“I… actually have one more question.” Deep Purple chimes. “Just because it’s been bothering me, the more I think about it…”

“What is it?”

“I-It’s like you keep mentioning with the tournament… But, um, it’s s-something else about it.” Deep Purple tilts his head, as if trying to remember something. “… Akiho said that only one person goes to fight A-Analogman because the others will be trying to stop him from destroying different segments of the island…” He murmurs with a puzzled tone. “Doesn’t that bother you?”

“… Now that you mention it…” You mutter, thinking back to the time that conversation took place. “What the hell IS the deal with that?”

Is that fucker holding the entire island hostage? Maybe that’s why everyone was so desperate to get you to join the tournament… Of course, you still have no intention of playing into that stupid fuck’s hands, even if it means you’re not going to help the other seven directly. You weren’t stupid enough to join them in a trap. If you could help at all.

… Ha. Maybe DP was right about you.

“Are the different segments of this island? What the fuck does that even mean?” You ask, exiting the ruined train with railing you salvaged. Thoughtfully, DP trails after you with a curious expression. After a moment of debate, you decide to continue exploring North, while keeping out of sight of any Digimon.

As you continue, there seems to be remnants of a station, along with a couple other scattered trains.

“Well… it’s like with Railroad Plains and Signpost Woods. File Island is divided into a lot of different places…” He answers. “But they’re really big. I don’t know how someone would blow up segments, much less the entire island...”

“He’s going to have to have a shitton of firepower if he wants to blow up an island.” You comment.

“Machinedramon?” You parrot. “That’s right, that mop from back then mentioned his name, didn’t he?”

DP nods in affirmation. “Jijimon. He says, that a long time ago, Machinedramon was thought to be the strongest Digimon ever… I-I don’t really know the story.”

“Do you think Machinedramon is hot shit?”

“I-I guess?”

“No ‘guesses’, buddy.” You look unimpressed, regardless. Still, if Analogman’s intention was to blow up the island, you wondered what kind of arsenal he had to be packing. Machinedramon couldn’t be the only thing now, could he?

Pushing that thought aside, you investigate the station. As you navigate through the cluster of trains, you squint to make out a figure.

You see something big. As you edge closer and peer behind the train, you see something massive. Like DP, he seems to be purple… but that’s not all you see. You see what seems to be a monstrous, mechanical dinosaur laying on the ground. It skin is purple, as if decaying. That aside, it seems to be motionless too…

But what seems to be most eye-catching to you is that there’s a person kneeling right beside that monster. He is wearing a beanie; he looks older than you, but can’t be older than 25, you think. Curiously, you watch him pet the head of that beast.

“Is it almost time?” He asks quietly.

As you watch from behind the train, DP quietly follows your lead and peeks out the edge too. Unable to help yourself, you mutter quietly, “Time for what?”

Unfortunately, the beast seems to hear you.

Slowly, that Digimon rises to his feet, footfalls heavy and crushing the grass and flowers underfoot. It looks even fucking bigger than it already did while laying down. Slowly, but surely, that Digimon turns over to where you and DP are hiding, and stares.

“What? Is someone over there?” The guy goes, striding over to where you both are. Your first idea is to run because clearly this guy and whatever the fuck his Digimon is seem to be out of your league, but you end up staying in place unless that monster tries chasing after you. As the lays eyes on you, he glances over to your partner, and then to you with a friendly expression. Right behind him, his Digimon peers at you with yellow eyes.

“Huh.” He murmurs. “So, are you a tamer too?”

“Yeah, I am.” You respond, deciding to step out from behind your hiding spot. At this point, hiding would be pointless—besides, you gotta set an example for DEEP PURPLE. Who, unfortunately, is intimidated to the point where he’s hiding behind you again. “The big guy with you?”

“Yeah. This guy’s been with me since forever—in a way, anyway. But enough about me.” He says mildly, kneeling down a little and peering over to DP. “Haha, whoa! I’ve never seen this kind of Digimon before. What are you?”

“I’m a D-Dorumon…” He says shyly. “But, um. They call me DEEP PURPLE.”

“Fuck yeah they do.” You grin.

