The atmosphere of Raligha rocks your corvette as it descends upon the dense vegetation. Much of the world is covered in some form of vegetation, with vast jungles ringing the equator and slowly tapering out into vast grasslands pockmarked with mountains and windswept plateaus.
You home in on the location of the Union’s campsite. From orbit you detected a small settlement of pre-fabricated buildings and modular plastic boxes draped in thermal blankets. A perimeter of metal walls has been assembled around the camp, with four small towers mounted on the corners, each with a gun emplacement.
You find a small clearing and your ship moves to it. Your wasps stream from the hull in a cloud of chitin and as your ship touches down the rest of your drones slowly emerge from within the damaged vessel.
You take a quick account of your forces as they move to the tree line.

Finished Research

>Giant Crab dissection
This large armored predator is capable of using its single long claw to attack from almost any direction. It possesses a single, large lung capable of filtering oxygen from water as well as breathing air to a limited degree.

>Biomechanical engineering
The science and art of grafting and altering your drones is a well-practiced and simple task, grafting and altering other forms of life is far more difficult and unpredictable. With your new understanding of alien life you now feel confident in the potential of manipulating alien life to suit your needs. Instead of changing your drones to suit the situation, you can now force the situation to change to suit you.

>New adaptations unlocked
Gills: These sensitive organs extract oxygen directly from water, permitting a drone to function under water as well as on land. (4N)

Tail: A long, whip-like tail formed from the end of the abdomen that can be used as a third claw. It can equip a single blade or melee weapon, as well as function as a rudimentary grasper. The resulting consolidation of body organs in the drone’s thorax results in a more easily injured drone, but the increase in balance and added utility make for an excellent ambush weapon.(6)

Biological interface: These sets of small spines are similar in function to your computer interface, but with organic life. The interface lets a drone attach itself to other organic beings, be it a drone or alien, and either sustain itself or sustain its host, as well as monitor vital signs and administer chemicals as needed. (20N)

>New technology unlocked
Sedative pheromone: This mild mind altering substance is designed to block the chemical impulses that often result in a violent fight-or-flight response, easing panic and helping to calm the subject. While it is most effective on humans, it should show some limited effect in other life forms, although it remains untested.

Well, there are several reasons that you have yet to find such life. First, carbon, oxygen and hydrogen are all very common in the universe, and second, such life would be so alien that you may not recognize it as life at first and dismiss it as a natural formation or interesting anomaly. You do know of the Canians, which according to the data you retrieved from the Clarke computer, are plasma based life held together by looping electrical fields that live on the surface of the star of the Wolf system.

Your forces move into the jungle as you watch the server ship high above you enter orbit. The vast vessel can be seen clearly from beneath the quickly darkening sky as it catches the last few glimpses of the star's light.
"Union response will likely be incoming within the week." Theseus says, "Our forces must leave before then."

The human camp is several miles through the jungle to the north of your landing site, while the temple should be just north-east of the camp.

>Lyle’s Combat armor
Medium
Not as powerful or complex as the drop suit, the combat armor appears to be a delicate mix of survivability and combat capabilities, with many similarities to the Union environmental suit. It appears to contain a number of devices designed to be useful in the field.

>Magnetic Levitation
Medium
The small human buggy uses a series of superconducting magnets to glide along a planet’s surface a short distance from the ground. Apparently based off of Ceph technology, this device grants a great advantage to mobility.

Carbon liquid
Medium
This strange substance appears to be alive, and reshapes itself by assembling itself into various crystalline structures as needed. You're still not sure if it was trying to attack your ship or if it was simply reacting automatically in some fashion. An extensive battery of tests should reveal more regarding the substance.

Space dust
Medium
While it was too minute to analyze in the field, this space dust contains trace amounts of nutrient contents. Testing should reveal if it is a form of life, or simply some strange natural phenomena, as well as how to make use of it.

We aren't trading for the slow researches because we don't have enough to trade *for* them that we should be giving away.

