Maeda is in shock, or has been oddly silent this whole time. Aiko leans her head into my chest. I have a few words that come to mind.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY MOM?!"

I am Itsukuma Masami, and I'm currently standing outside of the meeting room where my supposidly kidnapped mother is staying with my two friends. When I opened the door, I found something far stranger on the inside than a mere kidnapping.
She did tell me that she had a 'meeting' today, but I can't imagine that is her definition of a meeting.

"Priestess", The beast who escorted me here breaks the silence, "She's perfectly fine, she's been doing this every week for years."

"That doesn't make it okay! What is she doing? Is she hurt? Why was I told that she was kidnapped earlier if this her routine?!"
"You should ask her those questions. You, as well as I, aren't even allowed to set foot in that room."
He pauses, "I made special exception for you; I would do the same for any of my family. So please, she'll be presentable in five minutes; so why don't we do something in the meantime?"

>"I'm not going anywhere or talking to anyone until Mom gets done with whatever she's doing."
>"Fine, we'll go talk to whoever this is, but only if we're back here the moment she's done."
>"Stop calling me your 'family'!"
>"I-I don't know, I still don't trust you at all. Maeda, what do you think?"

"I'm not going anywhere or talking to anyone without Mom. And stop calling me your family."

The monster looks as disappointed as it's barely recognizable face can allow. I am thankful that he's not attacking us, or threatening us at the moment. That alone puts him leagues above the rest of my 'family' in my book.
Aiko shifts some in my arms, she seems to be finally waking up from her beauty sleep. The golden aura of this card has stopped shining onto her and has returned to its lantern-like glow.

I turn around and notice Maeda is worriedly playing with her phone, tapping the glass screen and occasionally placing it near her ear.

"What's wrong?" I ask, shifting Aiko's weight onto my better arm.
"It's Ryouta, he's not answering his phone. I know that fight shouldn't have taken him that long."

I don't want to say anything, but I completely forgot about him.

"Maeda! Run back downstairs and see if you can find him."
"I'm not leaving you alone, Masami."

"She's not alone." a tired, groggy voice responds.
Aiko climbs from my arms, with a short hop, she's back on her feet.
"Aiko! You're still hurt, you shouldn-"
"No, for some reason, I'm not."

She stretches out her injured arm, but the bruise that once decorated her elbow is completely gone. She stands on one leg, twisting and turning her sprained ankle with ease.

"In fact, I feel good. I feel... better than ever, even!"
She confidently laughs, Maeda and I can only stare.

She spins on her heel several times and does a pose with her formerly injured arm in the air.
"Go on! I can handle this!"

>"She's right Maeda, go look for Ryouta. We're fine here."
>"Aiko, don't leave Maeda alone. I think I'm safe here for the moment."

"Aiko."
"Hm?"
"You should go with Maeda, too. If something has happened to Ryouta, then she needs all the help she can get."

"But-!"
"No, we can't-"
"Please! I didn't want anyone to get hurt by this! They don't want to hurt me, and I have my cards for protection. Just please go find Ryouta!"

They look worried, but they understand what I'm saying perfectly. Maeda grabs Aiko's hand and they take off in a sprint down the hallway.
This is probably for the best.

The next few minutes are spent in awkward silence between the monster and I. This is a good time to ask questions, but I don't really feel there's anything to ask him at the moment.
Well, except this one thing that's on my mind.

"Why are you so different from the others?"
"Hmm?"
"You heard me, the other monsters immediately tried to fight when they saw me. You haven't even tried threatening me yet."
He thinks on that question for a few seconds.
"They're.. it's difficult for me to answer that, Priestess. I, myself, don't know the true answer as to why everyone else is a raving, battle-hungry lunatic besides me. Even right now, most of them are still on the floors below us fighting over the rights to show you to the top floor. If I went downstairs and told them that you were already up here, they would likely keep fighting for the sport of it."

"..And you're seriously saying those people are my family?"
"It's hard for me to imagine sometimes too, Priestess."
He looks over toward me.
"Maybe that's why I consider you to be part of my family more than anyone else."

"So why do you keep saying I'm your family?"
He looks toward the ground, "That's just what I was told, and I've chosen to believe it to be true."
"..So what's your name, then?"

He looks at the ceiling for a minute, before laughing to himself.
"I haven't chosen one yet. Most of the others had their names given to them as part of a naming scheme that I don't know the basis of."

There's the sound of talking and movement in the meeting room. The lock clicks several times as the doors open to reveal one of the two scientists who were in the room.

He adjusts his glasses, "You can come in now, but don't speak too loudly, she's still exhausted."

