You sigh irritably. “It appears you'll have to excuse us, Master. My other companions have finished their task.” You push yourself up into a proper sitting position, rather than the slouched over posture you'd unconsciously adopted. {We'll be there momentarily. There is a bench shaded by a palm tree near the gate, wait for us there.} Darzi's response is immediate. {Hurry up, Chrys has started talking to your cloak and the last thing we need is another lunatic in this little group of ours.} You glare at nothing in particular, staring off into the middle distance. Chrys is talking to Ricky? What could they be talking about?

Your Master interrupts your thoughts by snapping his fingers. “Quit starring into space like some slack-jawed idiot, boy. Now come on, get up and get going so Rasim here can start making my dinner. The boy's cooking is atrocious, keep needing him to toss it out and do it over. Oh he'll get it eventually, I'm sure. You weren't much better at fi-” You slowly tune your Master's voice out, slipping into an almost meditative calm as you stare uncomprehendingly at the ancient Vatis. He gets into these loops where he seems to talk seemingly without end, yet manages to say nothing. In a way it's impressive.

You're snapped out of your trance by a hand on your shoulder. Skull Kid is shaking you gently. You wave him off, pushing yourself to your feet and stretching out. You roll your shoulders, arch your back, and crack your neck. Your Master has stopped talking thankfully, and has pushed himself up to his feet using his cane. “I'll show you three to the door, least an old man can do for his guest.”

Mortia looks mildly concerned, and Skull Kid is of course unreadable. Perhaps if you did not know your master, you would mimic Mortia's sentiments. He hobbles busily along next to you on your way to the stairs, his young apprentice taking long strides to try and keep up. When you reach the stairs a platform of ice manifest on one side and your master steps onto it, the bottom melting and solidifying strategically so that it glides smoothly down the winding staircase.

“Master, before I go I seek your advice on several topics.” Your Master rolls his hand, a gesture indicating you should get on with it already. “I have been making steady progress towards becoming a Grandmaster of the water element, I feel, but you always said that becoming a Grandmaster wasn't like advancing through the other levels. What did you mean by that?” He sighs, stepping off of the moving platform he'd created and onto the flagstone floor of his bathhouse. “Do you know why I only ever reached Grandmaster in Water and Nature?” You shake your head, slowly. “It's because attaining that level of power and mastery of an element changes who you are on a very basic level. I couldn't truly perfect my abilities with another element even if I wanted to. It's simply too taxing on the body, and invites insanity.”

In an uncharacteristically somber tone your Master continues. “I've known far too many good Vatis in my time who overreached and had to be put down as a result. You, you have more raw potential than I ever did. I wouldn't be surprised if you perfected three, or even four elements in your lifetime. That being said, you musn't attempt too much too quickly. Do not take advantage of short cuts or artifacts that advance your understanding, for you won't truly understand how or why you wield the power you do. They will limit your growth in the long run. Remember, we live for centuries Mikhael. You have plenty of time to advance your understanding of the world and its mysteries.”

>>>Reaching Grandmaster rank in Water.

>>>Recent events, your old colleagues, and your family.

man these would have been best. We should be leaving so they might not even want to meet him. And if they do it's only more risk.
>>
He clears his throat. “Now, with the lecture on patience out of the way. You'll soon hit a wall in your advancement. You won't be able to truly grasp that last insight you need to perfect water magic, though you may glimpse hints of it. Many Vatis will isolate themselves from society in a place important to their element. Personally, I spent a year at sea. Sailing from one port to the next and plying my skills as both a pirate and a mercenary. Other Water Vatis I knew swore themselves to Pani, and perfected their craft through prayer and meditation. You must find your own way, in the end.”

That wasn't exactly the answer you were hoping for, but it's something to think about. “And, another thing. What do you think of the Spice? It offers untold power, but I worry about addiction and madness.” Your master shakes his head slowly. “Avoid it, at all cost. There is a reason the process used to refine the spice was forgotten. It corrupted the hearts and minds of our people, turned them into little more than violent weapons to be unleashed upon the enemy. While a valuable last resort, I would caution against its use unless absolutely necessary. Just one use has already scattered your eyes with the harsh blue of an addict.”

You frown. On some level it was the answer you'd expected, but some part of you craves that feeling of god-like power. The ability to crush anyone and everyone you saw, reducing them to little more than ash or a pin cushion as you pleased. You banish those thoughts from your mind and move on to slightly more lighthearted conversation. “What has happened since my Banishment? It has been nearly a month now, surely there is some news you have for me.”