More importantly, we have a number of humans down here. Some of them may have expertise that will accelerate a few of them:

- technicians to help with CIP Pistol
- medical/bio types to help with the Regeneration Tank -- which with medical tech, could help to accelerate our research of Lyle's cybernetics in turn.
- engineers to help dismantle and explain atomic bombs to us, or else we eat them.

>Split up your sniffers

Your sniffers take to the air. You first find the camp site. The four towers each hold a large manned turret. The walls are made of a metal alloy held up from the ground on a series of short struts to keep the foundation level. Your sniffer keeps its distance, easily blending into the dense foliage. You can hear voices from over the walls.
"Sir! It's a server ship in orbit!"
"Move the supplies into the shelters! Distribute the ammo and get ready to defend! Gaston, word on the survey team?"
"Nothing yet, we lost radio after the Hope blew."
"Damnit!"

Your other sniffer quickly makes its way to the location of the temple, although it's difficult to find the entrance. Eventually you find a small collection of lights and portable generators stacked along a small patch of smoothed stone. Standing in the center is a small outcropping of a marble structure covered in worn carvings and wrapped in vines. The humans are nowhere in sight.

>>34043854
You send your colosi charging through the forest. The two drones plow down trees and level a path of forest as they go, sending strange creatures running for cover. At first you think you see a number of birds fly away, but as you look you see each one is a small oval covered in a ring of flaps. They spin like a top and lift themselves into the air like tiny helicopters as they shoot themselves away in all directions. A number of larger creatures roll along the ground on their center axis like living wheels.

"Incoming. Something big on the sensors." You hear from the camp. A human on top of the wall is manipulating a small device connected to a rotating dish. He drops it as the snap of a falling tree startles him, and he looks up to see a swarm of fleeing creatures filling the air.
"The fuck is that? That's not Unity!"
The ground begins to tremble with each footstep.

Your drones break through the dense foliage and open fire from their cannons. One of the towers breaks in half and collapses as the others turn and open fire.
"Jesus Christ, what are those?"
"Take cover!"
The walls bend inward as your drones close the distance and slam into the gate. The closest tower to the wall is engulfed in flames as your colosi sprays the turret with plasma. Your other spins its rotary and in a short moment several of the flimsy shelters are reduced to a fine powder.
Your drones slam the gate again, warping the hinges and bending the gate downwards as the air fills with lighting and wasps.
Your shock troops land with a great thud as they leap the gate, catching several humans under them as they land.

The scene quickly descends into chaos as your drones swarm over the camp. With a third mighty push the gate buckles and a flowing sea of warriors pours from the breach. The humans open fire with lighting and projectiles, quickly cutting down as many as they can, but for every drone they bring down another takes its place. They quickly scatter in panic, running to the small pre-fabricated lab they had dropped from orbit, some others abandon the camp and flee into the dense jungle. As the last few humans seal the doors to the lab you regroup your drones.

Survival is about adaptation, and our race does just that. It was built to adapt to whatever climate, whatever trials and tribulations the universe throws at us.

And nothing is taboo when conquering the universe. Never stay predictable. One moment, we're beating their gates down. The other, we're spreading disease and viruses carried by our brood into their sewers and air.

Later on, we become them. Brother versus brother, neighbor versus neighbor. Paranoia and terror. Have you ever seen The Thing? It's kind of like that.

We are the most horrifying thing in the galaxy because the Hive adapts and evolves faster than anything known, given the resources from whatever planet and civilization we touch.

But we are young. Patience and secrecy will keep us from being blasted from the face of the cosmos, and patience and secrecy will be our silent conquerors.

Your drone leaps into the air with a mighty beat of its wings and comes down on top of the fleeing solder. You hear a bone snap with the impact and your warriors quickly drag him back to the camp. Your drones continue, converging on them as they trip through the dense vegetation. As you give chase one of them turns to face your drone and opens fire. As he does a bold of chitin punctures his leg with a wet crunch and the stream of plasma leaps to a tree, splitting it in two. Another two are found in a large pit, and another hanging from a tree by a vine. They are quickly all accounted for, six in all. You counted another eleven in the lab, and the bodies of seven others litter the camp.

