Let's see, Cecilia seems to have ear to these sort of things so she will be your best bet about gossip. So you'll ask her about it during lunch. Homeroom has Ms Orimura go over safety with IS again and there will be another IS practice, this time after lunch. Other than that, classes are pretty normal and pass by quickly enough.

The bell rings and lunch begins. Figuring that it would be best to get your investigation out of the way so you can enjoy lunch, you quickly get up.

“John going somewhere?” Charles asks as you get up from your seat.

“Yeah, going to investigate what the gossip was about.” you answer him, “Go ahead to the cafeteria. I'll catch up with you.”

“No, I think I'll join you. This sounds interesting, after all it caught your interest.” Charles says enthusiastically.

“Cool. Now let's go ask Cecilia, she seems to be in the know about these sort of things.” you say as you make your way to Cecilia.

The two of you make it across the classroom to where Cecilia is seated. “Hey Cecilia I want to ask you something.” you ask her, still seated.

“Ah John what would that be? Are you curious about how much progress I have made with your cooking lessons? Sadly I don't have anything prepared yet.” Cecilia replies.

“I think I'll wait til after we finish the first bunch of lessons. That way you can really impress everyone with your progress.” you answer.

“I suppose you are right, it would be better to impress you. That will just mean you will have to wait.” Cecilia replies with a smile. “Let the three of us head to the cafeteria then. We will need the energy for the afternoon IS practice.” she says getting up from her seat.

Basically this. You are high school students in a place where politics play big part of. On one hand you can't let a high school guy run amok with girls everywhere. “Charles tell me if anyone is coming. With how girls gossip, this would be all over campus before the end of lunch.” you ask him.

“John you are not going to do anything bad. This whole thing sounds like something questionable.” Charles tells you in an almost chiding manner.

“I am hurt by such an assertion. I am not going to do something questionable.” you quickly reply.

“John, Charles is right. We should go and have lunch.” Cecilia says still a bit nervous.

Hmm Cecilia is still nervous and Charles isn't exactly happy with the whole set up. Best to ask quickly and with a bit of concern in your voice. You lightly hold both of Cecilia's hands and ask, “Cecilia it is just that today it seems all the girls were gossiping about us. I am just worried if I did something wrong or committed some sort of faux pas.”

“Ah John it is nothing like that.” Cecilia answers quickly. “It is just something that the girls have planned.” she continues now blushing and slightly turning her head away. “In fact it is not that you did something wrong but rather how wonderful you are.” Cecilia says.

“Then what is it? I mean after all Charles and I are the only guys here. It is a bit hard at times to get along with all you girls.” you ask. For some reason you hear Charles cough a bit half way through.

“John if you try this again, I will have to stop you.” Charles says to you as the three of you make it to the cafeteria.

“Hm why? Weren't you also curious about the gossip?” you ask with Cecilia holding onto your arm, she really likes being escorted this way.

The three of you make it to cafeteria but lunch is in full swing so it takes a bit before you get your lunch. You see Houki already seated so you join her. Houki wasn't really that talkative so the four of you enjoy lunch in peace and quiet. After the four of you finish lunch,you head to the stadium for the IS practice class. By the time you head out of the locker room with Charles you see Cecilia and Rin having a practice duel.

Seeing as how the duel has already begun, you stay out of the field and go to the launch bay where everyone is watching. You and Charles take up a position next to Houki and watch.

“So how do you think Cecilia will fare? She is a long ranged type like you, John” Charles asks.

“Hard to say. Cecilia will have an advantage with those laser bits of hers but she has a limited selection of weapons.” you reply.

You look up and see Rin charge at Cecilia. Cecilia doesn't break away til the last second using her missiles as cover which forces Rin to intercept them with her Dragon Cannons. That break lets Cecilia get enough distance to really lay down fire with her rifle. Rin is able to dodge most of the shots since the cycle rate for the laser rifle is too long in your opinion.

“Weapons that take too long to fire aren't that useful against someone that wants to get close. It allows too many opportunity for the opponent to get close.” you comment.

“A sword would be perfect. Cut down anyone that gets close and press the advantage when it shows itself.” Houki brings up.

