>Recap
Garland is a Witcher, a monster slayer from the school of the Panther. We are following his adventures through the tales of a bard. His first adventure took him to a town suffering at the hands of slavers and a Siren, he killed both. Now he has returned to his home, and under the orders of his master, taken an apprentice on his next task, which is to end a curse in the city of Starkhaven and retrieve the Sorceress who dwells there.

However on their way, they discover a strange little Hamlet, where there all the men and women have been attacked. Some cling to life in some strange comatose state, and it seems Harpies have been harvesting their dreams... what or who is behind this madness?

Garland stepped out into the night air of the little hamlet of Culan, breathing deep and expecting to taste the sweetness of a spring night. But what greeted his senses was not sweet but sour, a foul scent and taste that lingered in the back of the throat. It felt as though he had walked into a dank old crypt, rather than a late spring evening. There was even a thin gray mist gathering on the road on which he now stood, thin tendril-like fingers of it grasped around his ankles wistfully, as if trying to drag him down into it.

Looking back into the warmth of the inn, it was almost possible to deny the feelings that he was encountering her not two feet from that warmly lit place. There was his apprentice, laying asleep upon a straw mat by the hearth, sleeping – yet still slightly tense, as if expecting an assault at any moment.

He could wake him, and they could investigate this strangely living – yet unloving – night for themselves, or he could let the poor lad rest after his first big day. He had handled all manner of problems on his own in the past few years, and didn’t doubt he could handle this one with ease. But it could also be a learning experience for the Witcher-to-be.

the lad can sleep on the horse when we leave this place
>>
It would be dangerous to leave him there, even if the traveller’s rest seemed to be a beacon of warmth and safety as he looked at it from his place in the darkness, there was no telling what could happen if the lad was left alone. He was about to step in to wake his apprentice, when he heard a voice from behind him. Or at least that was his first conceptualization of what the noise must have been. It could have easily been the sound of wind through trees, or even one of the horses they had retrieved breathing heavily in its sleep.

But what he heard felt like the a whisper, even though there were no words to be heard – or at least none he could understand.

The feeling pricked his neck with gooseflesh, and he turned around sharply, his hand reaching for his silver blade out of pure instinct. But when he faced the sound, ready to whip out his blade and end the life of another beast… there was nothing.

Grunting to himself he lowered his guard somewhat, taking a few steps back until he felt the wood of the traveller’s rest’s doorframe underfoot. Unlike most buildings in the hamlet, the rest had a timber flooring, and he backed up until he was well inside, before closing the door. He need not make another sound than this, for Xander woke with a start and a hand reaching out for the swords that lay at his bedside.

The only reason he hadn’t woken seen was because Garland had been quiet.

“What is it Garland?” he questioned, bleary eyed but otherwise ready for anything.

“Don’t know, we’re going to find out though.” He replied simply, before beckoning for Xander to get up.

Meh, fuck those guys. Not like they know what's best. Should just run what you wanna run.

>Investigate the unconscious townsfolk
>>
“Grab a torch from our supplies,” Garland instructed, nodding his head towards the pack’s they had piled in the small inn’s corner only a few hours ago. He had first thought to just light a branch in the hearth and bring that, but one of the long-burning torches from Jyrrgen’s alchemy lab might do them a bit better. Not only were they long lasting, but they could also be used as weapons if the need arose. “Keep your silver drawn, and your guard up.”

These last few words of instruction given, he drew his own silver sword – the blue meteorite tinted blade gleamed in the orange firelight, making it almost seem to glow a faint purple. He waited for his apprentice to be ready, and then headed out into the whispering darkness.

He knew where they needed to search first, and headed directly towards the house they had stored the unconscious townsfolk in. He wondered briefly if he should have just burned them like the rest, but decided that they had done their best to protect these people. But this feeling that pricked at the back of his neck, like the breath of cold air right down his spine – told him otherwise.

They reached the squat wooden hut, and he beckoned Xander over. He had given the boy the torch because he needed the light more than Garland himself, but even he could not see in perfect darkness without aid of a potion, so he needed the light to see into the pitch black of the hut. It was only as he did this he realized the night was no longer clear, and that clouds had formed in the sky.

In any case, the moment Xander opened the door and shed light upon the villagers resting bodies, there came a sound like nothing the apprentice had ever heard, and Garland himself had only heard once. It was like a whispered shriek, if you can imagine such a thing. It chilled them through their skin and into their very bones, and the thought of it – for I have heard it too – gives me gooseflesh to this day.

