>21, 15, 20 vs DC 23 (+4 from a write-in)
>Severe Failure

You stroke your chin contemplatively for a moment before responding. In the end you extend your hand to shake. When he reaches forward to grasp your hand, his hand merely slides through your own. A fake, it appears. You look to the wall behind him, thinking it the most logical place to put a camera. "I will need my allies and my gear, as well as some supplies. As you have already personally told me, you need me. Not the other way around. I can do what three years and all of your resources could not in mere minutes of my time. Alternatively you could refuse my proposal and spend the next decade figuring out where the key hole is, and the words to open the latch."

The image of the Admiral vanishes but his voice responds. “Your allies, your gear, and some unspecified value of 'resources' just for a task that requires a handful of minutes to accomplish? Sounds to me like you intend to screw us over, or you're preparing for an escape attempt. Whether you like it or not, I still hold all the cards here. You're either going to march out of this office and find yourself locked away in some god forsaken cell to be forgotten or you're going to find yourself standing before a thousand year old stone gate trying to figure out a way to open it. There are no alternatives.”

Crap, he called your bluff. Panic flashes through you, briefly, while you try to think of a way out of this. You could always just break out of any cell they put you in, but you're so close. You could get to this 'gate' and be on your way home without spilling a drop of blood...

What's a technologically superior civilization to do once a portal to a medieval era world with magic opens up? Gee I wonder, no ill thoughts, avarice or conquest in the planning, no sir.

The only thing I can see working is getting Fulvia's stored vys expended to sabotage their attempts at opening it again and crossing over. For that, though-we'll need a way to get everyone over, no doubt they'll take some hostage. Might take SK through for kicks if he wishes, but I'm all down for Fulvia using her vys pool to sabotaging the gate.

You channel vys, focusing on collecting your scattered thoughts and trying to formulate a convincing proposal. You quickly patch something together thanks to your magically enhanced mind. “Admiral, I don't think you understand. I travel with an artificial intelligence created by the Rhynian Empire, those that you call 'The Visitors. Two of my other companions were found imprisoned inside Rhynian facilities, saved from the fate that would befall that empire. All of them have some measure of magical talent. Talent which will be vital in this endeavor.” The Admiral seems intrigued. “Well, it hardly seems like we need you at all then, does it?” You grin. “Ahh! On the contrary, Admiral. I am the only one in my party who possesses knowledge of enchanting, of the glowing script which likely covers the portal.”

There is a long silence before the Admiral responds. “Fine, you'll have your allies with you.” You decide to double down. “Just my allies won't be enough. My time in your world has drained my reserves of power and a night's rest near a powerful artifact would allow me to work with a clear head. Not to mention with my gear I have tools necessary for activating enchantments and determining their purpose, tools that will also be necessary if I find any of the runes have been eroded or damaged and need to be repaired or bypassed.” The Admiral sighs. “You'll be given leave to dress yourself in your own clothes and get whatever tools you need, but I can't allow you to have any weapons in the lab. You'll also be monitored by my own personal guard to make sure the job is done right. You have three days to accomplish the task you've been assigned.”

You're about to push for more but you hear a loud click, and when you speak there is no response. You sigh, it seems that's as good as you can hope for. You're lucky he doesn't realize that all of your equipment is stored inside your cloak, weapons as well as actual tools. You push yourself out of the seat and make your way to the door, which slides open as you approach. The guards are there waiting for you, their guns held casually in front of them. They nod to you and escort you not to the elevator, but to a door on your left. It opens as you approach and you find yourself faced with a stairwell.

One guard goes ahead of you and another goes behind. You're led up the spiraling staircase to another door, this one labeled in a language you don't understand. The door slides open, and you find yourself in a high tech, sterile room. A readout adjacent a small doorway reads 'stable' and glows with a friendly blue light. The guards step aside to allow you entrance, standing by the door once it slides closed. “The artifact is contained within the next room. All the sensors and equipment you might need are in here, as well as cots to rest on.” One of them, you don't think the same one who frisked you, says. “Your companions will be ushered up shortly, along with your clothing.”

Why not both? See what we can determine from the runes and how it works as well as sabotage once we get through. Be prepared to hit the spice hard like a colombian drug lord snorting all the coke he could ever have if it comes down to it during the ritual.

