Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you turned a corrupted monstrosity into a fine pink mist, discovered a secret, and pissed off the AI bent on world domination.

You push yourself into a seated position, running a hand wearily down your face. You're surprised to find you've been sweating, and your throat is horribly parched. You spare a glance towards the shadowy figure where it stands in the portal, its glowing mouth split into an impossibly wide grin. When you speak your voice comes out a dry rasp. “I get the feeling lots of things are her problem.” The figure nods sympathetically. “Women, am I right?” You squint at the figure, a delicate crystalline bowl materializing in your hand and filling itself with water. “Not... technically? She lacks those parts most vital to womanhood. Is there a point to this conversation?”

You feel the exasperation radiating off the figure more than anything else, its expression doesn't change in the slightest. You pointedly ignore it in favor of gulping down the water in your bowl. After who knows how long trapped in Fulvia's mind it taste like the sweetest nectar you've ever had the pleasure of drinking. “Of course there's a point, you sub-human ingrate. I brought you here for a reason. I knew you'd attempt to find a way to return home and that search would inevitably lead you here, where I could freely make my demands-” You interrupt sharply. “And those are? Come now, the time of this sub-human ingrate is valuable and I have appointments to keep.” Your grin mockingly, further infuriating the figure in the portal. The shimmering field that indicates the event horizon of the portal seems to bulge out and ripple in response to the figure's anger. “My demands are thus, in exchange for passage back to your world you will kill that vile witch where she resides in the wood. For generations her family have kept me tethered to this portal, a gate keeper to prevent any undesirables from passing into your world. I am tired of it.”

(1/2)
>>
Time to dive into a portal.
>>
The bowl in your hand melts away, slipping through your fingers and evaporating before it can hit the floor. You push yourself onto your feet and stretch yourself out luxuriously while you consider the figure's offer. “And should I refuse your demands?” The figure's grin falls, replaced by a scowl. “Should you spurn my offer, you may find yourself arriving at a destination you hadn't anticipated. The mines beneath Longia do not contain the only portal the Rhynians ever produced. In fact, there were many. I could drop you anywhere within the vastness of the former empire, sans all those new toys you've found since coming here.” You glare at the creature. “Why not simply deny me entry to the portal? As gate keeper it ought to be within your power.” The figure's scowl deepens. “You belong in your own world, to deny you entry would violate the demands of that vile witch.”

Pick Two
>Deny the figure's offer, take your chances with the portal.
>Accept the figure's offer, you're not willing to risk the weapons and gadgets you've bought here.

>Leave immediately, either through the portal or to find the witch.

Which is better the guns we bought in this dimension, or the rythain pistol we have/gun we could get from our merchant friend?

So its higher rate of fire VS Higher damage and magic synergy.

My forest brethren, hell has frozen over for our chance at exploration.
>>33987460
He probrably would have done one of these three.
1.Far away as possible.(maybe even different planet)
2.Dangerous as possible.(full of monster/toxic as all hell/underwater/in space)
3.A combo of the above
It would have been mine 2.0, but here is hoping we can fuck him over by talking to the witch.
>>
>>33987114
How could she/he take our loot from inside's Ricky dimension?
>>
>>33987573
Nah, that Anon is correct. Before the fall of the Hiacian Empire and the rise of the Shahdom, El-Amin was called first Azash, then Ataca under the Rhynians, and finally El-Amin after it was granted to the El-Amin dynasty by the Emperor.

>>33987630
You've no idea whether he would be able to or not. He implied that he could, but do you really trust an ominous shadowy figure that resides in a dimensional portal?
>>

That info is outdated, and he is planning on fixing it up.

>The Pa'vala, or Deep Desert, is the ancient homeland of your people. It is said it was once the heart of the Hiacian Empire.

Just going by that, it may have been that the Rhynians controlled the city which would become El-amin before their fall.

I just noticed:
As long as people have been putting pen to paper and recording history, the elves have been fighting in the mountains and valleys of their homeland. They fight over ear length, skin tone, language, accent, cuisine, art, sports, almost every aspect of culture is a point of contention the elves will commit genocide over. Oddly enough, they're rather tolerant of other races. They only seem to hate each other.

Reminds me of a certain screen cap that gets thrown around in "Best of /tg/" threads

from what we found out about him, he seems pretty chill and would help us grandmaster water(could take a detour to see him) or master nature if we asked.

