Part 2:

It is 1134 in the Year of Our Lord.

You are Wilhelm of Koblenz, recently arrived in the Kingdom of Jerusalem. In your short time here you have found a companion in Solomon, warrior of Makuria, and lost a companion in Alain of Acre.

You have been hired by an elderly knight to escort his daughter to Sidon for a wedding, and having just left the port town of Tyre begin the second leg of your adventure.

It is a hot Thursday afternoon that sees you travelling through the pasture lands of the Holy Land. Lady Jehanne and her maid Neomi are enclosed in a palanquin being tirelessly hauled across the countryside by a pack of slaves.

Your squire Hugo and man-at-arms Franz flank the palanquin, while Solomon brings up the rear, walking with his injured horse. You are on point, on horseback with spear and shield. You have a good vantage point to spy the surrounding territory.

A copse of trees up ahead shadows the road and looks like an invitation to trouble, but the ground around the road is rocky and infirm, far from ideal for a hand hauled carriage to cross.

After losing Alain to the lion, you think twice about forging mindlessly ahead and decide to take a detour down the rocky slope and around the trees.

You direct the slaves to begin an awkward descent when Neomi shoots her head out of the curtain.

"What is this?" she asked, "This rocking is making my lady ill. Why are we leaving the road?"

"Those trees would be a good hiding spot for brigands," you explain, "I'd rather not take the risk."

"A day outside of Tyre and on the road to Sidon, you expect brigands? Feh, you should forge ahead instead of wasting time like this! Send a scout ahead if you are so fearful."

You curse a little under your breath but see the sense. You direct the slaves to bring the palanquin back up onto the road and studiously ignore their exasperated looks.

Of all the men who could scout you judge yourself best fit. Your horse is healthy, your lance is strong, and if trouble really does rear its head you can scream for Franz and Solomon to bring their bows to bear.

Before heading on to investigate you draw your band together.

"I'm going ahead," you say, "Because the lady thinks time is more precious than security. Wait here. If I'm not back in half an hour, take the detour for I'm likely dead."

With that you trot your horse forward.

strike <bind -12 hp
bind < thrust -7 hp

The wounded brigand tries to trap your spear but you deliver a hard blow to his chest, you follow up with a thrust that opens his cheek, but he steps inside your guard to deliver a thrust to your chest. What could have been a viciously blow bounced off the chain links of your armour. You knock aside his second thrust and beat him upside the head. When he tries to strike you again you trap his sword and send him wheeling away. A last thrust to the neck sends him back gasping, thrusting a hand to the wound.

Again the other brigand takes this time to strike you from your flank.

Your spear you rest across your saddle and you breath a sigh of relief.

"Brother, you are bleeding!" he moves to help you down. Truthfully you were quite bloody, but less of it was yours than might be apparent. Your spear hand up to the wrist was red and your shield was hacked badly at the rim

"Go tell the princess the path is clear, I'd sit a while and enjoy some quiet."

Hugo nods and dashes of, waving his spear overhead. You breath a sigh of relief, and looking down at the dead brigand.

There was nothing of worth on the miserable wretch. In truth he looked more a starved dog than a man, and his sword was more a utensil than a weapon of war, barely worth the steel it was forged from. Poor fool had no boots, and his tunic was patched with canvas. He doubted there was ought but fleas in his coin purse.

Beggars with blades taken to hounding pilgrims, and desperate ones at that to go an armed knight on horseback.

Soon enough Hugo had the palanquin and all his companions up and in the shade of the tree. Solomon raised his spear in a respectful salute while Franz just clucked his tongue and began to unpack bandages from his kit.

When the lady folk peered to look you heard a gasp.

"The road is cleared," you say with a weary grin.

"So much blood sir!" Neomi gasped.

You do have wounds that could use bandaging. Who will help you?

> Outside Hugo, Franz has the highest relationship value with you so he essentially is the 'volunteer')

You dismounted and Hugo helps you remove your armour. It stings a little around the thighs, where a large angry welt was forming. The cut on your brow had already scabbed over, and despite the blood you had no immediate injuries. None the less Franz came over and poked, prodded and generally man handled you until he was satisfied. Taking up a bar of soap and a small bowl of water, he scrubbed the blood off your face and arms with a thorough and brisk practice.

"You've always been shit at fightin' lad," he said, "Take the time to strengthen your sword arm if you're bound on foolish adventure, instead of chasing after maidens."