It was the wail of the dead.

>Cont’d
>>
It came from behind them – nay all around them! Garland was first to act, whipping his body around and letting his body fall into a combative stance.

He had heard these voices before, once when he invaded an old crypt to help deal with a series of disappearances. It was then that he found the red blade Bloederhena – which now rested at his back with the new name Red Fang – and liberated from its resting place. Sure enough now as he faced the street he saw the same breed of creatures rising from the mist as he had seen on that chilling night.

They appeared like disembodied humanoid bodies, with thick gray fog connecting their limbs to their torso, as they floated on a cloud of black smoke. Their flesh was sickly and rotted looking, though even as he looked at it he realized he could just barely see through them, observing walls of the houses that lay behind them through their hovering bodies. In their hollow faces glowed eyes like hot coals – that is if hot coals glowed blue.

These beings were Wraiths, the hateful and painful memories of the deceased incarnate, brought back due to their undying emotions. As Garland had faced these beings before, he knew just how to handle this situation.

Wraiths are not incorporeal as many common folk such as us may hear from folk tales or scary bedtime stories. They are physical incarnations of dark emotion, brought out through extraordinary circumstances – usually in places with a lot of unresolved deaths such as the hamlet of Culan. That being said they are still quite tricky beings to kill, as conventional weapons are useless against them. Even most bombs and signs have little effect, the exception to this rule being Igni and fire based bombs. To Garland’s knowledge there was little more effective for killing Wraiths than open sunlight, (unless of course we’re talking Noonwraiths), fire or silver.

But killing the Wraith itself would do nothing to quell the horrific spirits for long, it would only serve to delay their rebirth. Usually the only way to remove a Wraith’s existence is to burn the body of the deceased, or to end the curse which had brought them back from their peaceful afterlife. In Garland’s case, the answer was clear.

Before him now were five of these awful beings, closing in around the little hut, circumventing any hope of escape. The only fire at their disposal now was in the hands of Xander, which was good, as it meant that fewer spirits would approach him. Even as he watched, he could see their burning blue eyes were focused mainly upon he himself. Wraiths were dangerous, especially in numbers, he had to ensure his own safety, as well as that of his apprentice.

>Attempt to combat three by yourself, leave the other two to Xander

What happened was I work on a gradient scale of success, so 40 was enough for me to tell you how to kill them - which you already knew anyway probably - but not enough to end their respawning for good

22 changed that, so I had to scrap my post about how Garland never truly understood Wraiths.

Garland looked across the open doorway to see Xander cringing back against the wall, his stance completely ruined by his fear of the Wraiths that had appeared before them. His sword lay uselessly at his side, the torch thrust our like an offering of peace more than a weapon, if he didn’t do something the boy would likely be slaughtered by the sharp claws of the spirit before he had a chance to stop them.

“INTO THE HUT! NOW!” he snarled, swinging out his blade an an oncoming Wraith and narrowly missing its barely corporeal ribcage as he did so. It had the effect of sending the creature back a bit, and that was enough. He grabbed the apprentice by the shoulder and roughly dragged him into the hut.

As they stumbled into the darkness, lighting the room of barely living bodies with Xander’s torch, an idea came to Garland that would likely get them out of the situation, if a little burned. He reached for his potion belt, and drew the vial of sickly brown-red fluid known as Crimson Oil. He didn’t bother with the cork, and simply dashed the vial against the nearest wall, splattering the liquid across said wall, and the ceiling and dirt floor too.

“Light it!” he demanded, glad to see his words getting through, and the boy’s pale face filling with understanding almost instantly. He was regaining his composure rather well, which was good because things would be difficult now, as the Wraiths were pouring into the building like horrific beings of black fluid.

As Xander tossed the torch to the splash of Crimson Oil, sending a jet of blue flame up the wall and startling the demons of hatred and pain, Garland lunged forward with his silver sword in hand. He thrust the weapon through the nearest Wraith, hearing its whispered shriek of pain burst up, as the others cried out similarly in what would be the closest thing to fear these beings could feel.

>Cont'd
>>
From the corner of his eye he saw that one of the other Wraiths was lunging for Xander, perhaps in spite for what the boy had done. He would have to handle it alone, for Garland’s peripherals were soon filled with more Wraiths, even as the one he had struck hovered back and away from the painful silver blade.

He felt their cold presences close in on him, he didn’t need to see their claws coming forth to know what came next. He tried his best to move out of the way, and was just fast enough to avoid the worst of it, feeling the incorporeal – yet very physically painful – claws dash his left shoulder and the warmth of blood replace their icy grasp.

