Ranthix lays another set of weights on Rowan’s back. “AGAIN!” he yells, trying to goad her into doing more pushups.

Rowan groans underneath the stack of weights, which crush her into the padded floor. Ranthix has increased her handicap several times since she stopped being able to rise off the ground, and she’s no closer to doing anything this time. “I can’t move,” she chokes out, barely managing to breathe beneath the load. “I can’t even breathe.”

You laugh stupidly under your own weights, despite it being nearly impossible to inhale again after you’ve let your precious air escape. It’s worth it. “You’re not... supposed… to move,” you say breathlessly. “You’re… supposed to… try to move.”

Ranthix throws another twenty pounds on your back. You feel like your head’s about to pop off your shoulders when he shouts, “AGAIN!”

You growl and struggle in vain against the sheer mass stacked against you, straining every fiber of your being to get your body off the floor.

“I don’t’ see wha… what we’re… accomplishing,” Rowan heaves, scowling at Ranthix’s boots.
>>
>>34166730

The demon kneels by Rowan, suddenly. “IF YOU CAN TALK YOU CAN FIGHT,” he barks, just an inch away from her face. His expression is livid. “STAND UP, SPAWNLING. STAND UP!”

Moriah comes jogging by on the indoor track for the whatevereth time, and slows to a halt by your scene. “That looks hard,” she observes, walking over and sitting down on a bench. She takes a drink from her water bottle while watching you and Rowan. She seems bemused at your plight, which she does not share part in.

Rowan grunts and rolls to the side, causing all the weights piled up on her to fall off in an avalanche of crashing metal. “I can’t do this,” she says, getting to her feet. “If he seriously yells at me one more time –“

Ranthix seethes at the sight of Rowan abandoning her assigned task. “YOU HAVE FAILED,” he declares. “IT IS NOT A BIG SURPRISE.”

“Flip you,” Rowan replies, scowling at the Infernus. Oh man. Ro broke out the flip word. She’s pissed. Ro leaves in a huff toward some of the more standard weightlifting gear. The rich, smoky flavor of hot anger and frustration burns off of her as she goes.

“YES, THAT’S RIGHT. RUN AWAY FROM YOUR ALL OF YOUR PROBLEMS, DEMONBANE,” he yells after her, a huge, baleful smile on his face. He turns and stoops over you, and scoops off all of your encumberment in one go. “YOU CAN STOP FIGHTING NOW, SPAWNLING,” he tells you. “YOU HAVE EARNED A BREAK FOR DEFEATING YOUR WINGTREADING SURROGATE SIBLING IN MATTERS OF PERSEVERANCE.”
>>
>>34166748
It’s all you can do to roll onto your back and try to catch your breath after having had your ribcage crushed for the better part of twenty minutes. The floor is all spongey and not too bad for lying down for a while.

Ranthix walks off and picks up his big gallon jug of water, dumps a little on the top of his head, and then guzzles half of it down.

Moriah looks down at you from her bench with an even expression, and then turns her gaze onto Ranthix as he screws the lid back on his water and walks over to the window to have al look out over the city. “You were right,” says Moriah. “This is fun.”

You chuckle tiredly to yourself. “Rowan doesn’t think so.”
>>
>>34166785

Moriah doesn’t reply right away. “She’s just not used to Inferian culture,” she says after a moment’s pause. “It’s thrilling to see this kind of training technique in person.”

Hey, I mean, if she wants to get her bone on, that's only the business of her, Ranthix, and the state of California's age of consent laws.
>>
“It’s a little more thrilling to actually do the training technique in person,” you reply wryly. “If you’re going to get all discovery channel-y about it, like, why don’t you jump in?”

“The thrills exceed my daily thrills threshold,” Moriah replies flatly. “It’s too bad Rowan doesn’t embrace it like you do.”

“Well, she’s usually not so bitchy,” you say. “She’ll figure it out sooner or later. Not like she has a choice, really. Ranthix happens to be my most loyal subject.”

“Yes. Of your many subjects,” Moriah points out.

You ponder on that. Then you remember what Moriah said about watching stuff being thrilling. You sit up then, a stupid grin on your face. “So uh…watching Ranthix gives you the thrills, huh?” you say.

Moriah catches the hint in your voice and looks at you suspiciously. “… what kind of thrills are you talking about exactly?”

“Y’know,” you say, your smile getting wider. “I mean. Totally not judging. We’ve both seen how he pulls off Hawaiian shirts, right?”

Your badgering has the intended effect on her. “I wasn’t talking about… I’ve just read a lot about Thultal, okay?” she says, a bit flustered. “There’s a lot of interesting history about them.”