Nay, anon. There can be only one.

I think our reason for being out in that cold expanse of space, far from home and further from our purpose was an emergency wherever we came from. A big, extinction-level event kind of emergency.

We were laid and sent off as a final hope of future survival and a furtive hope we won't make the same mistakes as our predecessor. Quiet, alone, and undetectable. We fell asleep to visions of our world burning and our people dying.

Anon, we're all that's left and I don't think there's enough room in the universe for two of our kind.

At least, that's my headcanon for the moment.

Your speaker moves to the lab door. You see a small radio device mounted to the wall.

"Irelivant. Exit and surrender before you suffer heat stroke."

Your colosus lightly sprays the far wall with plasma, bringing the sealed windows to a reddish glow. You can tell the building was designed with heat shielding, but only along the bottom of the structure. After several minutes you hear the glass on the other side crack from the heat.
You hear the yelling resume in the building, and after a short while longer the door opens. Several humans fall out of the door gasping for breath. They are quickly tackled and taken away from the door as several others emerge, their faces red and covered with sweat.

You now count seventeen humans in you care, placed in the center of the small camp in a circle of warriors. You can make out several rank insignias based on your experience with the Clarke's crew. Most of them Spacemen, five Senior spacemen, three sergeants of various kinds, a lieutenant, and a captain. Once the lab cools back down you manage to retrieve nine CIP pistols and six conventional rifles. Your workers quickly pile the materials together on the far side of the camp.

One human colony is attacked by bugs, which look suspiciously like the ones that are suspicious about. Where do you think they are going to check first?

Nearly everything in the camp is made of some form of usable metal. Your workers sift through the wreckage for anything of more delicate value. Despite all that has happened the lab is still almost completely intact. Half-finished experiments and tests litter the tables, and shattered beakers litter the floor. You find several papers and documents covering a desk, and several empty spaces where it appears some field equipment has been removed. In total you find a dozen small cultures unknown varieties.

You quickly gather the test samples and look through the notes scattered about on the table.

"Preliminary results are inconclusive, but rock samples around the site dates back at least fifty thousand years. What is most interesting is the carvings themselves, however. Not only do they depict creatures that do not match the local life forms, but they appear to be involved in some sort of collective ritual. I am sure Seiner will enjoy looking over the samples in detail once we begin excavation." It is dated just three days ago. You find another.
"The dig site is proving more difficult than anticipated. The stone is far more durable than anything we have seen before. It is completely uniform wherever we search with no seams or indications of conventional construction. It's has if the entire site is carved from a single stone. Tonight we will return to the camp and make a request for more sturdy digging equipment, although I hate to desecrate such a priceless piece of xenoarchaeology."
Finally, the last one is dated yesterday.
"An astounding discovery! Just after we had filled our report we discovered something. Some alternate entrance, perhaps, or damage leading into the site itself. Once the data has been sent back and a larger team is dispatched we should be able to quickly dig out the ruins! With any luck, by this time tomorrow--" The page ends with a large mark of ink and a small hole punched in the paper.

You're still not sure if it was trying to attack your ship or if it was simply reacting automatically in some fashion. An extensive battery of tests should reveal more regarding the substance.

Medium
While it was too minute to analyze in the field, this space dust contains trace amounts of nutrient contents. Testing should reveal if it is a form of life, or simply some strange natural phenomena, as well as how to make use of it.

There are five systems on the map that are uncharted, we can conquer those.

However, we should also see what we can do with the planets that have nothing but letter and number designations in the Expanse.

Once we can afford a small fleet of 5 or so corvettes we can plasma lance the exploration vessels out of existence when they're vulnerable and can't FTL for help.

It will at least slow the Union expansion down, and they can blame it on Unity. after all Unity was attacking at the fungus planet too.

We got ourselves a genius over here.

Also no, no we knew there were more humans that were part of the temple investigation team.

We knew they were in the jungle somewhere.

