You’re walking through the forest with Moriah and Borislav, and you’re all bundled up to the gills against the cold. He’s been leading you along some trail he knows, and a lot of it has been uphill. You’re accompanied by Reeber. Borya’s transparent spirit wolves are also with you, and they and Reeber seem to be getting along pretty well. They’re pretty much running circles around you, alternating in chasing one another.

Of course you’re going glamorless, and through some friendly cajoling, you’ve got Moriah to join you in the death-face and skull-horns club.

Stress: 13/100
Sanity: 100/100
Bloodlust: Craving

You’re a little distracted. Since Cassandra dropped you and Moriah off today, you haven’t really had much of a chance to get away and kill anything. Your urges aren’t necessarily dangerous yet, but they’re annoying when you just want to hang out. You can gorge yourself on violence later tonight when it won’t bother anybody.

“Beautiful vista is not far now,” Borya says, looking briefly back at Moriah and you. Suddenly the dogs make a beeline for him. He dodges to the side just in time to avoid being trampled, and Reeber charges past hot on the heels of yipping translucent wolves. Reeber in hellhound form is not something you want to be trampled by.
>>

You snicker a little at the sight.

Moriah pushes her hands deeper into the jackets of her big, poofy jacket, seeming to withdraw into herself against the cold. With her coat and scarf and beanie, she kind of resembles a turtle, a little. “It’s already quite beautiful, Borislav,” she says.

“Yeah, what she said,” you say, not really adding anything to the conversation.

Borya beams, still facing the trail ahead. “You can feel spirit of nature all around. It is magic place, do you understand? Life everywhere.”

She glances off to the side, through the branches of the towering redwoods which surround you. “There are a lot of things going on here, Sierra,” she says, thoughtfully.

“See?” you say, laughing. “You’re getting all philosophical and crap. I bet you’re… uh.” You lose your train of thought. Your mouth’s kind of dry, and you can’t help but notice the gnawing emptiness in the pit of your stomach. You stop for a moment to compose yourself, flexing your claws to give your hands something to do. (+5 Stress: 18/100)

Moriah pauses and looks back at you, curious as to why you’ve stopped. “What’s wrong?” she asks, seeing your expression.

You feel uneasy. You know it’s going to go away in a minute, but it doesn’t make it any easier. You lick your teeth, almost grossed out by the taste. You shudder and force the issue out of your mind. (+5 Stress: 23/100)

You can feel the worry coming from Moriah, even with your eyes closed. You make yourself look at her and smile. It’s hard, but you can feel your focus coming back. “I’m good. Just… you know,” you say, rolling your shoulders. You walk around Moriah to catch up to Borislav.

The question becomes how many points do we need to put into belph powers before we can satisfy ourself using other bodily fluids?
>>
You skirt around the issue. “I’ve just got some things I’m dealing with,” you say. You still feel the compelling desire within yourself to cause pain, and though you finally get a handle on it and banish it into the dark recesses of your mind, you know it’s not really gone. You’ll have to really deal with it sooner or later, and you figure sooner is better. You drift away from Borislav and Moriah.

“I’m… I’ll meet up with you later,” you say, heading off. “Borya, go show Moriah the spirit tree. She’d probably like that.”

Borislav nods. “Good luck,” he says.

Moriah is obviously unsatisfied with your explanation, or lack thereof, but she doesn’t pry.

“This way, come, come!” Borya says, leading Moriah away.

Once you’re out of sight, you take off, summoning your imp to help you locate something to maim.

--

Awhile later, when the sun has already begun its downward descent, you continue your search for Moriah and Borislav. You rely on your summons to do most of the searching for you, since the shalbaan has a much better nose than you do.

Stress: 2/100
Sanity: 97/100
Bloodlust: Satiated

Eventually though you don’t find them so much as Reeber finds you.

“Hey boy,” you say, kneeling to give the ferocious hellhound a big hug when he comes bounding up to you. You do your best to avoid his tongue, but he’s very friendly and very big. “You know where the guys are?” you ask him.
>>
>>34458474

Reeber barks roughly in answer, and then turns tail and runs off for you to follow, which you do.

A minute later you come into a picturesque glade. Borislav stands in the center of the clearing. He hums to himself and makes a slow, rhythmic motion with his hands. The surrounding ferns seem to wave with him, responding to his movements as if somehow connected.

Moriah stands nearby, focusing her attention especially on one such plant. It’s small and comes up about to her knee. She stares at it and mutters darkly to herself. She replicates Borislav’s movements, but hers are less fluid and lack the softness of the druid’s. The fern before her doesn’t so much as sway with her motions as it does tremble.