With the mention of maidens you noticed both women were watching you from the depths of their palanquin. You flexed your chest a little, just for their sake.

I think TKQ places common soldiers at around 50ish range. 40s sound like a more realistic POWER LEVEL for the brigands.

"What do you make of these bandits, Franz? Neomi seemed to think them rare, so close to a city."

He applies a cool ointment to the welt on your hip and considers the question. Meanwhile Hugo was scrubbing the blood out of your armour while Solomon kept watch.

"In Koblenz, do you think," Franz began thoughtfully, "would the Lord Bishop leave the roads immediately outside the city unpatrolled? Would your father or uncles do nothing to keep the peace, or would they take it upon themselves to keep the road clear? I dislike it, even hearing as I have that this is a wild place. I dislike that there are brigands so close to a city. There's strife here sir, between lords. It is the only kind of strife that breeds desperate men such as these. I cannot say who is guilty, but duties are being ignored."

He finishes applying his ointments and tinctures, slapping you fully on the back.

"Now try not to hurt yourself in a way my meagre talents can't fix, and keep your eye on the road and off that damn palanquin!"

He saunters off while Hugo helps you back into your mail.

You decide despite your weary limbs that the best thing is to forge ahead and cover as much ground as possible. The slaves grumble a little but a hard stare silences their tongues and soon enough you are back out under the hot sun, a drink of water in hand and eyes cast to the horizon.

As the sun begins setting you decide to make camp, with no clear place of shelter you camp by the side of the road.

Your men remain on guard. Neomi slips out to fetch a bowl and water to clean her mistress with. It's down to Hugo to make dinner and he badly fries a mess of eggs which go down uneasily.

As you rest your head back to sleep you hear a noise in the distance, the crackle of thunder. You really aren't in the mood to be rained on.

You decide to tough it out, using the saddle as a pillow and pulling a blanket over your head. The rain sweeps in fast, shockingly cold. The fire is doused quickly and the world is made dark, illuminated only partly by quick flashes of lightning. You see the suddenly lit forms of Hugo and Franz, Solomon. You see movement in the rain, but cannot make it out. The horses give startled cries with very thunderous roar from the sky.

The palanquin opens.

"Hey you men, pack in here," it was Neomi's voice, struggling over the rain, "Quickly now, before you catch your death!"

You go to the palanquin but there is not room enough for all of you.

You send Solomon and Hugo into the palanquin while remaining in the rain with Franz. Taking up the blankets, the both of you sit back to back, wrapped up as best you can while keeping a watch out. There's no trouble to speak of save the rain itself, and before long you are sneezing into the blankets.

Eventually the storm abates and the two of you are left looking out at a slowly building sunrise, much worse for wear.

And it is only then that you realize the slaves were gone, run off in the night. It was perhaps your remaining on watch in the rain that kept them from stealing the horses as well.

When the others emerge from the palanquin they are surprised by the news.

"Well then I will just have to ride the horse," Jehanne said, putting a hand on the saddle.

You give her a slight glare. Her imperious attitude was starting to wear thin.

"Aye you can ride, with me, and risk your neck if more brigands appear. Or would you demand Solomon put you up on his poor nag?"

Jehanne struck up her chin and glared back through slit eyes. "Oh I'll ride with you sir, and risk the danger. It seems there's no avoiding it in your company."

You mount and offer her your hand. "Then enough talking and mount up, or would you waste the day moaning at me?"

She brushed aside your hand and pulled herself into the saddle, once again riding side saddle across your lap and kept a-horse by your arms either side of her.

Neomi and Hugo worked together to shift through the goods carried on the top of the palanquin, portioning out the burden as best they could.

As they began back on their journey, Jehanne looked up at you.

"That fight with the bandits, was that the first time you ever killed?"

"I've killed before, in battle," you say as your horse picks up onto the high road. Your companions form a staggered band behind you. "Early last year, and earlier. A bandit was plaguing the Rhineland, a Jew marauder by the name of Daniel. He had a force of twenty something misbegotten sons of bitches. My master was in his cups, it came to me to rally the townsfolk, and lead a strike back against him. We took him in chains and saw him hanged, but a number of his men fell on my sword."

"And before then?" she asked.

"There was a siege when I was around Hugo's age. My knight was an errant, always traveling from this court to that court. We got caught up in things and I...I helped turn a pitcher of boiling oil on the heads of some men. It was not pleasant."