I almost push the scientist out of the way as I barge into the room.

Looking over to where my Mom is sitting, I can tell she's exhausted. She's slumped over onto the table, her face looks to be almost glowing red. Her hair has returned to its normal jet-black color.
Her entire body heaves and coughs, she looks even worse than she did the other day when she passed out.

"MOM!" My voice causing her to flinch slightly. The scientists look like they want to say something, but it's too late. I've already ran over to her and wrapped my arms around her panting form.

"h-honey, please, I'm in a meet-"
I pull her in for an even closer hug, burying her face in my chest. The heat eminating from her feverish scalp is radiating straight through my clothes.

As I pull her close, I can notice that Haruko, the card I'm currently wearing, starts to vibrantly shine again.
Everyone else in the room notices it too, as the scientists walk over to the device they have mounted on the table and slowly rotate it toward me. They start penning and plotting something on a chart as I cradle Mom in my arms.

Several minutes of coddling pass by, no words spoken between anyone in the room. I can feel her fever rapidly receding as her breathing returns to normal. I wish I knew Haruko could do that before now, it seems really useful.
Mom's arms reach up to my shoulders and gently push me away.

"Sweetie, why are you here? Aren't you supposed to be in school?"
"Mom, I tried calling you and you didn't answer, and.. and"
"Yes, Masami, I was in a meeting. I told you about it last night, right?"
"But this was different! I got a letter this morning saying that you were kidnapped. And you said last night that you were going to do something and-"

Her face grows sullen for a minute, and then turns to a scowl.
I grab her and hug her close to me again. I can feel the tears about to overflow.

"Then you need to stop!" my teary, girly voice that hides inside me making itself well-known.

She sighs softly, slowly breaking my hug. "You should really get back to school now. I'll be fine for the rest of the day."

"That's not the only reason I'm here. I want to speak to this other CEO you were talking about. I think he's the one who has been wanting to speak with me so badly."
"Wha? Are you sure?"

"Mom, I'm positive, if he wants to speak with me so badly then I'm going to do it just to get him off my back. Besides, you're going to be there with me, right?"
"Well.. Umm."
She thinks about it for a second, but immediately shakes her head.
"Yes.. I'll be right there with you. I wouldn't leave you in a time like this." She hugs me again, but it's almost as if she's... uncertain? I'm not really sure.

"Oh! Right. I just remembered." I take out my phone, sending a text message to Maeda and Aiko to see how the search for Ryouta is going.

I slowly help Mom out of her chair while I wait for a reply, she seems to need assistance walking. Several seconds later, my phone beeps several times. Picking it back up and reading it,
"Masami, Ryouta is fine. The elevator is out and he was wandering around on the 16th floor. We'll be back up in a few minutes. - Maeda"

That's a big relief for me. I ask the monster that's been so nice to help them get back in. Together, Mom and I make our way down the hallway toward a large, well-furnished door at the end.

"Mom, you're not very good at lying to me." Arms cross, pout.
"Ah. heheh, I'm not lying. Really."
"Then, why do you not want to go in? Is there something behind this door I should know about?"

She pauses for a minute. Then simply laughs to herself.
"There's never anything in here except the CEO and his Business partner!"
"Then are you, afraid of them?"

She freezes, I'm not sure Mom has ever shown fear or regret in her actions before. Though, I've clearly not known her long enough for those emotions to be present.

I take Julie out of my pocket, the cool card feels like it's rippling in my hand. With a flip of my wrist, it washes over my body. Leaving me in the collected uniform that makes me both look and feel professional.
Mom might be scared of these people, but I am not!

I reach my hand out toward Mom.
"I'm going in, you can stay out here if it's too much for you, Mom."
She looks hesitant for a moment. Examining my suit, her shoes, the ceiling. Finally, her hand wearily reaches out and grabs a hold of mine.

"Thank you, Mom." I smile at her. Hopefully that gesture alone is enough to boost her confidence.

I approach the door, KNOCK, KNOCK
"I'm coming in!"

Inside, there's some stirring and murmuring. A masculine voice calls out,
"And who is this? Who is going to be 'coming in'?"
Maybe I wasn't clear enough in my intentions.

"I said, I'M COMING IN!"

My hand grabs the handle, with a twist, the thick wooden door swings open.

The light of the room is almost blinding as we step into it. For whatever reason, this room is lit up way too brightly for it's own good. The white ambiance bathes us as we enter.
There's a man, who looks none too pleased, sitting behind a sleek black desk that contrasts heavily with the room. Around him are a pair of monsters who seem to be made to stand there and look menacing all day. He folds his hands behind his head and leans back.

