You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

Thirty, twenty-nine, twenty-eight, twenty-seven…

The Scar stretches out around you. You’re counting down from thirty, and when you’re done, you’re going to start running. Those are the rules.

…twenty-two, twenty-one, twenty, nineteen…

You go through your priorities. You have Laura, who has special assassin training or something. There’s Noriko, whose powers are wild and generally uncoordinated, but who strikes you as the truest survivor of the group. Kevin, with the ability to make doors and windows on a dime. Gaby, teleporter. Lucas, whose powers you don’t fully understand. And Layla, the runt of the litter with the ability to multiply erratically.

You have to catch at least one, or you are officially shit. So which one do you go after first?

…six, five, four, three, two–

Then its after Kevin, then lucas, then noriko then laura then gabby.
But most likely what ever is conveniant at the time. Need Layla first though or her clones will leave a trillion scent trails.

We have to get her early, or she'll be lost in the- AS a crowd.
>>
Actually, changing my vote to
>[x] Gaby’s teleportation makes her a priority.
She will be much harder to find later on thanks to her trail getting cold.
>>
>>34463277
Kevin will be the third hardest. He doesn't leave much of a scent, on account of any organic substance decaying around him.

Maybe we can follow the decay, but he's a walking sterilizer.
>>
>[X] Layla

Layla is literally a one-adolescent crowd. You really don’t know how her power works, whether it’s biological or… quantum or something… but she doesn’t seem to have a ‘numero uno’ body anymore – if there’s one Layla still running it doesn’t matter how many of them you catch.

So that pretty much has to be nipped in the bud.

Breathing deep, you catch her scent – sweaters and shampoo, old socks, baked beans – and set out.

2nd is Gaby before she ports everywhere and her scent goes cold
Kevin, Lucas, and Noriko should be easy to track down

Sure.

Kevin - Be invisible and throw shit at him to immobilize before touching jacket.

Noriko - Same

Lucas - Invisible and grapple

Reminder that getting Claws and Fangs to Rank 2 unlocked some neat extrapolatives, including the ability to get (retractable) horns and (more interestingly) extendable, prehensile arm blades. Folks might want to take a look between Crusty posts just to see what's available.

>>34463638

That sounds like a good plan to me, though saving Laura for last is probably going to mean we're gonna have to make some crazy good rolls in order to catch her.

You move fast over the snow, bounding through the skeletonized remains of inner-city infrastructure will little difficulty. It soon strikes you that you know this route – Layla seems to be headed to the old garbage tip further into the Scar. Hoping the months of unattended waste will throw off your nose, maybe, or just going to familiar ground.

It doesn’t take long for you to catch up with her. For all her adolescent energy, she’s not exactly Speedy Gonzales. You trace her scent up the side of a skewed, half-buried apartment complex, invisible and mostly inaudible, palms adhered as if by Van der Waals forces to the worn brickwork.

She’s breathing heavily inside.

You strike.

The window-frame rushes by you as you burst into the apartment, becoming visible in mid-flight, and you cannot describe how satisfying the look of terror on Layla’s face is before you hoist her up off the ground.

“Gah!” She screams and kicks, and another her flickers into existence, running away at full acceleration. The Layla in your arms blows raspberries in your face before dematerializing, leaving you with an armful of suddenly empty air.

Hmmm.
>>
>>34463854

Save power shit till the thread is done.
>>
>(2/2)

You give chase. Kinda interesting that she’s not darting in all directions – maybe she’s too tired. Still, you can’t catch her as long as she can replicate.

As she reaches the stairs, the wall beside her blasted out into a vista of the scar’s jagged horizon, an idea strikes you. Putting on a burst of speed, you over take her instantly, grabbing the back of her sweater. You feel her tense up - she's gonna pound the ground, build up some energy for multiplication.

And then you jump straight out of the building.

“Oh crap oh crap oh cra”–

The snow down below softens your fall, but Layla doesn’t reach the ground with you. Putting that newfound dexterity of yours to use, you snag her sweater on one of the floorboards that jut out across the ruined side of the building.

She sways there, eyes screwed up, until she realizes she’s not headed toward the ground. You practically feel the surge of relief ebb and vanish when she opens her eyes.

“Holy, holy…” Her voice trails off into a hiss. “Y-you win, okay? Get me down!”

