KRA-KOW.

Thunder rattles the shaky foundations of the ancient house, almost as much as the gale-force winds that scream and howl. They fill the night with a chilling sound. No one in their right mind would be out of the perceived safety of their home on a night like this. Torrents of rain batter the broken shingles of the decrepit home. Most people would be curled up under a blanket, perhaps with a loved one. Warm and safe. That's how they would feel. Outside their cocoons, the storm raged. An ominous sign for an ominous evening. The stage was set, and you had to hand it to Gail. She did fine weather work.

You could see outside of the house, but you weren't here to admire the view. Your consciousness manifested inside of the basement, where a group of six teenagers sat around a Ouija Board. Paltry. As if one could buy occult paraphernalia at Toys-R-Us. It was almost obscene. Still, it wasn't as if your kind didn't have their fun toying with those who used them. It seemed silly that nothing could convince the masses of supernatural activity more than that stupid toy. You watched as the assembled youth placed their hands around the planchette.

You could feel the belief of these teenagers saturating the air. They wanted to be scared. They wanted a paranormal experience. Frankly, the haunting was beneath a Spectre of your talents. Frightening these teenagers would be trivial. Still, they dared to desecrate the former house of Bloody Mary herself with their silly game, and the Bureau demanded that they be taught a lesson. You were here to ensure they never returned to this place.

“Is there anyone there?” you hear the first boy speak up.

You reach out and touch the wooden planchette. As a being made of pure ectoplasm, normally you can only interact with the Material Plane after a great exertion of energy. It seemed the teenager's belief and subconscious desire to be scared fueled your ectoplasm enough that it was trivial to move the planchette about the board.

W H A T D O Y O U T H I N K ?

You spell out the letters on the board, a bit annoyed at the triviality of it all. The teenagers were three boys and three girls. The females gasped and screamed as you moved the planchette around to spell out your message. The boys seemed to give a nervous laughter as they recited each letter in turn. When you were done, you let the planchette go and stepped back.

“What do you think?” one of the females read. The first boy, a muscular blonde with a smirky smile gave a small laugh. “What, we got a sarcastic ghost or something?” Another female, one with black eye liner and a faux air of mysticism spoke in her best séance voice. “What is your name, Spirit?”

Your kind didn't have names. You don't even know if you were ever alive. All you know is that your job is to fuel belief in the supernatural. Belief was power, and the Spirit World always needed more energy.

“Thrillho... The Spectre... Supreme?” the blonde boy reads out as you finish moving the planchette. “All right, all right.” he says, looking at the other participants suspiciously. “Which one of you assholes is moving this thing to fuck with us?”

His accusations are met with cries of “Not me.” and “I'm not doing it!” Each teenager swears that they're not moving it. “Put your hand back on the fucking planchette, you stupid fuck! You're endangering us all!” the one in black cried out. You feel the belief in the room diminish just the tiniest bit as doubt starts to cloud their minds. Luckily for you, you caught a break.

The blonde one trying to be alpha takes his hand off of the planchette. He uses the hand to point accusingly at the others. Common belief was that if you took your hand off of the planchette, you left yourself vulnerable. Perfect.

You decide to use the remaining energy to call on one of the ghosts assigned to you by The Bureau of Paranormal Activities.

There was Skitter, the spider. A ghost made of the fears of mortals. Skitter could manifest spiders big or small with the right amount of energy. Fiercely loyal and required little energy compared to the others.

There was Hector, the Poltergeist. A telekinetic ghost of a man who ran afoul of an occult artifact. You and he had become good friends since he came to your service.

And then there was Gail. A wind elemental who you had currently setting the stormy scene. She would be busy right now.

You feel the ethereal winds pick up as your will summons Hector to your side. “Sweet Suzy, it's good to be up and about again!” Hector says with an air of zeal. “What's cooking, big S?” he asked. Hector was a dead pitchman from the 50s. If he were alive today, he'd be in an alleyway asking tourists if they'd like to buy one of the watches hanging inside of his black coat.