>>
>>33987355
Isn't one of our concerns that this dimension will invade our own? Can't we ask the Gaurdian about closing the portal on this side?
>>
>>33987927
Seems like if he could, the witch would have had him do that instead of acting as a gate keeper.
>>
>>33987953
So the witch is either an AI or a spirit.
>>
You take a moment to think, a question occurring to you. “Does this society not wish to invade my world? Could you bar them from entering the portal were you freed?” The figure grimaces. “No, they would be allowed access just as you would. However, there are tools which exist in this dimension one might use to destroy this portal after you've passed through.” You consider this, and eventually nod your head. “Very well, creature. I'll accept your offer. Where does this witch reside?” The figure spreads its arms wide, a welcoming gesture. That unsettling grin once more graces its features. “Why, you ought to already know that. Deep within the center of the forest you will find the vile woman and the hut she dwells in.” The creature vanishes, taking the shimmering portal with it. The gem at the top of the gateway dims, as do the runes carved into its surface.

You turn sharply and make your way out of the room. Profectus has changed back into his Centurion Armor, and Chrys is once more wearing that strange armor, its make unfamiliar to you. They're both sitting on their chosen cots talking amongst themselves Fulvia is standing next to portal room's door with her arms folded in front of her chest, her projection still dropped. Her flowing, layered armor conceals much of her metallic body but the featureless face and the bulbous generator on her back are clear for all to see. She doesn't spare you a glance, or at least you don't think she does. It's not like she has eyes. Finally, Darzi is still fast asleep.

(1/2)
>>
You breeze past Fulvia on your way towards the cots, climbing to the top of the stairs and clapping your hands together loudly. “I've found a way through the portal!” You declare loudly, loud enough for the guards to hear. Profectus raises an eyebrow skeptically. “You were passed out not a minute ago, how did you find a way through so quickly?” You grin. “Allow me to explain, I spoke to the shadowy figure that dwells within the portal. It is apparently some sort of gate keeper, a guardian. However, it is not there of its own free will, but rather trapped by a vile witch who resides in the forest. If we will kill this witch and free him from his bondage he will allow us through the portal.” Chrys speaks once you've finished. “Are you sure releasing the ancient, unknowable figure that dwells between dimensions is a good idea?” You shake your head brusquely. “Absolutely not! However, I intend to do it anyway.”

You whip around to face the nearest guard. “Contact the Admiral. Tell him I'll need transport into the forest and a contingent of guards. A guide would also be required, Skull Kid will do. He's explored the forest extensively and in addition I know and trust the man.” The guard hesitates but eventually reaches up to a button on his neck and presumably says something, though you don't hear it. Eventually he presses a button adjacent that one and speaks. “The Admiral will gather the requested soldiers and vehicles, you'll be able to leave at dawn. He says he is sure you'll understand if certain precautions must be taken.”

A note of wariness enters your voice. “What sort of precautions?” The guard responds promptly, as if reciting off a list. “The Admiral cannot spare a large enough contingent of guards to properly discourage an escape attempt, so in exchange for the temporary release of a dangerous criminal like Thaddeus Humboldt-” That name makes you cringe every time you hear it, it's just so... odd, to your ears. He's Skull Kid, that is his identity. It seems disrespectful to refer to him as anything else. “-the Admiral must insist that he wear a standard issue Motivation Collar for the duration of this foray into the woods.”

You glare at the guard. “What on Earth is a 'Motivation Collar'?” He clears his throat uncomfortably. “It is a piece of equipment given to our contracted laborers. It delivers a gentle shock should they become unruly or slack off in their duties. In severe cases the voltage may be raised to a lethal level, but that is only if the laborers grow violent.” You scowl. “So essentially what you're saying is that if I wish to make good on my promise to the Admiral and activate this forsaken portal, he's going to string me along by the nose using my friend's life as a bargaining chip? That hardly seems fair.” The guard simply shakes his head. “It is not my duty to say what is fair or unfair, if you have issue with the High Admiral's demands you may take it up with the High Admiral himself.”

>Fine, you'll agree. After all it's not like they're putting a collar on you.
>No, Skull Kid deserves better than that. He'll either release your companion and the portal will be opened or he can spend the rest of his life pounding his head against a wall trying to unlock its secrets.