Anyway, my plans for this time are BS them for the first two days.
Have fulvia gather vys and talk to the seientist. make that bitch learn as much techy shit and repairing them.
we could meditate on metal/enchanting during this time as well. * Honestly wouldn't hurt to learn some enchanting, could be what lets us figure out how that shit works.

We're leading them here anyway. thankfully guns and techy shit doesn't amount to much when they will be fighting dragons to get out. and a whole bunch of other shit.

I'd rather not let them " try and expand" into our world. they had theirs and they ruined it. We have fulvia learn as much as she can from them. and read any books them have. she has 48 hours till we actually have the last day and make it look like we're getting close.
everyone else should be focusing on gathering vys/ meditating focusing on increasing thier strengthen.
Like personally i want Prof to get his shit together. and gain master in fire. he could blast a couple shots stronger shots and not feel pain.
and so on

honestly if you want to go this route, im down but we study metal hard. and learn slow. dedicate a full day to this. we could rank up once at least and learn slow. throw down some metal magic around our brain for the effects of the spice.

LOL i forgot about that. we've a gun that's at least 3x more advanced as the one he will reward us.
>>
>>33876401
remember, our officers pistol has built in enchantments that offer capabilities beyond what a gun should be capable of. this other weapon might be similarly outfitted.
i cant even remember how it was described. anyone in the thread remember which thread it was mentioned in?
>>
>>33876518
But the gun he's offering probably has some special stuff.
It is also likely that we can empower the shots like we can with our flintlock.
We cant do that with these modern guns.

You make your way towards the door, contacting Profectus and Chryssa to update them on the situation. {I spoke with the High Admiral and they removed the portal device from beneath the tower to a secure area where they can study it at the top of the tower. He wants us to open the portal, probably so he can invade our reality and steal its resources. He agreed to let Fulvia, Skull Kid, Darzi, and I into the lab to inspect the portal but I'm sure if I told them they'd allow you up as well.} You wince as Prof and Chrys try to reply simultaneously, pain flaring in the back of your head. {One at a time please.}

Chrys speaks. {I would rather remain hidden below. If they decide to betray us we will still be free and able to attempt to free you.} Profectus 'speaks' as soon as she finishes. {If we don't get up there we might end up stranded on this world. Like you said, they probably want to invade our reality for its resources. You'll want to get through the portal as quickly as possible and destroy it on the other end to deny them the satisfaction and avoid getting stabbed in the back once your job is done.} There is a pause, and then Chrys speaks again. {Profectus makes several valid points. I am convinced.}

You're about to respond as you step through the doorway into the room beyond. It appears as though they converted a balcony into their secured lab, massive arching windows surround the room allowing you an unrivaled view of the city and the scarred wasteland beyond. You see the forest stretching out towards the horizon, the blackened earth immediately surrounding the city for several miles. You can even see the distant spires of the conclave and what you think might be another city in the distance.

The gate itself is what truly draws your eye though. Towering and ornate, it is covered in glowing runes. The meaning escapes you, but you can feel the power emanating from them. A massive gemstone sits at the top of the gate, the focal point of the construction. It glows like a miniature sun, casting strange shadows across the room. You feel yourself drawn forward, towards the portal. Towards the shimmering event horizon that marks the threshold between this world and your own...

Yet as you set forward on the first step and begin to climb towards the magic seems to die. The gem at the top goes dull and the bright glow of the runes fades to no more than a dull glimmer. It may just be your imagination, but you could have sworn a dark face with eyes like blue witch-light appeared for but the briefest moment in the gateway.

