8th thread. 7th didn't make it to sup/tg/. Shamefur dispray.

Welcome to the official Kidpunk RPG development thread!

The Kidpunk RPG system is an all-original tabletop RPG system that aims to capture the feel of this style; you play a kid with an incredible imagination, taking part in fantastic battles with weapons real and imaginary. Imagination is a valuable resource, and a careful balance must be struck between how cool your friends think you are, and how much your parents dote on you. There are currently sixteen classes of kids in four cliques - jocks, nerds, cuties, and weirdos - and currently under construction are item (toy) mechanics, companion mechanics, and finishing up classes.

Feel free to post feedback, questions, suggestions, ideas, or any other form of contribution. This is NOT a thread for the discussion of "kidpunk" as a genre or any other kind of "-punk." This is a thread specifically for the development of Kidpunk RPG.

Is there any particular timetable towards completion?
>>
>>34144449
Not a specific one. We're trying not to let optimism outpace reality or rush ourselves to keep up with a schedule. We're working the crunch at the pace we can in order to make playtesting and balancing as smooth as possible.

What >>34144812 said. We're getting to the point where we're working on Companions and Crafting and Pretend. These are sections that are cornerstones of the Friendmaker, Tinker, and Dreamer classes.

After that we should be able to start work on character sheets.

>>34145109
Personally, it was because I thought the thread would've lasted until bump limit. Dunno 'bout the rest of you.

I think the problem is most of us are on at the same time of day, so it tends to go quiet all day.

Possibly? I haven't read the thing. Is it about kids fighting with the power of Imagination?

It's little kids using belief to fight boogey men and other horrors. alao possibly a metaphor for abused children

Yeah, sounds pretty Kidpunk to me.
>>
>>34145896
It might be a darker example.

I feel obligated to point out that this should really be a thread about the specific RPG called kidpunk, rather than kidpunk as a genre. However, unofficially, I don't mind the question.

There's now a list of Iconics in the kidpunk folder. Linked on the first page is a page for each Iconic, the page has their quotes and fluff texts and any relevant notes.

Should be useful for us fluffmancers.
>>

Awesome maybe we could give some fluff love to kids like the Know it All or scrapper iconic? Their own little character based campaigns or story ideas or whatever.
>>
>>34149434
That's what they're there for.

Crunch crew is up and awake. If there ever was a good time to come up with ideas that could be implemented or if you want to help out making some mechanics, this is the time.

Things going on right now:

We're working on Competitions in general.

We're going to combine Sprinting and Race as they were not different enough to qualify as two different competitions. We're also brainstorming an arm-wrestling contest.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gSP2M_p6pmqPS8u8KyXv-yHPg2KivyMZRHC-Pn4A-SM/edit

We've now gotten started on the mental competitions, they sure look a lot like homework to me!

https://docs.google.com/document/d/19v01TdDBCdfz0Y11nlpe0ukG5wx5oGJ4bTaEcpTO9hI/edit#

As always, we're hanging out in IRC so feel free to drop in anytime.
>>
Fib, Flatter, Quiz, Riddle and Know have been added to the competitions list.

Would you prefer to fib or flatter your way through?
>>
Update #somethingsomething

We've made enough Competitions to leave them alone for a bit while we tinker onwards.

We're currently going through the Trait list to write them up properly and provide a variety of choices as well as the most basic ones.

We'll do the same with Vices soon enough.

We've also gone back to some of the types and changed the numbers of Cheaters, Friendmakers and True Believers to make their stats more to what they should've been.
>>
>>34144124
Just noticed the Iconic Friendmaker is not named Calvin.

>>34148419
Do we already have a quest/campaign idea for monsters in closet/beneath one's bed?

>>34147477
Personally I don't like the PIP symbol. Seems to make Parental Influence all about money. The Social Standing symbol also isn't one of my favorites, but I can't suggest anything better, so I will not complain.
>>
>>34154970
>Personally I don't like the PIP symbol. Seems to make Parental Influence all about money.
I agree, but I believe our friendly neighborhood drawfag is working on some alternatives.
>>
>>34155059
Ah, ok then.
>>
>>34155059
Yes. This was dropped. I came with the idea to use a tie or a thumbs up to represent PIP, but our drawfriend is not around right now.