“What did my companion even do to make himself so reviled? He has been nothing but kind since the moment I met him.” The guard once more begins reciting from some mental list. “Thirteen charges of bank robbery, sixty-three counts of murder, one alleged rape, four accounts of domestic terrorism, extortion, money laundering, drug running... he has a long criminal history and he was only spared the death penalty because he turned state's witness.” You quirk an eyebrow. “What does turning state's witness entail? Could he not simply do so again?” You think you hear the guard chuckle, but you might be imagining things. “Turning state's witness means he informed on his former compatriots, providing information that eventually lead to their arrest.”

Well, you'd had an idea that he wasn't the most upstanding of citizens but that goes quite beyond what you'd expected. No wonder he seemed so comfortable during the hostage situation, it was probably just another day on the job for him. You consider the Admiral's offer for a short while before eventually nodding your head. It feels wrong to agree to this on your friend's behalf, but you don't exactly have a choice. You have to get to the forest and you don't want to just leave him to rot in some cell. “Fine, I'll agree to the Admiral's terms. How long do we have until dawn?” The guard hesitates before responding. “Ten hours, it's almost eight in the evening currently.”

That gives you plenty of time to meditate or read, as you please. You turn back to your companions. “You heard the man. Do what you need to in order to prepare yourselves, get a good night's rest. We leave at the crack of dawn.” Chrys simply nods, though Profectus grumbles something about it being too damn early in the morning to venture into a haunted forest. Darzi is still fast asleep, perhaps you ought to wake her up, she's missed quite a lot. There's also the issue of Fulvia to deal with. She seems quite upset with you...

You glance over your shoulder at Fulvia, who remains standing stock still by the door to the portal room, before turning your attention once more to your other companions. “I believe I need to have a discussion with our artificial companion, if you'll excuse me.” You don't wait for an answer, turning on your heels and marching down the steps. A wave of apprehension washes over you as you approach her, clearing your throat softly when you stand before her. As you open your mouth to speak she cuts you off. “I am currently devoting my full attention to clearing out the remnants of corruption which dwell within the corners of my mind. I would not wish to further risk your safety by allowing it to take root once more.”

You have a feeling what she really means is that she doesn't want to risk exposing further secrets to you by dragging you into her mind again. Well, you can't really blame her. “Fulvia, I want to apologize for violating your trust as I have but we really must discuss what I saw in that chamber.” You speak quietly, so as to avoid being overheard by the others. You have the feeling that if she was projecting her human appearance right now she would be seething, but she refuses to utter a word. You knit your brows together. “Fulvia, I know for a fact that the corruption cannot truly require the whole of your focus. In addition to killing the Broodmother I poisoned the hive itself. It ought to be a simple task to exterminate what little resistance remains.”

She still refuses to respond. Gods above, you'd forgotten how much the silent treatment annoyed you. Your younger sister used to do this all the damned time, whenever you and your brother would return home after sneaking off without her. You suppose you could push on and try to convince her to at least engage you, but then again that might just further anger her...

You dig deep, ripping away the last vestiges of your power and using it to sharpen your dulled wits and alleviate the pain in your joints. Being this low on vys always makes you feel terrible, it's like your very soul has been stripped away leaving you a hollow shell. You want nothing more than to lay down and close your eyes, drift away into blissful sleep... but you force yourself to ignore those urges. There is yet more you have to do before you will be allowed to rest. Such is the life of a Vatis.

“Listen, Fulvia. You're understandably upset. I would be too, were I in your position. I don't expect you to forgive me nor do I ask you to, all I want is to talk. I do not think any less of you for what I saw, to be honest I barely understand it.” You keep your tone even and neutral, making sure to choose your woods carefully. When she still refuses to say a word you sigh wearily. “Will you at least agree to consider my request? I do not want this to mark the end of our friendship.” Finally, she relents. She speaks slowly, as if begrudging every word. “I will come to you when I am ready to explain what you saw. Now, I ask that you leave me so that I may concentrate.”

You can tell that's the best you can hope to get from her at the moment. You bow politely and then slip past her into the portal chamber. It sits much as you left it, inactive. As drained as you are the air in this room almost seems electrified, like just being near an artifact of such power is refilling your reserves. It's unbelievably refreshing, and you assume a meditative pose just in front of the portal itself. You lean forward, propping your elbows on your knees and staring at the runes carved into the gateway while you consider your options.

What will you meditate on?

