Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you made plans to murder a witch, began to make amends for violating a friend's trust, and then spoke to the witch you planned to murder.

You never thought you would have to give this speech twice. You speak solemnly, choosing your words with care. “The Rhynian Empire fell more than a thousand years ago, vanished off the face of the Earth due to plague and internal warring. All that remains are a hundred petty kingdoms fighting over what little technology survived.” The woman reels back, almost as if struck. “What do you... mean it fell? Surely there are some remnants, somewhere. Right? They wouldn't leave my family here to rot...” Her voice suddenly sounds very small, the ethereal voices no longer mimicking her speech but rather muttering, as if to one another. “Do you know what I've had to go through to protect this portal? What my mother and her mother sacrificed?”

You raise your hands in what you hope is a placating gesture, this seems as though a delicate situation. A spell caster wielding artifacts of untold power being emotionally compromised is never a good thing. “The Empire is dead but certain precautions were taken to insure that it one day rose again. Among my companions I have an AI manufactured before the fall, she knows the locations of certain mass storage facilities where other remnants like her remain. She intends to bring back the golden age of the Empire, by fire and sword if she must. In my retinue I have also a Rhynian soldier and a woman who may have been an experiment conducted by the Rhynians.”
(1/2)
>>
The woman looks up abruptly, staring at you for a moment. “If that is the case I will come with you, to aid you in your efforts to restore the empire. It will only take me a few hours to prepare, and I have stockpiled plastic explosive just in case I decided to one day leave this world. I have hidden routes into the city that I may use to sneak in...” Her voice sounds determined, and perhaps just a tad crazed. She seems quite set on this course. You really would've preferred she at least broach the subject with you before making up her mind.

>Well, you can't really just deny her, can you? Tell her to surrender when you come hunting her and then promise to help activate the portal.
>You hadn't really intended on bringing a crazy Rhynian leftover back with you. Try to politely turn her down.

Ask if she has another portal in the forest we could use to leave, otherwise we'll have to go back to the city ect ect, and they'll be sending guards with us into the forest, not our choice.

Either way party grows, fuck that shadow dude, this lady is cool.

Well, why not? What's one more Rhynian going to do to hurt?
I also have a feeling the series of books we will write about our adventures will be the Dante's Divine Comedy of our world

(I bet Soma was hoping this would happen with the witch. And I'm ok with that.)
>>
Guys, our party is seriously getting too large. With the additions of Skull Kid and the Witch we're going to be at 7 party members.

Those fools have no sense of what it really means to be an adventurer.
>>
>>33996166
It's the perfect number.
>>
>>33996166
Well, Darzi will be leaving. That will put us at 6. I also get the feeling the Fulvia will take some alone time and head for Aleamond, to start restoring the empire. She'd probably take the Witch with her. That leaves us with 4. Chrys, Prof, Skull Kid, and us.
>>

Its gonna get bigger and you're gonna like it
>>
>>33996195
I'd like for Darzi to stay.

>>
>>33996220
I'd like Darzi to stay too but I don't think Darzi is going to want to stay.
>>
>>33996195
I actually hope Darzi or the Witch will stay with us. It's kinda hard being both the main assaulter and healer of the party.
>>
>>33996166
Eh, Soma is probably going to start killing them off or making them leave the party.
Also, witch isn't confirmed to be in the party yet, even though she is best companion.
>>
Can we at least heal Darzi's burn scars and tell her it's all gonna be alright before she leaves the party?

Chryssa Fulvia Darzi Witch and maybe Shadowdoorman

Space may have been their first thought.

>>33997224
Yeah, dude. That was mentioned a while ago when we were given backstory about this universe.

>SAM, that's Space, Air, Medical was the only corp to escape with most of its holdings unscathed, but that was only because SAM had most of its facilities in orbit. They were also pretty well equipped to handle treating victims of the war. I was in their employ.”

>“So after the bombs started falling, SAM sent down scouting parties to investigate the wreckage. We found ourselves assaulted on all sides by corp remnants, clinging to what remained of their ideologies. Ended up SAM needed to launch a full scale invasion of the surface, and their very first stronghold is the City I see glowing on the horizon every damn evening. Ruling the world isn't good for any sort of people. Power tends to drive them mad, you see. As the last bastion of civilization and hope, SAM converted itself into the monstrosity that is The City. It abandoned its crusade and consolidated its power base. These towers? Old outpost set up by SAM, abandoned after they decided to just city in their god damned Ivory Tower and herd sheep.”