“And are they all like, huge and ripped as all get out?” you ask, glancing over at Ranthix, and maybe maybe not checking him out just a little bit. It doesn’t count if he doesn’t know it happened. “Yeah,” you say with a nonjudgmental shrug, “I can see why you’d find him interesting.”
>>
So who else is really curious about Orias? I'm hoping he's less of an ass than Waldo is. Maybe he'll actually be cool. That'd be really cool if he turns out to be cool.
>>
>>34168347

“If you keep talking about this, I’m going to go back to running,” Moriah says.

You doubt that, since she looks kind of tired, but you figure you don’t want to upset her. “You think I should go see if Rowan’s like, Rowan mad, or if she’s real mad?” you say, glancing over where Rowan’s working some machine with a bunch more weight than you’d be able to do.

Moriah joins you in observing Rowan for a brief moment. “I think she’s mature enough not to be too stressed out about Ranthix. Maybe you should just leave her to work through it herself.”

>Mm. I’m just going to make sure. (Go talk to Rowan.)
>Eh, you’re right. She’s a big girl.

You look away from Rowan. “I’d want to be left alone if I was mad,” you say. “She’s a big girl. You’re right.” Sitting with Moriah just now reminds you of you sitting in her room, laying on the floor and trying to do magic while she tried to coach you on flow and power and stuff. “Magic’s cool and all,” you say, “but you know, we’ve put months into it and all I can do is muster up wimpy white fire.” It’s not even blue fire. Blue fire would’ve been so much cooler. “In your professional opinion as wizardess extraordinaire, am I ever going to rank up there with like, Gandalf or Christian Bale in The Prestige?”

Moriah doesn’t really like your pick of magicians. “Gandalf is hundreds of years old,” she says. “You didn’t even know magic existed until three or four months ago. And all Christian Bale did was erh.” She halts abruptly in a kind of weird way. “Flashy parlor tricks,” she continues, as if nothing happened.

You let the thing slide. “Well, should I just come back to it when I’m older, wiser, and like, twice as badass?”

Moriah answers with surprising mettle. “No. If you leave it alone now, it’s only going to get harder as you get older.” Her demeanor softens a degree, and she exudes a trace amount of guilt. “I haven’t been the best teacher,” she says. “I talked to Father about it. I’ve been going about it all wrong, trying to make you understand things like I do. Really, you need to find out how you can understand magic in your own way.”

“What’s that mean?” you ask.
>>
>>34170061
Moriah glances around, and seeing nobody present, holds out a gloved hand. “When I want light, this happens,” she says. A ghostly, luminescent aura rises from her fingertips for a moment. She snaps her hand shut, and it’s gone. “When you want light, you get a ball of fire.”

“Fire’s easier than ghost lights,” you say, feeling kind of down you couldn’t even manage that much.

“Exactly,” says Moriah. “You’re good with fire. Like when that angel was staying with you, you could pretend you were a pyromancer, because you understand what it’s like to work with fire. What if we can coach out your talents along that route? The other things, illusions, inculcation, reading ambient energies in your surroundings – all of that will fall into place once you have a scaffolding built up.”

>So my white fire ball is really just a seed that will grow into a huge raging inferno tree?

If we can cast light by using our fire stuff, maybe we'll be okay at casting some kind of darkness because of our shadow powers.

Would trying to do both at once create no visible effect? In-route to learning how to cast counter-spells or something.

“Inculcation?” you ask.

“Sorry. Enchanting. Inculcation is the more formal term,” Moriah answers.

You feel your trivia points go through the roof. “So, is fire like, the base for all my magic, then? Because I kind of doubt that, seeing as I’m as good with sitting in dark rooms as I am in rooms that are on fire.”

“It would make sense if your archetype was both, now that I’m thinking about it. Or more,” she says. “You’re a mix. Whatever the core of your magical talent is, it’s likely just as varied as you are.”

“I get it,” you say. “Like how all my landmaster stuff is colored by me being half demon. It’s just this automatic type of thing, right?”

“That sounds like a good description,” she replies.

“So one day,” you say to yourself, “my little white fireball seed will blossom into a towering inferno tree with shadowy limbs that shoot lightning from the tips.”

Moriah gives you a curious look. “Where are you getting lightning from?”

“Firebenders,” you say. “All the good firebenders can shoot lightning.”

She doesn’t answer immediately. “It might not work like that, Sierra.”

You’ll hold out your hopes, though. You already have a lightning sword after all. “We’ll see. First we got to get this tree’s scaffolding up though so it can start growing though, I guess.”