AOE allows you to make a spell Area of Attack. Certain spells, like Fireball (Ranged+Fire) are already area of attack by nature, but using this meta in addition would expand the range without reducing the damage. It can also be used with Paralysis and Poison to affect a large number of targets with one spell, but keep in mind that an AOE spell does not distinguish between ally and enemy.

>Incubate the Egg (Special)

what about leaping?
>>
>>33990026
Oh, and leaping allows you to cast a spell targeting one person and then, as soon as the spell hits, immediately send it hurtling towards another target. With good rolls you can hit up to five targets with a single spell. The downside to this is that it's very expensive and you have to roll for each 'jump' so to speak. Some spells synergize with the leaping meta better than others.
>>
>>33990072
>keep in mind that an AOE spell does not distinguish between ally and enemy.

You contact Chrys via the brooches. {Could you bring the egg in here? I wish to meditate. The bedding off of my cot as well, I'll need material to burn.} There is no response, but a few moments later the door slides open and Chryssa walks in with the egg swaddled in her arms. She lays it down gently in front of you and pushes the blanket into a roughly nest-like shape. You nod your head in thanks.

Before she leaves she glances briefly around the room and then crouches down next to you, leaning close to whisper in your ear. “We are being monitored, even when there is no one else in the room. When we were being escorted up to this room I caught a glimpse of a room filled with monitors and heard you muttering to yourself about journals.” You scowl, nodding your head. That means they might have heard what you said to the figure earlier, although if you recall correctly the shadow affects listening equipment in odd ways. The audio in that recording you saw earlier was spotty at best, and you couldn't hear a word of what the figure was saying.

You expect that to be the end of it, but she continues. “I also saw something worth noting. There was a generator room near the base of a tower that I managed to get a glimpse inside of. The technology they're using to power the city is startlingly similar to the Rhynian Generator we found in the ruins north of Licae. I believe it might be a recovered artifact.” Her message apparently delivered, she stands up. She flicks the top of your ear before making her way to the exit, causing it to twitch involuntarily. She's seemed uncharacteristically cheerful ever since they escorted her up her. Frankly, it's a little disconcerting.

You push the growing sense of paranoia from your mind and slip into a meditative trance. It's probably just your lack of vys making you delusional, once you've refilled your reserves you ought to feel much better. As the world melts away you find yourself sitting in a veritable lake of vys. Frankly, the atmosphere is so saturated it would be more difficult to avoid absorbing vys than to draw it into your reserves. You bask in the energy, savoring the sensation of power flowing into your reserves. It's like a part of you that was missing has finally been found. You're not even sure how you'd lived in a world as drearily empty as this for so long.

As you refill your reserves you start to notice a thin tendril of vys that glows just a tad brighter than the rest of the room. It connects to the gem at the top of the gateway, and seems to stretch out towards the distant glow of that miniature sun deep within the forest. It must be the same tendril you saw from your hotel room when you meditated there. This close, it sort of reminds you of a leeching spell. Except it seems to only be drawing a very minuscule amount of power, and is putting just as much in as it takes out. Perhaps some sort of esoteric enchantment you've never heard of?

It occurs to you that you have all the knowledge you would need to reach out and connect yourself to the tendril, to see what it might be doing. A dangerous proposition, of course. It might even kill you, though you doubt that. On the other hand, you might learn something about enchanting or about some spell ancient Rhynian spell, or even about the Witch you're supposed to be visiting come dawn.

You mentally reach out towards the tendril, finding it surprisingly easy. As your mind makes contact with the tendril you feel yourself drawn into it, the world fades away until you're standing in field of black not unlike the inside of your cloak. Unfortunately there is no friendly monstrosity from the void here to greet you. On one side of you there is a woman, her face obscured by a mask. Long brown hair cascades past her breast and a wolf's pelt is draped over her shoulders. She wields a sword, the blade a strange golden material and the cross guard shaped vaguely like a human skull, the blade itself emerging from its mouth. She wears robes reminiscent of the robes Fulvia's projection was wearing when you first saw her in the midst of the ruin, save much rattier.

The mask itself is a curious thing. It sort of reminds you or a rabbit, an odd rune etched into its forehead and long horns mimicking the ears. The mask itself is red, while the eyes are black as the void surrounding you. It grins a snaggletoothed grin, and it might just be your imagination but you could swear that five other figures seem to dance around the woman, their clawed hands reaching towards her.

