"Floor 14..."
Ding.
The elevator doors slide open, revealing yet another darkened floor with rows of empty cubicles and locked offices.
Sigh.

"Floor 15..."

I should really just stop counting these floors.

I am Itsukuma Masami, and I woke up this morning to a terrifying message telling me that my mother had been kidnapped by the same monsters who I may/may not be related to. Right now I'm inside the same building where I was likely born, riding the elevator up to go meet the man responsible. My two friends, Aiko and Maeda, stand beside me looking impatient and angry.

I thought it would be more exciting than watching numbers count on an elevator panel, but I'm not complaining! Nope, no complaints here about things being too boring. I would rather have too boring than constant fright.

"Floor 16... Finally"

"Aiko, Maeda." My heart feels like it's rising into my throat, "You two should stay in the elevator, I'll call you if they try anything."

Immediately, I can feel myself being squeezed between Aiko and Maeda, both of them gripping firmly onto my arms.

"You know we're not doing that." Maeda says, hugging my arm a bit too tightly, "We've come this far for you, we're not about to leave you alone now."

I don't want to say it, but I can't put into words how relieved I am to hear her say that.

The doors slowly slide open, and we prepare ourselves for the worst.

I can feel the cool touch of a card in my hand. I already know that it's the blue card, Julia, from the texture alone. Maeda and Aiko have assumed their defensive stances once again.

I'm not sure what we're expecting, but whatever it is, we're prepared.

The steel doors finally slide fully open, revealing the entirety of the floor.

It's almost completely empty, an entire floor of the building clad only in carpeting and florescent lighting. No chairs, no desks, no hint that anyone ever actually works on this floor.
Except for one hint, a familiar armor-clad man who seems to be waiting on the elevator.
Ugh. Not this again.

"Good morning, Priestess, I'm glad you've finally come to your senses and decided to pay your family a visit. I'll be escorting you to the top floor, you may need my authorization to get in."

>"Fine. But you stand on that side of the elevator and I'll stand on my side."

Ah.

Heh heh.

"T-Thanks but, no."

I press the elevator door button and dial in the number of the top floor. As the doors slide close, I can hear the sound of footsteps on the other side running in the opposite direction. Is he seriously going to try outrunning the elevator to the top floor?

The elevator slowly starts to whir and hum as it rises through the floors. Floor 20... Floor 25... Floor 30...

Really, from what I can remember, it feels like we're almost there.

"Maeda." Aiko has a kind of panic in her voice.
"Hmm?"
"Do you.. hear that?"

All of us hold our breath, over the dull drone of the machinery, we can hear it.
Yelling, clashing, the sound of chaos. The sounds of battle.
Those sounds, they're gradually getting louder.
Until those sounds are almost unbearable to listen to.

WHUMP

"EEK", I practically leap into Aiko's arms

Something, large, just landed on top of the elevator.
And if the rhythmnic thumps are any indication, it has started walking.

My every instinct is to run away, but I can't flee now. I can feel that I'm almost there.

Besides, I think the fighting is actually coming from this floor.
The sound of fighting is still erupting from the other side of the elevator door. Slowly the elevator starts to move as the sounds gradually grow quieter.

The footsteps on top of the elevator, though, have not stopped.

Something is now banging on the service hatch, every hit further denting the thin piece of aluminum acting as a trap door. Until-

"Mae! Aiko! Get back!"

The broad side of what looks to be an axe slams straight through the hatch, pulling it up off its hinges with a excrutiatingly loud bang.

"Priestessss....." A much higher pitched voice than the others comes from above.
"What do you want!?"
"The others are having a little, 'contest', to see who gets to take you to the top floor"

There's a rattle in the elevator shaft, the sound of the previous floor just erupted in a loud boom.

".. but that doesn't matter now, because I've won."

A loud buzz comes from the Elevator's speakers, the entire carriage is slowly down its ascent. Until eventually, it has stopped mid-floor between floors 32 and 33.

"Now, let's go Priestess. If you decide to stay there too long, well."
There's the sound of... Iron.. filing on iron. A slow, steady scraping noise that gradually increases in intensity.
"Then I'm not sure how much longer this elevator can hold all three of you like this."

Well, that's it.
I am going to kill him.
I can feel Julia's aura overtake me, the well-cut outfit replaces my sweat-covered school uniform. Before Aiko and Maeda can say anything, I've already jumped through the trap door and onto the top of the elevator.

