"There was another demon incursion. All of our knights were ordered to hold up in the castle until a hero arrived. I'm the fastest out of the entire Royal Guard, so I was told to go find one, and you're the only one that I know of." The green haired knight rests her head on the table as a sign of her exhaustion.

"We're going," Camille leaps from her chair, without a second thought. "Fritelli, we're going to borrow your-"
"Hold it, Lass. Where are we going?" You grab your weapons, strapping them to yourself.
"Galette, to fight monsters. You're a hero, so you're better at fighting monsters than I am, and I'm the Demon Hunter, so I need to go investigate. Sound like a fair trade? Yes? Let's go."

You are Jack Albator, stunning mariner, deceitful outlaw, and now Demon Hunter in training. Your first training exercise as a demon hunter is similar to how you first learned to swim, by getting thrown overboard.
You can swim like a dolphin now, so maybe there's merit to this method of education.

There is one condition that you want to be clear on,

"Hold it, if Aye'm central to this hunting party, then I choose who we bring along. And two people doesn't sound like a hunting party for me."

Camille sighs impatiently, "Fine. Who do you want to bring along?"

You look up at Camille, "I'll be takin... you of course, and"
Scanning the room, you pick out the people who have shown some combat prowess.
"Fritelli and Aligot." you're fairly certain you just heard Aligot swear under his breath.

"Go get us a couple of ostriches or whatever to ride. I'm going to go add one more to our crew. We'll meet at the stables in ten minutes."
"Then where are you going, Jack?" Camille seems worried that you'll try to skip out.

"Me? Har, I'm going to go get the only other hero in the castle, of course."
"..Don't start a war, Jack."
"No promises, Lass." You round the corner and dash toward the stairwell.

After getting directions from Alicot, you breeze up the stairs with minimal effort and soon find yourself in front of the guest bedrooms.

Third door on the right, has a bunny engraved on the intricate woodwork. This is probably the place.

"Knock knock, Princess, Hero, we need to have a chat."
There's some stirring inside, the sound of someone shuffling off a bed and setting something down at the desk. Light footsteps approach the wooden door.
Then nothing happens, but you can still hear the light sound of breathing behind it.

"Knock Knock, important hero business is afoot."
"...Jack, why are you here?"
That voice is clearly Yuuki, but you still hear no one else in the room except for her.

"Because the time has come, Lass! We're off to do important hero business and I think you should come along."
"But-"

She shuffles around some inside.

"Annetta was summoned by the court to attend to some foreign political matters. She asked me to stay in the room until she got back."
"And?"
"And.. I was thinking about what you were saying earlier about being her hero."

She pauses for a few moments.

"You were right, Jack. I would do anything to protect her."
She slowly continues, "But at the same, she has been the most caring person I have ever met. She promised that I would never have to see the darker sides of this world. I don't want to make her think that she broke her own promise."

"Lass, you want to protect your princess and 'er feelings, that's a noble thing to want." Is 'noble' the right word? You continue,
"But here in a couple a weeks you're going back to your own country where it's just you and her. The reason I'm being called out right now instead of resting easy is because there's something that only I, the hero, can do."

You take out your flask and have a drink, you've always been better at these talks this way.

"And there's going to come a time where you won't be able to run from who you are without her getting hurt. Wouldn't ye rather find out about the dark things in this world while there's other people who can help you?"
Yeuck, that left a sour taste in your mouth. You're pretty sure if any of your former crew heard you say something like that, then you would have gotten a thump.

"..Even if you're right, Jack. I don't even know where to start with that. I can't just tell her that I want to be her vanguard in this world while she still struggles to shelter me from it."

You laugh, "That's the easiest part! First what you do, is you grab this doorknob, turn it, and step out of these boundaries that she's set for you."
Your hand grabs the doorhandle, pulling the whole door open.
"Like this!"

That's when you realize that there was probably a reason that she didn't open the door for you herself.

She clutches close to her chest the now-untied blanket wrapping that she normally wears. You slowly close the door back to it's standard position.

"...Then you go get dressed and meet us down at the stables in a few minutes. That sound like a plan, Lass?"
"Y-yes, I'll be there shortly."

That could have gone better, but at least it happened! Or that's what you tell yourself. You make sure to get a few essentials before heading toward the stables.

You walk toward the stables where Camille and the others are standing. Now armed with that nice wheelgun and a full flask for the road. You adjust your hat to compensate for the now-setting sun.

The others struggle and tug at the birds. Some of the knights offer to go, but Fritelli tells them to stay here for the time being.