“DEEP PURPLE? Nice. I’ve never seen a Digimon like him before, honestly.” The guy grins, before looking back up at you. “Then again, I haven’t seen much since I just got back.”

Briefly, you shoot a glance to your partner. In response, you nudge him back, causing him to smile at you a little.

“So.” You start, looking back at the guy. “What’s your name?”

“Hiro. This guy’s name is Bauki.” He grins. “Any other questions while we’re at it?”

Part of you wants to question his taste in names, but whatever. “’Got back’? What? To this place?” You ask. Much to your surprise, the guy nods.

“You must be new here if you’re asking that.” He shoots you a thoughtful expression. “But then again, I might as well be new too. I haven’t been to the Digital World in years, and all of a sudden Jijimon decides to call me back. The Digital World’s in a another crisis. Go figure, right?” The guy sighs and shrugs after giving DP another pat on the head. After, he stands back up and pats his Digimon on the head.

“So what did you mean by “almost time”?” You ask. Hiro smiles at you for a moment, before patting his partner’s snout.

“Time for him to go.” He responds.

“He’s going to die?” DP asks, looking sad.

“You seem awfully acquainted with how things are right now.” You comment. DP glances at you and nudges you again. What? Was he not pleased by your attempts at making a conversation?

“He’s dying?” DP asks, looking sadly at Hiro.

“Bauki’s about that age.” Hiro nods. In turn, the Bauki blinks slowly at him, watching. “Not that it’s a bad thing… Digimon are special that way.”

“Just a moment,” You interrupt. “I have no fucking idea what you’re talking about. Would you mind telling me what’s happening?”

“… You’re definitely a new tamer, huh? I’ll tell you in a moment.” He muses. “For now, Digimon grow up and get stronger like we do. But, the stronger Digimon grow, that also means they also get closer to dying. In this guy’s case, it’s… time now.”

Quietly, the MetalGreymon lays back down on the ground and closes its eyes. As he curls into a ball, Hiro pets his head with a saddened smile. “It’s okay. I’ll see you again soon.”

DP bows his head in remorse. You don’t know where to look, so you watch the spectacle unfold. Slowly, strings of data and code peel away from Bauki’s body. Rather than fading outright or completely, he degenerates into nothing but data. Eventually, his form becomes smaller and smaller, condensing into a ball.

Quietly, Hiro approaches the ball and holds it in both of his hands. As the light settles, you’re rather startled to see that such a big Digimon became an… egg?

Before you can say anything else, just moments after Bauki’s death, the egg he turned to hatches in Hiro’s hands. With a grin, he greets the little ghost thing that hatched from the egg.

“Welcome back.”

“Digimon are reborn when they die.” Dorumon

“Well, if you train your Digimon and treat them well, they reincarnate after they pass away.” Hiro grins, before glancing at his phone with a satisfied expression. “That aside, how do I know how things are? Like I said, I’ve been to the Digital World already. Jijimon called me back since he said Analogman was around, and I decided to help. The guy just doesn’t know how to quit.”

Hiro shrugs.

“They said there was this tournament going on, but they said they’re not going to do anything yet because they’re trying to figure out the game plan. I’m just letting them do what they want because it seems nicer to work with other people.” He scratches his cheek. “13 years ago, it was just me and my Digimon, after all. That aside, File City was terribly small.”

“Wait, wait, wait.” You say. “You beat Analogman before?” You ask with a bewildered expression.

“Are you going to fight Analogman with a baby?” You ask, unimpressed with the floating blob on his shoulder. While Hiro seems amused, he doesn’t seem to be offended by your words.

“Well, don’t let appearances fool you. I can guarantee you Richard is stronger than he looks.” He responds. In turn, Poyomon chirps happily. “That aside, I’m sure there’ll be time for me to retrain him. But mostly, I just want to see what’s changed on File Island. It might have been 13 years in the real world, but it… what, I think it was 780-something years here?”

“Well, shit.” Analogman might as well be a fucking fossil, you think.

“But you agreed to work with those guys from the city.” You say with thinly masked disgust. Catching onto your words, DP nudges your leg with a frown. “Did they try roping you into doing stupid shi—“

More firmly, DP butts his head against your leg, his frown more evident. As this happens, Hiro looks on with a curious expression.