>>34154970
>Do we already have a quest/campaign idea for monsters in closet/beneath one's bed?
It was talked about. We decided for them to be different than Imaginary Best Friends at the least. But we've not done much with them. I'm doing mostly crunch work and layout so fluff and campaigns isn't my territory.
>>
Also a new update!

Traits now have a layout and there's been some simple Traits put in there! Go have a look and tell us what you think.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1FglmMt7l2Mzg3RcAWawJ1wTqHEI3V_id9hrBScEZ_zg/edit#
>>
>>34155122
I haven't been to the IRC chat, so all the ideas that I've had I've posted here.

I like the idea of using a thumbs up to represent PIP, very much so. Reminds me of Kronk's New Groove. That was the name of the movie, right?

I'm having some ideas for Monsters, inspired by Monsters Inc. Something like a "secret world of monsters", not necessarily a literal world. Also, the Secret Society of Late-nighters, formed by the very few kids who do dare or are allowed to stay awake past bedtime.

And a single-quest based around a sleepover turned into a fight against a closet monster. Or a sleepover made with that exact purpose, Idk.

Oh, and how have Competitions been going? And Dashing mechanics btw? I remember before they were changed I had some sort of opinion on the Intimidation Competition and Dashing.
>>
>>34155291
There's a single Competition for races now. The Competitions went along quite well, but we're trying to make sure they're either VERY meaningful or VERY different, otherwise we try to merge them as much as possible.

Dashing is part of combat. It takes up your entire turn but allows you to move any number of fields.

Intimidation -might- become a Competition, or a feature only for combat. I feel more for the latter.

Also, refer to this document for easy browsing through all the docs. The links should all work and it's far less bothersome to click a link and go directly where you want to than to find the document in the right folders! Especially if you have no idea where it could be.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/11uBUvKBuCaPGwBYEoWKvuC7EDquMkLepdQf__ZsUM3Q/edit#
>>
>>34155366
There's so many people already working on the crunch that I'm pretty sure if I tried to help other than giving feedback I'd just screw things up. And I'm not sure how to help with fluff other than suggesting campaign/quest ideas here.

That said:
>Dashing
As a kid, running around would get oneself hurt or at least bruised very often. I feel like this should be addressed by losing Will, but then it could turn into a very easy way to lose Will that'd screw things up. So yeah, crunch first, fluff later, therefore unless there's a way to make that properly it's well as it is IMO.

>Intimidation
I remember it was PHY based, but I felt like it should have been SOC, or at least address SOC somehow.

BTW, what about the Bully Trait [+PHY/-SOC]? Wait, there's already the Burly Trait. Nevermind. Speaking of Traits:

>Traits
Mostly would change one or two trait names. You seem to have covered the basic traits already (+STAT/-STAT), which leaves complex traits like Rich Kid and Poor Boy to go. Maybe I'll think of something. Can I just write them there or should I write them here?

>Campaign, Quests and Badmans
Well, don't know why but most of the times I post here it seems to suggest something that falls here. Any tip how I can contribute to this while the other stuff is still going on?

Also, thinking about a sheet for Badmans, and maybe characters too, since so far they'd share the same stats and stuff.

What about Baddies instead of Badmans? Most of them are not men anyways.

>Competitions
Oh, do we already have Truth-or-Dare?
>>
>>34155772
Truth-or-Dare was mentioned, but we're uncertain how to make it work within the ruleset. There's also a Gross-Out Competition that is thematically perfect but we have no idea what to do with it.
>>
>>34155797
It's a very interesting mechanic that gives a character with a low stat chance to shine. Most games, the highest number wins, so you don't want low numbers in your party. The Gross-Out competition allows for the guy in your party with Extremely High PHY, Low MTN and SOC (i.e. the bully) to outperform someone in a SOC competition.

