@QMKingofHearts.

The date is October 17th, UC 0083. The Albion is still traveling over the south Indian Ocean, chasing after a Zeon submarine that the Federation believes is carrying its stolen Gundam: the Physalis. The nuclear-equipped mobile suit was taken from Torrington Base in Australia in a well-coordinated mobile suit assault, and seems likely to be used in a terrorist attack on the Federation at some point in the future.

Your job is to prevent that attack at any cost.

You currently have three hours until the Albion reaches the mouth of the Zambezi River, which your team has determined to be the most likely location for the submarine to send its cargo ashore. The only question is what you'll find when you get there.
(1/2)
>>
>>33848134
You find yourself conflicted as to where you and your team should be. On the one hand you want to be in position to sortie at a moment's notice, but on the other hand you figure the odds you'll be needed in the immediate future are fairly slim. It'd be a waste of your team's energy to remain on call twenty-four hours a day from the minute you reach Africa.

Can't we do both of these, technically you put Kou on our team, could we put Haman in the Core Fighter to do some recon, or would she not have enough flight-hours? Haman's pretty much stuck doing nothing with us aside from limited mine duty.
>>
>>33848201
>Newtype training session (how?)
Blindfolded dodgeball!
>>
>>33848317
Point. I take back my suggestion to send Monsha.
>>
>>33848201
Instigate a four or five hour rotation between both teams. Two members from each team is on stand-by to go wheels up in under fifteen minutes while everyone else sleeps and rests. I'm actually surprised this isn't already implemented.

Get somebody else up in our scout. We can't risk fatiguing one of our pilots before shit hits the fan.
>>
>>33848318
To clarify: Kou is still technically not on "your team". He's been sent to Dominic's side of the ship due to low hangar space, but falls under Burning's command.

That wasn't made immediately clear last thread. Mea culpa.
>>
>>33848333
If you can dodge a colony, you can dodge a ball!
>>
>>33848364
Oh OK, well still my idea stands, could we convince South to let Haman pilot the core fighter on recon? She needs more practice, and it should be in a non-combat scenario. Plus she might find stuff more easily than Kou because Newtype shenanigans.
>>
>>33848411
I don't think Haman has any idea how to pilot a plane, though. She grew up in a zero gravity vacuum. Aerodynamic flight is a rather foreign concept to her. I'm sure she understands the concept, but actually doing it is probably outside her skill set.
>>
>>33848348
Ok lets do this.
>>
We should go over plans to take down the 02 with our team, Burning's, and Nina. Talk shop. Since we're practically on top of them.
>>
>>33848448
Yeah, I did ask about her flight hours. But then again Amuro could fly the core fighter pretty easily, and he only read a manual.
>>
>>33848448
Oh god, I just had a horrible vision of Haman trying to pilot a plane, and being as successful as your average Dopp pilot.
>>
>>33848201
You decide to head up to the bridge to find South, and mull over a few things with him regarding how the next few days are likely to go. When you step onto the bridge you find the older pilot talking with one of the operators, and politely wait for him to finish.

"Ah, Commander," he finally acknowledges you. "I didn't realize you were here. Apologies."

"No hurry, South. So what's going on up here?"

Burning shakes his head. "I'm just taking a few statements for Monsha's file. Starting to wonder how many people on this ship he HASN'T molested, aside from you and me. But I guess that's not why you're here?"

"How could you tell?" you joke.

"Because we're not talking in sick bay over Monsha's corpse."

You nod. "I was thinking our teams should share readiness duties from 9pm to 9am, so that at least a few of us are ready on the spot in case of an unexpected incident."

Your old friend and mentor nods to you. "Actually, Karen and I were discussing that earlier. and we've worked out a schedule. It'll be posted some time later today."

"Good. And about Uraki... I think we should rotate him out of scouting duty. Keep him refreshed."

Burning walks past you and motions for you to follow him. "Good thinking. Any thoughts on who should fly this morning's mission?"

I want a Newtype piloting it, but we need to be combat ready incase it actually finds the sub. Which also discounts CC. And also gossip.
>>

>I'll do it, it's too boring to saddle anyone else with
>>
>>33848653
>I'll do it
>Wait
"Getting back in the saddle, eh?"

"We'll haft to talk shop here. Grab the recent satellite maps of the region and figure out how we want to approach this before we deploy."

"By the way, did anyone get a look at the person who jacked the 02? Surely there was security footage. Who knows, maybe one of my team might recognize 'em."