The fire was spreading now, climbing across the thatched roof and along the wooden walls, but it was still nowhere near satisfactory for his plans. He glanced up, three Wraiths coming for him now, one engaged in combat with Xander behind him, and one still hovering out of his reach.

Well fuck the dice in this thread...

So, fuck those sleeping people in the hut, amirite?

Those of you who have been in a fight will know that there are benefits to close quarters encounters. It is relatively easy to keep sight of all of your opponents, there is little room for them to encircle you and they are forced to group together, which can be useful if you can sweep across them with a sword. This was all true of this situation, the problem of course being that these close quarters were on fire, and Garland needed to clear a path for himself and his apprentice.

Ignoring his wounded shoulder – it was his left anyway, his sword arm was fine – he lunged forward again, dancing over the bodies that littered the floor of this place as he did so. The three that had been attempting to encircle him also lunged forward, as if working on a hive mind which for all Garland knew truly existed.

He heard a violent “raaagh, fuck!” from behind him, but couldn’t allow himself to bother with Xander for this moment.

Whether the cry distracted him, the Wraiths were too fast for him, or dancing across the littered bodies was too difficult for him, I do not know, but at that moment Garland lost his balance, just as one of the Wraiths clawed at him with its terrible black fingertips. He felt the searing cold run up his sword arm, and his blow flew wildly to the side, missing all three Wraiths. It was a wonder he managed to keep a hold of it in those conditions!

A second blow came soon, tearing up the left side of his chest, and the deep pain of those hateful beings’ strikes and his off-balance stance sent Garland to the ground. He rolled away, bouncing over corpses gruffly and only aggravating his wounds as he did so, but at least it brought him out of range. Squinting against the pain he rose to his knees, surveying the hut. Still the fire had not engulfed the entire building, but he may not be able to hold off the spirits for much longer, and by the sounds of that cry Xander wasn’t doing well either.

“We’re getting out of here, now!” Garland snarled through his teeth, biting back the pain and not even sure if Xander was alive to hear him.

It was then that he saw something that somehow managed to bring a smile to his face even in this grim situation. His apprentice came rushing forward out of his peripheral vision, screaming like a madman, with his head oozing blood from a forehead wound.

“Suck my prick you ghost-shit cunts!” he cried, slashing viciously – but with keen precision – at the Wraith that was closest to Garland’s hunched form. It hissed in pain, but only managed to do so briefly as Garland himself drove forward, penetrating its ghostly skull and dispersing it into a thick gray haze of mist with one powerful blow.

“Out! Now!” he repeated, and without waiting for confirmation forced his muscles into action, driving his powerful legs forward. He slashed at the ghosts that barred his path, feeling one blow hit barely-there… well I can’t really call it flesh, yet what else to call it? In any case he struck one before diving out of the burning building, and was happy to see Xander hot on his heels as he turned.

“Don’t let them out!” he hissed, holding an arm to his blood right forearm, trying to stem the blood flow. He would need as much blood as he could to keep that arm functioning while the building collapsed.

Even as he said it Xander one of the Wraiths swooped around and came towards them, even as the walls began to crumble to ash and the flaming ceiling topple down upon the others. He heard multiple shrieks as not only were the Wraiths burned, but their precious bodies were too. Yet still that swooping creature still clawed forward, swiping for first Xander and missing, then Garland. But the creature was dead before it could get within striking range.

Garland looked at the boy as the pair of them habitually wiped their blades on some long grass nearby, even though the only blood splatters came from their own wounds. There was a fire dancing in his eyes, something different to the battle calm that had filled them when they attacked the Harpies. It wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it could mean trouble – he would keep an eye on it.

“You’ve done well, a Wraith is not a simple opponent, to have bested even one in combat is an achievement. Now let us go and tend to our wounds.” He said, patting the boy on his shoulder with a smile upon his lips. “But remember, we are professionals, act as one and keep your tongue still while you work your blade.”

This chastisement was but a formality, every hot-blooded youth – even Garland – had cussed in combat before. Still it was a lesson that needed to be taught, lest the Panthers be known as a bunch of rowdy pig men.

The two returned to the inn and bandaged their wounds. It appeared that Xander had avoided serious harm. He had a small abrasion on his left arm, and the gash on his forward was shallow. Apparently the Wraith had just managed to strike him before it died, its fingers dispersing to mist as it cut him. Garland’s wounds were a little more serious, but nothing life threatening. They were easily cleaned and bandaged, though he knew the throbbing in his sword arm would be an issue, and perhaps the pain in his left shoulder would interfere with signs. Only time and another battle would tell.

