and sent Galda back to Ren, desperately wishing she could take back the mistake she had made. But, the damage was done. She and Ren had no further contact until she sent him and his family to help yours in the expedition."

"What would the Queen have told me differently?" you ask.

"Honestly, I cannot say for certain," he answers truthfully. "The only way to know is to ask."

"I understand her mistake, but that's a horrible thing to do to a child," you tell him. "Such a thing cannot be easily undone or forgotten by either of them. My experience with Galda certainly colored my perceptions of the Queen, even though she did slit my throat."

He opens one eye again. "She did what?"

"The Queen says she wants peace," you continue, ignoring the question. "You say she feels shame and regret for what she did. I might not be a full Avatar, but helping them is a start."

He smiles in approval. "That would be a wonderful thing to do, Avatar Shin. But, how do you plan to accomplish it?"

"I want to get both Ren and the Queen's side of things, then try to get them talking and working things out," you tell him.

"It's worth a try," he tells you.

"I also think I should see the city and its people," you tell him. "Being here is little better than a gilded cage, and makes her policies little more than words on paper."

He nods. "I understand. Try speaking with the Queen, see if you can convince her to let you roam the city. If not, come tell me and I will try speaking on your behalf. Or, come speak to me if you ever need advice or simply want to talk. I can usually be found here."

With that, he takes deep, calming breaths, returning to meditating.
