Let's see... news.

May be in Charlotte over the weekend, so next week's run may be short, but we'll have to see. Even if I don't go out there, the weather's been unseasonably nice latley, so I might go get some time in on the field. Fulda's gonna hurt if i don't hahahaha.

I take that back, Fulda's gonna hurt regardless. oh well.

California should have warned you. It should have let you know the doom that would befall you in Paris. Instead, you ignored it, and now here you are, trapped.

Katya, her head tilted to the side, puts a fist on a hip and repeats her question. “Does this dress make me look fat?”

The dressmaker here has been more than happy to work with Katya- it's been a long, boring day for you, though. You'd considered heading over to a nearby tailor's, though for what, you don't know. Your dress uniform- hilariously out of date- is in the hotel room, just in case. You're pretty sure you rate a couple ribbons that aren't on it, but they're not all that important, really. Ideally, you won't have to wear it, but by the way Katya's acting about buying dresses- and make no mistake, even this tight-fitting black one wouldn't be out of place at a formal event- you're afraid you will.

The dressmaker- herself an older woman, one Rosalie had directed Katya to- stands off to the side a look of knowing pity on her face. Rosalie had said she'd been one of the 'almosts'- a term that set your teeth on edge when Katya had explained it. The woman was 'almost' a witch, able to manifest a familiar, but, like Merlin, unable to interface with strikers. Her daughter, you've discovered, isn't a witch at all.

She'd apparently known Rosalie's mother, and been employed by the Kent family almost exclusively for their civilian formal wear even since. You wonder how many times she's seen this exact scene played out before.

EVASIVE MANUEVERS!

Katya makes a small noise of impatience- your time is running out.

The simple answer is, of course, no. It's the flat truth too- Katya, you have to admit, looks incredible, and the dress is tight in all the right places, the vertical slash up the side revealing just enough leg to leave a person wanting to see more. Well, assuming it wasn't someone who wasn't used to seeing her in strikers or pantsless. Any of the others would have trouble competing right now, honestly. She's been spending a lot of time with the twins, though, so you're relatively sure that's not going to work. That said, while she seems to take delight in occasionally getting you wrong-footed, she's rarely, if ever, out and out malicious.

You pause for a split second before answering with a shake of your head.

“No, it makes everything look absolutely the perfect size.” You say.

She frowns, picking briefly at the material over her hips. “Are you sure? I am afraid I gained weight, and this dress is too tight, it will display it.” She sighs. “I was not spending enough of time in the gym at the castle.”

You nod. “Yeah, I'm sure. It looks great. Madame Bernard is an artist.”

Katya, looking over at the older woman, nods. “We are fortunate Rosalie directed us to you, Madame.”

The older woman blushes a little bit at the compliment, but laughs lightly and shakes her head. “It has been my pleasure to work with you, Miss Litvyak. It is rare young ladies are as patient as you. Now, come, come. We must take a few more measurements.”

The two of them step into the back, leaving you alone in the front of the store with Madame Bernard's daughter- Perrine. She's been pretty quiet the entire time, and you've returned the gesture. She speaks up, after a moment.

“Pardon, monsieur, but are you the Frank Bishop of Berlin?” She asks, holding up a newspaper- one with an old photo of you, looks like the one taken at the white house christmas ball what feels like a lifetime ago. She points at it. “You look just like him.”

You smile and nod, looking at the picture- it's a small color reprint of the one taken back in DC, but there's enough detail you can still see all the little details.

She nods happily. “I thought so! I told mama when you walked in I knew it was you!” She smiles again. “Are you enjoying the city?”

You nod. “It's been great, so far. The food's the best of anywhere I've been.”

“Where have you been?” She asks.

You shrug. “Everywhere. London, Tokyo, San Diego.”

She nods. “Will you be staying here long?”

You shake your head. “Can't. It's back to the war for me.”

She looks sad for a moment, but nods again. “That is what my brother says. He's a Mirage pilot in Poland. I'll be one too, I'm going to polytechnique soon, but I'd rather go to Ecole de l'air. I have heard the ADA prefers students from there for fighters, and that is what I want.”

[] Mixed bag.

