PREVIOUS THREADS: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?searchall=Strike+Witches+of+Gallia

You are the Rookie.

Something hurts, right in your chest. You force your eyes open, to see rocks, rubble, and debris. What happen to the Nest? That Flamethrower Tank Witch must have really caused some serious damage. But that’s irrelevant, you need to get up. Your muscles and everything feel tense but brittle at the same time. It’s as if something was keeping your down.

You groan, rolling over. You look down to see blood staining your shirt. You press down on it, and it stings like a hornet. It’s a broken rib you think, and probably a deep cut as well. That’s not good. Not good at all.

You remember what happened. You made a leap for Lieutenant McCawlay and Johannes Bucholz. But Menelaus the Impaler, the Ace Neuroi of Hive O-7 caught you and brought you down as the Nest began collapsing. You must have been knocked unconscious in the fall. But where is that Ace?

Oh, you don’t want to know. You look up, to see the bright morning sky, with little wispy clouds high up there.

They must have left you behind. That’s not good. Not good at all.

You suppose this is what you get for dereliction of duty, your hair messed up, your ribs broken, and abandoned by your comrades. You feel like passing out. Maybe this is just a dream.

Your ears perk up.

Oh no. You hear rocks shift and shuffle near you. Then a distorted screech echoes through the dust and debris. Menelaus is still here.

Well, this is the ace from that hive that just wants to fuck everything up. We're probably good if we don't stir, since there's nothing to fuck up about something that's already dead.

Now, if the assimilation hive comes to pick up spoils, we'll be in trouble, but that won't happen because other hives steer clear of the overly destructive one this one is from.
>>
"O" is "Oscar" today, but it was different in WW2. What was it?
>>
> You need to get out of here.

No. You are not dying here.

You turn over onto your chest, yelping in pain. You start crawling- no- dragging your way away from him. You hear some rocks break and explode. You look back. A spear-like leg has broken free from a pile of rocks. No, no. You continue crawling. Come on. Come on.

The entire pile bursts. Menelaus jumps at you, hissing and clicking in your ears as it jumps on top of you. It spears you through the shoulder. You scream as you tossed aside onto a rock, breaking and cracking more bones.

No. Darn it. No. You struggle, but every bit of your body refuses to move. Menelaus skitters towards you, slowly baring its great stinger and two sword-like appendages at you. Now you know why the people of the Ostmark call him the Impaler.

You shut your eyes. This is it.

Commander Maxine Bucholz. Sorry.

You open your eyes. Menelaus stands over you. This huge, insect-like, scorpion thing which has been known to slaughter people left and right, and even kill Neuroi if unattended is not killing you.

Its eyes glow red, then turn upwards towards the sky.

What is that? Is that Rachel? Is she back for you?

Menelaus swipes the ground before you, then skitters away into the darkness.

You look up to the witch. It's getting hard to breathe. Your vision is blurring.

Go on. Reach out. Every last bit of energy you have is put into raising your hand, to reach out to her. She has to help you. She hovers there, observant. Don’t do that! Help! You try to muster the will to scream it, but then she simply flickers away.

No. No!

Her blank face suddenly comes into your view. She places her cold hand over your mouth.

It’s Neuroi.

No. Fight! Don’t pass out. Fight, fight!

Don’t pass out. No. Your vision gets darker, and darker. No. No. No. No.

No.

no

You sniff the air. Is that… cheese? You sniffle at the air again. Hm… There’s also the smell of white sauce as well. Same they use in Venezia. It smells heavenly. You open your eyes to hard concrete walls. You look down. Your wounds are healed. You feel amazing in fact! You feel like running a marathon now!

You look to your left, to see a little kitchen of sorts set up on a counter. Carla Buscaglia is cooking something in a big old pot. She wears an apron over her blouse, and her typical peaked cap of the Venezian Air Force is tilted on her messy hair as usual. She whistles a bit as she cooks, then looks over at you.

“Ah, you’re awake!” She places her hand over her heart. “You scared me a little. You’re just in time actually!” She grabs a plate of pasta, then takes a large spoon and pours a hefty amount of white sauce over it. “It’s my recipe! The last airlift brought in a healthy amount of foodstuffs so don’t be picky, alright?”

You blink, confused. You were just about to die earlier. She sits by your bedside, with a fork. “Come on!” She pouts mockingly at you. “Do I have to feed you like I do Karen? Fine, if that is what it takes!” She plants the fork into the pasta, then brings the hot food over to you. “Here comes the train, choo-choo!”

You open your mouth and let the train come into the tunnel. It appears to be a train of delicacy considering how amazing this is. Carla always did seem to have a knack for making good food out of nothing. You open your mouth to say “What happen?” before you get shut up by more food coming into your gullet.

“Nope. Don’t talk, eat.” Carla is stern as she places the plate onto your lap. “I’ll explain.