Are we going to bring South in on the big conspiracy at some point? Having another trustworthy individual would be handy.
>>

"I'll do it," you tell him as you walk through the corridor down to the ready room. "Too boring for anyone else to be bothered, but I'll have my two youngest team... my... waitashit."

"Sir?" the Lieutenant asks, confused.

"Since when are you and my CO on a first-name basis?" you ask him, giving him a puzzled glance.

"Two old soldiers in the same line of work," South shrugs. "Past that, I sure as hell ain't telling you, sir. A gentleman and an officer never tells."

"Oh, and by the way," he adds as you near the room, "how'd your team sleep last night, Commander? Or did they?"

"I'll have your bars one of these days, Burning," you joke.

Ensign Uraki, Haman, and Rossweisse are the only pilots in the waiting room. Which is fine, those were the three you wanted to talk to anyway. Uraki seems to be staring dejectedly into a cup of coffee: the back to back scouting missions seem to be only one thing weighing him down right now. Haman and Rossweisse both seem fairly amused, though.

"Uraki, "you announce, "I'll be taking over the core fighter this morning. Get some rest."

The young man mumbles something incoherent as he salutes you, spilling a bit of lukewarm coffee on his face in the process.

"I'll just see to this..." Burning tells you. "Come on, Uraki. Time for bed."

"As for you two," you tell your young Newtype teammates, "I have some required reading." From one of the shelves over the coffee machine, you pull down a manual on the operation of the Core Fighter II and toss it lightly at Haman.

"We'll be rotating in, I take it?" she asks you.

"That's right." You then hear South the mic for the PA system.

"Miss Purpleton," he announces. "please prep the Core Fighter with Commander O'Hara's flight data. Launch time is in thirty minutes."

I don't follow. Is he implying something?

Let's test the effective control range for those mines. If we have a cluster bomb laying around that we can attach to the fuselage hardpoint, stick a couple mines in it and have Haman periodically check to see if she's receiving telemtry.

"So what was wrong with Uraki?" you ask Haman. "And why'd you seem to find it so amusing?"

Haman grins and shakes her head. "He... can't really read a situation," she tells you.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning he made a pass at Rossweisse," Haman finishes.

You shake your head at Rossweisse. "And let me guess, he thought you were giving him the silent treatment and got his feelings hurt?"

Rossweisse nods silently.

"He doesn't realize that Rossweisse doesn't talk very much even to people she DOES like," Haman explains. "He's dense, but he bruises easily. Not her fault at all."

"So is it that your really don't like him? I mean, he seems nice," you admit, "but a little naive."

Rossweisse shakes her head again. "Not interested," she says softly.

"Oh? That so?"

Rossweisse stands, takes a few steps towards you, and places a fingertip lightly against your forehead. "Yes," she finishes with a smile before walking off towards the quarters she shares with Haman.

Haman merely cocks an eyebrow at you before flipping open the manual.

You have a few minutes left before you need to get to the Core Fighter.

After stepping into your flight suit, it's down to the hangar you go... despite the bustle in the corridors leading there, it's a bit easier for you to make your way there. After all, the crew of the Albion doesn't know you, they know your reputation. Some of them have even heard how you manhandled Monsha, and so you even get a few respectful salutes.

Surprising how much popular support kicking his ass back in Torrington earned you.

"Is the core fighter ready" you ask Nina and Audrey as you approach the machine.

"Sure is," Audrey tells you. "Monsha even managed to finish cleaning it just before you arrived."

"He works too slowly," Nina sighs. "Anyway, you ready for this?"

"I think so. But I'm wondering how close this will be to a Saberfish," you admit. "It's been a long time since I flew in atmosphere, too."

Nina nods at you with a reassuring smile. "It flies mostly the same as the Saberfish, just a bit faster and a bit quicker to maneuver."

"And Carya wanted to remind you to watch the wing loading," Audrey adds. "She also sent this down here from her quarters."

Ensign April holds out a small bag of animal crackers, and a second filled with trail mix: specifically the kind she puts chocolate-covered blueberries into instead of regular M&M's. You quickly snap up the treats.

"How'd she know to have all this ready?" you ask quizzically.

"Hell if I know," Audrey admits. "I never know how Lieutenant Marseille knows the things she knows. Speaking of knowing things, I had no idea you liked animal crackers! That's adorable!"