“Actually, if you wish to come with me there is an easier way. I've made an arrangement with the ruler of this city, or at the very least a powerful official, to go hunting for you come the morning. If you surrendered when we came to kill you and then offered to help activate the portal when they questioned you they would likely allow you to aid us, thus eliminating the need to sneak in.” The pauses, considering this for a moment. “Yes, yes I believe that plan will work. Very well, when you enter the forest I will arrange a mock battle to take place, at the end of which I will surrender to your custody. Unfortunately I do not have a tool such as your cloak, so I will need to arrange things such that the soldiers raid my humble abode and confiscate my possessions...” She trails off, mumbling to herself.

You clear your throat gently to get her attention. “I have met a staunch friend and loyal ally since I came to this dimension and I wondered if he might be able to accompany me through the portal. Have you any-” The shadow interrupts, screeching. “You're siding with that which?! We had a deal, you sub-human bastard we had a deal!” The witch absentmindedly waves a hand and the shadow vanishes. The world seems to shift so that you are arranged directly across from the which. She gestures for you to continue. “Will he be a problem? Any chance that he may expose our plans?” She waves you off. “No, he may hate me but he's still bound to my will. The fact he even managed to contract you to kill me in the first place is cause for concern but I do not think that the enchantment has deteriorated to the point that he could inform on me to the Rhynians. If it had, he would've done so long ago.”

(1/???)
>>
>>33997863
How the fuck does the fem-mummy still have tits? Did they cut out the meat and stuff them with sand when they were embalming her or something?
>>
You're not convinced, but you press on anyway. “Well... As I was saying, have you any idea if he would be able to safely traverse the portal, should he wish to do so?” She responds solemnly. “Unless he has Rhynian ancestry it is unlikely the portal would permit him entry, and to disable that safeguard would allow these barbarians to march an army into... well, whatever remains.”

You deflate. “Is there no way for him to pass through?” She folds her arms in front of her chest, leaning her weight on one foot. “You may be able to smuggle him through in your cloak, however the void is a dangerous place. Spending any time at all inside is ill-advised at best. Frankly, I'm astonished something hasn't reached through that cloak of yours and ripped out your spine. Not to mention that we have no way of knowing how he would react to being in a world filled with magical energy.” The world starts to fade away, slowly. “You'll have to excuse me, there is much to prepare. I will see you on the morrow.”

With that, you're once more in the land of the living. You've been forced out of your meditative trance, but that's hardly an issue. You hadn't started meditating properly yet. You take a moment to collect your thoughts after that... experience. You've traded one ally for another and perhaps gained a new companion, all in the space of a single conversation. It takes quite a while to clear your head enough to once more slip into your trance. Fortunately you manage, and it takes naught but a thought to ignite the bedding around the egg. The smoke drifts lazily upwards, vents in the ceiling kicking on to filter it out.
(2/???)
>>
>>33997992
Their feet are still intact, so maybe the rest is as well.
>>
Last time you meditated you were able to produce a lot more power for less, and the time before that you were able to control the flames much better than usual. This time as that foreign presence enters your mind it seems to be leaving behind the information necessary to link those two concepts. You urge the flames to roar upwards but instead of trying to strictly control the flames to prevent them from getting out of hand you focus your energies on responding to threats as they arise. It's a much more efficient method, and it's much more effective as well. It's impossible to control an element as wild as fire entirely but so long as you prevent it from getting entirely out of hand that's still a job well done.

It proves slightly more draining than you'd anticipate, and you find yourself actually needing to spend vys to keep the flames going. However, as your understanding of Fire increases the loss seems irrelevant.
>Congratulations! You've reached Expert rank in the Fire element!
>Vys Pool: (29/30)

As you try to withdraw from your meditative trance a force latches onto you. From the vys that saturates the room an eye begins to weave itself. Blood vessels and fat deposits frame a blood-shot, shifting eye. The Iris seems to rapidly shift between colors, unable to decide on one of the other. You're struck by a wave of emotions. Confusion, fondness, disapproval, pride... You get the vague impression that it thinks of you as a 'parent' of sorts yet simultaneously thinks of you as a sibling. You've spent more than a dozen hours sitting in front of it, incubating it, but you're still not powerful enough to be a 'real' dragon. Still, it's progress.

(3/4)
>>
The eye vanishes, and you're forced from your meditation. You find yourself sitting before the inactive portal, the egg glowing softly in a pile of ashes just in front of you. On instinct you reach out and place a hand against it. Heat radiates off of it, but you get the feeling it's an internal heat rather than the result of the flame. These sessions incubating the egg have been good for it.