I land on top of the elevator with a loud bang, the carriage rocks back and fourth with the joined weight of the monster and I.

This time, when I used Julia's power, it felt much different than the last time. Before, it felt as if I had someone constantly embracing me, but now, I'm not so sure. I can still feel her warmth, but now it feels more like a calm reassurance. It's almost as if I can feel her hand on my shoulder.

That must be why the part of me that was filled with terror didn't seem to make the jump to the top of the elevator. The little scared Masami that I once was stayed back, still being cradled in Aiko's arms down below.
She can stay there as long as she needs to. This is something I need to address without her.

"Oh? Did I hit a nerve?" The creature says, grinding his axe against a long steel cable. Several tiny fibers have already peeled themselves from teh bundle.
"Maybe if you feel so content at playing the hero, then I should speed up this little game we're playing." He grinds his axe against the cable a bit harder, a few more strands peel back.

"Let me make one thing clear to you."
"Please, Priestess, My name is-"
"I didn't ask your name."

The monster looks confused, but his axe has moved away from the cable, he seems to be readying himself.

"If you want to threaten me, that's fine, everyone seems to do that. But you have crossed a line from where is no coming back from."

His axe hovers near the elevator cable again,
"Heh, Priestess, scared little girl putting on a tough face? You're not very menacing, remember, just one swipe and your friends find out if they can fl-"

He doesn't get to finish that sentence. I've already closed the short distance standing between the two of us. Feeling its sudden weight in my hand, the Julia's sword has made itself known. With a shout and a thrust, it goes through the width of his body and pins him to the concrete elevator shaft behind him.

He reacts almost immediately, flailing and waving his axe at the steel wire behind me.

I step back, leaving him pinned to the shaft's wall with the sword.

He takes a swing at me with his axe, clumsily missing and hitting the stone masonry instead.

His stare turns downward at the sword that has impaled him to the wall. I hit him several times with my bare knuckles to get his attention. Strangely enough, the pain that I expected from punching something that should be solid steel never comes, instead only renewed confidence in the strength of my fists in its place.

"I would rather call myself a scared little girl" My fists take several more strikes to his head, I can see cracks forming in his facade.

"Then say that I'm a monster, like yourself!" My fist creates a giant crack extending through most of his head.

I pick up the hilt of the sword, still impaling him, and use it to throw him across the elevator's top. He's moments away from deterorating.

With a flick of my wrist, the blue aura from my sword has already constricted him, tearing him to tiny peices which all disintegrate in mid-air.

In it's place, a small card floats down to the top of the elevator. Even though, there's no marking on this one. He talked tough, but he really was a chump.

The elevator cable strains and twists, but it looks to be as steady as a rock.

My gaze focuses on the elevator cable, some strands have peeled, but it appears to have stabilized itself for now.
Then something drags my mind back to reality.
"Masami!"
"Hey! What's going on! Masami!?"
Oh right, they need to know that I'm fine.

Jumping back down into the elevator, I'm immediately assaulted by hugs from both Aiko and Maeda.

"You two, seriously. We need to get out of his elevator and-"
They're doing it again, examining the fringes and buttons of the Julie outfit. I gently slap their hands away.
"There's a time for that and it's not now."
"But, we've never seen this one before, and it looks really good on you!" Aiko says, almost pleading.
"You can do that later, we got to leave!"

Maeda pushes the button combination for the closest floor in, and the elevator slowly creeps upward several meters until it reaches its mark. We all step outside of the elevator, just in time for the doors to shut and for it to be called to a higher floor.

I let Julie slip off of me, leaving me with my still-sweaty school uniform. I don't feel the air of confidence surrounding me that once was, but I know that the card is nearby if I need it again.

"How much further do we have?"
"The place I woke up was on the fiftieth floor. So it has to be around there. We're on the- "

Wait, is that right? According to the sign, this is the 45th floor. Maybe I lost count back in the elevator, but the elevator reported this as the 33rd floor. Maybe the elevator was intentionally sabotaged to report the wrong floor.

"So.. We have 5 floors left to go?" Aiko says, sound a little cheery knowing that we're approaching our target.
"I.. guess so."
Really this whole place is confusing.

We dash across the empty office, outside the windows, some strange noises rattle and shake them.
Looking outside, we notice several more monsters, flying through the air. They are seemingly locked into fighting each other, and it looks like a really fierce aerial battle. Is this that 'contest' that guy spoke of? I don't see how fighting themselves is going to improve the odds of them taking me to the top floor.