Found the Quest
>“Well, I'll hear you out at least. Doesn't mean I'll take the job.” He nods his head, a grin spreading across his face. “Good, there is a city in Elven territory. Situated on an island. It is the private estate of an extremely wealthy elf who made his fortune plundering ruins and selling the finds, then went on to become a warlord and conquer a few islands. The whole complex houses his family, his servants, and his trusted companions...” He trails off for a moment, collecting his thoughts. “This elf has a jewel he found in one of those ruins. It is large, about the size of a fist, and red. I want it. I don't care how you get it, as long as it ends up in my hands.”
>You stop him before he can whip the oxen into motion. “Wait, you never actually told me what you'd be paying me with!” He pauses, and thinks about it for a moment. “Oh, yeah. Damn, maybe the insanity is finally getting to me after all these years? Anyway...” He reaches back into the pile, and pulls out a small item. It reminds you slightly of your own firearm, except... much more advanced. “The Rhynians didn't invent guns, my friend. Nor did the Elaudians, or the Hiacians.” He twirls the pistol on his finger before grabbing it by the grip once more. “This, this was found in the Tomb of the Last Emperor, a gift from his Allies. The real inventors of the firearm."
>He tosses it behind himself casually. "You'd get that, along with two thousand silver." He says the number dismissively, as if it were nothing. He seems rather blase about the whole thing. You nod your head a few times. "Very well, but this is not like raiding old ruins, friend. I cannot promise success. If I do not think I can safely carry out the job, I will find you and tell you." He smiles and nods. "Of course, friend. There is no pressure if you decide that you do not want this task. The gem is not going anywhere, well, barring your action of course. Take your time, just not too long, yes?"

You decide to back out of the lab, lest the slightest provocation activates it properly and you're forced to rush through without your companions or risk letting a bunch of interlopers into your world. You find the two guards exactly where you left them. You contact Chryssa and Profectus to deliver a brief message before approaching them. {Go and retrieve our things, then walk in as if you own the building. I'll tell them to let you in.} That done, you call out to the guards. “Two of my companions will be entering through the basement in a few moments, dressed as guards I believe. You'll need to let them up.”

The guards share a glance, but one of them reaches up and presses a button on his helmet. You don't hear him speak but you assume he contacted someone, so you climb a short flight of stairs to inspect a bank of screens displaying what you can only assume is information about the Gate. One screen in particular, labeled 'energy output' spiked roughly a minute ago and stayed at an elevated level until only a few moments ago. Another screen displays an image of the gate itself and a third seems to be a list of dates and times. Notes probably.

Before you have a chance to sit down and properly read the notes Darzi and Fulvia are led inside, without Fulvia you note. With them are four guards dressed identically to the two who have been with you since exiting on this floor. Skull Kid is conspicuously absent, but at least they brought your things with them. Darzi still looks terrified, and she flinches when one of the guards hands her a stack of clothes, her clothes you realize. Fulvia is carrying your own, no longer bound in that strange metal coffin.

I'm just gonna go out on a limb and say Darkface has a connection to the portal from within the forest and is actively trying to prevent these peoples from turning it on, based on the vys connection we learned from our initial meditations here leading that way and how the gate got silenced on our closer approach.

Guys, we need our armor to check out the portal.
>>
>>33877466
I'm not sure. But if Darkface has been 1000 years persistent in sealing the thing I'm pretty sure our timelimit means nothing to it.

Keeping in mind that it probably lured us into this world for a reason beyond funzies it may want the portal for itself, or something else. Though it seemed to be able to contact us from this world and transport us here just fine.

I hope you keep going, don't want a second thread finished with barely a few updates. But on the other hand, you gotta watch your health man. Getting juiced up is important to keep running quest sessions.
>>
You make your way towards your companions, surrounded as they are by guards. For a moment they stand blocking your way, but they move without you needing to ask. You take your things from Fulvia and turn to face the nearest guard. “Where is Skull Kid?” The guard reaches up to his neck and presses a button. “The Admiral stated that Thaddeus 'Skull Kid' Humboldt was not mentioned as part of your agreement.” You curse under your breath, you suppose that sort of makes sense. You'd only mentioned your companions with some connection to your own World and simply assumed Skull Kid would be brought along as a matter of course.

Wait a second, did they say Skull Kid's real name was 'Thaddeus Humboldt'? That just sounds... ridiculous. Who on earth would name their child 'Thaddeus'? No wonder he always insisted on using fake names, you'd use a fake name too if your parents had been so cruel. You shake your head, banishing those thoughts from your mind and focusing on the matter at hand. “It was merely an oversight on my part. Skull Kid is vital to unlocking the secrets of the gate, I need someone who can operate your technology.” The guard replies unphased. “If necessary we can fetch a scientist to operate the machinery for you. You will need to discuss this 'Skull Kid' with the Admiral.”