“Is that an official declaration of surrender?” You call up to her, grinning crookedly. You’re enjoying this possibly a bit too much.

She nods frantically, eying the drop. You guess it probably seems higher from up there. Or when you’re a tiny little person.

You scarper up the side of the building, unhooking her with a free hand. She latches on to you immediately, burying her head in your shoulder, and you feel a very (very) small pang of guilt. She’s so good at being a butt, you sometimes forget that Layla’s actually just a kid, really.

You climb down rather than leap off, mostly for Layla’s benefit.

“You okay?”

She nods

“Good.”

You consider your next move.

More meant something along the lines of agility, but meant for...you know how when you practice with something for a long time, you can almost feel when and where something touches it like it was a part of your body?

An extrapolative that makes that level of control (nearly)instantaneous
>>
>>34464330
That would be the task master powers essentially.
While it allows copying of moves, it also gives an intrinsic understanding of your body's positioning and abilitys in order to do that.
>>
>[X] Gaby.

Well, Gaby’s already demonstrated the ability to give you whole heaps of trouble, and not just the traumatic family kind either. So you guess she’s next.

“You wanna let go?” You ask Layla, who is presently doing her best to imitate a barnacle. She shakes her head.

Ah.

Okay then.

“Alrighty.” That’s cool, you’re good. She’s pretty light. You’ll figure it out. “How about we go get Gaby, then she can go back to the station with you. That sound good?”

There is a brief, thoughtful silence, and then she nods again.

“Okay then, up we go…” Coaxing her loose, you shrug off your jacket and wrap it around your waist before letting Layla back up onto your back. Gaby’s scent is kinda distant – unsurprisingly, she’s put quite a bit of ground between you and her. “Hold on tight, okay?”

She mumbles a “Yeah”, and you let your arms distend, fingers warping into wingspan, skin stretching into membrane. You push off against the ground and take flight. You feel Layla’s heart pound in her chest, and her knuckles whiten around your shoulders.

You follow the smell of freshly shampooed fur all the way out to the edge of the scar, where the buildings are a little less decimated. As luck would have it, you spot Gaby moving across open ground – and she’s not alone. Kevin’s with her. You smile to yourself. Kevin’s hard to track, so that’s a spot of good luck right there.

They pause, and Gaby points up at you. A short dialogue passes between the two and they split in opposite directions.

We know he has seen us, so I'd guess we expect him to resist. Invis should help us out here, provided Layla keeps quiet.
If we don't go after him now, Gaby will lead us quite some distance away and we'll have a hard time finding him again
>>
>>34464717
Yeah, but smells are more than than skin-bacteria. Like a lot more.
>>
>>34464699
Sorta. It eats the dead skin, bacteria, dust, grime, sweat, and pretty much anything that makes smells.
>>
>>34464770
So basically what we're smelling is the stuff he's carrying.
>>
>[X] Actually this is a good opportunity to catch Kevin.

“Okay, Layla, slight change of plans…”

“Wait, what’re you”–

You veer off in Kevin’s direction, plunging straight down through the sky, the wind rattling in your ears. Layla screams, but it’s not a bad scream – you can smell the adrenaline colouring her blood, heart pounding, lungs opening up like floodgates. You guess you’re a pretty okay rollercoaster.

Kevin pretty much didn’t stand a chance. Inside, he’d be a nightmare, every wall essentially a door to be opened by him, but on open ground it’s a different story. His legs pound valiantly through the snow but your descent is just too fast – you swoop in and adhere the back of his jacket straight to the soles of your boots, a shocked cry bubbling up in his throat as you lift him off the ground.

“Gotcha.”

“Whoa, whoa, haha, okay dude…” He puts his hands up in surrender, grinning up at you. “Just make sure not to go skin-to-skin there…”

You smile back down at him and drop altitude, letting that fuzzy, electric-y adhesion stuff fizzle out. He hits the ground running.

Also more biodermal, maybe when we get the option of new tier 1 powers we can reinforce it with light armour.
Subdermal and Scaly armour would stack, right Crusty?

“Cshrrk.” You put on the most nasally, this-is-your-captain-speaking voice you can manage without the assistance of your hands, twisting about in the air to veer off in Gaby’s direction. “Alright folks, after that slight detour Lizard Air is back on course…”

“You are so lame…” Shouts Layla, straining to raise her voice above the wind. She still laughs a little, though.