“Not fond of working with others, I take it?” Hiro asks. “Well, they’re not all that bad. Taiga seems like he’s been Jijimon’s new favorite since I’ve been gone from what I heard. Those guys have been through their fair share of trouble… and besides, even if I helped all those years ago, it’s been so long that I might as be new here too.” Hiro sighs, looking up at the sky with a contented expression. “They know this place better than I do now, so I figured I’d lend a hand.” On the off side, Hiro gives you a glance.

You look at Hiro with a frown. “I think it’s stupid that they’re choosing to throw themselves into a deliberate trap set up by Analogman.”

“Huh. You have a point there.” Hiro pauses, and then shrugs his shoulders while taking care to move Richard into his arms. “So what if it’s a trap?”

“… What?”

“So what if it’s a trap?” Hiro asks, unbothered by the principle of running headfirst into a trap. “I have to ask, honestly. You seem really bothered.”

“Why the fuck aren’t you? It’s stupid—You all would have to be idiots to play right into the bad guy’s hands!” You argue. “He’ll know everything our Digimon can do and everything we’ll have up our sleeves if we go with what that shit piece wants! Honestly, the only real option would be for all of us to throw the tournament!”

“If we don’t go along with what he wants, you do realize File Island will pay the price, don’t you?” Hiro asked pointedly.

“H-He and I will find a way to save the island on our own—“ DP speaks up in your defense.

“Do you have a plan?” Hiro asks. “No offense to you, DEEP PURPLE, but the way I see it is that your partner cares more about himself than the fact countless lives are at stake. Just pointing that out.” He pauses, and adds. “Honestly, I don’t see anything wrong with entering that tournament because I’m confident my partner and I will be fine, regardless of what role we’re given in the end. I feel like he got really burnt and jaded in the past, and has issues with other humans because of it. Meanwhile DP comes along with no ultier motives and is honestly trying to protect us and fight for us, while at the same time he's depending on us. DP probably reminds MC of the way he used to be before events made him into an asshole.

“Afraid? Why the fuck would I be afraid?”

“Well, you were asked to join a tournament to save the island. It’s a lot of pressure, isn’t it?” Hiro responds. “It’s understandable if that’s the reason why. You think the tournament’s a trap. That’s a pretty good assumption, and I wouldn’t put it past Analogman to cheat by knowing your partner’s fighting style. Still, Digimon are always evolving, so it’s not that big of a deal to me.” Hiro laughs, as if remembering something funny. “Which reminds me… you can’t even play a card game with him without him resorting to cheating.”

“I don’t want to know what kind of history you have with the guy if you can find the time to play cards with him.” You deadpan.

“It’s a long story.” He shrugs helplessly with a sheepish smile.

"Either way, I’m not afraid of this fucker. I just dislike how they just throw themselves into the tournament without thinking of different options.” You fold your arms. “I mean if he can destroy the island why do the tournament. What is the power that Analogman has?”

“I think, all of us have found our own reasons for fighting. Still… not even I know what he is anymore.” Hiro responds, somewhat ashamed. “The first time around, he nearly succeeded in blowing up File Island, but something happened which caused his end to blow up. But why is it now, he’s still here?”

“He’s not some kind of Digital Ghost, is he?”

“If he was, it wouldn’t surprise me either way. When I first fought that guy, he was convinced that Digimon were just data; things that were no better than slaves. He might still be out to prove that.” Hiro pets Richard’s head fondly. “Of course I don’t believe that. That’s why, I’m here now. I want to protect this place because it let me meet my partner all those years ago.” Hiro pauses, before looking at you with a questioning expression. “You keep saying that there are different options, but what do you have in mind?”

“I would point out that joining the tournament would be the fastest way to do that, but you don’t want to hear any of that.”

“Wait, seriously?”

“Is… that a no?”

Hiro laughs at your sudden enthusiasm, but he doesn’t seem to mind your question. In fact, he picks up his phone out of his pocket, and toggles through the screens to show your Poyomon’s stats.

“Bauki… Well, MetalGreymon had much higher stats as you can guess. Since Richard’s a newborn, he only has a fraction of that. I’ve been taking care of Digimon for a long time, as you can guess.”