(2/4)
>>
A twinkle comes to your Master's eyes. “Ahhh, you'll be glad to hear that the Shahzada''s gardens have been burnt to the ground. The Shah himself ordered them reduced to ash, a waste of resources. It was quite the scandal, the Shah publicly admonishing his son when he'd banished you not even a week earlier for doing the same.” While you're pleased to hear that little shit Kadir's garden was burned to the ground, a deep seated, boiling anger rises from within you like thick, acidic bile in your throat. How could the Shah cast you off to die so callously, and then a few days later do exactly what you'd requested?

Your master moves on. “Rajani Demir, old Boulos' apprentice? She attained her Master's robes recently. She's really come into her own since leaving the home of her Master. One to watch out for. Ismail Uzun, that little bastard you used to cause so much trouble with, caused a scandal amongst the community recently when he adopted his bastard child into his household. Illegal, of course. Highly, highly illegal. It could've gotten him castrated. The Shah didn't seem to care though, and no action was taken. Several others have followed in his wake. Eser Demirci has vanished recently. Wandered out of town one day claiming he was voyaging into the Pa'vala in search of his ancestral home. Took all seven of his apprentices with him. Poor bastards, they'll drop like flies out there.”

(3/4 or 5)
>>
Your Master strokes his goatee absentmindedly. “That little brother of yours recently secured an important trade agreement with the Aleamondians. The Shah is talking about giving him a position as the Ambassador to those backwards fanatics. I don't envy the man. Your father still hasn't found someone to betroth your younger sister to, apparently after your the Abdul-Hakim name was tarnished and some think of your family as having the Traitor's Blood. That's about all I've heard. I'll pass on that you're alive to your mother and father, and tell them you're doing well in the great wide world. It will put their minds at ease.”

You're standing at the door, but you don't want to leave. This is one of the few times you've felt truly relaxed in weeks and you're loathe to step out and voyage once more into the unknown. You reach out to Darzi, Fulvia, Chrys, and Profectus via the brooches. {Would any of you like to meet my Master? I'm sure if I asked he would be happy to have everyone over for a meal.} Your mind is assaulted by four voices at once, you wince as a headache splits your skull. {One at a time, one at a time!}

Darzi speaks first. {Is that where you've been this whole time, Mik? I thought we agreed that you would wait outside the gate! Do you know what would've happened if you were caught? They would've had every guard in the city hunting for your head! We will absolutely not be staying in El-Amin any longer than we must!} Chrys speaks next, thankfully calmer than Darzi. {While I would enjoy meeting your Master and hearing his wisdom, I must agree with Darzi. You may introduce us at some later date.}
(4/5)
>>
Fulvia's is the next voice to enter your mind. {I would caution against staying in the city. While shopping, Darzi was recognized by a group of guards and we were forced to make a quick exit.} Well, that at least explains Darzi's need to leave quickly. Some uncomfortable questions would be asked if she was found wandering around the city with a bunch of adventurers in her guard uniform. Profectus doesn't seem to care either way, and says as much. {I'm happy with anything, to be frank.}

>>
>>34187720
With Darzi's help, you might be able to do it while meditating. I'd probably give maluses to the meditation itself due to the gaping wound in your face. -4 at most. There's also the issue of carving out the scar tissue in order to heal it. If you failed the meditation you'd be left with a scar, and if you succeeded it would be gone for good.

You frown. {Fine, I'm on my way back then. I'll do my best not to get caught on the way.} You slide the helmet back onto your head, wincing as pain shoots up and down your spine. It doesn't hurt as much as it did the first time, but you doubt it will ever be pleasant. Fortunately the pain is soon replaced by a soothing ache, and then nothing at all. Strength floods into your limbs and your vision sharpens, everything seems just that bit easier than it was before. You get the feeling that the helmet is the primary component of this armor.

“One more thing, Master. Could you take a look at one of my companions and gauge their magical potential?” He glances from Mortia to Skull Kid, and then nods. “Sure, I can tell you the human woman has artificially limited her own potential. I'll need to do a little more in depth analysis of the metal man.” You nod, and turn your attention to Skull Kid. “Lift up your helmet.” Skull Kid looks from you to your master. “I don't know, is this going to hurt?” Your master scowls. “Don't be a damned baby, it won't hurt any more than a bee sting.” Skull Kid nods and lifts up his helmet, to your Master's credit he only flinches slightly at the sight of the wire-filled holes where his eyes ought to be.