“Well,” you say, thinking briefly back to your own decision on schools- you'd had acceptance letters from the air force academy as well, though you'd only applied there on your mother's assistance, and when you'd been accepted to Annapolis, that was that. “I can't say I'd do any different, but Polytechnique might do you better in the long run.”

She considers that, nodding. “I suppose so. There will be much call for Engineers to rebuild Europe after this war, won't there?”

You nod. “Yeah, I imagine so. And you can't fly fighters forever, even the best eventually get too old.”

You don't see much of a point in adding in that that's actually pretty rare for the best- guys like you that are constantly pushing the envelope. Sometimes, shit happens, especially when you're out beyond the bleeding edge.

But, telling that to an eighteen year old, full of hope and dreams, isn't doing anyone any good.

She pauses for a minute, before nodding right as Katya and Madame Bernard walk back in. “I think I'll follow your advice. There is no reason the ADA won't take me for fighter school, and if I decide I do not like it, I can always do something else.”

You laugh, noting that the dress hasn't changed at all that you notice. Madame Bernard prefers to work like that, she's said- viewing it, then altering it in her sewing room while everyone is still there. And while you can't see any differences, Katya looks far more pleased with it.

“What do you think of it now, Monsieur Bishop?” Madame Bernard asks.

[x] Looks amazing. Don't suppose you'd tailor my Dress uniform for me, would you?

“Looks amazing.” You say as Katya spins slowly in place, looking at herself in the mirrors. “I don't suppose you'd do my dress uniform for me, would you.”

Madam Bernard looks happy with the question- maybe business hasn't been that great lately, though it's hard to see why it wouldn't have been. Lot of brass around here, and more than a few French girls, you figure, have learned how to separate them from their money painlessly.

Shit, this being France, it's possible the brass even get some enjoyment out of it. Hard to tell, though.

She eventually nods. “If you bring it in, I'd be happy to work on it. Is it in need of much work?”

Katya tosses a look back over her shoulder and snorts. “No. He is one of those fortunate ones that is able to do nothing but eat and does not gain a pound. Perhaps letting out the shoulders a bit, that is all.”

Madam Bernard laughs and nods. “My son, Marius, he is like that. It will be no trouble at all to work on it monsieur Bishop.”

You're going to respond- you'd have to go get it, and maybe you'd bring it in tomorrow, when inspector Victore walks in.

“Ah, my friends! I see you have found the services of the best dressmaker and tailor in all of France.” He says, nodding to Madame Bernard, who favors him with a glance and a laugh. “She is, also immune to my charms, to my eternal dismay.”

He walks forward, handing both of you an envelope. “I am instructed by her holyness the matron of Paris to deliver those invitations. The witches of Paris intend to hold a formal gathering for all of their visiting sisters and an escort of their choosing.”

He shakes his head. “I suspect it will be laden with general officers and witches attempting to out do one another, but what do I know? I am but a poor police inspector.”

You flip the envelope over in your hands, and Katya shrugs. “I do not see a problem with going, Frank.” She says. “It could be interesting, perhaps we could make some friends that would come in useful later?”

“Or get mobbed by the press.” you supply.

[] Let's not, we can just relax today, huh?

Also, I have no idea how to draw Stingray or M8 strikers. For Tanya witch. Reference pic related.

Not sure what vehicle to use for Boris witch's strikers, either.

Come to think of it, I have no idea what either of their familiars would be.

Also, any requests? I've been keeping a list of shitscribble ideas.

[x] I suppose you're right. I'll have to go fetch my dress uniform.

She looks over at you, and you do detect a bit of disappointment. Well, you suppose it won't actually hurt you, and you may make friends, so what the hell, right?

“I guess you're right. I'll have to go fetch my dress uniform.” You say.

Inspector Victoire laughs. “It will take us no time at all, my friend, you will see.”

Outside, as you slip your aviators on, you notice that there's some other people headed to the shop across the street- a competing tailor, you suspect. Inspector Victoire, to his credit, manages to withold his laughter until after the car door is shut.

“Hah! They are using Blanchet's shop? They are in for a disagreeable time. The old man is good, but he thinks he is the best with a needle and thread.” He says, pulling away from the curb. “Madame Bernard is his superior in many ways.”

You look over, and he grins. “It is also perhaps of importance that I enjoy the company of blondes.”

You just shake your head as he laughs.