You sigh, rubbing your eyes wearily. “Alright, alright. That's fine, I'll speak with the Admiral next time the opportunity presents itself.” You turn your attention to Fulvia and Darzi. “Darzi, get dressed. The row of bunks next to the bank of screens offers some amount of privacy if you would rather not do it here.” She nods sheepishly and clears her throat, mumbling a 'thank you' before hurrying away from you and the guards. “Fulvia, if you'd like you can take a look at the gateway in the other room. It seemed to react when I stepped into the room but died when I got close.” She nods her head. “Very well, Dux. I will inspect it and compare it to project files stored in my memory.” She marches away stiffly, it seems like lately she's been more irritable, in a passive-aggressive sort of way. Maybe you're imagining things.

You retreat to a corner where you can have some measure of privacy and quickly slip your compact blade back and palm the communications brooch before slipping off the prison uniform. You dress yourself in your own undergarments and then reach into your cloak and withdraw your armor, sliding your arms into the sleeves and pressing the cuirass flush against your chest. The armor latches onto your torso and expands until it's the same suit you've come to know and love. That done you pull on your Master's robes and finally drape your cloak over your shoulders, clasping it with the communication brooch.

(1/2)
>>
>>33878372
>>
You step out garbed as you usually are, though one of the guards immediately ask. “Convict, where did you acquire that armor?” You wave him off. “I am Mikhael Abdul-Hakim of El-Amin, Master Vatis in the employ of the Shah himself.” Well, that's not entirely true. When you were still in the employ of the Shah you were merely a Vatis, an expert certainly but no master. “As for the armor, it is necessary to interface with the gateway, protection your technology wouldn't provide.” The guard speaks again. “Convict, where did you acquire that armor?” You glare at him, pulling your cloak wide and pushing your hand beyond the thin barrier between the outside world and the void within. You withdraw a stick of jerky, chewing it thoughtfully. “What's it to you?”

Suddenly there's a gun in your face. “Empty the storage device, Convict!” There's more than a hint of panic in his voice. You're not sure why, but the cloak always seems to freak out these natives more than actual magic. It's odd. Fortunately one of his friends seem to possess a cooler head and forces the man's rifle towards the floor. Some sort of conversation passes unheard to your ears and the guard who pointed his rifle at you storms off. The guard who'd spoken with him nods his head in your direction, and you return the silent gesture.

(2/3, I lied apparently.)

>>
That seems to be the last of the drama, though the other guards seem to be fidgeting uncomfortably. You ignore them in favor of reading the journal entries left by past researchers. You pause on the steps and call out. “Darzi, are you clothed?” You hear her jump at the sound of your voice, and then the rustling of cloth. After a moment she calls out. “I'm dressed.” You sweep past the rows of bunks, sparing her only a glance to see her seated on one of the bunks and clutching her arms tightly. Your attention is quickly stolen by the banks of monitors. You take a seat and swivel your chair towards the screen displaying a list of dates and times. >>
>>33878564
>>Read them from oldest to newest.
Fulvia should get us an answer on how this gate works.
We read the journals to have a better grasp on it though.

But my point. After reading have the admiral bring us food/ and everyone focus on meditating. while Fulvia learns as much as she can about this place while focusing on gathring vys.
We do some metal or enchanting training on the gate.
Or finish off fire to expert, but that doesn't seem like the wises choice.
>>
>>33878643
Thirding/fourthing.
>>
Darzi needs to meditate or read a book right now so she can center herself or she's going to have a meltdown.
Gotta have a long talk with her later on.
A very long talk, maybe have her punch our face in with her armor.
>>
>>33878754
Oh wait the gate probably weakens reality right? Doesn't that help with something else? Like an effect of something?
>>
Guys, Fulvia ought to gather vys much faster near the artifact than she would anywhere else in the city. It was going to only be two more days before she was ready to cast the spell, here it will probably be a few hours. After we read the journal entries, we should meditate so that we're ready to go down the rabbit hole.

