You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

Currently, you were sitting in one of those classically darkened briefing rooms. Sitting with you were your witches, your aircrew, and Ugly and his sister. Up front, you can see Tokugawa and about a couple dozen of his Umibozu commandos. There were a few more Japanese personnel you didn't recognize, which you assumed to be pilots and other specialists attached to the mission.

(cont)
>>
>>33875302

At the front of the room stood a Japanese colonel whose name you've honestly forgotten at this point. He was giving the briefing in Japanese, so Jetstream got to work translating for you.

Apparently, your target was a Chinese chemical plant about fifty miles inland. While it was a legitimate chemical plant, it also served as a cover for a Chinese bioweapons lab. Tokugawa and his men would do most of the heavy lifting, doing the actual insertion into the facility as well as disposing of the stored bioweapons inside.

Your job was to act as recon in the opening stages of the operation, due to your stealth capabilities, and then stay on station to handle casualties once the Umibozu attacked. Ugly would provide CAS.

However, you also notice on the map that the chemical plant was very close to populated areas as well. That was a bit concerning.

"He's now asking if there are any questions." Jetstream nudges your side.

Zero, we can just say the Helo is having mechanical problems and pull out. Hope the Japs understand that anything they see as retaliation beyond hitting the site would not be seen as such by the rest of the world.

>>33875522
The Umibouzu are actually in the perfect position to commit a war crime and get away with it scot free. All of them have had their names struck from all official records and documentation. That means no licenses, no proof of citizenship, hell, even no birth certificate. These guys don't officially exist.
If they do commit a war crime, unless they're caught in the act and there's proof they did it, they can get away with no trouble. Since there is no official record of them while serving, there is no one they can track down and prosecute. All names lead to dead ends, no records they were in the area, hell, according to official records, they don't exist. if they are not caught in the act and arrested then and there, there is no one prosecutors and witness can put in front of a tribunal or world court.

"Ask him about collateral damage. How are we handling that?"

Jetstream shoots off the question, and the colonel quickly responds.

"He says that we will avoid civilian areas, but the chemical plant and anything in its immediate vicinity is a weapons free zone."

"But what about workers?" You frown.

"We'll be doing our attack in the middle of the night. There shouldn't be anybody there." Jetstream sighs. "But I understand your concerns."

"And who are those guys over there?" You point to the non-Umibozu personnel.

"Advisers from the Epidemic Prevention Department." Jetstream explains. "They're here to make sure the weapons are disposed of properly."

"Can they handle themselves in fight?" You ask.

"Well, they're technically a part of the IJA." Jestream shrugs. "But they're a very secretive lot."

With the briefing over, everybody begins to file out of the room to get their preparations in order. You follow suit and you all gather in your squadron hangar, where you decide to review the mission to make sure everybody knows their roles.

"All right, so the gist of it is, since we have stealth capability, the idea is for us to come in about half an hour before the Umibozu do. We scope out the area, and if things look all right, we let our guy land like planned. However, if we feel or see something wrong, we always have the option of waving them off. Though, I don't think Japanese like that very much."

"We don't." Jetstream nods.

"Got it." Ugly nods. "But hostile forces are open targets?"

"Of course."

"What kind of support can we be expecting?" Janice asks.

"I can answer that." Jetstream steps forward. "The IJN has a carrier group just off the coast. In addition to being our final staging point, the Soryu will also provide air assets if needed, but as far as the ground assets go the Umibozu is all we have."

"Okay." You nod. "Any more questions?"

"We'll handle it as we go." You sigh. You check your watch and note the time. "All right, get geared up and get the birds ready to fly. We're heading out within the hour."

The sun is just going down as your Ghost Hawk and the Comanche lift off in the sky. To your side, you see a pair of Phrogs lifting off as well, carrying both the Umibozu, the EPD personnel, and the equipment they would need to safely dispose of the bioweapons.

As with most missions, everybody is rather quiet. The atmosphere is tense, and you'd rather not break radio silence if you could help it. Finally, you rendezvous with the Soryu and land on the deck along with the other helos.

"All right, kids, this is your last chance to take a piss before we leave." Bullseye says as he powers down the engines.

To your right, you can see the Umibozu and EPD guys stepping out of their landed Phrogs for some fresh air. To your left, your witches landed in special striker mounts to conserve energy, and ground crew handed them energy drinks to keep their magic topped off.

Or you guess you could make a call to Kelsey to get any updates on the situation.

You head over to the Soryu's communications room. This mission gave you temporary security to clearance to use it, so the guards let you through with only a cursory ID check. You sit down at one of the communication consoles, where a comm tech establishes a line between you and Kelsey's command center.

"Ah, Pierce, so I see you've made it to the Soryu." Kelsey says happily. "What can I help you with?"

"Well, I just want to get an update on local conditions." You say. "You hear of anything going on in the general area we're operating?"

"Let me see...." You hear Kelsey digging through files. "No, nothing out of the ordinary. You getting second thoughts?"

"Just being cautious." You laugh. "Also, do you happen to have any intel on where the White Butterfly might be?"

"Well.... we have reports of sightings of it up in northern China about an hour or two ago. Nothing concrete, though."