“You’re back at the Flak Tower. It’s been two days since you left us, and that meant we were short two witches and a Jeep Jockey. In that time, we managed to open up an air-bridge of sorts between Venezia and this here Flak Tower, get more supplies, reinforcements, and other things in. Jeep Jockey was recently airlifted out, going back to serve with the Army Air Corps in fact. In other news, we still haven’t found the gun, and for all intents and purposes we’re considering it lost to the Neuroi. General Blackstone and Army Group South have been sending in reinforcements and other materiel to help strengthen the place but its only a matter of time.”

You nod. “Okay. How did I get here?”

“It’s the damndest thing,” she says. She shrugs at that, finger at the brim of her hat. “We just found in the forest nearby when the radars picked up a Neuroi signature. You were lying under a tree beneath that very blanket in fact.”

You look down. It’s just an old, scraggly grey blanket. You wouldn’t use this at all, this is a peasant’s blanket. But yet…

Carla sighs. “Anyway. Doc says there ain’t a scratch on you. In fact, you’re at peak condition.” She pokes at your chest. “Which is why you need to eat.”

You huff. “I’m not a child, Carla.”

“The way you strut, I wouldn’t have noticed,” she says happily. She giggles a bit.

You start breathing in pasta at an exorbitant rate. You have indeed found yourself quite hungry. “Sho-“ You swallow deeply. Nope, a woman does not talk with her mouth full. “So. How’s the rest of the wing?”

Carla shrugs. “Doing fine, a little demoralized though considering yours and Rachel’s absence. Uh…” She purses her lips a bit. “Well, Rachel actually got demoted for her little adventure, but nothing else thankfully. And Hermine actually got promoted!”

You blink. “Really?”

“Yeah.” Carla snaps her finger. “Rumor is, Bucky’s grooming her to be a Squadron Leader. I don’t blame her, she’s quite the Witch.”

You sigh. “Well… I suppose it’s nice Lieutenant McCawlay got off lightly.” You notice something off however. Something… missing. “Where’s Karen?”

“Oh, her?” Carla says, “She’s out a patrol flight with Foobs and Daisy.”

“Without you?” You have to admit. It’s actually quite strange not seeing Carla without Karen.

“They have to leave the nest at some point.” Carla sighs. “I must admit to you, Rookie. I didn’t have anybody to mentor me when I was in her boots.” She smiles, wistfully. “It was just me, my Striker Unit, and a whole lotta Roy to deal with. Wish I could’ve been closer to the other pilots of my old unit honestly but what can you do?”

You nod. “Yeah. I suppose.”

“Yep. Plus, that little crash with the Baltimore didn’t help matters,” she says. “Thankfully, nothing lasting but… eh.” There’s a knock at the door. “I’ll get that.”

Carla stands up and walks over to the door as you continue cleaning your plate. The door creaks open to reveal a very mad-looking Commander Bucholz.

Uh oh.

She looks at you. “Sergeant. I see you’re awake.” She looks down at Carla. “Could you give us a minute?”

Carla nods, looking at you with a “you’re so boned and I’m sorry I can’t help you” look. She quietly slinks past the Commander and into the hall. The door shuts behind her as the Commander walks up to your bed.

You look down. It just now occurred to you that you’re actually quite naked under these sheets. Every little happy feeling in your muscles is now gone. Gone like the wind.

“So. Sergeant.” Commander Bucholz wears only her service blouse, with rank on the collar. Her usually neat hair is scuffed and dirty. “Do you have anything to say for yourself?”

“Is that so?” The Commander takes a chair then sits by your bedside. She leans forward, looking you in the eye. “Truth be told, I really wish you had failed. It would have made punishing you more easier.”

You tilt your head. “Commander?”

“Not only did you, Lieutenant McCawlay, and the Corporal steal a Kubelwagen, some ammo, and several guns, you also left a gap in our squadron. The Corporal, he’s Army Air Corps, I believe his wound and his return to the rear area is punishment enough. Lieutenant McCawlay, she is a veteran of many battles, I cannot afford to lose someone like her. You… you on the other hand.”

You swallow deeply, here it comes.

“You three saved over 7,000 prisoners.” Oh. What? “All of them have been returned to duty. Not just that, but you have secured a vital linkage between Karlsland and the Ostmark, however small. This cell now has a fighting chance against Hive K-2. And it’s all thanks to you three.”

“But.” She crosses her arms. “It remains to be seen about your punishment.” She leans back, her glare melting into a more saddened frown. “You know, when I saw Johannes walk over the hill, carrying an MG-42, messy and dirty like a hog. I thought I was dreaming. But when he held me and I held him. He started crying actually. And that made me cry. And it also made Karen and Daisy cry as well.” She pauses a bit. “I don’t know what would’ve happened if he were to shed this mortal coil.”

You nod at that.

“Sergeant. You’ve made this a very tough decision for me. Lieut-“ She groans a bit. “Flying Officer McCawlay took the blame for all of the actions that occurred. However, I still believe you should be punished because I believe you followed her of your own accord.”