You're relieved to see that the shadowy figure has not been waiting to assault you with a barrage of insults since the moment the Witch forcefully ejected him from the conversation. You push yourself up and stretch some of the stiffness from your joints. A glance outside reveals that it is pitch black, you probably still have several hours until dawn.

You take a moment to admire the city sprawled out before you. It's almost hard to imagine that you're watching millions of people going about their lives, each twinkling light representing a person living their own life from their own perspective. You wonder if it is only some twist of fate that you were born in Pidjata to a noble lineage, and not in one of The City's slums. Unfortunately you have little time for contemplation. There are yet still things you must do before the dawn.

You leave the portal room and pass into the foyer. The guards continue to stand vigil, watching your party carefully. Fulvia, in turn, watches them. She stands in front of the stairwell with her arms crossed in front of her, her projection still down. She nods to you as you enter. “You have been meditating for approximately eight hours. two remain until sunrise.” She doesn't say any more than that, but she's actually speaking to you now. You're not sure if it was because you apologized or if it's simply because she's had time to cool her head, but it's nice nonetheless.

She steps aside to allow you up to the raised platform where the bank of monitors and the cots are arranged. You find Profectus snoring loudly, and Darzi absentmindedly flipping through the Five Effects. She looks up at the sound of your footsteps and nods politely in greeting, a smile on her face for the first time since you entered this damned tower. It's good to see her feeling better. Chryssa is sitting on the floor next to one of the cots, her legs folded beneath her and her hands concealed within her sleeves. Her eyes are closed, and she is humming softly. She seems completely oblivious to the world around her.
(1/2)
>>
Seems you've caught her meditating. This is a minor inconvenience, but nothing major. You've still got two hours until you need to leave, which leaves you time to discuss her recent behavior once she finishes meditating. Then again, you could always give her a firm shake. That ought to be enough to interrupt her concentration and drag her back into the waking world.

>Wake her up, you need to make sure she hasn't been drugged, or replaced, or somehow bribed, or brainwashed...
>Leave her to her meditations, lay down on one of these horribly uncomfortable looking cots and read for a while.

I've got a theory. Imagine if you were an incredibly gifted artist, who was literally born to paint or to play music; like a Beethoven or something. But you were born into a society with no pianos or no paint. And then you lived 20 or so years of your life that way, just missing a part of yourself. There are a few details that ya'all should look at when considering Chrys. She likes using Vys, as evidence by her glee during the tunnel fight. She also has a massive Vys pool and more than average apptitude for it. Lastly, she's physically and biologically alive only because of magic. I hope I'm going the right way with this.
>>
>>33999357
I'm pretty sure we're physicaly strong for a vatis, with all the fighting we've done already but yeah we're pretty weak as an adventurer I'd say. Might ask Soma that at the end of the thread.

Create+metal would produce a metal of your choosing, with heavier metals requiring more vys to create. You also must know that the metal exist, what it looks like, what it's composed of, et cetera. Thus, you could make iron, but not steel. Lead, but not uranium. Create in general is also an extremely costly effect.

>>
>>34000711
Her people were at war with "our" people.
She may not have any use for us once she gets her hands on fulvia.
She may just not have any need for us.
Plenty of other reasons but those come up the fastest.
>>
You pause, considering the egg in the other room. In front of a portal. A portal guarded by an inter-dimensional entity which currently hates your guts for betraying it in favor of the very woman he wanted you to kill. You stare blankly ahead for a few moments as the gears fall into place.

Darzi looks at you oddly as you turn sharply on your heels and march briskly back to the doorway. You practically shove Fulvia aside to get past her. When you enter the portal room you're relieved to see the egg sitting there in its bed of ashes, as of yet untouched. You approach the portal cautiously, just waiting for that accursed shadow to leap out and try to snatch your egg. Fortunately he doesn't seem to be interested and you reach the egg without incident.

You crouch, and wrap your arms around the rotund base. It takes significant effort but you manage to lift the massive thing off of the floor. You stumble a few times, and very nearly drop the egg. You manage to haul the damned thing out of the portal room and up the stairs to the raised platform where the cots rest. You lower it carefully one of the cots and then collapse next to it, your back killing you. Maybe you're just lifting it wrong, or something. Your sister always used to say there was a certain form to lifting things.

You have no desire to move the egg of the cot so you try scrunching up on just the top half of the cot. The proves uncomfortable, so you try a few other positions. You end up on your side, your legs curled around one side of the egg. The heat radiating off the thing actually proves rather convenient since you burned your blanket when you were incubating the egg.