Damn, well, that meant WB showing up was a real possibility.

"Hey, do you know anything about the Epidemic Prevention Department?" You ask. Maybe Kelsey would know something about them.

"Ah... the EPD." Kelsey sighs. "Figured they'd be involved in this."

"What exactly are they?"

"The EPD is an IJA unit devoted specifically the research of biological and chemical weapons. Officially, they're supposed to be finding ways to cure or prevent the use of such weapons. But, unofficially, like everybody else, they do actual weapons research and production on the side."

"Anything I should know?"

"Not that I can tell you." Kelsey sighs. "Pretty much everything prior to the Martian War is sealed. The only way you can get access to that kind of clearance is an order from someone in the Royal Family."

"I see..." You frown. You guess you shouldn't be surprised. Nobody wanted to admit they were involved in bioweapon research "Anyways, thanks for the update, Colonel."

"Anytime."

You exit the the comm room just as the EPD personnel walk in. However, before you can say anything, they're already inside the room and slammed the door shut. Shrugging, you head back out to the flight deck.

"Yes." Tarin nods. "Is he here?"

"Yeah, he's with the Umibozu." You blink. "You didn't see him?"

"It's hard to tell with all the masks on." Tarin remarks.

Ah, that made sense.

"Well, come on." You wave her over. Tarin bends down and releases her strikers from their mounts and she hovers along behind you.

"Hey! Tokugawa!" You wave at him and his men. "So how are you guys all feeling?"

"Eager. Tense." Tokugawa nods, and then pales when he sees Tarin floating up behind you."

"Lieutenant Richards! It's an honor to see you again!" Tokugawa bows.

"It's nice to see you, too." Tarin nods. "How are things?"

"We've been well. No major casualties since you last left us." Tokugawa says, his head still bowed down.

"Good to hear." Tarin nods. "And... can you please stop the bowing? It's bit hard to talk to you like that."

"Apologies!" Tokugawa's head snaps back up.

"So why are you nervous around Tarin?" You asked, quietly amused at the thought of what might happen if you told them she was your girlfriend instead.

"I'm not sure if it is in my place to tell." Tokugawa say, looking at Tarin."

"I guess I can explain." Tarin shrugs. "Pre-war, you understand how the Chinese and Japanese never saw eye to eye, especially after China went red, right?"

"Of course." You nod.

"So, every so often, Japan likes to, erm 'check up' on China, to make sure they're not too powerful to challenge them or anything like that."

"Uh huh." You say, getting gist. Secret ops into China and all.

"So anyways, we have an op where we're supposed to sabotage a prototype Chinese ship to hamper their blue water capability. Tokugawa's guys got jumped by three witches intel didn't tell us about. One air and two tank. His guys were getting hit hard, so I came down and took care of them."

"You make it sound so easy." You frown.

"It is, when you do it one by one." Tarin says simply.

"We've been indebted to her ever since." Tokugawa says.

So, Tarin essentially had an entire Japanese SF force at her beck and call. You... you were very glad that it was a person like Tarin that had that sort of power.

"Hey Cap! Bullseye says our helos are fueled and ready to go! Tower keeps nagging us and they want us off the deck. Guess they got more birds incoming." Red announces through the radio.

"Got it." You turn to Tokugawa. "Good luck on your mission."

"And good luck on yours." Tokugawa nods to you respectively, and bows to Tarin as she leaves.

"Must be nice to have guys respecting you like that." You say to Tarin.

"Honestly, it's kinda of troublesome." Tarin frowns.

You just laugh all the way back to the Ghost Hawk.

"So, boss." Bullseye says as he powers up the Ghost Hawk's engines. "How do you want to get there? We can just shoot straight through. Between China's cruddy radar net and our stealth, we can make it there in no time. Or, we can take the same route the Umibozu's helos are taking, where their radar coverage is the weakest. Your call."

Well, if you took the shorter route, you'd get more time to do recon. Naturally, though, it was riskier than the shorter route...

"We'll take the short way." You say. "If we get spotted, then Christina is going to have a LOT to answer for."

"Got it." Bullseye grins as he opens up the throttle and the Ghost Hawk pushes through the air, the Comanche following close behind.

Very soon, you reach the Chinese coastline, and both your helos and your witches switch off their running lights, going only by instruments and nightvision. Even with stealth, you all fly as close to the ground as possible. No sense taking unnecessary risks, after all. Fortunately, nobody seems to spot you, and very soon you reach your target. The chemical plant was sitting right there, on top of a moderately tall hill. At the foot of the hill, you could see the twinkling lights of residential areas. You feel a pang of sympathy to whoever had to live down there. You were pretty sure they were not living downhill from a chemical plant by choice.

You all orbit the chemical factory continually, trying to discern any sort of defenses. However, you don't spot anything. Makes sense, since a facility like this would rely more on secrecy for protection.

"Any of you see anything?"

"No major heat or radar signatures." Ugly says. "If they got vehicles, they're either cold or super well hidden."

"I see movement on the roofs." Tarin says. "Probably guards."

"I see some concealed heavy guns, too." Janice says.

"Should we take care of them?" Euclid asks.

