Sorry I was slow, had to get in from work and get some grub rustled up. Tonight's thread might be a little short- I have work at ten in the morning tomorrow, but we'll be able to start waaaay early tomorrow- I'm scheduled to get off at two.

There's a tenseness hanging in the air that you can feel, even with your face hidden behind the gasmask as it is. A hand taps you on the shoulder. Nodding once, you step backwards from the fighting position of sandbags you had been helping build, and find yourself face to face with Captain Katsuragi.

“Shouldn't you be overseeing operations in the Command Center?” It comes through slightly garbled by the mask, but Misato seems to understand

“The Angels are sitting there, not doing anything. We've got satellite imagery, and Units 02 and 01 performing reconnaissance with scopes on their rifl-” She tries to explain, but you cut her off.

“Please fucking tell me you've replaced those shitty fucking pallet rifles. They're like popguns in a fire fight with La Serpiente,” you tell her, referencing a fundamentalist Catholic terrorist organization from South America.

“Ah,” she begins, embarassed. “well... The Americans had developed a battle rifle for the Evangelions, but no one thought to send it over with Unit 04.” You try to scowl from behind your gasmask, but it doesn't work.

“Fine. What did you need?”

“We need to talk.” What is with women and needing to talk to you? Jaysis fookin' Christ.

“About what?”

“Have you ever performed combat search and rescue before?”

“Yes,” you say briefly. Despite the Crown's insistence that the United Kingdom continue to honor all foreign military obligations, there hadn't been the funds to increase the military to match said insistence. So sometimes, your unit had been pressed into service doing things other than causing havoc and rescuing downed air crew. “Is it Ryoji?”

“Ka- What? No, why would you think that?” She tries to peer into your eyes through the mask's lenses, but your eyes are shadowed.

“Asuka was worried about him,” you shrug.

“Oh. Well, if he needs help, he'll be able to signal for it. Anyway, I want you to ride with the C/SAR guys. If we need to pull the kids out of their entry plugs, it might help to have a familiar face there to meet them.”

“I can do that,” you say. “Are you sure I'm not needed down here, though?”

“Positive. If the Angels do make it this far, there's not much to be done,” she confides, and something grips your heart. Conventional weaponry does no good. Swallowing- muffled like by your mask- you nod.

“I can do C/SAR. I've loaded for artillery outside of Berlin once, too.” you say grimly. “Which team do you want me riding with?”

“Whoever will have you, honestly. And I don't even want to ask what you were doing outside Berlin with artillery,” she grins at you.

“I've had a long and varied career over my long and checkered past,” you joke.

“I'm sure. At one point, you'll have to tell me how you wound up in Japan, working for NERV.”

“Sure,” you say easily. “It's not very happy and not something for small children.”

“Somehow,” Misato smiles at you, “I doubt your life is anything for small kids' consumption.” You grin behind the mask easily, and shoot her a thumbs up. She turns to go and for one long, second you're torn by the desire- almost out of nowhere- to catch her shoulder, take off your mask, and kiss her. It passes, though, and you're glad for it. There's work to be done, after all. Always work to be done. That ever elusive future for the kids to be won.

You turn yourself and head for the attached airfield. Last time you were here, someone killed a C-130 and its crew to try to get to you. You suspect it was Smith, because he had time, and motive, and opportunity. But who was he working for? You think it might have been the Russians, a deep cover agent, something.

Brushing those thoughts aside, you switch your helmet's radio from the ground defense's frequency to the C/SAR's, and the ear piece crackles to life.

“We're getting a Cryan cunt,” an Australian voice says in your ear. “Supposed to be former SAS, 's'posed to know his shit, aye?”

“Da,” a Ukrainian says next. “I have heard of the Irish Wolf. Spetsnaz did not like operating in areas he'd been spotted in.” Oh. You have a reputation. That's... That's cool, actually.

“Cheeky bugger, from what the file says and doesn't say,” the Australian, again. “According to what's not heavily redacted he conducted an operation in the Ukraine by himself, Sergei, while the Russians were driving towards Kiev.”

“Is believable, I think, Irwin. Irish Wolf was... The regular infantry for the Russian Army feared to make their way to the front, scared he or his comrades were hunting.”

“Why do they call him the Irish Wolf, then? He some kind of furry tosser, Sergei?”

“Still sounds like a cheeky cunt to me, mate. I bet I could give him a go 'round.” Being shittalked by an Australian is new, you grin, but not something you enjoy. You step onto the hard ground, and spot three helicopters, Pave Lows, it looks like, with a group of men clustered around each one.