"I've seen people die," Jehanne said, "My mother and...the babe she was trying to deliver. My father was kept from the chamber, even to the last, and his howls when he heard of her passing."

"Have you heard of Lady Hildegard of Bingen?" you ask.

Jehanne shakes her head.

"A fine woman of the Church, the Lady of the Rhine. I had the pleasure to hear her speak once. Never have I met a more intelligent person, and she command as much respect as any bishop. The Church is a place for women as well as men. If you do not want to risk the birthing bed, take a religious vow and serve Jesus Christ."

The countryside rolls by and you wonder where the slaves might have escaped too.

"She must be remarkable, but I'm no Lady of the Rhine," she squirms against, "And there are things the church asks that I am not willing to give up. Sacrifices that I'm not interested in making."

Hugo had fallen into keen conversation with Neomi, while Franz and Solomon chatted amiably.

"Certainly you can still live a life worthy of the Church, and God shall shelter you from some of the harshness of life," you add.

"Again, priestly words from a man with a devil's glint in his eye. Why were you so insistent to ride with me, if you are so godly?"

It's clear from the minor drowning you got last night that sheltering with farmers would be preferable. You give the word to your comrades and make your way over to the collection of huts.

You are met with watching children and clucking chickens, which scattered from your horse. Most of the adults must be still working the field. Soon though a few grey beards appeared. They were locals, and one carried the cross before him like a ward.

"We pay tax, no trouble," he says in broken latin, "We pay tax to both Lord Gerard and Lord Conrad, on time. You talk to them, they know."

You frown, having no knowledge of either of this men, except that Lord Gerard was Lord of Sidon.

"We've come to seek shelter for the night, we're on the way to Sidon for a wedding, and have had some trouble on the way. A night under your roof, and food besides would be welcome."

The old greybeard lowered his cross and looked to the other elders. They talked among each other for a while before the old man turned back.

"You help do some work, fetch water, split wood and the like. You sleep in stable, and have some of what's left at dinner."

It wasn't unfair.

You get off your horse and shake your head.

"A bit of bread and some hay is no good. Proper beds, real food," you pat your horse's flank, "We have tender women folk of gentle birth with us. Beds good man, good ones as I'm sure you have."

The old man gaped a little but slowly nodded, "beds," he said.

"And food," you say, patting your stomach, "Meat, with wine to wash it down with. We have struggled much, and ill work hard for it."

The old man nodded. "Meat, if you work hard." He clicked a finger and one of the grey beards scooped up a chicken. "Fresh, good." He smiled, showing his crooked teeth.

You helped Jehanne dismounted, and you noted her flushed cheeks when you grabbed her by the hips before settling her on the ground. Your horses were collected and one of the old men took especial care of Solomon's horse.

The men of your band were taken aside by an elderly woman who doled out various instructions. You seemed exempt, they must have known possibly by instinct that you are a knight and above toiling in the dirt.

The old man pointed to one building.

"You clean before meal," he said.

A bath would do some good, and the girls slipped into another hut to do the same.

When you go in there are two tubs. Franz is soaking in one, Solomon the other.

You slip into the bath that Solomon is occupying. The water is surprisingly warm, and you feel it soak into your stiff muscles. You massage a knot in your shoulder, letting out a slight groan.

"Eh, Wilhelm, you come here," Solmon motions you over. He grabs you by the shoulder and roughly massages the muscles. "Us warriors have to stay limber, you know." he said, working out the knot. He rubbed your head, "for luck," he said.

"How's your horse Sol?" you ask.

A miserable look crossed his face. "Aye, poor thing. Some rest is needed. The man who has the care of livestock here, he knows his trade. Says he can help it get some strength back, but it would take a week or two. I will let him, and hope they do not eat horse in these parts."

"I'm sorry about your horse," you say.

"No apologies, a horse is not worth the life of a man. Only heathens way animals as more valuable, and we are Christian brothers." He then gave you a look. "And as we are brothers, tell me brother, you have had the dark one, now you want the fire haired girl? You are greedy, but I do not blame you, a pretty little thing. I tried to make a pass last night but she had no eyes for me."

Solomon laughed and slapped your back. "You are a good man Wilhelm. And I wish you luck in your coursing the pretty one. After the battle I saw she spied your bloody form. She is wet for you. A man fresh from combat charges the lust of womenfolk in a special way. I say you strike soon while the lust is still hot."