We should probably also talk to Darzi. Just ask if she's alright and if she needs anything, a show of good faith sort of thing. She seems really thrown out of sorts.
>>
>>33878786
Holes in reality make meditating easier. Weaknesses provide a +2 for effects and a +4 for metamagic. Actual holes have larger modifiers but larger drawbacks as well.
>>
>>33878789
Yeah, I agree with this line of thinking. Seconded.
>>
>>33878754

I'm sorry it's just that:
We're heavily reliant on equipment they have us. So much so that Soma makes it a point to write about it in nearly every single thread.
By using this equipment we now have to go and kill our former ruler almost assuredly plunging the nation into chaos.
They own our ass in the form of a favor with no restrictions or limitations.
All of these are facts and are some of the only things we know about them.
I'm just not seeing this ending well.

You try to puzzle out how to select things displayed on these damned things. You try pressing a few buttons, but more than half of these weren't even on the 'computor' you found in the old Rhynian power plant deep inside the mine. When you nudge an odd little lump of material with a wheel in the center and two buttons adjacent an arrow on the center screen moves a few inches to the right. You grab the lump and move it to the left, towards the screen with the journal entries on it. The little arrow moves with the lump, it seems. You maneuver the arrow onto the oldest journal entry and press one of the buttons, causing a separate menu to appear. You don't understand any of the words on this menu, but you click one at random. A window appears... why must this damned thing vex you so?

You close the window and try clicking a different button. This time it takes you to the journal entry proper. You're about to begin reading, but a thought occurs to you. Darzi isn't usually this bad about her scars, even when you'd just rescued her or after she punched you and ran off when you were hiding form those plant monsters. You spin around to face her and lean forward on your elbows. She flinches, but doesn't look up. “Are you alright, Darzi? Do you need anything?” She coughs, sitting up straighter and actually meeting your eyes. “No, I'm fine. It's just... nerves, is all.” She smiles, but there isn't really any feeling in it. You reach into your cloak and withdraw 'Five Effects Every Vatis Should Know', standing up and handing it to her. “Well so long as you're fine you can work on improving your talents. If nothing else it will help you kill time.”

(1/???)
>>
She takes the book, nodding her head in gratitude. “I thank you, but you should know by now I'm more than competent as is. I could beat you in a fight, certainly.” It's a jest, but there isn't really any feeling in it. You simply grin. “Well perhaps we'll need to put that to the test some day, once we're out of this twisted reality. Until then you'll need all the help you can get to match me.” She glares at you, but cracks the book and lays back on the cot to read. Hopefully that will settle her nerves.

You turn your attention once more to the journal entries. The first one is fairly brief.

“Project Gatehouse: Day 1, 13:47. 83PF-11-6
Retrieved artifact from ruins of old tower. Believed to be Visitor Gate. Team exterminated. Converted former viewing balcony into secure lab. Equipment to arrive tomorrow.”

That's it. You find it a little unsettling that it notes the 'team' was exterminated. Likely the retrieval team. Then again it makes sense, they probably didn't want knowledge of the gate's existence leaking out into the general population.

“Project Gatehouse: Day 2, 23:06. 83F-12-6
Equipment arrived earlier today. While taking energy readouts the gate activated for Dr. Robert Caldinius. A dark figure appeared, described as having 'glowing eyes and mouth, and a empty glowing socket where its nose ought to be'. It was said to communicate with Dr. Caldinius, but nobody save the Dr. was able to hear what it said. The Doctor stepped past the threshold and vanished. There has been no sign of him since.”

(2/4 or 5)
>>
This entry has two small images of paper at the bottom, labeled with a word you don't understand. Why take your notes in Rhynian and then do everything else with this nonsense? You click the first file, and a window opens. It displays an image of a man dressed in a white coat and wearing corrective lenses on his eyes approaching the gate. As he steps over the threshold he seems to fall into the gate, and then he's gone. The window closes once the playback stops, so you select the other file. It seems to be sensor data from the time of the disappearance. The energy level spiked off the charts, and apparently high levels of 'radiation' also filled the room. You're not sure what that might indicate. Regardless, you move on to the third entry.

“Project Gatehouse: Day 347, 00:13. 84PF-24-5
The one year mark approaches with little progress made after the disappearance of Dr. Caldinius. The black figure has appeared several more times, to several different researchers, but they have been given strict orders to ignore whatever it says. All other researchers in the room continue to deny any knowledge of what the figure is saying and we are incapable of detecting it on video, infrared, or ultraviolet cameras. Only consistent indication of the figure's presence is the spike in the gateway's energy output.”