The other figure in the room you're quite familiar with. It's the shadowy figure that seems to dwell in the portal. It appears as though you've caught the tail end of a conversation. “-someday, witch. Might be sooner than you'd think.” The woman's voice barks forth with surprising violence. “Quiet, cur! We've company.” She extends her hand towards you without sparing you a glance, some sort of necklace clasp tightly in her fist. “Is this the man you send to kill me?” The shadow whips around to face you, an irritated hiss escaping its jagged maw. Before it can speak the woman addresses you, once more without actually looking at you. Her voice is notably gentler than it was just a moment ago.

(1/2)
>>
I wonder how many "Chryssa was here" tag she put in this world.
>>
“Tell me, traveler. Why would you willingly do this degenerate wretch's bidding? Are you an idiot, or do you simply lack the moral fortitude to stand up to such a creature?” As she speaks her voice seems to fluctuate, sometimes it seems as though two or three people are mimicking her words simultaneously, other times it is her voice and her voice alone. You must admit, it sets you on edge. The woman wields artifacts completely alien to you...

“Γεια σου; καμήλα πόρνη;”
He slaps you in the back of the head, sending you falling forward. The ground gives way and you tumble through blackness. As Surya grows ever more distant, his voice booms forth once more in that strange tongue.
“Μιλάτε νότιο; Γιατί κοιμάσαι σε ένα παλιό φρούριο;”
As you think you're about to hit whatever serves for the ground in this plane of endless blackness, you jolt awake. Someone is prodding you in the back. They haven't killed you yet, so they're probably not a bandit. You're also laying on your left side, obscuring the brand on your cheek. They might not realize you're one of the Aghtaki.

“Look, I neither know nor do I care what either of you are; though I think I can hazard a guess. All I want is to go home, it has been my sole objective since I came to this world. Whatever your goals are, however selfish or noble, they don't matter one whit to me. The only thing I care about is whether or not you can get me out of this shithole.” The woman turns to look at you for the first time since you entered this strange void. Her voice is furious. “If you wish so badly to leave simply step through the portal! It is not barred to those from the homeworld, and if this idiot told you otherwise simply say the word and I'll flay him alive here and now!”

You sigh in exasperation. “He didn't tell me I was barred entry, in fact he said he was incapable of doing so, but he threatened to rob me of any wares I might have bought while I was in this dimension and then to deposit me somewhere other than where I left.” The woman waves a hand dismissively. “The portal will remove any materials not native to the homeworld from your person, but I don't see how this is an issue. You've a portal to the void draped over your shoulders. You ought to be able to easily avoid any of your goods being molested. If you'll tell me which gate you entered through I can program this gate to take you there, but I will not have you allowing an army of these barbaric idiots charging into glorious Rhynia.”

(1/2)
>>
Well, that answers a few questions; however, it's concerning that she doesn't seem to know that Rhynia fell a millennia ago. You suppose that not many people would make the journey across dimensions just to inform some backwater garrison that the empire fell but one would certainly think that after who knows how many generations on this planet they'd figure it out for themselves.

This "witch" could be the person who created the gates and traped the figure in the gate. and possibly bless some magic on to. the witch is over 1000 years old so that must have left her plenty of time to brush up and magic and what not.

This witch isn't the same one who originally trapped the spirit in the portal. It said that there have been several generations of witches keeping him contained.

Shit you're right.

He could be lying to make them seem more hostile.
>>
>>33994475
In that case we should ask where she could send us.

I think time just moves slow in this dimension.

Did we leave any gear behind?
Also i'm sure we can go pick him up, he did cost us a pretty penny.

We didn't leave any gear behind, it's all in our cloak, and unless time moves really fast in this dimension, Al gasreed is either dead or ran away.

NO
I won't believe you till I see a body!
>>
So you're obviously telling her that the empire fell.

I'm taking these as votes not to tell her which gate you came through. Anyway, final destination style vote.

Vote
1
To tell her you came through the mines.

Vote
2
To see how she reacts to the news of Rhynia's collapse.

Now you see why telling her about the mine might not be a good idea, unless you guys want to mediate at the lake or go golem hunting and hope not to run into dragons/ cultist.

I also think that this place is actually another planet. The witch said called our dimension the home world we found a map of the solar system in the ruins at Licae

But then why would our world have magic and this one not, unless there was a basic difference in the laws of physics?
Also, lets not rule out the possibility that the Rhynians were both dimension hoppers and space explorers.