Then Ranthix shouts at everyone. “BREAK OVER!”

--

You and Rowan are going deus-a-mono against Ranthix on the sparring mats at the gym. Although, this is kind of a weird situation, since all of you are fighting glamored up like none other. Moriah cheers you on silently and expressionlessly and without moving all to much from the sidelines. Maybe cheering on is a strong term.

Ranthix stands low and angry looking at one side, while you and Rowan are side by side. Ro seems apprehensive about the idea of trying to attack Ranthix.

You know how this usually turns out, so you don’t blame her. Still, it’s two to one, and you’re not the lightweight you used to be when it comes to being all fancy with kungfu and what not.

“Where’s he weak at?” Rowan asks you, keeping her eyes locked on target. She’s obviously expecting some kind of feint or quick strike, which is not a bad call.

“I HAVE NO WEAKNESS,” Ranthix shouts.

>Nowhere, so everywhere is just as good an idea to try to get from.
>If you can get him in a headlock from behind, you’re getting somewhere.

It looks like something I might actually like, but the fact that I have to try to figure out what the fuck is happening with the deviantart gallery thing makes me not want to bother. If it had things listed in order where I could just click/scroll through, and had the different series listed in whatever order you're supposed to read them in, then I'd definitely read it all>

Get out of my head Charles!

They're all pretty standalone, since he's never gotten around to doing the overarching story implied by a lot of it. Order of them being posted is good enough really, which is the order the gallery sorts by default.

“You heard the man. He’s good everywhere. Everywhere’s just as good to try to get him from,” you tell Ro, staying light on your feet. You never know for sure what to expect when Ranthix is involved.

“That’s not good advice,” Rowan replies, assuming some martial arts stance you’re not familiar with.

“Fine, you want good advice? It’s about the journey. Worry about fighting. Don’t worry about winning. Blah blah blah,” you say, infinite wisdom and patience oozing from every pore.

“Go Ranthix,” says Moriah.

You and Rowan feel that now is the time to strike. You both surge forward at the same instant, with no warning. Maybe it’s your super senses or something. You can get in tune with this kind of thing.

Ranthix isn’t just made of muscle though. He’s clever and dangerous as he is huge, and he knows how to use every ounce of strength on his hulking frame. When you and Rowan come up on him and try to split up so you can flank him, he slips off to the side so that he’s only facing you. He comes up fast and hard. You were expecting it, though.

You dodge under his attempted grab and dance backwards out of the range of two swift kicks and an elbow strike. You manage to mostly throw yourself out of the way when he charges to run you over, and you pop back up on your feet and rejoin with Rowan.
>>
>>34173387
You both know outflanking him’s not going to work. He’s expecting it. You have to do something he doesn’t expect, but not be stupid about it. Most of the things he wouldn’t expect involve frontal attacks, so you figure you’ll do that. Rowan picks up on your plan and sticks by your side, even as Ranthix comes around for another pass.

Ranthix charges the two of you. Except, you know, instead of trying to get out of the way and getting grabbed, you and Rowan run toward him. Then you both see the opening, and time seems to slow down. Ranthix is putting a shoulder forward, hoping to knock the two of you aside with sheer momentum.

That’s when you break up. You stop and throw your weight forward, and Rowan goes into a slide to skirt under Ranthix’s tread. Then the demon collides with you. Unsurprisingly, you’re knocked back, hard. Lucky for you though your bones don’t break as easily as reagular people’s, which is why you were where you were.

Ranthix smashing into you has put him enough off balance to give Rowan a chance to get up behind him and leap onto his back. Of course, Ranthix goes to rip her off, but her strength allows her to hold on despite his best efforts to dislodge her.

Recovering from getting knocked back, you stagger to your feet and tackle into Ranthix’s upper chest, cannonballing as high as you can into him to get him off balance as Rowan heaves from behind.
>>
>>34173415
His foot slips, and he topples backward, smashing Rowan and also you under his weight. Ranthix laughs heartily, while you manage a slightly humored groan of pain as you try to recover from having the wind knocked out of you.

Rowan fidgets and crawls out from beneath Ranthix, which is good, because you were afraid she might have gotten smashed to death. It’s been known to happen.

Moriah claps politely from her spectator’s seat.

“GOOD OF YOU TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF MY TAILLESS STATE TO THROW ME OFF BALANCE,” Ranthix congratulates you and Rowan.

“Tail?” Rowan asks, pushing herself to her feet.