Feeling slightly disgruntled, you climb into the cockpit. "I don't especially," you tell her. "Carya saw me eating them once, and now she just likes to tease me with them."

"Sure," Audrey winks at you. "Right, Dominic."

Nina nods. "Clever, I'll get on it."

It takes only a few extra minutes to mount the weapon to the Core Fighter, and your borrowed machine is soon lined up on the catapult.

"So," you hear Audrey's voice in your headset as you launch out of the Albion. "How do you like it?"

"Feels a bit off," you admit. "There's a bit of resistance on the left elevator when I try to raise it. Nothing too severe."

And where are you going?

Wait.. was that Carya?

"I don't know. I was thinking about following my nose, as it were."

"Dominic?" Audrey asks, slightly confused. "Who are you talking to?"

"I... nobody. Guess I'm just thinking aloud," you reply. That was weird.

"Turning due north," you announce, "holding steady, over."

"Read your heading as due north," Audrey replies. "Just curious?"

"Following my gut," you tell her.

It's a mere fifteen minutes at Mach 1 before your 'gut feeling' is completely vindicated: you spot a large black hull surrounded by white wake. The submarine is here, and it's sitting on the surface!

Uh no I meant that because of Minovsky particals in general radio communication over long distances is near impossible. There's such poor communication on earth and in space they can't really check anything. Wired comms still work fine though. ... and immediately make a mental note that the psycho-mines work just fine at this range, though there's something about the way your core fighter moves when the weapon's weight is released that you don't like.

Haman takes control of the mine, and it's less a matter of controlling it as it is adjusting its trajectory. You take another mental note on the difficulties Haman seems to be having with the kick motors mounted to the weapon, before it slams into the water next to the submarine and detonates right amidships, practically breaking the ship in half.

You take the core fighter on a slow orbit around the dying submarine, and watch as its pressure hulls and watertight bulkheads flood in the aftermath of the blast. Your senses tell you there are still a few survivors struggling to save their boat, either not realizing that it's a lost cause or refusing to give up.

Why do they never give up? If they'd just surrendered at the end of the war, they wouldn't be here at all. They wouldn't be choking on fumes, or drowning in the dark as their boat's power fails and the damaged bulkheads give way to the sea.

Fools.

"This is Laughing Man, calling Home Base, or any other EFF forces," you announce over the radio, "have engaged Zeon submarine, coordinates..."

You quickly scan the instruments and report your location. However, as you're looking things over on your console, you see a button you're not familiar with based on the layout of the Saberfish...
>99

... why the hell didn't Nina tell you there was a laser comm system on this thing?

"Calling Albion, this is Devil's Jester, over," you announce, hoping you've got the thing pointed the right direction.

"... copy, Jester, what's your status, over," you hear Audrey's voice reply.

"Found our sub, looks like it was sneaking its way north from the Zambezi delta. Engaged it, and it's sinking. No mobile suits, will report on survivors in a moment, over."

"Copy, waiting on your word, over," comes Karen's voice in reply. Huh, seems she's taken over now that something important has happened.

Your next move is to aim a burst at the stricken submarine, whose bulkheads continue to collapse. The entire stern seems to have slipped under the waves, and there are a few figures floating in the water. You're not sure how many are bodies and how many are survivors, though.

"Zeon submarine, this is Commander O'Hara, EFF. Abandon your vessel and prepare for rescue. Repeat, abandon ship and prepare for rescue. Any act of aggression would be... inadvisable. Over."

You then signal the Albion again. "Captain, we have a dozen or so survivors in the water, maybe more. Some of them may have valuable intelligence, recommend deviation to recover survivors, over."

It takes Karen a while to reply, and you can imagine she took a while to convince Captain Synapse to divert his attention to a rescue effort.

"Will comply, Commander. Albion out."

Core Fighter's got a range of about five hundred miles, if I'm remembering the tech specs right. Assume it's been halved because of the weight of the psycomine and we still should be able to stay in the air for a while.
>>
>>33851665

You're not sure how grateful they'll be, seeing as you were the one that blasted their boat to begin with, but it's the least you can do.

Funny, more trouble from the elevator. That's disconcerting.

"Hey, Albion?" you radio Karen again.

"Dominic?" she replies.

"I'm having a bit of trouble with my elevators. One side's really sluggish. I suspect a problem with the hydrolics. Over."

There's a pause as the comm equipment gets passed back to Nina. "That's impossible, I checked everything right after the last mission."