“Routine haunting, Hector. I need your powers.”

“Well, all right, S. Or should I just call you Thrillhor, now? Hah!” Hector laughed. The mortals would not hear the sounds carried in the Spirit World. They were dead to anything outside of their own five senses. Which was good for you and your ghosts. They were that much easier to manipulate. “Whatcha need me to do?”

Oh, this is an easy one.

Start off with the TK, moving everything but the board, that'll get the mortals attention. They'll start being all like "holy crap!" but it won't get them running right away.

Then, you cut plasm to the TK effect, causing all the objects to fall the floor with a loud crash. Then you have Hector manifest directly over the board go boo!
>>
>>34520552
Then when they run for the door, have him hold it shut for a bit. Nothing makes you want to get the hell out of some place faster than thinking you can't.

“Levitate everything except the board.”

Hector laughs. “Can do, big S!” he says with a nod. Hector's spirit absorbs most of the ectoplasmic energy into the room. You sense his will spread to the objects around, and then you notice them start to float. It starts small at first. Pencils, rocks, dust, and bits of the females' hair. The lightweight objects start to list lazily up. The teenagers gasp and scream as they all rise from their seats and back away from the board. “Oh my god!” the first girl yells. “Look! They're floating!” calls the second girl. The one with black makeup wheels on the blonde boy. “Look at what you did, Blake, you fucktard!”

“It's all flying!” one of the smaller boys yells as even their chairs start to rise into the air. The objects list lazily in the air, as if gravity were just turned off. They hang in the air for a second before all of the objects start to move. They circle lazily around the board, but gather speed until it's a venerable whirlwind of bric-a-brack around the completely still Ouija Board.

“Hehehehehehehe. Hahahahahaha! HAHAHAHAHAHA!” Hector's laugh echoes in the room. One of the more sensible boys bolt through the whirlwind to the door.

“Hector, hold the door shut.” you order. You feel his willpower latch onto the door, preventing the boy from opening it. “It wont open!” he says with a panicked look on his face. The first girls screams again, “WHAT IS GOING ON!?” While the one in black continues to scream at the blonde boy, “THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!” He attempts to retain his composure. “I didn't do anything!” you feel him trying to contain his fear and his belief, looking for a rational explanation.

“WELCOME TO THE TERRORDOME!” the poltergeist yells as he manifests with one arm around Blake, and a hand grabbing the ass of the girl in black makeup. His voice echoes even above the screams of the first girl. “HOLY SHIT!” Blake cries out as the seedy ghost appears next to him, and the girl stands rigid and tense as if she were just shocked with electricity. She seems to be scared into silence as she's groped by the ghost. You actually see Hector's fingers giving her bum a few squeezes, copping a feel. You certainly didn't tell him to do that. Hector had an almost unprofessional attraction to young mortal females.

The youth look on in abject horror at Hector. “Y-You're a... You're a...” one of the boys stammered out.

“Yes, yes yes. I'm a ghost.” Hector said. “But this isn't about me. This is about you. You six have been very... very...” Hector leaned in close. His tone was a whisper, but the whisper echoed all around the room like a death rattle. “Naaaaaughty~” Hector grinned wide, revealing too many teeth for the smile to be at all benevolent.

Right before their eyes, Hector started to rot. His eyes sunk into his skull and his skin peeled and his lips cracked. His form went gaunt and maggots crawled out of his mouth. The boy at the door turned back to the nob and started frantically yanking on the knob and pounding the door. “LET ME OUT OF HEEEERE!”

You sigh with content as the belief surges back into the room, rife with the smell of fear. It was a wonderful thing.

If we have enough power, we should summon Skitter and have it turn the house into spider hell before we let Hector open the door. Don't even give them a chance to rest until they're far away.
>>
>>34521537
I think Hector's done his job at this point. We don't want him to get stale or for them to adjust to what's trying to scare them. Let's harness their flight instinct and use it to corral them into the next room, where we'll have some more fun surprises awaiting.