A number of birds and small animals ring the glade, as if playing spectator to the scene.

“Heyo!” you say, walking over.

Moriah glances suddenly in your direction. “Hello, Sierra,” she says, briefly smiling. “Are you feeling better?”

But when she turns her direction away from the fern, its trembling ceases, and the color drains from its leaves. It blackens, dries up, and curls in on itself, root, stem, and leaf withering together.
>>
>>34458486

The birdsong that fills the clearing ends, and all of the creatures turn tail and flee.

“Uzhas,” Borislav says, breaking out of his plant-dance and waving at Moriah. “Stop!”

Moriah notices what’s happening, and takes a quick step backward. It’s too late for the fern, though. It’s left a brittle skeleton of its former liveliness. Curiously, she reaches out and touches a branch, as if hoping it might turn green again. Instead, though, it falls off. Pieces break off of it when it hits the ground. She gives the dead plant a flat look.

Borislav chuckles at the scene, clearly enjoying himself.

“That was awesome,” you say, walking over to Moriah’s side. Making something wither and die pretty impressive, even if it wasn’t what she meant to do. “So. This is just a wild guess, but I’m guessing that’s why you wear gloves all the time.”

She examines her current gloves, which have black roses patterned on them. “I like wearing gloves,” she says quietly.

“This kind of thing happen a lot?” you ask.

“No. I’m good at avoiding situations where it could,” she replies. Then she asks a question of her own. “Where did you go?”

“It’s complicated,” you reply. “Sorry for running off like that, though. I mean. It just kind of turned out that way. Was Borya showing you the ropes?”

“She is very good learner,” Borislav provides, sitting down on a stump and withdrawing an apple from his pocket. He gets out a knife and starts cutting pieces off to eat. “Much better than you, dyevushka,” he adds, giving you a sly look.

“Yeah whatever,” you say, ignoring him and his silly jabs. “So, is it harder than it looks?”
>>
>>34459244

Moriah puts her hands back in her pockets, and looks over at the druid. “Everything he does looks easy until you try to do it yourself,” she says, her expression showing equal parts excitement and frustration. “I haven’t looked into natural magic and druidism before now. It’s given me a lot to think about, even if it is a field I’m never going to excel in.” She gives a pointed look at the dead fern.

“If you really wanted to talk to trees you could figure it out,” you say, having a seat on a nearby fallen tree. “You’re smart and stuff, sure, but you can’t expect to be good at everything the second you try it out.”

“I know. With enough effort I could probably do most of what Borislav can,” says Moriah. “I just don’t know if it’s worth it when I can spend my time elsewhere.”

“Oh come on,” you say. “Everyone has to get out of their comfort zone for something.” You look for someone to back you up, and since Borya’s the only one there, you turn to him. “Borislav, what do you think? Could Moriah have the spark of the wild or what?”

Borya pops an apple slice into his mouth. “Hmm,” he says, screwing up his face in thought. But he just isn’t seeing it. “Voobshe… nyet,” he says, shaking his head.

You groan. “You’re the worst,” you say.

“You ask question, I tell answer,” he says, shrugging. “I am honest man.”

“Well… honesty sucks,” you reply.

He laughs at you, and you glare at him.

Moriah doesn’t join in. “It’s not his fault,” she says. “I have limits, and I acknowledge them.”

You look at Moriah, skull-faced with her hair pulled back into a pony tail, with her neat black rosed gloves and puffy gray jacket. There’s nothing about her that seems extraordinary, except for the fact she happens to be a Hellion with death powers.

Moriah doesn’t answer immediately. She instead conjures a ghostly tendril of light, and slowly weaves it around her fingers like a piece of string. “Not very hard,” she says, watching the pale light. “So long as I’m alone I don’t have any reason to worry. There aren’t many people who like being around me, either, so that makes things simpler.” She looks over at you, allowing her magic to dissipate. “Sometimes I wish I could be a more like you, though,” she says. “You make it look easy.”

You feel dishonest, somehow. (+2 Stress: 4/100) “I uh. I don’t know about that,” you say, kind of to her, but kind of to yourself.

“Don’t be like that,” Moriah chides. “You always… everyone likes you. And you’re so… you’re so at ease with whatever you do. You’re good at everything. The things you’re not good at are because you don’t care,” she tells you plainly. "The only thing you can't do is take a compliment."

You had no idea that Moriah has such a high opinion of you. You’re not sure you want that.