With that advice in your ears you get out of the bath, dry off and dress. When you leave the room you spy Hugo by the wall of the women's baths, peering through a gap in the planks.

You think to go over to Hugo but instead call him over. He does a frightened little jump at the sound of your voice, and crosses over careful, hands clasped in front of his britches.

Aye, you can't rightly blame him for wanting a peep, but it wasn't the right way of things.

"Little brother, is chastity not a virtue?" you ask.

"Are you chaste?" he replied.

"This isn't about me," you reply, hooking him around the shoulder. "It's unbecoming to spy on fair ladies, without their knowledge. We must hold to a higher standard. And it is desperate besides. No woman wants a pervert. When it comes time for you to bed maidens, and that time will come faster than you might think, you will have better luck as a straight backed, virtuous man than as a skulking peeper."

"I understand brother," he says with a bit of a sulk.

"Now run on and bathe, you'll offend our hosts if you aren't clean."

Hugo nodded and sped away.

Soon enough the women appeared, cleaned and carefully groomed. Jehane had her hair carefully plated by Neomi, who wore hers in a loose tail. They wore their nicer dresses, well cut to their bodies. The heat of the water was still in their faces and they had a luminous glow about them.

You extend your arm to Jehane with a slight bow and she accepts it with a slight curtsy, leaning in to your frame.

As Solomon appears you make a suggestive motion and he repeats your gesture to Neomi.

Oh kind sir, but how could I?" she says in a friendly way, "When our gallant squire is waiting to attend?" Hugo pops out from behind Solomon and shuffles over. He takes Neomi's arm carefully and she playfully tussles his hair.

Solomon rolls his eyes but smiles, offering his arm to Franz.

"Good sir you honour me," Franz replied, taking it with such dignity it elicited a giggle from Hugo and the girl and a smile from you.

All together you go to the room set aside for communal eating as if it were a party hosted by the King of France himself.

The rustics goggle at you all a little, so unused they were to bearings of the foreign gentry, but they respond well in time. You eat well and drink deeply of the offered wine. An instrument is played that you had never heard before, a type of stringed instrument similar to a harp but with four strings and with a long neck.

"An oud," the elderman of the community explained. You enjoyed the sound of it.

I wouldn't really say either time were for heroes. I don't know much about Crusaders but Three Kingdoms were a good time for long generals to dynasty warriors it up.

>So the structure and fighting techniques of these armies were based upon small groups of men following individual leaders. The heart of each unit was the commander himself, supported by his Companions, skilled soldiers who owed him personal allegiance and served as a body-guard, and the most important tactic was expressed in the phrase "to break the enemy line". In aggressive action, the commander and his Companions acted as spearhead for a drive at the enemy array, and if they were successful they could hope to be followed by the mass of their followers, spreading out to attack the broken enemy from the flank and the rear.

You offer her a dance, which she at first seems to demure away from until Neomi pushes her from her seat. You take her up in your arms and twirl her easily, trying to keep a pace with the music. It wasn't like the music of home, it was more sprightly and invigorating. Jehanne is soon laughing from pure exhiliration and so are you.

A few of the grey old ladies take up with the grey old men and join in the dance, and Neomi is soon instructing poor Hugo, who is soon cut out by first Franz, then Solomon. But Jehanne never once leaves our arms.

"It's growing late, sir," she said, breathless, "and I'm for bed, would you escort me to my chambers?" She had sweat trailing down the side of her face, but her smile was still fresh.

There is no impolite way to refuse. You escort her to her chamber. It is all dark and rain has begun to fall outside, a low rumble of thunder. Her chamber is a humble little room loaned from the locals, a low but wide pallet meant for a married couple. She closes the door behind you and goes to lay on the pallet, stretching across it. She looked back to you.

"And why do you hover by the doorway sir?" she asked, her face hot even in the dark, "A proper gentleman would leave a lady to her rest."

You slip your hand beneath her shirt and tease her virgin flesh. Her bravado quivers and a hint of fear enters her face, but as you fall upon her and use your mouth to tease her further, you bring forth cries as much of delight as nervous fear.

You slip back her dress, she pulls off your tunic, you make a pile of clothes on the floor until you are as Adam and Eve in the garden. She is a quivering little doe in your arms, but responds eagerly to every caress and kiss, your long fingers working the wetness between her legs.