Can we have Skitter fill the next room with cobwebs? Like, just cover everything in them? That aught to give the mortals something to think about when they open the door.

You summon skitter to your side. He doesn't take much energy at all, being fueled by the inherent fear that resides inside of all mortals. The telltale chittering heralds the arrival of your loyal spider. He stands beside of you, coming up to your waist in his natural ectoplasmic state.

“Skitter, cover the next room in cobwebs.” you order, and the spider goes about using his allotted ectoplasm to coat every surface in thick, gooey webbing. You have Hector release the door, which swings open from the force the boy was yanking on it. All of the teenagers bolt from the room, screaming as they do. Hector continues to bellow his laugh, “HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”

The last the teenagers see of your poltergeist friend is the rotting visage of him laughing as the contents of the room whirl about him in a telekinetic storm. They slam the door shut and pause to catch their breath, believing themselves safe. “Come on.” Blake said, in another attempt to be brave. “Let's get the fuck out of here...”

The screaming girl from earlier is the first one to catch on. “Ummm, guys?” she says in a shaking voice. “Were these cobwebs here earlier?”

You give Skitter a little more ectoplasm, and he knows exactly what to do with it.

Your efforts are rewarded by another scream from the screaming girl as the first of the small spiders start to slide down from the ceiling on long strands of silk. “Spiders!” they start to yell as they see Skitter's swarm descend upon them. They frantically make for the door, only to find the handle covered in a ball of tarantulas. The screams rise up anew and you feel the rush of delicious belief and fright fueling the ectoplasm in the air. Hector and Skitter would make sure these teenagers never returned to the house of Bloody Mary. Blake attempts to swat the ball of tarantulas off of the door handle with mild success. He seems to steel his nerves and reach into what's left of the ball swarm and reach the door handle.

Sure, the spiders could have easily devoured him for such an action, but the Bureau frowned on actually harming mortals. Harming a mortal resulted in miles of red tape and paperwork and was frankly not worth the hassle. The door swung open right as Skitter manifested on the ceiling. He hissed, his fangs dripping ethereal poison in long strands. The screams and incoherent yells come anew as you feel something from the girl who screamed first. Madness. A prime resource for paranormal beings like you. It seems the girl was arachnophobic. You could feel Skitter starting to erode the mortal's psyche.

You command Skitter to fan the madness in the girl. A blonde haired girl wearing a blue shirt and jeans with shoes and a purse too expensive to be bought with anything but her parent's money. The massive spider reaches down with his front claws. Skitter scoops up the girl and brings her close to his mandibles. The spider makes wet slurping sounds with its mouth, drooling even more ethereal venom. A keen eye could have discerned that Skitter was not actually eating the girl, but the teenagers did not. They bolted out of the open door, where Blake turns around and slams the door shut.

The girl in glasses shoves Blake out of the way. “We can't just leave her!” Blake shoves the second girl back. “She's gone! She was eaten by a giant fucking spider, or did you not fucking see that!?” “She's your friend!” “I'm not dying for that skank!” “FUCK YOU, BASTARD!”

Tensions flare on the other side of the door while Skitter sets the girl down, having reduced her to a quivering and sobbing pile of fear. She curls up on the floor in the room full of spiders, having screamed herself hoarse. You watch the pitiful creature as she hugs her knees to her chest as the madness creeps into her psyche. Skitter manifests small spiders in her hair as she heaves and sobs. It's not long before you watch her realize the tiny crawling arachnids in her hair and she sits bold upright. Her screams return in earnest, though it is a painful sound to hear as she screams through a hoarse throat. She starts to tear her hair out in clumps as her friends continue to bicker on the other side of the door, her madness threatening to overtake her psyche.

Madness is the gift that keeps on giving. When we drive a mortal away in terror, they will believe and spook easier in the future. You have Skitter reach down and start to cocoon the girl in silk. Her screams only fan the flames of the bickering before Hector manifests in the other room.