We enter the stairwell and make our way upward, several floors up there's a janitor, sweeping the stairs with a clearly worn-down broom. He coughs to himself as we carefully pass by him.
He better not be another weirdo, too.

We make our way up another floor when suddenly,
A
Bug-thing
Blocks our path. He has a worn-down broom in one hand, and as we approach, he erupts into a coughing fit.

"Okay, this is silly"
The bug creature only hisses and clicks, it must be terrible having to live like that.
"Is there ANYONE in this building that's a human?"

It giant bug only snarls in response, Aiko and Maeda are clearly not having any of it.

"GET OUT OF THE WAY!" Maeda shouts, her already glowing-hands making several points of contact on the monsters chest. Each one explodes into a flurry of glowing punches. The monster backs off, allowing Aiko to go on the offensive.
She goes in with several hits to the now exposed, glowing areas on the monsters chest, but is immediately knocked by a strong claw, flinging her into the brickwork where she collapses into a heap.

"Aiko!" That does it, I'm feeling mad now.
Taking out the new card, I immediately jump into it.
...
And then nothing happens, no endless blue ocean, no giant mirror, no flashbacks and talks with the people who live inside of them. Putting it on feels more like I'm wearing my school clothes than it does the feeling of comfort and safety that the other cards provide. I wonder why that is.

The clothes I'm wearing are, kind of embarrassing, it looks like a witch outfit with a flowing blouse, a cape, and a miniskirt. It all feels very soft to wear.
I just know Aiko and Maeda will want to touch it.

I charge forward, I think one more good strike at his chest should do the trick, especially with how strong my punches have been lately!
Except, I wasn't watching his claws, how silly of me. The same arm that just knocked Aiko back comes back around and swats me away.

I lose my balance, and fall over the railing of the stairwell...

"MASAMI!" I can hear their voices, getting gradually fainter as they speed away from me. Only one word comes to mind as I'm falling.

"KYAAAAAaa-aaa"
I can't believe it.
And all I wanted to do.
Was see Mom again.

--

It feels like someone is lifting me, in their arms. My eyes slowly start to open, one blink at a time.
The falling sensation has stopped.
Handrails and staircases that were nearly speeding by my face are now suspended in time. Looking downward, I'm beginning to feel that I'm the one that's instead suspended in time.
My foot darts outward, it touches nothing. I look around to see what I'm standing on, and there isn't anything.

I look upward, two floors above me I can see Maeda putting the finishing touches on the monster. With a roar, she grabs the monster and flings it over the railing.

"hhhhhHHHHIIIIISSsssssss-" the monster swoops past my face as it continues it's long descent down the stairwell. Every few seconds the sound of clangs and clunks echo their way from the bottom floors.

Maeda peers over the railing, and spots me. Her face looks as if she could pass out at any second.
When she sees me, her legs give out, and she slumps against the handrailing. Even from here I can hear her crying and sobbing.

"Maeda! It's fine! I'm okay! I'll be right there!" I find myself trying to fly up to her. Yet, no matter how hard I try, I'm stuck floating with no control over direction.
I manage to hook my foot around one of the railings and drag myself back onto the stairwell.
A card that lets me float? That can't be right, I probably just need to practice with it more.

Rushing up the stairs, I get to the floor that Maeda and Aiko are on. Maeda still looks upset, but calms down considerably when she sees me.
Then I also notice, that Maeda is supporting Aiko's weight, and she has a nasty bruise on her arm.

"AIKO!" I yell, running up to her, but she waves me off.
"Masami, I'm fine, let's just go. They're on the next floor."

We continue to the next floor, but something is worrying me watching Aiko and Maeda walk. Even though Maeda is supporting Aiko, she looks like she's having a hard time getting up the stairs. I'm standing outside the 50th floor door while Aiko is still hobbling with Maeda supporting her.

"Aiko, are you seriously okay?"
"I-I just sprained my ankle. I can walk it off. Let's go."

>"No you will not, Maeda, stay here with Aiko."
>"Wait here, Aiko, Maeda and I will be back in a minute."
>"If you think so."

Okay, had a slight delay there. But I'm back

Looks like a tie, so a coin toss it is.

1. Stay here with Aiko
2. walk it off.

"Aiko, are you sure you're okay?"
"Yes, I'm fine, I'll feel better in a minute."

That's not good enough for me.