The closest thing I can think of in other media is the Gyroball (or something like that) move in Pokémon. Usually you want a fast pokémon to hit first and thus kill your oponent before they can attack, but the slower you are, the harder Gyroball hits. Not saying it's a good example or low-stat-win mechanic, just saying it's an example.

Dares could work as means of forcing someone else in doing the competition you want them to. Why would the enemy enter a Gross-Out competition against the Bully when they know they have higher SOC? The Bully dared him, now he had to or he'd lose SSP. Truth-or-Dares could be similar. I see the Mafia Kids and the different groups of bullies Truth-or-Daring each other in order to extort information and products. Pick Truth and you must reveal an information about your business, pick Dare and you must do something you will regret greatly. Pick any and your very enemy will have to pick one too.

... Is that Noir Kidpunk?
>>
>>34155772
>Can I just write them there or should I write them here?
you could add them to that list of suggestions at the bottom of the dock, but we're probably more likely to notice them here, honestly.
>>
>>34156005
Sorry if I worded myself badly, I meant write them in the template, not as a suggestion. The finished product already, if you will. Maybe even take some of the suggestions down there and write them out. That's what I was unsure of whether I should do there or here.
>>

>>
And G Docs is being an ass to me again,
>>
>>34156043
Eh, whaetevr. Here are a few:
- Big Eater: 50% increase to the effects of Snacks and Meals / -1 PHY and SOC
- Class Clown: Everytime the SSP reset, the Class Clown gains an extra amount of SSP based on their SOC / Everytime a Class Clown would gain PIP, they gain half as many PIP rounded up instead.
- Tomboy Girl and Girlish Boy: Don't suffer SOC penalty against the opposite gender / Suffer SOC penalty against same gender.
- Handsome Boy and Pretty Girl: Don't suffer SOC penalty against the opposite gender / -3 PHY?
- Average Joe/Jenny: Can't gain or lose SSP other than SSP reset, disobedience and chore doing.
- Wallflower: Bonus to sneaky actions / -3 base SSP
- Too Cool For School: +3 base SSP / -2 MNT
- Reclusive Nerd: +2 MNT / -3 base SSP

I feel like there should be room to add some flavour to the traits. A sentence, maybe two, even if most of them are self-explanatory. For example:
>Cool Older Brother
Your brother was a legend back when he studied in your school, so much that he's still spoken of by the kids of today. And by your parents too.
Gain: +3 base SSP
Loss: Doing chores only grant you 1 PIP.
>>
>>34158650
Sorry about the lack of response to your previous post. The guy who formatted and wrote that whole section has been away.
I really like the Big Eater idea. As far as some of the numbers you've used, we really want to avoid having any single trait adjust a primary stat by more than 1 point (you can see on the current table that all of the primary stat modifiers are +1/-1). But, yeah, Big Eater is a good idea and maybe we could even have a Picky Eater trait.
>I feel like there should be room to add some flavour to the traits. A sentence, maybe two, even if most of them are self-explanatory.
That's absolutely something that we plan on doing. We just got Traits to a point where it's usable and now we want to focus on a section that isn't quite usable yet. We still have some things that we're not quite sure how we want to work, so we're just focusing on getting everything coherent for now. Everything is going to get another pass as it comes together in a complete, testable system.
>>
>>34159144
Since Traits are an advantage and a disadvantage each, and Vices a single disadvantage, perhaps a kid could have two Vices for three Traits, totalling 3 advantages and 5 disadvantages. And by the way, if Divorced Parents is going to be a Vice, then Vice may not be the best name for it?

Picky Eater sounds more like a Vice for me. As does something related to sugar rush.

>>
>>34144124
Seeing the doc for Badmans - which I think should be renamed to just Baddies - and noticed someone wrote something for Monsters, Imaginary Friends and Boogeymen. So I decided to write my own suggestion and put it here.