(1/5)
>>
Finally settled in, you dig into your cloak and withdraw the Ritual Book of Surya. It seems a lifetime ago that you found this book in the ancient temple, abandoned there after the priest fled the encroaching Rhynian army. You're surprised it's survived all these years, and in such good shape too. It must be because the temple was so dry, the lack of humidity preventing rot eating away the papers. The cover is leather and branded with the face of Surya on both the front and back. You flip open the first few pages and begin to read through it.

You'd forgotten just how dense this book was. Flipping through the first three chapters to refresh your memory you find it's mostly composed of star charts, arcane formulas, and discussion of which sacrifices are more pleasing to Surya than others. It seemed to be generally agreed upon at the time this book was written that Rhynian soldiers truly made the best sacrifices, and that the red star Yod reaching its zenith indicated the optimal time to sacrifice humans, but it was better to sacrifice elves when Yod was descending in the night sky.

Frankly, all of this is foreign to you. The sacrifice of sentient beings has been banned in Pidjata for centuries now, and astrology fell into irrelevance far earlier than that. Still, it's interesting to see that the rituals your people still practice do have their roots in this sort of tradition. The month when Yod is at its zenith is still a month of celebration and sacrifice to Surya. You'd been lead to believe that it was because Yod is at its zenith during the hottest month on the calender and people were begging Surya for mercy, but you suppose that must be some kind of misconception.
(2/5)
>>
Finally you feel sufficiently caught up to launch into new material. The chapter you left off on was discussing common methods of prayer, and focused on the ritualistic marking of the supplicant with hot ash. Most of the chapter was given over to illustrations of the proper symbols, but there was also a long chapter about how one should evoke the god's blessing. Primarily it seemed to involve debasing oneself as weak and unworthy of Surya's blessing, an odd strategy if one wishes to appease the god of warriors, fire, and conquest as far as you're concerned.

The fourth chapter seems to discuss ways to atone for slights against the Font from which All Magic Flows, as the priest have dubbed Surya. Should one free from a battle they ought to thrust their hands into an open flame and beg Surya to grant them the iron will necessary to smite the enemy at their next meeting. If one should balk before a challenge they must brand themselves on the right buttock to, as the writer puts it, “light a fire under their cowardly asses”. Frankly, it seems devoted to brutalizing oneself to make up for some perceived slight against a deity that tried to wipe out your race anyway. Maybe it's simply because you were raised a devoted follower of Pani, but all of this just seems ridiculous.

You skip through the rest of that chapter, lacking any desire to read further into what punishments ought to be self inflicted if one should do or fail to do some action or another. The fifth chapter is far more relevant to your interest. It is literally titled 'Meditation Methods for Aspiring Priest'. The first method mentioned relates to what the author has dubbed the 'Flame Dance'. One ought to light a small fire and then attempt to manipulate the flames into elaborate, arcing, twisting maneuvers. If done properly it should resemble the twisting body of a street performer in the midst of her work.

(3/4, I lied)
>>
Another method, called 'Mirage', strikes you as particularly interesting. It is labeled as a method reserved only for the most advanced of pupils. By manipulating the ambient heat, increasing it in some areas and decreasing it in others, one should be able to bend the light in such a way as to create an illusion. It is said that those who practice this art extensively are able to create almost realistic depictions of people, animals, and objects.
>Ritual Book of Surya: 5/16 read)

You're just getting into another method, labeled 'Air Burst', when you hear the subtle humming that had marked Chryssa's meditation cut off. You glance up to see her stretching out her back, rolling her shoulders, and generally loosening her joints after sitting so long in a single position. You remove a strip of cloth from your cloak and lay it across your page, carefully folding the book and placing it back into your cloak before swinging your legs over the side of the cot. Your companions haven't much changed since you started reading. Darzi has dozed off with the book you loaned her still open on her abdomen. Profectus continues to snore away. Fulvia watches the guards warily. You'll need to decide how you want to broach the subject of Chryssa's recent behavior...