Master Karim reaches up and taps Skull Kid once on each temple, and once in the center of his forehead. Skull Kid winces on the last one, but otherwise seems fine. Your master shakes his head. “This one will never advance very far in the magical arts. Perhaps he may someday learn to use basic magic, create a spark, heal a scrape, dry cloth, limited control of plants, or basic manipulation of stone and metal... but even those feats will tax him greatly.” Skull Kid frowns, and flips his helmet down once more. You simply nod.

You reach for your cloak, but realize with some amount of consternation that you don't have it with you. “Master, could I borrow your apprentice? I wish to offer you something for all the help you've given me over the years but I don't have my cloak with me, it has all my things.” Your master waves a hand dismissively. “Sure, Rasim has time to cook my meals.” You nod, and a thought occurs to you. “And could I have a chicken? Live, preferably.” Karim scrunches up his face in confusion. “Gods above, why?” You smile. “I have a friend who has acquired a taste for chicken, the fresher the better.” Your master grumbles something about associating with freaks and then waves Rasim off. “Fetch a chicken, and then follow Mikhael to the North Gate to get whatever gift he has. Quickly, boy.”

Rasim bolts off, you'd half expect he'd spent most of the day trying not to run away from your old Master. What is wrong with this kid? He returns a few moments later with a live chicken hanging upside down, its feet held tightly in his hands. The chicken looks around with an odd sort of calm to it, clucking at seemingly random intervals. Strange animal, that is. Everything gathered you open the door and say your good byes. “I hope to see you soon, Master. Try not to go insane before I get back.” Your master waves you off. “Please, if anyone should be warned about going insane it ought to be you. Out with you.”

The door shuts behind you, and your party of four sets off towards the North Gate. There isn't much conversation to be had. Mortia has proven a particularly unfriendly woman so far and you get the feeling that Skull Kid is upset about what your master told you in relation to his magic talent. Rasim is far too timid to speak unless spoken to.

Now that you know manipulate, you couldn't reliably try to cure poison with healing magic. You'd end up just using Manipulate+Poison to cure yourself. You might be able to poison yourself and then only try and heal the damage the poison causes, which would offer a bonus of... +8, or so.

Soma, is the creature sight power of the dragon staff a unique enchantment or something included in nature magic? What I'm asking is, could we [sense life] with low level nature magic?
>>

It's more of a mid-level technique, but it isn't unique to the staff. Nothing is unique to the staff that you know of.

You slap Skull Kid lightly on the back. “Come now, no reason to be so down. Some magic is better than none, and with your technical knowledge I'm sure you'll find other ways to occupy yourself in this reality.” He nods wearily. “I know, it's just a disappointment, man. I was looking forward to being able to pull some of the bullshit moves you do. Now I'll just have to content myself with revolutionizing the world and going down in history as the greatest inventor to ever live.” You smirk, replying sarcastically. “Quite difficult to swallow, I'm sure.” At least he's not too down on himself.

You turn your attention to Rasim, who's taken to hovering slightly behind you. Apparently he's too afraid to approach either Skull Kid or Mortia. You put a hand on his shoulder and guide him forward, so you can actually see him. He simply whimpers, like a kicked puppy. “Were you beaten, boy?” He looks up to you like you just struck him and quickly shakes his head, indicating he wasn't. “Then why are you so timid? What cause have you to shake like a leaf?” The boy opens and closes his mouth several times before finding his voice. “W-when I was... when I was inside the test chamber I saw... some sort of...” He scrunches up his face. “-They were like skeletons, but not really. They still had skin, sort of. In some places. Their skulls were smashed in and they dripped this... this golden stuff. It burned everything it touched.”

(1/?)
>>
You stare at him for a moment, and then grin. “Listen, I see those three regularly. Why, they saved my life just... last week, I suppose. Prevented me from handing over a powerful artifact to an ancient slumbering dragon. They're not nice, but they aren't mean either. What did they say?” The boy looks at you wide eyed. “Y-you can hear them too? They told me about the future! They said I was going to be great entertainment, and kept laughing all creepy like...” He frowns, seems he at least found his voice finally. “They said the same about me, and I turned out alright. You need to stop worrying about it though. It won't get you anywhere, and Master Karim hates cowards. He's like to make sure you spend your every waking moment trying to avoid his pointless pranks if you're not careful.”