You recall that you noticed a spike in the energy output that would've roughly coincided with your entry into the lab. You also recall the vague glimpse of the creature's eyes. It seems you're not the only person to see the figure, nor is it even a particularly rare occurrence. Why on earth would it tempt you into this world when it seems to spend most of its time trying to tempt people out?

(3/4)
>>
“Project Gatehouse: Day 563, 8:32. 84PF-30-11
Creature spoke to me today. Taken to calling it 'Magi'. Quote follows.
'Doctor Larson, your means of processing information are absurdly limited. With five feeble senses you pretend to comprehend mysteries beyond comprehension. You perceive things only as you are constructed to perceive them, with no chance to grasp their absolute nature. Why do you persist?'
Believe it may be some sort of safeguard against intrusion, designed to prevent tampering with the gate. Will not be discouraged.”

You're not sure why, but that quote sounds familiar. You can't recall if it's similar to a saying your master used to use or if you read it in a book somewhere. Probably a book, your master was usually less coherent.

“Project Gatehouse: Day 632, 12:14. 85PF-6-2
Bad dreams lately. Haven't been sleeping lately. Set up cots in the lab so the researchers can sleep on sight. Morale at all time low. Admiral threatening to cut funding lest we get results. Magi continues to elude me. Beginning to think destruction proper course of action.”

Showing signs of mental deterioration, that's not good. Why is it every journal you read ends with mental deterioration and eventual suicide? Granted you've only read one other besides this, and it hasn't yet ended in suicide...

“Project Gatehouse: Day 1095, 12:00. 86PF-11-6
Project terminated with the disappearance of Lead Researcher. Dr. Larson last seen leaving through West Gate.”

(4/5, I lied.)
>>
Hah! This one didn't kill himself, just went insane and wandered off into the wasteland to be eaten by mutants or die of exposure or something. There is some variety to these journals after all. You lean back, taking stock of your surroundings. The guards have arrayed themselves around the room, one of them is staring at you, and you wave. He waves back. Darzi appears to have dozed off with your book open on her chest. At least she calmed down enough to sleep. You're surprised to see that Chrys and Profectus haven't arrived yet.

You push yourself out of the chair and take a moment to stretch out, that chair was murder on your back. You take another look around the room and note that the Elaudian Steel armor you gave Darzi is standing in the corner, and the dragon egg is sitting on one of the bunks. You really ought to think about making some sort of carrying case for that thing, a harness or something that someone could wear. You shake your head briefly to focus yourself on the task at hand, finding out where Chrys and Profectus are.

You approach the guard who you waved to earlier, the guard still staring at you. “Where are my companions? I must have sent for them an hour ago, at least!” You demand, voice haughty. The guard replies utterly nonplussed, their voice surprisingly feminine. “Two hours, actually. They arrived shortly after you sent for them but you were focused on your reading, and they elected not to bother you. This 'Profectus' character can be found inspecting the gateway with the robot. The beautiful woman ought to be around here somewhere...”

You glare, taking a closer look at this guard. She's not wearing the same uniform as the other guardsmen, hers is the uniform worn by the officer who escorted you into the Tower after you were taken off the transport. Except it's missing the cape, and lacks decoration. “Damn it, Chrys. Why are you still wearing that uniform?” She reaches up to remove the mask, a task that apparently involves merely pressing a button. The mask recedes until it's merely four triangles at the corners of her face. “Specifically so that I may confuse you, Mikhael.” You think she might actually be smiling. She never smiles. Something must be wrong. “What are you so happy about?” You ask a tad huffier than you'd intended. She's definitely smiling. “Only because I am eager to return home, I assure you. I would never think to laugh at your expense. Not even internally.”

(1/4)
>>
Cheeky little... you ignore the comment and move on. “Well, I need to enter Fulvia's core to purge it of the corruption that has taken root there. If I start to thrash about and foam at the mouth do try and wake me.” She nods her head. “I will be sure to give you a few good kicks, but should my attempts fail and you expire we will find it in our hearts to go on without you.” You're used to this sort of banter with Profectus, but it just seems odd to hear it from Chrys. Good to see at least someone is relaxed though. It seems like ever since you got here everyone has been nothing but on edge.