You swoop in on Gaby and find yourself hitting an expanding cloud of broken, distorted space, the air around you crackling with latent electricity. You shoot straight through it and adjust your vision into the thermal range, scanning the nearby horizon for hotspots.

Windows, windows, blue, grey, little streaks of tentative green – there! You see a blotch of bright, fiery orange warmth explode into being amidst the shell of an old factory.

You close in, swooping in through the shattered roof. Down below, amidst the remains of the machines, a surprisingly not-so-surprised Gaby glances up at you, bursting into motion across the factory floor, her loping stride easily cutting through the mishmash of broken apparatuses. You can’t help but notice that she lowers herself onto all four limbs when pressured for speed – and it helps, apparently, the diminutive girl seeming to move in a long, slick blur, her tail swaying frantically behind, keeping her balanced.

She vanishes again, popping back into existence further along the structure, where the dense machinery is probably in particularly in favour of flight. Descending to one of the remaining walkways, you gnarl your wings back up into arms and head off after her, reaching the end of the factory – not the exit, the end, it just cuts out into rubble and sky – just in time to see her take another jump.

>(2/3)

Hmmm.

You sniff for that greasy, ozone smell she leaves behind. She’s down below, in the rubble – right below, you actually.

You leap, Layla tightening her grip on your back, and catch a stray length of rebar, using it to turn on a dime and propel you back into the ruins below. You catch a glimpse of Gaby’s eyes – that familiar, blue-green coalescence – blinking in the dark, focusing on you, and you realize you’re close enough to smell the sweat running under her fur.

Another shower of bright, electrical sparks and she’s gone – behind you. Not far this time, either. Must be getting tired.

The breath rattles in your lungs as you pursue. She’s heading out into the light, into the open streets. You’re better across this terrain, though, the distance between you closing quickly. She’ll jump in a moment. She’ll –
>>

>I'd honestly nearly forgotten about Geointuitive Vision until now

Something strewn through the rubble catches your attention. A long, rusted iron chain, discarded in the ruins. Your brain is immediately plotting courses and extrapolating distances.

You feel the static build along Gaby’s shoulders – you’re close enough to taste it. The sparks fly. You reach out, the metal cold against your palms, and concentrate. Listening, tasting, stretching your awareness, anticipating the flash of electrical heat, the greasy scent of teleportation. She vanishes, space furling inwards unnaturally in her wake, and…

Above. Back the way you came. She’s doubling back. Tricking you.

You spin on your heels, whipping the chain around in your grasp. Gaby appears in mid-air, above one of the tumbled, discard machines, the tunnel of careening, strange light warping the air around her, and you feel your brain explode into torrents of information – ups, downs, adjustments, vectors. You adjust the turn of your wrist very slightly, and the chain coils straight around her ankle.

“Ack!”

You pull.

Gaby rushes through the air toward you. She explodes into blistering, electrical nothing for a moment, before popping back out into reality on the exact same vector. You lower your knees in preparation, taking a deep breath, before she slams into you, sending you sliding across the back of your heels.

Your arms put her in a big scaly vice.

You’d say that qualifies as caught.

>[X] Lucas.

“Hey, Gaby.” You breathe out heavily, feeling your shoulder curl inwards in protest. That chase took a lot out of you.

Gaby blinks, her expression thoroughly stunned, and glances across the rubble.

“Um… what, uh, just happened…?”

You lift the chain in one hand, metal links chirping off one another. You notice that one end has been violently, abruptly severed from reality, the entire length attached to Gaby apparently lose somewhere in the folds between space. What remains in your hand trails away into a very, very hot – like, white hot – mess.

“Oh…” She looks down at her leg, as though she can still feel the touch of the metal.

“You alright?”

“Ah, yes, I am fine.” She rolls her shoulders, as if getting a feel for herself, and smiles her tentative little smile. Her eyes widen a bit as she glances over you. “Is that… Layla… on your back?”

“Yeah. Speaking of…” You poke an elbow up under Layla’s ribs. “Time to get off. I got scrubs to catch.”

“Nah, ack”– She squirms, pulling herself away from the intruding limb. “I’m good.”

Argh.