>Imaginary Monsters
The evil counterpart of Imaginary Friends. Differently from the pal that's always there to support you no matter what, Imaginary Monsters only want to eat you. Or at least, that's what they say. You don't want to wonder about what else they could want from you, that's just too scary. Imaginary Monsters include:

>Grues
Big, mean and very ugly. Grues are creatures of the dark, because they know how hideous their appearance is. They hide in closets, lurk beneath one's bed and everywhere else there's darkness and emptiness. Despite being freakishly strong, they aren't the brightest bulb of the box. By simply covering oneself beneath a blanket they will believe you to be gone, by keeping a plush toy around they'll believe it to be a mighty beast and by keeping a lamp on they'll avoid exiting their hideouts entirely. Weak Grues have about +3 PHY, -1 MNT and -1 SOC. Strong Grues have about +6 PHY, -3 MNT and -3 SOC. All Grues have the traits "Nocturnal" and "Tight Fit", and the vice "Afraid of the Light".

>Tooth Rats
A twisted caricature of the well known Tooth Fairies. Unexpectedly they can range from brown, grey, black to any color of the rainbow that is the candy store. They have yellow, mishapen teeth that don't fit their mouth and two tiny leathery wings, that go hand-in-hand with their tiny claws and tail. All Tooth Rats have the vice "Did someone say candy!?"
Commentary: I think I've heard some countries have the tale of Tooth Rats instead of Tooth Fairies, so apologies for making them evil if you're sensitive to that.
>>
>>34167999
>Hags
One of the worse monsters that there could be. Even your parents warn you about them! Hags appear to be an elderly person, usually female, wearing a ragged cloak and carrying their characteristic bag, but a closer inspection might reveal some inhuman traits like a snake tongue, scaly skin, sharp teeth and even a lizard's tail! They kidnap children that are awake past their bedtime or didn't do their homework or stick their fingers inside their nose or for every other reason they feel like.
Commentary: Based on a story I used to hear when a child about the "sackman", or "bagman", or however you want to translate that as. I also think I've seen that story in a Mexican series too, so I suspect it's not a local thing. Also based on the legend of the Cuca (or Coco as Wikipedia puts it). There was a national writer over here who wrote something I'm pretty sure counts as kidpunk, one of the antagonists being... Cuca, a half alligator, half old woman witch, whose one of the main evil-doings was turning the main character into a rock. Also I'm pretty sure that teacher, Mrs. Huncher, is a hag. At least that's what the other kids say...

>Boogeymen
The broccoli in your plate, the stone in your shoe, the homework you have to do. Boogeymen are just the worse of the worse.
Commentary: after that I got stuck. I don't know if I should make Boogeymen the baddies that can get other baddies to work together, cause nightmare in kids, inspire kids to become troublemakers or... Forgot the fourth thing, damnit.

>Creepers
Creepers... I-I don't know dude, it just keeps staring at me while I try to sleep, it's so scary.

>Crawlies
A civilization composed of bugs who have achieved sentience, ruled by an evil spider queen. She's always commanding her scientists to build her a world-domination machine, and to do so she sends her army of ants, moths and mite to collect organic material for parent-forsaken experiments.
Commentary: *blinks* Yeah... I need to go to sleep.
>>
>>34167999

This is a good point. Why is this kid _punk_?

Punk usually implies a dystopia, or the idea that despite the wonderful things being introduced everything is still shit because technology/magic/imagination, mass-produced and available in all forms, doesn't fix inherent problems in humanity and will follow the same rules of economics, or 1% wealth problems, as everything else we've acquired.

This is much more light-hearted, it seems, and much more focused on the ideals of childhood adventure. You could use a better name.

>>
>>34178630
And the rest of us can acknowledge that, but the discussions from the previous threads will show that the name is appropriate on multiple levels. I dislike the misuse of -punk myself, this isn't.

Back on topic, been rewatching Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, and it brought a question to mind. Assuming that there is an IBF the can make portals to other worlds, how would that be activated? Would it be Chaperone controlled, or something the kid could do?

>>34179141
Assuming IBF stands for Imaginary Best Friend, it depends on how the other world works. If it's more like the place the children goes to hide from the real world, then it could just be an ability that activates under stress. If it's more akin to a playland, full of fun stuff, it'd becloser to Tier 5 Pretending, so it'd need heavier rulings.