“You know, in my day, it was a man's job to save a lady.” he says as he pops up in rotting corpse form behind Blake. “I never could abide a boy like you...” he says ominously. The rest of the group back away from Hector slowly. The girl in the spider room faints halfway through the cocooning, causing her screams to be cut short. “A man would have risked himself to save a dame like her.” The door flies open, revealing the girl in the giant spider's embrace. You feel Hector's telekinesis rise up as he taps into the madness to increase his telekinetic strength. Almost every spider rises up, to shoot directly to cover Blake head to toe in a blanket of spiders. The group screams again, before they bolt through the abandoned house toward the front door. Blake tries to claw the spiders off of himself as he runs, his screams are the loudest. His frantic, clumsy retreat causes him to stumble and fall multiple times. He smashes his knee on a misstep, cracks his shin over a low table, and faceplants the stairs. Blood streams from his nose as he clamors up the stairs, still trying to get the spiders off.

“Fuckin' coward.” Hector says with a huff. A tweak of the rug at the top of the stairs sends Blake careening into a wall. You hear the crack of skull on wood as the rest of the group reaches the front door.

The group tugs on the front door in a frantic attempt to escape the house. You feel Hector keep the door shut. “Hector, calm yourself.” you say. You hear him huff a bit, “All right, all right already...” he grumbles before releasing the door on the mortal's third tug. Hector's affinity for mortal women was sometimes a bit troublesome.

The front door swings open and the mortals run frantically out of the house and into the storm. The thunder drowns out their screams as an evil looking visage appears in the clouds, illuminated on the lightning. Hector's telekinesis picks up the Ouija Board in the basement, and it soars through the house. Hector launches it out the open door to smash into the back of the girl in black's head. She stumbles and looks back right as you hear a cackle on the wind.

“Hyeeeehehehehehehehe!” You had to hand it to Gail. She does great weatherwork. Now all you have to do is decide what to do with the knocked out boy or the fainted girl.

Thats... a very good question.

Well the first thing I guess we should do is start rationing our plasm again. We don't have a lot of fear nearby any more and its only a matter of time before things fade.

Presumably, the other kids will be going to the cops or something... who won't believe them, but might dispatch an officer or two. We don't really need to scare them away, but they can be useful to get the other two out of here.

Of course the bereau prefers subtlty in cleanups, so we have to make it look like nothing unusual happened at all. The cops will see nothing unusual and dismiss all the children's tales, thus cutting into their ability to feel safe in the hands of authority figures and giving them a healthy dose of paranoia.

The question then, I suppose, is how position these two to make it look like there's a perfectly logical explanation for everything.

You decide to cut back on the ectoplasm being consumed. No use in burning through all the energy you just earned. The storm lessens to a soft rain as you call Gail back inside, the wind elemental breezing right in through the open door. She disturbs dust and debris at her passing.

You decide to deal with the boy first. Moving to stand over his unconscious form. Skitter doesn't manifest, remaining on the ethereal winds until you have need of a giant spider. Hector, however, appears at your side.

“Well, boy's still breathing, at least.” Hector says.
“Barely.” Gail says, her voice like a soft whisper on the wind. She turns to Hector. “You're lucky the blow isn't fatal.”
“What? So the boy has a bit more trouble with numbers throughout his life. It's what he gets for being a coward.”

You look down at the boy as Gail and Hector bicker, deciding your next move.

“Both of you hush for a minute.” you say. The mortals were likely to call the authorities about their friends, which means more mortals would be arriving soon. “Gail, get the girl from downstairs. Take off most of her clothes, and put her in one of the beds. Hector. Grab the boy, take off everything but his underwe-”

“Boss... really?” Hector interrupts with an unsure expression. You could tell his revulsion about disrobing another man.

“Hector, that's an order. We're going to make it look like these two snuck in here for an evening of fun. Take off his clothes and put him on the floor next to the bed Gail chooses. Make it look like he rolled out of bed.”

Your two ghosts nod before moving off to set them on their tasks.