With that, she reaches into her breast pocket and pulls out a folded piece of paper. She takes out a pen as well. “This is a letter from the Academy. Stating that I have the right to end your service with the 509th JFW at any time. Once I sign this, you will no longer serve with us, and you will be returned to the Academy. The last plane from here leaves today in fact.”

You stare at the letter. It can’t be.

“I did it for you.” The Commander blinks, sitting up. You continue with, “Seeing you torn up over Johannes… and all that. I just wanted to help you. It is my duty as a witch to help everyone, and that includes my Commanding Officer.”

Commander Bucholz takes your hand, slowly closing her fingers around yours. “Sergeant. I’m touched. I really am.” She frowns. “But it’s not always about me. It’s about the rest of us. Johannes…” She sighs. “I-… I could get over him, eventually. I wouldn’t be able to get over the loss of two of my best witches.”

You bite your lip. She called you one of her best!

Then she leans over, and softly places a kiss on your cheek. You feel the heat rush upwards, ready to burst. After parting her lips away, she lingers there, her hot breathe caressing your ear. All you can do is sit there.

And with that, she plants the letter on the bed, and signs it. “You’re going back to the Academy.” She folds the letter up and places it back into her pocket. “I’ll give you a few hours to get your bearings, and pack your things.” She quickly stands up and walks out of the room.

You blink, shaking a little. “It… it could have been better, Carla.” Carla comes over and takes your plate. “I am to return to the Academy, and leave the 509th.”

Carla frowns. “Oh… oh dear that’s-“ She tips her hat upwards. “That’s quite bad. I think.”

You shrug. “Well, the Academy isn’t so bad. I like it there, I’m the Class Representative. My roommate Rosemary should be finishing her rotation anyway. Maybe we’ll see each other again, that-“ Your vision gets blurry. “Th-that would be nice.”

“Oh, sweetie…” Carla leans over and hugs you. You grind your teeth, sucking in air as you try to hold yourself together. “There there…. Let it out.” She pats your arm. “It’s okay. It’s okay. Those who say crying is for children are children themselves. “ You bury your face into her chest, sobbing quietly into her apron. “There, let it out.”

“I…” You shudder. “I-I don’t want to go!”

Carla continues hugging you, quiet. Your only comfort.

A few minutes pass. You start feeling a bit better. Carla says, “You know. I think the others should be back from their Patrol. Maybe go say goodbye to them?”

You sit in the back of the Mack NO truck “Brandenburg” where some of your personal effects were stored. You pack the items quietly. Everything from your books, to your tea packets, to your spare uniforms, and even the blanket that you were found in. You sigh.

You pat your breast pocket. Hm? You reach in to find a stack of baseball cards. DeSoto’s baseball cards. You place them back. Maybe you might find him again when you return to the Academy. What else, what else?

Your sidearm, of course. You search around.

… Where is it?

“Looking for this?” You look back to see the gigantic Johannes Bucholz. Now dressed in Fallschirmjaeger uniform, and carrying an MG-42 over his shoulder. He holds out your revolver to you, smiling a little. “I cleaned it for you, figured I would return it.”

You take it gently, smiling. “Thank you…” You check the rank on his shoulder. “… Corporal.”

“Please, call me Johannes. Call me whatever you’d like in fact. I owe a great debt to you,” he says. “My sister must be very grateful to you as well.”

You nod. “She is. I’m sure. I know she missed you very much.” You turn and go back to packing your things.

Johannes says, “Well… okay. Do you need any help packing?”

“No, thank you, Corporal.”

“Well, okay,” says Johannes. “Could I at least know your name?”

You smile, then turn back to him. “I’m Sergeant-“

“Bucholz!” Johannes turns to someone out of your view. He sighs, rubbing his nose.

“I’m sorry,” says Johannes. “I must go. But you must write to me. I will write to you, okay?” You nod. He’s got somewhere to be at least. He seems like a nice man at least. You can understand why losing him would crush the Commander. Once everything is done and packed away, you throw the strap of the bag over your shoulder, then hop out of the truck.

Right in front of Hermine Graf. She smiles at you. “Hey, honey.” You sigh as she clasps her hands in front of her, polite. “I uh… heard you were leaving us.”

“I know you hate me.” You stop, then turn around. Graf stands there, arms crossed. “Now, I know you’ve been through a lot and you might not want to talk, that’s fine. Just…” She frowns, looking down at the ground. “I hope you do well at the Academy. I’d like for you to stay if at all possible.”

You frown back at her. “What do you want from me?”

She shrugs. “A friend. A rival I’ll take too.” She smiles a little. “I’m whatever you’d like for me to be.”

You huff. “Figures. Can’t decide whether or not you want to be nice, arrogant, or some strange combination of the two.”

She offers her hand. “Just take care of yourself.” You look down at her hand.

> Don’t shake her hand

You look down at her hand, then shake your head at her. She looks surprised, for a second at least, then places her hands behind her back and nods. “Very well. So long then, honey.” She smiles warmly at you. “Next time I see you, I expect you to outrank me.”