You consider for a moment how to open this conversation. In the end you decide to just get to the point. After all, her culture appreciates bluntness. {Are you feeling okay, Chrys?} You decide to use the brooches, it wouldn't be proper to hold this conversation out in the open and according to Chrys most of the rooms are monitored. She turns her attention to you with a vaguely curious expression. {I have felt fine. What gave you cause for concern?} You consider how to word what you're about to say for a moment, but in then end just decide to launch into it. {You've been acting oddly since we came to this dimension. For lack of a better word, happier. More emotional.}

{Is it a crime to be happy?} You wince, but she doesn't actually sound angry. More amused than anything else. {No, but usually you're not so... showy about your happiness.} There is a pause before Chrys answers. {I think it's simply because I'm realizing how much I enjoy using magic. Every time I meditate I feel myself growing stronger, every time I cast a spell I realize I am bending the laws of the universe by my will alone. It's a very... enjoyable sensation. I also think that being inundated with corrupted vys may have knocked something loose, so to speak. Plus I've been traveling with you for several weeks now, and unlike those within my own culture you're rather open about your emotions... there are several reasons for the shift, I think.}

(1/3)
>>
You consider that for a moment. It makes sense that she would start to acclimate after being surrounded by cultures drastically different than her own. You certainly wouldn't expect her to make a full turn around and become all bubbly and cheerful, but more relaxed certainly. That still doesn't explain why she's been so much more touchy lately though. When you'd first met her, just a hand on the shoulder was cause for scandal. {Why flick my ear though? That was just... odd, coming from you. My mother used to do it when I was being a brat and my master used to do it when I disappointed him in some way or asked stupid questions.} Chryssa coughs into a closed fist, a tinge of red coloring her cheeks. {Darzi told me it was a sign of affection amongst your people.} You scrunch your brows together. {I suppose in the right context it can be, but usually it's a scolding gesture. What else did Darzi tell you?} She's definitely blushing now. Your curiosity is killing you. The response is immediate and fervent. {Womanly things, gossip. Don't concern yourself with it.}

That does nothing to alleviate your curiosity, but you let the matter drop. Still, you're fairly satisfied that Chrys hasn't been replaced with some sort of robot, or brainwashed somehow. She seems herself, if a slightly more relaxed version of herself. You stand up, and stretch. Just as you do so an alarm sounds and the door slams open. A guard, dressed similarly to the others but missing his helmet, strolls cockily into the room and glances at you and your companions. Profectus has bolted up right, bleary eyed and half-asleep. Darzi actually fell out of her bed when the alarm went off. You're sitting calmly on the edge of your cot while Chrys and Fulvia are entirely nonplussed. The guard simply nods.

“You're to report to the garage for a expedition into the forest. We'll be leaving through the Green District, so it ought to be a peaceful ride until we hit the woods. Hop to it, then.” You glance at your companions. Darzi has laid her armor on the ground and is climbing into the hollowed out section reserved for her. She's apparently figured out a way to manage it without needing to remove the flowing garments your people prefer. Profectus is just rubbing sleep from his eyes, he's still wearing his armor and has his falcata attached to his hip. Fulvia and Chrys are ready as ever. You'll need to figure out what to do with your egg...

Not very emotional, comes from a culture where decapitating your enemies is the norm, going to die young, when we're biologically immortal.

So I've had this idea kicking around in my head for awhile and I wanted to get your guys thoughts on it. We're going to have a metric fuck ton of money once we get done selling our wares from adventuring, but we're not really doing anything with it. What I purpose is that once we get back to the academy we reinvest it into our war game and actually build an enclosed 3x3 field with different war fields (Rock, water / Dirt,metal/ ect) for people to play on. We also build in a store selling figurines and manuals to non magic users. We charge admission and give out cash prises to the winners, while also making a profit.

Conclave are ambushers and can use mutants as harassers, pigs giants, lizards. auged footsoldiers and fast attack jetbikes.
City have the prison guard as normal infantry and heavily modded guard as T3 units put some construct like the one in Fulvia's ruins and shit is done.
>>
“You will need to bring a cart or a wheelbarrow of some sort.” The guard scrunches up his face in confusion. “God's sake, why?” You gesture to your egg. “I'm not leaving this here, it's too important.” The guard scowls, but reaches up to press a button on his collar. “Do we have a trolley available?” The reply comes quickly, but sounds artificial and foreign to your ears. “We do, why do you ask?” The guard smirks before giving his reply. “The elf wants a trolley to haul that weird egg thing around.” There is a brief pause before the man on the other side of the conversation responds. “I've found one, we'll bring it up the elevator.”

You glare at the guard. “I'm not an elf, elves are-” You spare a glance towards Profectus. “-a different race entirely, with different values and traditions than my own.” It wouldn't do to state your actual opinion of elves in front of your friend. He is from an older, purer strain than the current stock of degenerate, inbred, lackwits but no doubt he would still be offended. It occurs to you quite suddenly that, knowing Profectus' proclivity for whores, he might have some descendants running around. A lot of them in fact, given that a thousand years have passed. You push that thought from your mind and try to focus on the task at hand, telling off this guard. “Now I expect you to step and fetch, like the trained dog that you are.”