You all circle around the site for another ten minutes, until Ugly speaks up.

"Guys, I got movement on my scopes." You say.

"Have the Umibozu arrived?"

"No, too small and too many. I'm getting four small contacts. Witches, I think."

"Shit." You breathe. "Where are they?"

"Your two o' clock. About eight klicks away."

You look with your nightvision goggles on, and sure enough, you can see four green blobs flying in tight formation.

"Shit, do you think we were made?" You ask.

"No, it looks more like a routine patrol." Jetstream says. " But if they come any closer, there's no guarantee they won't see us or the Umibozu."

"What do we do?" Janice asks, flipping her rifle's safety off.

"There's a radar station not far from here." Janice points out helpfully. "If we attack it, it should provide an ample distraction to draw the witches away."

"Tarin, go mess up that radar station, but be careful not to be detected." You say. "I don't really want to see if you can take four witches at once."

"Roger." Tarin says as she breaks off fromthe group. Her image slowly fades out of existence as she goes invisible, and all you can do is wait.

A few minutes later, the flight of Chinese witches takes a sharp turn and blasts off toward the radar station at full speed. So far so good.

About six minutes later, you can hear the thumping of helicopter rotors as the Umibozu's Phrogs being to make their final approach at his point, the men on the roof of the chemical plant start getting suspicious, as their movements become faster and more frantic.

"Looks like the party's coming. Should we get started?" Ugly asks.

"Waste em." You say.

The quiet night are is suddenly disrupted as cannon fire rains from the sky. The Comanche shells the roof with its autocannon while Hoskins mans one of the mounted miniguns and starts strafing the roof as well. Janice, Jetstream, and Euclid, however, take careful, measure shots, picking off individual guards that the helos missed and knocking out gun emplacements. The Phrogs home in on your position, popping flares as they land in front of the chemical plant. Immediately, the Umibozu start flooding out of their transports and storm the building. "Just stay low and out of sight." You say. "If you see a chance to disengage, take it."

"Roger." Tarin whispers her affirmation.

You turn your attention back to the chemical plant. The Umibozu still haven't come out yet. What the hell was taking them so long? You try to raise them on the radio but you get nothing. The signals were probably being blocked by the building itself.

Meanwhile, Ugly breaks off to interdict what looks like a convoy of police vehicles. A quick burst of autocannon fire across their noses sends them scurrying back the way they came. While easily handled for now, it was only a matter of time before heavier reinforcements would come.

"We need medical assistance!" You hear Tokugawa yell. You look back down and you see the Umibozu filtering out of the factory. Tokugawa is waving at the air, as he's not totally sure where you are.

"Bullseye, set her down!" You yell.

"Got it." Bullseye nods and slows to a stop, quickly touching down on the parking lot next to the waiting Phrogs. Tokugawa is already there to meet you as you hop out with Red and Rex.

"What have you got?" You ask.

"Three casualties. Two with gunshot wounds and one with chemical burns." He responds.

"Got it." You nod to Rex and Red as they grab the necessary medical gear.

However, as you dash over to where the casualties are with Red and Rex, you see several Umibozu carrying large, sealed crates out of the building, under the direction of the EPD guys. That was... odd.

You decide to ignore it for now and head straight for the casualties. Immediately, you go into triage mode, scanning the three downed men. One man was gut shot. Serious, but no immediately life threatening. Another was shot a few times in the thigh. Potentially life threatening, especially any bones were broken or an artery was hit. The third man has serious chemical burns on his hands and face. Looked to be some sort of acid or something, but you couldn't be sure. You didn't know if you wanted to try and put any burn treatment on, because depending on the chemical, it could either help, do nothing, or just make things worse.

Otherwise the only thing we can do is send word up our own chain of command and have jetstream send some inquiries up the IJN chain, since the EPD is under IJA.

This is a Chinese chemical plant that he just waltzed through.

Do you HONESTLY believe they are going to post a WHIMIS label on their chemical processing? That would somehow identify the exact compound and treatment method if accidentally exposed?

It being a top secret research facility only makes things worse. If it is actually labelled, it might even be deliberately misleading or just plain scientifically abstract and incomprehensible for medical purposes.

tl;dr - Sic magic healing on the chem burns because magic doesn't have to explain shit, and deal with the physical injuries ourselves because they're conventional.

Meanwhile, you move to the man with the chemical burns while Rex tends to the man with the gut shot. You give the burned man a quick look, and without knowing for certain what was causing the burns, decide not to use any chemical treatments. Instead, you wash out the burned areas with water to get rid of any lingering traces of chemicals and wrap the burned areas in gauze to keep them clean. The doctors could handle the rest.

"Just keep up the covering fire until we get clear!" You yel.

"Roger." Janice nods and continues pouring fire into the incoming witches. The Chinese witches eventually break off and retreat, not wanting to stray too far from the area they were assigned to protect. Tarin also finally shows up.

"Welcome back, Tarin." You grin.

"It's good to be back." Tarin nods.

>And that's it for tonight! Next thread is next week, as always. Don't forget Gundam Build Fighters on Friday and Cyberpunk Idols on Saturday!