“I am not sure if a sword would suit Cecilia.” Charles replies. “What about those laser bits you mentioned earlier John?” Charles asks.

“Yeah, they would be quite useful to distract and control Rin's movements but they have a big weakness.” you answer.

“Weakness? Like limited flight time or how fragile they are?” Charles asks.

“Flight time is fine as far as I remember. And while they are fragile, the bits are rather small and hard to hit. The real problem is the control scheme. From what I remember Cecilia telling me about the system, she needs to either control her IS or the laser bits. She cannot control both at the same time at all. That just makes her a sitting duck when controlling them. Or target practice with the drones if she wants to move around.” you reply seeing Cecilia trying to get more distance but unable to get away from Rin.

Rin is able to manuever above Cecilia and goes for a massive swipe downward. This forces Cecilia to dive and hit her afterburners towards the ground dodging the attack. Rin follows dodging what laser beams she can. Just as Rin gets half way across the field explosions erupts in between the two girls. As the dust cloud settles down, you see that Laura Bodewig out with her IS Schwarzer Regen in the field.

“You've got some nerve interrupting us. I was just about to win.” Rin yells at Laura over the comms.

“Hmm Shenlong from China and Blue Tears from England.” Laura says over the comms, completely ignoring Rin's accusation. “They looked better on paper. Must be a failing with the ones using them.” Laura continues to say.

“For you two to have personal 3rd generation IS. A country known only for large population and cheap knockoffs. Or a country living only in the past when it was once relevant. I would not even consider you two worthy enemies.” Laura returns.

“Sounds like someone wants to be beaten.” Rin yells back.

She really took the bait you think to yourself. Rin really is a hot head. You just hope Cecilia doesn't react the way Laura wants.

“Why don't you go wait your turn Laura Bodewig. I have Huang Lingyin to beat first.” Cecilia shoots back.

“Why don't the two of you come at me. Not like I need someone to rescue me when the fighting gets tough.” Laura replies.

Seeing as how easily they took the bait, you just facepalm.

“What's wrong John?” Houki asks as she sees you facepalm.

“Nothing. Just how could those two not see how obvious Laura was taunting them.” you reply while you are still facepalming.

Charles just sighs and shakes his head.

“One of these days, I should tell both of them how not to be baited.” you say.

“But John, Bodewig-san insulted both of them. Would you also not get angry?” Houki asks with an exaggerated arm swing.

“That was the point. Start with a small insult and to control the conversation so that she would be able to fight both of them in a weakened state.” you answer Houki finally removing your palm from you face.

As you answer Houki, the 2v1 duel really gets going. Rin's attacks are ineffectual, some sort of active barrier stops all her attacks.

“What was that barrier?” you ask.

“AIC. Active Inertial Canceling. It is the special ability of the Schwarzer Regen IS line.” Charles answers you.

“It is also know as an inertial arrest ability.” Houki follows up.

“Damn that will cause a lot of problems for both of us Charles. Since we both use projectile weapons, the bullets would be effected. I hope Cecilia can pull this off since she only has laser weapons.” you say.

Looks like Cecilia has begun her attack once Rin got caught by those stupidly long range wire daggers. Laura wasn't even phased by her attack, sticking to the ground and just dodging each attack. Cecilia then used her bits to charge Laura. Laura in tern activates her AIC stopping her.

“Looks like you are stuck.” Cecilia says as she aims her Starlight laser rifle

“So are you.” Laura replies as she quickly aims her shoulder mounted railgun.

The exchange of fire hits midway resulting in a rather large explosion but you hear a scream from someone.

“Kyaaaa” Rin screams as she is pulled by that wire dagger into Cecilia.

The midair collision of those two sends them both careening into the ground. Once the dust clears you see both of them on top of one another with Laura gloating over them.

“Shit, can't let things go any further.” you say.

“Tch she is taking out her frustration and anger out on them. John stop her, she has to know that this isn't the way to go about life.” Houki says obviously concerned.

“Right. Charles help me out.” say as you jump off the front of the launching bay and quickly activate Maeve.