We actually had this sorta discussion in the IRC. It was sorta come up with that opening the portal would be more of a quest objective rather than a simple use of Level 5 Pretend.

>>34180968
What we've got so far RE: Boogeymen is that they're sort of the closest thing the setting has to a BBEG. Other monsters and Imaginary beings fear them, their motives are strange and inevitably malevolent, and actually defeating one would be an entire campaign arc.
>>
>>34181424
So Bogeymen are like Liches? Neat. Does this mean they come in shapes and sizes? Shall i craft or design one now that I'm awake?
>>
>>34181424
I can't help but think Boogiemen could be strange shape shifting creatures. Pretending to be imaginary friends sometimes. Or hell they can pretend to be adults. Or a particularly spooky tree. Just to give em some sneaking sense dread and paranoia.
>>
>>34181424
Okay, I can agree with that with one condition: why? What makes them so threathening? That's why I tried to think of a few reasons for that. They could be sick and thoughtful creatures that can make other monsters work together to traumatize a kid. They could be shapeless, ethereal entities that personify the biggest fears of a child (like in Harry Potter). They could be the devil in a troublemaker's shoulder, whispering pranks and tricks to their smallish ears.
>>
>>34183621
All of the above perhaps?

speaking as someone who has been working on his own big bad for this thing I'd feel something inherently parastic would be more an Evil imaginary friend's route. Creatures that feed on fear, happy fear (like adrenalin), or just enjoy making people miserable would be the way to go...

Then again we can essentially make Bogeymen the Imaginary friend equivalent of Liches. Something that the particularly twisted would strive for.
>>
>>34183839
All of the above just feels like too much shoehorned into a single monster.

Since kidpunk is supposed to leave in the air if the things are actually happening or if it's just the children's overactive imagination, I'd rather handle a creature that inspires troublemaking with care. Started sounding like schizofrenia IMO, and with a kid who created an imaginary friend that convinces them that they should do bad stuff sounds very fucked up. Also maybe unrealistic, but that's because I haven't seen any examples.

Being made out of a kids' fear sounds like a monster that could stand on its own. Just want a good name for it.

Now, an imaginary entity that develops a consciousness of its own, that could be problem. It could start commanding other imaginary monsters to do its bidding, for whatever reason. Perhaps it feeds of imagination? Like a tulpa/thoughtform? It then lingers past the original group of people who created it, lasting through generations of children? Could explain the Lich aspect you seem to want for it.
>>
>>34184105
I don't get how that would lead to it being clear if it's imaginary or magical.
>>
>>34185825
Uh... Sorry? It isn't supposed to lead to it being clear if it's imaginary or magical. Kidpunk is supposed to leave that up in the air, I think.

so what are current updates and stuff that needs work? Art stuff or crunch stuff?
>>
>>34160497
He probably does act too adult to be true kidpunk, but he does have a few traits going for him.

He creates high tech weaponry out children's toys, performs incredible feats both mental and physical, yet no matter what happens when he attempts any of this in view of his parents then everything falls apart for him while his parents are oblivious to his antics. You could probably create Stewie as a character easily, or possibly even use him as a bbeg for a campaign.

>>34192477
Considering we were considering babies and baby brothers and sisters to have "Beloved" and "Insufferable" traits... IE being the center of attention, and being "Fragile" we could have something along the lines of a Clever Baby as a villain. You can't punch it or insult it into submission because making a baby cry is pretty much asking for mass grounding.

Good.. Afternoon people! Waking up this late. Standard procedure.

Time to get things rolling today as well.

Do we have GM/DM yet?
>>
>>34194258
That could be any really young child who's smarter than he lets on, really. Does shit to older siblings and their friends because he knows that they can't retaliate and the parents will fall back on the "just a baby/doesn't know any better" excuse.

I think we said older kids should gain more SSP and younger kids should gain more PIP, but I'm not sure how that works.
>>
>>34210475
Older kids care about what other kids think of them more than what their parents want.