Honestly, as much as I'd like to tell her, I don't think it's the best time. I'd also like to know why Mr.Crowther didn't tell the truth about those people and how it was Sierra who killed them.

He probably didn't say shit for Sierra's sake but still...

And it's not even normal one's, apparently. According to Ranthix, they're like weird more-violent-than-normal ones. Hell, I put Ro in the hospital once and I don't even remember doing it."

Because I don't want to tell her? Why should we. it might just raise question we don't want to answer. I think the whole need-to-kill-things-and-cause-pain is plenty enough, it's not like she confessed her biggest secret to us. We already knew she had death powers, now we know she can keep it under control and it's easier when alone.

Moriah’s wrong. She thinks you’re something you’re not. And while you are cool, and you are awesome virtually all the time without exceptions, there are exceptions. Everything about you – who you are and everything – sometimes, it wears thin. “All of that stuff,” you say, not sure what you’re saying, “it’s not… I mean. Sometimes it’s a show, you know? I mean. Who I am right now – if you met me just like, a few months ago? There’s some… things I have to be really careful about,” you say.

Moriah waits for you to continue, still not seeing exactly what you’re getting at. But what are you getting at, even?

“Just earlier today, you know?” you say, drawing on the most ready example. “I was getting fidgety because I had to go kill something. I was putting it off and it just… I slipped up a little. If I don’t hurt something every once in a while, I start freaking out.”

“But… you don’t have enough Infernus in you to get blood rages,” Moriah says, doubtfully. You can taste the confusion on her.

“They’re not normal blood rages,” you say. “According to Ranthix they’re more violent than normal ones. I mean. This one time I put Rowan in a hospital,” and killed a guy “and, you know, I don’t even remember doing it?” You focus on the clovers at your feet. You still haven’t found one with four leaves, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to stop looking any time soon.
>>
>>34462119

“I think it’s to do with me being part Verwelken,” you say. “I’m told it’s pretty much a miracle I don’t just blow up at any second.”

Moriah has enough pieces to get a picture out of it. “So you come up here all the time to deal with it,” she says.

“Better here than there,” you say, suppressing a shiver. Thoughts and images come unbidden to your mind. Horrible things. (-2 Sanity: 95/100) (+4 Stress: 8/100) “It… it used to be worse but I’ve been good lately,” you say. “The Hallows are nice and I’ve got friends and stuff, so.”

That gives Moriah something to think about for a minute. When she speaks, her voice carries a note of question. “How long have you been having blood rages?” she asks.

“Pretty much since I was a kid,” you answer. “It’s mostly if I just get overstressed or angry or something. The killing things is a more recent thing. “

Your answer illicits a kind of unexpected reaction in Moriah. She looks at you carefully, and steps closer. “How old were you when they started?” she asks.

“I don’t know,” you answer, leaning a little away from her. “About eight or something?”

She gives you a kind of frowning expression, even though she doesn’t have lips to frown with. “That’s really young,” she says slowly. “Strong demonic traits like that don’t manifest before puberty in down-the-middle hellborn.”
>>
>>34462149

“What?” you ask, squinting at her.

“It’s just a guess, but I think you’re a little more than half demon,” Moriah tells you. “Nobody ever recorded Corithis possessing Verwelken magic. It makes the story simpler if your Verwelken blood came from somewhere else.”

You stare at her for a second, trying to understand what she’s saying.

I'm guessing it's a combination of us not having too much Verwelken blood, not being made out of shadows, and our Infernus heritage mitigating some of the weakness to sun.

If I remember correctly Issac said that usually Verwelken traits are recessive so a half-human half-Verwelken would be prone to insanity, but might not be that vulnerable to the sun.

I think our Mom was going for some serious eugenics here. Get some Infernus blood and Verwelken blood in the same body so they force everything to compete for predomination, using Belphegoran and Human to round out the mix and keep us from literally exploding. Landmaster came from either one of our parents, not sure which. We might not be the most powerful demon around yet, but we have a lot of versatility, can claim Landwells, and have a lot of longterm potential. And we're immortal, so if we manage to live long enough we'll be one of the most badass Demons around.

Mom had demon powers that let her conceive a child with multiple fathers maybe.

She tried for more, but only got the current 3 demon + Landmaster mix

[VE] is goes dormant (but still gives insanity) when paired with any non-[IN] demon. When paired with [IN], both try to go dominant and power boost continually until the body gives out and explodes.

[VE] hellborn still get shadow magic and they still die to the sun.
>>
>>34462677
>not being made out of shadows
Technically, Sierra is partially made of shadows now. The shadow self is like an organ or something.