I transform into Haruko's card, allowing the flowing red outfit to overtake my clothes. I walk to the other side of Aiko and gracefully sweep her into my arms.
She squeaks in surprise, and then taps on my shoulder as if she wants me to put her down. I don't, I can still tell that she's in a lot less pain this way, even if she doesn't want to admit it.
Plus, she's almost weightless like this.

"Just stay off that foot for a few minutes."

Huh, that's strange.
Haruko's firey golden aura, the light that her card gives off. Usually it shines outward from the outfit like a very bright lamp. Now it seems to be shining inward, casting itself onto Aiko.

I look at Aiko's face, and notice something,
"Aiko? Hey! Aiko!"
"Uhmm, Hmm?" She looks up at me.
"You fell asleep."

Maeda is really starting to look worried now. She presses her hand up against Aiko's head to check her temperature.

"I fell- oh. I guess I did" Aiko blushes slightly. "I-I'm sorry, it just feels so, warm here. It feels warmer than the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in." she hugs me a bit tighter and falls back asleep again.
"Huh?" Is all I can say to that. I don't remember her reacting this way before to this card.

Neat. I have no idea what Haruko is supposed to do now.
>>
>>34171606
It seems still in line with Haruko representing "a safe place".
>>
>>34171693
Then why was her name Justice? I can't think of anything else that could be, and I certainly don't think of Justice as a safe place.

Maeda opens the door for us, and we step through, onto the fiftith floor.

It's almost exactly the same way I remember it being. There's an empty breakroom along one wall. The other walls have computers and other expensive office equipment humming the same sum as the florescient lights. This floor, too, seems completely abandoned.
Except for one figure.

He's leaning against a wall, occasionally glancing at a round clock. His head perks upward as he sees us approach.

"Priestess, That wasn't a very nice thing to do to family." It's that guy who won't leave me alone. "Though I admit, thinking back on it, I do see the humor. Oh? what happened to your friend."
"None of your business." Maeda spits at him

"Then...Do you need me to carry her? That can't be easy on-"
"NO!" I immediately shout, "No no no, this is fine. I can carry her."
Aiko stirs in my arms a bit, but immediately curls her head into my chest.
"So why are you here? Didn't you get the hint?"

The metallic monster points to a door, "I'm here because, again, you'll need my help getting in to see him. I'll unlock the doors for you if you just follow me-"
"Hold it, I didn't come here to see 'him', whoever 'him' is. I came here to get my Mother back."

He seems taken aback by this, "Your mother? You mean Empress? But she's in a- Never mind. Let's just go."

>"Maybe you didn't get the message, I'm going on my own, you can stay here."
>"Lead the way, just stay far, far ahead of me."

"NO!" Aiko jumps slightly at my yell. "Where. Is. My. Mom!?"
"Priestess, if you'd let me explain-"
"No no no no NO! I am not seeing ANYONE or doing ANYTHING Until I see Mom. That's final. The only reason I even came back to this building is because I thought something had happened to her."

He groans, before sighing in defeat. "This way, please."

He walks down a corridor, unlocking a few doors as he passes. Past the same bored looking security guard that was there the last time I came this way. This time, instead of making a turn for a certain room. We go straight until we pass by a series of very ornately decorated wooden doors.

He walks up to a set of them, "Your mother is in here."
"I don't believe you. How do I know you're telling the truth?"
He sighs, and knocks on the door. No answer.
He knocks on the door again, No answer a second time.

Finally, he opens the door.

Sitting on separate sites of a long, wooden table are three people. On one side sit two men who are currently looking down at some kind of blueprint, hastily making marks and scribbles on a sheet of paper. Some kind of device is pointed toward the center of the table that whirrs and clicks.

The more important detail of the room is on top of the table at the center. There appears to be a square pillow, with a row of trinkets and cards surrounding it. A low, deep hum eminates from that area of the table. Floating above it is another card, one that glows and shines brilliantly.

And sitting on the side closest to the pillow, is Mom. Her hair is glowing again, and she's pulsing with the same kind of vibrant energy that flows through the card. Almost as if they're connected.

"MOM!" I shout, causing Aiko to jump again
"She can't hear you right now."

He looks up at the guys at the table, who look extremely surprised to actually see someone interrupt their 'meeting'. One of them stands up and walks over to us.
"How much longer?"
"Five minutes."

Suddenly, he turns around and shuts the door. I can hear the lock click back into position. Turning back to me; he explains himself,
"Priestess, you'll be able to see her in five minutes. She is doing a very important experiment and cannot be interrupted. Now if you would follow me-"

"W-!" I begin, unable to form my next sentence.