(1/?)
>>
>>34002732
Always have your tunnels dug and ready.
>>
The guard scowls and opens his mouth as if to respond, but in the end thinks better of it. He clenches his jaw and turns brusquely to march out of the room. You stand up and clap your hands together. “Alright then, everybody. Off to another life or death situation, yeah?” Profectus remarks wryly. “Just like every day. Weren't we supposed to be going to some temple to relax? I think I vaguely remember that.” You grin. “Hold out hope, my friend. We shall yet reach the promise land!” He grumbles something you don't quite hear and then throws the blanket off. Darzi stands up, finally armored. Her helmet has retracted to reveal her face, but the rest of her is encased in nearly impenetrable Elaudian steel.

You lead the march out of the lab and down the twisting stairwell to the foyer in front of the High Admiral's office. You wonder if you'll ever actually get to see the High Admiral, or if he will refuse to interact with you as anything but a projected image. The lift arrives, and a faceless guard rolls out a platform on wheels. Oddly enough, this isn't the same lift you arrived on. It's larger, able to comfortably fit your whole party. Chryssa gently sets the egg down on the 'trolley' and your party climbs inside. The guard without a helmet, a gruff looking man with a ridiculously bushy grey mustache and a bald head, presses a button labeled simply 'G'. “Your criminal friend is waiting with the truck.”

Good to know the Admiral is at least keeping that promise. The lift begins to descend rapidly and you feel your stomach lurch into your throat. It occurs to you how hungry you are, you haven't eaten since the dinner you ordered in that hotel room, and you didn't eat much of that. You reach into your cloak and pull out a slab of salted meat, gnawing on it absentmindedly while the guard next to you shifts uncomfortably.

(2/?)
>>
The lift stops and a something dings cheerily. The doors slide open to reveal a massive chamber. Larger than any room you've ever been in, larger even than the Shah's palace. It stretches on for what seems like a mile, far enough that the people on the other end look to be little more than ants. Strange carriages fill the chamber, each of them bulky and armored, with odd turrets on top. Unlike most vehicles you've seen here they actually have wheels, but not like you're used to. They're coated in some kind of strange black material.

The guards escort you out of the lift, you pushing along the trolley. It annoys you to no end that one of the wheels is loose, and constantly rattles around. You try to ignore it with little success. Eventually they stop in front of a armored transport and the ramp on the back of the vehicle opens slowly. Skull Kid is sitting inside, a thick collar around his neck. “'Bout time, they've kept me here for hours. How've you been finding the cells?” You grimace. “Actually, they've been treating us fairly well. We're sleeping on cots in a lab at the top of the tower. I tried to swing your release, but they wouldn't have it.” Skull Kid sighs wearily. “They treat magical aliens from another dimension better than their own people. Typical.” The helmetless guard scowls. “Oh shut up, you bombed an office building. You've no right to fair treatment as far as I'm concerned.” Skull Kid slouches in his seat, he seems sulkier than usual.

Your party and your contingent of guards load into the back of the transport and the ramp slams shut. A light flickers on once its closed, casting everything in a vaguely ominous red light. There are no windows, so you've little idea where you're going. Just as you've seated yourself the vehicle jerks violently into motion and nearly sends you sprawling to the floor, fortunately you manage to keep your seat, and prevent your egg from tumbling out of the trolley.

You glance to each of your party members. “Anyone hungry? I've got food.” Profectus raises his hand. “Starving over here, haven't eaten since the hotel.” Chrys nods her head in agreement, and Darzi simply shrugs. “I could eat.” You start pulling things out of your cloak like some sort of circus act. “Alright, I've got hard biscuits, dried fruit, salted meat, a couple of pickled vegetables...” The guards shift uncomfortably watching you, and you turn your attention to them. “You folk want anything?” There is a period of silence as the guards share looks, but one of them eventually clears his throat. “I'll try some dried fruit.” You nod, pulling out a small bag of dried banana slices. You pass him the bag and indicate that he should hand it around when he's done.

You parcel out hard biscuits and dried meat to the rest of your party. The guard presses a button on his collar and the screen that hides his face retracts. He's a fairly young guy, probably in his late twenties or early thirties, a little older than you. He tentatively puts one of the banana slices in his mouth and chews, a look of awe slowly dawns on his face. He nudges one of the guards next to him and excitedly says. “Yo, Rodge. You gotta try these. It's real banana.” The older guard who seems to be the leader glares at you. “Where'd a wastelander like you get real banana from? You don't look like you can afford to have it imported from the farms up above.” You shrug your shoulders. “I've got my sources.”