"Well, it's fucked up now, Nina. Don't know what to tell you."

You can hear the Core Fighter II's design chief sigh. "Fine. Stay on site a while longer, we'll come to you. Can you keep it up a while longer?"

You can hear swearing over the radio. "Got it, Dominic," Audrey replies. "No hydrolics left side. Are you losing it?"

F15 lost the wing back in 1983 actually, training accident involving a mid air collision with a A-4 Skyraider (which didn't survive) in Israel.

A-10s have survived plenty of times with shit blown to hell (lost engine, other systems etc). So has the SU-25 Frogfoot.

Now the B-17 you mention...you gotta look up some pics of the battle damaged ones that managed to land. They make that missing wing and landing it look like a walk in the park that anyone could do. I seriously have no idea how planes, that look like they'd fall apart any second from castraphoic damage, could actually crash land (and even legitimately land) with survivors.
>>

"Shit," you mutter. "The elevator is jammed at a pretty high angle. If I wasn't banking so hard when it froze it might not be as much of a problem."

"But now it's a question of bleeding airspeed to compensate or maintaining the bank and your speed," Audrey summarizes.

"Right," you acknowledge. "For now I need to just keep it in the air until you arrive on site."

"Reiko," Audrey barks out at the secretary, "what are you seeing in the manual about correcting hydrolic issues? Nina, what have you come up with?"

There are a few tense minutes where Nina and Reiko are discussing your options back and forth, but eventually the reach a consensus.

"Dominic, we'll need you to vary your thrust out of each engine as you try and line up on the Albion. Then we'll need you to match the angle on your left elevator as you come in to trim out. You'll be coming in at a high angle of attack, so you may not be able to see the ship. If it comes right down to it, go ahead and cut power and spike the landing."

"You won't hurt me for breaking your machine?"

"Of course," Nina replies. "Just try and keep the damage to a minimum... to yourself too."

"Keep the net ready," you advise her. "This may get bumpy."

True to their word, it's barely twenty minutes before the Albion arrives. You shift your thrust back and forth between the left and right engines, and slowly widen your orbit until you see the Albion all but filling your view. Then, as you approach, you trim off and feel your nose pitch up as you match your right elevator to your left...

>64
And slam into the Albion much harder than you intended... hard enough to buckle the landing gear but not quite hard enough to do any life-threatening damage to either ship or aircraft. Though you have to say, the cosmetic damage will probably be severe: especially to your face as your head slams forward into an airbag. Thankfully the emergency net stops you from sliding all the way into the hangar.

If you want to get really specific, the core fighter ii is a single surface, forward-swept wing. Technically, it has a rear control surface called an elevon, as it combines the typical purposes of an aileron and an elevator.

I picked elevator arbitrarily, because the average person doesn't know the difference anyways and I have trouble spelling technical terms like 'aileron' when I'm drinking and avoiding them makes proofreading easier.

Case closed moving on.
>>
>>33853101
You step calmly out of the cockpit of your fighter and walk towards your team, who seem relieved that you're able to walk away from the landing. Suddenly realizing that something is quite wrong with your face, you reach up to the bridge of your nose and quickly set it with a sickening noise that's halfway between a crunch and a squelch.

"You look terrible," Carya observes, wiping a bit of blood off your face. "Nina, get a team working on the fighter, figure out what went wrong."

"My cookies are ruined now," you moan, dropping the open bag of soggy animal crackers to the floor. "A little bit of magic has gone out of the world, but I guess we should focus on saving those Zeon sailors instead of holding a wake for my snack."

"Right," Karen nods. "I'll handle coordinating that with Reiko. Audrey, Carya? Get Dom upstairs and get him checked out. And Dom?"

"Yeah," you reply, trying in vain not to bleed on anything.

"Good to have you back in one piece."

In the ready room the ship's doctor, Doc Roe, has a difficult time examining you with all the mobile suit pilots crowded around you trying to 'help'. Eventually he declares you 'ship-shape', gives you something for your bleeding nose, and tells you to keep off it for a week or so.

He also advises the sisters not to wear any exciting perfume until you've fully recovered.

Haman seems deeply relieved that you're okay, and the sisters seem relieved as well... though they probably never doubted you would be. Audrey sees to have divided her attention between you and the ongoing investigation into the crash, and Rossweisse seems relieved, but still a little upset.

"Good job, Haman," you tell the younger Newtype with a pat on the back. "You can be my wingman any time."