Camille is the first one who notices you, "Hey Jack! How did it go?"
"It went-"
'Better than you anticipated'? No that seems a little wrong.
"Fine."

"Great! Is she coming with us?"
"Yar, she'll be out in a moment."

A few minutes of checking gear and supplies pass until a familiar black-haired girl clutching a pointed polearm approaches the stables.

"Ah! Yuuki!" Fritelli runs to greet her. "Are we ready to go?"
"..Yes." She looks toward you and blushes slightly before handing her polearm off to be safely packed onto the bird.

You don't see what the big deal is. It's not like you haven't seen partially clothed women before. The only difference here is that she was aware of you seeing her.

Fritelli turns to you, "Jack! Are we set? Anything else?"

>Anything?

Your party sets off toward Gallete. If Fritelli is accurate, it should be dark by the time all of you get there.

"Okay, Camille, you talked to the knight some more. What do they know about what we're fighting?"
"One Demon, not very large but no one wanted to take their chances fighting it. They probably could have just sent you and it would have been okay."

"Whar?! Then why are all of us going?"
"Hey, you were the one who wanted a big party to fight this thing. Not me."
She has you there.

About an hour of talking goes by as the sun continues to dip below the horizon.

"-And maybe it's just as well, it's good if your first monster is something small and manageable." Camille concludes, "Both you and Yuuki need to start somewhere."

She turns to you, "By the way, we just set foot in Gallete territory, so it shouldn't be much longer."

"You didn't tell me the real reason you came back to Biscotti, Camille." Fritelli interrupts, "You said you had some other business to attend to besides the airship?"
Camille's tail is assaulting your nose again, you knock it out of the way.

She sighs, "There's a personal reason, and it's why I'm going on this trip with Jack even though he could handle it alone. Do you remember the attack that happened to that village a few weeks ago?"

Fritelli looks and you and Yuuki, "Right, our heroes here don't know what you're talking about, so why don't you start from the top?"

Camille adjusts her voice, "Several months back, we started seeing monsters tread closer and closer to villages. We didn't think anything of it because the guard and the village warriors always kept them at bay beforehand. Then this attack happened, and it was the tipping point that made every nation want their own hero."

She waves her tail around again, you restrain it firmly in hand.
Yuuki seems worried, "So that one attack is the whole reason I'm here?"
"One of the reasons, it was the largest of its type. When it happened, I was in the area at the time and went in to investigate. Usually these kinds of attacks leave evidence of fighting, or residue from souls that had been taken to heaven. When I got there-"

Her whole body shifts toward Yuuki and Fritelli, "I didn't find anything."
Yuuki and Fritelli seem confused, "What do you mean? Were you searching for people?"
"No! I was searching for any kind of sign that a fight even took place there. I didn't find one. The buildings were perfectly intact, the ground still had fresh footprints of humans and only humans, and the weapons people were still in their lockers. I told the royal authority my findings, and they laughed at me!"

"So you.. think they're hiding something?"
"I don't know what to think about it. I do know that that demon eventually and prove once and for all that I'm not crazy!"

The tail continues to wrestle and twitch in your grasp.

"Hey!" Aligot interrupts, "Check again, we should be getting near the place."
Camille unfolds a piece of paper in her hand.

"That way." She says, pointing south. "The barrier is weak in that direction."
"..Are you sure?" Aligot worriedly says back, "We should be standing in the center of a village, but I don't see any of the lanterns out."

"It's probably fine, I'm sure they evacuated already." You say to Aligot. At least that's what the guard would do back in your world when something like a hurricane was approaching.

"..Heh, yeah, you're probably right Jack." He says, turning his bird to face the direction that Camille pointed out.

The forest seems to envelope your party as it becomes thicker and thicker. If it weren't for the fact that Camille gave the birds lanterns to hold in their mouths, then it would be completely pitch-black right now.
Looking up, you can't even get your bearings from the stars. The woodland canopy is like a million hands and arms grabbing every light from the sky.

CRUNCH

The party stops, and you hear a girly squeal from the port side.
You stop yourself from saying some comforting words to Yuuki when you realize that it was Aligot who did that.

"Who's there?!" Camille shouts, shining a light off in that direction.

It illuminates a single figure, riding another goofy looking bird. You recognize him from the battlefield the other day.
Fritelli recognizes him too, "Antonin? What are you doing out here? I thought all the knights were supposed to stay in the castle."

He huffs and walks over to your party, "We were, but my stupid sister apparently didn't get the message and ran off to warn a village. Have you seen her?"
"We were just at a village and no one was there. Maybe your sister already got them out?"
"Hmph. Maybe. I'm going to go have a look, let me know if you see her wandering around out here. Her sense of direction is pretty bad."