“You can’t unbalance Ranthix usually,” you say, pushing off of the demon in question and getting to your feet. “But he relies a lot on the tail thing.”

She seems put out. “So we probably wouldn’t have grounded him if this was a real fight,” she says.

“OF COURSE NOT, SPAWNLING,” Ranthix says, leaping from the ground to his feet in a single movement. “EVEN YOUR ENTIRE DEMONBANE FAMILY FAILED TO DESTROY ME. THE TWO OF YOU ALONE WOULD HARDLY POSE A THREAT – THOUGH WITH TIME YOU WILL.”

“It’s not about the winning or losing,” you remind Ro, allowing a great deal wisdom to sound in your voice. “It’s about the journey.”

Ro chuckles at your assessment. “Good round then, win or lose,” she says. She then takes her position at one edge of the mat, and gets back into her serious business stance. “Who’s ready for round two?”

Rowan and Ranthix start kind of maybe getting along better through repeated sparring. Nothing like punching somebody in the face to really start understanding them. Eventually though, you and her both start running low on batteries. Even Moriah looks like she’d rather be lying down than sitting down. Ranthix senses the decrease in energy, and calls off the next round. “ENOUGH. I TIRE OF YOUR REPEATED FAILURE, AS SHOULD YOU,” he says, walking suddenly off the mat to go gather his bag and stuff.

You and the others go and change into spare clothes that aren’t drenched with sweat, and join with Ranthix as you’re walking toward the exit.

“That was pretty exciting,” Rowan comments, satisfied in her fatigue.

“Yeah I knew you’d come around,” you say, giving her a playful shove. She almost runs over Moriah, and you feel kind of bad. “Sorry.”

“No need to apologize,” Moriah says.

Ranthix meanwhile glares at anyone that dares look in your direction.

>Hey, when do you think the new demons are going to get into town?
>So what's the verdict. Would you come along again if I invited you?
>Shoot Waldric a text. You need to meet with him about conclave stuff, preferably without Isaac hovering over your shoulder.
>So who’s coming up next time I take a trip up to Muir? Any takers? Huh? …guys?

“You know, having you guys along was actually pretty cool,” you say to Ro and Moriah.

“Did you think I might not be cool?” Rowan asks, frowning at you.

“Uh. So,” you say, changing the subject, “I’m probably going up to Muir Woods in a couple days,” to kill stuff and drink its blood, “and you know, it’s kind of cool this time of year – lots of fog. You know, nature stuff. Since we’re all here, just thought I’d mention that, just in case anybody wanted to like, I don’t know, come up with me, maybe I could figure something out.”

Nobody says anything.

“I’ll come with you,” Moriah says suddenly. “I’ve been curious about what you get up to by yourself up there.”

“Well if you’re coming along,” you say, thinking of the implications, “there’s all kinds of stuff we can do. Like, there’s all these cool groves and trails and stuff. And even some trails that you can’t see unless you’re me, specifically.”

Rowan seems guilty.

“Don’t sweat it, you have books to read and vacation to do nothing during,” you tell her. You’d be slippery as all hell in her position, too.

Moriah speaks again. “I’ll need to mention it to Father beforehand. I’ll let you know for sure tonight.”
>>
>>34174396

“Cool,” you say. You whip out your phone, remembering other people you need to do stuff with, namely Waldric. You scroll down to EDWARD CULLEN and text him a message. ‘yo wally I am thinkin we need 2 meet soon by ourseelves,’ you type, ‘+ talk a bout conclav things txt me bck k?’ You send it off. You don’t know his schedule, but he probably knows yours is a whole lot of absolute nothing. “Hey, by the way Ranthix, what do you think those hellborn guys are doing right now?”

“LYING AND DECEIVING,” says Ranthix. “WHAT ELSE?”

“Well, like, what does that specifically mean? I mean, why are they being all conspicuous if they’re so good at illusions and making things blend in?”

“NOW YOU SPEAK WISDOM,” he says sagely. “WHY INDEED, SPAWNLING. WHY INEED. I WOULD VENTURE A GUESS THAT IT HAS TO DO WITH BAGS OF MONEY.”

There’s a thought.

I just had a thought.

You know how Voice of One Thousand Teeth is supposed to fucking destroy unarmoured enemies? And you know how we have Stain of Sin, which applies armour piercing to either a weapon or a body part?

Well, we got Shadow Self now, so we have a shadow that we should be able to put SoS on.

Huh. I actually really hope that combo works. It might not be too useful unless we're in a grapple, but getting grappled is actually one of our biggest weaknesses, since we don't have much in the way of raw physical strength.