We had the option to track them down. We focused on the camp first.
>>
>>34049077
Your corvette sheds wasps as they scatter in the air, swarming in all directions. As your ship touches down on top of the dig site the bulk of your drones exits and you split their numbers, sending half of them to finish searching the jungle for the rest of the survivors.
It doesn't take long for your wasps to reach the launch site. You find a single small tripod and a scattering of footprints in the soft soil. The tripod itself is little more than a hollow metal tube, and the footprints lead off into the thicket before vanishing across a small river.

Please roll 1d100, best of 3 for tracking.

>>34049194
That was a typo, just to be clear. Accidentally reversed the numbers. You have 122 at a cost of 488 N per day.

Your sniffers leap up into the air, quickly picking up the trail of soot and powder left from the operation of the launcher. Your drones bob and weave through the jungle as they fly in chase.
It doesn't take long. Not far from the river you can hear the rapid pace of a pair of humans sprinting through the vegetation. As you close in on them one of them turns to fire, unleashing a hail of projectiles into the pursuing swarm.
A wasp is clipped in the leg, but the swarm continues, engulfing the Union solder and quickly pulling him into the air. Your sniffer continues its pursuit of the other, crossing over dense bridge of twisted roots and through another river.
The human is within your grasp, but his sprinting makes him easy to track. Your sniffer follows and you ponder how to deal with the situation.

Your sniffer pulls back, slowly letting the human gain distance until only a small hint of his trail remains through the jungle. You sense his pace slow slightly as your other sniffer regroups, flanking your quarry just beyond sight.
You slowly trail the human as he weaves loops through the jungle in seemingly random directions, eventually reaching an over-grown cliff face. Dug within the cliff is a strange, hexagonal cave covered in thick vines. The human makes a strange whistling noise, and is replied with the same noise a pitch lower from the cave.
As the vines part and the human enters you note several others within the cave, as well as the unmistakable surface of the temple walls lining the cave itself. The temple must be truly vast to span so far under the jungle, with at least a kilometer of distance between the temple entrance and the cave.

Blorp did do a quest before Ogre Civ.

Your sniffers inch closer until they can make out the humans within by their movements. You detect six in the cave, two leaning against the walls, the one you had followed, two laying down, and one sitting near the middle.
"What happened? Where's Malik?"
The man shakes his head between gasps for air.
"What happened? He heard holy hell out there."
"They shot at us, almost killed the both of us. Scrambler didn't do shit, and the're not Unity."
"What do you mean, that thing floating up there looks a lot like a server ship."
"Well they made friends. The whole damn ship was organic looking. Fucking thing was filled with bees the size of a man. Malik tried to fight 'em and they just swarmed all over him. Fuck. Fuck."
"And the camp?" A woman's voice pitches in. "What about the camp?"
"Looted and destroyed, along with a good dozen acres around it."
"What are they? Natives?"
"No, clearly not." The woman's accented voice trembles slightly. "But I do think they may have been here before. Thousands of years ago, perhaps. If only I had my research notes..."
"We don't have that kind of luxury, doctor. We should focus on keeping ourselves nice and snug until rescue arrives. You can worry about your relics after we're on our way back home."
"You don't understand, this place, I think it's a sort of vault. Look at these carvings. They are too simple, too obvious to be a precise language. I think it's some sort of... manual. I think it was left here with the intention to be found. If we can get through the inner gate, whatever is inside may help."
"I don't want to have to say this again, whatever you uncovered you go and cover back up. I want no part of it. We wait. We get rescued, and we go home. Thats' it."
"But-"
"That's the end of it!"

The figure stands back up and slowly moves farther into the cave, beyond your range to detect.

The sun is slowly peaking over the horizon in the early morning of Raligha's exceptionally long day as the air fills with strange sounds. Howling in the distance mixed with a deep drumming. The alien temple is covered in strange markings. The only surface that appears to not be from the same block of stone is a single slab covered in a ring of symbols, each one with a traced line flowing into a center ring.
Your sniffers continue to watch the cave entrance. They spot three more humans outside, crouched in the trees motionless, their rifles wrapped in crinkled foil like fake bark.