She grabs you by the neck and hair, feels for your body.

"Please, don't make me beg for it," she says, a suggestion of tears in her eyes. This is not just lust, you realize, there is something else. Not love for you, but a need for release.

You work her slowly. "Please," she says, squirming against you. You work a little faster. "Please," she says again. Your fingers are thick, and you meant to leave it just at fingers, but the heat in her eyes...

"P-plea-" you cut her words off with your mouth, and empty her lungs with your entry.

The thunder drowns out her second, lustier cry as she envelopes you, her legs wrapping around your hips, her fingers laced around your neck. You give her that release through out the night, until release finds you. She lies a quivering wet mess, hair matted and body glistening beside you.

Your chest heaves as you lie back, bloody with her maiden head.

"Thank you," she says, closing up her shaking thighs. She tries to stand but falls laughing. "Oh thank you," she laughs as she falls across your chest. But her laughter is mixed with tears as well.

"What a life I could have had," she said, trailing a scar across your chest, "Like your Hildegard, or even as just a soldier's girl traveling the land. But duty is all. I will marry Matthias this coming Sunday. My father will be cared for in his dotage. And we will have many children. Yes, I think the first boy shall be named Alain, but the second?" she kissed your mouth, "What is the French of Wilhelm? Guillaume. Yes, a good name."

She curls up beside you and is soon asleep.

The next day you come out to fresh food and your horse ready and waiting.

Solomon laughs to see you and Hugo blushes brightly, but Franz is scowling. Neomi takes Jehanne aside and they speak together in French.

Hugo helps you into your armour, you mount and ready for the road, spear and shield in hand.

"Bless you elder," you say, pocketing the no doubt false relic. She smiles and pats your knee, before hiking up a squealing child onto her shoulders.

Many of the pilgrims raise a cheerful cry as the walls of Sidon come into view. Some of the children start to race ahead. Your company makes no especially great effort to reach the safety of those walls, but your chest lightens with every step.

Your military training scours the high walls and round towers. It is an impressive fortress, you'd yet to see a city in this land that wasn't. Acre was still larger by far, but it made your own homeland like look an overgrown town in comparison.

When you reach the entry you are met by armed guards wearing the device of the Lord of Sidon.

"No swords in the city," a large man-at-arms said, collecting the swords from the pilgrims. "Excepting yourself sir," he said to you.

"You'll each get a receipt, show it on your exit to collect your weapons.

"Why me though!?" Solomon roared when one of the guards tried to take his shotel, "I am a knight in my homeland, I have a right to carry a sword."

"We don't recognize your heathen customs, moor," the man-at-arms said, reaching for the blade. Solomon's hand closed on the hilt, a scowl on his face.

This could get bad.

You push your horse between the quarreling men.

"Sir Solomon is my brother at arms and a noble Christian of Nubia. I can vouch for his claim of knighthood. Now unhand him least you be found in violation of his God given rights as a member of a chivalrous institution."

"Beggin' my pardon sir," the man-at-arm replies, backing away with hands raised, "Sirs," he corrected himself, touching forelock to Solomon.

"This is good," Solomon said, straitening his tunic, "This is respect."

You are herded into the city, and its Neomi that guides you all the rest of the way.

Its a small town house, with a group of well dressed people of the city waiting in front of it. A fat little man hovered next to his fat son, their resemblance unmistakable, their blades marking them as knights. With them was a razor thing woman of high cheek bones and a long, drooping nose.

"Ah!" the little man exclaimed, "That is her!"

His fat son turned bulbous eyes over to your party. "Hmm," he said with lips thin pressed. He walked over. He had an awkward body shape, his legs were long and thin but his sides were large and spilling over his waist. Though he could not have been more than twenty he was already balding.

He looked Jehanne up and down. "Hmm," those frog lips formed a smile, "Yes, you will be my wife," Matthias said, rubbing his hairless chin.

"My lord," Jehanne bowed before him.

"And who is this?" he asked looking up at you.

"My guardian for the journey, alas my cousin Alain was killed in its course," Jehanne replied.

"Oh poor dear," Matthias' father said, coming to coo at the girl with his wife.

You dismounted and shook the father's hand.

"I owe you so much for delivering sweet Jehanne to us safely," he said.