“I heard the Wolf died in Cairo,” you cut in with a grin.

“As did I, new Comrade,” says the Ukrainian.”But then he returned to the world of the living, from the Irish Otherworld, full of hate and anger, and now he destroys those that would harm humanity's future.” You wonder if the kids know how people talk about them- saviors of humanity, as easy as nuclear weapons were the destroyers, just a few decades ago. And then the Australian opens his mouth again.

“He's a fuckin' wimp,” Irwin comments. “Protecting kids? Can't even go out and risk his neck like us? Puuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuussy,” he drags out the last word.

“Woof woof, you Aussie kangaroo fucker,” you say, grinning from behind your gas mask as you stride towards the helicopters. One group turns to face you, the men clustered around the first. The others start to shake, as though they're dying or laughing. You'd bet it's laughter.

“I'd kick yer fookin' ass, and then I'd beat your pet croc,” you continue, throwing on as broad an accent as possible, like you're straight from the bogs.

“Care to fookin' try it, guv'ner?”

“You're criminal scum, 'strayan. I might be Irish scum, but at least I'm NORTHERN Irish scum,” you say paternally. “Better Northern Irish than criminal scum.” One of the men that had turned to you starts forward, and Irwin sounds distinctly angry, now.

“Ooh, that's fuckin' it, mate, you're fuckin' goin' do-” his transmission is cut off as two of the men beside him grab his arms and keep him from coming any closer, and you close the distance.

“Careful, Irwin. Wouldn't have to have to force the UN to open up a penal colony on the Moon just for you, would we?”

The Ukrainian, Sergei, turns to you, and he's grinning. He's a middle height, not as tall as you, taller than Irwin, with a lean build, like your own. Dirty blond hair over amused green eyes, and he's the picture of a Slav. Irwin has darker hair, but not as black as yours. His eyes are blue and staring at you coldly.

“So,” you say to Sergei, ignoring Irwin. “I was told I could ride with you mates?”

“Da,” he says. “Captain Katsuragi called ahead for you. We are on call, but the other two birds are on stand-by to assist us as needed.”

“Right on,” you say easily, then turn to Irwin. “C'mon, mate, get the stick out your arse. I'm just takin' the mick.” He spits onto the tarmac, and turns away to talk in hushed tones to the man behind him.

“Do not mind him,” Sergei tells you. “He is bitter about loss of homeland. You would be too, no?”

“Yes,” you say. “But I wouldn't be such a cunt about it.” But that's a (lie-falsehood-untruth) you were a cunt about it- you couldn't take whatever loss was so great, that first time. And now you're here. And your body aches in places it didn't before, you're scarred where you weren't before, and you still don't know how to win.

You need to win. It's gone beyond that intrinsic, human, base, desire to succeed- now your entire being is dedicated to protecting the kids and giving them a future worth living in. You're shaken out of your thoughts when you pick up Asuka's voice in your ear.

“Moving to engage,” she's saying. “Shinji, Rei, Mari, provide fire so I can close.” Three affirmatives greet her, and you wonder why the C/SAR teams are able to listen in to the Evangelions. Sergei probably reads the question in your body language, as he answers.

“We are able to listen to the combat so we can know if we need to deploy,” he explains. “I earned my spurs during the Russian Invasion, Irwin his during the Reconquest. You?”

“Azore Islands. The Fleet didn't have enough C/SAR, and we had just gotten back from an operation on the island- they pressed us into service.”

“So the file is true- you ARE former SAS?”
>>
“I don't like to brag,” you tell him. “But yes, I passed Selection and earned the beret.” A garbled cry cuts what you were going to say off further, and everyone heads the for the helicopter. Picking through your memories of the radio chatter while you were talking to Sergei, someone closed and engaged the Angels and got hurt for it.

“The First Child has been ejected from her Evangelion, in the Entry Plug,” Sergei tells you as the helicopter begins spinning its rotor and picking itself up off the ground. “It's landed in a lake near the zone of confrontation,” he continues. “The second team is now on call while we conduct rescue operations.”

“Affirmative,” you tell him, as the Pave Low picks up speed.

“Chance to prove your spurs, Irish,” Irwin says. “Hook a line to your chest and when we get there you can go in, if you're man enough.”

Irwin thinks he's fucking tough? Okay, you think. You don't need to prove shit. You snap a line to a clip on your chest, and then make sure everything is tight. You double check all the knots, and then you check the rescue cradle. It's good to go. The rest of the flight passes in blessedly brief silence- Irwin staring at you, you staring at him, and Sergei looking between you.