He grumbles, but when the bag is passed his way he still takes a handful and enjoys them thoroughly. Before you know it you're passing out what you consider trail rations, and mediocre ones at that, to the guards who seem to think them the highest culinary masterpieces. They're amazed that you have real meat, actual vegetables, and bread made with real wheat. Things you take for granted.

Sharing a communal breakfast seems to do a lot to break the tense atmosphere. You wait until everyone is good and relax and then lean forward, resting your elbows on your knees. “I think we ought to discuss our mission here. We're to capture to kill the 'Witch' and I doubt she'll go without a fight...” Conversation dies down as people turn their attention towards you. {Ignore everything I'm about to say, it's all bullshit. I've got an arrangement with the Witch. She's going to put up a mock fight and then surrender, we're taking her through the portal with us. Apparently she's a Rhynian left here to guard the portal and prevent undesirables from passing through.}

Your party informed, you launch into an explanation. “I've already located the Witches lair, we'll likely face stiff resistance from the mutants inhabiting the woods, but I think-” The gruff-looking older guard interrupts you. You need to learn these guy's names... “How did you locate this supposed witches lair? We comb through this forest every week looking to exterminate the monsters that live there.” You grin, ignoring the fact he interrupted you. “Magic. Now then, as I was saying. I think we ought to stay in this armored transport as long as possible and try to get as close to the lair as possible, because once we step out all that will stand between us and a damned twisted giant bashing in our skull is skill at arms.”

>>
The guards slowly nod their head, though they seem skeptical. The leader speaks. “Well, you keep an eye out for this 'lair' with whatever you used to find it and when we're getting close tell me, I'll direct the driver where to go.” You nod, smiling. “As you say.” You turn your attention to Skull Kid. “Hypothetical question, Thaddeus-” He groans in annoyance. “Fuckin'... for the love of god do not call me that. I abandoned that name damn near as soon as I was old enough to talk.” You smirk. “Right, right. Of course. Anyway, how would you feel about an extended period of time in an airless void?”

People are staring at you. You ignore them. Skull Kid shakes his head slowly in confusion and then shrugs. “Not thrilled, I guess? I mean, I need air to breathe, man. Unless you've got a space suit in that cloak of yours. Why do you ask?” You wave a hand dismissively, though you can't help but be a tad disappointed. You'd oped he had some sort of air tank hooked up to his helmet. “No reason, purely hypothetical. So, what do people do for fun around here?”

Someone mentions cards, and then Profectus produces a set from his bag. It takes a while to adjust the guards to the completely alien deck but eventually you're playing a local game where the goal is to collect matching cards, the first person to get rid of all their cards wins. Fulvia wins. Every time. It's a little discouraging, actually.

Periodically, you activate your magic sight and glance towards the miniature sun deep within the forest to gauge its distance. It grows steadily closer, and after perhaps an hour of bumping along in the transport you turn your attention towards the leader of your contingent of guards. “You'll want to tell the driver to turn sharply to his right, we're about to overshoot the witch's lair. The guard looks at you oddly, but relays your directions anyway. You're nearly thrown out of your seat as the transport makes a sharp right turn.

The road grows much rougher, or perhaps that's because you're no longer on the road. The atmosphere grows tense once more, but not because of discomfort. Rather it's the anticipation of a coming battle that silences the compartment. The guards have raised their helmets once more, obscuring their faces. You spend the majority of your time staring at the bright spot of vys through your magic sight.”

Eventually the transport rolls to a stop and the ramp slides open. The leader of your guards, who has also raised his helmet, presses a button on his collar and speaks. “This is as far as the transport can take us, past this the woods are too thick.” You nod, and slowly the group files out into the woods. The ramp seals itself off behind you. Once in the woods, the lead guard gestures elaborately ahead while pressing that button on his collar that seems to allow him speech. “Well, you know where the place is. Lead the way.”

Hey Soma, is it a vacuum or just pressurized with no air in the cloak?
>>
>>34003613
Vacuum, if you open your mouth you start to feel like your lungs are being ripped out.
>>
>>34003659
I forget, does magic armor tend to seal itself against vacuum? I know we stuck our head in there once but I think we just held our breath

You proceed cautiously, drawing your spear from your cloak and keeping a tight grip on it. Even if the battle will be faked, there is still the chance of injury. After all, it has to look convincing. As you proceed further and further away from the armored transport a whispering begins to fill the air. Bushes rustle, twigs snap. The closer you get to the vys signature, a massive dome you've come to realize, the more activity there is.