Rasim's frown seems to intensify. “Well how am I supposed to help that? He's going to prank me no matter what, so I've gotta be paranoid...” You shake your head. “No, you don't. You can take your licks and try to dish them out as well. Master used to think it was the funniest thing when I used what I'd learned to try and get him to slip down the stairs or paralyze him or dump water on him while he slept. It never worked, of course, but he found it funny regardless. If you take your licks he'll be satisfied, and go easy on you afterwards. If you keep thwarting his attempts he'll just try harder.”

Rasim nods, and not long afterwards you spot the North Gate up ahead. You spot your companions as soon as you're through the gate. Darzi is pacing back and forth behind the bench, while Chrys is talking to thin air, as far as you can tell. Profectus is sprawled out across half of the bench asleep, and Fulvia is standing politely next to Chrys. None of that matters though, because behind them is a sight that leaves you speechless.

(2/?)
>>
A massive carriage, lashed to a team of four camels. It's wooden, with a strange banner streaking down one side. The decoration is garish and macabre, but hopefully it ought to dissuade others from bothering you. It ought to be able to fit all seven of you, though it may be a tight fit. Darzi is the first to spot you, and she waves you over. “Finally! Do you know how long we've been waiting?” She glances from you to Rasim, and then shakes her head. “Who's the little kid and why is he following you?”

You ignore her, instead making your way towards Chrys. You pick up the tail end of some sort of conversation. “-screeching, just send images like you were. It was far easier to interpret than this high pitched wail. What is that supposed to mean? No, you certainly cannot-” She jumps, slightly, when she notices you. “Ah, Mikhael. You've returned.” A bit of color enters her cheeks, seems she was rather intensely focused on her conversation with Ricky. She whips off the cloak and offers it to you in a single motion. “Your pet monster has been most unruly ever since I put that accursed garment on. He keeps asking for food, and asking me to buy things. I don't know how you put up with it.”
(3/4)
>>
You take the cloak, putting it on carefully. Ricky doesn't screech, doesn't project any pictures into your mind. You do seem to be aware of everything they'd bought while they were out, but that's the only greeting you get. “He's quite for me.” You tell her, while relieving Rasim of the live chicken. You pull your cloak wide to put it in but an ethereal tentacles darts out and wraps around the bird. It lets out a panicked cluck before being jerked out of your hands, into the cloak. Rasim looks absolutely horrified.

You pull out the pipe and the bag of pipeweed and hand it to Rasim, along with a gold coin for him. “The coin is for you, take the rest back to Master.” He backs away slowly, still looking at you like you just grew a second head. After a few steps he turns and bolts.

>The stooges were in the magic test gate
http://ask.fm/quidam_asinus
>>How is magical talent discovered?
>>The test itself was fairly simple. You walked through a blackened doorway. Once inside there didn't seem to be anyway out. You panicked for a moment, but eventually calmed and sat down and waited to see what would happen. You were only nine years old, at the time. Eventually a voice from nowhere said simply "Ha! This one will do." and you woke up on the floor of the room you'd left. The doorway nowhere to be seen.
The fuckers knew about us when we were a kid and pretended not to when we met at the Academy.
Does make me wonder though, does this mean we were already a bit insane as a kid? And just how fucked up will Rasim turn out?
>>
>>34189589
He is already a slightly bit insane, since he could see them clearly, and it took us around 4-5, for chrysa to hear them she was 1-2.
Also it seems he might become a powerful Magi.
>>
>>34189631
I wonder Why Chrys can talk to Ricky that clearly, maybe it's something to the with her magical nature. But really, we should check in on Ricky and think with him for a while.
Maybe we're too insane for Ricky to talk to us? That would make me sad.
>>

>>
You wave after Rasim as he runs for the gate, calling out to him. “I'll be seeing you, little apprentice! Remember to just relax, and go with the flow! The skeletal figures just like to watch, usually!” Huh, that could probably be misconstrued if taken out of context. Ah well, it's not your problem. You turn sharply on your heels and clap your hands together. “Right! Lets set off then, everybody load into the carriage!” Darzi simply grumbles “Finally.” before jerking over the black wooden door and climbing into the compartment of the carriage. Fulvia follows shortly afterwards, while Chrys simply removes that strange mechanically enhanced bow from a sheathe on her hip designed especially to hold the weapon. She hops up into the driver's seat, apparently she'll be riding up front.

You reach into your cloak and withdraw a warhammer. It's got a long metal haft, which appears twisted together from several different bars of steel and intricately carved. It's about as long as your arm, capped with a spike at the base and the hammer head at the top. The hammer itself is smaller than one would of expect, but made of heavy steel. A long spike extends down one side, designed to punch holes in plate armor, and the flat of the hammer proper looks more like a spiked meat tenderizer than a workman's hammer. You tap Skull Kid lightly on the head with the weapon, eliciting a loud metal 'ding' and then hand it to him. He'd probably glare at you, if he had eyes.