And younger kids get a little more benefit of the doubt for their transgressions, which would strike me as 'less' PIP loss rather than gaining more PIP.
>>
>>34210587
I get how it works fluff-wise, I don't get how it works mechanics-wise.
>>
>>34210601
Well PIP is essentially currency for equipment. (begging your parents for a toy, or getting a ride to the park)
SSP is currency for social encounters, and Nuh-Uh-ing Imagined actions. (Hey Timmy can you help me out for a sec? or "NUH UH that laser Didn't hit me")

That said we're working on things to spend SSP and PIP on.
>>
>>34210688
I know that. What I don't get is how age affects SSP/PIP generation, mechanics-wise.
>>
>>34210773
Good point. My guess is that he was just brainstorming, however from what i understand we want to keep things simple. and any Age Based SSP vs PIP generation could be worked in as a Treat or Trait.

From what I understand is that its been the week end. Our main crunch fag does work when at work. We all contribute mind you, but he is the bread and butter of formatting and legitimizing the ramblings of madmen.

I'm resident art fag by the way and I've just been a touch burnt out from a week and a half straight of art making. But hey I could add requests to do later and post completed stuff in the meantime.

Hey is there a read only version of the doc that I can share? I might want to show this to some friends, see if they'd be interested in running it or what classes they'd pick.
>>
>>34219561
Just link them the doc - although, it IS unfinished.
>>
Monday and work. It's about damn time.

Double-time. Gotta mix in crunch work and work work.

We currently changed Competitions for things not involving an opposing force, but instead things that are always in place, putting up the same type of resistance.

We're planning to use modifiers to see how big of a challenge you can handle in the various of types.
>>
Time for interactive development!

We're currently going over Traits and Vices, but we can't quite decide on what we want to do with them. Here's a few of the suggestions we've come up with. We'd just like to see which one appeals to you guys the most.

> 1.
Traits are static bonuses to stats. Vices are static penalties to stats. You get two Traits and one Vice.

This currently seems to be the simplest one with the least options, but also very easy to balance.

>2.
Traits have a Gain and a Loss. This was how we had Traits before, but it leaves us wondering about what to do with Vices and the idea was to throw them out.

>3.
Traits are static stat bonuses. Vices are static stat penalties. We add in two new sections, one for special bonuses (being a rich kid or an imaginative kid) and one for special penalties (being a poor kid or addicted to sugary treats!)

>4.
Your own suggestions. We've quite possibly overlooked some option that might work out better than the ones we have now.

Here's the link to the document with Traits so you can get a better grasp of what I'm asking about.

Apply values to them, with traits (as a bonus) being positive, and vices (as a penalty) being negative. Situational modifiers have a smaller value than static, and balanced modifiers have no value. Kids can have up to X quirks, and the values must equal 0.
>1/2
>>
>>34225128
>2/2
Smart: +1 Mnt, Quirk value 2
Homeschooled: +1Mnt, -1 Soc, QV 0
Selfish: Soc check penaly, cannot loan gear, QV-1.
Requires one more vice to reach a value of 0, but you get the idea.
>>
>>34225128
>>34225267
This. I like this. its sort of like a point buy system minimizing the min maxy qualities. We still gotta figure out what X means. Should it be up to Chaparon?
>>
>>34219561
We'll probably save the doc as a pdf and upload that into the thread when it's ready to be playtested.
>>
>>34225290
We'll consider this. Even though I feel like the Traits might as well be net-worth all of them. It's all about the amount of options necessary.

Here's the current version of Scrapper, the most updated type there is. How do you guys feel about this layout?

option 2 and just do without vices
>>
>>34223877
I feel like 2 is actually easier to be done than 1, so my vote goes for that. However, >>34225128 and >>34225267 seem to allow room for more customization.
>>
>>34230064
>However, >>34225128 and >>34225267 seem to allow room for more customization.
mechanically I think the current list already includes every bonus/penalty combination that >>34225128 offers
>>
>>34230260
Well, with enough options I'm sure that would happen. I haven't checked it since I suggested >>34158650, so if even more options were added I did not see.