They took those photographs like 30 minutes before Unity and we attacked.

They never mentioned this alternate entrance report in their radio transmissions, yet they managed to type it up on paper.

So presumably the photos were from this place that they were just starting investigating today.

>M-662 – Red dwarf
>• Barren rock: This lifeless rock is scorched by the star during the day, and freezes during the night. The planet rotates very slowly, with a day lasting several months at the equator.
>• Asteroid belt: A relatively small belt of asteroids that are, for the most part, held in a stable orbit around the star. It is likely the result of a failed planet.

Wait. Waaaait.

This is too reminiscent of FG-883's "debris field".

>• Debris field: Tidal forces of the stars have torn apart a number of would-be planets, creating a diffuse cloud of stellar debris that often falls between the two stars and is thrown away at great speeds, causing frequent impacts to the systems other celestial bodies.

The creation of which was actually from the artificial destruction of the Skyl homeworld.

And we just found a dark temple of what is either another naturally telepathic race, or another servitor race, in this system. I swear if this is the temple-builders' equivalent of an abandoned colony on Mars and they had their homeworld turned into asteroids by Them too I have to wonder if we can just follow the continuous trail of destruction across this sector leading towards modern Ceph territory.

Your drones charge in towards the cave entrance, quickly descending upon the lookouts. As your forces approach your sniffer sees one of the lookouts cup is hands over his mouth and lets out a loud caw that sends the others within the cave leaping to their feet.

"They followed you right here, you bastard!"

The lookouts level their rifles and pull the trigger. You feel a wasp's mind blink out of existence as its body drops from the air. A moment later another is plucked from the sky as a round punctures its head. Your wasps fill the air, closing the gap in moments, but the two keep up their fire. Another two drones go down, and another.
Their shots are silenced as their trees are torn apart by a hail of chitin and they fall from the branches and into the passing current of rushing warriors. They get within sight of the entrance to the cave itself and an explosion rocks the cliff face, tearing apart several advancing warriors. The vines evaporate into a green mist with a volley of weapons fire from within the cave. You see three of the humans hosing down the area with their weapons as they back away deeper into the cave.

"Fall back and use the bottle neck!" One of them screams as he rolls another grenade into the oncoming horde.
They drop down behind something as they dive on the other side of the cave entrance into a larger antechamber of some sort. As your warriors continue their charge they are met with a wall of hot lead and bolts of lighting. You manage to place several good shots into a few of the defenders before the mass of shattered bodies grinds your advance to a standstill.

You quickly pull your drones out of the cave and back into the jungle just outside.

In the leaders' tent at the camp the Clarke crew had, they had a hologram, if I remember right.

Presumably we can obtain hologram technology somewhere in the Hel's Angel or the Clarke.

That might be useful for communicating more complex imagery to inferior non-telepathic races when needed.

Blorp's Quest was before Ogre Quest.

It was done by Blorp, and it was based on turning a small salamander blessed with Evolution into a horrid Elder-thing that had a cult of lizardmen worshiping it.

It ate brains.

It practiced necromancy.

It rode around in an Ever-burning Bone Golem built around a T-Rex skull.

It stopped a meteor summoned down from the heavens by a mage by commanding nature to get it's shit together and made a giant network of trees, vines, and solid earth to stop said GIANT FUCKING METEOR in the air.
The only scene that comes to mind comes from fucking Naruto, of all things.Madara is fucking bullshit.
Took said giant fucking meteor held suspended over a forest, hollowed that bitch out, and turned it into his fortress-capital.

Blorp's sanity was forever wrecked by that quest, and TO PROVE IT, he went on to make Ogre quest.
>>
>>34052080
Depends on what you mean by "reliably"
If you have a ship in the system already with an eye on the target location, then sure. Still would require a roll to avoid horrible fiery death, though the roll would be relatively low with another one of your ships close by.