(1/2)
>>
Finally you kick Profectus off of the bench. He hits the ground and startles awake, leaping to his feet and shouting something incoherent. When he sees you're not under attack, he shoots you a withering glare. “Fucking... don't need to be a dick about, Mikhael. I wasn't even asleep! Just... resting my eyes...” He yawns, rather reducing the legitimacy of his claim. “Whatever you say, my friend! Now get in the carriage, we're leaving.” He grumbles, but does as you say. He climbs into the carriage compartment, along with Skull Kid and a very amused Mortia. That leaves you to drive. Great.

You climb into the driver's seat adjacent Chrys and take up the reins and the driving whip. You're not terrible experienced when it comes to driving a carriage, but you've done it before. You crack the lip loudly above the camels and they jerk into motion. You carefully guide them onto the road, cracking the whip in the air a few more times to get them up to speed. Before you know it, you're rumbling along the ancient cobblestone road along the coast. You figure if you just follow the coast you ought to eventually be able to pull off and cross the scrub lands to reach the temple.

(2/3)
>>
As you settle into the monotony of driving, you turn to Chrys. “So, what did you and Ricky talk about?” She turns her attention away from the desert surrounding you. She's got an arrow nocked, and presumably is on the lookout for bandits. “He kept asking me to buy him things. Animals, mostly. He asked for a dog, and a cat, and a chicken. Even asked for a tiny horse that some merchant was parading around as a 'pygmy' horse, whatever that means. He also asked me for furniture, for some reason. He wanted a rug, and various other decorations. It was very strange, if for no other reason than he projected images of what he wished for directly into my mind.”

While you still have her attention you decide to get to know Chrys a little better, she's the first of your companions and you feel like you hardly know a thing about her. “You know, it occurs to me I never really asked about your past. You were found in a pod, like the pod we found Profectus in, right?” She nods her head, shifting to face forward instead of look out over the sprawling desert around you. Unlike the desert further south and east of El-Amin, the coastal area you're in is fairly lush by the standards of a desert. If you recall correctly, most of the farms that support El-Amin are in this region.

“That is correct. Strange beast were escaping from the ruin and terrorizing our herds and homes. My father and a small team of men were dispatched to eradicate any signs of the beast they could find in the ruins, and ensure that nothing else would escape. Eventually he found me in a large storage area, I still remember it vividly. It was dark, save for a bright red blinking light. Most of the bods had been opened, and a handful had gone dark. Mine was the only one still functional. The corpse of a creature, hunched over with metal protruding from its joints and along its spine, was directly adjacent the pod. Several men were pointing spears at me, but my Father told them to lower the weapons. At the time, I was but a small girl. I do not know exactly how old, but around six. By that estimate I'm now around twenty-three.”

(1/? Posting the conversation with Chrys now, still writing up the meditation portion of this update.)
>>
You crack the whip, the camels jolting back into motion. They'd been slowing down gradually for a good long while. “And after that? I presume your father adopted you.” She nods her head. “That is correct. He escorted me through the rest of the facility while they continued their mission. At one point, one of those hunched creatures lunged at my father and I grabbed it by the mouth and ripped off its lower jaw. I then proceeded to stab it through the eye with the jagged end of the mandible and crush its skull. My father, impressed by the apparent martial prowess displayed by a child, adopted me when he the expedition had returned to Khemdi, the village where I was living when we first met.”

Huh, interesting. You suppose they probably took anything of value to be found in the ruin, but you can't help but wonder how many of those pods are scattered around the region, and why the Rhynians decided to preserve Chrys, along with so many other experiments. “Do you remember anything about your life before waking up in the pod?” Chrys shakes her head. “My father said that, when they had just pulled me out of the pod, I cried out for my mother and father and mentioned that I did not wish to see them leave me. However, I have no memory of this event, nor of my actual mother and father. I am not even certain what I am, some sort of experiment or perhaps a race now long extinct.” She shrugs her shoulders. “It is not particularly relevant, though. I do not wish to come across as somehow unfortunate or disadvantaged. My father was a kind man who raised me well and provided me with an education. The past is the past and will remain as such, so there is no reason to be upset over what may or may not have happened.”