With Richard hitching a ride on DP, the both of you walk out of the ruined train station. Curiously enough, the Digimon that seemed to be ignoring you and DP moments ago are now very alarmed and edge away from you. Is that because of Richard?

Goddamn.

Either way, with Hiro tagging along, it seems like you don’t have to worry about being jumped. Regardless, as the four of you walk leisurely through the Railroad Plains, Hiro speaks up.

“This place used to be known as… Unvwavering Forest. Or was it Native Forest? Either way, I have no idea where all these trains come from.” Hiro comments, glancing around. “Pretty crazy how things change, but then again, it’s been 780 years, apparently.”

“So, what do you plan on doing, Hiro?” You ask, peering over to him as he’s knee-deep in a cluster of mushrooms.

“Haha, whoa! I found some Digi-Mushrooms.” Hiro grins, easily pocketing the mushrooms in his phone. “Oh, you can have some too, if you want. They’re pretty handy to have in the event you run out of food to feed your Digimon. That aside, your question… I’ll be participating in the tournament. Before you voice your concern, as things stand, it’s kind of a second priority for me at the moment.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.” Hiro says, with a matter-of-fact voice. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m going to help them, but at the same time, I want to explore the Digital World.”

“Speaking about that… What’s the Digital World like? Did you enjoy your time here?”

He looks over to you, and nods.

“Of course I did. The first time around, I was ten, just with my Agumon.” He smiles nostalgically. “It was a little frustrating back then, because Jijimon roped me into helping File City grow by recruiting Digimon to join. Really, nothing was as convenient as things are now.” He chuckles, before scratching the back of his head. “Does that make me seem old?”

“Well, it seems like you enjoyed it… somehow. Was it annoying, getting dragged into that kind of mess?”

“Initially. But, I’m thankful I got the chance to go to the Digital World because I met my partner.” Hiro smiles, before patting Richard’s head. “What about you?”

“I’m glad I met DP.” You respond, reaching down to pat his head. “But, he’s why I need a weapon. If he’s watching my back, it’s only fair I watch his. Men always repay their debts.”

“Well… don’t you trust him to be able to protect you?” Hiro asks curiously, as he continues glancing around the area—presumably for anything he can gather. Probably food. You’re not sure if you should do that too, considering you’re still concerned over finding a weapon you can use. “No offense though. I get what you’re saying about being a man, but there’s more to being a partner than just that.”

“What do you mean?”

“You should learn to rely on him a little more.” He muses, as he picks up another mushroom. Shortly after he does, Richard squeaks at him. This prompts Hiro to immediately hand the mushroom over to the baby Digimon, who in turn begins to gnaw and suck on the mushroom as if it’s a pacifier. “I mean… they’re our partners, after all. Trust is an important part of any relationship.”

“… Yeah…” DP pipes up, peeking at you as he hands you a Digi-Mushroom he harvested on his own. “I’m glad I met you too… That’s why… I want to prove I can be reliable.”

“I know he’s reliable, but sometimes it’s the gesture that’s important, y’know? He may not need me to watch his back, but I’ll always be there if he does.” You say, taking the offered Mushroom out of DP’s paws before patting his head. “I want to prove I can be reliable too, besides it’s not like I’m trying to 1 vs 1 Digimon barehanded.”

At the latter comment, DP’s head tilts with a confused expression. “But didn’t you already—“

“Shhh.” You interrupt. You didn’t want Hiro to know about that, just yet.

Hiro, although nonplussed, decided not to comment. This prompts you to ask him a question.

“Hiro, what do you think being a partner means?”

“Well, it’s being there for your partner, of course.” Hiro responds. However, he doesn’t stop there. “Think of it this way: for however long you’re here, your partner will be by your side. He’ll be there for you thick and thin, right?”

“Right.”

“He’ll protect you for certain, but you have to have the faith to rely on your partner. After all, during a battle… he’s trusting you to make the right decision. Even now, since you’ve arrived, you’ve been taking care of him, haven’t you?”

“Well, yeah.”

“Training him, allowing him to rest when tired, making sure he’s well-fed, watching him grow stronger… Really, he’s counting you to watch him. I understand you want to be reliable, but don’t you already see that you’re taking care of him?” Hiro asks pointedly. “The way I see it, partners help each other grow stronger. He’s counting on you to help him grow, and in return, he’ll protect you with that newfound strength. I get what you’re saying about being a man, though.” He pauses, and adds. “But sometimes, a man has to let his friends fight their own battles.”