Haman chuckles to herself. "And you can be mine."

Then, you turn your attention to Rossweisse. From their chair, you can see the sisters nod to themselves, satisfied, before turning to Audrey to chat about what the likely cause of the malfunction was. Audrey seems to want to wait for Nina's verdict, but Catrina seems to think your survival has made someone aboard the ship more nervous than they have any right to be.

"You okay, Rossweisse?" The raven-haired young woman turns her eyes towards you, and you can tell she's cried a little recently.

"You were worried about me, weren't you?"

Rossweisse nods emphatically before throwing her arms around your waist. Her head comes to rest against your shoulder, and it doesn't seem she's about to let go any time soon.

Then you look down at her head, and see that you were so quick to embrace her that you forgot your nose was still bleeding. You take a step away from her, and sheepishly wipe a bit of your blood off her head before you both start laughing.

"Go get yourself cleaned up, Ensign," you tell her. With a smile and a nod, she runs off to her quarters to shower.

It takes a few more minutes for the bleeding to stop. By that time you can feel that the whole ship is abuzz, wondering at your earlier incident.

Eventually Rossweisse returns, her hair still wet but now clean and blood-free. Still no word from the hangar.

With your team reassembled, you decide to pass the time by going down and checking in on your new Zeon prisoners. Out of a crew of 139 sailors and officers, only seventeen remain. Many of the men who got off the boat either died in the water before the Albion could render assistance, and a few died of their wounds after being brought aboard.

Blitzen shakes her head. "They're just like we were... still fighting a war that should be over by all accounts."

"Any idea who to start with once they've been treated and processed?" you ask your formerly-Zeon colleagues.

"There's only one officer," Carya observes, "and he's not likely to talk. On top of that, Zeon submarines have no female crewmembers for you to sweep the feet out from under."

"Too bad, really," Blitzen adds. "There seem to be a few technicians, though. They might be able to tell you something about the GP-02's current status and whereabouts."

Meanwhile, Nina seems to have found something that's pissed her off by the crashed core fighter.

"Sabotage," Nina declares furiously. "The hydraulics were deliberately damaged prior to takeoff, but probably after you took over piloting duty."

"Are you sure?" you ask.

"Positive... and I found THIS inside one of the access panels." In her clenched fist, you see a toothbrush with the bristles covered in paint.

The overwhelming sensation is one of fury, united towards a single man: Bernard Monsha.

"Why the toothbrush?" you ask the group almost flippantly.

"I... what?" Nina asks, surprised at both your tone and the question itself. Carya's anger at Monsha is abated as she considers the point herself. Haman and Rossweisse sense the shift in mood, though Audrey doesn't.

"Why does that matter?" she asks you angrily.

"I mean, it doesn't serve a point in sabotaging the Core Fighter, does it?"

"... no," Nina finally mutters. "It's not like it was stuck into an important system."

Catrina frowns. "Okay, so why the fuck was it there?"

Audrey shakes her head. "You don't think it was there in case the saboteur failed, do you?"

"It makes sense," Haman admits. "It'd be a good way to cover for any mistakes... and I was ready to pounce on that Monsha bastard, too."

You walk over to the PA station and broadcast a message across the whole ship, while trying to project a sense of cold rage through your voice. "Lieutenant Burning," you growl into the microphone, "report to the hangar deck immediately... we have something to discuss."

If the shivers you see running through a pair of nearby technicians is any indication, your ruse is working fine so far.

"What is it, sir?" Burning asks a few minutes later as he arrives at the hangar. "Also, you sure you're okay to be working so soon after the crash?"

"I'll rest when I'm in my grave, South," you reply quietly. "Listen, I want you to pretend to arrest Monsha for sabotage. Make it loud and flashy, but then increase security down here. I think we've got a mole, and I want to lure him out."

South nods. "I understand, Dom. I'll make it enough of a show for Burnie to piss himself in fear."

"Thanks, South," you tell him. "Glad I can still trust you."

"We read the internal report on the GP-04, remember?" Haman presses. "We know you've been hiring former Zeonic and Zimmad employees, so which of those did this Orville guy work for?"

Carya nods quietly, and Rossweisse's eyes narrow dangerously. Audrey shrugs.

"We'll need more proof than that, but it seems like he's our guy," she concludes.

"Then we'll get proof," you reply. "We'll seal that particular leak, then we'll get him to talk about where the GP-02 is heading, then we'll get it back. What could go wrong?"