He walks back the direction you came from. Fritelli looks troubled after hearing that, but your party continues to delve deeper into the forest.

The woods start to lose all meaning as each tree starts to blend together. You were never really comfortable with navigating on land. You're not sure how the landlubbers put up with it.
Camille tells everyone to stop, "Okay, it's stopped up ahead. Dismount and grab your weapons."

Helping everyone off, and Yuuki unpack her weapon. Your party sets off toward a clearing.

Entering the field, the tall grass that would normally be overgrowing has been matted down.
And in the center of that matted-down field, is a giant black spot. Slowly it uncurls into a more feline shape as it sees the lights of your party approaching.
You've seen the skins of big cats before, but this one could provide a skin large enough to cover half of the deck of your old ship. It moves like a smooth liquid through the grass as it approaches.

"Get ready!" Camille yells, assuming a defensive stance.

Immediately the kitty slowly slinks through the overgrown grass. Only offering hints at it's position through the pushed-over grassy stalks.

First up is Aligot who unleashes a flurry of green missiles. Most of them getting lost in the grass, but several swerve at the last minute and impact with something large and furry.
You try to herd the members of your party away from the tall grass. You keep it at bay with your revolver, but that only seems to slow his approach down instead of outright stop it.

You expend four shots of your revolver, most of them hitting true. The cat, realizing that his hiding game isn't working very well, instead tries to rush straight at your party!

Only to meet the sharp end of your cutlass. Pinning the cat to the ground with your mighty strength, the other members of your party slash and stab at the black, viscous blob. The sharp claws wildly flailing and slashing at the air surrounding your arms. He jerks upward and frees himself, leaping back toward the tall grass.

Not before you use the last two shots in your revolver. He chooses a terrible time to look back at your party as the revolver arounds impact his right eye. A terrible screech fills the night air as he crouches down and reassesses the situation.

You're suddenly aware that one of those flailing claws caught your wrist. Your jacket is torn slightly at the cuff.

The monster screams, and charges once more.

It just doesn't learn, does it?

You start emptying your revolver at it. This time, it's ready for you. Its inky pelt turns to liquid as it weaves and dodges between revolver fire.
Aligot tries to trap it with a hail of green bolts, but he doesn't seem to fare much better in his attempts. He freezes as the monster grows closer.

The monster is closing in now, the prattling of his paws on the soil grows in intensity until it's just within leaping range.
With a roar, its back paws leave the ground as it lunges at Yuuki.

Which is why it's a good thing Camille has extremely potent reflexes. Her twin hammers leave her hands and whistle through the air as one of them impacts the beast. It's forward leap turns into an uncontrolled tumble which ends with it crashing face-down into the moist dirt.

Without even a second thought, you slash at it with your cutlass. Yuuki and Fritelli break out of their momentary shock to follow-up to your slashes with some stabs and cuts of their own.
Several cuts tear open his inky skin, which cause it to melt into a gelatinous blob of pitch-black ichor. Hissing and boiling overtake the sound of combat as the beast melts into the Earth.

Everyone gathers themselves and their weapons. Yuuki and Aligot both seem to be in another world for a short time as everyone else walks around and picks up discarded lanterns and weapons. Camille does a small ritual over the still-disappearing mass of black ink, causing it to spark and turn to dust.

Fritelli approaches Yuuki and talks with her a bit. She's visibly shaken and speaks with a slight studder, but she recovers quickly after she receives a hug from Fritelli. Yuuki whimpers slightly as she picks up her polearm.
You don't get women.

You walk up to Aligot and slap him on the back, "Are you over it yet?"
"Um. Uh Yeah! I'm fine. It's just. It's just. Y'know. It's just."
"I'm not giving you a hug laddy, take some liquid courage." You hand your flask over to him. He reluctantly takes a swig from it and hands it back.

"Okay, let's try again, are you feeling better?"
"..Yeah, yeah I'm fine."
"Great! Then on the way back home, you're going to ride with Camille this time and talk with her."
"W-WHAT?"
"You heard me!"

He looks downward at his feet, but you don't care. Your hopes of him being a combat prodigy have been dashed enough.

Camille shouts at the gathered group, "Hey! I found something!"

The group walks over to where Camille has been inspecting.
Except Aligot, he seems to stop and grip at his chest for a minute. Terrible heartburn maybe?

"Huh? Camille, what's up?" Fritelli says, polishing her rapier.
"You tell me." She points up at the sky with a single finger.