“I can’t just sit still. I can do more than just think of strategies and be a big juicy target.”

“So is it fine to rush out and be a target in the middle of the battle? The reason why your partner rushes out first during a fight is to draw attention AWAY from you.”

“Look—I know he’ll grow strong in time, but neitherof us are that strong yet. If we’re watching each other’s backs all the time, odds are we’ll survive to that point.” You reason. “… I don’t want to just be a trainer or a cheerleader. We’re partners—if he’s getting his ass kicked, I’ll come to help, and if I’m getting my ass kicked, he’ll come to help me.”

“But what if you die as a result of that recklessness while you’re in the middle of the fray?” Hiro questions, looking at you rather intently. DP is rubbing his head against your leg. “I know—it’s a terrible feeling to be a cheerleader, as you put it, but it’s more accurate to say that you’re his strategist. You’re the one who’s going to teach him how to fight. Anything you do now will reflect on him later.”

“… How’d you manage when you were here without any other humans as a kid?”

“I relied on my partner, of course.” He laughs. “Granted, I used to make a lot of care mistakes before. It’s kind of mortifying to think back to that time, but then again… everything that I learned how to do back then has helped me become the person I am today. It was rough, I’m not going to lie— fighting all those berserk Digimon to convince them to come to the city… chasing after Ogremon and his goons, and not to mention all the errands I had to run. But even then, I wasn’t alone.”

True, but I feel that the moral implications of not doing anything might lead to DP being overprotective of us or we might be used as leverage against him in a battle.

If I was to prioritize how we should factor into fighting, we should utilize humanity's ingenuity, guile, and resources to provide support and distractions rather than damage

Also we train alongside DP I feel we should prioritize our quick logical thinking, mobility and ability to dodge over physical strength.

We should build ourselves up in the style of Human Partner you'd usually get in Gash Bell.

I've ALWAYS been sketchy about Biomerging.

Because what happens if your personality/identity ends up being broken down/assimilated by your partner unintentionally

Nothing's set in stone at this point. Your partner will become what you influence him to be.

It doesn't really work like that.
Like many things in Tamers, Biomerging is a reference to Evangelion, specifically to synchronization, and I just defeated my own argument, didn't I?

Well, Biomerging is the ultimate expression of the bond between a Tamer and his partner. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't really care about literally becoming one for a while.

In fact, in the japanese dub, the voices of the Mega forms were different from the voices of either partner in the fusion. That might indicate that they've really become a single entity, and what little separation they still have is represented by those naked floating conversations they have sometimes.
>>
>>34498410
>Your partner will become what you influence him to be

That's vague.

But I'm sure it'll work out as long we carry ourselves with like a God of Judgement that loves righteous and abhors and destroys all evil gods.
>>
>>34498517
>carry ourselves with like a God of Judgement that loves righteous and abhors and destroys all evil gods.
How boring
>>
>>34498468
On an aside, before I post the next segment, the way I've always seen biomerging is that the digimon partner houses the human partner inside of their digicore, aka their very being. While the human is there, the Digimon has access to the known highest matrix-- that's to say, the human brain. Matrix Evolution implies that they have become one. They're, like you said, in sync.

“Was there ever a situation where you had to protect him?”

“Hmm… Does pushing him out of the way of attacks count? Hiro has a thoughtful expression. “He would get angry at me back then for interfering in fights. “It’s the Digimon’s job to fight, not the humans!”” Hiro laughs sheepishly. “Eventually, I just learned to go about things the way I always did when I had a V-Pet. Just let them do their thing.”

“Doesn’t that bother you? Letting him do all the fighting?”

“Hey, it’s not like I’m leaving him out in the open. I’m a tamer. I’m supposed to support my partner no matter what to make sure he doesn’t get hurt. But, in the case he does? If he needs recovery, I’m on that. If he needs a power boost, I’ll give that to him rather than get in his way.” Hiro smiles jokingly, to ease the tension. “Hey, if he wants a band-aid after a hard battle, I’ll give him that too.”