Maeda is in shock, or has been oddly silent this whole time. Aiko leans her head back over into my chest. I only have a few words that come to mind.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY MOM?!"

Okay, we didn't get as far as I was hoping.

But maybe we can leave this hellhole next time!

Thanks for playing everyone who hasn't gone to bed yet.

I do have one more question for you:
What were you expecting to see?
>>
>>34173199
So... wait patiently for 5 minutes?
I'm not really into this exclamation of anger thing.
It looks like she's creating a card or something. Nothing to get pissed over.
>>
And hey, if everything goes according to plan: Then next runtime should be tomorrow. If not then Sunday.

Going to make up for lost time if I can.
>>
>>34173245
Her in an ordinary business meeting. Completely ordinary.
>>
>>34173245
>What were you expecting to see?
Yeah, >>34173287

Nothing odd at all. I'm not joking. This is actually what I was expecting.
>>
>>34173268
Good observation!

Will Masami be able to wait patiently for five minutes?
>>
>>34173245
Thanks for running.

I had actually expected mom to be not in the building at all currently.

>>34173268
It's a bit odd, but then, Masami has been pretty agitated the whole time, and now mom is 'catatonic' during a experiment, so its somewhat understandable.
>>
>>34173321
>Will Masami be able to wait patiently for five minutes?
She's wearing Haruko, isn't she? Just change from supporting Aiko to supporting herself.
>>
>>34173245
thanks for running
and this, actually:>>34173287

>>34173268
>looks like she's making a card
>all the things that attacked us drop cards
...
maybe this was all just a trial? that'd explain our mom busy working on her own will(?) and the janitor not giving a fuck in the stairs
>>
>>34173320
>>34173287
I'm actually glad that you're taking this in stride. Because going berserk here, like I was worried would happen at this stage, would be really hard to get out of unless you grabbed Aiko and Maeda and flew away via the rooftops.

Also, question for the players: now that you're here, do you want to go visit Mr Wizard who has been so eager to meet you?

This won't factor into the next OP post, it's just an opinion poll if you actually want to do it.
>>
>>34173416
>do you want to go visit Mr Wizard who has been so eager to meet you?
Obviously.

With mom. That is not negotiable.
>>
>>34173416
>do you want to go visit Mr Wizard who has been so eager to meet you?
Together with mom, sure. Would be a waste not to at this point.
>>
>>34173416
>I'm actually glad that you're taking this in stride.
I wouldn't be if they had wires hooked up to her or anything like that. Scientific instruments are scary.

But just glowing? Sure, why not. How is card babby formed.
>>
>>34173369
>>looks like she's making a card
>>all the things that attacked us drop cards
>...
So? We're probably made from a card too, man. Don't be racist.
>>
>>34173416
let's see what mom says about it first
and yeah, no going there without her
>>
Now, about Haruko, I noticed some confusion about that card.

Want me to spoil it? Or just give a hint?
>>
>>34173539
a hint is fine
more wouldn't be so good
>>
>>34173539
A hint. We can get the spoiler by asking Mom in character.
>>
>>34173522
>let's see what mom says about it first
She's going to be incredibly pissed and not want us meeting him, probably.

But we want to anyway. Because we came so far and maybe they'll stop fucking nagging us if we show up. Also Maeda can get some answers herself.
>>
>>34173577
>>34173562
The hint is: You were right about her being a 'safe place', the confusion seems to be what her aura entails

I'll leave it at that.
>>
Also, archived

I also wanted to say: Thanks for sticking with me for as long as you have. Now that I've done 16 of these threads, I'm beginning to realize how slow the first threads actually were in comparison.
>>
>>34173719
The first thread was pretty cool because we got to climb on top of a light and act petulant.

But it was slow.
>>
>>34173719
>>34173748
What would have happened if we had made our roll to jump into the vent?
>>
>>34173773
You would have crawled around in the sub ceiling of the building.

It was VERY possible to escape from Mom early on. In fact you dodged more than a few opportunities to do so (like just leaving the building at the elevators or aforementioned escape via the ceiling).

The catch is: If you did that, chances are you would have been captured by you-know-who. Especially considering that was during a time when you weren't going to school with the magic people and had no cards that you could use.
>>
Is it wrong that I kind of want to capture as many cards as we can on the way out of the building? They'll probably still be fighting.
>>

I like this anon.