"More than you know," you reply, "It came at great risk and much loss. Not counting our man, but also a very nice palanquin and four slaves, a good destrier and some personal injury on my part. Yes sir, I think you owe a bit more than ten pfennings."

"Aah," the man's mouth is agape, but closes as you begin to haggle.

A quick back and forth nets you an extra ten pfennings on top of the main sum, as well as a recently baked apple pie (quite delicious) and an invitation to join the wedding party in a week's time.

You leave off on the invitation for now, you do not know where you will be in a week, but pocket the extra coins greedily.

Being urbanites he cannot suggest a reliable stable, but does now of a large horse auction and trading yard to the north of the city. It was said even the best Arabian horses could be purchased at this market.

>>

This. Chess + Relics is the better deal.

>>34224681
Exactly.
>>
>>34224551
>Lion helm
>Tzykanion stick
>>
>>34224681
Correct.

You have to take time out of your day, find a worthy opponent, and play the game. Your stats will only improve if you are playing someone with high stats than you, and it has depreciating results. You can't get 99 int just by spamming chess nonstop for a month, for instance.
>>
>>34224690
We should get the stick too, INT isn't needed as much as War for what we're doing right now.

It's like Mount and Blade, we're at the very start where we have to keep whacking bandits
>>

Lion Helm + Cloak
You mean. Although I'm not sure many people will appreciate it as much
>>
So final consensus is:

Shatranj set
Relics
Tzykanion stick

Correct?

You'll need to go else where to get your lion pelt turned into a covering for your helmet, you'll also need to go buy a helmet.
>>
>>34224702
Solomon will be doing the whacking, this is where Lead comes into play. And for that purpose we need the chess set.

>>

>>

>>34224741
scrap the stick & we're golden
>>
You buy a shatranj set. It's a game of little hand carved miniatures played on a little checkered board. You'd heard much about it, it was causing quite a stir in the intellectual elites back home.

You also go in for some offered relics of a brother/sister pair of martyrs. You aren't sure if they are real, but the beggar that is selling the little splints of bone seems happy to take your pfennings.

You are left with sixteen pfennings on your person. The sun is starting to set and merchants are packing up their stalls, though food vendors are still out and about. A yawn escapes your throat.

Not one to put off tomorrow what can be done today, you head to the local court.

The citadel that dominates the coast line of the city is intimidating. It made some of the castles back home look like a dwarf. It was said to be built on the skeleton of an old Roman castle, improved first by the Greeks, then the Muslim conquerors, and finally made the monster it is now by the Crusaders who had taken it.

It was built seemingly on the sea itself, connected by a narrow strip of land. An outer wall protected the approach, with guards upon it and at its pass, the teeth of a portcullis just visible.

The thought of trying to take it made Wilhelm's shudder.

"Ho guards!" you call to the men-at-arms, "I am Sir Wilhelm of Koblenz, looking to meet with the lordship or his chancellor!"

One man-at-arms turned to the other and muttered something under his breath in French.

"The Lord is away sir," he called back, but is expected in two days. His chancellor is taking no guests until his return."

"That vulture Conrad cannot see sense, and has petitioned the king to intervene," the man-at-arms said, "If you take offense I beg forgiveness. I had to turn away an envoy of Count Hugh of Jaffa just this morn. There are to be no guests admitted to the castle until Lord Gerard's return."

"That 'vulture' knows his rights," the other guard said, "It is our lord that overreaches."

"Stow that talk!" someone above yelled down.

The dissenting voice shut his mouth bitterly and gave his comrade an irritable look.

Seeing no entry, you resolve to find accomodation for you and your men.

You decide to try your luck a second time, and head to a chapter house of the knights hospitaller for sanctuary.

What you find is a tad...disquieting.

It is a domed temple, possibly once a worshipping place of the moselmen, but that wasn't what gave you trouble. The walls were dirty, and their was garbage heaped out the front. It was not entirely abandoned, a lonely priest swept its surface clean, but there was no order to the place either. No priests or lay members, no armed knights doling out alms.

Just a few old men and women, and only a couple of pilgrims. Not close to the throng you had entered with.

"We have rooms," one greybeard said, coming up to you with hand outstretched, "I'm afraid our humble place sees little visitors these days. Our knights are off in Galilee, mustering for a rad against the heathens, and have been gone for some months. A small donation and you may have rooms, why you'd all but have the run of the place. Anything you can give." His smile was more desperate than good humoured.