The trees seem to stretch upwards, blocking out the early morning light and leaving the forest floor in perpetual shadow. A figure darts in front of you, but it's gone just as quickly as it came. Some of the guards seem on edge, but their leader marches confidently next to you. You get the feeling he's spent a lot of time in this forest. Even you feel a little on edge though, mainly due to the anticipation. You want to see what she's going to throw at you already.

The ground grows increasingly soft, puddles of mud and stagnant water appearing more and more frequently. Next to you the guard commander comments with a hint of nervousness in his voice. “The swamp. I hate the swamp.” You're not actually sure what a 'swamp' is, but you suppose you're about to find out. If it's got a lot of water you're happy enough with it. You continue to pass unmolested as you're forced to pick your way from island to island across narrow bridges of land, the rest of the area being given over to shallow, murky pools filled with who knows what sort of creatures. You're forced to walk single file through several areas. It's only as the dome itself passes into sight that you meet your first sign of trouble.

You drop your magic sight, expecting to see some sort of enchanted wall barring your path. Instead you see nothing, a murky pool that looks to be slightly deeper than most. Sitting directly in front of you, only a few feet away, is a twisted reptile resembling an alligator in many ways, except you don't recall alligators having a second, smaller snout nested within their larger snout.

You leap away as it snaps at you, an easy feat considering how slow it's moving. Unfortunately one of the guards isn't so lucky. One of them clamps its jaws around Rodge's leg, pulling him into the water violently. Blood fills the water quickly and more of the beast seem to emerge from the murky water. Seems this is the attack the Witch promised.

You twirl your spear unnecessarily in the air as gunshots echo through the swamp. Usually you're against such showmanship but it's not like this is a real fight. You cap the performance off by slamming the tip of the spear into the head of the 'gator in front of you, driving it all the way through with surprising ease. You brace your foot against the creature's snout and rip the blade of your spear out, just in time to impale another through its inner mouth as it lunges at you. You leap nimbly onto the back of one of the creatures, stabbing your spear into its flesh to provide an anchor as it thrashes around, and then shove your hand into the murky pool to see if you can't save Rodge. To die in a glorified performance isn't exactly the most noble way to go.

Unfortunately he's sunk too deep into the pool. You twist your spear blade in the gator's flesh and then rip it out violently, shoving the haft into the murk and prodding around until you hit something fleshy. You feel a hand grasp onto it and, channeling vys into your arms to enhance your strength, pull Rodge from the muck with a wet plop. His left leg has been shorn off below the knee, and he must be screaming head off because you can hear it even through his helmet, but you staunch the bleeding with a wave of your hand and alleviate some of the pain. That seems to calm him somewhat. It's a chore to carry him back to land but fortunately the beast seem to be fleeing, or dead. One of them is filled with a seriously inordinate number of holes, more a fleshy mass than a corpse.

>>
The guard commander presses that button on his collar as one of the guards steps forward to take Rodge out of your arms. “Eli will carry Rodger back to the transport, he's one of my best. We ought to be able to get him back to the Tower for medical treatment if we can staunch the bleeding.” You wave him off. “I took care of it, no need to worry. The lair should be just ahead.” The commander doesn't respond, all business as far as you can tell. You step confidently through the edge of the dome, into what appears to be a deep pool of murky water, and find your foot touching down on dry, or at least mostly dry, land.

The woman you find waiting for you past the barrier is decidedly less intimidating than you'd expected, despite the wolf curled up on the ground next to her and the raven perched on her shoulder. Her hair is black with a few white hairs here and there, instead of the reddish-brown you saw through that strange connection. Plus she's not wearing any sort of demonic mask, rather she looks fairly young and at least moderately attractive, though hideously pale. Then again, most humans appear hideously pale to you. Most elves too. They need to get out in the sun more.

(2/3)
>>
Stay awake Soma, you've only been running for 14 hours.
>>
Her clothes are decidedly humble, and not at all Rhynian. A dark green dress and a simple black cloak, conservative. The raven caws at you angrily as you step past the barrier concealing her and the humble abode behind her, a glorified lean-to. The wolf appears to be asleep. She scowls as your contingent of guards steps through the barrier behind you, along with Chrys, Profectus, Darzi, and Fulvia. “And what, may I ask, brings such a heavily armed retinue to my humble abode?” There is an undeniable edge to her voice, she sounds dangerously close to violence.