You roll your eyes at that, then turn around and walk away. Graf. Damn her.

On the makeshift airfield is one little plane, a C-47 Skytrain. The pilot and the co-pilot discuss things with Commander Bucholz. “Listen,” says the pilot. “We gotta get into the air now, our window is closing so if you have anything left for us to take, let us know now.”

Commander Bucholz nods. “I have a girl who needs to go back with you all. You should have some space.”

The co-pilot says, “It’s a Dakota, we can take anything in there.”

You walk over and then salute. “Ma’am.” The Commander nods, reaching into her blouse pocket and then handing you the letter, along with a separate piece of paper. “What’s this?”

“My letter of recommendation,” she says. You smile at her a bit. “Just in case you need it.”

The pilot says, “Well, come on. We gotta get moving.” You nod, then start to follow him aboard.

“NO!” Daphne flies right into your path, arms wide. “You can’t go!”

You blink. “Daphne…”

“I won’t let you!”

The Commander narrows her eyes at Daphne. “Fairbanks. Move aside.”

Vera steps in as well, taking your arm. “I will not let the Rookie go either, not without a fight!”

Karen takes your other arm. “Rookienee-san did nothing wrong!”

Well… technically you did.

Daisy, Rachel, Graf, and Carla step in behind Commander Bucholz, surprised. Commander Bucholz says, “She is to leave.”

Daphne says, “The Rookie is my friend. If she goes I go.”

He has a point, though. Graf does nothing of note, yet gets praised all around, promoted and groomed for a position she's done nothing to prove she could handle, while the soldier that rescues just about 7000 soldiers to be reinstated back to duty gets kicked out of the squadron and sent back to the academy. It's jarring because we never see her do anything that would actually earn that kind of treatment or unreal praise.

>>
>>34444010
The guy you're talking about here. Rookie getting sent back to the Academy is, in a way, an extremely light punishment. I mean, Academy is basically their officer training school, which means Rookie will come back as an officer rather than enlisted. The main part of the "punishment" is that she has to leave her friends and the Commander behind.

And really, Rookie deserves some sort of punishment: she did help rescue a huge amount of soldiers, but did it through disobeying tons of rules and orders.

And I'm not going into Graf right now because I made it clear several times why I don't like her, and you don't really seem to have the same reasons I dislike her.
>>
>>34444080
She's also not a dirty fucking snitch like Rookie is.
>>
>>34444075
No I'm not. I simply think that not only would a short separation from the crew help both Rookie's and their characterization, but also that if you're gonna take the whole insubordination thing this far it'd be really dumb to go back on it now. I mean, I can't fathom why anyone would think a spell away letting the characters ruminate on the whole situation and allowing for some interesting potentual development for Rookie would be worse than 'lel just kidding is all fine!'

You look down, staying quiet for now.

Commander Bucholz says, “Fairbanks. Move aside.” Daphne, Vera, and Karen are as immovable as stones on a beach. “Do not make this harder.”

Vera says, “We will defend her to the end.”

The Pilot of the plane yells, “Hey, have your heart-to-hearts quicker. We gotta get the hell out of here!” He crawls back into the plane.

Carla looks over at Karen. “Karen, come on. The Rookie knows what she’s doing. Let her go.” Karen grips your arm tighter. “Come on, Karen.” She looks up at you, and you give her a knowing look. Karen gently lets go then stands by Carla.

“Vera.” Graf is quite stern with her. “Come on. Commander’s orders.” Vera puffs her cheeks out, glaring at her. “Don’t make this harder on her.” You shake your arm a bit, pulling it free from Vera. Vera looks down, then kicks at the ground and walks away.

The last obstacle is Daphne. She still holds her arms out, determined. “Please don’t leave.”

Well, I'll admit that it's partially because she seems to be getting a lot of praise and now even promotions over doing nothing, at least nothing the PC hasn't already done, but also because she doesn't seem to be written to infuriate the PC. Rather, she seems to be written in a way to be as infuriating as possible to the players as opposed to the character we're playing. She hasn't really given the actual character a reason to hate beyond "you should hate her" being sort of mentioned in the narrative.

That's also a problem, though. Not seeing the reason, and the reason not being revealed to us, just makes the promotion all the more jarring since it was just kind of dropped in the middle of us being told off for disobeying orders. It's polarizing, and seems more like it's meant to inspire hatred from the players' side of it rather than that of the Rookie.

I don't really find her infuriating at all. I'm not a big fan, but more because I don't really find her interesting. And the idea of being mad she got promoted seems strange to me when, while she hasn't shown a lot to us since her appearance, she by all accounts follows the rules and whatever she did that got her promoted in the first place happened out of our sight precisely because we DID break the rules. In the end I wouldn't have minded if she didn't get promoted either though, doesn't seem very necessary.