You try and get over to where Rin, Cecilia and Laura but you see an explosion where the three of them are. Must have been Cecilia providing firing at close range with her missiles to get out from that position. Getting past the dust cloud, you see Laura holding both Rin and Cecilia by the neck with those wire daggers. Without hesitation you fire on the wire dagger hard points with Gram. Both hit just where you aim severing the wires letting Cecilia and Rin drop to the ground with there IS being forcibly deactivated. Laura must have knocked out both of their shield reserves forcing a shutdown.

Laura turns after your shots and returns fire with her railgun. You easily dodge the single shot but can't return fire since there is a chance you might miss and hit Cecilia or Rin.

“Good you are now out here. Let' see how badly you do now.” Laura says to you over the comms.

Ignoring her, you keep on maneuvering to one side to get a firing vector that won't have Rin or Cecilia.

“Keeping your distance? Afraid of me? Well as you should be.” Laura continues smugly.

Once you get the right angle you fire with Gram. Predictably Laura activates her AIC rooting her.

“Charles now, get Cecilia and Rin out of there.” you command over the comms to Charles.

“No problem John.” Charles replies quickly burning down from above and quickly grabs the two of them once he gets to the ground. He then gets out with both of them in each arm, while you continue your fire keeping Laura from moving.

“Now that both of them are safely away. Why don't we start for real now.” you say to Laura.

“Like you will last against me!” Laura yells in return.

Laura without pause fires again with her railgun, you dodge the shot opting to keep in the mid range. Here you'll be close enough to take your higher speed and thrust and force engagements you want. You circle around continually firing, Laura tries and dodge some shots and uses her AIC on others. While she is better on the ground than you are, your high speed maneuvering is proving to to be too much for her. Using Gram, you fire again with her activating her AIC but this time you open up your thrusters getting behind her. You quickly switch to your rocket launcher and fire a burst of rockets into her back. Laura to her credit, is able to quickly recover from your fire and charges at you with what appears to be an wrist mounted energy blade.

“Don't think that pitiful attack will work on me.” Laura yells at you again.

“I think it did.” you reply. You quickly aim low and fire a rocket at the ground in front of Laura throwing up dust and debris. You begin thrust to your to your right when Laura leaps out of the dust cloud with a massively concave projection of the AIC.

“I've caught you now.” Laura yells as she slows you down enough to let her finally get you in the AIC field. “Now you pay for what you did.” Laura says as she levels her railgun at you.

“I think you forgot something Laura.” you tell her as she stares at you.

“Do not talk to me so familiarly.” Laura says still staring. Suddenly gunfire from behind her hits Laura's armor forcing her to deactivate her AIC.

“You forgot there is two of us.” Charles says over the comms laying down withering fire with both of his smgs.

You take the opportunity to fire point blank with your rocket launcher while you get away. You get hit a bit by the resulting explosion but Laura is took that in full.

“Thanks Charles. I knew you would cover my back.” you say over comms waiting to the dust to clear from Laura.

“No problem John. Seems like Laura is a handful.” he replies, “So how will we handle this?”

Doesn't change the fact A) the series has a very nice amount of attractive girls and B) how utterly shoehorned her role is.

“Charles, you go low and tie her up. I'll go high and pick her apart.” you tell Charles.

“Sounds like a plan.” he replies as he flies down to the ground with a bit of distance between Laura and himself.

You go a bit higher and start circling around to get behind Laura.

“Like I will let you get away.” Laura yells as she fires her railgun at you.

Charles takes the opportunity and unloads on her with both his smgs while you dodge the shot. Laura gets hit quite a bit by the fire until she activates the AIC top stop Charles' wall of lead. You see this and swoop in with both Gram and your autoshotgun loaded with buckshot. Laura unable to withstand your fire deactivates the AIC and breaks away while you and Charles take after her.

“Be careful Charles, don't want to corner her too badly. She might do something stupid.” you say to Charles as you go back to the position you had before.

“Yeah but we should finish this now. Can't let her get one of us.” Charles says in reply.

“Right.” you say to him over the comms. Seeing as Laura is trying to get into a good position, you preempt her by going down in an attack run flight pattern. “Shame I can't overload the capacitors to get more umph out of the Gram” you say to yourself.

<That is possible but Gram would receive damage and require additional maintenance.> Reinforce prompts on the HUD

“Is that so Reinforce? Do it, we can have Ms Foss fix is later.” you tell Reinforce.