(2/?)
>>
You suppose that's admirable, in a way. Sometimes you get the feeling that Profectus isn't quite as in control of his emotions, especially when it comes to his past. You take a moment to gauge the time by the position of the sun, it's getting late. The sun is starting to set and soon night will fall. You still have a few hours though, plenty of time to meditate. You hand the reins to Chrys and get as comfortable as you can atop the driver's bench. “I'm going to meditate, I learned a new method from a book I read recently. Do try not to let us run off the road.” She nods, removing the arrow from her bow string and sliding it into her quiver before sitting the bow itself across her lap and taking the reigns. She takes the whip as well, and actually seems to handle the thing better than you can. The carriage seems in good hands.

You decide to start with something easy. You remove one of the Rhynian lanterns from your cloak and hang it from a hook protruding from the carriage. It lights up the moment it's withdrawn from the cloak, shining with a bright, red light. As you withdrawn into your meditative trance the lantern itself seems to become a miniature sun, a roiling ball of vys. Your reserves are already full, so you don't need to refill them. Still, it's incredibly easy to get lost in the shifting, flowing, motes of vys as they move through the lantern.

Eventually you get your wits about you and begin to channel vys. At first, it's hard to figure out precisely what you're supposed to do. That book wasn't exactly detailed. You try to subtly manipulate the heat in a small area around the lamp, but that just ends up creating a small flame. You quickly snuff it out and try again. Because the lamp absorbs and then emits vys to generate light, it's fairly easy to judge just what your attempts are doing. The vys itself shifts and contorts. This time when you try to heat up the area in front of the lamp, you succeed. The vys slowly begins to bend and waver, shifting in place as it passes through the heated area.

You feel pride welling up in your chest. You've done it! That's not really all that impressive though. Making an image shiver probably won't trick anyone, maybe only confuse them slightly. You try cooling the bottom half of the area while further heating the top, just to see what happens. This time as vys passes through the area it's bent sharply downwards. You're not... entirely sure how to interpret that. You've little idea what effect that might have on the appearance of the lamp. At the very least, you feel like you learned something. Finer control of the manipulation of heat, at the very least.
>Congratulations! You're now 1/4th of the way towards being a Master of the Fire element!
>Congratulations! You learned to make basic illusions!
(1/2)
>>
When you open your eyes, what you see confuses you greatly. You can see the lamp, but not... properly. It looks like there are several different lamps all layered on top of one another, some rightside up and others upside down. When you cut off the flow of vys, they quickly snap together into one solidified image. You could probably actually use that, if for nothing other than a distraction. You decide to leave the lantern where it is, simply because it will be dark soon.

That really didn't take very long. It's still slightly light outside. You could probably read a book, if you wished. You'll need to decide soon whether to make camp for the night or press on until you reach the Water Temple. You don't really need to sleep, in fact something about this armor gives you the impression you'll never feel tired so long as you wear it. You've just felt constantly upbeat and energetic ever since you put it on. Chrys is idly reading, although you don't remember her having 'Sculpting with Magic'. Did she use the party's funds to buy herself a book? Did anyone else buy themselves a gift while they were out?

You can do that with water magic in humid environments, but in arid environments it would be far more difficult and in the Pa'vala you'd be unable to do anything at all like that. Create allows you to transmute raw vys into water, fire, poison, metal, and various other materials on the condition that you completely understand the material you're trying to recreate. You could create a flame in a perfect vacuum, water in an area with absolutely no humidity, plantlife in a wasteland.

You scratch the back of your neck, thinking for a moment. Technically, everyone does get a cut of the loot. It's also not like they dipped into your actual funds, rather they just used the money you gained from selling all that stuff you found. Besides, you're rich! What does it matter if everyone treats themselves to a little something every now and again? So long as they're not stealing funds to keep up a gambling addiction or wasting money on frivolous nonsense it's fine. You reach into your cloak and withdraw the Utility Effects book. Unlike the Five Effects, this tome seems a tad slimmer. Hopefully it won't take nearly so long to read.

You flip open the book to the index, looking over the effects that it contains. Animate looks interesting, as does Sleep, but you decide you'll start with Create. That might come in handy should you need to enter the desert proper, plus you might be able to abuse it to make yourself a bit more money. Each section seems to be composed of three chapters roughly corresponding to introduction, uses, and meditation. You make idle conversation with Chrys while you flip the pages. “How're you liking the book?” She glances over to you, and then shrugs her shoulders. “It is interesting, it offers several insights into meditation techniques I had not thought of. It also allows for the possibility of artistic expression, an opportunity I would be grateful for.”