Bucholz obviously sent us off because she was worried about Rookie getting herself killed, not because she 'deserved' it or the like. And it's pretty hard to disagree. I imagine there were other factors involved regarding Rachel.
>>
>>34444598
Marseille worked because she was only on for one episode, she was legitimately a foil for Barkhorn and Erica, she had personality, and her character was consistent.
>>
>>34444598
I really didn't care about her one way or the other but I'm so fucking tired of people screaming about how much they hate her that I've started defending her
>>
>>34444572
We are a scrub, you can probably count our shoot downs on one hand, and we have a single award for the stunt we pulled at the academy. Rachel has fought on multiple fronts, seen multiple campaigns, that's what I mean by veteran. Someone needs to get punish, and be seen to get punished, and given the call between her and us, it's us that they can afford to loose for a bit.
>>
>>34444599
Jesus if you're that upset just leave and come back later with a cooler head.
>>
>>34444598
She FAR more likeable and better in Afrika Doujin. Like, far better. Maybe having Kei on her side keep her on check.
>>

>>
>>34444598
If we'd reacted to Graf the same way Erica reacted to Marseille, I'd bet it would have gone a damn sight better, but /tg/ does tend to grab on to any bad impressions and massively over react to characters. People still talk about Rookie the snitch for fucks sake.

>>
>>34444701

>>
>>34444701
Rookie the snitch is actually endearing in that it's a negative trait for a main character. And plus she snitches on herself.
>>
>>34444572
I have a sneaking suspicion that we're going to come out of the academy as a commissioned officer; we're a Sergeant now, which I believe is an NCO. It might end up being for our benefit; a sort of officer training course.
>>
>>34444499
>We accept our perfectly fair punishment (which from a non-meta standpoint is as much a benefit, given it means Rookie gets a safe period training for officer rather than risk her life as a Witch) without excess complaining, sounds like the dictionary definition of dignified to me.
I agree.

What I don't agree with is suddenly going "oh no, this means we can't ever have a chance with the Commander, oh well lets chase dick"

> “We’ll write each other, okay?”

You hug Daphne. Her arms are out anyway, you might as well. “Sorry, but I have to. You write to me, okay?”

Daphne stands there, refusing to hug you. “I’m not hugging you because you’re not going.”

You break from the hug, holding her by the shoulders. “You come visit me, okay?” You adjust your bag and a bit then step past her and onto the plane. You turn back again to face the entire squadron. Daphne is in full tears now, with Daisy coming to care for her.

Commander Bucholz stands there, then gives you a salute. You salute her as well. The rest of the squadron give you a salute as well, as best they can.

The C-47 starts up, and you step around to take your seat around all crates and other cargo in the plane. You sigh, leaning back against the wall of the plane. Well, back to the Academy. Maybe if you’re lucky, you’ll get rotated into another Joint Fighter Wing, or into a Tank Squadron.

The tears streaming down your cheek won’t let you go without a fight though.

I wouldn't worry too hard on that front, after MMQ Schteel said that he really didn't like running suffering and that which is why I suspect it came to such an abrupt end and he's said before that he intends SW to be more action/ adventure/ yuri and generally pretty close to the canon style.

Seriously, anon? I think most people knew that MMQ was going to basically end in a reenact of All's Quiet on the Western Front. Schteel also acknowledged that MMQ was nowhere close to his best.

Do you have any faith in Schteel at all? If not, why follow a quest like this? People can save themselves a lot of trouble by dropping quests when a QM loses their trust.

Would have worked with that Avatar quest fellow anyway.

The low hum of the propellers keeps you awake. You’d like to take a nap, but it’s far too late now. So much has happened now. Why would she send you away?

Maybe it was to protect you?

Maybe she really does love you? It would be fraternization given rank and everything.

“Hey, Joe.” The pilot looks over at his co-pilot. “I’m getting some turbulence.”

“Probably nothing,” says Joe. You can feel your ears twitch a bit. Why would she just leave you to-

It gestures, with open hands, closing into fists over its eyes. What is it saying?

… hide? Your ears twitch again.

It’s not her.

You quickly run to the front of the plane. “Evasive action!” you yell.

“What?” says the pilot.

A black smoke flies across the windshield. Oh no. Little fly-like Neuroi crawl over the windows, forcing their way through into the plane. Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.

We don't have a Striker and all we have is our sidearm. I doubt we had the foresight to grab ammo on the way out, so we'll have six shots at most to combat a horde of tiny death flies apparently fierce enough to warrant being an ace.

Fuck fighting that thing, running in a plane that's currently high up in the air doesn't seem like a great idea, I don't think the Neuroi girl is gonna engage in some good 'ol friendly fire...

Run to where, exactly? We don't have our Strikers with us (as far as I recall), so our only escape option is 'jump out of the plane and hope Neuroi girl saves us'. Even if we have a parachute, it'll just make us a sitting duck.

Is it time for semi-neurification already, Schteel?