“Look, kid,” You ease yourself down onto the rubble, your legs groaning. “The ride is officially over. Either you get off or I’m going nowhere.”

No response.

“Do I have to zap you off?”

“You wouldn’t dare.” She grins in your ear, laughing quietly.

“Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…” You rev up the sound of – what you assume is kinda the sound of, at least – an electrical generator chugging along into activity. “…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…”

“You won’t.” She insists, stubbornly, her grip tightening.

“…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…” You allow a brief flicker of static to play along your fingertips, and suddenly Layla’s apparently not so sure, because she’s off you in a flash. You bolt to your feet before she can reconsider, and pull… a face. Some kind of grin possibly, or a contortion somewhere in that area – a sort of twisted, evil approximation, fuelled by the special kind of mirth that can only by mined from the detriment of others.

“This moron.” You point a pair of finger-guns in Layla direction. “Truly hilarious.”

She glares daggers.

“Anyway, mind taking her home?” Shifting your tone back to normal, and hopefully your expression to, you turn to Gaby. Kinda good that it turned out this way, really – you know Gaby’d rather be hanging out with Layla than doing any of this stuff.

“Of course.” She beams down at Layla. Yep, that put some chipper in her step. “Want to ride on my back?”

Layla’s decision is a split-second one. “Yeeeeeep! Your fur is super soft.”

“Oh, um, well…” Gaby seems to wrestle with the idea of that being a compliment for a second, before finally giving in. “…Thank you, Layla.”

They head out into the snow, leaving you to your hunt.

Lucas next. You don’t really get his powers but you suspect that they give him a big ole’ speed advantage.

You take a step toward the street and feel your legs wobble tenuously underneath you, a sudden, sickly sort of weight settling in your stomach, seeming to pitch you just very slightly askew. You didn’t realize how tired you were till you stopped.

Maybe you should take a brief rest. Or not. You don’t know how long you can keep this up, but you don’t know how much ground the others have put between you either.

We don't run at super-human speed, though.
We parkour like crazy and are probably close to upper human speed capability, but we're not Pietro or anything.

I'm expecting Crusty to pass out like he's Diarca any moment now.
>>
>>34467170
It's kind of stupid, though.

JJ does the "running" thing with that enchanced mutie strength he has, and already did some Jump Good before; no idea why he can't use that strength to run a bit faster.
>>
>>34467170
You can't become stronger without becoming faster though.
If you hit harder, that means you also hit faster.
>>
>>34467252
He can though, just like Captain America, Hulk, Spiderman and anybody else with any degree of enhanced strenght can.
>>
>>34467170
Not that anon, but I recall Str giving a bonus to speed (and jumping capability as well) because of lower body strength and Agility has mostly been acrobatic maneuvering or manual dexterity (for what we've used it for).
And we currently have Longshot's level of agility and I just downloaded a comic of his to see what that actually means, as every wiki has said "He's got agility, yep. Hollow bones an' shit".
>>
>>34467262
Not true. That boils down to a lot of physics stuff with mass and weight and so forth. Speed is just one factor you can increase, but lets not go there.
>>
>>34467251

He said he'd sleep tomorrow, so I guess double issue, maybe.
>>
>>34467262
>If you hit harder, that means you also hit faster.
No it doesn't.

Speed and force are not the same thing. A professional boxer could punch someone with the same speed as a 90 lb professional gymnast punching someone. The Boxer hits harder because he's putting more force into it.
>>
>>34467306
Crusty has said in the past that Strength only gives a very slight increase to speed. They're supposed to be different things.
>>
>>34467332
You and I wish pal. Crusty is man of much resolve, but even he has his limits.
>>
>>34467173
>It does not even require super speed to throw someone off
Obviously, but she'd have a chance at becoming paste or getting hurt bad by going from super fast to nil too quickly, added on to the chance of failing from JJ while flying or falling and landing wrong while JJ is doing acrobatics/parkour.
>this argument is pointless
Wouldn't call it pointless more like unnecessary.
>>
>[X] Keep going

Your breath bubbles in your lungs. Starting to feel like soup in there.

But this is supposed to be a challenge, right? For some reason you feel as though you’d be backing down somehow if you stopped for a breather – which isn’t really all that alien to you, to be honest. You back down all the time. Running away is basically your special move. But here it doesn’t seem right; you have this awful sort of feeling that you’d be disappointing someone, even if you’re not at all sure who.