<Charge up complete.> Reinforce prompts again.

“Good” you say now in the middle of the attack run. Once in the right position you fire on Laura. Sensing that something is up throws up her AIC to your attack. The projectile hits the AIC barrier and explodes. Damn the force on the slug from the barrier and the much higher velocity must have caused it to react violently. You see Charles follow your by charging at Laura from the side with her pile driver. It would have connected if you didn't hear Ms Orimura over the stadium PA system.

“That's enough you three.” Ms Orimra says over the PA system.

“Instructor?!” Laura says in surprise.

“This is obviously a problem. I'll just have you settle this squabble during the Tourney.” Ms Orimura continues.

“If that is what you wish.” Laura replies to Ms Orimura. After her reply she deactives her IS and begins to walk back to the Women's locker room.

“Smith, Dunois that won't be a problem with you two.” Ms Orimura asks.

“That is fine with me.” you answer.

“I am also fine with that.” Charles says in agreement.

“Good. Now that is all for this class.” Ms Orimura says ending the class.

“Well that was a handful. I am glad I never mentioned Alscaise-Lorraine to her.” Charles says as he deactivates his IS.

“Yeah but now we have to beat her in front of an entire stadium full of people.” you say as you fly down to Charles' position.

“True but she won't be able to act on her impulses if we do that.” he says.

“That is true, we'll just have to wait til then.” you say as you land. You look over to where the launching bay with all the girls including Cecilia and Rin. Looks like they are getting taken away by some nurses. You hope they aren't too badly hurt.

“We should get changed quickly and make sure Cecilia and Rin aren't too hurt.” you add looking in their general direction.

“Maybe. Or you give them some time to at least rest first.” Charles says as you both make it to the Men's locker room.

“I think some TLC would be better for them than some get well chocolate.” you say to Charles as you get undressed, “I'm going to take a quick shower so I can be presentable. What about you Charles?”

“Ah what, take a shower? No, I'll wait to take one. I um, don't like taking showers here. I prefer the one we have at the dorm.” Charles replies.

“Ok, I won't be long.” you say as you head to the showers. After a very quick shower you get dressed and the both of you head to the Nurse's office. You knock on the door to announce yourself.

“Come in.” you hear from beyond the door.

You open the door to see the nurse sitting down at her desk writing something down.

“Ah you must be for those two. You don't have to worry, just some bruises and soreness but they will be fine.” the nurse says to you, “They are over there.”

“Thank you.” you reply. You make your way over to where Cecilia and Rin are. They are both layed down on beds with some bandages but mostly have cold compresses on them.

“How are you two feeling?” you ask them both.

“Ah John you are here to see me? Are you worried about me?” Cecilia asks and now in a better mood now.

“You didn't have to come and see me.” Rin says with a mix of happiness and curtness.

“Of course I would be worried about you two. I heard your injuries aren't that bad thankfully.” you answer honestly.

“I am glad you are here to see me. I am feeling better already.” Cecilia says with a smile.

“We would have beaten her if you didn't come in. But I am glad you did.” Rin says with what you think was a bit of a smile.

“Trying to act tough in to cover your embarrassment.” Charles says, “Especially in front of John.”

They both quickly get up and rush Charles covering his mouth and begin to mumble something to him.

“Stop that you two. You are still injured and need rest.” you say to both of them. Not wanting them to aggravate their injuries you quickly move over to Cecilia and pick her up in your arms in a princess carry and quickly set her down on the bed. You quickly follow that up with carrying Rin the same manner and set her gently on her bed. “Now the both of you get some rest. I would hate to see either of you get worse.” you say with a smile.

“Yes.” Cecilia and Rin say in unison both flustered but too tired to do anything more.

“Good.” you follow up.

“John I think I'll head back to the dorm now. I'll you three alone.” Charles says to you.

“Alright I'll see you there.” you answer him.

Charles heads back to the dorm leaving the three of you alone with just the nurse here. You decide to take a seat on the foot of Cecilia's bed.

“Oh right, almost forgot. You two should learn how not be baited so easily. It was obvious Laura was baiting you to get her way.” you say.