Or maybe it's Bucholz's way of wanting to show Rookie that she's still supporting her no matter what she decides to do: her personality probably won't let her admit it, but she's most likely take Rookie back into the unit if given the opportunity to without looking like she's giving preferential treatment or such. Her sending Rookie to the academy and giving her a recommendation is kind of skirting what she should and shouldn't do already.

“Here!” yells the co-pilot. He hands you a BAR.

“Why do you have a BAR!?” you yell at him.

“These kinds of situations,” he says simply.

“Just go and bail out! I’ll cover you!” The pilots leave the controls, grabbing their parachutes as they head into the back. The plane shakes and tilts as it flies downwards out of control. You load the BAR and fire at Glaucus. The little bugs skitter and skirt their way along the controls, immediately right the plane again and almost knocking you off balance.

You fire again through the windscreen. Glaucus however, is an Ace, and unlike other Neuroi he’s not particularly solid. In fact, some say he’s just a swarm of little buzzers that absorb materials.

“We’re hitting the silk, you be right behind us!” yells the pilot. He and the co-pilot jump out to safety.

The walls of the C-47 suddenly turn from brown and olive drab, into Neuroi black. Hexagons flash blue across the walls. It’s absorbed the plane.

You quickly make a run for the exit and jump out. No way you’re getting eaten by Neuroi, no sir! Your ears and your tail sprout as you pull up a shield. This landing is going to be rough-

You’re caught by the Neuroi girl. It looks down at you, face blank as ever.

I didn't watch Strike Witches, what was the storyline behind Neuroi Girl?
>>
>>34445548
Some kind of infiltration model Neuroi Yoshika "befriended": it led her to one of the hives to do something, dunno what, then Sakamoto rescued Yoshika and Yoshika tried to save Neuroi Girl. Don't remember what else happened other than Yoshika somehow getting psychic waves of the Warlock experiments which led to her discharge and disbanding of the 501st by Mallory.

> “Thanks!”

I think I remember reading somewhere that they were trying to subvert witches with those models. When the Gallian hive dispersed, Neuroi Girls popped up again in Venezia before another, much larger hive destroyed them. They didn't appear for the rest of the series.
>>
>>34445548
It's a humanoid, non-aggressive neuroi that interacts peacefully with Yoshika until it gets attacked. It may have been an attempt at an infiltration model, a trap to try and capture a witch by faking an overture of peace or a genuine attempt at peace, but the unit and it's hive were destroyed by the Warlock shortly afterwards.

IIRC they attempt a peaceful contact experiment with the Romagna hive at the start of the second season, but a new, larger and more aggressive hive emerges above it and destroys it in the middle of the attempt before they get any actual results.
>>
>>34445677
I forgot about the Best Girls at the beginning of season 2, actually. Yeah, they were basically a plot that the writers dropped like bad rhymes.
>>
>>34445703
>they were basically a plot that the writers dropped like bad rhymes.
Yeah, I guess that's the problem with a multi-media franchise, it's kinda hard to do anything big like that.
Still, at least it give the Neuroi a bit more depth with their mystery.
>>
> “Thanks!”
> Keep engaging Glaucus

You smile at the Neuroi. “Um. Thanks?” Wait, Glaucus. Right. You climb onto her shoulders, then reload the BAR.

Glaucus’ C-47 flies level, now Neuroi black and spotted with red hexagons on the wing. It rolls left and begins turning towards you. Then snap, the wings fold, the hull splits in half, and the cockpit shears into many little pieces. The new C-47 transforms into a frightening machine of battle.

It blasts a large beam at you, which you deflect handily with your shield. You continue firing the BAR, one-handed as you keep another hand for the shields. “Bring me closer!” you yell.

The Neuroi girl pursues Glaucus as it flies over you. You take shots as you hang on its rear.

Then, with your final shot, it blows right through the thin armor of the C-47. The entire thing breaks apart, blasting into white mist. The smoke of Glaucus forms up again into a nasty swarming cloud. You aim again at Glaucus.

Then it retreats, back into the forests and away from you.

You laugh a little. You just defeated an Ace! You may not have killed it, but you got the upper hand on it! And it’s all thanks to your friend the Neuroi!

Wait.

The Neuroi Witch sets you down next to the two pilots. You had heard rumors of witch-like Neuroi, especially coming from the Warlock project. You didn’t think they actually existed. What is this thing though? And why does it help you?

“What is that thing?” says the pilot.

It hovers above you, staring down on you with its blank face.

“Um, thank you for your help,” you say. “But… why?”

It reaches out to you.

Sure, but these are Japanese people working on a collaborative project, stepping on other peoples toes would not be a good idea, and getting agreement between the anime writers, the LN writers and the manga writers on things like shifting and expanding the nature of the Neuroi would probably take more time and effort than anyone wants when you can just stick with what's already been established.

Yeah, the Neuroi are actually really interesting, they have been seen to fire on each other, they employ different tactics with different levels of aggression, they have a hive mind that can be hacked but also a degree of independence and individuality with each unit. There is some creativity in their thinking, but also some level of mechanical stupidity.