"Empress, I didn't call you to my office, so-"
He puts on a cold glare that seems to soften when he sees me. His snarl slowly mutates into a devilish grin.

"-so if I had known you were finally bringing her to see me, I would have cancelled the experiment for the day. Priestess! Welcome! Welcome to Fortune! I assume you've been keeping busy in your absence?"

"I didn't come here for you. I came here for Mom, you wrote a letter to me that said you had taken her."

He looks taken aback, maybe even a little hurt.
"I didn't write anything to you."

I compromise with myself, getting in a fight here is probably not a good idea with the other monsters standing around looking bored as they are. So I slam the door in his face, instead. The large, wooden frame making a distinct honk as it hits his nose. I would probably have cut him into confetti if he kept up. The man behind the desk simply sighs.
"I know Priestess, I hate him too. But you came here to talk with me, right? So clearly you must have something else in mind."

Mom speaks up, "Well, actually, um." She's folding at her hands.

"She is, and furthermore, her name is Izumi and she's the most important person in this room to me. So if you want to talk to me, get it right."

I can hear some of the monsters giggling. Like I care what they think.
"Okay, Priestess, So what name have you taken for yourself then?"
"Masami, that's my name. Priestess is the name you gave me."

He sighs, "Okay 'Masami', surely you're not here to tell me your name, so why don't you tell me what's troubling you"

"What's 'troubling' me? You sit here in Fortune HQ and send people to kidnap me every day. THAT IS WHAT IS TROUBLING ME! And I don't even know what you want with me!"

"Pries-Masami, I can assure you that none of this would have happened if you just came and talked to me when you woke up. I won't blame you for it, I mean, you were in a strange place and was abducted by a strange lady." He eyes Mom a bit as he says that, she stares downward at the floor.

>>
>>34219743
Shut up you. Do NOT let him inside your head. He is obviously evil. The only way he could be more evil is if he was named Devil VonEvilSatan
>>
>>34219785
Obviously he's evil, yes, but she DID abduct an experiment he put a lot of time and effort into and irrecoverably warp its mind.

God knows how many years of research, poof. Useless. All because of her.

>The only way he could be more evil is if he was named Devil VonEvilSatan
We don't know his name. He might be named that.
>>
I want to ask him about the Great War the old people fought in at some point.

I ignore that, he's getting on my nerves already,
"My point is, you didn't have any right to do any of that. You never even bothered to come out and find me for yourself. If talking to me was so important, why did you sit here?"

"Because, Masami, My job is to sit here in Fortune and make sure the company functions as it should. I was planning on paying you a visit this week if you decided not to show up, but I do admit some of my, colleagues, decided to jump the gun a bit and try to bring you here instead. Besides-"
He leans forward on his table, cradling his head on his palms.
"I knew you would want to come meet me. And I am a very patient man."
..
He CAN'T be serious!

He smiles, "Now that's out of the way, I should introduce myself, I am Tow-."
He stops for a moment and thinks, another smile creeping across his face.
"Actually, call me Asai. Mitsunori Asai. Now both of us can have a cute name."
More giggling, I'm beginning to really hate his tone.
"So, now that's out of the way-"

"I'm not done yet! Why did you make me? Why were you attack school students until a few months ago?"

He leans back in his chair, "Well, those are very technical questions, but I may be able to answer why. But first, Chairman, please take a look at her outfit."

I hear footsteps, there's a corner of the room where a Monster was standing. On a second look, that monster very closely resembles a human. The hard lighting of the room highlights his features, making his skin appear to be in black and white.

"...They're very impressive." a deep, booming voice emits from the shadowed figure.
He laughs, "Yes, they are. Nothing short of breathtaking, are they not? And if Masami here would cooperate with us, I could show you all the wondrous things she can accomplish with them."

He spins around in his chair, "You want to know why you were created? Then show us a few more of your outfits. I know you already took a couple of my inventions."

and then

If that's good, I'll start writing. I need to wrap this up soon so maybe next thread we can continue the questioning if I can find a stopping point here.

I'll be surprised if he doesn't demand we try on outfits for answers. It's not like we have power here.

"And why should I do that for you?"
"Because if you do that, I may decide to answer some of your questions."
"Sorry, but if you want someone to try out your new clothes, hire a model."
I can feel Mom grip my shoulders tightly. Really, I don't see why she's so threatened by this guy.

He smiles and leans back, "Well, that's okay too. Just coming here and showing yourself is more than I asked for today."
His teeth click, "Do you want to know the special purpose I had for you? It's really sweet and heartwarming."

"..That's a question that I asked, yes." I'm really losing patience with this guy.