Huh, you never really took Chrys for the artistic type. Good for her, you suppose. She seems rather absorbed in her reading so you opt not to bother her further, instead focusing on your own novel. The introduction starts off by explaining a little bit about the mechanics of the Create effect. Apparently many people describe it as creating something from thin air, or from nothing. However, the author is quick to point out that something cannot come from nothing. It is a basic law of reality, inviolate even by magic. With Create what one is really doing is giving their vys physical form. Turning it into water, wine, bread, stone, steel, or any number of materials. She notes that it's not a very effective method, and that if at all possible alternatives should be sought, but in an emergency Create is extremely useful.

She tosses out some formulae but your eyes sort of just glaze over when you start looking through them. It's all a bit too complex for you. Frankly, you never liked such a stringent interpretation of magic. It's magic! Trying to create some sort of structure for it to work within will just invariably end up useless when someone does something that the structure deems impossible. Still, you manage to glean that the cost of creating an object depends largely upon the volume one wishes to create and one's understanding of the object in question. A blacksmith might make a several kilogram lump of iron for only ten vys or so, but a commoner trying to create a gold bar would likely cost something like two vys per gram. Making things like complex machinery is even more expensive.

(2/?)
>>
Finally you move on to the chapter about the uses of the create spell. It's a fairly short chapter, mostly going over what you already know. The name 'Create' is fairly self-explanatory. It is remarked that using 'Create' with the 'Vys' or 'Time' metamagics has had disastrous results in the past. Create Vys trapped the caster in a sort of feedback loot which eventually caused them to 'expire'. Details aren't given. Create Time simply had the caster fall unconscious, and it took several days for them to recover. You'll have to make a note to avoid casting those spells.

The chapter on meditation is more useful. Apparently to meditate on Create, one must first truly examine, understand, and learn to control their vys pool. It's a long process, and weaving complex solids like iron or steel from such an ephemeral, incorporeal substance can be extremely difficult. Rather, the author recommends starting with something like water. Supposedly liquids are more akin to vys than solids are, and as such are a better starting point. One must create an arbitrary point. Vys flows in, and comes out as cool, crisp water. The use of meditative focuses like pipe weed and hashish is recommended, oddly enough. Perhaps the author was simply a fan?

You slip the book closed. It's properly nightfall, at this point. Probably approaching midnight, you'll need to think about turning North soon, probably. You've been following the coast, so you've been slowly turning in a generally easterly direction. Then again, it might be best to simply look for a stele next to the road with directions...

You stand up, stretching luxuriously. It was a relatively cool day, for Pidjata that is, and it's actually a little brisk now that night has fallen. “I'm going to swing into the carriage to see what the others are doing.” Chrys nods, turning a page of her book. “Very well, I will stop the carriage should I see anything of note. Oh, speaking of. I fired a warning shot at an outrider roughly... ten, or perhaps twenty miles back. They quickly fled and I doubt they were anything to worry about, but I felt I should warn you. It had slipped my mind while I was reading.”

Well... that's mildly concerning, but Chrys doesn't seem worried. Presumably it's not a big deal. She seems the more experienced traveler between the two of you so you'll trust her judgment, for now. You grab hold of a iron handle attached to the side of the carriage and swing yourself gracefully off of the driver's bench. You let go, landing neatly with one foot on a small step just below the door. You have to grab the door handle to steady yourself, but you manage to avoid falling off. After it's all said and done you pause to think. You doubt you could've pulled that off before, you were always sort of clumsy to be frank. How did you just easily manage a task you would've thought impossible?

You'll concern yourself with it some other time. You lean back, twisting the handle so the door swing open. It takes some doing but you manage to slip inside and close the door behind you. The compartment inside is surprisingly spacious. There is a small table in the center, with padded benches arranged around it. Two beds are sort of lofted above, one on either side, and the padded benches themselves would make acceptable sleeping spaces. Currently, Mortia occupies one of the lofted beds. She's snoring... rather loudly. It's completely unladylike. Meanwhile, Fulvia, Profectus, Darzi, and Skull Kid are sitting around the table with cards in their hands, various personal items sitting on the table. Profectus seems to be betting money, as does Fulvia. Darzi has bet a ring and a gold chain that's part of her uniform. Skull Kid has bet his shirt, oddly enough. He's got some nasty scars covering his back, and a lot more metal attached to him than you'd originally thought. It looks as if his entire abdomen has been torn out and replaced, giving him a skeletal appearance. No wonder he's called Skull Kid.