The rest of the drive is quiet, and you're back in the car with your garment bag hung in the back, your spotless cover resting carefully on the back seat.

1/2
>>
The two of you crane your necks to watch a pair of Mirages fly overhead on the drive back- while Paris is safely behind the lines, the ADA has kept a pair of fighters up over it, just in case, at all times. It probably makes the people feel more secure, kind of like the display of war machines out on the square in front of your hotel- though you've noted that there's none of the leclerc tanks, like Jean-luc operates.

When You get back to the tailors, Katya is dressed, again, in her more casual wear, her simple sun dress at odds with the elegant black one she was getting. “Madame Bernard is making some final alterations.” She says. “Perrine and I were talking about fighter pilots.”

“Nothing bad, I hope.” You respond with a grin.

Katya laughs, but doesn't respond.

“Monsieur Bishop?” Madame Bernard calls from the back. “You can come back here, please. We will have to hurry to get you all ready for this evening.”

It doesn't take her long, just under an hour- seems like she barely did anything at all, but the slight tightness in the shoulders is gone, the uniform coat fitting like it originally did. The pants she barely had to touch, tightening up the waist less than an inch.

Finishing up, She ends up charging enough that she could live off it for a good month, you figure- though, then again, she probably still took a good chunk of money off for you. Still, it eats a pretty good sized hole in your small-ish stash of MPC, and you realize you'll have to draw more later. Thankfully, your bank account has had time to recover since Christmas.

Inspector Victoire looks at his watch and nods. “we have two hours, my friends. I'll drop you off at the hotel, and summon better transportation.” He laughs. “We will show these people how guests of the republic are treated!”

Hey Ghost remember last thread where I was wondering what kind of cat Brigitte's familiar is? Well I got bored between updates and did a little research comparing different cat breeds and figuring out which could fit the bill. I narrowed down the list of official breeds, sorting by colouration, country of origin, date of origin and stuff like that until I settled on one.

I spent way too long on this

There were a couple that were really close matches but I've decided that Brigitte's familiar is a Ragdoll Cat, known for it's gentle temperament and tendency to go limp and relaxed when picked up.

[x] Sounds like a plan to us.

You look over at Katya, who nods slightly. “Sounds like a plan to us” you say, agreeing.

Inspector Victoire nods, smiling. “Excellent!” He says. “I will inform my unit. We will meet you out here in-” He looks at his watch. “One and a half hours exactly. I will have someone in the lobby for you as well.”

You nod, making your way up to your room. Once the door closes, Katya makes a beeline for the back, depositing the garment bag with her incredibly expensive new dress over the back of a chair as she removes her shoes at a walk and throws her hat on the same chair.

You, meanwhile, make for the back to straighten out your ribbons- it's really only some minor changes to bring them into exactly correct alignment, then you sit down on the foot of the bed and flip on the tv installed in the room.

There's cable here, and you're able to find a BBC channel before too long, though they're playing on of those English sitcoms you really don't follow too well. Still, it manages to eat the hour Katya takes getting ready- you shoot her a glance as she pads out of the bathroom, a towel wrapped around herself.

You step past her just as she takes the towel off, and resist the urge to look back. Girl did that on purpose, you suspect.

You have to resist the temptation to enjoy the hot water too long- showering quickly and taking a little longer to shave than you usually do, making sure it's flawless. Last thing you need is to show up and have some army general or, worse, a marine, correct you on improper grooming.

You manage to finish with a few minutes to spare, walking out to find Katya occupying your old seat on the foot of the bed, already dressed except for her shoes. She looks up and smiles as you struggle into your dress uniform shirt, buttoning it on and frowning as you fight the stupid little neck clasp that holds the shirt's collar ends together. Finally, she gets up and helps, getting it in two tries.

Stepping back, she nods. “You know, you do wear it well, Frank.” She says. “It is a pity you are not wearing more often.”

“Happier in a flight suit.” You respond.

She laughs. “And I am happier in strikers, but I still attempt to wear clothes I look good in when I am not!”

She puts her shoes on and the two of you head downstairs, getting a more than a few glances. Inspector Victoire, in the lounge, does one better and whistles. “My friends, I am beginning to think you do not dress up as to not make the rest of the world jealous.”

You and Katya both laugh.