You drag yourself up and take flight. You let the wind carry you when it can, trying your best to catch as much sun as possible. You don’t know what it is, but over the last few days, just being out in the light of day has made you feel really… alive. Not in the usual way, neither. It’s like it fills you with this energy – this heat.

Maybe you’re like a plant now. Photosyncratic or photosynthetic or whatever.

Nah. That’s too silly, even for your jumbled-up genes.

You stay low, swooping down ever so often to taste the air. You see a few figures you don’t recognize moving through the scar, hobbling along below like ants. One or two of them glance up at you – girl with red scales and horns, big yellow eyes glowing like torches in her skull (bet she’d be a hit with Gaby, huh?), some bald kid with weird, sorta-grey skin, a few others. They’re everywhere now, aren’t they?

Eventually you catch a hint of Lucas’ scent, following the trail back to the skeleton of a busted-up apartment building – fancy place, back in its day, all classical architecture and stuff. Now it’s just rebar and concrete, a lots and lots of broken glass. You slide your vision along the thermal spectrum and his silhouette – skinny and mad with heat – immediately cuts through the architecture. He’s a few floors up, some way aways from any conceivable way in.

Smart.

To a certain extent, but not to his level. >bloody hell guys

You flip the invisibility button at the base of your brain, fading into the background, and try your best for a quiet approach.

Your best is pretty good.

The wind hisses under your wingspan, but you manage to make the descent without having to beat your limbs against the sky, gliding in to grab a hold of the ruined architecture. You let your bones spring back into their natural shapes, wings returning to arms, and swing your way in under a tangle of loosed rebar, landing with nary a sound.

Well, not nary a sound, really. There was definitely a little ‘whump’ there. But if invisibility has taught you anything, it’s how ridiculously inattentive people are to what they can’t see.

You stalk your way along the remains of a corridor, ducking under a thoroughly offset pillar, and follow Lucas’ scent into what was once an apartment. Two apartments, actually – the walls are collapsed all the way through to the other end of the building, where a huge, ash-scarred breach yawns out into sky.

CRACK!

You pause, holding your breath, before realizing that the sound didn’t come from you. You glance to your side, and behold Lucas’ skinny frame. He’s frowning deeply, his glare directed, almost disapprovingly, down at his own hands. Thin beads of dark red blood drip from his knuckles.

What.

He rolls his shoulders, breathing in, and slams his fist into the nearby wall. You hear the smack of wet flesh on stone, and smell fresh blood rushing to the surface.

“Dude.” It just comes out. “What the hell are you doing?”

>>34468783
Most people are getting it as a requisite for Muscle Memory, not for the power itself, though this may come in handy at the meeting.
>>
>>34468783

Autonomic Sequencing isn't the real goal. The real goal is Muscle Memory.

>ENHANCED MUSCLE MEMORY
>Requires: Level 4 Enhanced Agility, Level 4 Enhanced Senses, Autonomic Sequencing
>Cost: 3
>JJ’s rate of learning when it comes to physical action skyrockets. He does not immediately perfect an action after observing it, but his muscles retain certain reflexes far more efficiently and his ability to extrapolate how an action is performed in sequence with others (unlike Autonomic Sequencing, which simply stores and repeats one action) is heightened to superhuman levels.

Muscle Memory is not as limited as Autonomic Sequencing. It doesn't just help JJ copy a movement/action/process exactly, it helps him extrapolate how to do it, which in turn lets him use it in circumstances other than the one he witnessed the copied movements in.

I swear to fucking god Carlos, one of these days.
>>
>>34468817

I also really want to get;

>ENHANCED KINESICS
>Requires: Requires: Level 4 Enhanced Agility, Level 4 Enhanced Senses
>Cost: 3
>JJ’s senses become attuned to the fine details of human locomotion. He becomes capable of accurately predicting a person’s mood and immediate actions based on the subtle flexes and tensions of their physiology. In some cases this ability can reveal more than just mood, and stops just short of reading another person’s mind.

Not only does this mesh pretty naturally with Muscle Memory, but it would go a long way towards helping JJ become better at reading people. Presumably even people like Laura who are pretty good at keeping themselves composed (trigger scent notwithstanding).