You leave her there, and she marches off towards the row of cots once you've left her. On the other side of the door you find Fulvia sitting in front of the gateway, her projection dropped and her generator quite literally glowing with power. Profectus is standing in front of the gate, leaning forward. A black figure, more human-like than the amorphous blob that led you hear occupies the gate itself. It has a head, two legs, two arms. Everything that you would expect. The only difference is that it lacks any sort of distinguishing characteristics. It is neither male nor female, tall nor short, fat nor slim. Where its nose should be there is only a glowing blue hole. Its eyes and mouth shine with that same eerie internal light.

(2/4)
>>
Profectus proclaims loudly. “Yeah? Well let me tell you where you can shove your 'freedom': Up your own a-” Fulvia cuts him off tersely. “Insulting the ancient guardian of the gate hardly seems like a wise decision, does it? You would be more of a help to my work if you left.” Wow, Fulvia actually snapped at someone. You can't recall that happening... ever. It's a good thing you're choosing to do this now, because it seems like the deterioration of her psyche has accelerated since coming into contact with the gateway. It might have something to do with the higher concentration of vys. Unfortunately the figure vanished as soon as she spoke, so it looks like you'll have something to ask Profectus about later...

Profectus seems cowed, and he begins to slink away only to notice you. He is still wearing his guard outfit, but the mask has been retracted. When he sees you he claps his hands together. “About time! Miss me?” You smirk. “Like a man misses a knife in the gut.” Profectus waves you off. “Tell yourself what you like, Mik. You know I'm your favorite. Do you have my armor?” You nod, reaching into your cloak and withdrawing a neatly bundled pile of metal. You pass it to him, and he takes it gratefully. “Thanks, I can finally get out of this damned uniform. My boys have been getting crushed every step I take for the last three hours.” He grumbles, stalking off towards the door. It's good to have everyone back together, though you must admit you miss Skull Kid.

(3/4)
>>
You sit down next to Fulvia, casting her a wary glance. “So, how long until you are ready to cast the spell?” She responds brusquely. “I am ready to cast it as soon as you deign to grant me your presence, oh Great Leader.” You hold up your hands in mock surrender. “I admit, I put this off too long.” You don't admit that at all, she's only just today finally been ready to cast the damn spell. Still, the last thing you want is to get on her bad side right before entering her mind. Your apology seems to mollify her. “You have. Now then, if you are ready there are a few guidelines to establish. Do not touch anything save what you are there to remove. I believe corruption will present itself in many forms. Bugs, moving shadows, rust, rot, decay. Look for these things as signs of corruption.”

The glow from her generator begins to intensify, lightning arcing across it and even leaping to the floor. “I believe the key to purging my core will be to locate the highest concentration of corruption and eliminate it. My internal security will do the rest.” You nod along, listening intently. “My security measures will present themselves in the form of animal life, golems, and soldiers. Avoid them at all cost, for they will attack you just as they will attack the corruption. I will do my best to steer them towards other parts of my mind but I give no guarantees. Now then, are you ready?”

You think for a moment. “Am I ready to enter the increasingly corrupted mind of a thousand-year-old AI where I'll be forced to battle shadow-creatures and evade the internal security force that is supposed to purge her mind of threats? Yes. I am as ready as I'll ever be.”

There is a flash, and for an instant you are blind.
(4/5, I lied.)

When the whiteness fades you find yourself standing in a scorched land. Obelisk rise all around you, most of them half-buried yet still towering above you. They're covered in glowing, incomprehensible runes. Directly ahead of you is a strange building constructed in several different styles. Flying buttresses adorn the outer walls and stained glass windows reveal glimpses of lights glowing inside, but the arched entryway and some of the watchtowers wouldn't look out of place in the City your physical body currently resides in.

Large chunks of the building have been torn off and seem to be floating in the air. It seems they're being used to construct some sort of giant sphere, the inside of which glows an angry, throbbing red. Runes seem to be projected across its surface from some unknown source, and even as you watch a chunk tears off of one of the towers to lazily drift towards the hovering sphere. Beyond the structure, snow-covered mountains stretch skyward.