The Wraiths were dead, their source of existence currently burning to smoulders under the wreck of an old wooden hut, the Harpies were dispatched and the hamlet seemed safe. And yet Garland was not satisfied, having Xander grab another torch (and thanking the Gods for Jyrrgen’s insistence he take some) they set off to search the town yet again.

In the brief time that they had been hiding away in the traveller’s rest, the whole hamlet seemed to have changed. As he stepped out into the cool night again, he noticed that his first breath of air was sweeter than before, though tainted with the smell of not only burned wood, but also smouldering corpses. He briefly remembered a contract in which he had come across a cannibal, and remembered how the man described his meals as “manpork” and stifled a grimace.

Together they inspected the hamlet, not even sure what they were searching for at this point. The clouds and mists that obscured the sky and earth respectively had seemingly dissipated along with the Wraiths, and they could see rather well by moonlight.

But all they could find nothing out of the ordinary in Calun, save for a hungry hound which they scared off with a wave of the torch. Xander had wanted to feed it – good natured as he was - but Garland refused, you could never tell when such mongrels were feral. Perhaps Calun had been cleansed.

“There’s nothing to find Garland, we’re done,” Xander grumbled, kicking aside a branch that had fallen across one of the dirt side streets from the trees nearby.

“Aye, time for some well deserved rest.” His master confirmed, and the two headed back to the inn to rest.

Now I could go into how the rest of that night they slept peacefully, save for Garland’s dreams of Elissa Frey and her prophecy when it was his turn for sleep, but I see no need. Well actually… I suppose I just did!

In any case morning came to them without incident, with Xander awaking with an exaggerated yawn and his usual sunny smile. “So Master Garland, how would you say I’ve been doing as an apprentice? I bet you’re glad you brought me instead of that softpot Wolfram, I practically saved your life last night.” And there it was, the youthful boasting of an apprentice after his first big battle. Garland could let him have his little victory, or he could show him what being cocky earned you.

“Ah yes, I must thank you for killing that Wraith mustn’t I?” Garland said, a grim smile running across his lips which would have reminded him of his own master’s had he been able to see it. “After all, I myself only managed to kill one of the FOUR I was battling.” He watched as Xanders smile drooped somewhat, and was glad. It was not that he drew pleasure from taking the pride out of him, it was that a cocky Witcher was a dead Witcher, and this lad was as cocky as they came. “As you’ve shown your prowess, I feel it is my duty to grant you extra responsibility.” To this Xander’s smile grew once more, but it only had the chance to do so for but a second “why don’t you take care of packing the saddles, cooking breakfast, doing the dishes and leaving an explanation for any travellers who pass by this place. That seems like work for a Witcher of your level. I’ll just excuse myself, as I see I’m not needed.”

Jyrrgen and Xander were not the only Witchers with a sense of humour, and Garland left the traveller’s rest with a devil’s grin upon his stubble-dusted face.

The morning outside was already warm, with a cool breeze and a clear sky to mark the beginnings of a good day. It would be good travelling weather, if they chose to leave this day, for Garland still wasn’t sure if he was happy leaving things the way they were. Perhaps it was paranoia, perhaps not.

While Xander was preparing for their departure Garland decided to take a stroll in the woods around the hamlet. There was still the issue of the collared Harpies, and while he might never find an answer, he would be damn sure he would try his hardest before giving up.

He must have been out there for almost an hour when he was beginning to lose hope of finding any sort of clue. He decided to head back to the inn, and turned towards the hamlet. It was then that he noticed just where he was standing.

Through a combination of sheer luck of where he was standing, and his own perceptive skills he realized he was standing right in the sign he had been looking for. Once he saw it there wasn’t the slightest chance he could un-see it. He was standing in the midst of a trail, that branches out from Culan and snaked up behind him towards the hills that would eventually roll into mountains miles from here. It may have been a simple hunting trail, but now that he was looking at it, he could see much more than what he could have noticed during casual observations.

Fresh branches had been bent, very slightly but still perceptibly, and there was even a strand of long gray hair dancing in the breeze. Somebody had come through here of late, perhaps as recently as last night. He had no doubt that had he imbibed the Cat potion, he could even catch their scent still lingering here. He had the clue he had been desiring, now was his time to follow it.