"Your answer, well. Your answer is standing right beside you."
I look over to Mom, she only looks back at me. But
Are those tears welling in her eyes?
"I don't know what you're talking about!" I spat back at him
"Masami, don't you know that I understand exactly what goes on in this building at every second of the day? When you barged in on your dear mother's meeting, I know that you saw what an average week for her is like."
I don't get where he's going with this.
But I can hear mom beginning to sniffle beside me.

My connection is cutting in and out. Apologies.

That last post took 20 minutes to finally post, thanks in no small part to fucking captcha bullshit like 'hur it expired' and 'hur it's rong'. Making me having to upload again.

>Second part on the way
>>
>>34221452
Hahaha wow. What a dick. He's actively trying to piss Masami off now.

I still want to ask him why he was attacking our friends before we storm out in a fury, but I'd understand if we didn't get to that.
>>
>>34221552
I.. I'm going to burn down the building. I.. I will. You'll see. You'll all see.

He continues, "What you saw her doing to that card is a complex procedure we refer to as 'drafting', It's a very long and arduous process. Think of it like creating a final draft of a report from a first draft without a printer. It's akin to having to copy a whole book by hand. And only a certain kind of person is able to do it."

Clearing his throat, he continues, "It used to be, a long time ago, we would accomplish the same method by training the newly formed cards on magic-"
He cuts himself off.
"Well that's.. complicated. The point is: Your mother was raised to be the single greatest draftsman in the field of magic studies who had ever lived. She performed suburbly for many, many years, but the process is also very tedious and physically demanding. Up until some years back she was able to draft multiple cards and spells in a single day. But as the years went on, she began showing her age and fraility."
He stands up, stretching and allowing his joints to pop.
"We knew she probably couldn't keep up her pace without physically harming her. So a year or so ago we enacted a plan to allow her to retire while still providing a good Draftsman, as well as something suited to other tasks, for Fortune."

He leans over and looks at me, his eye peeking out of his ridiculous hairdo.

"I'm sure you see where you fall into this plan, right Masami?"
I see where I fit into it, but I don't like it one bit.

He feigns sadness, "And the tragic part is, Masami, if we don't find a replacement for her, she's likely going to keep trying to draft anyway. Think of it as a sort of agreement we have."
Now I'm mad, "Well the agreement is off! I won't allow you to harm her anymore."

"It may be off for you, but does your dear Mother agree?"
I look over to her, immediately noticing that she's bawling into the sleeves of her suit.
"So, I will see you at work tomorrow, right Empress?"
I can hear a teary, mournful reply through the crying and the sniffling.

"..Yes."

Thread End

Well. That happened.

Sorry we didn't quite get to the question of 'Why are you attacking children'? But we'll get to that next thread. You haven't quite told him to sod off just yet so maybe you can get a few more questions in.

Thanks for the thread everyone
>>
>>34221648
thanks for running
hope we'll get enough firepower to take this guy and his fucking tower down
>>
>>34221681
Let's not be hasty. The guy hasn't revealed his evil master plan yet. This is perfectly ordinary overwork.

What we need here is a union to protect the rights of.. magical transcribers?
>>
>>34221681
I hope you do too!

Also, archived. Sorry this thread went on longer than expected with such a sparse update rate. I wasn't expecting my connection to die like that.
>>
>>34221734
It's not even overwork. She seems to get ample time off.

This is hardly a 24/7 slave camp.
>>
>>34221760
if you have a phone that can use internet, you could get and set up PDAnet as a backup, if your connexion dies like that too often
>>
>>34221760
Connection problems happen. Thanks for running. Lots of things to think about in between threads.
>>
>>34221826
Well, you have a point, but all I have is a flip phone.

>>34221852
Thanks

One question I had: How was the exposition this thread? Was it laid on too thick?
>>
>You may continue thinking of Empress as your mother if you wish
This dickbag was planning this the entire time. Fuck.
>>
>>34221887
>How was the exposition this thread? Was it laid on too thick?
It wasn't walls of text and we got to see dickbag and Masami in her hyper cocky outfit trading barbs. It didn't have that lecture tone annoying exposition has.
>>
>>34221887
well, it was an exposition scene, for sure, but it was fitting
and yeah, pretty interesting to see the personality of this new guy

Also for those wondering what was taking me so long in finding a portrait for this guy: I originally had one of the Kiharas as his portrait, but decided that was a little on the nose. Plus he didn't look laid-back enough, they all look absolutely insane.

>>34221942
Thanks!

>>34221975
I hope I conveyed it well enough. I think the picture that I ended up going with fits him a lot better. Even if it, too, is a little on the nose. For those who know who the original character is.