“And Hector, be gentle. If I find you've hurt him further, I'll feed you your own ectoplasmic balls.”
Hector pauses, but nods gingerly. “Of course, Boss.”

You decide to keep watch while your ghosts set to work. Not limited to the five senses of a mortal body, your consciousness extends along the ethereal winds and you see almost everything in the house. It was once a Victorian style mansion, given in to untold years of decay. You notice no signs of etheric disturbance that would suggest a bound spirit. The house is as empty as it looks.

You notice Skitter draping a cobweb over the girl's hair, a single spider hanging onto it, before roaming the house to plant more webs and spiders. You decide not to comment on the matter. Skitter is easily bored and restless.

It's not long before a police car drives up to the old mansion. Two men in uniform get out, and you can hear them talking to each other.
“...so fucking creepy, man. Of all the calls to get, why the old house on the hill?”
“Relax, Ramirez, it's probably just a prank. Some teenagers still come up here because they say this place is haunted. Rites of passage and all that. Shit, I remember people being dared to come up here at night when I was in school. This house has been here for ever...”
“I just don't like the look of it...”

You watch them withdraw their bright flashlights and walk up to the doorway before knocking on the front door.
“Hello?”
“It's the police, anyone there?”

The cops enter the open doorway. “Is anyone in here? This is the police. We got a call about a disturbance.” the taller policeman says as they shine their flashlights around. You hear Hector make a few rhythmic bumps on the wood, as if a bedpost were hitting the wall to get their attention. The cops shine their lights up toward the stairs. “Are you fucking kidding me? They snuck in here to fuck?”
“Sounds like they're doing something...”

The cops make their way up the stairs toward the sound. They knock on the door, “This is the Police. Open up.” One of them opens the door and then immediately jumps back. “Holy shit!”

His partner immediately goes for his gun, but his partner holds up a hand. “Ho... sorry.”
“The fuck was that about, man?”
“Damn spider just hanging like right at my face...”

The two cops shine their light into the room, noticing the unconscious teenagers. “....Fucker rolled right out of bed. Probably drunk... Damn kids.” the shorter one shines his light on the girl's face. “Police. Get up.” The girl opens her eyes, and starts to scream.

Hours later, six more cop cars are swarming outside, along with an ambulance. The girl had to be restrained and drugged before she stopped screaming about spiders. The boy was being carted to the hospital to be treated for his injuries. You overhear the police talking,

“...Kept screaming about spiders. And the other kid's still out. Probably on drugs.”
“Well, you'd have to be on drugs to fuck in a creepy place like this. Fucking kids today...”

You turn around, dismissing your ghosts back to the Haunted Mannor, congratulating them on a job well done. You are about to leave yourself when you see a face in the mirror.
“Mary.” you say in greeting. “I was actually just finishing up.”

The face in the mirror gives a smile. “Thank you, Spectre. I would have done it myself, but you know I can't manifest unless I'm invoked by a mortal.”

“I understand, Mary. It's no problem. The crew was getting restless and they had fun with the chance to stretch out. Always a pleasure to gather plasm, you know.” you answer the face in the mirror. Mary had the ability to appear in any mirror, but could only manifest to mortals if they invoked her. Still, she was a high profile ghost in the Bureau. Having her owe you a favor could only further your position. “Just don't forget us if we need you in the future.”

Mary shakes her head, still smiling. “Of course not, Spectre. I will put in a good work with the Bureau. And of course if you ever need my help, just ask. Be sure to report back before long. It seems they already have another mission for you. Something about a rogue haunting not authorized by anyone in the Bureau.”

You nod. “Thank you, Mary. I will be returning soon.”

You do have a home base. The first choice for the next thread is go to the next mission or go rest up at the Haunted Mannor, your home base.

Our current Ghostmaster has been at his job for a good while, or at least to get a couple good hauntings under his belt. But yes, currently he only has three ghosts that are permanently assigned to him. The others have been loaners. Guess he just hasn't had the chance to free many bound spirits to join him. Hopefully we can change that.