Xander had chosen his fate when he had decided to be cocky, he would wait obediently while his master ended this madness. In case of danger however, he would leave obvious sign so that Xander could follow if need be. He traced the path back to the hamlet first, once there he drew a knife from his belt, and marked the nearest and largest tree. He then turned to follow the path up the slope of the hill, dotting the path with slashes of his dagger against nearby trees.

He followed for what felt to be about thirty or forty minutes, beginning to wonder how far the trail must lead, when he finally saw the crest of a hill ahead of him which had been cleared of trees. Through the overgrowth he could see a small, squat hut, of similar quality to those of the people of Culan. In front of it he could see a figure dressed in dirty brown clothes, kneeling in the dirt, hunched over something he could not see.

Garland dropped low, getting ready to make himself as inconspicuous and quiet as he could. As he did so however, he felt a great jolt of pain ensnare him, as the motion tore open the wound that lay just beneath his armpit. It would not be too bad, as it was bandaged and would clot again, but the sudden and surprising pain caused him to cry out.

“Hwa!? Whoos dere!” came the raspy and lispy voice that could only have belonged to an old man. The figure spun around with surprising speed, but as he did so he put a hand to his back as if he was in just as much pain as Garland. He raised what looked to be a garden trowel above his head like a weapon. “Wolfsh? I’ll end yer ffucken lifesh before ye get’er!” Garland could have been mistaken, but the man sounded drunk too, or mentally ill. Indeed one of his eyes looked glassed over with a cataract, and the other was surely on its way out, as the man swung his head from side to side looking for the “wolfshs”

By the looks of him the old man didn’t stand a threat. Of all the things Garland had been expecting, this was not it. This was a sickly old man, a hermit who lived in the woods. He had likely come down to see what the pyre had been all about, found the town empty and shuffled back to his home in a panic. But Garland was far from trusting, a cocky Witcher was a dead Witcher, had he not explained this to Xander this very morning?

He would announce himself, rising from his crouched position in the bushes he raised a hand to the man – his right hand, so that he might be closer to grabbing his blade should he need to – and offered a greeting.

“Hold there old timer, I’m no wolf!” Garland called good-naturedly from his spot on the path. “I simply came across the trail to your home while lost in the woods.” This was a blatant lie but was he going to explain he was searching for a Harpy controlling sorceress in the woods around a small hamlet? Of course not.

“Wha?” the man seemed confused for moment, perhaps dazed by the sound of another human’s voice. “Come fforwads then shtrangar,” Garland did as he was bid, coming to within five feet of the man, and allowing the hunched, balding old figure to examine him. “Yer tall,” he observed, but said no more on the subject.

“Yer short” Garland shot back, with his devilish smirk spreading on his lips. It seemed he was not the only one to find this funny, as the hermit broke out into a gale of laughter, which ended with him hacking a horrible cough into his right hand. Garland noticed him wipe his palm on his dirty shirt, darkening the cloth with something more than just mucus. The man was definitely sick.

“Ye’d not be the fersht to shay sho,” he muttered absently after cleaning his hand.

“Tell me old man, have you seen anything odd near here of late? I’ve been investigating things lately.”

The man seemed to go into a deep contemplative state, his hazy eyes staring off into the distance as though scrying the answer from the clouds. I do not know about you, but I have always found the elderly and mad unsettling. And though I never met him, I’m sure I would find this fellow bringing chills to my spine.

“Aye, it’s rare to meet nice folk like yourselves.” Garland said, feeling a strange sense of foreboding wash over him as he said those words.

Now there is something you must understand. All this early part of the story I heard from Garland years down the line. I speak only what he has told me but with a bit of bardic flair. But I can tell you with absolutely certainty that Garland truly felt that sense of foreboding. He was not one for flair as I am, and would not have thought back on it in such a manner. As such, I wonder what force must have touched him then and told him of what he was about to see.

As the nameless old codger led him to the hut’s open door, the Witcher’s keen nose began to pick up a sour odour. It was not the same as that he had smelled last night, the scent of pure undeath, but it was close. He turned the corner of the hut and had to stifle another grimace. The man seemed unaffected and entered the hut without pause, moving to the side of his wife, who lay in bed.

Cockroaches scuttled away as he sat upon the bed beside what must once have been his wife. What truly lay there was an old, dry, husk of a human being, eaten away by flies and roaches for what must have been years. Her eyes were long gone, and her lips curled back to reveal yellowing teeth. She was most certainly dead, for a long time too. And yet Garland thought he could see wisps of breath heave in and out from her open mouth.