Looking upward, your group finds themselves under a mighty, expansive oak tree. Many of it's branches expanding so far outward in every direction that the entire tree looks like it's sagging.
In the moonlight, below the canopy of the tree, you can see something glittering and shining.

It's a shield with the emblem of a cat on it. Along with long strands of flowing blonde hair that ripple over a set of clearly cracked and disintegrating armor.

"Odette? Is that you?" Fritelli shouts at her,
"Oh gods why did you of all people have to find me like this, GO AWAY" She shouts back.

You think back, "Odette? Right, that was the blonde knight who was that other knight's sister. He was looking for her." You say to yourself and Yuuki who is standing right next to you.

"Hmm? She's his sister?" Yuuki asks with clear confusion on her face. "Excuse me, Odette? Why are you hiding in a tree?"
"To escape the monster, obviously! I thought I could take it and then my sword broke. So I jumped up here instead!"
Fritelli suddenly stifles a laugh.

"You jumped up in a tree to escape a big cat? Seriously?"

"I don't need to hear this from you! It worked didn't it?! Just go away!"
"Well, why don't you come down?"

Odelle is silent for a minute.
"My clothes are breaking."
"Say again?"
"MY CLOTHES ARE BREAKING! I got hit a couple times and they started to crack when I got up into the tree. I'm worried if I move too much they'll just fall apart."

"So what are ye going to do then? Stay there all night?"
"Maybe I will!" She shouts

>"Just jump down, you'll be fine!"
>"Lass, come down or I will come up there and get you down."
>"Yuuki, go up there and get her down."

"Oh just jump down, Lass! It'll be fine! I'll catch you if you want!"
"NO! No no no. No. Hold on. Just-"

She shifts her weight slightly in the tree. The branch creaks as she does so.
"Just.. Hold on.. I'll jump down. Don't catch me!"

Everyone steps back, but you stay near the tree to catch her in case she falls.
"Okay.. I'm going to jump.. 3...2..."
...
"Okay, hold on, hold on, 3...2."
"Aye'm coming up there."
"NO NO! HOLD ON! Just.. Here I go.."
She slides off the branch and starts falling.

That's when you notice that one of the locks of her hair has caught in a twig. You try to grab her before she falls too far and it gets ripped from her head.
A silver-tipped polearm reaches past you and nimbly cuts the offending twig, freeing the captive section of hair. She continues her fall unimpeded before landing directly between you and Yuuki with both feet planted on the ground.

"Okay, okay, there. Now can you plea-"

Suddenly, a rippling and cracking noise fills the air. The metallic bits of her armor slowly start to splinter and slide off of her.

And for a brief moment, the lantern light glistens off of her skin. Revealing the salty residue on her skin and her tiny pink underwear.

A shriek fills the cool night air. Yuuki is quick to grab her into a hug and wrap her baggy covering around her. You take your barrier coat off and throw it at the both of them before you start walking back toward the birds.

Later, your entourage is back on the road again. This time heading toward the village that you didn't investigate. The moon rests full in the sky, lighting up the once dark and dank forest.

The mouthy lass sits in front of Yuuki with a reddened blur across her face. Yuuki keeps her arms wrapped around her as she covers herself with your coat. The whole way back she complains about how she could have totally taken that monster if she just had better swords.
Yeah right, Lass.

Two people on separate birds approach your group from the other direction. The boy shouts as he spots his sister sitting in front of Yuuki and rushes to her side. Scolding her intensely for her actions.

The girl approaches on her bird. It's the green haired knight, Felice, who has seemed to have caught up to the group.

"Felice, did you find anything in the village?"
"We didn't. We were hoping that they just ran away, but no one's come back yet. Did you evacuate them, Odelle?"
"What? No! I was going to but then I found that big dumb monster."

This piques Camille's interest as she mushes her bird along, nearly throwing Aligot off in the process. The others follow out of curiosity.

Your party arrives in the village to find Camille and Aligot searching around with their lanterns. Camille is ripping off sheet after sheet of paper and burning them in the air.

"What happened? What do you see?"
"Nothing! It's exactly the same as last time!" Camille spouts back.
Slowly, the pieces of paper start to glow and hiss, footprints on the ground start to shine in the moonlight as more papers float and burn through the air.
"I knew it! I'm not crazy! Look!"

Footprints of all kinds decorate the ground. Small prints, large prints, large bird prints. You don't know much about tracking people, so you keep your mouth shut while Camille explains.

"There is no sign of a fight here, no sign of monsters, no signs of anyone dying. It's just.. villagers were here one moment, gone the next!"