We really need advice here.
The way I see it, we are _this_ close to fucking up badly, in a way we can't recover easily, be it by alienating potential allies or by hurting DP's feelings or betraying his trust, and Anon's attitude towards anything that involves cooperation or taking non-direct combat roles is only making the situation worse.

Hiro is a treasure trove of information, and I doubt there is anyone with more experience on the Taming an Caring for digimons around.

“What do you suggest I do?” You ask. Hiro looks at you for a moment, but looks back to the sky.

“That depends, doesn’t it? You haven’t told me what you really want.” Hiro pauses, standing back up and looking at a trio of Gabumon that seem to be running towards you both. “Seems like we’ve got a fight on our hands. We’ll take the one on the left. Whoever finishes up first gets the guy in the middle, if you have no objections. Anymore questions?”

“Why hasn’t Richard spoken a single time since we met?”

“Ah, well. Call it a holdover from all the times he was reborn. He doesn’t need to say anything to me to get his point across.” Hiro grins. “I can just tell what he wants by looking at him.”

As you glance over to Richard, you now see that it’s spitting bubbles and trying to look as menacing as possible. DP seems also riled up. Hiro, with his phone in hand, points towards his target and in turn, Richard faces that direction.

“Attack!”

“DP, Attack!”

“O-Okay!”

In that moment of time, DP charges forward. In a single movement, he headbutts the Gabumon’s chest with little effect. Seconds later, it recovers from the impact and summons a tower of fire at DP’s feet, thus scorching him and causing his fur to singe as he breaks away, snarling as he rears back to fight.

By contrast to over where Hiro and Richard are, Richard spews sticky, acidic bubbles at the Gabumon to the point where his target Gabumon has to back off. The third Gabumon, sees weakness in DP and spews a small fireball at him, but DP is only grazed. Fumbling, you pull out your phone to check on him.

“Moderate! Back away and gain distance, and hit them when you see an opening!”

“O-Okay!” DP seems determined to make you proud. As such, he follows your directions and puts a decent distance between him and the Gabumon. As one stops to use that fire tower attack, DP takes the chance and runs forward. Successfully, he rams the Gabumon that’s chasing him into the second, but runs back to maintain his distance. While those Gabumon are damaged, they continue to chase after your partner.

Richard, having knocked out his Gabumon target by burying and suffocating him with bubbles, shifts away at Hiro’s direction to aid you and DP. As such, by spewing bubbles, he distracts the second Gabumon from chasing after DP. Like you directed like before, DP rams Gabumon, this time pushing him back considerably. DP seems riled up now.

“Attack!”

Without responding this time, DP relentlessly goes forward and engages in a physical fight with the Gabumon. As much as you’d like to jump in, you take Hiro’s advice from the time before and decide to let him fight his own battles. All the while during this time period, you keep a close eye on his health.

“Don’t let him get you! Kick the shit out of him!”

DEEP PURPLE scratches, claws, bites and kicks while bashing the Gabumon over and over with his head. You hear him yelp briefly as the Gabumon manages to distract him by setting his tail on fire. As you see DP’s health decline, much to your surprise, you see a health floppy fly through the air and intergrate itself into DP. Glancing back, you see Hiro and Richard cheering you both on. So he’s leaving this battle to you, huh?

Finally, the brawl breaks apart as Gabumon pushes DP pff. As you look at your phone, you realize that there’s a prompt called “Finisher” lighting up.

“FINISH HIM!” You yell, throwing your hand out dramatically as you strike another pose. As you glance down to the screen, you grin as you yell the attack name. “METAL CANON!”

Immediately, DP shoots three consecutive shots of what appear to be cannonballs. As all three hit and explode upon contact with the Gabumon, for the finishing touch, he charges forward and headbutts it for a final time, causing the horn to break. Instantly, the Gabumon falls to the ground motionless, as the other two wake from their state of incapacitation and drag off the unconscious one.

Hiro and Richard look pretty pleased with the events of the battle. Proudly, DP looks to you with a grin as he bounds up to you. Is he that pleased from fighting on his own? Regardless…

“I did it!” He chimes happily, looking up at you for praise.

“Fuck yeah you did!” You laugh.