“That doesn't matter. She insulted my country, she should pay.” Rin answers with firmness in her voice.

“That is right, as Candidate rep to United Kingdom, I cannot allow any insult to slide.” Cecilia says in agreement with Rin.

“Irregardless, you two didn't look like you had a plan to defeat her.” you reply back.

“Well that is true John. I am not exactly use to team combat or being paired up with Rin. If I was paired up with you the outcome would have been completely different.” Cecilia answers.

“Yes that's right.” Rin says somewhat angrily, “Maybe we should pair up with me one of these says and I can show you a thing or two about The Art of War.”

You just smile and shake you head at how they are both acting when you hear a rushing outside the room you are in. Followed but a crash of the door being thrown open. You see a whole gaggle of girls rush into the Nurse's office come in and stop when they surround the three of you.

“Please pair up with me John-kun.” you hear all the girls say as they hold up a paper with some writing.

“What? Let me see that.” you say as you take the closest paper from one of the girls. “Let's see changes to the next tournament has result in the formation of pairs to better simulate battle. You are choose your partner or be assigned one through a lottery system. Names are due a week before the start of the Tournament.” you read outloud.

“Anyway partner up with me John.” one girl says to you.

“No, partner up with me. I know we will win together.” another girl says.

Not good, this will get out of hand, you'll have to choose someone to try and diffuse this situation.

“Ah right. I now remember hearing about this. I actually asked Charles to pair up with him. I mean we have already fought on a team and we have been doing really well.” you tell the group of girls. You just hope they take this well. Will have to confirm this with him later. You hope he doesn't mind or already made a choice already.

“Really?” one of them asks.

“Yes. He thought it would be great since we have a good chance to win.” you reply.

The reply from the girls is a little disappointed but find the arrangement acceptable. You hear about couple of murmurs when they leave. You hear stuff about the two boys being together or how that's better this way. But really caught your ear was about how when you and Charles go out for the victory party after the tournament and follow the two of you. That was really bizarre and you hope it really means nothing because that would be ab it unnerving.

“John what is this about pairing up with Charles?” Cecilia asks after the commotion.

“Well it is just as you heard. Charles and I did save you.” you reply to Cecilia with just a bit of nervousness.

“You know John. I think this would be the perfect opportunity to teach you about The Art of War.” Rin says slowly getting up from her bed.

You gently hold onto her shoulders and press her back into the bed. “No getting up, you need rest.” you tell Rin.

“John I am sure we would win the tournament if you paired up with me. After all we have such good compatibility.” Cecilia says as you sit back onto the foot of her bed.

“I'm sorry you two but you will not be well enough to participate in the tournament.” Ms Yamada says while holding a clipboard. Must have been the nurse's report about their well being.

“What do you mean. The tournament is still some time from now. I am sure I will be well enough to participate.” Cecilia interjects.

“No means no. Not only are you injured but the damage to your personal IS' will require time to repair completely. It will take time to make sure no flaws appear either. So I cannot allow your acceptance into the tournament.” Ms Yamada says with as much firmness in her voice as she can summon.

You see Cecilia and Rin both dejected. Something must have them really wanting to participate. You don't remember hearing about any official prizes either, so it must be something else. And there was that thing among the girls, this is getting a bit fishy. You might have to investigate things later.

“John make sure you win.” Cecilia says to you with gusto.

“That is what I am planning.” you answer is confidence.

“Make sure you win. I won't let you hear the last of it if you lose to someone other than myself.” Rin follows up.

“That would imply you could ever beat me.” you tease Rin with.

“Isn't friendship a wonderful thing.” Ms Yamada chimes in.

It is getting rather late so you leave the two of them to rest overnight in the Nurse's room. Heading back to your dorm room is nice and quiet after all the commotion of the day. The peace and quiet is a nice way to wind down the day. You reach your dorm room and see the lights on but Charles not sitting down in the room.

“Hey Charles you in there?” you ask as you open the door to the bathroom. You hear him mumble out something, he must be brushing his teeth.

“Ah John wait, I'm almost done.” Charles says as he opens the shower door.

Only for you to see Charles completely naked... WAIT WHAT. What is a girl doing in the shower.