> Gustav

You blink, then motion over to the one reading “Gustav.”

The screen widens, getting up into your face. It’s like a theatre thing of sorts.

It shows the Schwerer Gustav, being dragged along by Neuroi heavies. They must have found it. That’s not good, that’s so not good at all. The screen blinks to show the giant Railgun be lowered into some kind of huge armored shell, reminiscent of a beetle shell you think. It bristles with captured Flak 88s, and it appears to have caterpillar tracks from melted down tanks and the like.

They found the gun. And they’ve built a monster.

>>=[| Neuroi Ultra-Capital Class |]=<<
>>=[| Looted Schwerer Gustav |]=<<

“But how?” you ask. It simply stares at you.

Oh. Right. It doesn’t appear to be able to talk. That’s awkward.

>>34446452
Kind of, yeah, though German shot himself in the foot with LGA in that he fumbled Eugene, the male love interest, hard, and Murphy pretty much killed any sort of heterosexual ending afterwards.

Really though, I wouldn't mind if the "romance" of this quest stayed more flirting and non-committal like the show was. Romance isn't really the focus here, and I think it would suit everyone better if there wasn't any sort of subplot related to that. German ignoring the kiss Bucholz votes, in retrospect, was probably the better move (coming from a guy who voted for it).

My complaint isn't they don't end up with girls, but that they're always bi* and it always manifests in them drooling and stuttering at hunks, which is annoying. I'd accept a genuine straight romance from a FeMC of his (though not in this quest) if I could just escape that in any future quests of his like this one.

*In his serial quests except MGL which had zero romance that is. Yuri quest was just randumb nonsense anyway.

>But isn't it the ending you want in which you get the waifu you like in the end?
I'm not sure what this means, but assuming you're trying to say the end result (FeMC x best waifu) is what matters, then eh. In terms of the romance itself, it's most important, but it's not EVERYTHING. The way Schteel does it has two main drawbacks to me, one is I find the way he writes their bisexuality really really dumb as if he's overcompensating for player choice (oh they're all going after ladies, better make the MC drool at this nice piece of manflesh or dream about fucking a celeb so they remember she's TOTALLY BI GUYS, NOT LESBIAN, BI), and the other is that it just facilitates arguments like most bi FeMC quests, and it'd be nice to just get QM veto on it so that doesn't start. As much of a /u/-fag as I am, I really loved that in Hellborn, the QM just shutting it totally down.
>>
>>34446730
Yeah, uh, that was a bit of a cluster. I actually liked the idea of the MC (maybe) dying trying to save Rookie, but that last vote was kind of a mess.

>>34446664
I actually enjoyed that quest (last vote aside); it was dark and dour, and it was upfront about it. I especially like how Rookie became the morality pet/little sister/whatever that ended up being the MC's doom.
>>
>>34446786
But once you route lock with the girl does it still matter, it all about them doing stuff now.
>>
Someone needs to draw a SU-152 hiding in the bushes, continually stalking Schteel's MCs Hetzer style.
>>
>>34446800
Rookie was shot from a 152mm projectile which was used to kill Tiger II tanks. That's not saving rookie that was just suicide (I think quadruple suicide) considering getting rid of the threat from the start led to our mate being killed too.
>>
>>34446800
I didn't mind the dark seriousness, but I think the other witches should have been more likeable and more fleshed out, and it shouldn't have been as aimless up until the final thread. Alternatively, it could have gone the dark-humor route a la the final season of Blackadder I guess. But the lack of direction and the mostly unpleasant characters turned me off it, Rookie and doctor guy were the only ones I enjoyed interacting with (and the latter only grudgingly being a yurifag).

> Unprepared

You press the one signing as “Unprepared.”

It then shows a map of Karlsland. The Flak Tower cell under General Heinrici. The 509th are also labelled as well.

Then it shows two black swirls closing in on them. Hives. One from the southeast, that must be O-7. Another from the northeast, that must be K-2. A third label, simply a big black triangle, is next to K-2. That must be the Looted Schwerer Gustav.

It then cuts to images of the Flak Tower base. Soldiers lounge around, celebrate the return of the long-lost comrades. The 509th Joint Fighter Wing sulk in their truck, Daphne in particular looks very sullen. It cuts to Commander Bucholz, resting her head on her desk in her office, her shoulders shaking a little. Is she crying?

It then cuts to the short General Heinrici, pointing to a map next to his General Staff. Markings on the map indicate he’s planning an offensive. A doomed one.

You blink. You go to press “Weakness”.

Suddenly, the hive shudders and roars like a monster. The Neuroi witch looks up, then immediately grabs you. “Wait!” you say. “I-“

You open your eyes. What? You sit up and look around, you’re in what appears to be village. You hear vehicles approaching. There’s a flicker of light out of the corner of your eye. You didn’t get everything! You thought had time!

But you know now. That cell is going to be crushed if they don’t get help.