“We're here,” the pilot says over the radio, and you nod. If Irwin is as incompetent as he is antagonistic, then you're glad you're the one going into the drink, not him. He'd probably accidentally kill Rei.

The door slides open, and you force yourself out, cradle going with you. You're falling through nothing, and then you hit the water. You draw in a huge breath, and that's when you realize they didn't give you a wetsuit or SCUBA gear.

Fine. No fucking problem. You're Declan. You shove your head underneath the water, spot the Entry Plug on the bottom. You see Rei, and begin swimming towards her, line playing out behind you like a fishing line, cradle floating above you. You're swimming hard, but you're not making enough time.

It's just water. Water's nothing. It doesn't matter your lungs are starting to burn, it doesn't matter your chest muscles are aching, it doesn't matter there's a pounding in your head that shouldn't be there. The Kids. The kids matter. You've dedicated deaths of entire nations to them, before. For their future. How can Rei have a future if she's dead? She can't.

So you swim. You swim like you've never swum before, like you were born in the water and this is a jaunt in the backyard. Powerful lunges with your arms drag you further downwards, while huge kicks with your feet keep you from going back up, propelled by your natural buoyancy.

You drive ever downwards, always down. Chest bursting, or so it feels like, you finally, finally catch her arm with your hand and drag her towards you. Clutching her close to you, you turn and begin to kick upwards, struggling with Rei's limp weight in your arm. Something slams into your back, and you lose what's left of your breath. You turn your head to look, and it's some kind of large fish- you don't have time for this.

Drawing your pistol from the hip holster, you shoot at the fish several times, the sound muted by the water around you. The fish, whatever it was, catches a bullet in the broadside, and begins floating upwards. Your air is gone, though- all you have left now are sheer will. So you turn back to swimming upwards, wondering why her Entry Plug didn't fucking float like it was designed to. It took huge amounts of damage to even hurt them, from what you remember.

What's changed? Something's fucking changed on you, and even though you're barely keeping the worst memories suppressed, you remember enough to know that something's changed and it's for the worse.

But that's all you know, because the fish took your air and he took a bullet for his efforts, but you took in water and you can't

can't stay

have to stay

Do they have Declan clones?

>every time you woke up in the hospital you were actually using your eyes for the first time
>>
“Declan, my boy. You're not dead yet. You can't die, yet. There's too much on the line.”

“I know. You think I don't know? I have the combined memories of martyrs, madmen, and destroyers worse than Hitler in my head.”

“I know. It's real- it's all real. Deals made with entities in control of the cosmos at the end of time tend to have that effect.”

“Who are you?” The world around you is black, and you're positive this is a hallucination as you drown, your mind trying to protect itself from the stark truth.

“I am- Not Lily. Not her. You have meddled, my boy. Meddled with things best left unmeddled with.” The voice is warm, comforting, male. Like how you've always imagined the voice of God to sound, if His voice wasn't the sound of thunder rolling off huge mountains, towering above you.

"Well, too fucking bad." You snarl on pure reflex. "Couldn't leave well enough alone, and I'll be damned if I stop now. Already am, so moot goddamn point."

“Ah! Such spirit. That's what I've always admired about you, you know. Born to run- and run you do, either from your past or towards the ever elusive victory or both. The game has changed, my boy.”

"Oh? Do tell, mate. 'Cuz I'm fookin' dying to hear it. Make it quick, though, because I have to save a life worth more than this dainty little pep-talk we've got going." Something thunders in your ears, like the sound of the end of the world (it was pops as people dissolved into blood-tasting liquid and you reached out for her face even as you di-)

“You will check yourself before you wreck yourself upon the immutable will of one far more powerful than you.”

>>
“You're not making any goddamn sense, mate. I need a drink, and I'm going to wake up right NOW,” you thunder back, fury and hate and rage and all the emotions that you try to keep up inside so you don't take off Mari's head when she deliberately texts you fishing for a date, or Asuka for being catty to Shinji, or Shinji for not sticking up for himself against Asuka.

And then there's a roaring in your ears and a pounding in your head and your chest aches and your fists feel like you've had arthritis for decades and

Sergei is pounding on your chest in the Pave Low, Rei sitting next to him with a towel around her shoulders, watching you.

“Agent Cryan,” she says, low enough only you can hear. “Agent Cryan,” she repeats. “Why did you save me?”

[]”You kids- all of you- deserve a future. All of you.”

We note it anon, it's just noting and getting closer to it are different things.
>>
>>34521196
We note it, and merely choose to appreciate from a set distance.
That distance being as far out of range of the crazy as we can get.