If we removed Skull Kid's metal parts and healed him, would his magic ability increase?
>>
Profectus looks up from his cards and waves. “Evening, Mik! How's driving been?” You shrug. “Dull. I read for a bit, and meditated. What have you five been up to?” Profectus shrugs. “Cards, pebbles, various other games. Killing time. Are we almost there?” You shake your head. “We might be able to make it by morning, if we pushed on through the night, but that's what I wanted to ask about. Do you want to keep going or set camp?” Darzi slaps down a series of cards with unexpected fervor, and Profectus sighs, throwing his cards down. Fulvia's projection flickers rapidly for a moment before she to throws her cards down. Skull Kid slaps down his own hand and says simply. “Bam. Read 'em and weep.” Darzi curses, a rather vehement curse too. You've never quite heard someone's mother so thoroughly verbally debased. She passes over the pot to him though. Seems he gets to keep his shirt.

The excitement over, Darzi sighs. “I say we keep going. We can sleep in the carriage if we like. It's roomy enough for all of us, probably.” Profectus nods. “I'm with here, lets push on. Sooner we're there the better.” Fulvia seems to agree, and Skull Kid simply shrugs. “Do whatever, you all know this country better than I do.” Mortia is of course, asleep. So she doesn't get an opinion.

Would he even be healable? Soma has said self image is a big part of restoring how something was. Skull Kid likes being Skull Kid.

Might be able to get one more post in before we fall of page 10, /tg/ is moving pretty slow.

Skull Kid is probably best suited with his enhanced optics. I wanna spend some time with the crew. It's moments like these we'll be remembering when we're fighting for our live against yet more eldritch abominations in a decrepit mine-shaft.

You can force yourself to withstand sleep deprivation longer, but Water magic is what allows you to alleviate weariness.

Anyway, writin'. Maybe probably last post in this thread but I'll do another tonight.

Plus, we told her it would be one of the first things we would try.

Well apparently the flesh is weak and I've been fighting sleep to hard

Suggesting now that if at any point we decide to stop we use the bot to fly high enough that it'd be really hard to spot and use it to spot if any bandit hordes are predators are heading are way. Shit maybe animal herds, can never have enough food. Should be more efficient then having Fulvia stand stand watch especially if they're compatible and can link.

One more thing no necromancy pls

Adios

No. Did something happen? My memory seems to have fogged itself up on purpose akin to what happens when I try to remember my foster childhood.

You nod, and push the door open. “Alright, I'm headed back up then. Don't cause any trouble.” Prof waves a hand in the air, it's a vague gesture you're not really sure how to interpret. “We'll do our best, Mik. No promises.” You sigh melodramatically before slipping out of the door. It's a little precarious, but you manage to avoid falling. Even if you did it's not like the carriage is thundering down the road at a breakneck pace. You carefully close the door behind you and try to plot a way back up to the driver's bench. You start by bracing your foot against the wheel housing, then haul yourself up using a metal chain that stretches from a beam to a post. Then you finally haul yourself into the driver's seat.

Chrys is still sitting there idly reading. She's pulled herself into a ball, likely to keep warm. The reins are held in place be her knees. You take a moment to relieve her of the reins and then sit down next to her, peering into the darkness ahead. The lantern next to you does more harm than good, the light means your eyes won't adjust to the darkness. Still, it allows you light to read by so you leave it up. “We'll keep going through the night, and turn off at the first road headed north.” Chrys nods. “That sounds wise, the road has been starting to slant south.” You pick out Uttareca, the Northern Star, with only a little difficulty and it turns out you are indeed heading southeast. Good thing you're turning North soon.

You travel in more or less silence for several hours. You'd read, but the road requires your attention. Eventually you find a scraggly little dirt road twisting its way north and you turn the cart sharply, nearly tipping it over in the process. Chrys's legs shoot out to brace herself against the side of the cart, but you hear something thud loudly inside the carriage followed by a string of curses. You probably just tipped Mortia out of her bed. Ah well.

After only a few minutes of rumbling along the dirt road you spot a village ahead. There is one massive central dome surrounded by smaller domes, all of them decorated at least slightly. Obelisk rise from all over the village, creating some limited skyline. The entire village has a fairly high wall around it and a number of defensive towers, and a large canyon splits the earth. There's likely a river at the bottom they use to get fresh water from. The area is relatively fertile, there's even grass, but you don't see many fields. This is likely primarily a military base that a settlement has grown around over the years.