Suddenly, a pair of Jeeps roll up, crewed by Liberion Army soldiers. They look down at you. “Whoa! Where the hell did you come from?”

Someone needs to know. Now.

> “Take me to your General!”

You run up to them, nearly tripping over your shoes. “I- I need to get to someone important! Soldier, what’s your unit?”

The driver says, “1st Armored, who’s asking?”

You say, “Flying Sergeant-“

The gunner of the mounted .50 Caliber gun says, “Hold on. You’re from the 509th? What are you doing here? Ain’t you supposed to be in Karlsland?”

Oh for- Oh, whatever. “I need to get to your commanding officer, I have information that could make or break things in Karlsland, and time is of the essence!”

The driver blinks, then points to the back of the jeep. “Well, hop on then. Screw the recon. Cowell! On me!” He puts the Jeep in drive as you get in back. The Jeeps speed off, burning rubber and kicking up mud and dirt as they speed down the road. You saw a sign back there.

You’re in Venezia.

The driver of the Jeep leads you on down the street of Venice and towards the Headquarters building. Non-descript, only a few guns covering it. It would look like a regular barracks to anyone else. “General Prich is our commanding officer,” he says. “Tell him what you know, he’s an understanding guy.”

You nod, smiling. “Thank you, Corporal.” He nods then leaves you. The Military Police guarding the door open the door and let you in.

“- and if we continue operations here...” General Prichard and his staff officers look up at you. “Excuse me, who are you?”

“I have information,” you say. “The southern Karlsland resistance needs help, they’re about to be attacked on two fronts by two hives, one of which possesses a captured railway gun. They need reinforcements now.”

General Prichard and the officers look at each other. He says, “And just where did you get this information, young lady?”

The way I was personally seeing it was that her common sense kind of went out the window at that time: Rookie was pretty much one of the few links she had left to sanity during the war, and she wasn't thinking straight and just wanted to get Rookie out of there, which might have worked but then the striker broke down.

And then from there it was kind of a mess of votes from people with different understandings of the situation. Can't really excuse that one.

> “Recon.”

You say, “Recon. I was shot down along with my scouting plane. I kept the intelligence intact however.” You point to your forehead. “All up here.”

One of the staff Lieutenants says, “Sir. It seems consistent with the hives pattern of movement the past few days.” He points down the map. “What with O-7 moving away from its idle position and towards Karlsland. We thought it would just be supporting the Nest in the mountains.”

General Prichard scratches his chin, then looks at you. “And you trust this information?” You nod. “Hm… Alright. Saunders.” A young Captain with blonde hair steps forward. “Alert the men, muster the tanks.” Saunders nods then runs out of the room. “Rest of you, I want all available army units contacted, we need to put together a Joint Task Force.” He points to you, “You. Where’s your Striker?”

You shake your head. “I left it behind in Karlsland. It was a P-39 Airacobra, sir.”

“Alright, follow me. Woolie, come with me.” You, General Prichard, and Lieutenant Woolie walk out of the headquarters. You head onto a Jeep, then head on. “Listen, how soon do you think the attack will happen?”

You shrug. “Tomorrow, we have to assume.”

General Prichard grunts. “It’d take us two or three days just to fight through Roy’s sphere of influence just to get there. And we’ve already closed the air-bridge. Would you be interested in clearing the way for us?”

You nod. “Of course, sir. Just me? What about the 504th?”

“They’re busy,” says General Prichard. “O-3 is trying to come across the Adriatic. They’re forcing it back. You’re the only available Witch for miles now. That means we gotta get you the best thing we can put you in.”

You blink. “What does that mean?”

At the very end, lit up underneath heavy light, is a new pristine Striker Unit. “This one was built as a successor to the Airacobra. Faster, nimble, can regulate magical energy better.”

“Thank you, sir!” You quickly run over to the Striker, kick off your shoes, and then slide your legs in. The Striker Unit whirs as the magical propellers spin to life. He was right, this feels way more comfortable than the Airacobra. Much as you love the Airacobra, this feels lighter, much more powerful, and it feels like you’re using less energy! You hit the armament button, and out of the launcher comes a powerful M2 Browning .50 Caliber Machine gun, the classics.

General Prichard says, “We’ll send in a squadron of fighters after you! Clear the way for our tanks! Everything counts, Sergeant!”

Good thread, despite the explosion over Graf. Though...

> Graf's quite interesting and I do admit I've made a few mistakes in her characterization. We'll see how it goes with her.

I'm going to be honest. Now, I blatantly don't like Graf, so you can take what I'm saying with as much salt as you like, but if there's a character that's as divisive as she's being, where people actively hate her and people support her not because they like her but because they're annoyed by her haters, you MIGHT have a problem with the character, and your usual tactic of letting it blow over isn't actually solving anything, it's just postponing it. It's a bad habit that's gotten you in trouble in the past, like with the Fairless vote way back when.

As an aside, I actually like the idea the other guy put out, and wish you went more that route instead of... whatever the mess Graf is.