Around her on the bed lay little glass baubles, swimming with black-purple smoke – like those you may remember from last night’s telling of this tale. And laying at her feet was a long, cruel looking dagger. And yet the man simply sat beside her and stroked her wirey, gray, dead hair like nothing were amiss.

“What is this old man?” Garland snarled, drawing his blade – the Red Fang of course, for the man was nothing supernatural. His wife… that was yet to be seen.

“Now now…” the man said gently, stroking the hair of his wife, almost absently, as though he hadn’t heard the blade come free of it’s sheathe. “Hermine just misses the folks down at Calun. She said if I went down to see them and told her about them, she’d be happy. She says she’s revitalized by the stories of all the youngsters.”

Stories, they are my domain. Let me tell you that no story should ever be stolen the way this man had stolen the memories, dreams and thoughts of the townsfolk. This part of the tale always makes me fiercely angry, to see my art ruined in such a manner.

“Whether you know it or not, whether she controls you or you bound her soul I needn’t know. What you have done is an abomination.” Garland spat, and even as he said the words he doubted them. He killed monsters, this he had made clear when he slew Hermengildo years ago on his first contract, it mattered not if they were man or beast. If this man was a puppet, did he deserve the Bloody Queen’s wrath? Of that he was not sure.

How long has this be going on? When did she become like this?

Let's not get all stabby yet friends. Was she a witch? What was up with the harpies? Or did somebody do this to her? This still somethings we can learn before we stab them and Igni the hut down

There are very few instances where a Witcher will use both of his swords in a single instance. Monsters and men do not often collaborate on their schemes, though in some circumstances theydo work side by side without knowing it. So you can understand how rare it was for Garland to draw his silver blade with his left hand, while still holding the Red Fang in his right. No Panther was taught to use two swords, the free hand is useful for many things, it is the entire point of the Witcher style of combat, but it wasn’t entirely difficult for him to do what needed to be done.

“Rest old man, meet your woman where the apple trees grow.” He murmured softly, as he entered the hut, both swords raising as he did so. The man began to turn, but even if he had turned as fast as he had when first detecting the Witcher, he would not have been fast enough. Garland lunged forward, blue silver pointed for the corpse, and red steel pointed for the man. The two were impaled simultaneously.

The nameless old man slumped, garbling some incoherent last words. But the woman? She began to flail, and I tell you this having never seen it. I can’t truly imagine a wrinkled old corpse seizing like a prophet as her mouth opened and closed in silent screams, but truly ‘tis what happened sure as shit, as my father may have said.

After what must have felt like a full five minutes, she quelled, and Garland noticed that those peculiar not-quite-breaths had ceased as well. He withdrew his blades from the old couple, cleaning old black blood off one, and fresh red off the other before sheathing them both. He shuddered, this place was rife with death, even before this moment.

Though he hadn’t gained any answers from the mad old man, he had gotten some more questions. He searched the hut for answers to these questions, hoping for a diary or a note of some kind that may tell him what had happened here. When he got not answer from the hut, he examined the bodies, first the old man’s, then the woman’s.

In the end he found nothing beyond the magical crystals the harpies had made, and the dagger – which was coated in some queer blue poison he daren’t even touch. He could take the baubles, after all he was heading to see a sorceress and their kind loved magical artefacts such as these. But he didn’t know if he really liked their origins, it felt dirty to keep them.

He gathered the baubles, there must have been at least thirteen glass orbs in all, and that didn’t include the one they still had sitting in the traveller’s rest. He took them in a sack he found under a table that must have served as a kitchen bench at one time or another, any food that had been here was rotten and old. He wondered briefly how the man survived, then decided he might not want to know. He left the place, but not before setting it ablaze with cooking oil and the man’s own set of flint and tinder.

He returned to Xander, who had become worried about his master’s absence, but nonetheless had waited obediently at the inn. “I’m a good hunter, but I’m not going into those woods alone after last night.” He admitted, and Garland was glad to hear some humility in that voice. Their adventure in Culan done, the two set off for the east again, waiting for the day they would finally see those ivory walls and know they had reached the city of Starkhaven, where a curse awaited them.

indeed, you might want to post simple descriptions for those lacking in witcher knowledge

Descriptions for all skills can be found in the Witcherpedia.

But I think I'll leave it, I'm hungry, food's sittin' right here... I could even run again this week if I wanted, but I think two days is probably good for everybody, don't want to flood the system with Witchery