“Especially you.” He says, looking at Katya. “Ah, were I to be struck blind now it would be a joy, that the beauty I see now should never be eclipsed.”

“I believe you had a ride for us?” She says, laughing again.

He grins and nods. “Of course! Avec moi, please.”

Outside a limo sits on the curb, a metropolitan police car parked just in front. The inspector grins again. “I will ride with you there, but I won't be getting out of the limo.” He says. “There is very tight security there, I am told my team will not be necessary. We will be nearby anyway.”

“Where will this be held?” Katya asks.

“One of the holdings turned over to the people of France by Perrine Clostermann.” He says, frowning. “She may have taken the Englishman's name, but she is French, no?” He shakes his head.

“Regardless, one of her chateaus in the city parks was given to the people of France when the rebuilding of it was completed. The people then donated it to the sisterhood of France, who use it for things like this.” He says. “I have been there before, when I was seeing a wonderful dark-haired girl. Ah, memories.”

The limo and it's escort weave through traffic effortlessly, as the inspector continues narrating. “It is near one of the few bases here in the city, and we do not expect any trouble. Regardless, if there is, help is both nearby and plentiful.” He says, cheerfully. “The house staff are not military, though they are in the employ of the witches. If I may, my friends, be careful what you say around them. They will gossip at the smallest things.”

You nod.

“Lastly, the press will be there, but closely monitored. If you wish to avoid them, you should easily be able to.” He says. “I understand you wish to not deal with them, and I am sympathetic. We will remain on the grounds, if you wish to leave, one of my men will wait in the lobby for you.”

You nod again- he's got this taken care of.

The rest of the ride is fairly quiet, and you finally pull up to a large mansion located just inside one of the two huge parks inside the city. “We are here, my friends.” the inspector says, as the driver of the limo comes around and opens the door, allowing you to step out first. You turn to offer your hand to Katya, helping her out of the car. “We will be here if you need us.”

Inside the building, no one in the grand hall takes notice of your entry- the music is live, orchestral, and there's several occupied tables and chairs arranged around the periphery of the room, while the center remains mostly empty.

Katya takes a short look around, and slips her arm through yours. “Shall we try to locate Rosalie and Jean-luc if they are here?” She says, quietly. “It would be good to have their company.”

[x] Yeah, if they're here.

“Yeah, if they're here.” You say, nodding to another navy officer- you can't get a good look at his shoulder boards from here- when he notices you from the crowd. Good to know you're not the only one here, at least.

The wild array of uniforms on display is bewildering- you note at least a dozen from as many nations in the space of a few minutes. American, German, British, French, a few Polish uniforms, couple Swedes and at least one Finn, though you're sure there's more than that in the mix. You don't see any Japanese, though that's hardly surprising- this isn't their theater. Though thinking about it makes you almost miss Jess.

Almost.

You don't have to look long- Jean-luc intercepts you, his own dress uniform not standing out nearly as much as yours. “Good to see you, Jean-luc.” You say, greeting him as he kisses the back of Katya's hand and shakes yours.

“I would say it is good to be here, but I'd be lying, oui?” He laughs. “Come, let me show you our table.”

“So is this kind of thing common?” You ask.

He shakes his head. “Non, but I am used to them. Rosalie is always invited, and it is no surprise I am always her guest.” He laughs. “The price a man must pay...”

Katya looks around as you pull out a chair for her and she sits. “Is she here?”

Jean-luc nods. “Oui. She is seeing her grandmere and grandpapa right now, they are leaving the city tonight to go to Cannes.” He leans in. “Her grandpapa, he was a flier in the war, his arthritis is bad. The Mediterranean waters help with it, some. They will be spending the winter there, again.”

“Sounds a lot nice than where we'll be wintering.” You say.

Katya laughs. “There are many ways of staying warm, you know...” She says.

“Haven't we been over this before?” You ask, and she laughs again.

“Katya! Frank!” Further conversation is interrupted as Rosalie, clad in the french Navy's witches dress uniform, joins you. “I'm glad you made it. You just missed my grandparents. Are you enjoying it so far?”

You shrug lightly- your uniform doesn't allow much room. “We only just arrived.”

“Ah, well then. Come, come. Allow me to introduce you to some people.” She says, standing up and looking over at Jean-luc, who dutifully stands up as well.
